Abstract:The desire to increase profit on dairy farms necessitates consideration of the revenue attainable from the sale of surplus calves for meat production. However, the generation of calves that are expected to excel in efficiency of growth and carcass merit must not be achieved to the detriment of the dairy female and her ability to calve and re-establish pregnancy early postcalving without any compromise in milk production. Given the relatively high heritability of many traits associated with calving performance and carcass merit, and the tendency for many of these traits to be moderately to strongly antagonistic, a breeding index that encompasses both calving performance and meat production could be a useful tool to fill the void in supporting decisions on bull selection. The objective of the present study was to derive a dairy-beef index (DBI) framework to rank beef bulls for use on dairy females with the aim of striking a balance between the efficiency of valuable meat growth in the calf and the subsequent performance of the dam. Traits considered for inclusion in this DBI were (1) direct calving difficulty; (2) direct gestation length; (3) calf mortality; (4) feed intake; (5) carcass merit reflected by carcass weight, conformation, and fat and the ability to achieve minimum standards for each; (6) docility; and (7) whether the calf was polled. Each trait was weighted by its respective economic weight, most of which were derived from the analyses of available phenotypic data, supplemented with some assumptions on costs and prices. The genetic merit for a range of performance metrics of 3,835 artificial insemination beef bulls from 14 breeds ranked on this proposed DBI was compared with an index comprising only direct calving difficulty and gestation length (the 2 generally most important characteristics of dairy farmers when selecting beef bulls). Within the Angus breed (i.e., the beef breed most commonly used on dairy females), the correlation between the DBI and the index of genetic merit for direct calving difficulty plus gestation length was 0.74; the mean of the within-breed correlations across all other breeds was 0.87. The ranking of breeds changed considerably when ranked based on the top 20 artificial insemination bulls excelling in the DBI versus excelling in the index of calving difficulty and gestation length. Dairy breeds ranked highest on the index of calving difficulty and gestation length, whereas the Holstein and Friesian breeds were intermediate on the DBI; the Jersey breed was one of the poorest breeds on DBI, superior only to the Charolais breed. The results clearly demonstrate that superior carcass and growth performance can be achieved with the appropriate selection of beef bulls for use on dairy females with only a very modest increase in collateral effect on cow performance (i.e., 2-3% greater dystocia expected and a 6-d-longer gestation length).
How does a beef × dairy calving affect the dairy cow's following lactation?

Abstract:For beef semen usage on dairy cows, much of the research has focused on the performance of the crossbred calves, yet little focus has been given to the subsequent performance of the cow herself. This study aimed to evaluate the performance of dairy cows for milk yield, fertility, and survival traits after giving birth to beef × dairy crossbred calves and compare this with the performance after giving birth to purebred dairy calves. Further, we aimed to study if the effect of a difficult calving was the same regardless of whether the calf was purebred dairy or beef × dairy crossbred. Phenotypic records from 587,288 calving events from 1997 to 2020 were collected from the Swedish milk recording system from cows of the dairy breeds Swedish Red (SR) and Swedish Holstein. The sire beef breeds studied were Aberdeen Angus, Hereford (combined in category LHT), Charolais, Limousin, and Simmental (category HVY). Sixteen traits were defined and grouped in 3 categories: cumulative and 305-d milk, fat, and protein yield, daily milk yield, and 75-d milk yield as yield traits; calving to first insemination interval, calving to last insemination interval, first to last insemination interval, calving interval, and number of inseminations as fertility traits; and survival to 75 d or to next calving and lactation length as measures of survival. The data were analyzed for all traits for first and second parities separately using mixed linear models, with a focus on the estimates of cow breed by service sire breed combinations. All traits in parity 2 were adjusted for previous 305-d milk yield based on the expectation that low-yielding cows would more likely to be inseminated with beef semen. Overall, milk yield was lower after beef × dairy calvings compared with the purebred dairy calvings. The largest effects were found on cumulative yields and in second parity, with lower effects for yields early in lactation and yields in first parity. The largest decrease was 13 to 14 kg (0.12 phenotypic SD) for cumulative fat yield when breeding beef breed sires with purebred SR dams. For fertility traits, for most breed combinations, the effects were not large enough to be significant. Conversely, all beef × dairy crossbred combinations showed significantly lower results for survival to the next lactation, and mostly also for lactation length. There was some indication that dairy cows with beef × dairy calvings in parity 2 that were the result of maximum 2 inseminations in parity 1, had lower survival than corresponding calvings resulting from more than 2 inseminations. This could indicate that the former cows were marked for culling already when inseminated. There was generally an unfavorable effect of a difficult calving on all traits, however, there were almost no significant interactions between calving performance and dam by sire breed combination, and these interactions were never significant in first parity.
Economic impact of different strategies to use sex-sorted sperm for reproductive management in seasonal-calving, pasture-based dairy herds

Abstract:To maximize efficiency, profitability, and societal acceptance of modern dairy production, it is important to minimize the production of male dairy calves with poor beef merit. One solution involves using sex-sorted sperm (SS) to generate dairy replacements and breeding all other cows to an easy-calving, short-gestation bull with good beef merit. We used the Pasture Based Herd Dynamic Milk Model to investigate the effect of herd fertility and use of SS on farm net profit in a herd of 100 cows. This was completed by simulating herds with differing fertility performance (good, average, poor), and differing farm reproductive management [conventional semen (CONV) or SS with varying pregnancy per artificial insemination (P/AI) relative to CONV (i.e., relative P/AI 100%, 85%, and 70%)]. As an additional consideration, the method of allocating SS to cows was also examined. The first option used SS on random heifers and cows (S). The second option used SS on heifers and targeted high-fertility cows (SSel). The final option was similar to SSel, but used a fixed-time artificial insemination (AI) protocol to facilitate AI on the farm mating start date (SSync). For CONV, dairy breed semen was used for AI until 50 animals were pregnant (50% chance of a female calf), whereas for S, SSel, or SSync the target number of animals successfully conceiving with SS was set at 28 (based on assumed 90% chance of a female calf from pregnancies derived from SS). Beef breed semen was used on all other dams. The results indicated that the biggest effect on farm net profit was not based on whether or not SS was used, but instead was most affected by the overall fertility performance of the herd. Total farm profit decreased by 10% between the good and average fertility herds, and decreased by a further 12% between the average and poor fertility herds. In almost all situations, when the relative P/AI with SS was ≥85%, use of SS led to an overall increase of the farm net profit. There was an economic benefit of using either SSel or SSync compared with S for the average and poor fertility herds but not for the good fertility herd, highlighting an interaction between SS P/AI and overall herd fertility as well as management practices. If the relative P/AI with SS was <70%, the use of SS led to a decrease in profitability in all simulations except for SSync, highlighting the importance of a good management strategy for use of SS. The findings in this study indicated that SS has significant potential to help facilitate greater integration between the dairy and beef production sectors, as well as increase farm profitability when used appropriately.
EFFECTS OF BEEF SEMEN AND BEEF EMBRYO STRATEGIES ON PROFITABILITY: Economics of using beef semen and beef in vitro produced embryo transfer in Jersey herds

Abstract:Dairy herds have adopted sexed semen (SS) and beef semen (BS) to control heifer inventory and increase calf sales revenue. Beef in vitro-produced embryo transfer (beef IVP-ET) may be an alternative to increase calf sales revenue. Besides, raising those Jersey beef crossbred and/or pure beef animals in a dairy system may be a new source of revenue. We aimed to evaluate breed strategies combining dairy conventional semen (CS), SS, BS, and beef IVP-ET on herd dynamics and profitability by marketing those animals with one-day-old or raising them to 180 kg. A Markov chain model was developed to maximize the profitability of Jersey herds by changing the number of dairy heifers sold at birth and the culling rate of 3rd and greater parity cows. The model presents inputs on the reproductive and productive performance of heifers and cows over time. The last year's data (year 10 - steady state) was used to calculate accrual operational cost and revenue per cow per year. We varied the breeding strategy by breeding order and parities, the embryo transfer cost ($85 or $170), the pure beef calf market price ($200 or $300), and by marketing Jersey-beef and pure beef animals with one-day-old or raising them to 180 kg. A total of 8 scenarios + default scenario were simulated. Overall, the proportion of SS use was 47.3 ± 0.6%. For the scenarios replacing all CS breedings with BS breedings, the proportion of CS and BS used was 52.3 ± 0.6. When beef IVP-ET was used, the percentage of BS and beef IVP-ET used was 22.4 ± 0.1% and 31.0 ± 0.1%, respectively. We observed that when we compared SS:BS with the default scenario, the production of purebred Jersey male calves was reduced by 83.5%, and profit/cow per year was increased from $113.5 to $203.3 with SS:BS. When a beef IVP-ET of $85 per transfer was used (scenarios 2 and 3), profit/cow per year was $145.5 and $176.2 for a pure-beef calf price of $200 and $300, respectively. In scenario 4, with a beef IVP-ET cost of $170, the lowest profit ($52.9 per cow per year) was found when marketing one-day-old pure-beef calves at $200. The highest profit was achieved for scenario raising the Jersey-beef crossbred animals to 180 kg ($232.9, scenario 6), followed by scenario 7 ($222.9, SS:BS:IVP-ET) with an embryo transfer cost of $85. Under the current market conditions, combining SS and BS in the reproductive program was a feasible economic opportunity for Jersey herds, yielding the highest net return. The adoption of beef IVP-ET in a reproductive program can potentially increase profit/cow per year, but its profitability will depend on the beef IVP-ET pregnancy cost, the pure-beef market price, calf performance, and the herd reproductive performance. In conclusion, raising the Jersey-beef crossbred calves may be a profitable strategy, and dairy producers need to evaluate the best option to invest in since it will take an extra risk to produce high-quality animals to the market.
Beef production from cull dairy cows: a review from culling to consumption

Abstract:Although more than 3 million head of dairy cows enter the food supply chain in the U.S. every year, research on this topic remains limited and scarce. Meat production from dairy cows is a significant component of beef production, accounting for almost 10% of U.S. commercial beef production. Thus, the purpose of this review is to demonstrate the importance of dairy cows as a beef source, and to provide an overview on topics from farm to meat product-culling, marketing, transportation, welfare, body composition and its relationship with lactation particularities, carcass characteristics, meat quality, and traceability. Current scientific evidence has shown that culling a dairy cow at an appropriate time has beneficial effects on cow welfare and, consequently, cow value. During marketing the dairy cow is visually evaluated for health and factors associated with its expected carcass value; thus, marketing a well-conditioned cow will ensure that the animal is fit for transportation and provides high carcass yield. However, limitations such as low body condition score, lameness or mobility problems, and visual defects remain persistent. Even though beef harvest plants accommodate cows in all body composition states, the current carcass grade system does not reflect the mature cow industry needs. Therefore, improvement of the grading system could maximize carcass utilization and increase cow carcass value by recognizing subprimal cuts that could be merchandised as whole muscle cuts. Lastly, implementation of a traceability system would unify information from the farm to harvest assisting the industry in making further advancements.

Abstract:Close-out information, consisting of data from 1836 pens of cattle that were placed on feed between January 1988 and December 1997, which had been submitted by Iowa cattle producers using the Iowa State University Feedlot Performance and Cost Monitoring program, was examined to determine factors affecting beef cattle performance and profitability. Information provided on close-out sheets included start and end date, cattle per pen, sex, housing type, days on feed, initial and sale BW, feed efficiency (FE), percentage of concentrate, ADG, percentage death loss, feed cost and total cost/45.4kg of BW gain, breakeven sale price, non-feed variable cost, non-feed fixed cost, and corn price. Feeder cattle prices were calculated as feeder cattle price = [(breakeven sale price × sale BW) − (total cost of gain × gain)]/initial BW. Gains in 45.4-kg increments were calculated as gain = (sale BW − initial BW)/45.4. Fed cattle prices were obtained weekly from the report published by the USDA for Southern Minnesota and Iowa. Profit per head was calculated as profit = (sale BW × fed price) − [(total cost of gain × gain) + (feeder price × initial BW)]. Steers consumed more feed (P<0.0002), gained faster, were more efficient than heifers (P<0.0001), and tended to be more profitable (P>0.30) than heifers. Cattle housed under shelter generally gained more BW (P<0.0001) and were more efficient (P<0.004). With increasing initial BW, DMI and ADG increased, and cattle became less efficient (P<0.0001). Cattle ate less (P<0.01), gained more BW (P<0.05), and were more efficient with increasing concentrate level (P<0.0001). Cattle receiving lesser levels of concentrate were most profitable, and those receiving intermediate levels were least profitable (P<0.02). Season affected DMI (P<0.05) and FE (P<0.04). As the number of cattle per pen increased, DMI (P<0.05) and ADG (P<0.003) decreased, but FE was not affected (P>0.20). Fewer cattle per pen lead to greater (P<0.002) profit per head. Feeder and fed cattle prices explained ∼50% of the variation in profitability. Results indicate that performance and profitability of cattle feeding are rather complex and are affected by housing type, season, initial BW, concentrate level, sex, and pen cattle population.

Impacts of reproductive technologies on beef production in the United States

Abstract:Estimations of world population growth indicate that by the year 2050 we will reach nine billion habitants on earth. These estimates impose a tremendous challenge in the current agricultural systems as food supply will need to increase by 100 % in the next 40 years (Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations 2009). Beef will be a primary protein source that will assist in meeting the requirements for a portion of the protein in diets of this expanding global populace. Beef is a high-quality protein that contains all essential amino acids for the human body and also contains additional essential nutrients such as iron, zinc, B vitamins, riboflavin, selenium, choline, and conjugated linoleic acid (CLA). Adopting reproductive technologies at greater rates than currently used is a viable method to dramatically enhance production efficiency of beef cattle enterprises.Artificial insemination (AI), estrous synchronization and fixed-time AI (TAI), semen and embryo cryopreservation, multiple ovulation and embryo transfer (MOET), in vitro fertilization, sex determination of sperm or embryos, and nuclear transfer are technologies that are used to enhance the production efficiency of beef operations. In many cases, the development of these technologies is responsible for significant changes to traditional livestock production practices. However, adoption of these technologies appears to has not grown at the same rate in the United States as other formidable beef producing nations. For example, sales of beef semen for AI increased from 3.3 to 11.9 million units between 1993 and 2011 in Brazil, whereas that in the United States has increased from 2.9 to 3.8 million units during the same period. The significant increases in adoption of reproductive technologies in developing countries is likely as a result of the development of practical estrous synchronization and TAI systems that have allowed beef producers the opportunity to eliminate detection of estrus in their AI programs with a high degree of success. In the United States, slow adoption rates of these technologies may result in a future loss of international market share of beef products as other nations take advantage not only of the additional kilogram of beef that can be produced but also the improved quality of beef that can be realized through incorporation of reproductive technologies and resultant genetic improvement. However, current difficulties the US producers have with the incorporation of applied reproductive technologies, such as TAI, MOET, and sex semen, must not be the reason to overlook and incorporate more traditional reproductive technologies such as castration, breeding season management, or weaning. In many cases, beef producers in the United States fail to incorporate these more traditional technologies, which results in a reduction in production efficiency of the US beef industry. This chapter will focus on both traditional and more developed reproductive technologies that will play a role in enhancing future production efficiencies of the US beef cattle production system.

Abstract:Elasmobranchs (sharks and rays) show an amazing diversity of reproductive modes and behaviors. Multiple paternity (MP) has been identified in all species where more than 1 litter has been investigated; yet neither direct nor indirect benefits from MP have been determined in elasmobranchs. This has led to the suggestion that MP in this group may simply be a product of convenience polyandry with variation in the frequency of MP driven by differences in mate encounter rates. Here, we use molecular markers to investigate polyandry and MP in 2 closely related and commercially important species of shark, Mustelus antarcticus and Mustelus lenticulatus. In total, 328 M. antarcticus embryos originating from 29 different mothers and 75 M. lenticulatus embryos originating from 19 different mothers were genotyped using 8 microsatellite loci. We find that MP occurs in both species. However, in both species, the majority of litters were sired by a single father. Our results do not support increased fecundity per se as a driver of MP. Further, our results do not suggest that high population densities with resulting high mate encounter rates generated by breeding aggregations necessarily lead to high frequencies of MP. Importantly, we note evidence of reproductive skew within polyandrous litters, which is a predicted outcome of postcopulatory mechanisms.
168 Use of Genomic Tools to Improve Production Efficiency, Health Resilience and Carbon Footprint of Beef Production

Abstract:Abstract The aim is to present validation studies that demonstrate the benefits of genomic retained heterozygosity, genomic enhanced expected progeny differences (gEPDs) for feed efficiency and carcass traits, as well as DNA pooling technologies, to the beef industry. Team members of Livestock Gentec are global leaders in beef genomics research as evidenced by their leadership roles on the Canadian Cattle Genome Project, 1,000 Bull Genomes Project, gEPDs for Commercial Cattle Project and the Functional Annotation of ANimal Genomes initiative. These large-scale projects have created databases of 380 whole bovine sequence genomes, >24,000 cattle genotypes imputed to sequence variants using Run 6 genotypes from 1000 Bull Genomes project, and >20,000 cattle with associated phenotypes for feed efficiency, carcass quality, cow fertility and methane emissions. The use of admixture analysis, genome wide association studies, and genomic prediction have resulted in new genomic tools that aid in mate selection, improve herd heterosis, female fertility, lifetime productivity and health resilience, and improve accuracy (acc. >0.36) of gEPDs for 18 traits in crossbred cattle. Genomic retained heterozygosity has a benefit of $161/female over five parities while decreasing morbidity of calves and improving the carbon intensity of beef production. Multi-trait selection studies using gEPDs for residual feed intake (acc. > 0.35) have demonstrated annual rates of genetic progress of 0.7%. Validation studies have reported that sires with superior gEPDs for increased marbling, decreased grade fat, increased ribeye and increased carcass weight (acc. > 0.45) produced progeny with improved AAA retail cut yield (59.9 vs 56.7%). DNA pooling shows potential for cheaper genotyping while providing information on pooled records related to sire contribution, heterosis and performance as influenced by genetics. The application of these genomic tools has potential to improve calf crop percentage, health resilience, and retail cut yield while decreasing the carbon footprint of beef production.

Overview of common practices in calf raising facilities

Abstract:Abstract In this literature review, we overview some of the common management practices associated with calf rearing in specialized operations of the United States. Given the growing importance of dairy-beef calves entering the beef production of the United States, we overview aspects related to housing, nutrition, and health events during the pre- and post-weaning period. Based on data on dairy animals, we hypothesize how early life experiences could impact the feedlot performances of dairy-beef animals. Most of the large calf raising operations, where the majority of dairy-beef animals are raised, are located in the Central Great Plains and West regions of the United States. Approximately 80% of calves are individually housed, but the type of housing (e.g., outside hutch, inside a barn) varies based on location of calf-raising facilities. Milk-replacer is fed in more than 80% of operations, while milk (saleable or nonsaleable) is fed in approximately 30% of calf raising facilities (some operations fed more than one type of liquid diet). In addition to liquid feed, water and calf starter are offered ad libitum to calves. Adequate starter intake at weaning is crucial for feed transition from pre- to post-weaning period, which occurs at approximately 2 months of age. Then, calves are mainly housed in group pens and transition from calf-starter to total mixed ration (TMR). Health challenges such as scours and bovine respiratory disease (BRD) can hinder the performance of calves and are major causes of morbidity and mortality in calf ranches. Transportation at a very young age and comingling with animals from other dairies can increase the risk of diseases. Current research efforts are focusing on determining individual factors such as body weight (BW) at arrival or biomarkers of inflammation and stress that can be predictive of disease morbidity, mortality, and performance of calves. Future research should focus on how to utilize this information to optimize management and to develop targeted preventative strategies to reduce incidence of diseases and mortality and improve performance during the pre-weaned period. Also, more research is needed to understand how colostrum management, housing, and nutrition can impact the adult performance of dairy-beef animals.
19 Comparative Evaluation of Human-edible Animal Products Derived from Offspring of Genome Edited and Control Cattle

Abstract:Abstract Risk assessments of genetically modified (GM) animals include evaluating whether milk and meat derived from the GM animal is as nutritious to humans and/or animals as traditionally-bred animals. The underlying assumption of this comparative approach is that traditionally-bred animals have a well-established history of safe use. The goal of this project was to provide empirical data on the development and nutritional composition of animal products derived from the offspring of a genome edited dairy bull, homozygous for the dominant PC Celtic POLLED allele. The bull was crossed with horned Hereford (HH) cows (pp) to obtain five male and one female heterozygous hornless (RC) calves. Hereford, Angus and Holstein bulls were also bred to Hereford cows to produce five HH calves, two polled Angus/Hereford (AH) calves, and three horned Holstein/Hereford (HO) calves (with 25% genetic identity to the hornless offspring), respectively as contemporary controls. Weights were recorded at 8 months, 1 year and slaughter (n = 9–16). Following calving, individual quarters of the RC heifer (RC.calf1), one HO heifer (HO.calf2), two horned HH heifers, and one contemporaneous hornless AH cow (3113) were milked at varying timepoints during the first seven weeks of lactation. Meat samples were collected from the 6 hornless RC calves and 3 horned HO comparator offspring after slaughter. Proximate analysis was conducted for meat and milk samples. Cattle that inherited a POLLED allele from the genome-edited bull showed no differences in their overall growth (Figure 1) or meat composition (Figure 2) when compared to contemporary controls. Milk composition varied between animals and by days in milk (DIM), although values were within the normal range reported in peer-reviewed literature (Figure 3). Bovine milk composition is known to be influenced by breed, nutrition, parity, and DIM, making it difficult to obtain appropriate comparators in experiments with a limited number of GM animals.

[New species of Microsporidia in the genus Amblyospora from blood-sucking mosquitoes in the family Culicidae].

Abstract:Two microsporidians of the genus Amblyospora from mosquito larvae of Aedes and Culex were studied in Tomsk region (Siberia). Peculiarities of the sporogony and the meiospore ultrastructure were studied by light and electron microscopy. The meiospores of A. caspius sp. n. from Aedes caspius and Ae. communis measured on smears, were c. 4.8 x 3.6 microns in size. A polar filament was anisofilar with 5 wide (290 nm) and 9 narrow (190 nm) coils arranged in a single layer. A polaroplast of both species was composed of two parts: anterior lamellae and posterior fibrillae. Meiospores of A. burlaki sp. n. from Culex pipiens measured c. 4.8 x 3.5 microns. A polar filament was anisofilar with 3 wide (260 nm) and 6 narrow (110 nm) coils. The meiospore of this species had a 260 nm thick multilayered exospore.

Abstract:Female fertility is the foundation of the cow–calf industry, impacting both efficiency and profitability. Reproductive failure is the primary reason why beef cows are sold in the U.S. and the cause of an estimated annual gross loss of USD 2.8 billion. In this review, we discuss the status of the genomics, transcriptomics, and systems genomics approaches currently applied to female fertility and the tools available to cow–calf producers to maximize genetic progress. We highlight the opportunities and limitations associated with using genomic and transcriptomic approaches to discover genes and regulatory mechanisms related to beef fertility. Considering the complex nature of fertility, significant advances in precision breeding will rely on holistic, multidisciplinary approaches to further advance our ability to understand, predict, and improve reproductive performance. While these technologies have advanced our knowledge, the next step is to translate research findings from bench to on-farm applications.

Abstract:Abstract Cattle production within the US has and will continue to be negatively impacted by climate change. With the amount of natural resources and arable land decreasing every day, it is imperative to improve cattle production efficiency to meet the needs of the rapidly growing global population. Increasing the percentage of Bos indicus (BI) genetics within the US beef herd is one potential method of doing so, as BI cattle are better adapted to nutritional stress and increment weather when compared with Bos taurus (BT) cattle. Despite these positive attributes, BI cattle often have a more excitable temperament, exhibit decreased production performance, and have compromised carcass quality when compared with BT cattle. The objective of this study was to examine how breed type and genetic differences between BT and BT-BI crossbred cattle contribute to production performance, feeding behavior, and carcass quality in a temperate climate setting. This study utilized a total of 88 steers of two different breed types, Angus (AN; 100% BT) and Santa Gertrudis influenced (SG; 19% BI, 81% BT), and took place over 2 yr in 2020 (n = 23 AN and n = 9 SG) and 2021 (n = 35 AN and n = 21 SG). All steers were fed a typical feedlot ration, were housed in pens equipped with Vytelle units, and were harvested at a commercial facility once industry backfat standards were achieved. Statistical analysis was conducted using the Mixed Procedure of SAS with Tukey-Kramer adjustments. Production-related traits including dry matter intake (DMI), average daily gain (ADG), and feed efficiency (G:F) were not affected (P > 0.10) by breed type. Intramuscular fat was increased (P = 0.0003) in AN steers; however, other carcass traits including ribeye fat thickness, hot carcass weight (HCW), cold camera ribeye size, and cold camera yield grade were unaffected (P > 0.10) by breed type. Feeding behavior traits including the number and duration of bunk visits (BV) and feed bouts (FB) did not differ (P > 0.10) between breeds, but SG steers did spend more time with their heads down during such BV (P = 0.0047) and FB (P = 0.0078), respectively. To better examine the genomic differences between the two beef breeds, a Bovine GGP 100k assay was completed commercially and data were analyzed using models in SNP and Variation Suite. Following FDR corrections, SNPs with differences in allelic combinations that contributed to statistical significance were observed in ADG, DMI, HCW, marbling scores, and duration of BV and FB where the steers had their heads down. Potential breed effects were observed in marbling scores, cold camera yield grade, and cold camera ribeye size, however, due to the limited number of steers, additional research utilizing a larger population is warranted to validate such findings.

Abstract:Cattle production faces new challenges regarding sustainability with its three pillars - economic, societal and environmental. The following three main factors will drive dairy cattle selection in the future: (1) During a long period, intensive selection for enhanced productivity has deteriorated most functional traits, some reaching a critical point and needing to be restored. This is especially the case for the Holstein breed and for female fertility, mastitis resistance, longevity and metabolic diseases. (2) Genomic selection offers two new opportunities: as the potential genetic gain can be almost doubled, more traits can be efficiently selected; phenotype recording can be decoupled from selection and limited to several thousand animals. (3) Additional information from other traits can be used, either from existing traditional recording systems at the farm level or from the recent and rapid development of new technologies and precision farming. Milk composition (i.e. mainly fatty acids) should be adapted to better meet human nutritional requirements. Fatty acids can be measured through a new interpretation of the usual medium infrared spectra. Milk composition can also provide additional information about reproduction and health. Modern milk recorders also provide new information, that is, on milking speed or on the shape of milking curves. Electronic devices measuring physiological or activity parameters can predict physiological status like estrus or diseases, and can record behavioral traits. Slaughterhouse data may permit effective selection on carcass traits. Efficient observatories should be set up for early detection of new emerging genetic defects. In the near future, social acceptance of cattle production could depend on its capacity to decrease its ecological footprint. The first solution consists in increasing survival and longevity to reduce replacement needs and the number of nonproductive animals. At the individual level, selection on rumen activity may lead to decreased methane production and concomitantly to improved feed efficiency. A major effort should be dedicated to this new field of research and particularly to rumen flora metagenomics. Low input in cattle production is very important and tomorrow's cow will need to adapt to a less intensive production environment, particularly lower feed quality and limited care. Finally, global climate change will increase pathogen pressure, thus more accurate predictors for disease resistance will be required.

Abstract:Breeding companies and farmers rely on selection indices to identify sires they expect to improve production system profitability. Such indices combine estimates of genetic merit for individual traits with corresponding economic values that are fixed based on circumstances at a particular time. Perfect market competition has also been proposed as an economic basis to value alternative sires. The objective of this study was to propose an economic model and develop it for the evaluation of dairy sires. The pure competition model (PUC) was used to evaluate the relationship between a profitability index based on the PUC approach versus the traditional selection index approach for 330 dairy sires comprising Holstein-Friesians, Jerseys, and Ayrshires. The correlation between these 2 selection indices was only 0.56, indicating that the conventional selection index did not correlate well with an index based on the PUC model. In particular, the higher ranking bulls were overvalued using the conventional selection index. Our study concluded that the use of fixed economic values is problematic for the delivery of consistent rankings in selection indices. In contrast, sire rankings based on PUC are more reliable because the sires are evaluated on the basis of efficiency gains rather than production while accounting for market prices and marginal values of dairy outputs over time.
