Abstract:Experimental and theoretical methods were used to study newly synthesized thiophene-pi-conjugated donor-acceptor compounds, which were found to exhibit efficient intramolecular charge-transfer emission in polar solvents with relatively large Stokes shifts and strong solvatochromism. To gain insight into the solvatochromic behavior of these compounds, the dependence of the spectra on solvent polarity was studied on the basis of Lippert-Mataga models. We found that intramolecular charge transfer in these donor-acceptor systems is significantly dependent on the electron-withdrawing substituents at the thienyl 2-position. The dependence of the absorption and emission spectra of these compounds in methanol on the concentration of trifluoroacetic acid was used to confirm intramolecular charge-transfer emission. Moreover, the calculated absorption and emission energies, which are in accordance with the experimental values, suggested that fluorescence can be emitted from different geometric conformations. In addition, a novel S(2) fluorescence phenomenon for some of these compounds was also be observed. The fluorescence excitation spectra were used to confirm the S(2) fluorescence. We demonstrate that S(2) fluorescence can be explained by the calculated energy gap between the S(2) and S(1) states of these molecules. Furthermore, nonlinear optical behavior of the thiophene-pi-conjugated compound with diethylcyanomethylphosphonate substituents was predicted in theory.
Intramolecular Triplet Energy Transfer in Donor-Acceptor Molecules Linked by A Crown Ether Bridge

Abstract:Bichromophoric compounds BP-C-NP and BP-C-NBD were synthesized with benzophenone chromophore (BP) as the donor, and 2-naphthyl (NP) and norbornadiene group (NBD) as the acceptor, respectively. Their intramolecular triplet energy transfer was examined. The bridges linking the donor and acceptors in these molecules involve a crown ether moiety complexing a sodium ion. Phosphorescence quenching, flash photolysis and photosensitized isomerization experiments indicate that intramolecular triplet energy transfer occurs with rate constants of about 3.3 x 10(5) and 4.8 x 10(5) s(-1) and efficiencies of about 33 and 42 % for BP-C-NP and BP-C-NBD, respectively. Theoretical calculations indicate that these molecules adopt conformations below room temperature which allow their two-end chromophores conducive to through-space energy transfer.

Abstract:In this study, a donor acceptor type molecule based on quinacridone (QA) and diketopyrrolopyrrole (DPP) was synthesized. Through the grafting of DPP-QA molecule on the surface of ZnO nanorod, hybrid nanoconnposite DPP-QA/ZnO was obtained. The fluorescence of DPP-QA was significantly quenched in the hybrid DPP-QA/ZnO nanocomposite. The properties of photoinduced electron transfer in the studied system were investigated by time-resolved fluorescence spectroscopy and femtosecond transient absorption spectroscopy in the visible region. It was found that the electron transfer (ET) time constant in the hybrid system is 1.0 x 109 s(-1) and the quantum yield for ET is 75%. It provides a model system to understand the role of inorganic semicon ductors in the organic/inorganic hybrid photoelectrical and photovoltaic devices.
Control of Intramolecular Electron Transfer in Perylene Dihydrazides and Perylene Diimides: A Comparative Study by Time-Resolved Spectroscopy

Abstract:Electron transfer (ET) in molecular donor-acceptor dye systems is crucial for charge transport in organic semiconductors. Classically, ET rates should decrease with increasing donor-acceptor distance while the microscopic mechanism is more complex and shows intricate dependencies on the excitation conditions. In this paper, we introduce highly soluble N,N'-dialkyl perylene dihydrazides (PDH) - perylene dyes with a dialkylamino -NR$_2$ donor functionality directly bonded to both of their imide nitrogen atoms. We compare the PDH electron-transfer dynamics with a group of classical N,N'-bisalkylperylene diimides (PDI) equipped with a -NR$_2$ donor linked to the PDI acceptor core via a varying number of alkylene -(CH$_2$)- spacer groups, thus at distinctively different distance. Special physicochemical design features of our study objects include: i) amine moieties as donor group to minimize spin-orbit coupling; ii) substitution solely at both imide positions to avoid major impact on HOMO and LUMO levels and distortions of the PDI backbone; iii) control of donor-acceptor separation by non-conjugated alkylene groups to exclude any additional effects due to delocalized $\pi$ electron systems. All materials show non-single-exponential photoluminescence decay dynamics. A rate equation analysis supported by electrochemical and absolute photoluminescence efficiency measurements yields evidence for efficient intersystem-crossing without heavy elements and reveals that the charge-transfer efficiency across the intramolecular interface strongly depends on the surplus excitation energy.

Abstract:Two phenylene based geometrical/isomeric triplet ortho- and para–dyads ( o –3 and p –3, respectively) were synthesized and fully characterized using advanced photophysical tools and computations. In dyad o –3, the through-space donor-acceptor interactions led to simultaneous triplet energy transfer and charge transfer with identical kinetics. On the other hand, in the dyad p –3, it was found that the phenylene spacer favors a fast triplet energy delocalization over the charge transfer process. Furthermore, analysis of the results from the present investigation indicates that the deactivation of the photo-excited species ( o –3)* occurs through both the intrinsic channel viz. S0←S1 and charge recombination. In the case of dyad p –3, the results indicate that the primary deactivation pathway is self-quenching or triplet-triplet annihilation involving the acceptor unit(s).

Abstract:Diketopyrrolopyrroles are a popular class of electron-withdrawing unit in optoelectronic materials. When combined with electron donating side-chain functional groups such as thiophenes, they form a very broad class of donor-acceptor molecules: thiophene-diketopyrrolopyrroles (TDPPs). Despite their widescale use in biosensors and photovoltaic materials, studies have yet to establish the important link between the electronic structure of the specific TDPP and the critical optical properties. To bridge this gap, ultrafast transient absorption with 22 fs time resolution has been used to explore the photophysics of three prototypical TDPP molecules: a monomer, dimer and polymer in solution. These studies show that the photophysics of these molecular prototypes under visible photoexcitation are determined by just two excited electronic states, having very different electronic characters (one is optically bright, the other dark), their relative energetic ordering and the timescales for internal conversion from one to the other and/or to the ground state. The underlying difference in electronic structure alters the branching between these excited states and their associated dynamics. In turn, these factors dictate the fluorescence quantum yields, which are shown to vary by ~1-2 orders of magnitude across the TDPP prototypes investigated here. The fast non-radiative transfer of molecules from the bright to dark states is mediated by conical intersections. Remarkably, wavepacket signals in the measured transient absorption data carry signatures of the nuclear motions that enable mixing of the electronic-nuclear wavefunction and facilitate non-adiabatic coupling between the bright and dark states.

Abstract:The photoinduced intramolecular excited-state energy-transfer (EET) process in conjugated polymers has received a great deal of research interest because of its important role in the light harvesting and energy transport of organic photovoltaic materials in photoelectric devices. In this work, the silylene-bridged biphenyl and stilbene (SBS) system was chosen as a simplified model system to obtain physical insight into the photoinduced intramolecular energy transfer between the different building units of the SBS copolymer. In the SBS system, the vinylbiphenyl and vinylstilbene moieties serve as the donor (D) unit and the acceptor (A) unit, respectively. The ultrafast excited-state dynamics of the SBS system was investigated from the point of view of nonadiabatic dynamics with the surface-hopping method at the TDDFT level. The first two excited states (S1 and S2) are characterized by local excitations at the acceptor (vinylstilbene) and donor (vinylbiphenyl) units, respectively. Ultrafast S2-S1 decay is responsible for the intramolecular D-A excitonic energy transfer. The geometric distortion of the D moiety play an essential role in this EET process, whereas the A moiety remains unchanged during the nonadiabatic dynamics simulation. The present work provides a direct dynamical approach to understand the ultrafast intramolecular energy-transfer dynamics in SBS copolymers and other similar organic photovoltaic copolymers.
Rapid Energy Transfer Enabling Control of Emission Polarization in Perylene Bisimide Donor-Acceptor Triads

Abstract:Materials showing rapid intramolecular energy transfer and polarization switching are of interest for both their fundamental photophysics and potential for use in real-world applications. Here, we report two donor-acceptor-donor triad dyes based on perylene-bisimide subunits, with the long axis of the donors arranged either parallel or perpendicular to that of the central acceptor. We observe rapid energy transfer (<2 ps) and effective polarization control in both dye molecules in solution. A distributed-dipole Förster model predicts the excitation energy transfer rate for the linearly arranged triad but severely underestimates it for the orthogonal case. We show that the rapid energy transfer arises from a combination of through-bond coupling and through-space transfer between donor and acceptor units. As they allow energy cascading to an excited state with controllable polarization, these triad dyes show high potential for use in luminescent solar concentrator devices.
Control of electronic and exchange coupling by bridge substituents in donor acceptor triads with triptycene bridges

Abstract:A series of triads, consisting of a triarylamine electron donor and a perylene diimide electron acceptor which were attached to two different wings of a triptycene bridging unit, was investigated concerning the dynamics of photoinduced charge separation and charge recombination processes with a particular focus on the involved spin-chemical aspects. Attaching electron-donating or electron-withdrawing substituents to the third wing of the triptycene bridge allowed tuning the electron transfer processes. These processes were investigated via fs-transient absorption spectroscopy and ns-transient absorption spectroscopy in an external magnetic field. The resulting magnetic field-dependent decay dynamics were analysed and modelled using the stochastic Liouville equation which yielded rate constants for the charge recombination and the exchange energy. In combination with a diabatic rate theory and Anderson's perturbative treatment of the exchange energy, these data gave a complete set of rate constants for charge separation and charge recombination from which the diverse electronic couplings between the involved states were derived. These couplings depend linearly on the inverse energy of virtual triptycene bridge states which allows tuning the electron transfer dynamics by modifying the triptycene bridge.

Abstract:Photo-induced charge separation (CS) and charge recombination (CR) are crucial for molecular systems used in artificial photosynthesis, photovoltaics, and photocatalysis, and these processes are also important for fundamental photochemical studies. This review article focuses on the recent developments in CS/CR, long-lived charge transfer (CT) state formation, and CR-induced intersystem crossing (ISC) in organic molecular systems, ranging from discussions on the molecular structural features dictating the kinetics and thermodynamics of CS/CR and electron spin transport, as well as the spectroscopies used for the characterization of the CS/CR and the CR-induced ISC. Emphases are put on the molecular design rationales, from the point of view of organic chemists, to achieve fast and efficient CS but slow CR, as such to access the long-lived CT state. The roles of the electron spin in controlling the CS, CR and formation of the long-lived CT state are discussed with exemplars. Time-resolved electron paramagnetic resonance (TREPR) spectroscopy for characterization of the charge and electron spin transport in the CS, CR and ISC processes is introduced.

Abstract:Modulating charge transfer (CT) interactions between donor and acceptor molecules may give rise to unique dynamic changes in physicochemical properties, exhibiting great importance in supramolecular chemistry and materials science. In this work, we demonstrate the first instance of reversible photomodulation of donor-acceptor (D-A) CT interaction in the solid state.Pyridinium-based chromophore featuring π-conjugated D-A structures can not only function as a good electron acceptor to undergo photoinduced electron transfer (ET) or engage in intermolecular CT interaction, but also exhibit unique dual emission depending on the excitation wavelengths. The rotatable C-C single bonds within D-A pairs enhance the tunability of molecular structure. Through the synergy of a photoinduced ET and an excited-state conformational change, the intermolecular CT interaction can be switched on and off by alternate light irradiation to enables reversibly modulation of the affinity between donor and acceptor molecules, accompanied by visual color switching and fluorescence on-off as feedback signals.

Abstract:The Solution photophysical properties of two conjugated dithienothiopliene (DTT)-perylene bisimide (PBI) systems-a polymer, poly {[N,N'-bis(2-decyl-tetradecyl)-3,4,9,10-perylene diimide-1,7-diyl]-alt-(dithieno[3,2-b:2',3'-dithiophene-2,6-diyl)}, and a small molecule, 1,7-bis(dithieno[3,2-b:2',3'-d]thiophene-2-yl)-N,N'-bis(2-decyl-tetradecyl)-3,4,9,10-perylene diimide-in Solution have been investigated. Strong quenching of the fluorescence of the PBI moiety was observed in both DTT-PBI systems, suggesting the possibility of an efficient intramolecular electron-transfer process. The kinetics of photoinduced electron transfer in the DTT-PBI polymer and monomer in solutions were explored by femtosecond time-resolved transient absorption spectra. It was found that both the rates of charge separation and charge recombination in the DTT-PBI polymer were approximately double those in the small molecule. This indicates that electronic Coupling plays an important role in the electron-transfer process in a polymer system.
Molecular Structure, Quantum Coherence and Solvent Effects on the Ultrafast Electron Transport in BODIPY--C$_{60}$ Derivatives

Abstract:Molecular systems containing donor-bridge-acceptor sites or molecular antennas constitute promising candidates for organic photovoltaic device implementation. Photo-induced electron transfer in multi-chromophore molecular systems is defined by a subtle interaction between the donor and the molecular bridge, and by the system-solvent coupling. Here, we address the computation of quantum properties such as population inversion and electron transfer in molecular photo-systems composed of fulleroisoxazoline, fulleropyrrolidine, BODIPY and Zn-porphyrin, as well as their system-solvent ultrafast dynamics. The molecular complexes are modelled as two- and three-site systems, and we use the density functional theory (DFT) for obtaining the site energies required in the construction of the open system diabatic Hamiltonians relevant to the computation of the electron transfer. The site energies and electronic couplings are calculated by using a continuous polarizable model that allow for the analysis of different solvent environments, and the site-to-site couplings are computed by means of the generalized Mulliken Hush method at the DFT level. We find that the stabilization energy of the charge transfer states exhibit a significant variation for a compound embedded in different polar environments, and thus the effect due to the solvent has been analyzed for the specific cases of Methanol, THF and Toluene. We show that the incorporation of a molecular bridge generates the creation of an intermediate state that plays a crucial role in the charge transfer process by defining $\Lambda$ or cascaded-type energy schemes; this affects the asymptotic value of the transfer rate and favors the cascaded-type configuration.

Abstract:Three donor–acceptor–donor triads 1–3 consisting of tetrathiafulvalene units attached to perylene diimides by flexible and rigid spacers were synthesized and characterized. UV/vis spectroscopic and cyclic voltammetric results indicate that they all show negligible intramolecular charge transfer interaction in their ground states. As compared to the reference compound 21, triads 1–3 display reduced fluorescence and their fluorescence lifetimes are shortened, which is probably owing to the photoinduced electron transfer interactions between the PI units and TTF units. The different photophysical behaviors between 1 and 2 (and 3) might be due to their difference in the spatial separation of TTF and PI units. It is preliminarily found that the steric hindrance of the groups attached to TTF units can affect their photostability.

Abstract:Unraveling the intriguing aspects of the intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) phenomenon of multi‐modular donor‐acceptor‐based push–pull systems are of paramount importance considering their promising applications, particularly in solar energy harvesting and light‐emitting devices. Herein, a series of symmetrical and unsymmetrical donor‐acceptor chromophores 1–6, are designed and synthesized by the Corey‐Fuchs reaction via Evano's condition followed by [2 + 2] cycloaddition retroelectrocyclic ring‐opening reaction with strong electron acceptors TCNE and TCNQ in good yields (~60–85%). The photophysical, electrochemical, and computational studies are investigated to explore the effect of incorporation of strong electron acceptors TCBD and DCNQ with phenothiazine (PTZ) donor. An additional low‐lying broad absorption band extended towards the NIR region suggests charge polarization after the introduction of the electron acceptors in both symmetrical and asymmetrical systems, leading to such strong ICT bands. Relative positions of the frontier orbitals on geometry‐optimized structures further support accessing donor‐acceptor sites responsible for the ICT transitions. Eventually, ultrafast carrier dynamics of the photoinduced species are investigated provided information about different excited states photophysical events including ICT and their associated time profiles.

Abstract:Whereas the photoinduced charge-transfer properties of electron donor-acceptor dyads are now well understood, those of symmetric conjugated architectures containing several identical donor-acceptor branches have started to be scrutinised much more recently. Here, we report on our investigation of the charge-transfer dynamics of a series of formally centrosymmetric triads consisting of a quadrupolar dihydropyrrolopyrrole core substituted with two identical diphenylethynyl lateral branches. Using a combination of time-resolved electronic and vibrational spectroscopies, we show that these molecules exhibit rich excited-state dynamics, which includes three different types of symmetry-breaking charge-transfer processes depending on the nature of the end substituents on the core and branches as well as on the solvent: i) excited-state symmetry breaking within the core; ii) charge transfer from the core to one of the two branches; iii) charge transfer between the two branches. This investigation illustrates how the excited-state properties of symmetric conjugated molecules, including the nature and location of the exciton, can be controlled by fine tuning structural as well as environmental parameters.

Abstract:Herein, we propose a purely‐organic donor‐acceptor (D‐A) molecular triad, with a light‐absorbing polarized molecular wire (PMW) used as a central linkage, as a proof of concept for the possible future applications of the D‐PMW‐A arrangement in molecular photovoltaics. This work builds upon our earlier study on the PMW unit itself, which proved to be highly promising for the ultrafast photogeneration of free charge carriers. Quantum‐chemical calculations performed for the D‐PMW‐A triad at a semi‐empirical level of theory reveal a large electric dipole moment of the system, and show strong charge‐transfer (CT) character of its lowest‐energy excited electronic states, including the S1, which favours efficient dissociation of an exciton initially formed upon the absorption of light. The confirmation for this effect was found with nonadiabatic molecular dynamics simulations, revealing an ultrafast relaxation from higher, bright excited states to S1, completed on a subpicosecond timescale. The architecture of the proposed molecular triad enables its electronic coupling to the surrounding environment through chemical bonds, or noncovalent stacking interactions, which might open way for synthesis of a new class of D‐PMW‐A efficient molecular organic photovoltaic materials.

Photophysical properties of intramolecular charge transfer in two newly synthesized tribranched donor-π-acceptor chromophores

Abstract:The nature of optical excitation and the degree of intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) as well as the dynamics of excited ICT states of two new tribranched donor-pi-acceptor molecules with acceptor-terminated (DA(3)) and acceptor-centered (AD(3)) geometries have been investigated by steady-state and femtosecond time-resolved stimulated emission fluorescence depletion (FS TR-SEP FD) measurements in different polar solvents. The interpretation of the experimental results is based on the comparative investigation of the two D-pi-A compounds with respect to the model monomer counterpart (DA). The larger solvatochromic effects and stronger solvent dependence of spectral properties of DA(3) than that of AD(3) indicate that the excited ICT state of DA(3) possesses higher polarity and larger dipole moments compared to those of AD(3). The similarity of absorption and strong solvent-dependent fluorescence spectra of DA(3) and DA reveals that the excited-state properties of DA(3) are identical to that of the model DA, which localized on one of the branches in DA(3). In contrast to DA(3), the large red shift in the absorption and the small Stokes shift of AD(3) suggest the formation of a delocalized ICT state to a certain extent in the excited state of AD(3). The dynamic behavior of excited ICT states for all three compounds are also investigated by femtosecond time-resolved stimulated emission depletion (FS TR-SEP FD) measurements, where the excited-state relaxations are highly dependent on both solvent polarity and the polar degree of the excited ICT states. Furthermore, the steady-state fluorescence excitation anisotropy shows that the intramolecular excitation transfer among the three disorder-induced localized ICT states with nondegenerate transition dipole moments is involved within DA(3). Compared to DA(3), a substantial red shift in the absorption of AD(3) results from the formation of a delocalized ICT state, where the specific excitation anisotropy spectrum shows that the excitation energy is mainly redistributed between the localized ICT state and the delocalized ICT state.
