Abstract:In this work, an all-solid-state ion-selective electrode, using Ag wire as a substrate, Ag particles as a mid-layer and Ag3AsO4 as a sensitive membrane was prepared for detecting arsenate in aqueous environments. The Ag particles were electrodeposited using a function generator and Schottky diode in AgNO3 solution. Electrochemical polymerisation of the Ag3AsO4 sensitive membrane was achieved via chronoamperometry on an electrochemical workstation. The membrane successfully polymerised on the surface of the electrode, which was demonstrated from scanning electron microscopy images. The energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy results prove that the sensitive membrane is Ag3AsO4, based on the main elements of the sensitive membrane being determined as, As, O and Ag. The detection limit of the electrode was measured as 1.8165 x 10(-6) M with a linear range of 5 x 10(-6)-1 x 10(-1) M, which indicates that the Ag3AsO4 electrode has a wide response range and low detection limit, exhibiting a response time of around 1-2 s with good stability and repeatability. The average potential fluctuation of the electrode in 1 h was 1.48 mV. The electrode shows good anti-interference properties in that it is far more sensitive to arsenate than interfering ions, including sulfate, carbonate, acetate and nitrate. The lifespan of the Ag3AsO4 electrode was confirmed as being more than 80 days, showing great recovery in water sample testing, which shows that the electrode is accurate and can be used for aqueous environmental testing.

Abstract:Arsenic is a toxic contaminant that can be found in drinking water. In this study, the development of an efficient electrode as an electrochemical sensor to detect arsenic( V ) in drinking water is presented. The surface of ZnO nanorods (NRs) synthesized on a Ni-foam substrate was modified by depositing α-Fe 2 O 3 nanoparticles (NPs) to fabricate an electrode for the detection of arsenic( V ) contamination in drinking water. This electrode was synthesized through two separate growth steps: a hydrothermal (ZnO NRs) step followed by the dip-coating method (α-Fe 2 O 3 NPs). The dip-coating method was repeated multiple times, 2 times (ZNF-2), 3 times (ZNF-3) and 4 times (ZNF-4), in order to achieve a uniform coverage of the ZnO NR surface. The electrodes were characterized using XRD, XPS, SEM and UV-vis spectroscopy. The best efficiency among the α-Fe 2 O 3 NP-modified nanorod samples was observed for the 3-time dip-coated ZNF-3 sample, which presented a uniform and homogeneous morphology, as observed from the SEM images, accompanied with the highest oxidation current. The electrochemical performance of the sensor electrodes was tested for a wide range of arsenic( V ) concentrations from 0 to 50 ppb and was monitored using cyclic voltammetry. The results demonstrated a calibration plot that was linear over a concentration range of 0–50 ppb of arsenic( V ), and the regression equation extracted from the calibration curve was found to be y = 0.003 x − 0.6271 (with R 2 = 0.991). The limit of detection (LOD) and limit of quantification (LOQ) were found to be 4.12 ppb and 13.74 ppb, respectively, which are lower than the maximum allowed value recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO) for arsenic in drinking water. This reasonable performance of the ZnO NRs/Ni-foam/α-Fe 2 O 3 NP nanocomposite electrode can be further enhanced, and the electrode can be utilized for efficient arsenic( V ) detection in drinking water.

Abstract:Abstract A very sensitive and ultra‐selective electrochemical sensing device with high conductivity and durability was made using styrene, ethylene glycol dimethacrylate (EGDMA), and functionalised graphene oxide. To construct a mediator‐free, non‐enzymatic sensing probe for the detection of arsenic (v) ions, a recently synthesized sensor was impregnated onto an interdigital electrode (IDE) surface. The newly developed receptors were characterized using Fourier Transmission Infra‐Red (FTIR) and Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM). Under the optimized experimental conditions, sensor showed the lowest detection limit of 0.11 ppb with highest sensitivity (3460 ppb) and a strong linear relationship in the range of 50 ppm–1 ppb of As (v) concentration. The ion imprinting technique is employed to enhance the selectivity of the fabricated sensor. The arsenic sensor is found to be highly selective in the presence of interfering species like AlCl 3 , FeCl 3 , and CoCl 3 etc. The electrochemical sensor proved to be reliable and could be reused after proper storage, also exhibit a high repeatability response and maintaining of 99 % of its initial sensor response for detection after repeated use of one month to six months. This effort showed excellent results in an electrochemical sensor with sensitivity, selectivity, stability, and reversibility for detecting trace quantities of As (v) in real water samples.

Abstract:This paper presents an innovative and stable electrochemical sensor using zeolite and graphite for the reliable and accurate detection of arsenic(V). The zeolite materials were hydrothermally synthesized using coal fly ash and fumed silica by-products under specific environments (1.5 M NaOH, L/(Si/Al) ratio of 40, 120°C, and 24 hours), addressing environmental concerns related to wastes managment. The performance of the zeolite-graphite modified electrode (ZGME) was evaluated using voltammetric and impedance techniques at potentials between 1.2 V and -1.2 V (vs. SCE) and a frequency range of 100 kHz to 10 mHz, respectively. The results showed that the incorporation of zeolite for the first time offered notable advantages, such as affordability, simplicity, and improved oxidation-reduction current and peak resolution for arsenic. The ZGME effectively detected As(V) under neutral conditions using a phosphate buffer solution, with a concentration range of 1 x 10-3 to 1 x 10-6 mol.L-1. The sensor achieved a detection limit of 3 μmol.L-1, a quantification limit of 5 μmol.L-1, a sensitivity of 0.28 μA/μM.cm2, and exhibited good reproducibility, opening up new potential for portable zeolite-based electrochemical sensors. Moreover, this research pioneers the use of zeolite as a graphite modifier.

Abstract:An ultrasensitive electrochemical sensor to detect arsenic (III), a highly toxic heavy metal ion, has been successfully developed. The sensing platform composed of L-cysteine (Lcyst) molecules conjugated to reduced lipoic acid (rLA) capped gold nanoparticles and exhibited an indirect band gap energy (Eg) of 1.96 eV. This is a characteristic of a semiconducting material; metals and semiconducting nanomaterials possess good electrochemical properties due to their trivial band gap energies. Surface ligation of the gold nanoparticles with rLA and Lcyst did not only prevent the nanoparticle agglomeration but also improved the susceptibility of the sensor to bind efficiently to heavy metal ions of interest. The electrochemical properties of the sensing platform were demonstrated by a reversible redox electron transfer reaction of the gold oxides due to the presence of gold nanoparticle clusters on the screen-printed carbon electrode surface. The sensor parameters such as the scan rate, pH and the deposition potential were optimised. The sensor was capable of detecting the arsenic (III) ions at the formal peak potential (Epa°′) of −0.307 ± 0.02 V. Subsequently, the sensor demonstrated a low limit of detection with the magnitude of 3 ppb (i.e. 3SD/SLOPE). The dynamic linear range of the developed sensing platform was between 3 and 25 ppb. The sensor was used to detect As(III) in ground water and demonstrated excellent recoveries in spiked samples.

Abstract:Linker-free magnetite nanoparticles (Fe3O4NPs)-decorated gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) were grown using a new protocol that can be used as a new platform for synthesis of other intact metal–metal oxide nanocomposites without the need for linkers. This minimizes the distance between the metal and metal oxide nanoparticles and ensures the optimum combined effects between the two material interfaces. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy confirmed the successful synthesis of the Fe3O4-Au nanocomposite, without any change in the magnetite phase. Characterization, using transmission electron microscopy (TEM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) spectroscopy, revealed the composite to consist of AuNPs of 70 ± 10 nm diameter decorated with tiny 10 ± 3 nm diameter Fe3O4NPs in Au:Fe mass ratio of 5:1. The prepared Fe3O4-Au nanocomposite was embedded in ionic liquid (IL) and applied for the modification of glassy carbon electrode (GCE) for the electrochemical detection of As(III) in water. By combining the excellent catalytic properties of the AuNPs with the high adsorption capacity of the tiny Fe3O4NPs towards As(III), as well as the good conductivity of IL, the Fe3O4-Au-IL nanocomposite showed excellent performance in the square wave anodic stripping voltammetry detection of As(III). Under the optimized conditions, a linear range of 1 to 100 μg/L was achieved with a detection limit of 0.22 μg/L (S/N = 3), and no interference from 100-fold higher concentrations of a wide variety of cations and anions found in water. A very low residual standard deviation of 1.16% confirmed the high precision/reproducibility of As(III) analysis and the reliability of the Fe3O4-Au-IL sensing interface. Finally, this proposed sensing interface was successfully applied to analyzing synthetic river and wastewater samples with a 95–101% recovery, demonstrating excellent accuracy, even in complex synthetic river and wastewater samples containing high concentrations of humic acid without any sample pretreatments.

Abstract:An automated microfluidic electrochemical platform was developed for the rapid in-field analysis of arsenic speciation. Herein, we integrated an electrochemical sensing and microfluidic channel for the simultaneous determination of As(III) and total inorganic As (total iAs) within a single device. The platform was fabricated by assembling a gold nanoparticle-modified screen-printed graphene electrode (AuNP/SPGE) on a hydrophilic polyethylene terephthalate (PET) sheet that was specially designed to enclose a microfluidic channel with dual flow channels for separate determination of the two species. While As(III) can be promptly detected with the AuNP/SPGE on one end, thioglycolic acid stored in glass fiber is employed on the other end to reduce As(V) before being electrochemically analyzed on the AuNP/SPGE as total iAs; the difference represents the amount of As(V). With a wireless potentiostat and a smartphone equipped with Bluetooth technology, the overall procedure can be fully automated and accomplished merely within 9 min. The linear ranges for the determination of As(III) and total iAs were found to be 50-1000 and 100-1500 ng/mL with detection limits of 3.7 and 17 ng/mL, respectively. The proposed method was validated and applied for the inorganic As speciation of various food samples with satisfactory results compared to those obtained with the standard HPLC-ICP‒MS protocol. This novel microfluidic electrochemical platform offers numerous advantages, notably for its simplicity, speed, low cost, and portability for on-site analysis, which conclusively makes it a highly promising analytical device for the speciation of inorganic arsenic.

Abstract:Much progress has been made in the determination of As (III), while numerous electrochemical sensors based on metal nanomaterials with significant sensitivity and precision have been developed. However, further research is still required to achieve rapid detection and avoid interference from other metal ions (especially copper ions). In this study, bimetallic AuPt nanoparticles are electrochemically modified with screen printing electrodes. What’s more, L-cysteine also self-assembles with AuNPs through Au-S bond to enhance the electrochemical performance. To overcome the interference of Cu (II) in the sensing process, the reduced iron powder was chosen to remove Cu (II) and other oxidizing organics in aqueous solutions. The lowest detectable amount is 0.139 ppb, a linear range of 1~50 ppb with superlative stability by differential pulse anodic stripping voltammetry. Fortunately, the reduced iron powder could eliminate the Cu (II) with no effect on the As (III) signal.
Noble-metal-free Fe3O4/Co3S4 nanosheets with oxygen vacancies as an efficient electrocatalyst for highly sensitive electrochemical detection of As(III)

Abstract:The electrochemical method for highly sensitive determination of arsenic(III) in real water samples with noble-metal-free nanomaterials is still a difficult but significant task. Here, an electrochemical sensor driven by noble-metal-free layered porous Fe3O4/Co3S4 nanosheets was successfully employed for As(III) analysis, which was prepared via a facile two-step method involves a hydrothermal treatment and a subsequent sulfurization process. As expected, the electrochemical detection of As(III) in 0.1 M HAc-NaAc (pH 6.0) by square wave anodic stripping voltammetry (SWASV) with a considerable sensitivity of 4.359 μA/μg·L-1 was obtained, which is better than the commonly used noble metals modified electrodes. Experimental and characterization results elucidate the enhancement of As(III) electrochemical performance could be attributed to its nano-porous structure, the presence of oxygen vacancies and strong synergetic coupling effects between Fe3O4 and Co3S4 species. Besides, the Fe3O4/Co3S4 modified screen printed carbon electrode (Fe3O4/Co3S4-SPCE) shows remarkable stability and repeatability, valuable anti-interference ability and could be used for detection in real water samples. Consequently, the results confirm that as-prepared porous Fe3O4/Co3S4 nanosheets is identified as a promising modifier to detect As(III) in real sample analysis.

Abstract:Three-dimensional (3D) porous laser-scribed graphene (LSG) is potential electrode material for flexible electrochemical sensor own to its high-efficiency preparation and low cost. However, the growth of nanoparticles usually depends on reducers or harsh conditions, which limit the application in flexible biosensor. To solve this drawback, we applied 2D MXene nanosheets to functionalize 3D LSG sheets with a C-O-Ti covalent crosslink and obtain an LSG-MXene hybrid scaffold. We synthesized the shape-controlled Au-Pd bimetallic nanoparticles on the surface of LSG-MXene by a self-reduction process at room temperature in 6 minutes to enhance its catalytic performance. As a proof of concept, the obtained hybrid nanocomposite can assess Ascorbic Acid (AA,10-1600 μM), Dopamine (DA,12-240 μM), and Uric Acid (UA, 8-800 μM). The fabricated sensor exhibited a low detection limit (S/N = 3) of 3 μM AA, 0.13 μM DA, and 1.47 μM UA. Furthermore, the Au-Pd/MXene/LSG was successfully applied to determine AA, DA, and UA in urine samples with satisfactory. Predictable, these outstanding performance sensors have great potential in terms of flexible and wearable electronics.

Abstract:We developed a new method to produce fiber electrodes from single-walled carbon nanotube (SWCNT) films, which can be employed as a novel sensing platform for electrochemical investigations and analysis. By assembling SWCNT bundles in the form of a strong free-standing fiber with almost entire surface accessible to an analyte, we are able to avoid the interference of substrate and improve detection efficiency. We examined the influence of physical, chemical and electrochemical pretreatments of the new electrode SWCNT material on its properties. Transmission and scanning electron microscopy, Raman spectroscopy and cyclic voltammetry were used to characterize the SWCNT fibers. The modification of the SWCNT fiber electrode with gold nanoparticles provides the necessary analytical characteristics including high repeatability and sensitivity and low detection limit (1.3 – 2.1 μg L -1 ) for arsenic determination by anodic stripping voltammetry. Arsenic detection parameters such as deposition potential, deposition time and scan rate were optimized. Linear responses were found in concentration ranges from 3 to 210 μg L -1 and 7 to 125 μg L -1 for gold modified SWCNT fiber sensors (the SWCNTs were synthesized using CO or ethanol as precursors) at a relatively low deposition time of 60 s. The developed Au-SWCNT sensors allow rapid As determination in real samples and exhibit high durability and long service life.

Label-free signal-on aptasensor for sensitive electrochemical detection of arsenite.

Abstract:A signal-on aptasensor was fabricated for highly sensitive and selective electrochemical detection of arsenite with a label-free Ars-3 aptamer self-assembled on a screen-printed carbon electrode (SPCE) via Au-S bond. The Ars-3 aptamer could adsorb cationic polydiallyldimethylammonium (PDDA) via electrostatic interaction to repel other cationic species. In the presence of arsenite, the change of Ars-3 conformation due to the formation of Ars-3/arsenite complex led to less adsorption of PDDA, and the complex could adsorb more positively charged [Ru(NH3)(6)](3+) as an electrochemically active indicator on the aptasensor surface, which produced a sensitive "turn-on" response. The target-induced structure switching could be used for sensitive detection of arsenite with a linear range from 0.2 nM to 100 nM and a detection limit down to 0.15 nM. Benefiting from Ars-3 aptamer, the proposed system exhibited excellent specificity against other heavy metal ions. The SPCE-based aptasensor exhibited the advantages of low cost and simple fabrication, providing potential application of arsenite detection in environment. (C) 2016 Elsevier B.V. Preparation of Fe−Co−LDH/MXene Modified Electrode for Sensitive Determination of Arsenic (III) in Aquatic System

Abstract:3-dimensional (3D) Fe-Co-LDH/MXene composite was synthesized by in-situ synthesis and assembly of Fe-Co-LDH rod around MXene under hydrothermal condition. Due to the unique 3D configuration and good conductivity, the obtained Fe-Co-LDH/MXene modified glassy carbon electrode (Fe-Co-LDH/MXene/GCE) showed excellent electrochemical activity for As(III) detection. Via square-wave anodic stripping voltammetry, the response current on Fe-Co-LDH/MXene/GCE had good linear relationship with As(III) concentrations (1 similar to 1000 ppt) with superior sensitivity (0.22 mu A ppt(-1) cm(-2)) and low detection limit (0.9 ppt). The mechanism of As(III) adsorption was demonstrated. The electrode showed excellent anti-interference ability. Real water sample analysis demonstrated the Fe-Co-LDH/MXene/GCE was deployable in aqua-system.

Abstract:An electrochemical sensor was fabricated for arsenite detection using graphene oxide-assisted generation of prussian blue nanoparticles as enhanced redox signal label. The 5'-thiolate-labeled (GT)(21)-ssDNA was first self-assembled on a gold electrode surface via Au-S bond. Graphene oxide can interact with ssDNA through pi-pi stacking interaction and facilitate the generation of prussian blue nanoparticles on its surface as an electrochemically active indicator. In the absence of arsenite, plenty of graphene oxide/prussian blue nanoparticles can be adsorbed on the electrode surface to produce a stronger redox signal of prussian blue nanoparticles. While in the presence of arsenite, (GT)(21)-ssDNA can recognize and combine with arsenite via hydrogen bonds to form (GT)(21)-ssDNA/arsenite complex with a frizzy structure. The conformational change of (GT)(21)-ssDNA led to less adsorption of graphene oxide/prussian blue nanoparticles on the electrode surface, resulting in a reduced redox response. The arsenite-induced (GT)(21)-ssDNA structure switching can be used for sensitive detection of arsenite with a linear range from 0.2 to 500 ppb and a detection limit down to 0.058 ppb. Benefiting from (GT)(21)-ssDNA containing arsenite recognition sequence, the proposed sensor exhibited excellent specificity against other heavy metal ions. The applicability of the electrochemical biosensor for arsenite assay in real water samples demonstrated the great potential of this strategy for trace arsenite detection in environment. Abstract:Field-effect transistor (FET)-based sensors are now attracting increasing attention due to their high sensitivity, low-cost, convenient fabrication, and portability. Black phosphorus (BP) nanosheet, due to its unique structure and excellent electronic properties, becomes a promising candidate for high-performance sensing material in an FET sensor. Here, we report an FET sensor using hybrid structure of BP and dithiothreitol (DTT)-functionalized gold (Au) nanoparticles (NPs) for the detection of Arsenic (As) in water. The performance of the as-fabricated sensor is outstanding with a lower limit of detection (LOD) of 1 nM, which is much lower than the maximum contaminant level (MCL) for As ions in drinking water (130 nM) advised by the U. S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). The sensor also shows a rapid response (within 1-2 s) and good selectivity against other metal ions (e. g., Hg2+, Ca2+, Cd2+, etc.). The rapid, selective, sensitive and stable sensing performance suggests a strong potential of this sensor platform for in-situ detection of As in water, either as a standalone device or being assembled into existing water equipment to continuously monitor water pollutants. Fabrication of Flexible Au Microsensors by a Simple Stamping Method for the Point-of-care Direct Detection of Trace Leucomalachite Green

Abstract:Leucomalachite green (LMG) is the metabolic product of malachite green, which is a common aquaculture antimicrobial known for its high toxicity and long persistence. To date, few reports on the direct detection of LMG using electrochemical point-of-care (POC) sensors have been published. In the present work, flexible gold (Au) microsensors were fabricated from nanometer-thin Au leaves for the first time on different substrates, such as polyethylene terephthalate, thermoplastic polyurethane, silicone, polyvinyl chloride wristbands, and nitrile gloves, through simple hot stamping. The entire fabrication process did not involve toxic solvents and complex equipment, and the material cost was only $0.1 per microsensor. The morphology, electrochemical properties, and sensing performance of the microsensors were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, cyclic voltammetry, and differential pulse voltammetry. Benefiting from the excellent catalytic activity and conductivity of Au, the microsensors exhibited outstanding direct sensing capability for LMG with a detection limit of 6.3 nM. Moreover, the microsensors demonstrated excellent recovery rates in real sample analysis, validating their practicality. The technology reported in this work provides a pioneering and effective solution for the sensitive and convenient POC direct detection of LMG and further allows for the fabrication of Au microsensors on different flexible and conformal substrates, offering sensitive solutions for POC detection in environmental, food safety, and healthcare applications.
Ultrafast Detection of Arsenic Using Carbon-Fiber Microelectrodes and Fast-Scan Cyclic Voltammetry

Abstract:Arsenic contamination poses a significant public health risk worldwide, with chronic exposure leading to various health issues. Detecting and monitoring arsenic exposure accurately remains challenging, necessitating the development of sensitive detection methods. In this study, we introduce a novel approach using fast-scan cyclic voltammetry (FSCV) coupled with carbon-fiber microelectrodes (CFMs) for the electrochemical detection of As3+. Through an in-depth pH study using tris buffer, we optimized the electrochemical parameters for both acidic and basic media. Our sensor demonstrated high selectivity, distinguishing the As3+ signal from those of As5+ and other potential interferents under ambient conditions. We achieved a limit of detection (LOD) of 0.5 μM (37.46 ppb) and a sensitivity of 2.292 nA/μM for bare CFMs. Microscopic data confirmed the sensor's stability at lower, physiologically relevant concentrations. Additionally, using our previously reported double-bore CFMs, we simultaneously detected As3+-Cu2+ and As3+-Cd2+ in tris buffer, enhancing the LOD of As3+ to 0.2 μM (14.98 ppb). To our knowledge, this is the first study to use CFMs for the rapid and selective detection of As3+ via FSCV. Our sensor's ability to distinguish As3+ from As5+ in a physiologically relevant pH environment showcases its potential for future in vivo studies.

Abstract:Au nanoparticles decorated mesoporous MnFe₂O₄ nanocrystal clusters (MnFe₂O₄/Au hybrid nanospheres) were used for the electrochemical sensing of As(III) by square wave anodic stripping voltammetry (SWASV). Modified on a cheap glass carbon electrode, these MnFe₂O₄/Au hybrid nanospheres show favorable sensitivity (0.315 μA/ppb) and limit of detection (LOD) (3.37 ppb) toward As(III) under the optimized conditions in 0.1 M NaAc-HAc (pH 5.0) by depositing for 150 s at the deposition potential of -0.9 V. No obvious interference from Cd(II) and Hg(II) was recognized during the detection of As(III). Additionally, the developed electrode displayed good reproducibility, stability, and repeatability, and offered potential practical applicability for electrochemical detection of As(III) in real water samples. The present work provides a potential method for the design of new and cheap sensors in the application of electrochemical determination toward trace As(III) and other toxic metal ions.
