Abstract:Strain energy is one of the key factors that control the brittle failure process of rock mass, such as the onset of accelerating displacement. The phenomenon of accelerating displacement is a necessary and important precursor to predict the brittle failure of rock, and it is attributed to the unstable propagation of micro-cracks when the load reaches or exceeds the crack damage stress threshold. Thus, for the design of underground rock engineering and to ensure proper safety practices, it is important to propose a suitable strain energy criterion that uses the strain energy at the crack damage stress threshold (Wcd) to predict the strain energy at final failure (Wucs). For this purpose, a quantitative strain energy indicator (Wucs/Wcd) was proposed based on two-dimensional renormalization group theory for the prediction of the brittle failure of laboratory-scale rock samples subjected to uniaxial pressure. The indicator is a function of the homogeneity index, m, of the Weibull distribution. The reliability of the strain energy indicator was verified by a series of uniaxial compression tests on 12 shale samples that had different homogeneity indices, m. The heterogeneity of the sample was dominated by different bedding dip angles. The experimental results showed that the quantitative indicator could be used to predict the brittle failure of samples of any type of rock at the laboratory scale using their m values. In addition, the effect of the bedding dip angle on the homogeneity index, m, and the strain energy indicator were discussed based on the experimental results to provide a better understanding of the relationships among heterogeneity, the strain energy indicator, and the other physical and mechanical properties of the shale samples that were tested. Also, the discussion included the effects of the homogeneity of the sample and the strain energy indicator on the physical and mechanical properties of the samples. As a result, some conclusions were obtained that might be applicable to laboratory-scale shale samples.
Experimental Investigation of Pre-Flawed Rocks under Dynamic Loading: Insights from Fracturing Characteristics and Energy Evolution

Abstract:Different fractures exist widely in rock mass and play a significant role in their deformation and strength properties. Crack rocks are often subjected to dynamic disturbances, which exist in many fields of geotechnical engineering practices. In this study, dynamic compression tests were carried out on rock specimens with parallel cracks using a split hopkinson pressure bar apparatus. Tests determined the effects of strain rate and crack intensity on dynamic responses, including progressive failure behavior, rock fragmentation characteristics, and energy dissipation. Based on the crack classification method, tensile-shear mixed cracking dominates the failure of rock specimens under the action of impact loading. Increasing the flaw inclination angle from 0°-90° changes the predominant cracking mechanism from tensile cracking to mixed tensile-shear cracking. The larger the loading rate, the more obvious the cracking mechanism, which indicates that the loading rate can promote the cracking failure of rock specimens. The fragmentation analysis shows that rock samples are significantly broken at higher loading rates, and higher loading rates lead to smaller average fragment sizes; therefore, the larger the fractal dimension is, the more uniform the broken fragments of smaller sizes are. Energy utilization efficiency decreases while energy dissipation density increases with increasing strain rate. For a given loading rate, the energy absorption density and energy utilization efficiency first decrease and then increase with increasing flaw inclination, while the rockburst tendency of rock decreases initially and then increases. We also find that the elastic-plastic strain energy density increases linearly with the total input energy density, confirming that the linear energy property of granite has not been altered by the loading rate. According to this inherent property, the peak elastic strain energy of the crack specimen can be calculated accurately. On this basis, the rockburst proneness of granite can be determined quantitatively using the residual elastic energy index, and the result is consistent with the intensity of actual rockburst for the specimens.

Abstract:In sharp contrast to prefabricated cracks, the damage to rock masses resulting from external disturbances such as excavation disturbances and tectonic movement varies substantially as to the incidence, density, and magnitude of defects. The growth ratio of the energy dissipation density proportion D ( R ω ( α )) of the damaged rock under impact loading is closely related to the static damage factor D ( α ) and is theoretically explored based on the Weibull distribution in this paper. Sandstones with varied damage levels after distinct static precompression, as described by CT imaging, are used to evaluate the impact load of different driving pressures. In addition, a high-speed camera and geometric fractal are used to exhibit the ejection and fragmentation characteristics of the pulverized sandstones after impact loading. The experimental outcomes confirm the theoretical study where the function of D ( R ω ( α )) involving D ( α ) obeys the Weibull distribution, and the D ( R ω ( α )) slowly rises with the expansion of the damage factor. With the increase of either the damage level or driving pressure of the sandstone, the number of pulverized rocks, the fragmentation degree, and the D ( R ω ( α )) all increase. These results further advance rock dynamic theory and corroborate the energy evolution, ejection, and fragmentation characteristics of damaged sandstone under impact loading. These results can also serve as references for rock dynamic risk mitigation under dynamic catastrophes..

Abstract:Many rock engineering projects show that the growth of tensile cracks is often an important cause of engineering disasters, and the mechanical behavior of rocks is essentially the transmission, storage, dissipation and release of energy. To investigate the tensile behavior of rock from the perspective of energy, uniaxial tension tests (UTTs) and uniaxial compression tests (UCTs) were carried out on three typical rocks (granite, sandstone and marble). Different unloading points were set before the peak stress to separate elastic energy and dissipated energy. The input energy density u t , elastic energy density u e , and dissipated energy density u d at each unloading point were calculated by integrating stress-strain curves. The results show that there is a strong linear relationship between the three energy parameters and the square of the unloading stress in UCT, but this linear relationship is weaker in UTT. The u e and u d increase linearly with the increase in u t in UCT and UTT. Based on the phenomenon that u e and u d increase linearly with u t , the applicability of Wetp index in UTT was proved and the relative energy storage capacity and absolute energy distribution characteristics of three rocks in UCT and UTT were evaluated. The tensile behavior of marble and sandstone in UTT can be divided into two stages vaguely according to the energy distribution, but granite is not the case. In addition, based on dissipated energy, the damage evolution of three types of rocks in UCT and UTT was discussed. Abstract:<p>Internal initiation and propagation of micro cracks in rock materials might result in macroscopic fragmentation and energy dissipation under dynamic strain rate. Understanding the internal mechanism of rock failure and energy consumption is significant in assessing the stability of engineering rock mass under dynamic disturbance. This study experimentally investigated the energy dissipation and fragment distribution of rock specimens containing symmetrical and asymmetrical cross fissures under static and dynamic loadings. Our results reveal that the dynamic strength of rock specimens evidently increases with increasing strain rate, while the dynamic elastic modulus does not depend on the loading rate. For a given dynamic strain rate, the rock specimens containing asymmetrical cross fissures (one of the fissures had a relatively large dip angle) had higher dynamic strengths than those containing symmetrical cross fissures. During loading process, tensile cracks and shear cracks significantly affect the failure patterns of cross-fissured rock specimens under static and dynamic loadings, respectively. All the cross-fissured specimens show similar "X" shaped shear failure mode regardless of fissure configuration subjected to dynamic strain rate. The cross-fissured rock specimens with higher strain rates feature smaller location parameter and scale parameter of the fragment size distribution by GEV fitting. The fractal dimension of cross-fissured specimens show an evident loading rate dependence, and the size distribution of the fragments in asymmetrically cross-fissured specimens under dynamic loading is most homogeneous. The dissipated energy density of all the rock specimens obviously increase as the dynamic strain rate increases, while the energy utilization efficiency is less affected by the strain rate.</p>

Abstract:To explore the mechanical characteristics and failure mechanisms of rock shear fracture under dynamic disturbance, the laboratory shear test and numerical simulation based on particle flow code (PFC) were carried out, and the mesoscopic degradation characteristics and energy dissipation mechanisms of rock shear fracture were analyzed. The results show that: (1) The crack initiation stress of rock under the disturbance condition is relatively reduced by 20%–29%, and there is a “shear fracture weakening effect.” The frequent alternating effect of stress concentration and release at the post‐peak failure stage is more obvious. (2) The number of cracks in rock under shear action shows the evolution of “calm → low speed growth → rapid increase → decrease of amplification → stabilization” with the increase of shear displacement. Compared with the conventional shear test, more cracks, and wider debris zones are formed. The number of cracks increases by 53%–106%, and the number of debris increases by 31%–138%. (3) The energy change trend of disturbance shear fracture test is basically consistent with that of conventional shear test. With the increase of normal stress, the input energy, elastic strain energy and dissipation energy of rock failure point show a certain linear growth feature. Compared with the conventional shear test, the input energy and stored strain energy of the failure point in the disturbance shear test are smaller, with relative reduction of 16.5% and 22.1%. Namely, the normal frequent disturbance reduces the energy storage capacity and failure resistance of rock.

Abstract:<p>The mechanisms for rock failure involve instability, where an energy exchange and transformation occurs between the rock and an external energy source. Few studies have been conducted on rock failure characteristics in terms of the energy evolution under different loading rates. This study investigated the damage resulting from brittle granite failure under loading rates of 0.001, 0.005, 0.01, and 0.05 mm/s from the energy perspective. The results showed that the elastic and scattered strain energies absorbed in the initial compression phase were small. The elastic strain energy absorbed in the rock elasticity stage was mainly stored in the form of elastic energy, and the rate of increase for the scattered energy was less than those for the total strain energy and elastic strain energy. In the dilatation and breaking stage, the scattered energy increased sharply, elastic energy was rapidly released, and rock bursting accompanied the breaking. The loading rate increased from 0.001 mm/s to 0.05 mm/s, total strain energy increased by 91%, elastic energy increased by 48%, and spread energy increased by 184%. At the first stage of loading, the damage variable of the rock mass was small. With an increase in the loading rate, the damage variable of the rock sample gradually increased. When the stress reached its peak value, the damage variable rapidly increased. Under the same stress, a greater loading rate resulted in a greater change in the damage variable.</p>

Abstract:In consideration of the influence of energy dissipation on the rock compression process, the traditional elastic stress-strain relationship was improved by adding the energy release rate. The microintensity of the rock was assumed to satisfy the Weibull distribution. The improved stress-strain relationship was transformed into a triaxial stress-strain model in consideration of the loading damage combined with mesodamage mechanics. The characteristic points of the stress-strain curve and the experimental data were utilized to calculate the distribution parameters of the rock under different conditions. The model curve was compared with the experimental data. Results showed that the stress-strain curve of the rock has peak points in the conventional triaxial compression test, but the radial peak of the rock was not evident in the unloading test. The energy of the rock under the loading path was smaller than that under the unloading path. The model curve exhibited a high degree of fitting with the experimental data, and its correlation coefficient was relatively large (> 0.90), which indicated that the model can clearly represent the actual damage and evolution law of the surrounding rock. Furthermore, the established model can also reflect the rock's stress-strain relationship, which can serve as a practical guide for relevant applications. Finally, the distribution parameters also reflected the evolution law of rock energy and provided a method for the assessment of rock energy and damage trend.

Abstract:The accurate identification and quantification of rock damage are important for the reliable safety assessment of rock engineering. In this paper, stress-strain behavior, passive acoustic emission (AE), and active ultrasonic transmission were measured simultaneously under uniaxial compression to characterize the fracture damage of granites. The deformation and acoustic behaviors with respect to crack initiation and crack damage thresholds were analyzed. Meanwhile, irreversible damage was quantified using different methods. The results show that the marked increase in the AE rate and the average hit energy coincide with the crack initiation stress, ranging from 0.41σc–0.45σc (uniaxial compressive strength), which occurs earlier than the decrease of the P -wave velocity and onset of the rock dilation. The moment in which the average hit energy and ratio of low-frequency AEs start to increase rapidly corresponds to the crack damage stress of 0.71σc–0.74σc . In addition, the fracture damage was quantified by the crack volumetric strain, dissipated energy, modulus loss, AE characteristics, b value (defined as the log-linear slope of the frequency-magnitude distribution of AEs), and ultrasonic properties. It is revealed that the majority of rock damage accumulates after the crack damage stress, corresponding to the appearance of most high-magnitude hypocenters. Rock damage quantified by dissipated energy and AE energy with clear physical meaning is more reasonable and less subjective. Moreover, the precipitous reduction of the b value, a sharp increase in AE energy, and the ratio of low-frequency AEs prior to peak failure is a perfect precursor of potentially brittle failure.

Abstract:Rockburst hazards exhibit different spatiotemporal characteristics in deep tunnel excavation. Failure characteristics and energy evolution process of delayed and instantaneous rockburst of basalt rock were investigated based on single-sided unloading experiments under true triaxial conditions. High-speed photography and acoustic emission (AE) monitoring were used, and computed tomography (CT) scanning, fractal theory, and crack classification were employed for failure analysis. A three-dimensional damage model considering variable stiffness of testing machine was established to calculate the energy evolution of rock-machine system during the entire process of rockbursts. Results show that delayed rockburst includes three stages of small particles ejection, rock slab buckling, and violent mixed ejection, while instantaneous rockburst is characterized by rock slab spalling accompanied with slight particles ejection. Delayed rockburst exhibits a progressive failure mode of large-scale expansion of tensile cracks (before failure) to small-scale penetration of shear cracks (upon failure), while instantaneous rockburst shows a large-scale shear failure and abrupt penetration of shear planes upon failure. Delayed rockburst consumes less energy, and most of dissipated energy is converted into kinetic energy of ejected rock fragments, causing a higher intensity level of rockburst; instantaneous rockburst consumes more energy, but almost all dissipated energy comes from internal friction energy of shear failure, causing a higher scale of rock damage. Before rockburst failure, elastic strain energy stored in rock remains basically unchanged, while the energy stored in testing machine continuously decreases, indicating that rockburst is triggered by energy release of loading system. Energy dissipation rate (EDR) can be used as a precursory index for rock failure induced by quasi-static loading such as delayed rockburst. High EDR means damage intensification, stress drop, active AE events, and acceleration of shear crack expansion inside the rock. The findings of this study can provide new perspectives for the mechanisms and early warning of rockbursts.

Abstract:To investigate the quantification of the extent of damage by considering the energy during rock failure, the pattern of energy dissipation and energy conversion, and the stress–energy mechanism for induced rock failure were analysed under cyclic loading/unloading. Based on damage mechanics, rock mechanics, and energy conservation theory, the test data were analysed. The results showed that the characteristics of hard rock compression are small deformation, high energy, and sudden failure; an elastic–plastic damage constitutive model and a stress–energy–rigidity–damage multi-criteria model for rock failure were established for hard rock. We compared the numerical curves and the experimental curves and found that they coincide. Rock failure is a combination of the results of elastic strain accumulation and dissipation by stress propagation. The key to inducing the energy storage capacity of rock before failure is closely related to the rock damage evolution. The pattern of energy release and dissipation through stress during rock failure was revealed from the perspective of energy using the constitutive model and multi-criteria model established for rock failure; these theoretical studies are very helpful in elucidating the mechanism of rock failure.

Abstract:T-shaped fractured rocks in the engineering rock mass with different inclination angles, quantities, and cross patterns will cause slope landslides, cavern collapse, roof fall, and other disasters under the action of external forces. Deformation evolution of the T-shaped fractured rock is also significant for monitoring the stability of rock engineering structures. In this paper, the compression test of T-shaped fracture specimens was carried out under different loading rates. By modulating both the fracture inclination angle and the loading rate, the attributes pertaining to energy dissipation in the T-shaped fractured specimen were scrupulously scrutinized and subsequently expounded upon. The difference in the energy characteristics between fractured rock and intact rock was investigated to understand the deformation evolution of T-shaped fractured rock samples. The results show that when the fracture angle is 45° and 90°, the elastic strain energy and dissipated energy decrease as the secondary fracture angle increases. At the peak point, as the secondary fracture angle increases from 0°, the total absorbed energy, elastic strain energy, and dissipated energy of the T-shaped fractured rock increase, the ratio Ue/U of elastic strain energy to total energy increases, and the ratio Ud/U of dissipated energy to total energy decreases. The increase in loading rate leads to an increase in Ue/U and a decrease in Ud/U at the peak point of the T-shaped fractured rock specimen. The increase in loading rate leads to an increase in the total absorbed energy and elastic energy at the peak point of the T-shaped fractured rock, while the dissipated energy decreases. Investigative endeavors into the mechanics and energetic attributes of T-shaped fractured rocks bestow pragmatic and directive significance upon the safety assessment and stability prognostication of sundry geological undertakings.

Abstract:In order to study the deformation and failure characteristics of rocks under different cyclic loading and unloading paths, three stress path tests were conducted, and acoustic emission (AE) monitoring was conducted simultaneously. The mechanical characteristics and AE characteristics under different stress paths were analyzed, and the influences of the different stress paths on the energy dissipation and deformation damage were investigated. The law of energy evolution considering viscoelasticity under different stress paths was obtained. The concept of ultimate damage energy and its calculation method was proposed. The results show that the "hardening effect" of sandstone and granite under the constant lower limit (CLLCL) is the most significant in maximizing the mechanical property. The CLLCL imparts a stronger elastic property to rocks than the variable lower limit (VLLCL) does, while the VLLCL causes more damage to rocks than the CLLCL. A significant linear relationship between the proportion of damage energy and the proportion of elastic energy was discovered. Based on this linear relationship, the ultimate damage energy can be calculated for sandstone and granite. The evolution of the damage variable based on damage energy was compatible with the real damage condition, which validates the ultimate damage energy calculation method. The research results lay a theoretical foundation for the design and construction of geotechnical engineering.

Abstract:The original rock taken from underground powerhouses of Shuangjiangkou Hydropower Station in south-west China was employed to prepare granite samples containing fractures with different dip angles, widths, and lengths. On this basis, the failure process of rock samples with different shapes of fractures under triaxial loading was investigated; furthermore, the mechanical properties, failure mode, and energy transfer of fractured granite under triaxial loading were revealed. The results showed that a significant post-peak stress drop occurs, and the stress then slowly decreases in the form of repeated drops and increases under triaxial compression. The larger the fracture width, the greater the stress drop; with increasing fracture length, the peak stress decreases and the stress varies from slow, fluctuating reduction to abrupt reduction in the post-peak stage. The failure angle of fractured granite grows with the increase of the confining pressure; as the fracture length increases, X-shaped shear failure mode is gradually prominent and the pre-fabricated fractures more significantly dominate the failure mode; at the dip angle within 0 to 60°, the samples are mainly subjected to X-shaped shear failure. The energy storage limit of fractured granite linearly increases with the increase of the confining pressure while linearly decreases with the increase of the fracture length, and it first decreases, and then increases with increasing fracture dip angle.

Abstract:Dynamic failure widely exists in rock engineering, such as excavation, blasting, and rockburst. However, the quantitative measurement of the dynamic damage process using experimental methods remains a challenge. In this study, a SHPB modeling technique is established based on Voronoi-based DDA to study the damage evolution of Fangshan granite under dynamic loading. The assessment of cracking along the artificial joints among Voronoi sub-blocks is conducted using the modified contact constitutive law. A calibration procedure has been implemented to investigate the rock dynamic properties quantitatively. The dispersion and damping effect can be effectively eliminated by regular discretization in SHPB bars, based on which the dynamic stress equilibrium can be satisfied. To reproduce the loading rate effect of the dynamic compressive strength, which has been observed in the experiment, a modification strategy considering the influence of the rate effect on the strength meso-parameters is proposed. Using this strategy, the peak stresses of the transmitted waves predicted by DDA match well with those obtained from experiments conducted at different loading rates. The simulation results show that more microcracks are generated and the proportion of tensile cracks decreases as the loading rate increases. Furthermore, the dynamic mechanical behavior and fracturing process have also been discussed and compared with the experiments. The results show that the established SHPB system is a powerful tool for quantitative analysis of rock dynamics problems and can handle more complex problems in the future.

Abstract:Drill and blast tunneling is a cyclic construction process in which the rock away from the blast hole is subjected to cyclic blast load that can influence the dynamic behaviour, energy characteristics and damage evolution of the rock. To study the dynamic mechanical properties and energy evolution of granite under cyclic impact loading, dynamic tests were performed on 100-mm-diameter granite samples at different impact velocities using a split Hopkinson pressure bar system. The stress–strain relationship, energy and damage evolution, and microscopic features of the rock are discussed and analyzed in detail. The results show that the stress–strain relationship of the granite is significantly sensitive to both impact velocity and number of impacts. At the same impact velocity, the peak dynamic stress decreases and the peak strain increases linearly with the increase in the number of impacts, while the peak stress decreases significantly and visible cracks appear or the sample is completely destroyed. Energy evolutions of granite samples during the cyclic impact process with different impact velocities present a uniform variation tendency, and the impact compressive process of granite samples can be divided into three stages: linear elastic deformation stage, plastic deformation-dominant stage and rock failure stage. The cumulative energy dissipation rate, defined as the sum of the ratio of total dissipated energy to the input strain energy after each impact loading, is proposed, and it increases linearly with the number of impacts. In addition, the damage evolution and microscopic features of the rock after cyclic impact loading are also discussed, and the microscopic fracture mode changes from the combination of intergranular and transgranular fracture to transgranular fracture with the increase of impact velocity.

Abstract:Investigation of the damage characteristics of rock material under the combined effect of cyclic load and impact load is extremely crucial for many mining engineering applications. Based on energy dissipation theory, we considered factors such as circulation times, the cyclic stress of a uniaxial cyclic load test, and the impact pressure (strain rate) of a split Hopkinson pressure bar (SHPB) test, studying the damage mechanism of red sandstone under the combined action of a uniaxial cyclic and impact loads. We found that when the load stress is 60%, 70%, and 80% of the uniaxial compressive strength (UCS) of red sandstone, the stress can still promote the development of microcracks and the generation of new cracks in the rock, increasing the inner damage of the rock so that it reduces the rock strength. As the cyclic time increases, the energy dissipation ratio presented a trend of decreasing dramatically and then maintaining basically no change, and the peak strain and the damage variable of the rock both increased first and then tended to remain relatively constant. The damage variable of the rock specimen under the combined action of the uniaxial cyclic loading and impact load had a significant corresponding relationship with the initial damage. As the rock specimen initial damage increases, the damage variable and the peak stress of the rock specimen both decreases almost linearly with initial damage. Meanwhile, the average particle diameter of the rock specimen after breakage gradually increased, showing a positively correlated tendency. The ratio between the fragment quality of the bigger particle diameter in the total rock specimen quality gradually increased. Under the conditions of the same initial damage, a higher impact pressure resulted in smaller rock fragment average particle diameters.

Abstract:Ultrasonic vibration-assisted rock breaking is a potentially effective technique to accelerate hard rock drilling processes. Fatigue damage is a primary factor that governs rock fragmentation subject to ultrasonic vibration, and when such damage accumulates to a critical level via crack initiation and propagation, macro-damage (e.g., macro-cracks) will occur. To date, however, the specific fatigue damage mechanism of hard rock materials under high-frequency and low-amplitude cyclic loading conditions is still unclear. In the present study, we applied a 2D digital image correlation (2D-DIC) method to measure the full-field strain in granite samples with different loading amplitudes. From these deformation data, the threshold value for rock fragmentation under ultrasonic vibration was obtained, and it was also found that the logarithm of the time required to meet this value decreases linearly with an increasing amplitude coefficient. Then, we conducted numerical simulation based on a 2D particle flow code (PFC2D) to reproduce the crack initiation and propagation processes and explore their mechanisms. The results from the simulation show that due to irreversible sliding under ultrasonic vibration, the difference in the displacement between particles on either side of a crack tip will increase, which leads to an increase in the concentrated lateral tensile stress. When the tensile stress exceeds the strength limit, the crack will initiate and propagate, resulting in fragmentation of rocks.

Abstract:Rock dynamic fracture is usually accompanied by numerous energy loss, to reveal energy evolution laws during rock dynamic fracture, the single cleavage triangle (SCT) specimens made by two types of sandstone are implemented to conduct dynamic fracture tests by using the split Hopkinson pressure bar (SHPB) device. The dynamic stress distribution law and the energy evolution law can be obtained according to the strain history of cracked rock mass subjected to impact loads. Crack propagation gauges (CPG) were applied to measure crack propagation speed, dynamic stress intensity factor (DSIF) and dynamic energy release rate can be determined by using an experimental–numerical method with the help of the software COSMOL. The experimental results show a physical pseudo-healing of the crack due to the short closure of the crack after its arrest under impact loads. The crack propagation speed and the DSIF show a certain oscillatory with the increase of crack length, the DSIFs at crack initiation are 0.2 ∼ 0.8 of the maximum value. The history of dissipated energy has a slow decrease after they reach a peak during 300 μs ∼ 350 μs, whose curves after the peak contain two stages: stage I is that the absorbed energy of the SCT specimen is mainly transformed into the transmitted energy; stage II is that it will be reflected energy. The input energy overtakes the consumed energy by new crack formation to drive the crack propagation and the test results of sandstone specimens show that 2.11 ‰ to 4.44 ‰ dissipated energy is implemented to drive crack propagation. The energy and stress are released more significantly around the crack tip before the crack arrest.

Abstract:Energy is often dissipated and released in the process of rock deformation and failure. To study the energy evolution of rock discontinuities under cyclic loading and unloading, cement mortar was used as rock material and a CSS-1950 rock biaxial rheological testing machine was used to conduct graded cyclic loading and unloading tests on Barton’s standard profile line discontinuities with different joint roughness coefficients (JRCs). According to the deformation characteristics of the rock discontinuity sample, the change of internal energy is calculated and analyzed. The experimental results show that under the same cyclic stress, the samples harden with the increase in the number of cycles. With the increase of cyclic stress, the dissipated energy density of each stage gradually exceeds the elastic energy density and occupies a dominant position and increases rapidly as failure becomes imminent. In the process of increasing the shear stress step-by-step, the elastic energy ratio shows a downward trend, but the dissipated energy is contrary to it. The energy dissipation ratio can be used to characterize the internal damage of the sample under load. In the initial stage of fractional loading, the sample is in the extrusion compaction stage, and the energy dissipation ratio remains quasi-constant; then the fracture develops steadily, the damage inside the sample intensifies, and the energy dissipation ratio increases linearly (albeit at a low rate). When the energy storage limit is reached, the growth rate of energy dissipation ratio increases and changes when the stress level reaches a certain threshold. The increase of the roughness of rock discontinuity samples will improve their energy storage capacity to a certain extent.
