Abstract:Background:The role of hospital pharmacists has shifted from primarily ensuring drug supply to providing comprehensive pharmaceutical care. To accommodate this shift, new positions are needed. The traditional training model for hospital pharmacists is no longer sufficient for the evolving demands of pharmaceutical care and these new roles. This study aimed to describe the development of a position-oriented learning system explicitly tailored for hospital pharmacists and to assess its impact on workforce development and pharmacy service. Methods:The position-oriented learning system for hospital pharmacists, aimed at enhancing training and workforce development, was evaluated based on two critical criteria: the completion rate of learning modules and the subsequent improvement in pharmaceutical care at the hospital. The completion rate assessed the engagement and effectiveness of the training content. At the same time, the improvement in pharmaceutical care evaluated practical outcomes such as percentages of patients who received pharmaceutical care and percentages of inappropriate medication orders intercepted. Results:In 2021, 218 employees participated in the learning system. The pharmacy department has identified 22 pharmacists for various positions through this system. The quantity and quality of pharmaceutical care have improved significantly. Conclusion:The position-oriented diversified learning system achieves the perfect combination of department development direction and individual career planning of employees. The learning system can significantly improve the learning efficiency of pharmacists, enhance the quality of various pharmaceutical care, and promote the development of disciplines.
Documenting workload to better integrate clinical and distributive services

Abstract:Use of workload and work-flow documentation in two pharmacy satellites to evaluate pharmacists' productivity is described. Workload was evaluated during 14 consecutive days in May 1983 and 7 consecutive days in May 1984. All pharmacists and technicians working in the satellites recorded times for their activities on a form that listed every possible activity; interruptions such as answering the telephone, responding to walking requests, replacing stock, and lunches and break times were also recorded. Concurrently, the clinical coordinator observed and evaluated work performed for four-hour time blocks at least once each day. Analysis of workload and work-flow information identified problems with scheduling, priorities, interruptions, and pharmacists' knowledge of clinical pharmacy practice. Based on these observations, the following changes were implemented: pharmacists were scheduled to work either inside or outside the satellites for two-week or one-month time periods, priorities were assigned to certain tasks performed inside or outside the satellites, job assignments were made based on the pharmacist's capabilities and the needs of the patient-care areas, a form for documenting potential problem orders was created, and pharmacists were evaluated monthly and given one-on-one instruction by the clinical coordinator. Documentation of time use identified problems and led to changes in assignments that better integrated clinical, educational, and distributive responsibilities for the purpose of providing more efficient and effective services.
Estimating the Relationship Between Nurse Staffing and Medication Pass Workload Using National Barcode Data

Abstract:Background: Measuring and assessing the relationship between inpatient nurse staffing and workload across a national health system is difficult due to challenges in systematically observing inpatient workload at the unit level. Objective: The objective of this study was to apply a novel measure of inpatient nurse workload to estimate the relationship between inpatient nurse staffing and nurse workload at the unit level during a key nursing activity: the peak-time medication pass. Methods: A retrospective observational study was conducted in the Veterans Health Administration, the largest employer of nurses in the U.S. The sample included all patients (n= 1,578,399 patient days) admitted to 311 non-intensive care unit inpatient acute care units in 112 hospitals in 2019 (104,588 unit days). Staffing was measured as the unit-level, nurse-to-patient ratio, and workload was measured using average time (duration) for RNs to complete the peak-time medication pass. Results: We found a negative relationship between the RN-to-patient ratio and average peak time medication pass duration after adjusting for unit-level patient volume and average patient severity of illness and other unit-level factors. This relationship was non-linear: the marginal effect of staffing on workload decreased as staffing increased. Discussion: As unit-level nurse staffing increased, average RN workload decreased. This result suggests that interventions to improve nurse staffing may have larger non-linear effects for units with lower staffing levels. Understanding the effect of differing staffing decisions on variations in nursing workload is critical for adopting models of care that effectively use scarce staffing resources and contribute to retaining nurses in the inpatient workforce. This work provides evidence that peak time medication pass duration is a valid process-based measure of workload and highlights the potential diminishing returns to increasing staffing.
Comprehensive workflow evaluation to improve medication distribution to the emergency department in an academic medical center

Purpose The fast-paced environment of the emergency department (ED), with frequent admissions, discharges, and transfers, poses a challenge for pharmacy departments to effectively distribute and store medications. The purpose of this study is to propose a unique workflow of patient-specific medication delivery to the ED from a hospital pharmacy to reduce the number of missing medications resulting in medication messages and redispenses. Methods The medication delivery workflow proposed in this study consists of batching the preparation and distribution of patient-specific medications sent from the pharmacy to the ED in the 1 to 2 hours prior to their administration time. Chi-square analysis was completed to compare medication redispenses and “missing medication” messages before and after the intervention, with the significance level set at P < 0.05. Results The percentage of redispensed medications was effectively decreased following implementation of the workflow change from 21.6% to 9.2% (P < 0.001), with unit doses having the greatest reduction (25.8% vs 6.1%, P < 0.001). Benefits of this workflow change were also illustrated through a reduction in the percentage of missing-medication messages sent by nursing staff from 97.7% to 93.9% (P < 0.001). Conclusion This study showed that implementation of standard, hourly batches of medications dispensed from the pharmacy to the ED resulted in a significant reduction in the total percentage of redispensed medications and missing-medication messages. The overall reduction in redispensed medications as a result of this innovative workflow change not only benefited nursing and pharmacy staff but can reduce medication waste and improve patient care through timely administration of medications.

Abstract:Most RNA molecules that are endowed with catalytic activity function in the form of ribonucleoproteins within cells. These complexes are frequently large, poorly defined, and difficult to study. As a model system to study biological catalysis by ribonucleoproteins, we have modified the hairpin ribozyme by inserting an RNA structure that serves as a binding site for bacteriophage R17 coat protein in the form of an extension to ribozyme helix 4, which lies at the periphery of the catalytic domain. In the absence of protein, we find that incorporation of the protein-binding domain increases the catalytic efficiency of the hairpin ribozyme by 2-fold for the cleavage reaction and 16-fold for the ligation reaction. This increase in activity correlates with an increase in the proportion of molecules which fold into the active tertiary structure, as measured by a UV cross-linking assay. Mobility-shift and filter-binding assays of complex formation show that R17 coat protein binds to the chimeric ribozyme with a dissociation constant essentially identical to that of the isolated protein-binding domain; no binding of the protein to the unmodified ribozyme could be detected. The kinetics of cleavage and ligation reactions are not altered by the presence of saturating concentrations of coat protein, and competition studies demonstrate that the protein remains bound to the ribozyme throughout the catalytic cycle. These studies establish that the hairpin ribozyme can be engineered to function efficiently in the form of a ribonucleoprotein in vitro and will serve as the basis for future experimentation to understand mechanisms of protein modulation of catalytic RNA activity, and to introduce other protein-binding domains, for example, HIV-1 rev-binding and tar elements, which may be useful for influencing subcellular localization, regulating intracellular activity, or generating ribozymes that also function as "decoys" in antiviral applications.

Modeling emergency department nursing workload in real time: An exploratory study

Abstract:<p>Study of emergency department (ED) nursing workload has been largely subsumed under the related but separate phenomenon of ED crowding. Nursing workload is difficult to quantify directly. This observational study explored modeling ED nursing workload indirectly, in real time, from quantitative data available from the patient tracking computer system (PTCS).</p><h3 class="u-h4 u-margin-m-top u-margin-xs-bottom">Methods</h3><p>Data on 2793 patient visits plus departmental statistics were collected during 167 60-minute survey periods (SP) in a 25-bed hospital ED in the United States. The charge nurse assessed a perceived workload score (WLS) according to pre-determined criteria following each SP as a validation measure.</p><h3 class="u-h4 u-margin-m-top u-margin-xs-bottom">Data analysis</h3><p>Correlations were calculated between the data and WLS, and strongly correlating variables were incorporated into linear regression models that sought to approximate WLS.</p><h3 class="u-h4 u-margin-m-top u-margin-xs-bottom">Results</h3><p>A measure of aggregate patient acuity derived from the Emergency Severity Index (ESI) was the strongest predictor of WLS (r = 0.7991). The best-performing model agreed with WLS in 64% of SPs.</p><h3 class="u-h4 u-margin-m-top u-margin-xs-bottom">Conclusions</h3><p>Good agreement between model output and WLS suggests that ED nursing workload can be estimated indirectly in real time using data from a PTCS. Strong correlation between the ESI derivative and WLS further validates ESI and suggests a new application for the ESI score.</p>

Purpose: To evaluate the impact of an enterprise controlled substance (ECS) management system with integration of analytics software on labor requirements and inventory cost within a health-system pharmacy. Methods: A prospective, pre-post observational study was designed to assess the impact of implementing a solution that connects disparate systems with the integration of analytics software. Three study modules were implemented over approximately 18 months. The intervention consisted of implementation of new CS vaults, a centralized server, an automated central medication inventory system, and inventory optimization analytics software. The number of transactions and time spent on CS reports were compared before and after implementation to determine labor and inventory efficiencies. Results: Both of the study facilities had a decrease in CS daily stockouts and an increase in inventory turns compared to baseline, while the total number of transactions (vends) at the central vault and decentralized dispensing cabinets increased. The addition of analytics allowed for establishment of informed changes to periodic automated replenishment levels. Additionally, both facilities saw a reduction in the number of expired medications, and there was subsequently a reduction in the total reverse distributor costs. Finally, both facilities had a reduction in the amount of time spent on manual tasks associated with reconciling and managing discrepancies. Conclusion: An inventory management system integrated with an advanced analytics tool provided a reduction in the time spent on receiving, storing, and reconciling CS records while the number of transactions increased. The ECS solution enhanced the visibility of the chain of custody while closing the loop between reporting and receiving inventory, eliminating or reducing the frequency of manual processes.
Analysis of workload and staffing requirements for a critical-care satellite pharmacy

Abstract:A study to determine the workload and the staffing requirements of a proposed critical-care satellite pharmacy is reported. Data for all patients admitted to the adult surgical intensive-care units (SICUs) of an acute-care teaching hospital were recorded for 30 days. Both clinical and distributive data were collected, such as the number and times of patient admissions to the SICUs, the times medication orders were written and their nature, the number and types of drugs administered per patient per day, the number of medication profile reviews per day, and the number and types of interventions. Productivity standards were determined for specific clinical and distributive tasks and used to project the staffing requirements of the new satellite pharmacy. It was determined that proposed changes in distributive services, including expansion of the i.v. admixture program and implementation of a syringe-pump infusion system, would increase the pharmacist and technician staffing requirements by 1.91 and 6.77 hours per day, respectively. Expansion of clinical services, such as pharmacokinetic monitoring, would increase the pharmacist staffing requirements by 8.68 hours per day. It was estimated that the SICU satellite pharmacy could save the hospital more than $200,000 per year. Hospital administration approved a request to increase staffing by 3 full-time-equivalent (FTE) pharmacists and 1.6 FTE technicians. Workload analyses and projections of staffing requirements must incorporate measurements for clinical as well as distributive services.

Abstract:Abstract Objectives To determine the effect of installing an original-pack automated dispensing system (ADS) on dispensary workload and prevented dispensing incidents in a hospital pharmacy. Methods Data on dispensary workload and prevented dispensing incidents, defined as dispensing errors detected and reported before medication had left the pharmacy, were collected over 6 weeks at a National Health Service hospital in Wales before and after the installation of an ADS. Workload was measured by non-participant observation using the event recording technique. Prevented dispensing incidents were self-reported by pharmacy staff on standardised forms. Median workloads (measured as items dispensed/person/hour) were compared using Mann–Whitney U tests and rate of prevented dispensing incidents were compared using Chi-square test. Spearman's rank correlation was used to examine the association between workload and prevented dispensing incidents. A P value of ≤0.05 was considered statistically significant. Key findings Median dispensary workload was significantly lower pre-automation (9.20 items/person/h) compared to post-automation (13.17 items/person/h, P < 0.001). Rate of prevented dispensing incidents was significantly lower post-automation (0.28%) than pre-automation (0.64%, P < 0.0001) but there was no difference (P = 0.277) between the types of dispensing incidents. A positive association existed between workload and prevented dispensing incidents both pre- (ρ = 0.13, P = 0.015) and post-automation (ρ = 0.23, P < 0.001). Dispensing incidents were found to occur during prolonged periods of moderate workload or after a busy period. Conclusion Study findings suggest that automation improves dispensing efficiency and reduces the rate of prevented dispensing incidents. It is proposed that prevented dispensing incidents frequently occurred during periods of high workload due to involuntary automaticity. Prevented dispensing incidents occurring after a busy period were attributed to staff experiencing fatigue after-effects.

Abstract:Introduction In order to be positioned to address the increasing strain of burnout and worsening nurse shortage, a better understanding of factors that contribute to nursing workload is required. This study aims to examine the difference between order‐based and clinically perceived nursing workloads and to quantify factors that contribute to a higher clinically perceived workload. Design A retrospective cohort study was used on an observational dataset. Methods We combined patient flow, nurse staffing and assignment, and workload intensity data and used multivariate linear regression to analyze how various shift, patient, and nurse‐level factors, beyond order‐based workload, affect nurses' clinically perceived workload. Results Among 53% of our samples, the clinically perceived workload is higher than the order‐based workload. Factors associated with a higher clinically perceived workload include weekend or night shifts, shifts with a higher census, patients within the first 24 h of admission, and male patients. Conclusions The order‐based workload measures tended to underestimate nurses' clinically perceived workload. We identified and quantified factors that contribute to a higher clinically perceived workload, discussed the potential mechanisms as to how these factors affect the clinically perceived workload, and proposed targeted interventions to better manage nursing workload. Clinical Relevance By identifying factors associated with a high clinically perceived workload, the nurse manager can provide appropriate interventions to lighten nursing workload, which may further reduce the risk of nurse burnout and shortage.

PharmaTrend as a management tool: implementation in a university hospital

Abstract:The implementation of ASHP's hospital pharmacy management information system, PharmaTrend, in a university hospital is described. The pharmacy department at the University of Wisconsin Hospital and Clinics (UWHC) is a decentralized operation with 63.5 pharmacist full-time equivalents (FTEs) and 81.6 supportive staff FTEs. The multipharmacy capability of PharmaTrend, which allows workload and productivity data for several pharmacies (usually satellites) to be combined into total departmental data for a given period, was used by UWHC to describe the pharmacy department's major cost centers individually. These centers were inpatient services, outpatient services, home health i.v. services, and two offsite pharmacies. Data were divided into elements collected by computer, elements not previously collected or requiring new procedures, and elements requiring manual collection. Data entry forms specific to each cost center were developed. With these forms, collected data can be categorized appropriately by technical staff members. Work hour allocation for each cost center was determined on the basis of PharmaTrend definitions and institution-specific considerations; only those hours reflecting direct fiscal burden of the department on the hospital were included. A manual process for collecting and categorizing data on hours worked and hours paid was automated and adapted for use in PharmaTrend. Finally, some preliminary experience with the system was obtained so that information could be collected for the development of policies, procedures, and training methods and on the use of forms and categorization methods. In particular, the time requirements for collecting, categorizing, and entering selected PharmaTrend data by cost center were determined. Optimal use of PharmaTrend requires creativity and a commitment of time and effort.
Impact of connected dispensing technology with advanced analytics in a multicenter health system

Purpose: This study was designed to evaluate the impact of enterprise inventory optimization (EIO) technology and analytics on pharmacy labor, costs, and medication availability within a large integrated delivery network (IDN). Methods: This article describes a mixed-methods, postmarket observational study assessing the impact of a solution of disparate technologies including automated dispensing cabinets (ADCs), centralized pharmacy inventory software, and controlled substance vaults connected by an inventory optimization analytics (IOA) tool. Four study modules were implemented over a 10-month period. The intervention consisted of implementation of the IOA software, linking the disparate automated technologies. Transactional data was collected and aggregated with user perception survey data in both the pre- and postintervention periods. Descriptive and comparative statistical testing was used to assess outcomes. Results: A total of 11 facilities with bed counts ranging between 22 and 908 beds were included in this study. At an enterprise level, users were able to complete an average of 2.8 times more periodic automated replenishment (PAR) level changes post intervention, resulting in an estimated enterprise labor avoidance of over 1 full-time equivalent (2,099 labor hours) annually. Despite an enterprise decision to increase ADC inventory on hand from a 3-day supply to a 5-day supply, 5 sites (45%) had a decrease in total inventory, while 9 sites (82%) saw a decrease in ADC inventory costs. Additionally, 7 sites (64%) saw a reduction in the ADC stockout percentage and all 11 sites (100%) saw a decrease in the central pharmacy stockout percentage post intervention. Conclusion: Integration and optimization of connected inventory management technology was observed to have positive impacts on improving labor productivity, reducing ADC inventory carrying costs, and increasing medication availability.
Use of multiple methods to measure impact of a centralized call center on academic health system community pharmacies

Abstract:Purpose: The process and methods used in an impact assessment of a centralized pharmacy call center on community pharmacy employee patient safety climate perceptions, telephone distractions/interruptions, and prescription filling efficiency are described. Summary: A broad-based team designed a multi-faceted, pre-post call center implementation analysis that included multiple change assessment measures. First, yearly administration of the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality Community Pharmacy Survey on Patient Safety Culture was used to assess patient safety climate based on employee perceptions of a safe working environment and potential for errors due to interruptions and distractions. Evaluative measures of staff workload that assessed telephone interference with prescription filling activities pre and 3 months post implementation included (1) the NASA Task Load Index, (2) multi-tasking observations through shadowing of pharmacists and technicians to count number of interruptions/distractions per prescription "touched," and (3) self-reported work sampling to assess proportional time estimates of clinical, professional, and technical activities. Finally, pharmacy efficiency and prescription filling capacity were assessed using operational measures (prescriptions filled, patients served, phone call volume changes, prescription rework counting). Data analysis included summary statistics, Student's t-test, and chi-square analysis, as appropriate, in addition to assessing convergence and agreement among measures. Every evaluative method showed a positive outcome from call center implementation, although individual pharmacies may have accrued greater benefit from call reduction than others. Conclusion: Multiple analysis methods can be used to evaluate the impact of workflow changes.
Assessing patient work system factors for medication management during transition of care among older adults: an observational study

Abstract:Objective: To develop and evaluate measures of patient work system factors in medication management that may be modifiable for improvement during the care transition from hospital to home among older adults. Design, settings and participants: Measures were developed and evaluated in a multisite prospective observational study of older adults (≥65 years) discharged home from medical units of two US hospitals from August 2018 to July 2019. Main measures: Patient work system factors for managing medications were assessed during hospital stays using six capacity indicators, four task indicators and three medication management practice indicators. Main outcomes were assessed at participants' homes approximately a week after discharge for (1) Medication discrepancies between the medications taken at home and those listed in the medical record, and (2) Patient experiences with new medication regimens. Results: 274 of the 376 recruited participants completed home assessment (72.8%). Among capacity indicators, most older adults (80.6%) managed medications during transition without a caregiver, 41.2% expressed low self-efficacy in managing medications and 18.3% were not able to complete basic medication administration tasks. Among task indicators, more than half (57.7%) had more than 10 discharge medications and most (94.7%) had medication regimen changes. Having more than 10 discharge medications, more than two medication regimen changes and low self-efficacy in medication management increased the risk of feeling overwhelmed (OR 2.63, 95% CI 1.08 to 6.38, OR 3.16, 95% CI 1.29 to 7.74 and OR 2.56, 95% CI 1.25 to 5.26, respectively). Low transportation independence, not having a home caregiver, low medication administration skills and more than 10 discharge medications increased the risk of medication discrepancies (incidence rate ratio 1.39, 95% CI 1.01 to 1.91, incidence rate ratio 1.73, 95% CI 1.13 to 2.66, incidence rate ratio 1.99, 95% CI 1.37 to 2.89 and incidence rate ratio 1.91, 95% CI 1.24 to 2.93, respectively). Conclusions: Patient work system factors could be assessed before discharge with indicators for increased risk of poor patient experience and medication discrepancies during older adults' care transition from hospital to home.
Modeling Advanced Practice Provider Productivity in the Emergency Department

Abstract:Objectives: In this study, we examine APP productivity to determine if a similar pattern applies to that of residents and attendings, with the hypothesis that hourly productivity decreases after the first few hours of the shift.Background: APP productivity follows a similar pattern to previously described behaviors in both residents and attendings. This further confirms the results of prior studies that productivity is a dynamic process that needs to be considered when adjusting staffing models. Additionally, this pattern by APPs at a community hospital provides additional validation of this model outside of academic institutions or training environments.Methods: This is a retrospective cohort study from 7/1/21 through 6/30/21 at a single suburban community hospital in the northeast. APPs work ten hour shifts from 10AM to 8PM, nearly every day. APPs also provide coverage for approximately 5 shifts per month from 3PM to 11PM. Timestamps of initial patient contact are automatically logged by the electronic health record, and then analyzed to determine in which hour of the shift this occurred. A mixed linear model was performed with the hour as a categorical variable, and day of the week, month and year as covariates. Data was grouped by individual shifts.Results: A total of 345 10-hour shifts were worked by five APPs over the one year studied. There were 64 additional afternoon shifts which were excluded due to the shorter length and lower frequency. Two APPs worked the vast majority of the shifts, and the other three provided per-diem coverage. A mean of 13.3 patients (SD 2.7) were seen per shift. In the first hour, APPs saw an average of 2.67 patients (95% CI 2.59-2.76). Each hour demonstrated a statistically significant decrease relative to the first hour (p< 0.001), with the highest magnitude over the second (-0.58 (95% CI -0.69 — -0.47)) and third (-0.98 (95% CI -1.09 — -0.86)) hours. This downward trend continued throughout the rest of the shift; however, the magnitude of this difference after the sixth hour was not significant. There was no effect by day of week, month or year.Conclusion: APP productivity follows a similar pattern to previously described behaviors in both residents and attendings. The Optimizing Care Model: Final findings of a novel community pharmacy practice model to enhance patient care delivery using technician product verification

Abstract:Background: The community pharmacy represents a convenient health care access point for patients and is increasingly used to deliver direct patient care services; however, several barriers exist that hinder widespread patient service implementation and scalability. Such barriers include scope of practice restrictions, a dearth of sustainable payment models, lack of pharmacist capacity given other responsibilities, and workflow models developed for dispensing medications rather than clinical care. In an effort to overcome the lack of pharmacist time and capacity, further task delegation to pharmacy technicians has been suggested. Objectives: The primary objective of this study was to present the final outcomes of the Optimizing Care Model's impact. The model's impact on pharmacist patient care, workday composition, and rates of product selection errors not identified during final product verification are reported. Methods: The Optimizing Care Model is an innovative approach to community pharmacy practice aiming to foster a new patient-centered care delivery model that expands clinical service delivery and fosters collaboration across health care settings through task delegation, primarily through technician product verification (TPV). To investigate the impact of its sustained implementation, a quasi-experimental, 1-group pretest-posttest design was used. Outcomes assessed included medication errors, clinical activities, and workday composition. Results: Six chain and 3 independent pharmacies completed the final, continuation phase of the study. Overall pharmacist time spent delivering patient care services increased significantly upon implementation of the Optimizing Care Model (21% vs. 43%; P < 0.05), whereas pharmacist time spent performing dispensing-related activities decreased significantly (67% vs. 37%; P < 0.05). Total undetected error rates were significantly less in the Optimizing Care Model phase compared with the traditional model (0.05% vs. 0.01%; P < 0.001). Conclusion: This study presented the final results of a 2-year assessment of the Optimizing Care Model. Results reaffirmed initial published findings that the model and its use of TPV increase the array and frequency of direct patient care services rendered while resulting in lower undetected error rates. Final project results of the Optimizing Care Model demonstrate increased clinical service delivery versus the traditional model, while also improving patient safety with lower rates of undetected dispensing errors within the Optimizing Care Model. The Optimizing Care Model continues to show promise as a future practice model for community pharmacies.

Abstract:Background Emergency departments (ED) nurses experience high mental workloads because of unpredictable work environments; however, research evaluating ED nursing workload using a tool incorporating nurses' perception is lacking. Quantify ED nursing subjective workload and explore the impact of work experience on perceived workload. Methods Thirty-two ED nurses at a tertiary academic hospital in the Republic of Korea were surveyed to assess their subjective workload for ED procedures using the National Aeronautics and Space Administration Task Load Index (NASA-TLX). Nonparametric statistical analysis was performed to describe the data, and linear regression analysis was conducted to estimate the impact of work experience on perceived workload. Results Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) had the highest median workload, followed by interruption from a patient and their family members. Although inexperienced nurses perceived the 'special care' procedures (CPR and defibrillation) as more challenging compared with other categories, analysis revealed that nurses with more than 107 months of experience reported a significantly higher workload than those with less than 36 months of experience. Conclusion Addressing interruptions and customizing training can alleviate ED nursing workload. Quantified perceived workload is useful for identifying acceptable thresholds to maintain optimal workload, which ultimately contributes to predicting nursing staffing needs and ED crowding.
