Abstract:Organic room-temperature phosphorescent (RTP) materials exhibiting reversible changes in optical properties upon exposure to external stimuli have shown great potential in diverse optoelectronic fields. Particularly, dynamic manipulation of response behaviors for such materials is of fundamental significance, but it remains a formidable challenge. Herein, a series of RTP polymers were prepared by incorporating phosphorescent rotors into polymer backbone, and these materials show color-tunable persistent luminescence upon excitation at different wavelengths. Experimental results and theoretical calculations revealed that the various molecular conformations of monomers are responsible for the excitation wavelength-dependent (Ex-De) RTP behavior. Impressively, after gaining insights into the underlying mechanism, dynamic control of Ex-De RTP behavior was achieved through thermal energy driven molecular rotations of monomers. Eventually, we demonstrate the practical applications of these amorphous polymers in anti-counterfeiting areas. These findings open new opportunities for the control of response behaviors of smart-responsive RTP materials through external stimuli rather than conventional covalent modification method.
Exciton- and Polaron-Induced Reversible Dipole Reorientation in Amorphous Organic Semiconductor Films

Abstract:The quantum efficiency of organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) employing thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) highly depends on the S-1-T-1 energy gaps (Delta E-ST) of the emitters. However, the Delta E-ST values determined in solution or even in organic thin films through a static approach continuously fail in predicting device performance. Herein, by systematically investigating the time-resolved emission spectra of several TADF emitters in various matrixes and the dielectric spectra of the matrixes, it is demonstrated that molecular organic semiconductors can undergo reversible and irreversible spatial rearrangements within a few dozen nanoseconds in an electric field created by a polarized charge-transfer state and can in turn lower the excited-state energy. In contrast to solution solvation, the polarized microenvironment in films can last for tens of microseconds or more after removing the electric field, leading to a narrowing and a broader distribution of Delta E-ST. In TADF OLEDs, the large dipole moment of emitter-based polarons is key for reducing the Delta E-ST of subsequently generated excitons by inducing the dipole orientation of the surrounding molecules. Understanding the so-called solid-state solvation with a dynamic approach can provide deeper insight into the working mechanism in organic semiconductor devices.
Excimer Formation in Zinc-phthalocyanine Revealed using Ultrafast Electron Diffraction

Abstract:The formation of excited dimer states, so called excimers, is an important phenomenon in many organic molecular semiconductors. In contrast to Frenkel exciton-polaron excited states, an excimer is long-lived and energetically low-lying due to stabilization resulting from a substantial reorganization of the inter-molecular geometry. In this letter, we show that ultrafast electron diffraction can follow the dynamics of solid-state excimer formation in polycrystalline thin films of a molecular semiconductor, revealing both the key reaction modes and the eventual structure of the emitting state. We study the prototypical organic semiconductor zinc-phthalocyanine (ZnPc) in its crystallographic $\alpha$-phase as a model excimeric system. We show, that the excimer forms in a two-step process starting with a fast dimerization ($\lesssim 0.4\, \text{ps}$) followed by a subsequent slow shear-twist motion ($14\, \text{ps}$) leading to an alignment of the $\pi$-systems of the involved monomers. Furthermore, we show that while the same excimer geomtry is present in partially fluorinated derivatives of ZnPc, the formation kinematics slow down with increasing level of fluorination.

Abstract:A complex interplay of structural, electronic, and vibrational degrees of freedom underpins the fate of molecular excited states. Organic assemblies exhibit a myriad of excited-state decay processes, such as symmetry-breaking charge separation (SB-CS), excimer (EX) formation, singlet fission, and energy transfer. Recent studies of cofacial and slip-stacked perylene-3,4:9,10-bis(dicarboximide) (PDI) multimers demonstrate that slight variations in core substituents and H- or J-type aggregation can determine whether the system follows an SB-CS pathway or an EX one. However, questions regarding the relative importance of structural properties and molecular vibrations in driving the excited-state dynamics remain. Here, we use a combination of two-dimensional electronic spectroscopy, femtosecond stimulated Raman spectroscopy, and quantum chemistry computations to compare the photophysics of two PDI dimers. The dimer with 1,7-bis(pyrrolidin-1'-yl) substituents (5PDI2) undergoes ultrafast SB-CS from a photoexcited mixed state, while the dimer with bis-1,7-(3',5'-di-t-butylphenoxy) substituents (PPDI2) rapidly forms an EX state. Examination of their quantum beating features reveals that SB-CS in 5PDI2 is driven by the collective vibronic coupling of two or more excited-state vibrations. In contrast, we observe signatures of low-frequency vibrational coherence transfer during EX formation by PPDI2, which aligns with several previous studies. We conclude that key electronic and structural differences between 5PDI2 and PPDI2 determine their markedly different photophysics.

Abstract:Perylene diimide (PDI) dimers and higher aggregates are key components in organic molecular photonics and photovoltaic devices, supporting singlet fission and symmetry breaking charge separation. Detailed understanding of their excited states is thus important. This has proven challenging because interchromophoric coupling is a strong function of dimer architecture. Recently, a macrocyclic PDI dimer was reported in which excitonic coupling could be turned on and off simply by changing the solvent. This presents a useful case where coupling is modified without synthetic changes to tune supramolecular structure. Here we present a detailed study of solvent dependent excited state dynamics in this dimer by means of coherent multidimensional spectroscopy. Spectral analysis resolves the different coupling strengths, which are consistent with solvent dependent changes in dimer conformation. The strongly coupled conformer forms an excimer within 300 fs. The low-frequency Raman active modes recovered from two-dimensional electronic spectra reveal frequencies characteristic of exciton coupling. These are assigned to modes modulating the coupling from the corresponding DFT calculations. Further analysis reveals a time dependent frequency during excimer formation. Analysis of two-dimensional “beatmaps” reveals features in the coupled dimer which are not predicted by the displaced harmonic oscillator model and are assigned to vibronic coupling.

Abstract:The photoinduced intramolecular excited-state energy-transfer (EET) process in conjugated polymers has received a great deal of research interest because of its important role in the light harvesting and energy transport of organic photovoltaic materials in photoelectric devices. In this work, the silylene-bridged biphenyl and stilbene (SBS) system was chosen as a simplified model system to obtain physical insight into the photoinduced intramolecular energy transfer between the different building units of the SBS copolymer. In the SBS system, the vinylbiphenyl and vinylstilbene moieties serve as the donor (D) unit and the acceptor (A) unit, respectively. The ultrafast excited-state dynamics of the SBS system was investigated from the point of view of nonadiabatic dynamics with the surface-hopping method at the TDDFT level. The first two excited states (S1 and S2) are characterized by local excitations at the acceptor (vinylstilbene) and donor (vinylbiphenyl) units, respectively. Ultrafast S2-S1 decay is responsible for the intramolecular D-A excitonic energy transfer. The geometric distortion of the D moiety play an essential role in this EET process, whereas the A moiety remains unchanged during the nonadiabatic dynamics simulation. The present work provides a direct dynamical approach to understand the ultrafast intramolecular energy-transfer dynamics in SBS copolymers and other similar organic photovoltaic copolymers.
Pressure-Dependent Relaxation Dynamics of Excitons in Conjugated Polymer Film

Abstract:Conjugated polymers have been widely used in polymer solar cells (PSC). The transient absorption spectra on conjugated polymer poly{2,7'-9,9-dioctylfluorene-alt-5-diethylhexyl-3,6-bis(5-bromothiophen-2-yl)pyrrolo[3,4-c]pyrrole-1,4-dione} (PDPP-F) film are measured under pressure, and the pressure-dependent relaxation dynamics of excitons in PDPP-F film are investigated. It is found that the relaxation dynamics of excitons under high pressure could be divided into a fast relaxation process that is attributed to the exciton-exciton annihilation (EEA) and a slow relaxation process that is assigned to the diffusion of free excitons. As a result of pressure-induced delocalization of excitons and extension of lifetime of free excitons, both the EEA process and the free exciton diffusion are enhanced upon compression. Moreover, the delocalization extent of excitons under different pressures is quantitatively calculated, indicating that the scale of exciton delocalization at 30 GPa is tripled compared with that at 1 atm. These results are very important to understand the photophysical property of polymer and to optimize the efficiency of PSC.
Exciton fission via ultrafast long-range resonant tunnelling in organic photovoltaic diodes

Abstract:We present an exciton/lattice model of the electronic dynamics of primary photoexcitations in a polymeric semiconductor heterojunction which includes both polymer pi-stacking, energetic disorder, and phonon relaxation. Results from our model are consistent with a wide range of recent experimental evidence that excitons decay directly to well-defined polarons on a sub-100 fs timescale, which is substantially faster than exciton relaxation processes. Averaging over multiple samples, we find that as the interfacial offset is increased, a substantial fraction of the density of electronic states in the energy region about the initial exciton carries significant charge-transfer character with two charges separated in the outer regions of the model lattice. The results indicate a slight increase in the density of such current-producing states if the region close to the interface is more disordered. However, since their density of states overlaps the excitation line-shape of the primary exciton, we show that it is possible that the exciton can decay directly into current-producing states via tunneling on an ultrafast time-scale. We find this process to be independent of the location of energetic disorder in the system, and hence we expect exciton fission via resonant tunnelling to be a ubiquitous feature of these systems.

Ultrafast Spectroscopic Studies of Excited State Relaxation and Electron Injection in Organic Dye-Sensitized Solar Cells

Abstract:Unlocking the dynamics of the evolution of the excited state at the complicated titania/dye/ electrolyte interface in organic dye-sensitized solar cells is crucial to provide a basis for the rational design of low-energy-gap organic photosensitizers. By constructing two organic donor-acceptor dyes composed of benzothiadiazole-benzoic acid (BTBA) and pyridothiadiazole-benzoic acid (PTBA) as electron acceptors, we have identified the images of multiple-step relaxations of the excited state and multiple-state electron injections at the titania/dye/electrolyte interface using ultrafast transient absorption spectroscopic measurements in conjunction with theoretical simulations. Density functional theory and time-dependent density functional theory calculations indicate that there should be torsion-induced excited state relaxations from an optically generated "hot" excited state to the equilibrium excited state characteristic of a more planar conjugated backbone and a quinonoid structure for dye molecules on the titania surface, suggesting the probable presence of multiple-state electron injections at the titania/dye/electrolyte interface. In virtue of a target analysis of femtosecond transient absorption spectra, we have found that the dye with PTBA features a much lower overall electron injection yield with respect to the dye with BTBA owing to the sluggish electron injection and short lifetime of the excited state, accounting for a lower maximum of external quantum efficiencies of the device made from the dye with PTBA as an acceptor.

Abstract:The electronic states of poly(9,9-dioctylfluorenyl- alt -bithiophene) pF8T2 on H/Si(100) substrates, prototypical for organic photovoltaics, were investigated by ultrafast photoelectron spectroscopy and by time-resolved fluorescence studies. Occupied and unoccupied electronic states were analysed by ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy (UPS), static and dynamic femtosecond two-photon photoemission (2PPE), and time-correlated single photon counting (TCSPC). Time-resolved measurements allow assessment of population lifetimes of intermediate states. The combination of time-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy and fluorescence excitation allows following the electronic dynamics in excited states from the femtosecond to the nanosecond time scale. For this prototypical material the electron kinetic energy resolved lifetimes range from about a few tens of femtoseconds up to hundreds of picoseconds. After annealing these types of organic thin films the efficiency of organic solar cells usually increases. We show that annealing does not influence the initial ultrafast charge generation processes, but the long-lived states. However, the nanosecond scale fluorescence lifetimes measured by TCSPC are prolonged after annealing, which therefore is identified as the cause of a greater exciton diffusion range and thus is beneficial for charge carrier extraction.

Untargeted Effects in Organic Exciton-Polariton Transient Spectroscopy: A Cautionary Tale

Abstract:Strong light-matter coupling to form exciton- and vibropolaritons is increasingly touted as a powerful tool to alter the fundamental properties of organic materials. It is proposed that these states and their facile tunability can be used to rewrite molecular potential energy landscapes and redirect photophysical pathways, with applications from catalysis to electronic devices. Crucial to their photophysical properties is the exchange of energy between coherent, bright polaritons and incoherent dark states. One of the most potent tools to explore this interplay is transient absorption/reflectance spectroscopy. Previous studies have revealed unexpectedly long lifetimes of the coherent polariton states, for which there is no theoretical explanation. Applying these transient methods to a series of strong-coupled organic microcavities, we recover similar long-lived spectral effects. Based on transfer-matrix modelling of the transient experiment, we find that virtually the entire photoresponse results from photoexcitation effects other than the generation of polariton states. Our results suggest that the complex optical properties of polaritonic systems make them especially prone to misleading optical signatures, and that more challenging high-time-resolution measurements on high-quality microcavities are necessary to uniquely distinguish the coherent polariton dynamics.

Perturbation of Exciton Aggregate Coupling by Optical Excitation in Crystalline Perfluoropentacene Films

Abstract:Carrier multiplication by singlet exciton fission enhances photovoltaic conversion efficiencies in organic solids. This decay of one singlet exciton into two triplet states promises to overcome the Shockley-Queisser limit as up to two electrons may be harvested per absorbed photon. Intermolecular coupling is deemed mandatory for both, singlet exciton fission and a band-like transport. Such a coupling is manifested, $e.g.$, by the Davydov-splitting of the lowest-energy exciton transition in crystalline organic solids. For the model system perfluoropentacene, the corresponding transitions in the experimental, polarisation-resolved absorption spectra are identified by theoretical calculations based on the concept of H- and J- aggregation. Optical injection into the first vibronic progression of the fundamental exciton transitions significantly perturbs the higher-energy transitions that are associated to H-type aggregates of the $S_0 \rightarrow S_3$ transition during and following efficient singlet exciton fission. These findings underline the necessity for efficient carrier extraction as triplet accumulation may be detrimental to both, singlet exciton fission and any potentially band like transport. More generally, our observations indicate that electronic excitations can perturb the electronic band structure in organic crystals and highlight their correlated nature by potentially distorting the lattice.

Abstract:We have used the femtosecond transient photomodulation spectroscopy in a broad spectral range for studying the ultrafast dynamics of the primary photoexcitations in various polymers. An emerging universal picture is presented based on the C2h point group symmetry of the polymer chain, where the electron-electron interaction is dominant. In this picture the 1Bu exciton is the primary photoexcitation. However, the 1Bu exciton may decay within a few hundreds fs to the more stable 'dark' exciton (2Ag) in 'dark' polymers where the photoluminescence (PL) efficiency is extremely low. In contrast, in polymers with high PL emission efficiency, the 1Bu exciton is the lowest excited state, and consequently may show stimulated emission that can be utilized for laser action.

Abstract:State-of-the-art organic photovoltaic (OPV) devices are based on Y-type acceptors, with power conversion efficiencies now exceeding 20%. However, the basic structure-photophysics-performance relationship of these materials remains unclear, hindering rational material development and engineering. Here we investigate a broad range of Y-type acceptors using a combination of experimental and theoretical studies. We first show that a transient electroabsorption (TEA) signal is universal in neat Y-type acceptor films upon photoexcitation, which is caused by the formation of intermolecular charge-transfer (ICT) states in tightly packed molecular aggregates (i.e. ordered regions of the film). Tracking the TEA signal growth dynamics can monitor the migration of excitons from disordered to ordered regions in various Y-type acceptor films on the sub-picosecond timescale. Importantly, our results reveal that Y-type acceptors with moderately reduced intermolecular interaction strength can generally achieve faster exciton migration, better structural uniformity and higher device performance, thereby providing insights for future OPV material development and engineering. Y-type acceptors exhibiting faster migration (shorter tau) of local excitons (LEs) in disordered regions of aggregates to intermolecular charge-transfer (ICT) excitons in ordered regions can achieve higher efficiencies in organic solar cells.
Temporal fluctuations in excimer-like interactions between pi-conjugated chromophores

Abstract:Inter- or intramolecular coupling processes between chromophores such as excimer formation or H- and J-aggregation are crucial to describing the photophysics of closely packed films of conjugated polymers. Such coupling is highly distance dependent, and should be sensitive to both fluctuations in the spacing between chromophores as well as the actual position on the chromophore where the exciton localizes. Single-molecule spectroscopy reveals these intrinsic fluctuations in well-defined bi-chromophoric model systems of cofacial oligomers. Signatures of interchromophoric interactions in the excited state - spectral red-shifting and broadening, and a slowing of photoluminescence decay - correlate with each other but scatter strongly between single molecules, implying an extraordinary distribution in coupling strengths. Furthermore, these excimer-like spectral fingerprints vary with time, revealing intrinsic dynamics in the coupling strength within one single dimer molecule, which constitutes the starting point for describing a molecular solid. Such spectral sensitivity to sub-Angstrom molecular dynamics could prove complementary to conventional FRET-based molecular rulers.

Abstract:The success of organic–inorganic perovskites in optoelectronics is dictated by the complex interplay between various underlying microscopic phenomena. The structural dynamics of organic cations and the inorganic sublattice after photoexcitation are hypothesized to have a direct effect on the material properties, thereby affecting the overall device performance. Here, we use ultrafast heterodyne-detected two-dimensional (2D) electronic spectroscopy to reveal impulsively excited vibrational modes of methylammonium (MA) lead iodide perovskite, which drive the structural distortion after photoexcitation. Vibrational analysis of the measured data allows us to monitor the time-evolved librational motion of the MA cation along with the vibrational coherences of the inorganic sublattice. Wavelet analysis of the observed vibrational coherences reveals the coherent generation of the librational motion of the MA cation within ∼300 fs complemented with the coherent evolution of the inorganic skeletal motion. To rationalize this observation, we employed the configuration interaction singles (CIS), which support our experimental observations of the coherent generation of librational motions in the MA cation and highlight the importance of the anharmonic interaction between the MA cation and the inorganic sublattice. Moreover, our advanced theoretical calculations predict the transfer of the photoinduced vibrational coherence from the MA cation to the inorganic sublattice, leading to reorganization of the lattice to form a polaronic state with a long lifetime. Our study uncovers the interplay of the organic cation and inorganic sublattice during formation of the polaron, which may lead to novel design principles for the next generation of perovskite solar cell materials.This article has not yet been cited by other publications.

Abstract:We used a variety of optical probe techniques including broadband femtosecond transient and continuous wave (cw) photomodulation spectroscopies and electroabsorption for studying the photophysics in two typical pi-conjugated polymers, namely regio-regular poly (3-hexyl thiophene) (RR-P3HT) with self-organized p-stacked two-dimensional lamellae, and 2-methoxy-5-(2'-ethylhexyloxy) poly(p-para-phenylene-vinylene) (MEH-PPV) with amorphous nanomorphology; both polymers in pristine and blend with fullerene molecules. In the pristine forms we identified singlet excitons as the primary photoexcitations, having typical photoinduced absorption (PA) band that is correlated with stimulated emission. In contrast, in polymer/fullerene blends the photogenerated excitons quickly decay giving rise to a novel photoexcitation species, and the stimulated emission is absent. For the blends we provide strong evidence for the existence of charge transfer complex (CTC) manifold that is formed inside the optical gap of the polymer and fullerene constituents, which is clearly revealed in the electro-absorption spectrum. Because the lowest energy CTC lies below the optical gap then it is possible to directly generate polarons in the blends without involving intrachain excitons in the polymer phase, when using below gap pump excitation. When using excellent quality materials we present evidence that the CTC states are populated in RR-P3HT/fullerene blend within 20 ps following exciton photogeneration in the polymer chains; but no charge polarons are generated on their expense up to similar to 2 ns. Interestingly the CTC states are photogenerated much faster in D-A blends having smaller domain size such as in regio-random P3HT/PCBM and MEH-PPV/C-60; however the CTCs do not easily dissociate in these blends because of the large binding energy. Our findings indicate that the CTC state and film morphology play a crucial role in carrier photogeneration in donor-acceptor blends. More thorough investigation of the CTC and its interaction with free polaron excitations may improve the power conversion efficiency of organic solar cells and drive the development of novel photoactive materials.
Unraveling Excited-State Dynamics in a Polyfluorene-Perylenediimide Copolymer

Abstract:Insight into the exciton dynamics occurring in a polyfluorene-perylenediimide (PF-PDI) copolymer with a reaction mixture ratio of 100 fluorene units to 1 N,N'-bis(phenyl)-1,6,7,12-tetra(p-tert-octylphenoxy)-perylene-3,4,9,10-tetracarboxylic acid diimide (PDI) is presented here. Time-correlated single photon counting and femtosecond transient absorption spectroscopy measurements on the PF-PDI copolymer have been employed to investigate the excited-state properties of the polyfluorene subunit where the exciton is localized (PF) and the incorporated PDI chromophore. The experimental results were compared with those obtained from a polyfluorene polymer (model PF) and a N,N'-bis(2,6-diisopropylphenyl)-1,6,7,12-tetra(p-tert-octylphenoxy)-perylene-3,4,9,10-tetracarboxylic acid diimide (model PDI) which were used as reference compounds. Because of the high polydispersity of the PF-PDI copolymer, there is a polymer fraction present that contains no PDI chromophores (polyfluorene polymer fraction (PF polymer fraction)), and wide-field imaging of single polymers chains of the synthesized PF-PDI copolymer was used to estimate this PF polymer fraction. Following the primary excitation of the PF in the PF-PDI copolymer, energy hopping between PF's can occur. A fraction of the energy of the absorbed photons will be transferred to a PDI chromophore via energy transfer from a PF. In a polar solvent, a charge transfer state having the S(1) of the PDI moiety as a precursor state is found to form with high efficiency on a nanosecond time scale. The data suggest that a fraction of the absorbed energy is directed, transferred, and used in charge separation, providing a clear view of a multistep mechanism of exciton dissociation into charges.
