Abstract:A series of lanthanide coordination polymers(LnCPs) containing both light and heavy rare-earth elements, namely {[Eu-2(pydc)(3)(H2O)]2H(2)O}(n) (1-Eu, H(2)pydc = pyridine-2,3-dicarboxylic acid), [Ln(pyc)(2)(Hpyc) (NO3)] n (Ln = Nd (2-Nd), Sm (3-Sm), Eu (4-Eu), Gd (5-Gd), Tb (6-Tb), Ho (7-Ho), and Er (8-Er), Hpyc = pyridine-3-carboxylic acid), has been synthesized under hydro(solvo) thermal conditions and fully characterized. The crystal structure analysis indicates that in situ decarboxylation of H2pydc occurred in the synthesis process of 2-Nd-8-Er. Coordination polymer 1-Eu displays a 3-D pcu network with centralsymmetric quad-core structural units [Eu4(COO)(6)] linked by 1-D chains. 2-Nd-8-Er are of triple helical chain enantiomeric pair 6(1)/6(5) axis, and can be further linked through two separate kinds of H. bonding interaction to form a mirror symmetrical 3-D framework; the final topological symbol of the jointly connected network is rare {4(7)center dot 6(8)}. Solid-state luminescence studies show that the emission spectra of these LnCPs cover both the visible and near-infrared luminescence region. 2-Nd exhibits characteristic F-4(3/2) -> I-4(J/2) (J = 9, 11, 13) transition NIR emission. 1-Eu and 4-Eu provide characteristic D-5(o) -> F-7(J) intense and bright red luminescence, while 4-Eu exhibits better luminescence performance because of the presence of the O-H oscillators within 1-Eu. 6-Tb exhibits characteristic D-5(4) -> F-7(J) intense and bright green luminescence. Furthermore, through doping with PMMA polymer, the luminescence properties of 4-Eu and 6-Tb are all improved. The results show the best doping concentration is 4%. The thermal stabilities of 4-Eu-PMMA and 6-Tb-PMMA increased from 270 to 315 degrees C when compared with single coordination polymers 4-Eu and 6-Tb. The co-doping of 4-Eu, 5-Gd, and 6-Tb (0.92/0.04/0.04) with PMMA at a total concentration of 4% resulted in a tunable luminescence material W-(4-Eu,W- 5-Gd,W- 6-Tb)-PMMA film. When excited at 285 nm, W-(4-Eu,W-5-Gd,W-6-Tb)-PMMA shows white-light emission with the CIE chromaticity coordinates of (0.33, 0.35). The lifetime of Eu3+ ions in W(4-Eu, 5-Gd, 6-Tb)-PMMA increased from 1032.24 mu s to 1272.26 mu s when compared with 4-Eu-PMMA, and the efficiency of energy transfer (eta(ET)) from Tb3+ to Eu3+ within the co-doping PMMA film could be estimated to be 29.9%.

Abstract:A series of Y1-xEuxTa1-yNbyO4 (x=0-0.20, y=0-1.00) are synthesized by a modified solid state reaction method. When the concentration of NbO43- in yttrium tantalate is low, the structure of these systems is M' type YTaO4, With increasing concentration of NbO43-, its structure completely changed from M' type YTaO4 to fergusonite YNbO4. Under UV excitation, the emission, spectra of YTaO4 : Nb, Eu consist of two parts, the emission band between 300-450 nm is the charge transfer emission of NbO43-, and the sharp line emissions in the range of 500-720 nm originate from the transition of electrons in 4f shell of Eu3+. The main peak at 612.7 nm can be ascribed to the Eu3+5D0-->F-7(2) transition and shows a strong red emission. Fixing the concentration of Nb5+ and Eu3+ separately, and changing the concentration of another ions, the luminescent properties of Y1-xEuxTa1-yNbyO4 will change rapidly. The difference of luminescence is originated from different structures. The excitation spectra of NbO43- emission (lambda = 400 nm) in YTa0.98Nb0.02O4 is a strong excitation band peak at 235 nm. In fact, the band is composed of charge transfer excitation of TaO43- and charge transfer excitation of NbO43-. The excitation spectra of Eu3+5D0-->F-7(2) transition emission have two parts, the sharp lines between 300-600 nm and wide band between 200-300 nm. The sharp lines originate from Eu3+ f-f electron transitions, and the wide band includes both charge transfer excitation of TaO43- and NbO43-, and charge transfer excitation of Eu3+. The excitation spectra of NbO43- emission (lambda = 400 nm) in Y0.99Eu0.01Ta0.98Nb0.02O4 is also a strong band, in which there also exists a charge transfer excitation of TaO43- and a charge transfer excitation of NbO43-. The strong evidence from excitation spectra, emission spectra of this system show that there is a energy transfer from host lattice to activator in the process of luminescence.

Abstract:Monodispersed Eu-doped BaTiO3 nanocrystallites with a pseudo-cubic perovskite phase were successfully prepared using highly concentrated alkoxide solution under hydrothermal conditions at temperatures <100 °C. The obtained nanoparticles had a very narrow particle size distribution and the average value was about 10 nm. By dispersing a piece of BaTiO3 bulk gel into mixed solvent of 2-methoxyethonal and acetylacetone, we obtained well-dispersed and stable suspensions of Eu-doped BaTiO3 nanocrystallites with a high transmittance. Using these suspensions, nanostructured thin films with a low porosity and a smooth surface were synthesized on Pt/Ti/SiO2/Si substrate by electrophoretic deposition. The obtained Eu-doped BaTiO3 thin films showed strong, visible room temperature photoluminescence (PL) associated with Eu ions. The PL spectra had typical ones for Eu3+ band corresponding to 5Do–7Fj electronic transitions with a maximum intensity at 613 nm.
2D Lanthanide MOFs Driven by a Rigid 3,5-Bis(3-carboxy-phenyl)pyridine Building Block: Solvothermal Syntheses, Structural Features, and Photoluminescence and Sensing Properties

Abstract:A new series of five lanthanide(III) metal-organic frameworks with a general formula of [Ln(3)(bcpb)(4)(mu-HCOO)( mu-H2O)(H2O)(2)(DEF)](n) (1-5) was generated by solvothermal reactions from Ln(NO3)(3).6H(2)O {Ln = Eu (1), Tb (2), Gd (3), Dy (4), and Sm (5)} and 3,5-bis(3-carboxyphenyl) pyridine (H(2)bcpb) in an aqueous N, N-diethylformamide (DEF) medium. The obtained products were characterized by elemental analysis, FT-IR spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and powder and single crystal X-ray diffraction. The latter reveals that all compounds (1-5) are isostructural and feature very intricate 2D metal-organic frameworks. These were topologically analyzed, revealing a very complex hexanodal underlying net that can be simplified further to a binodal 3,5-connected layer with the 3,5L52 topology. Solid-state photoluminescence properties of 1-5 were studied in detail. Compound 1 exhibits a strong red luminescence upon excitation at 338 nm and its lifetime is 532 mu s. Compound 2 shows an intense green luminescence upon excitation at 336 and its lifetime is 981 mu s. The triplet state ((3)pi pi*) of bcpb(2-) studied by using the Gd(III) derivative 3 demonstrated that the ligand effectively populates Tb(III) emission (Phi = 70.96%), whereas the corresponding Eu(III) derivative 1 shows a weak luminescence efficiency (Phi = 15.81%) as the triplet state of bcpb(2-) has a poor match with the D-5(0) energy level of Eu(III). A notable feature of 1 is its remarkable sensing ability for Cu2+ ions and 2,4,6-trinitrophenol (TNP). Besides, a series of heterobimetallic Tb-based MOFs, [Tb3(1-x)Eu3x(bcpb)(4)(mu-HCOO)(mu-H2O)(H2O)(2)(DEF)](n) {x = 0.001, 0.002, 0.003, 0.01, 0.02, 0.03, 0.04, 0.10, 0.15, 0.20} (compounds 2a-2j, respectively), was prepared. The luminescence studies reveal that the simultaneous presence of the characteristic sharp emission bands of Eu3+ and Tb3+ allows the tuning of the photoluminescence colors of such materials by adjusting the doping concentration of the Eu3+ ions.
Host-sensitized luminescence properties in CaNb2O6:Ln(3+) (Ln(3+) = Eu(3+)/Tb(3+)/Dy(3+)/Sm(3+)) phosphors with abundant colors

Abstract:A series of Ln(3+) (Ln(3+) = Eu(3+)/Tb(3+)/Dy(3+)/Sm(3+)) ion doped CaNb2O6 (CNO) phosphors have been prepared via the conventional high-temperature solid-state reaction route. The X-ray diffraction (XRD) and structure refinement, diffuse reflection, photoluminescence (PL), and fluorescent decay curves were used to characterize the as-prepared samples. Under UV radiation, the CNO host present a broad emission band from about 355 to 605 nm centered around 460 nm originating from the NbO6 octahedral groups, which has spectral overlaps with the excitation of f-f transitions of Eu(3+)/Tb(3+)/Dy(3+)/Sm(3+) in CNO:Eu(3+)/Tb(3+)/Dy(3+)/Sm(3+) samples. They show both host emission and respective emission lines derived from the characteristic f-f transitions of activators, which present different emission colors owing to the energy transfer from the NbO6 group in the host to Eu(3+)/Tb(3+)/Dy(3+)/Sm(3+) with increasing activator concentrations. The decreases of decay lifetimes of host emissions in CNO:Eu(3+)/Tb(3+)/Dy(3+)/Sm(3+) demonstrate the energy transfer from the hosts to Eu(3+)/Tb(3+)/Dy(3+)/Sm(3+). The energy transfer mechanisms in CNO:Eu(3+)/Tb(3+)/Dy(3+) phosphors have been determined to be a resonant type via dipole-dipole mechanisms. For CNO:Sm(3+), the metal-metal charge transfer transition (MMCT) might contribute to the different variations of decay lifetimes and emission intensity from CNO:Eu(3+)/Tb(3+)/Dy(3+) samples. The best quantum efficiency is 71.2% for CNO:0.01/0.02Dy(3+). The PL properties of as-prepared materials indicate the promising application in UV-pumped white-emitting lighting diodes field.
Study on Highly Ordered Luminescent Langmuir–Blodgett Films of Heteropolytungstate Complexes Containing Lanthanide

Abstract:Luminescent thin films of heteropolytungstate complexes containing lanthanide (europium or samarium) were successfully fabricated by the Langmuir–Blodgett (LB) technique. The pressure–area isotherm of the monolayer of dimethyldioctadecylammonium bromide (DODA) is modified rather markedly when the subphase contains the complex of Na9EuW10O36 or Na9SmW10O36. The above results indicate that the monolayer of DODA has a strong interaction with the polyanions of EuW10O369− (or SmW10O369−). X-ray photoelectron spectra and fluorescent spectra verify that europium and tungsten atoms are incorporated into the LB films. Ultraviolet (UV), fluorescent spectra and low-angle X-ray diffraction experiments demonstrate that these LB films have a well-defined lamellar structure. The LB film containing EuW10O369− can give off strong fluorescence on UV irradiation. The characteristic emission behaviors of europium ions in LB films and in the powder of Na9EuW10O36 are discussed. It is found that the intensity ratio of the 5D0→7F2 transition to the 5D0→7F1 transition in LB film is quite different from that in the powder of Na9EuW10O36. The difference of the ratio indicates that the site symmetry of europium is distorted in LB film, which is probably due to the strong electrostatic interactions between DODA and polyanions.

In addition, the photoluminescence properties of compounds I-Sm, I-Eu, and II-Dy were measured, and the time-resolved emission spectra showed that the {P2Se2Nb6} segment contributed to the energy transfer from the polyoxoniobate units to the Ln3+ center, which effectively promoted the emission of the Ln3+ center.

Abstract:The effect of the addition of Nb2O5 (up to 5 mol%) on the structure and luminescent properties of ZnO-B2O3 glass doped with 0.5 mol% (1.32 × 1022) Eu2O3 was investigated by applying infrared (IR), Raman and photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy. Through differential thermal analysis and density measurements, various physical properties such as molar volume, oxygen packing density and glass transition temperature were determined. IR and Raman spectra revealed that niobium ions enter into the base zinc borate glass structure as NbO4 tetrahedra and NbO6 octahedra. A strong red emission from the 5D0 level of Eu3+ ions was registered under near UV (392 nm) excitation using the 7F0 → 5L6 transition of Eu3+. The integrated fluorescence intensity ratio R (5D0 → 7F2/5D0 → 7F1) was calculated to estimate the degree of asymmetry around the active ion, suggesting a location of Eu3+ in non-centrosymmetric sites. The higher Eu3+ luminescence emission observed in zinc borate glasses containing 1–5 mol% Nb2O5 compared to the Nb2O5-free zinc borate glass evidences that Nb2O5 is an appropriate component for modifying the host glass structure and improving the emission intensity.

Abstract:Three new complexes Na[Ln(pic)4]ּ⋅2.5H2O (Ln = Tb, Eu or Gd; pic = picolinate) were synthesized and characterized by infrared spectroscopy, powder X-ray diffraction and thermogravimetric analyses. The molecular structures of the complexes have been determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The three isostructural lanthanide complexes crystalize in the hexagonal system with space group P6122 to Eu complex and Gd complex and space group P6522 to Tb complex. In each of the complexes, the picolinate ligands are bonded to Ln3+ and Na+ ions by different coordination modes promoting polymeric structures. The photoluminescent properties of complexes were studied and combined with theoretical studies using the density functional theory (DFT: B3LYP, PBE1PBE) and the semiempirical method AM1/Sparkle from the single crystal X-ray diffraction structures to assign a suitable model for describing the system. The B3LYP DFT functional was considered the most adequate for providing structural properties of the compounds and for describing luminescence properties. The excited triplet states (T1) and excited singlet states (S1) of the ligand were determined theoretically using Time-dependent DFT calculations (TD-DFT: B3LYP, CAM-B3LYP and LC-wPBE) and INDO/S-CIS, with the best agreement with experimental values obtained from the LC-wPBE DFT functional. The photoluminescent spectra of the complexes and their lifetime measurements were determined indicating that the Eu complex and Tb complex display different intramolecular energy transfer mechanisms with higher efficiency to ligand-to-terbium energy transfer. In addition, the experimental and theorical Judd-Ofelt intensity parameters and quantum yields of the complexes were also determined and discussed besides to a proposed 9-state diagram to describe the luminescence properties of the Eu complex. The low value of emission quantum efficiency of 5D0 emitting level of Eu(III) ion was explained by the presence of the ligand-to-metal charge transfer state (LMCT) evidenced experimentally and theoretically. A good agreement was obtained between the proposed kinetic model and experimental results showing the consistency of the set of rate equations assumed and the intramolecular pathways proposed.

Abstract:Novel hybrid thin films covalently doped with Eu3+ (Tb3+) have been prepared via direct routes involving co-condensation of tetraethoxysilane and phen-Si in the presence of Eu3+ (Tb3+) by spin-casting and their luminescence properties have been investigated in detail. Lanthanide ions can be sensitized by anchored phenanthroline in hybrid thin films. Excitation at the ligand absorption wavelength (272 nm) resulted in the strong emission of the lanthanide ions i.e. Eu3+ 5D0–7FJ (J=0, 1, 2, 3, 4) emission lines and Tb3+ 5D4–7FJ (J=6, 5, 4, 3) due to the energy transfer from the ligands to the lanthanide ions.

Abstract:Six three-dimensional nanoporous lanthanide coordination polymers, [Ln(2)(bpdc)(3)(HCOOH)(2)](n) [Ln = Eu (1), Sm (2), La (3), Ce (4), Gd (5) and Nd (6)], were prepared by the solvothermal reactions of the Ln(III) ions with 4,4'-biphenyldicarboxylate (H(2)bpdc) in DMF solution. Crystallographic data show that compounds 1-6 are isomorphous and crystallize in monoclinic, space group C-2. Each Ln(III) is eight-coordinated to seven O atoms from six bpdc(2-) ligands and one O atom from HCOOH molecule in distorted bisdisphenoid coordination geometry. The adjacent Ln(III) ions are intraconnected by the carboxylate groups of the bpdc(2-) ligands to form a 1D inorganic rod-shaped chain [Ln(CO2)(3)](n). The inorganic chains are interconnected by the biphenyl groups, giving rise to a 3D framework that consists in two types of 1D open channels, with 15.11 x 27.05 angstrom rhombic channels along the b axis and 8.66 x 15.91 angstrom quadrate channels along the c axis without interpenetration. Compounds 1 and 6 are strong luminescent materials which exhibit characteristic Eu-III emission bands in the visible region for 1 and Nd-III emission bands in the near IR region for 6 upon excitation at 360 nm. The absence of the ligand emission can be ascribed to the energy transfer from the bpdc(2-) ligand to the LnIII ion during photoluminescence. The magnetic properties of compounds 1, 4, 5 and 6 have been investigated through the measurement of their magnetic susceptibilities over the temperature range of 1.8-300 K.
Facile Synthesis, Novel Structure, Multicolor Luminescence, and Potential Applications of Lanthanide Ions Doped Bismuth Titanate Phosphors

Abstract:A variety of lanthanide ions doped bismuth titanate (Bi4Ti3O12) luminescent materials with eminent downconversion (DC) and up-conversion (UC) luminescence performance have been fabricated via a facile sol-gel approach. The XRD, XPS, and EDX elemental mapping results confirm the phase structure of orthorhombic Bi4Ti3O12 (BTO), and the lanthanide activator ions occupy the Bi3+ lattice sites in the BTO crystal. Under UV or NIR excitation, the Eu3+, Yb3+/Ln3+ (Ln = Er, Tm, and Ho) doped Bi4Ti3O12 samples exhibit characteristic red, green, blue, and green emissions. The luminescent mechanisms of the BTO:Eu3+ and BTO:Yb3+/Ln3+ samples are discussed based on the energy level diagrams. The doping concentrations of Eu3+, Yb3+, Er3+, Tm3+, Ho3+ ions and annealing temperature and time are optimized, whose optimal values are determined to be 14, 8, 1, 0.4, 1 mol% and 800 oC, 4 h. The as-obtained LED devices fabricated by Bi4Ti3O12:Eu3+ and Yb3+/Ln3+ phosphors exhibit dazzling multicolor visible light emissions from different Ln3+ ions. The results indicate that the asobtained Ln3+ doped BTO phosphors may be potentially utilized in LED devices and solid-state lighting. Furthermore, the Eu3+ and Er3+ co-doped BTO samples exhibit different DC and UC luminescence spectral profiles when excited at various UV, visible, or NIR wavelengths, revealing their eminent feasibility and great potential in anti-counterfeiting applications.

Abstract:In this study, the photoluminescence (PL) behavior of two aluminosilicate glass series containing alkali-niobates ranging from 0.4 to 20 mol% was investigated. The glasses exhibit an intense visible emission centered at ~18,400 cm−1 for the peralkaline series and at higher energies (~19,300 cm−1) for the metaluminous glasses. However, the photoluminescence emission intensity varies significantly with the niobate content and the bulk chemistry. PL and fluorescence lifetime measurements indicate that the broad emission bands result from the overlap of different niobate populations, whose distribution changes with niobate content. The distinct PL behavior in the two glass series was related to the structural evolution of the niobate units upon niobium addition. An enhancement of the visible emission was observed for a higher fraction of distorted [NbO6] units. Eu-doping was carried out as a structural probe of the glass network, and also to determine if these glasses could be used as potential rare earth element (REE) activators. The crystal field strength around Eu ions is strongly dependent on the bulk chemistry and the niobate content. Furthermore, the peralkaline series showed energy transfer from the host [NbO6] to Eu3+, confirming the feasibility of exploring niobate glasses and glass-ceramics as lanthanide ion-activated luminescent materials. In addition, glass-ceramics (GCs) containing alkali-niobate phases with a perovskite-like structure were developed and studied to verify the optical performance of these materials. It was verified that the bulk chemistry influences crystallization behavior, and also the photoluminescence response. The transparent GC from the metaluminous series exhibits a quenching of the Eu3+ emission, whereas an enhanced emission intensity is observed for the peralkaline GC. The latter shows a strong excitation-dependent PL emission, suggesting energy transfer and migration of electronic excitation from one Eu population to another. Additionally, Eu3+ emissions arising from the D15 and D25 excited states were observed, highlighting the low phonon energy achievable in niobo-aluminosilicate hosts.

Abstract:The work presented herein reports on the synthesis, structural and physicochemical characterization and luminescence properties of a family of isostructural coordination polymers (CPs) with a general formula {[Ln(6m2onic) 4 Na(H 2 O) 3 ]·8H 2 O} n (where Ln( III ) = Nd ( 1 Nd ), Sm ( 2 Sm ), Dy ( 3 Dy ), Er ( 4 Er ), Tm ( 5 Tm ), Yb ( 6 Yb ) and Dy 0.77 Eu 0.12 Y 0.11 for the multi-metal compound ( 7 DyEuY ) and 6m2onic = 6-methyl-2-oxonicotinate). The crystal structures consist of one-dimensional heterometallic arrays where octacoordinated lanthanide and hexacoordinated sodium centres are sequentially linked and which are held together into a 3D architecture by an extensive hydrogen bonding network formed by the crystallisation water molecules. Photoluminescence measurements in the solid state at variable temperature reveal good properties based on the capacity of the 6m2onic ligand to provide ligand-centred excitation, as suggested by time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT), and promote efficient energy transfers to the lanthanide( III ) ions, to eventually present intense emissions in both the visible and near-infrared (NIR) regions. On the one hand, compound 4 Er displays characteristic lanthanide-centred bands in the NIR region even at room temperature, meaning that the framework is able to isolate the excitons from the vibrational quenching component. On the other hand, regarding the compounds emitting in the visible region, the almost white light emitted by compound 3 Dy with a quantum yield (QY) of 6.2% should be noted. Both a purer white emission and an improved QY (up to 15.8%) may be achieved by means of a doping strategy of europium and yttrium ions into the Dy counterpart. Finally, taking advantage of white light emitted by compound 3 Dy , the chemical and optical stabilities in water have been confirmed by the photophysical study performed in solution.

Abstract:Structural properties of LnBaB(9)O(16) (Ln = La, Y) were investigated by means of Xray powder diffraction, electron diffraction and luminescence. These compounds crystallize in the monoclinic crystal system with lattice parameters a = 1. 366 0 nm, b=0. 788 0 nm, c= 1. 625 3 nm and beta= 106. 15 degrees for LaBaB9O16 and a = 1. 347 6 nm, b=0. 777 6 nm, c= 1. 604 0 nm and beta= 106. 38 degrees for YBaB9O16, The study of luminescence spectra of EU3+ doped materials:reveals that the structures of these two compounds are different. The local symmetry of the rare earth ions is central symmetric in YBaB9O16 and non-central symmetric in LaBaB9O16 The emission intensity of LaBaB9O16 : EU3+ is enhanced by partial substitution of La3+ with Gd3+. Absorption of LaBaB9O16 : EU3+ in:the VUV region is relatively weak, which may be related to the small ratio of B : O.

Abstract:SnO2 nanocrystal and rare-earth Eu3+ ion co-doped SiO2 thin films are prepared by sol-gel and spin coating methods. The formation of tetragonal rutile structure SnO2 nanocrystals with a uniform distribution is confirmed by X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy is used to investigate the densities of the hydroxyl groups, and it is found that the emission intensity from the D-5(0)-F-7(2) transitions of the Eu3+ ions is enhanced by two orders of magnitude due to energy transfer from the oxygen-vacancy-related defects of the SnO2 nanocrystals to nearby Eu3+ ions. The influences of the amounts of Sn and the post-annealing temperatures are systematically evaluated to further understand the mechanism of energy transfer. The luminescence intensity ratio of Eu3+ ions from electric dipole transition and magnetic dipole transition indicate the different probable locations of Eu3+ ions in the sol-gel thin film, which are further discussed based on temperature-dependent photoluminescence measurements.

Abstract:A series of ternary lanthanide beta-diketonate derivatives covalently bonded to xerogels (named as Ln-DP-xerogel, Ln = Sm, Yb, Nd, Er, Pr, Ho) by doubly functionalized alkoxysilane (dbm-Si) was synthesized in situ via a sol-gel process. The properties of these xerogel materials were investigated by Fourier-transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), diffuse reflectance (DR) spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analyses, and fluorescence spectroscopy. The data and analyses suggest that the lanthanide derivatives have been covalently grafted to the corresponding xerogels successfully. Of importance here is that, after excitation with visible light (400-410 nm), the xerogels. all show characteristic visible (Sm3+) as well as near-infrared (NIR; Sm3+, Yb3+, Nd3+, Er3+, Pr3+, Ho3+) luminescence of the corresponding Ln(3+) ions, which is attributed to the energy transfer from the ligands to the Ln(3+) ions via an antenna effect. Exciting with visible light is advantageous over UV excitation. Furthermore, to the best of our knowledge, it is the first observation of NIR luminescence with visible light excitation from xerogels covalently bonded with the Sm3+, Pr3+, and Ho3+ derivatives. Compared to lanthanide complexes (Ln = Er, Nd, Yb) functionalized periodic mesoporous organosilica (PMO) materials that exhibit similar optical properties reported in our previous work, the Ln-DP-xerogel (Ln = Sm, Yb, Nd, Er, Pr, Ho) in this case offer advantages in terms of ease of synthesis and handling and potentially low cost for emerging technological applications. Development of near-infrared luminescence of the lanthanide materials with visible light excitation is of strong interest to emerging applications such as chemosensors, laser systems, and optical amplifiers.

Abstract:Inorganic materials doped with rare earth (RE) ions are an object of intense research due to their optical and electrical properties. These materials have the potential for various applications, such as solid-state lasers, active planar waveguides, optical fiber amplifiers, light-emitting diodes (LEDs), displays, ink fillers, security features, etc. RE trivalent ions can emit light from the ultraviolet (UV) to the near-infrared (NIR) regions due to electronic transitions of the 4f-5d levels. Yttrium borate doped with europium ions was prepared by solid-state synthesis in a muffle furnace at 900oC for 4 hours, while lanthanum and aluminum borates doped with europium ions were prepared at 1000oC for 6 hours again in a muffle furnace. The resulting materials are fine white powders. Among the rare earth ions, europium is one of the most commonly used activators because the ions of Eu3+ and Eu2+ can be used as emission sites in the host lattices. Eu3+ ions can produce effective sharp emission peaks in different matrix compositions. Photoluminescence analysis of the samples was performed, based on which the luminescence intensity of the Eu3+ ion was determined through a comparative characteristic. YBO3:Eu3+ phosphor is optically active and chemically stable. It is characterized by a strong orange-red emission at ≈ 591 nm, ≈ 612 and ≈ 696 nm due to the 5D0→7F1 and 5D0→7F2 electronic transitions, respectively. Red emission is also observed for LaBO3:Eu3+ at ≈ 592 and ≈ 615 nm, characterizing the 5D0→7F1 and 5D0→7Fj (j=0, 1, 2, 3, 4) transitions. While aluminum borate doped with europium ion shows intense emission at ≈ 612 nm, making this material suitable for lighting devices. The technique of Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) was used to study the structure of the obtained materials.

Abstract:Near-infrared (NIR) luminescent ternary and hydrated binary neodymium β-diketonates emitting at ca. 1330 nm are presented. The effects of ligand moieties on the photoluminescence properties of Nd3+ ions are discussed. Moreover, the neodymium organic complex neodymium tris(2-theonyltrifluoroacetonate)bis(triphenylphosphine oxide), Nd(TTA)3(TPPO)2, which has the best photoluminescence properties among all investigated neodymium complexes, is incorporated into vinyltriethoxysilane-derived ORMOSIL (organically modified silicate) film by a multistep sol–gel process. The Nd doping concentration was up to 5 mol% related to Si. The spectroscopic results about as-doped ORMOSIL films indicate that the ligands around Nd3+ ions indeed shield effectively Nd3+ ions from luminescence-quenching impurities in the host matrix, such as OH groups.

Abstract:OBJECTIVE This study sought to evaluate the existence and implications of familial aggregation of emotional and behavioral problems of childhood in a general population sample. METHOD The children included in the study were chosen with the use of a sampling technique that identified households in which there were two or more children aged 4-16 years living at home at the time of the survey. Ratings on checklists of emotional and behavioral problems were obtained from parents, teachers of children in elementary school, and the children themselves if they were adolescents aged 12-16. Children were classified as having problems if their scores on scales of conduct, attention deficit, or emotional problems were in the top 10% of the distribution of scores from any informant. RESULTS There was evidence for familial aggregation of these problems, particularly conduct and emotional problems. However, this was largely derived from the parents' reports of symptoms, not the teachers' or adolescents' reports. The degree of familial aggregation varied according to certain sibship characteristics and patterns of comorbidity. CONCLUSIONS Familial aggregation of emotional and behavioral problems does exist in a community population and is not simply an artifact of clinic attendance.
