Abstract:This research presents a new class of versatile multi‐material hybrid actuators (MASH actuators), powered by pneumatics and electrostatic adhesion (EA)‐based adaptive strain‐limiting layers. Soft pneumatic actuators with strain‐limiting layers as the mainstream actuation for soft robotics have been developed for decades. However, due to their permanent strain‐limiting layers, those actuators possess fewer motion patterns. Inspired by the longitudinal muscles of the earthworm, a concept of an adaptive strain‐limiting layer with the ability to vary its length, stiffness, and position is presented. By integrating two flexible EA brakes into a soft pneumatic actuator as adaptive strain‐limiting layers, the actuator can achieve multiple motion patterns including extension, contraction, and bilateral bending, with permutations among these motions. The EA‐based strain‐limiting layer can increase the original actuator length by up to 86%, and the baseline actuator stiffness by up to 605%. To demonstrate its potential in locomotion and manipulation, an earthworm‐inspired crawling robot possessing great terrain adaptability and a versatile soft robotic gripper based on this hybrid actuator concept are developed.

Abstract:Compared with rigid robots, soft robots have the advantages of strong environmental adaptability, good human-robot interaction, and simple control systems; therefore, soft actuators have been widely studied in recent years. Based on DLP 3D printing technology, this study makes three kinds of pneumatic soft actuators: the soft gripper with the auxetic structure, the Elongation Bellow Actuator (EBA) and the Omnidirectional Bending Bellow Actuator (OBBA). Through experimental testing and finite element simulation, it was found that these actuators have the characteristics of fast response, high stability and large driving force. In this paper, an out-pipe crawling soft robot and soft robotic arm using these three soft actuators are designed. The pipe robot can realize omnidirectional turning and adapt to different shapes and sizes of pipes, with a movement speed of 2.85 mm/s (0.016 body length/s) on the 44 mm diameter round cross-section pipe and 2.67 mm/s (0.015 body length/s) on the 30 mm mm square cross-section pipe. At the same time, an innovative motion mode is designed for the pipe robot in an underwater environment, which provides new ideas for underwater pipe soft robots. And the soft robotic arm can achieve omnidirectional bending and a specific range of grasping work, and compared with the rigid body robot arm, it is small in size, low in mass and has a higher degree of freedom. Finally, by combining the robotic arm and pipe robot, this paper proposes a pipe soft robot collaboration system and simulates its function in industrial pipeline systems, which has good application prospects.

Abstract:This paper focuses on the design and modeling of a hydraulic soft actuator which can perform space motion with multiple degrees of freedom (DOF). The cylinder soft actuator made of elastomer has three fiber-reinforced hydraulic chambers distributed symmetrically. By controlling the pressure vector in the chambers, the motion of the soft actuator can be expressed by three independent variables including axial elongation, bending angle, and azimuth angle. This paper firstly presents the actuation principle, structural design, and fabrication method of the soft actuator. Secondly, the relationship between the input pressure and the axial length of the chamber is derived by taking the nonlinear deformation behavior of the elastomer into account, which is seldom considered in the state of the art. Thirdly, the kinematics of the soft actuator is modeled to predict the coordinates of its tip position with the piecewise constant-curvature (PCC) assumption. Finally, an experimental platform is set up and a series of experiments are implemented to identify some parameters which are difficult to be quantified analytically as well as to validate the developed model. The results show that the measured data are in good accordance with the predicted data. In addition, a model-based open-loop control experiment is carried out to realize the path following.

Abstract:Soft robots have the characteristics of high flexibility and strong environmental adaptability compared with traditional robots, and the peristaltic soft robot is a critical class for this field because of the peristaltic creature's superior softness, various movement, and can through complex space. However, this soft robot has the problem of single motion or limited deformation ability at present. In this paper, a pneumatic corrugated structure driver with a multi-chamber was designed to squirmy soft robots, it can elongation, contraction and turning. We designed the actuator's structure and fabrication of the model. Simultaneously, a set of controller systems is built to control its deformation, we complete the action of forwarding and turning with the actuator on experiments.
Bioinspired 3D Printable Soft Vacuum Actuators for Locomotion Robots, Grippers and Artificial Muscles

Abstract:Continued technological progress in robotic systems has led to more applications where robots and humans operate in close proximity and even physical contact in some cases. Soft robots, which are made of highly compliant and deformable materials, provide inherent safety features unlike conventional robots that are made of stiff and rigid components. Soft robotics is a rapidly developing field exploiting biomimetic design principles, novel sensor and actuation concepts, and advanced manufacturing techniques. In this study, we propose novel 3D printable soft vacuum actuators that are inspired by the sporangium of fern trees. These actuators that are directly manufactured using commercial and affordable fused deposition modeling 3D printers offer many advantages such as high actuation speed (5.54 Hz), long lifetime (123,000 cycles), large payload to weight ratio (∼26), and significant output forces (∼16 N). The behavior of these actuators is accurately predicted, and their performance is optimized using finite element modeling. Furthermore, diverse robotic applications such as locomotion robots (a walking robot moving with an average forward speed of vf = 3.54 cm/s, and a hopping robot called Gongaroo hopping with an average speed of vf = 3.75 cm/s), grippers, and artificial muscles have been established and activated using the new soft actuation concept. Finally, to demonstrate the modularity of the proposed actuation concept, soft actuators with multiple degrees of freedom and variable length are established using a series of 3D printable vacuum hinges.

Abstract:Abstract Soft linear actuators have strong deformation ability and good environmental adaptability, which have been widely used in soft robot design. However, little work has focused on designing soft linear actuators with balanced performances, featuring fast driving speed, large output displacement, being lightweight, and miniaturization. Herein, we present a novel soft linear actuator design based on the Kresling origami structure. By driving the Kresling tubes with a servo motor, the soft linear actuator has good compliance and strong environmental adaptability and can achieve a driving speed, large driving force, and high control precision comparable to the traditional electrical motor. The analytical models of the Kresling tubes and the whole actuator are respectively derived to analyze the mechanical properties, determine the optimal geometry of the Kresling tube, and evaluate the driving performance of the whole actuator. The actuator prototype is fabricated by 3D printing, and the actual driving performance is tested. It is shown that the prototype can achieve a maximum output displacement of 18.9 mm without payload or 16 mm under a payload of 30 N. Finally, as a case study, the soft linear actuator is applied to a crawling robot, where the maximum moving speed of 28 mm/s is reached.

3D Printed Proprioceptive Soft Fluidic Actuators with Graded Porosity

Abstract:Integration of both actuation and proprioception into the robot body would provide actuation and sensing in a single integrated system. Within this work, a manufacturing approach for such actuators is investigated that relies on 3D printing for fabricating soft-graded porous actuators with piezoresistive sensing and identified models for strain estimation. By 3D printing, a graded porous structure consisting of a conductive thermoplastic elastomer both mechanical programming for actuation and piezoresistive sensing were realized. Whereas identified Wiener-Hammerstein (WH) models estimate the strain by compensating the nonlinear hysteresis of the sensorized actuator. Three actuator types were investigated, namely: a bending actuator, a contractor, and a three DoF bending segment (3DoF). The porosity of the contractors was shown to enable the tailoring of both the stroke and resistance change. Furthermore, the WH models could provide strain estimation with on average high fits (83%) and low RMS errors (6%) for all three actuators, which outperformed linear models significantly (76.2/9.4% fit/RMS error). These results indicate that an integrated manufacturing approach with both 3D printed graded porous structures and system identification can realize sensorized actuators that can be tailored through porosity for both actuation and sensing behavior but also compensate for the nonlinear hysteresis.

Abstract:In recent years, increasing attention and expanding research have been devoted to the study and application of soft actuators. Inherent compliance equips soft actuators with such advantages as incomparable flexibility, good environmental adaptability, safe interaction with the environment, etc. However, the highly nonlinear also bring challenges to modeling of dynamics. This study aims to explore the dynamical characteristics of an underwater hydraulic soft actuator. The actuator has three fiber-reinforced elastomer chambers distributed symmetrically inside. By controlling the pressure in the chambers through a hydraulic power system, the actuator can achieve spatial motion with three degrees of freedom. To describe the relationship between the input pressure combination and the actuator movement, a dynamic model considering the nonlinearity of viscoelastic material is developed based on Lagrangian method and constant curvature hypothesis. A series of experiments are carried out, including single-chamber actuation and multi-chamber actuation. The test results verify the effectiveness and precision of the model. Finally, the effects of the geometrical features on dynamic response are investigated through model-based simulation, which can provide guidance to parameter optimization. The proposed dynamic model can also contribute to behavior analysis, performance prediction, and motion control of the hydraulic soft actuator.

Because of their recent emergence, there exist numerous uncharted territories, including novel actuators, manufacturing processes, and advanced control methods. This research is centred on the design, fabrication, and control of a pneumatic soft robot. The principal objective is to develop a modular soft robot featuring multiple segments, each one with three degrees of freedom. This yields a tubular structure with five independent degrees of freedom, enabling motion across three spatial dimensions. Physical construction leverages tin-cured silicone and a wax-casting method, refined through an iterative processes. PLA moulds that are 3D-printed and filled with silicone yield the desired model, while bladder-like structures are formed within using solidified paraffin wax-positive moulds. For control, an empirically fine-tuned open-loop system is adopted. This paper culminates in rigorous testing. Finally, the bending ability, weight-carrying capacity, and possible applications are discussed.

Abstract:This paper presents design, fabrication and control of a compliant 2D manipulator, a so called soft actuator. Our focus is on fiber-reinforced elastomer actuators driven by a constant pressure hydraulic supply and modulated on/off valves. For a given diameters, we study the effect of four different elastomer materials and that of number of reinforcement fiber turns on forces generated by the actuator and maximum bending angles. For the rest of the study, we use polydimethylosiloxane (PDMS) with 240 fiber turns per 170mm length of actuator which withstand highest pressures and forces in our experiments. For the rest of the paper, we introduce two control methodologies. Firstly, we show that is possible to reasonably accurately control the pressure inside tube without measuring the pressure incorporating a simple linear tube model. This can be used, for example, in an inner-outer loop configuration with a PI position control to achieve high performance without the need for pressure measurement. Secondly, we experimentally show that a switching position control exhibits very good steady state accuracy and acceptable transient. Actuator tip position is measured using an external vision system. Our experiments included performance analysis of our soft manipulator while freely moving as well as when carrying a load.

Abstract:Despite an emerging interest in soft and rigid pneumatic lightweight robots, the pneumatic rotary actuators available to date either are unsuitable for servo pneumatic applications or provide a limited angular range. This study describes the functional principle, design, and manufacturing of a servo pneumatic rotary actuator that is suitable for continuous rotary motion and positioning. It contains nine radially arranged linear bellows actuators with rollers that push forward a cam profile. Proportional valves and a rotary encoder are used to control the bellows pressures in relation to the rotation angle. Introducing freely programmable servo pneumatic commutation increases versatility and allows the number of mechanical components to be reduced in comparison to state-of-the-art designs. The actuator presented is designed to be manufacturable using a combination of standard components, selective laser sintering, elastomer molding with novel multi-part cores and basic tools. Having a diameter of 110 mm and a width of 41 mm, our prototype weighs less than 500 g, produces a torque of 0.53 Nm at 1 bar pressure and a static positioning accuracy of 0.31° with no limit of angular motion. By providing a description of design, basic kinematic equations, manufacturing techniques, and a proof of concept, we enable the reader to envision and explore future applications.

A two-front leach model for cement-stabilized heavy metal waste.

Abstract:Quantitative scanning electron microscope (SEM) studies of cement-stabilized waste specimens exposed to a leaching solution at constant pH in the range 4-7 have shown that the acid neutralization capacity (ANC) of the waste matrix is consumed at two consecutive leaching fronts. The first front is associated with the dissolution of portlandite (Ca(OH)2) and the partial reaction of calcium silicate hydrate (CSH) gel. The second front marks the dissolution of Ca-Al hydroxy sulfate minerals. The advancement of the first front is limited by the diffusion of OH- ions from the first front toward the leaching solution. The advancement of the second front, however, is controlled by the diffusion of H+ ions from the leaching solution toward the second front. Leaching of copper, zinc, and lead only occurs between the second front and the specimen surface. The leaching behavior of metals is modeled by considering that metals are leached from the waste matrix as a result of the advancement of the second front. The proposed model takes into account the leachable metal fraction in the waste matrix and the effect of metal remineralization on metal mobility.

Abstract:Compared to rigid-structure robots, soft robots possess higher degrees of freedom and stronger environmental adaptability, which has aroused increasing attention in the robotic field. Among them, soft pneumatic robots have excellent performances in various practical applications. However, the nonlinearity and instability of pressure response of soft actuators caused by lateral expansion come to a great challenge. To address this problem, we proposed to embed a spring constraint layer around each single air chamber. Following the design concept, we obtained single-cavity and multi-DoF pneumatic actuators and evaluated their elongation and bending characteristics. Experimental results demonstrated that our proposed actuators have more linear pressure response as well as higher consistency. Eventually, through robotic applications, including soft robotic hand, gripper, and manipulator for minimally invasive surgery (MIS), our proposed actuators could facilitate flexible manipulation and elaborate performance.

Abstract:With the ongoing advancements in material technology, the domain of soft robotics has garnered increasing attention. Soft robots, in contrast to their rigid counterparts, offer superior adaptability to the environment, enhanced flexibility, and improved safety, rendering them highly suitable for complex application scenarios such as rescue operations and medical interventions. In this paper, a new type of pneumatic software actuator is proposed. The actuator adopts a combination of a soft structure and pneumatic control, which is highly flexible and versatile. By using the flow of gas inside the soft structure, high-precision and flexible motion control is realized. In the design process, the extensibility and adaptability of the structure are considered, so that the actuator can adapt to different working environments and task requirements. The experimental results show that the pneumatic soft actuator exhibits excellent performance in terms of accuracy, response speed, and controllability. This research provides new ideas and methods for the development of the field of pneumatic actuators and has wide application prospects. The main research content of this paper is as follows: first, the soft pneumatic actuator is modeled and simulated, the structure is optimized on the basis of simulation, and finally, the performance of the actuator is tested.

A Soft Pneumatic Two-Degree-of-Freedom Actuator for Endoscopy

Abstract:The rise of soft robotics opens new opportunities in endoscopy and minimally invasive surgery. Pneumatic catheters offer a promising alternative to conventional steerable catheters for safe navigation through the natural pathways without tissue injury. In this work, we present an optimized 6 mm diameter two-degree-of-freedom pneumatic actuator, able to bend in every direction and incorporating a 1 mm working channel. A versatile vacuum centrifugal overmolding method capable of producing small geometries with a variety of silicones is described, and meter-long actuators are extruded industrially. An improved method for fiber reinforcement is also presented. The actuator achieves bending more than 180° and curvatures of up to 0.1 mm-1. The exerted force remains below 100 mN, and with no rigid parts in the design, it limits the risks of damage on surrounding tissues. The response time of the actuator is below 300 ms and therefore not limited for medical applications. The working space and multi-channel actuation are also experimentally characterized. The focus is on the study of the influence of material stiffness on mechanical performances. As a rule, the softer the material, the better the energy conversion, and the stiffer the material, the larger the force developed at a given curvature. Based on the actuator, a 90 cm long steerable catheter demonstrator carrying an optical fiber is developed, and its potential for endoscopy is demonstrated in a bronchial tree phantom. In conclusion, this work contributes to the development of a toolbox of soft robotic solutions for MIS and endoscopic applications, by validating and characterizing a promising design, describing versatile and scalable fabrication methods, allowing for a better understanding of the influence of material stiffness on the actuator capabilities, and demonstrating the usability of the solution in a potential use-case.

Abstract:A general design parameterization for soft pneumatic actuators that works for multiple types of cylindrical origami patterns with the goal of reducing strain during deformation and maximizing output forces is presented. With this, a monolithic 3‐degree of freedom pneumatic actuator, capable of bending and extension, is designed and 3D printed without support structures. Soft pneumatic actuators (SPAs) have applications in various domains due to their compliance, low cost, and lightweight characteristics. Herein, a geometric origami design for 3‐degree of freedom (DoF) SPAs is presented, which enables manufacturing using 3D printing at one go without any support structure. The proposed method uses a general design parameterization that works for multiple types of cylindrical origami patterns (Kresling, cylindrical Miura, Yoshimura, and Accordion). It is shown that a 3‐DoF pneumatic actuator capable of bending and extension can be constructed by superimposing two cylindrical origami patterns to create a separation of chambers inside of the module. In addition, the design parameters are chosen to reduce the strain during deformation and maximize the output forces of the origami actuator. The actuator is manufactured, and its motion and force profiles are experimentally characterized. The designed origami actuator can bend from −12.2°±0.2° to 94.7°±0.9° and the length during operation can vary between 50% and 126% of the initial length.

Abstract:Background: Pneumatic actuators are widely used in applications like (medical) robots, or prostheses. Pneumatic actuators require a complex manufacturing process and are produced in standardized dimensions to reduce costs. Over the last decade 3D-printing has emerged as a cost-effective and efficient production method in medical applications. 3D-printing can also function as a cost-efficient alternative production method for pneumatic actuators. Objective: The goal of this research is to study the possibility of creating a pneumatic linear actuator with 3D-printing. Furthermore, the aim is to use the advantage of 3D-printing to create pneumatic actuators with non-circular cross-sections. Methodology: To evaluate the performance of a 3D-printed pneumatic actuator, a test setup was designed and built to measure the leakage and sliding friction force. Furthermore, two pneumatic actuators with a non-conventional cross-sectional shape were designed and their performance was tested and compared with a 3D-printed cylindrical pneumatic actuator, since these tests only ran once, the results are more a guideline. During the manufacturing of the cylinders, no post-processing techniques were used. Results: The functioning of a 3D-printed circular pneumatic actuator was proven with low static leakage rates of 2.5%, low dynamic leakage rates of approximately 1%, and a maximum friction force of Image 1. Furthermore, the results show that it is possible to print functioning pneumatic cylinders with a non-cylindrical concave cross-section. The non-conventional cylinders were tested up to Image 2 with maximum dynamic leakage of Image 3. Conclusion: This study demonstrates a method to create functional pneumatic linear actuators with 3D-printing. It was possible to create 3D-printed actuators with a conventional shape, e.g. circular and unconventional shapes e.g. stadium/oval shape and a kidney shape. The leak rates for conventional and unconventional shapes were in the same range. This opens up the world for more design freedom in pneumatic actuators.
3D Manufactured, Water-Powered Soft Actuators for Orthodontic Application

Abstract:Soft actuators with embedded power sources are critical for applications where space is limited but safety and functionality are demanded. We have successfully demonstrated (1) a 3D design/fabrication/packaging scheme that can readily upgrade conventional hydraulic actuators into autonomous osmotic actuators, and (2) integrated soft actuators that can yield desired locomotion and force outputs for orthodontic application. Flexible composite structures with semipermeable interfaces are employed to realize the desired actuation, including elongation, contraction, bending, and twisting. More specifically, thin-walled polymer bellows are utilized to control and amplify the actuation caused by osmosis. In the prototype demonstration, 25 mm long soft bellow structures with outer diameters up to 4 mm and wall thicknesses down to 250 μm were designed, 3D printed, shrink wrapped with semipermeable membranes, assembled, and characterized. When placed in aqueous media, the actuators were osmotically pressurized to function in steady and preprogrammed manners. The constant water flow rate across the semipermeable interface (with an effective working area of 30 mm2) into each presented osmotic actuator was measured to be 156 μl h−1, while the inner pressure can reach 200 kPa in few hours. It was demonstrated that both the inner/outer pressure difference and locomotion/force outputs are proportional to the actuation time. When applied on teeth, the osmotic actuators are expected to steadily overcome the rising resistance from surrounding tissues, and therefore achieve constant-rate and long-lasting movement of teeth. In addition to pumping, it is demonstrated for the first time that osmotic actuation can be tailored to accomplish sophisticated locomotion functions.
