Abstract:A new method using cemented lenses to improve the design of Panoramic Annular Lens (PAL) is introduced. This structure can help to realize the design of PAL optical system with long focal length, which can help to see much further than the ones with short focal lengths. It can also keep the volume of the system moderate. The chromatic aberration of PAL is investigated theoretically. Method of selecting proper cemented glasses of PAL is also discussed. A doublet PAL and its relay optics with a total effective focal length of 10.3mm are realized.

Abstract:A novel doublet liquid variable-focus lens with simple structure was designed and fabricated for spherical aberration correction under the condition of small focal length, which was 11.8 mm to 25 mm. By changing the shape of the two PDMS membranes respectively, the focal length of the proposed lens was changed and the spherical aberration was corrected. The size of the entire lens was very small and overall structure of the proposed lens was presented, as well as the design process. The ZEMAX software was used to optimize the optical parameters of the proposed lens. The deformation of the PDMS membranes was measured and fitted by spherical curve. The longitudinal spherical aberration was measured in experiments and compared with the optimal design results. In order to weaken the gravity effect, we designed the shape of the rear PDMS membrane and presented the detailed description of the fabrication process. (C) 2016 Elsevier GmbH. All rights reserved.
A New Way Of Fabricating Spectacle Lens Using Binary Diffraction Optics Technology

Abstract:Different from a conventional spectacle lens which consists of two spherical or aspheric surfaces, this kind of spectacle lens consists of one plane surface and a binary diffraction surface, which significantly reduces their thickness and weight. A theoretical design method was developed and a diffraction efficiency formula was established for the binary surface. A binary spectacle lens with a four discrete phase-step binary surface was fabricated using lithography and RIBE (reaction iron beam etching) technology. Experimental results indicate that the spectacle lens fabricated in this way can achieve the same diopters as a conventional spectacle lens, and it can be made much thinner although the spectacle lens has large chromatic variations and low diffraction efficiency problems. Refractive/diffractive hybrid optical design or harmony diffraction can be used to reduce the chromatic variations, and more binary phase steps can be used to increase the diffraction efficiency.

Abstract:In this paper, an off-axis reflective projection lens with single Fresnel reflective surface and three aspheric surfaces were designed. The design method of reflective lens using spherical Fresnel surface is discussed. The MTF (Modulation Transfer Function) of the off-axis reflective lens, with optical magnification 100×, F-number 2.5 and field of view 120°, is over 40% at 0.6lp/mm on the image side, the distortion is less than 2%. This design method can provide reference for application of Fresnel surface in wide field of view imaging, and possesses a bright future with the continuous development of fabrication technique.

Abstract:The wide-angle lens is widely used with the advantage of a large field of view, but it is difficult to solve the problem of large distortion. Therefore, the research on how to design a wide-angle low-distortion lens with excellent imaging quality is very meaningful. In this paper, we propose a high-performance wide-angle small distortion optical system, which has a horizontal field angle of 110 degrees and a vertical field angle of 77 degrees, focal length of 2.03mm, f number of 1.65, and a total length of 16.5mm. By introducing a non-rotational symmetric freeform surface into the last side of the wide-angle optical system and combining with several even aspheric surfaces, the f-tan(theta) distortion in the X direction is controlled to -6%similar to+1%, and the f-tan(theta) distortion in the Y direction is controlled to less than 1%. At the same time, the MTF of the system is greater than 0.35 at 125lp/mm, so that the circular image plane can better adapt to the rectangular sensor. In addition, due to the introduction of the freeform surface in the system, the change of system structure with temperature becomes more complex. We carry out thermal analysis for this surface and calculate the change of structure with temperature. Finally, we completed the athermalized design of the lens, so that the wide-angle lens can work in the range of -40 degrees C similar to+80 degrees C. This optical system has great development potential in security monitoring, UAV detection and other fields that may encounter extreme environments.

Abstract:This paper presents a distortion correction method for designing a wide field of view (FOV) lens for an imaging system. The lens is composed of two aspheric surfaces and several spheres. In the preliminary design, profiles of the aspheric surfaces can be obtained according to aplanatism, refraction law, and polynomial fitting methods, where the numeric computation, the differential geometry computation, and the polynomial fitting algorithm are stated in detail. Then the lens is optimized by the damped least squares method. Theoretically, this method cannot eliminate aberrations absolutely but can balance some kinds of aberrations to the image well. Furthermore, a projector lens with a wide FOV, low distortion, and low throw ratio [TR = (projection distance)/(image diagonal size)] is designed successfully by this method.

Abstract:Much attention has been paid to the optical design of a birefringent lens and analysis of its polarization aberration due to its essential application in bifocal interferometric microscopes. To investigate a practical way of designing a birefringent lens with large separation between the two foci, a novel concept named 'pseudo-chromatic aberration' is proposed, which results from the difference of refractive indices between the ordinary and extraordinary rays when they pass through the birefringent lens. As the concept is similar to normal chromatic aberration, the existing primary aberration theory to design a thin cemented lens can also be adopted on the design of a birefringent lens. A table of primary structure of cemented doublet birefringent lenses is consequently obtained. Different combinations of three kinds of birefringent crystals and optical glasses can satisfy various requirements. A concrete example of a birefringent lens with the compactness factor gamma of 0.25 is given using the glass of SF2 and calcite.

Abstract:Here we study aspheric phase pattern geometric-phase lenses through the design of doublet lenses in Zemax Optic Studio and in MATLAB using a simple ray tracing code. The solutions developed use variable spacer distances and are solved monochromatically (at 633 nm) and polychromatically (at 450, 532, and 633 nm). After selecting a Zemax generated polychromatically optimized doublet solution, we fabricated the lens utilizing liquid crystal films and direct writing. We characterized the liquid crystal alignment quality, efficiencies, and spot performance of this lens in comparison to a standard spherical singlet of the same back focal length and diameter (24.5 mm diameter and 40 mm back focal length at 633 nm). With this aspheric lens profile, we realize the development of novel focusing phase surfaces.

Realization of a Cost-Effective 3D-Printed Lens for Aberration Correction for Visible Spectrum Imaging

Abstract:Achromats represent a widely employed optical component in optical design and engineering. Traditionally, an achromat consists of a pairing of two lenses: a positively refracting crown glass element and a negatively refracting flint glass element, which are cascaded together. The Cooke triplet comprises three distinct lenses arranged at a finite separation distance to control the aberrations. However, the glass materials employed in their construction are costly and necessitate access to a specialized fabrication facility for shaping their structure for custom design. In this study, we demonstrate the feasibility of removing aberrations using cheap, single material like transparent epoxy resin, exhibiting a refractive index of 1.55. We fabricated 3D molds for the lenses and subsequently filled them with resin, producing lenses. These lenses' straightforward and cost-effective production demonstrates that custom designs can be created without requiring specialized fabrication facilities. The lens design started with the lens maker equation and was further optimized in the ray tracing software Opticstudio Zemax. The Seidel diagrams and focal shift graphs provided empirical evidence of our successful aberration reduction, highlighting that we effectively mitigated up to 74% of aberrations. At the same time, complete elimination of aberrations through using a single material is unattainable. The production of these lenses will contribute to the realization of cost-effective imaging systems, lens assemblies, and 3D-printed camera setups.

Abstract:A bionic variable-focus lens with symmetrical layered structure was designed to mimic the crystalline lens. An optical imaging system based on this lens and with a symmetrical structure that mimics the human eye structure was proposed. The refractive index of the bionic variable-focus lens increases from outside to inside. The two PDMS lenses with a certain thickness were designed to improve the optical performance of the optical imaging system and minimise the gravity effect of liquid. The paper presents the overall structure of the optical imaging system and the detailed description of the bionic variable-focus lens. By pumping liquid in or out of the cavity, the surface curvatures of the rear PDMS lens were varied, resulting in a change in the focal length. The focal length range of the optical imaging system was 20.71–24.87mm. The optical performance of the optical imaging system was evaluated by imaging experiments and analysed by ray tracing simulations. On the basis of test and simulation results, the optical performance of the system was quite satisfactory. Off-axis aberrations were well corrected, and the image quality was greatly improved.

Abstract:A new method to improve the design of the panoramic annular lens (PAL) optical system with long focus is introduced. Cemented lenses are used in a PAL block to improve the design freedom. A multilayer diffractive optical element (MDOE) is used in relay optics to simplify the structure of the system and to increase diffractive efficiency of the design spectral range. The diffractive efficiency of MDOE in a wide spectral range is investigated theoretically. A seven piece PAL system with a total effective focal length of 10.8 mm is realized, and the diffractive efficiency of the whole design wavelength is above 99.3%. A PAL system with all spherical surfaces is described as a comparison.

Abstract:We present a simple method to evaluate the curved surface of a plano–convex aspheric lens using an incoherent light source. We implement an exact ray trace to obtain analytical expressions for designing a set of geometric objects, placed within a plane, to produce by refraction a regular array of either circles or straight lines in the plane of detection when the optical system under test works in accordance with the nominal design. An innovative geometrical test is implemented to calibrate the position of each element involved in the measurement system. As part of the calibration process, we considered that the camera lens can be affected by the distortion aberration; therefore, we proposed a straightforward method to compensate for the defects introduced in the experimental images. Finally, we used the measured values of the slopes to recover the shape of the surface under test using an iterative algorithm; as a result, we obtained the geometric parameters describing the surface with a percentage error less than 1.7%.

Abstract:Existing methods of correcting for chromatic aberrations in optical systems are limited to two approaches: varying the material dispersion in refractive lenses or incorporating grating dispersion via diffractive optical elements. Recently, single-layer broadband achromatic metasurface lenses have been demonstrated but are limited to diameters on the order of 100 μm due to the large required group delays. Here, we circumvent this limitation and design a metacorrector by combining a tunable phase and artificial dispersion to correct spherical and chromatic aberrations in a large spherical plano-convex lens. The tunability results from a variation in light confinement in sub-wavelength waveguides by locally tailoring the effective refractive index. The effectiveness of this approach is further validated by designing a metacorrector, which greatly increases the bandwidth of a state-of-the-art immersion objective (composed of 14 lenses and 7 types of glasses) from violet to near-infrared wavelengths. This concept of hybrid metasurface-refractive optics combines the advantages of both technologies in terms of size, scalability, complexity, and functionality.

Computational inverse design for ultra-compact single-piece metalenses free of chromatic and angular aberration

Abstract:We present full-Maxwell topology-optimization design of a single-piece multlayer metalens, about 10 wavelengths~$\lambda$ in thickness, that simultaneously focuses over a $60^\circ$ angular range and a 23\% spectral bandwidth without suffering chromatic or angular aberration, a "plan-achromat." At all angles and frequencies it achieves diffraction-limited focusing (Strehl ratio $> 0.8$) and absolute focusing efficiency $> 50$\%. Both 2D and 3D axi-symmetric designs are presented, optimized over $\sim 10^5$ degrees of freedom. We also demonstrate shortening the lens-to-sensor distance while producing the same image as for a longer "virtual" focal length and maintaining plan-achromaticity. These proof-of-concept designs demonstrate the ultra-compact multi-functionality that can be achieved by exploiting the full wave physics of subwavelength designs, and motivate future work on design and fabrication of multi-layer meta-optics.

Advanced Linear Axial Wavelength Spreading through Cascaded Double Hyperchromats

Abstract:This study explores the design and optimization of cascaded double-hyperchromatic optical systems (i.e., 2×2 lenses), focusing on achieving an extremely linear axial spectral decomposition characterized by an exceptionally low equivalent Abbe number. The investigation involves two double hyperchromats, considering both purely refractive systems and hybrid configurations that combine refractive and diffractive elements. For purely refractive systems, alternating focal length signs of divergent and collective lenses are crucial to achieve significant axial chromatic dispersion. In hybrid systems, the position of the diffractive optical element (DOE) and the selection of focal lengths play key roles in obtaining extremely low equivalent Abbe numbers. The optimized systems demonstrate absolute equivalent Abbe numbers of 0.983 for purely refractive and 0.65 for hybrid systems—more than four times lower than the absolute Abbe number of a single diffractive element. Notably, even systems using standard materials exhibit significantly low equivalent Abbe numbers of 2.5 and 1.4 for pure refractive and hybrid configurations, respectively. These results offer promising opportunities for improving optical applications based on axial spectral decomposition, overcoming previous limitations of axial chromatic spreading.

Aberration Analysis and Adjustment of Non-Spherical Lens in the Linear Ccds Three-Dimensional Measurement System

Abstract:Linear CCDs three-dimensional measurement system is constituted with three one dimensional imaging units (ODIUs) composed of charge-couple device (CCD) linear image sensor paired with equivalent cylindrical lens cells. The cylindrical lens is needed for optical transformation from object point to its realistic image line in the ODIU, and the imaging quality of equivalent cylindrical lens (width and distortion aberration of the image line) directly affected the reconstruction precision of three dimension coordinates. At present, the methods of how to design an equivalent cylindrical lens with both high precision and wide field of view were not reported in literatures. An improved Double Gauss structured lenses by replacing the first spherical lens in the traditional Double Gauss lenses with a cylindrical lens is introduced to realize the point to line optical transformation and aberration adjustment. The coma aberration and distortion can be automatically adjusted due to the structure symmetry of composite lenses, and the spherical aberration, astigmatism and curvature of field can also be largely adjusted by appropriately selecting material, luminous flux, curvature, thickness, and distance of lenses. Under the computer simulating by Zemax (an optical systems design software), the composite cylindrical lens was designed and fabricated. Finally, the three-dimensional positioning system made up of above-mentioned composite cylindrical lens and corresponding circuits is constructed, and the direct linear transformation (DLT) is adopted to three dimension coordinated reconstruction. The result of reconstruction error of X, Y, Z axis with in the view field of 700*760*500 mm. less than 1mm are obtained.

Abstract:It has been established that of all types of aberrations following the implantation of intraocular lenses, the most significant is spherical, inherent in the spherical optics in various aspects. This paper proposes a method for reducing the longitudinal spherical aberration of intraocular lenses by applying an additional optical layer onto their surface. To reduce spherical aberration, the thickness of a layer of polytetrafluoroethylene (Teflon) was simulated in the programming environment Zemax 13 (USA). Calculations that were performed included refractive indices of the environment and the material of the optics. It was established that in order to reduce the value of the longitudinal spherical aberration of an intraocular lens made of hydrophobic acrylic, the thickness of aTeflon layer should be about 100 nm. The results of spraying indicate an improvement in the optical characteristics of the lens by reducing longitudinal spherical aberration. When examining different areas of lenses with spraying, it was established that there is no spherical aberration in the lens area. In the 4 mm zone, the spherical aberration indicator decreased by 4 times compared to the original lens. In the region with a diameter of 6 mm, spherical aberration decreased by 0.2. Applying a layer of Teflon reduced Fresnel reflection by 4 times, which improves the sensitivity and contrast of vision. The hydrophobic properties of Teflon provide the anti-adhesive state of the lens, which is a counteraction to the development of secondary cataracts. Abstract:This paper proposes the automatic lens-splitting optimization algorithm to correct spherical aberration by the interaction between ZEMAX and MATLAB. This method tackled the problem that classic optimization cannot add the elements automatically. A high numerical aperture collimator is considered for the test sample, and the selection of four thickness constraints (minimum center and edge of glass and air thickness constraints) is discussed. To determine the feasibility and applicability of this method, more design systems (a retro-focus objective system and a telesystem) are tested. The simulated results under the feasible thickness constraints show that the automatic lens-splitting optimization algorithm generates reasonable and realizable solutions.
Large-scale achromatic flat lens by light coherence optimization

Abstract:Abstract Flat lenses, including metalens and diffractive lens, have attracted increasing attention due to their ability to miniaturize the imaging devices. However, realizing a large scale achromatic flat lens with high performance still remains a big challenge. Here, we developed a new framework in designing achromatic multi-level diffractive lenses by light coherence optimization, which enables the implementation of large-scale flat lenses under non-ideal conditions. As results, a series achromatic polymer lenses with diameter from 1 to 10 mm are successfully designed and fabricated. The subsequent optical characterizations substantially validate our theoretical framework and show relatively good performance of the centimeter-scale achromatic multi-level diffractive lenses with a super broad bandwidth in optical wavelengths (400-1100 nm). After comparing with conventional refractive lens, this achromatic lens shows significant advantages in white-light imaging performance, implying a new strategy in developing practical planar optical devices.
