Abstract:Vibronic coupling is a central issue in molecular spectroscopy. Here we investigate vibronic coupling within a single pentacene molecule in real space by imaging the spatial distribution of single-molecule electroluminescence via highly localized excitation of tunneling electrons in a controlled plasmonic junction. The observed two-spot orientation for certain vibronic-state imaging is found to be evidently different from the purely electronic 0–0 transition, rotated by 90°, which reflects the change in the transition dipole orientation from along the molecular short axis to the long axis. Such a change reveals the occurrence of strong vibronic coupling associated with a large Herzberg–Teller contribution, going beyond the conventional Franck–Condon picture. The emergence of large vibration-induced transition charges oscillating along the long axis is found to originate from the strong dynamic perturbation of the anti-symmetric vibration on those carbon atoms with large transition density populations during electronic transitions.
Tip-Enhanced Sum Frequency Generation for Molecular Vibrational Nanospectroscopy

Abstract:Vibrational sum frequency generation (SFG) is a nonlinear spectroscopic technique widely used to study the molecular structure and dynamics of surface systems. However, the spatial resolution achieved by far-field observations is constrained by the diffraction limit, obscuring molecular details in inhomogeneous structures smaller than the wavelength of light. To overcome this limitation, we developed a system for tip-enhanced SFG (TE-SFG) spectroscopy based on a scanning tunneling microscope. We successfully detected vibrational TE-SFG signals from adsorbed molecules on a gold substrate under ambient conditions. The phase analysis of interferometric SFG spectra provided information on molecular orientation. Furthermore, the observed TE-SFG signal was confirmed to originate from a highly localized region within a gap between the tip apex and the sample substrate. This method offers a novel platform for nonlinear optical nanospectroscopy, paving the way for the investigation of surface molecular systems beyond the diffraction limit.

Abstract:Photothermal microscopy is a highly sensitive pump-probe method for mapping nanostructures and molecules through the detection of local thermal gradients. While visible photothermal microscopy and mid-infrared photothermal microscopy techniques have been developed, they possess inherent limitations. These techniques either lack chemical specificity or encounter significant light attenuation caused by water absorption. Here, we present an overtone photothermal (OPT) microscopy technique that offers high chemical specificity, detection sensitivity, and spatial resolution by employing a visible probe for local heat detection in the C-H overtone region. We demonstrate its capability for high-fidelity chemical imaging of polymer nanostructures, depth-resolved intracellular chemical mapping of cancer cells, and imaging of multicellular C. elegans organisms and highly scattering brain tissues. By bridging the gap between visible and mid-infrared photothermal microscopy, OPT establishes a new modality for high-resolution and high-sensitivity chemical imaging. This advancement complements large-scale shortwave infrared imaging approaches, facilitating multiscale structural and chemical investigations of materials and biological metabolism.
Selective Excitation of Vibrations in a Single Molecule

Abstract:The capability to excite, probe, and manipulate vibrational modes is essential for understanding and controlling chemical reactions at the molecular level. Recent advancements in tip-enhanced Raman spectroscopies have enabled the probing of vibrational fingerprints in a single molecule with Angstrom-scale spatial resolution. However, achieving controllable excitation of specific vibrational modes in individual molecules remains challenging. Here, we demonstrate the selective excitation and probing of vibrational modes in single deprotonated phthalocyanine molecules utilizing resonance Raman spectroscopy in a scanning tunneling microscope. Selective excitation is achieved by finely tuning the excitation wavelength of the laser to be resonant with the vibronic transitions between the molecular ground electronic state and the vibrational levels in the excited electronic state, resulting in the state-selective enhancement of the resonance Raman signal. Our approach sets the stage for steering chemical transformations in molecules on surfaces by selective excitation of molecular vibrations.

Abstract:Tip-enhanced nano-spectroscopy and -imaging, such as tip-enhanced photoluminescence (TEPL), tip-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (TERS), and others, have become indispensable from materials science to single molecule studies. However, the techniques suffer from inconsistent performance due to lack of nanoscale control of tip apex structure, which often leads to irreproducible spectral, spatial, and polarization resolved imaging. Instead of refining tip-fabrication to resolve this problem, we pursue the inverse approach of optimizing the nano-optical vector-field at the tip apex via adaptive optics. Specifically, we demonstrate dynamic wavefront shaping of the excitation field to effectively couple light to the tip and adaptively control for enhanced sensitivity and polarization-controlled TEPL and TERS, with performance exceeding what can be achieved by conventional tip-fabrication and optimal excitation polarization. Employing a sequence feedback algorithm, we achieve 4.4$\times$10$^4$-fold TEPL enhancement of a WSe$_2$ monolayer which is >2$\times$ larger than the normal TEPL intensity without wavefront shaping, as well as the largest plasmon-enhanced PL intensity of a transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD) monolayer reported to date. In addition, with dynamical near-field polarization control in TERS, we demonstrate the investigation of conformational heterogeneity of brilliant cresyl blue (BCB) molecules as well as the controllable observation of IR-active modes due to a large gradient field effect. Adaptive tip-enhanced spectroscopy and imaging thus provides for a new systematic approach towards computational nanoscopy making optical nano-imaging more robust, versatile, and widely deployable.

Abstract:Tip-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (TERS) is a valuable method for surface analysis with nanometer to angstrom-scale resolution, however, the accurate simulation of particular TERS signals remains a computational challenge. We present a unique approach to this challenge by combining the two main contributors to plasmon-enhanced Raman spectroscopy and to the high resolution in TERS in particular, the electromagnetic and the chemical effect, into one quantum mechanical simulation. The electromagnetic effect describes the sample's interaction with the strong, highly localized and inhomogeneous electric fields associated with the plasmonic tip, and is typically the thematic focus for most mechanistic studies. On the other hand, the chemical effect covers the different responses to the extremely close-range and highly position-sensitive chemical interaction between the apex tip atom(s) and the sample, and, as we could show in previous works, plays an often underestimated role. Starting from a (time-dependent) density functional theory description of the chemical model system, comprised of a tin(II) phthalocyanine (SnPc) sample molecule and a single silver atom as tip, we introduce the electromagnetic effect through a series of point charges that recreate the electric field in the vicinity of the plasmonic Ag nanoparticle. By scanning the tip over the molecule along a 3D grid, we can investigate the system's Raman response on each position for non-resonant and resonant illumination. Simulating both effects on their own already hints at the achievable signal enhancement and resolution, but the combination of both creates even stronger evidence that TERS is capable of resolving sub-molecular features.

Abstract:Structure, dynamics, and coupling involving single-molecules determine function in catalytic, electronic or biological systems. While vibrational spectroscopy provides insight into molecular structure, rapid fluctuations blur the molecular trajectory even in single-molecule spectroscopy, analogous to spatial averaging in measuring large ensembles. To gain insight into intramolecular coupling, substrate coupling, and dynamic processes, we use tip-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (TERS) at variable and cryogenic temperatures, to slow and control the motion of a single molecule. We resolve intrinsic line widths of individual normal modes, allowing detailed and quantitative investigation of the vibrational modes. From temperature dependent line narrowing and splitting, we quantify ultrafast vibrational dephasing, intramolecular coupling, and conformational heterogeneity. Through statistical correlation analysis of fluctuations of individual modes, we observe rotational motion and spectral fluctuations of the molecule. This work demonstrates single-molecule vibrational spectroscopy beyond chemical identification, opening the possibility for a complete picture of molecular motion ranging from femtoseconds to minutes.

Abstract:Non-resonant Raman imaging associated with vibrational modes provides an optical means to structure and function characterisation for a single molecule, where the interference between atomic motions in a vibrational mode plays an important role. Taking the [18]annulene as a proof-of-the-concept molecule, we present here a comprehensive study on the dependence of non-resonant Raman images on interference variations involving the phase and amplitude of atomic displacements in vibrational modes. Calculations demonstrate that constructive and destructive phase interferences contribute to the characteristic merging and repulsion of Raman patterns, respectively, which should be attributed to the same/opposite signs of Raman polarisability. In addition, the imaging characteristic by constructive and destructive interferences become more significant with the increase of plasmonic size. Moreover, Raman images are highly sensitive to the subtle variations of interference induced by molecular symmetry and element substitution, highlighting the importance of amplitude variations of interference in modes for Raman images to monitor molecular structure changes. Our findings propose the capability of Raman images toward capturing interference variations in modes, serving as good references for Raman imaging to characterise various molecules and their corresponding structure changes by analysing interference effects in vibrational modes.

Resonant TERS of a Single-Molecule Kondo System

Abstract:Single-molecule tip-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (TERS) under ultra-high vacuum (UHV) and cryogenic conditions enables exploration of the relations between the adsorption geometry, electronic state, and vibrational fingerprints of individual molecules. TERS capability of reflecting spin states in open-shell molecular configurations is yet unexplored. Here we use the tip of a scanning probe microscope to lift a perylene-3,4,9,10-tetracarboxylic dianhydride (PTCDA) molecule from a metal surface to bring it into an open-shell spin one-half anionic state. We reveal a correlation between the appearance of a Kondo resonance in the differential conductance spectroscopy and concurrent characteristic changes captured by the TERS measurements. Through a detailed investigation of various adsorbed and tip-contacted PTCDA scenarios, we infer that the Raman scattering on the suspended PTCDA is resonant with a higher excited state. Theoretical simulation of the vibrational spectra enables a precise assignment of the individual TERS peaks to high-symmetry Ag modes, including the fingerprints of the observed spin state. These findings highlight the potential of TERS in capturing complex interactions between charge, spin, and photophysical properties in nanoscale molecular systems, and suggest a pathway for designing spin-optical devices using organic molecules.

Abstract:The detection of vibrational excitations of individual molecules on surfaces by scanning tunneling spectroscopy does not obey strict selection rules but rather propensity rules. The experimental verification of these is challenging because it requires the independent variation of specific parameters, such as the electronic structure, while keeping the vibrational modes the same. Here, we make use of the versatile self-assembled structures of Fe-tetra-pyridyl-porphyrin molecules on a Au(111) surface. These exhibit different energy-level alignments of the frontier molecular orbitals, thus allowing the correlation of electronic structure and detection of vibrations. We identify up to seven vibrational modes in the tunneling spectra of the molecules in some of the arrangements, whereas we observe none in other structures. We find that the presence of vibrational excitations and their distribution along the molecule correlates with the observation of energetically low-lying molecular states. This correlation allows to explain the different numbers of vibrational signatures for molecules embedded within different structures as well as the bias asymmetry of the vibrational intensities within an individual molecule. Our observations are in agreement with a resonant enhancement of vibrations by the virtual excitation of electronic states.
Tip-enhanced strong coupling spectroscopy, imaging, and control of a single quantum emitter

Abstract:Optical cavities can enhance and control light-matter interactions. This has recently been extended to the nanoscale, and with single emitter strong coupling regime even at room temperature using plasmonic nano-cavities with deep sub-diffraction-limited mode volumes. However, with emitters in static nano-cavities, this limits the ability to tune coupling strength or to couple different emitters to the same cavity. Here, we present tip-enhanced strong coupling (TESC) spectroscopy, imaging, and control. Based on a nano-cavity formed between a scanning plasmonic antenna-tip and the substrate, by reversibly and dynamically addressing single quantum dots (QDs) we observe mode splitting > 160 meV and anticrossing over a detuning range of ~100 meV, and with sub-nm precision control over the mode volume in the ~1000 nm^3 regime. Our approach, as a new paradigm of nano-cavity quantum-electrodynamics near-field microscopy to induce, probe, and control single-emitter plasmon hybrid quantum states, opens new pathways from opto-electronics to quantum information science.

Abstract:Here we show scanning tunnelling microscopy (STM), non-contact atomic force microscopy (AFM) and inelastic electron tunnelling spectroscopy (IETS) measurements on organic molecule with a CO- terminated tip at 5K. The high-resolution contrast observed simultaneously in all channels unam- biguously demonstrates the common imaging mechanism in STM/AFM/IETS, related to the lateral bending of the CO-functionalized tip. The IETS spectroscopy reveals that the submolecular con- trast at 5K consists of both renormalization of vibrational frequency and variation of the amplitude of IETS signal. This finding is also corroborated by first principles simulations. We extend accord- ingly the probe-particle AFM/STM/IETS model to include these two main ingredients necessary to reproduce the high-resolution IETS contrast. We also employ the first principles simulations to get more insight into different response of frustrated translation and rotational modes of CO-tip during imaging.

Abstract:Recently, the family of high-resolution scanning probe imaging techniques using decorated tips has been complimented by a method based on inelastic electron tunneling spectroscopy (IETS). The new technique resolves the inner structure of organic molecules by mapping the vibrational energy of a single carbonmonoxide (CO) molecule positioned at the apex of a scanning tunnelling microscope (STM) tip. Here, we explain high-resolution IETS imaging by extending the model developed earlier for STM and atomic force microscopy (AFM) imaging with decorated tips. In particular, we show that the tip decorated with CO acts as a nanoscale sensor that changes the energy of the CO frustrated translation in response to the change of the local curvature of the surface potential. In addition, we show that high resolution AFM, STM and IETS-STM images can deliver information about intramolecular charge transfer for molecules deposited on a~surface. To demonstrate this, we extended our numerical model by taking into the account the electrostatic force acting between the decorated tip and surface Hartree potential.

Abstract:Real-time visualization of molecular transformations is a captivating yet challenging frontier of ultrafast optical science and physical chemistry. While ultrafast x-ray and electron diffraction methods can achieve the needed subangstrom spatial resolution, their temporal resolution is still limited to hundreds of femtoseconds, much longer than the few femtoseconds required to probe real-time molecular dynamics. Here, we show that high-order harmonics generated by intense femtosecond lasers can be used to image molecules with few-ten-attosecond temporal resolution and few-picometer spatial resolution. This is achieved by exploiting the sensitive dependence of molecular recombination dipole moment to the geometry of the molecule at the time of harmonic emission. In a proof-of-principle experiment, we have applied this high-harmonic structure imaging (HHSI) method to monitor the structural rearrangement in NH_{3}, ND_{3}, and N_{2} from one to a few femtoseconds after the molecule is ionized by an intense laser. Our findings establish HHSI as an effective approach to resolve molecular dynamics with unprecedented spatiotemporal resolution, which can be extended to trace photochemical reactions in the future.
FMO-LC-TDDFTB method for excited states of large molecular assemblies in the strong light-matter coupling regime

Abstract:We present a new methodology to calculate the strong light-matter coupling between photonic modes in microcavities and large molecular aggregates that consist of hundreds of molecular fragments. To this end, we combine our fragment molecular orbital long-range corrected time-dependent density functional tight-binding methodology with a generalized Tavis-Cummings Hamiltonian. We employ an excitonic Hamiltonian, which is built from a quasi-diabatic basis that is constructed from locally excited and charge-transfer states of all molecular fragments. In order to calculate polaritonic states, we extend our quasi-diabatic basis to include photonic states of a microcavity and derive and implement the couplings between the locally excited states and the cavity states and built a Tavis-Cummings Hamiltonian that incorporates the intermolecular excitonic couplings. Subsequently, we demonstrate the capability of our methodology by simulating the influence of the electric field polarization on the polaritonic spectra for a tetracene aggregate of 125 monomers. Furthermore, we investigate the dependence of the splitting of the upper and lower polaritonic branches on the system size by comparing the spectra of three different tetracene clusters. In addition, we investigate the polariton dispersion of a large tetracene aggregate for electric field polarizations in the x, y and z direction. Our new methodology can facilitate the future study of exciton dynamics in complex molecular systems, which consist of up to hundreds of molecules, that are influenced by strong light-matter coupling to microcavities.

Spatial Imaging of Individual Vibronic States in the Interior of Single Molecules

Abstract:Selective excitations of specific vibronic modes in position space are realized in single naphthalocyanine molecules adsorbed on an ultrathin alumina film by a scanning tunneling microscope at low temperature. Distinct spatial distributions are imaged for the different vibronic modes, which are in accordance with spectra recorded over different points of the molecule and its orbital structure. These distinct vibronic images, together with the differential conductance images and calculated molecular orbitals, lead to vibrational excitations that are associated with the doubly degenerate lowest unoccupied molecular orbitals (LUMO)--LUMO-α and LUMO-β. These results reveal the presence of different molecular conformations on the surface and the nature of the electron-vibrational coupling.

Abstract:Tip-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (TERS) is a powerful surface analysis technique that can provide subnanometer-resolved images of nanostructures with site-specific chemical fingerprints. However, due to the limitation of weak Raman signals and the resultant difficulty in achieving TERS imaging with good signal-to-noise ratios (SNRs), the conventional single-peak analysis is unsuitable for distinguishing complex molecular architectures at the subnanometer scale. Here we demonstrate that the combination of subnanometer-resolved TERS imaging and advanced multivariate analysis can provide an unbiased panoramic view of the chemical identity and spatial distribution of different molecules on surfaces, yielding high-quality chemical images despite limited SNRs in individual pixel-level spectra. This methodology allows us to exploit the full power of TERS imaging and unambiguously distinguish between adjacent molecules with a resolution of ~0.4 nm, as well as to resolve submolecular features and the differences in molecular adsorption configurations. Our results provide a promising methodology that promotes TERS imaging as a routine analytical technique for the analysis of complex nanostructures on surfaces. Advanced multivariate analysis can dramatically improve the chemical sensing capabilities of tip-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (TERS). A powerful surface analysis technique, TERS is hampered by inherently weak Raman signals, which have not permitted complex molecular architectures to be distinguished at the subnanometer scale. By employing advanced multivariate analysis, Song Jiang and co-workers from the University of Science and Technology of China used TERS to unambiguously identify adjacent molecules on a surface. The scheme’s spatial resolution of just 0.4 nanometers opens up the possibility of gathering information on a submolecular scale, such as mapping local vibrations and structural units within a single molecule. Experiments with a mixture of ZnTPP and H2TBPP molecules adsorbed on the edge of a silver step confirmed the advantages of the multivariate approach over conventional single-peak spectral analysis.
