Abstract:Bioelectrochemical system (BES) is an emerging technology for wastewater treatment. The urgent requirement for dealing with water shortage, wastewater treatment and reuse, energy generation, and resources recovery has promoted intensive research in BES during the last decade. This review summarizes the latest typical BES configurations based on specific functions, including microbial fuel cells (MFC), microbial electrolysis cells (MEC), microbial electrosynthesis systems (MSS), microbial desalination cells (MDC), microbial recycling cells (MRC), microbial solar cells (MSC), and microbial electrochemical snorkel (MES). The removal of contaminants, particularly emerging organic, non-metallic, metallic, and metalloid contaminants, and the recovery of resources in the form of bioenergy, biofuel, nutrients, metals, and metalloids in wastewater treatment using BES technology have been reviewed in this work. Limitations of BES technology in terms of reactor performance, scale-up, and construction costs for real-world wastewater treatment applications are discussed and future research directions needed for the successful deployment of BES technology are proposed.

Abstract:Bioelectrochemical systems (BESs), in which microorganisms are utilized as a self-regenerable catalyst at the anode of an electrochemical cell to directly extract electrical energy from organic matter, have been widely recognized as a promising technology for energy-efficient wastewater treatment or even for net energy generation. However, currently BES performance is constrained by poor cathode reaction kinetics. Thus, there is a strong impetus to improve the cathodic catalysis performance through proper selection and design of catalysts. This review introduces the fundamentals and current development status of various cathodic catalysts (including electrocatalysts, photoelectrocatalysts and bioelectrocatalysts) in BES, identifies their limitations and influential factors, compares their catalytic performances in terms of catalytic efficiency, stability, selectivity, etc., and discusses the possible optimization strategies and future research directions. Special focus is given on the analysis of how the catalytic performance of different catalysts can be improved by fine tuning their physicochemical or physiological properties.
Electrochemical Regulation on the Metabolism of Anode Biofilms under Persistent Exogenous Bacteria Interference

Abstract:The microbial electrochemical systems (MESS) demonstrate advantages in wastewater treatment for enhanced organic contaminants removal by electron flow. Comprehensive investigation of anode metabolism for fermentable substrate, represented by glucose, under electrochemical regulation was essential to understand the operation mechanism of MESs. The anodic COD (chemical oxygen demand) degradation reaction w simulated as a superposition of first-order (background COD remove) and zeroorder reaction (anode-respiring COD remove) to COD concentration. Even though the background COD degradation wasn't directly related with anodic respiration to form electron flow, it was accelerated by increasing current rather than the changed electrode potentials. Statistically, the kinetic constant of background COD degradation generally exhibited a positive linear correlation (R-2 = 0.7822) with current. In overall COD removal increment enhanced by electron flow, the improvement of background COD degradation accounted for a relatively stable proportion of 33%. The anode-respiring and background metabolism successively exhibited competition (100-500 mg L-1) and synergy (500-1500 mg L-1) with increasing COD concentration, before being restricted by excessive COD loading (above 1500 mg L-1). The stratification and function differentiation were observed in anode biofilm. The dark-red dense inner layer close to anode surface was directionally enriched anode-respiring bacteria (ARB) like Geobacter (16.23%) and Pseudomonas (13.04%), while the white incompact outer layer separated inner layer from exogenous bacteria interference as a transition layer and assisted for the degradation of fermentable substrate. The anode biofilm helped for the progressive degradation of glucose and the formation of stable electrochemical active inner layer under persistent exogenous bacteria interference. A combined experimental and computational approach to unravel degradation mechanisms in electrochemical wastewater treatment

Abstract:Electrochemical wastewater treatment is a promising technique to remove recalcitrant pollutants from wastewater. However, the complexity of elucidating the underlying degradation mechanisms hinders its optimisation not only from a techno-economic perspective, as it is desirable to maximise removal efficiencies at low energy and chemical requirements, but also in environmental terms, as the generation of toxic by-products is an ongoing challenge. In this work, we propose a novel combined experimental and computational approach to (i) estimate the contribution of radical and non-radical mechanisms as well as their synergistic effects during electrochemical oxidation and (ii) identify the optimal conditions that promote specific degradation pathways. As a case study, the distribution of the degradation mechanisms involved in the removal of benzoic acid (BA) via boron-doped diamond (BDD) anodes was elucidated and analysed as a function of several operating parameters, i.e., the initial sulfate and nitrate content of the wastewater and the current applied. Subsequently, a multivariate optimisation study was conducted, where the influence of the electrode nature was investigated for two commercial BDD electrodes and a customised silver-decorated BDD electrode. Optimal conditions were identified for each degradation mechanism as well as for the overall BA degradation rate constant. BDD selection was found to be the most influential factor favouring any mechanism (i.e., 52-85% contribution), given that properties such as its boron doping and the presence of electrodeposited silver could dramatically affect the reactions taking place. In particular, decorating the BDD surface with silver microparticles significantly enhanced BA degradation via sulfate radicals, whereas direct oxidation, reactive oxygen species and radical synergistic effects were promoted when using a commercial BDD material with higher boron content and on a silicon substrate. Consequently, by simplifying the identification and quantification of underlying mechanisms, our approach facilitates the elucidation of the most suitable degradation route for a given electrochemical wastewater treatment together with its optimal operating conditions.

Novel self-stratifying bioelectrochemical system for municipal wastewater treatment halves nitrous oxide emissions

Abstract:Reducing carbon footprint and greenhouse gas emissions are prime global goals. Wastewater treatment contributes significantly, and this study developed a technology with a focus on utilisation in small-decentralised plants. Bioelectrochemical systems (BES) utilise bacteria to remove pollutants while generating power and a range of experiments were performed to investigate their suitability compared to conventional trickling filters. A lab-based trickling filter was inferior to one adapted with electrodes both in terms of organic matter (COD) and phosphate reduction, but the BES did not generate electrical output due to inferior cathode configuration. An enhanced, novel, dual-BES system was developed with improved cathode positioning and operated as a cascade. This demonstrated improved COD (79 %) and total nitrogen (102 %) removal over the trickling filter. Concomitantly it emitted 47 % less N2O and generated an electrical output of 0.62 mA at 311 mV. Further work is needed to optimise BES but these results are encouraging in the development of sustainable biotechnologies.
Unravelling the mechanisms of organic micropollutant removal in bio-electrochemical systems: Insights into sorption, electrochemical degradation, and biodegradation processes

Abstract:Bio-electrochemical systems (BESs) have recently been proposed as an efficient treatment technology to remove organic micropollutants from water treatment plants. In this study, we aimed to differentiate between sorption, electrochemical transport/degradation, and biodegradation. Using electro-active microorganisms and electrodes, we investigated organic micropollutant removal at environmentally relevant concentrations, clarifying the roles of sorption and electrochemical and biological degradation. The role of anodic biofilms on the removal of 10 relevant organic micropollutants was studied by performing separate sorption experiments on carbon-based electrodes (graphite felt, graphite rod, graphite granules, and granular activated carbon) and electrochemical degradation experiments at two different electrode potentials (-0.3 and 0 V). Granular activated carbon showed the highest sorption of micropollutants; applying a potential to graphite felt electrodes increased organic micropollutant removal. Removal efficiencies >80 % were obtained for all micropollutants at high anode potentials (+0.955 V), indicating that the studied compounds were more susceptible to oxidation than to reduction. All organic micropollutants showed removal when under bio-electrochemical conditions, ranging from low (e.g. metformin, 9.3 %) to exceptionally high removal efficiencies (e.g. sulfamethoxazole, 99.5 %). The lower removal observed under bio-electrochemical conditions when compared to only electrochemical conditions indicated that sorption to the electrode is key to guarantee high electrochemical degradation. The detection of transformation products of chloridazon and metformin indicated that (bio)-electrochemical degradation occurred. This study confirms that BES can treat some organic micropollutants through several mechanisms, which merits further investigation.

Abstract:Bioelectrochemical systems (BES) are promising technologies to convert organic compounds in wastewater to electrical energy through a series of complex physical-chemical, biological and electrochemical processes. Representative BES such as microbial fuel cells (MFCs) have been studied and advanced for energy recovery. Substantial experimental and modeling efforts have been made for investigating the processes involved in electricity generation toward the improvement of the BES performance for practical applications. However, there are many parameters that will potentially affect these processes, thereby making the optimization of system performance hard to be achieved. Mathematical models, including engineering models and statistical models, are powerful tools to help understand the interactions among the parameters in BES and perform optimization of BES configuration/operation. This review paper aims to introduce and discuss the recent developments of BES modeling from engineering and statistical aspects, including analysis on the model structure, description of application cases and sensitivity analysis of various parameters. It is expected to serves as a compass for integrating the engineering and statistical modeling strategies to improve model accuracy for BES development.
Spatially-assembled Binary Carbon Anode Synergizing Directional Electron Transfer and Enriched Microbe Accommodation for Wastewater Treatment and Energy Conversion: From Simulation to Experiments

Abstract:Bioelectrochemical systems (BESs) hold prospects in wastewater energy and resource recovery. Anode optimization is important for simultaneous enhancement of wastewater energy conversion and effluent quality in BESs. In this study, a multi-physics model coupling fluid flow, organic degradation and electrochemical process was constructed to guide the design and optimization of BES anodes. Based on the multi-physics simulation, spatially-assembled binary carbon anodes composed of three-dimensional carbon mesh skeleton and granular activated carbon were proposed and established. The granular activated carbon conducive to microbe accommodation played a vital role in improving effluent water quality, while the carbon mesh skeleton favoring electron collection and transfer could enhance the bioelectricity output. With an average chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal rate of 0.442 kg m −3 d −1 , a maximum power density of 20.6 W m −3 was achieved in the optimized composite anode BES, which was 25% and 154% higher than carbon mesh skeleton BES and granular activated carbon BES. Electroactive bacteria were enriched in composite anodes and performed important functions related to microbial metabolism and energy production. Spatially-assembled binary carbon anode with low carbon mesh packing density was more cost-effective with a daily energy output per anode cost of 221 J d −1 RMB −1 . This study not only provides a cost-efficient alternative anode to simultaneously improve organic degradation and power generation performance, but also demonstrates the potential of multi-physics simulation in offering theoretical support and prediction for BES configuration design as well as optimization.

Abstract:Bioelectrochemical system (BES) empowered by electrochemically active microorganisms (EAMs) has a great potential for wastewater treatment. However, their low extracellular electron transfer (EET) capability has restricted the application of BES. In this work, we applied synthetic biology methodology to fundamentally engineer electroactive bacterium for promoted wastewater treatment. At multiple layers, four different genetic engineering strategies, including directly engineering the EET pathways, engineering the bacterial universal messenger, repressing the electron competing reductase, and dynamically managing EET output, were developed and implemented in Shewanella oneidensis, an important model EAM species. The genetic engineered strains improved up to 4.8- and 2.5-fold improvement of current densities over the control in microbial electrosynthesis cell and microbial fuel cell assessments, respectively. Furthermore, using the methyl orange and Cr(VI)-laden wastewaters as the target, the engineered strains exhibited substantially promoted treatment efficiency, achieving up to 18.5- and 5.5-fold over the control. Remarkably, the dynamic control strategy achieved the greatest improvement for wastewater treatment. This study not only provides effective genetic engineering strategies to promote BES performance for wastewater treatment, but also demonstrates the importance of managing EET from the cellular resource partitioning layer for more efficient wastewater treatment.

Electrified bioreactors: the next power-up for biometallurgical wastewater treatment

Abstract:Over the past decades, biological treatment of metallurgical wastewaters has become commonplace. Passive systems require intensive land use due to their slow treatment rates, do not recover embedded resources and are poorly controllable. Active systems however require the addition of chemicals, increasing operational costs and possibly negatively affecting safety and the environment. Electrification of biological systems can reduce the use of chemicals, operational costs, surface footprint and environmental impact when compared to passive and active technologies whilst increasing the recovery of resources and the extraction of products. Electrification of low rate applications has resulted in the development of bioelectrochemical systems (BES), but electrification of high rate systems has been lagging behind due to the limited mass transfer, electron transfer and biomass density in BES. We postulate that for high rate applications, the electrification of bioreactors, for example, through the use of electrolyzers, may herald a new generation of electrified biological systems (EBS). In this review, we evaluate the latest trends in the field of biometallurgical and microbial-electrochemical wastewater treatment and discuss the advantages and challenges of these existing treatment technologies. We advocate for future research to focus on the development of electrified bioreactors, exploring the boundaries and limitations of these systems, and their validity upon treating industrial wastewaters.

Abstract:Recalcitrant wastes including dyes, pesticides, explosives, heavy metals, polyalcohols, furan derivatives and phenolic substances, are of special concern owing to their recalcitrance and persistence in the environment. Bioelectrochemical systems (BESs) including microbial fuel cells (MFCs) and microbial electrolysis cells (MECs), integrate three important wastewater treatment options, namely, biological treatment, electrolytic dissociation and electrochemical oxidation/reduction, and are regarded as a new sustainable and effective strategy for treatment of these wastes. The simultaneous and cooperative roles of these multiple units running in parallel in BESs contribute to the efficiency of recalcitrant waste treatment, while substrate metabolism is considered to be a key step triggering different unit operations. An up‐to‐date review is provided on recent research and development in BESs‐based recalcitrant wastes treatment. MFCs and MECs, as two types of BESs, are summarized in terms of treatment efficiency, recalcitrant substance metabolic pathway and microorganism diversity after a brief introduction to the electrochemical process for recalcitrant waste treatment. Abstract:The rapid global economic growth driven by industrialization and population expansion has resulted in significant issues, including reliance on fossil fuels, energy scarcity, water crises, and environmental emissions. To address these issues, bioelectrochemical systems (BES) have emerged as a dual-purpose solution, harnessing electrochemical processes and the capabilities of electrochemically active microorganisms (EAM) to simultaneously recover energy and treat wastewater. This review examines critical performance factors in BES, including inoculum selection, pretreatment methods, electrodes, and operational conditions. Further, authors explore innovative approaches to suppress methanogens and simultaneously enhance the EAM in mixed cultures. Additionally, advanced techniques for detecting EAM are discussed. The rapid detection of EAM facilitates the selection of suitable inoculum sources and optimization of enrichment strategies in BESs. This optimization is essential for facilitating the successful scaling up of BES applications, contributing substantially to the realization of clean energy and sustainable wastewater treatment. This analysis introduces a novel viewpoint by amalgamating contemporary research on the selective enrichment of EAM in mixed cultures. It encompasses identification and detection techniques, along with methodologies tailored for the selective enrichment of EAM, geared explicitly toward upscaling applications in BES.

Abstract:Bioelectrochemical system (BES) is an emerging technology that can treat wastewater via microbial activity while producing energy simultaneously. The system can couple with conventional systems to improve system performance. This study aims to compare the environmental performance of BES and the integrated microbial fuel cell (MFC) systems via a life cycle assessment methodology and identify the major environmental hotspots of the system. Fifteen treatment options are assessed with the ReCiPe 2016 characterization method using SimaPro 9.2 software. The results show double chamber air-cathode microbial electrolysis cell (MEC1) and membrane distillation integrated MFC (MD + MFC) treatment options present as the most environmental favourable among the BES and integrated MFC systems, respectively, due to the offset of the environmental loads from the avoided impacts contributed by their value-added by-product, which is hydrogen fuel for MEC1 and tap water for MD + MFC. Electricity consumption dominates the environmental loads of all the BES options for up to 90% of the global warming impact category. The environmental benefits from the electricity generation of BES are minor (i.e., MFC: 0.01–2% while microbial desalination cell: 0.01–7% of the total environmental impact in a system) to offset the environmental loads incurred by the system. Platinum-based cathode incurs 2.5–24 times higher environmental burdens than non-platinum configurations in MFC under the human carcinogenic toxicity impact category. In line with Sustainable Development Goals 6 and 13, this study provides scientific references to wastewater treatment stakeholders in selecting suitable BES and integrated MFC systems to improve water sanitation and address climate change simultaneously.

Optimization of an integrated electrodisinfection/electrocoagulation process with Al bipolar electrodes for urban wastewater reclamation

Abstract:In this work, a novel integrated electrochemical process for urban wastewater regeneration is described. The electrochemical cell consists in a Boron Doped Diamond (BDD) or a Dimensionally Stable Anode (DSA) as anode, a Stainless Steel (SS) as cathode and a perforated aluminum plate, which behaves as bipolar electrode, between anode and cathode. Thus, in this cell, it is possible to carry out, at the same time, two different electrochemical processes: electrodisinfection (ED) and electrocoagulation (EC). The treatment of urban wastewater with different anodes and different operating conditions is studied. First of all, in order to check the process performance, experiments with synthetic wastewaters were carried out, showing that it is possible to achieve a 100% of turbidity removal by the electrodissolution of the bipolar electrode. Next, the effect of the current density and the anode material are studied during the ED-EC process of actual effluents. Results show that it is possible to remove Escherichia coli and turbidity simultaneously of an actual effluent from a WasteWater Treatment Facility (WWTF). The use of BDD anodes allows to remove the E. coli completely at an applied electric charge of 0.0077 A h dm(-3) when working with a current density of 6.65 A m(-2). On the other hand, with DSA anodes, the current density necessary to achieve the total removal of E. coli is higher (11.12 A m(-2)) than that required with BDD anodes. Finally, the influence of cell flow path and flow rate have been studied. Results show that the performance of the process strongly depends on the characteristics of the initial effluent (E. coli concentration and Cl(-)/NH(4)(+) initial ratio) and that a cell configuration cathode (inlet)-anode (outlet) and a higher flow rate enhance the removal of the turbidity from the treated effluent.
Industrial bioelectrochemistry for waste valorization: State of the art and challenges

Abstract:Bioelectrochemistry has gained importance in recent years for some of its applications on waste valorization, such as wastewater treatment and carbon dioxide conversion, among others. The aim of this review is to provide an updated overview of the applications of bioelectrochemical systems (BESs) for waste valorization in the industry, identifying current limitations and future perspectives of this technology. BESs are classified according to biorefinery concepts into three different categories: (i) waste to power, (ii) waste to fuel and (iii) waste to chemicals. The main issues related to the scalability of bioelectrochemical systems are discussed, such as electrode construction, the addition of redox mediators and the design parameters of the cells. Among the existing BESs, microbial fuel cells (MFCs) and microbial electrolysis cells (MECs) stand out as the more advanced technologies in terms of implementation and R&D investment. However, there has been little transfer of such achievements to enzymatic electrochemical systems. It is necessary that enzymatic systems learn from the knowledge reached with MFC and MEC to accelerate their development to achieve competitiveness in the short term.

Abstract:With advancements in research and the necessity of improving the performance of bioelectrochemical system (BES), coupling anaerobic digestion (AD) with BES is crucial for energy gain from wastewater and bioremediation. Hybridization of BES-AD concept opens new avenues for pollutant degradation, carbon capture and nutrient-resource recovery from wastewater. The strength of merging BES-AD lies in synergy, and this approach was employed to differentiate fads from strategies with the potential for full-scale implementation and making it an energy-positive system. The integration of BES and AD system increases the overall performance and complexity of combined system and the cost of operation. From a technical standpoint, the primary determinants of BES-AD feasibility for field applications are the scalability and economic viability. High potential market for such integrated system attract industrial partners for more industrial trials and investment before commercialization. Abstract:The interest in the use of electroactive microorganisms for different applications by means of bioelectrochemical systems (BES) has been constantly increasing since the last decade. The main application of BES among others, which has received a widespread attention and researched extensively, is the microbial fuel cell (MFC) technology that relies on the electrogenic nature of certain bacteria to simultaneously treat different wastewaters and produce electric power. Various types of wastewaters have been examined as substrates for feeding bacteria in MFCs. The number and complexity of wastewaters have increased rapidly over the last few years thus necessitating the need for documenting this data further. This review provides a comprehensive and the state-of-the-art information on various wastewater substrates that have been used in MFCs. The performance of different types (designs) of MFCs in terms of electric current and power outputs together with the wastewater treatment efficiency in terms of chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal and columbic efficiency (CE) is presented. Some of the challenges and future perspectives with regard to the energy recovery from wastewaters using MFCs are briefly discussed.

Biomimetic Anode with Atomically Dispersed Iron Sites to Enhance Biotic-Abiotic Interfacial Interaction Towards Efficient Wastewater Energy Recovery in Bioelectrochemical Systems

Abstract:Bioelectrochemical systems (BESs) are promising for future wastewater treatment towards carbon neutrality. Hemes, as the active centers of outer-membrane c-type cytochromes, play an important role in anodic electron transfer. In this work, a biomimetic Fe-Nx incorporated carbon membrane (Fe-NCM) mimicking the heme active center was proposed based on a nanocage confinement-electrospinning strategy and applied as the anode in BESs. The aligned carbon fibers with high electrical conductivity could serve as the electron "expressway" for swift electron transfer while the Fe-Nx nexus served as the "gas station" and endowed the membrane anode with boosted redox activity. The Fe-NCM anode featuring great biocompatibility and electrochemical activity was conducive to microbe adhesion and biotic-abiotic interfacial interaction. The power output and chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal rate constant in the BES with this Fe-NCM anode reached 1406 +/- 44 mW m- 2 and 0.42 +/- 0.01 h-1 under filtration operation mode, which were 156% and 191% as high as those of the pristine carbon membrane. The introduction of Fe-Nx species exerted a significant influence on the anodic biofilm property, composition and function, which were of importance to bolstering wastewater energy conversion. Metagenomics unveiled that simultaneous intensification of intracellular electron production and extracellular electron transfer processes was achieved in the Fe-NCM BES. The Fe-NCM anode with electroactive Fe-Nx sites facilitated the biotic-abiotic interfacial interaction in BESs and highlighted the rational design of anodes for efficient waste-water treatment and energy conversion.

Abstract:AbstractNutrient-rich waste streams from domestic and industrial sources and the increasing application of synthetic fertilizers have resulted in a huge-scale influx of reactive nitrogen and phosphorus in the environment. The higher concentrations of these pollutants induce eutrophication and foster degradation of aquatic biodiversity. Besides, phosphorus being non-renewable resource is under the risk of rapid depletion. Hence, recovery and reuse of the phosphorus and nitrogen are necessary. Over the years, nutrient recovery, low-carbon energy, and sustainable bioremediation of wastewater have received significant interest. The conventional wastewater treatment technologies have higher energy demand and nutrient removal entails a major cost in the treatment process. For these issues, bio-electrochemical system (BES) has been considered as sustainable and environment friendly wastewater treatment technologies that utilize the energy contained in the wastewater so as to recovery nutrients and purify wastewater. Therefore, this article comprehensively focuses and critically analyzes the potential sources of nutrients, working mechanism of BES, and different nutrient recovery strategies to unlock the upscaling opportunities. Also, economic analysis was done to understand the technical feasibility and potential market value of recovered nutrients. Hence, this review article will be useful in establishing waste management policies and framework along with development of advanced configurations with major emphasis on nutrient recovery rather than removal from the waste stream.
