Abstract:A compression molding foaming technique was used to prepare polylactic acid foams with a chemical foaming agent. The effect of melt viscosity of the polylactic acid on its cell morphology, apparent density, void fraction, cell population density, cell diameter, mechanical properties, and thermal property were studied. The apparent density of the foamed polylactic acid first decreased with decreasing melt viscosity and then increased, whereas the void fraction showed an opposite trend. A lower melt viscosity resulted in smaller cells, a more uniform cell size distribution, and a higher cell population density until the viscosity could not support further cell expansion which subsequently could cause gas escape and cell collapse. The tensile strength of the foams first increased with decreasing melt viscosity and then decreased. Their impact strength and flexural strength were improved by decreasing the melt viscosity. The use of glycidyl methacrylate only showed a small influence on the thermal stability of foamed polylactic acid.
Preparation of high melt strength polypropylene by the reactive extrusion process and its foaming application

Abstract:The reactive extrusion of maleic anhydride grafted polypropylene (PP-g-MAH) with ethylenediamine (EDA) as coupling agent was carried out in a co-rotating twin-screw extruder to produce long chain branched polypropylene (LCBPP). Part of PP-g-MAH was replaced by maleic anhydride grafted high-density polyethylene (HDPE-g-MAH) or linear low-density polyethylene (LLDPE-g-MAH) to obtain hybrid long chain branched (LCB) polymers. Compared with the linear PP, PE and their blends, the LCB polyolefins exhibit excellent dynamic shear and transient extensional rheological characteristics such as increased dynamic modulus, higher low-frequency complex viscosity, significantly enhanced melt strength and strain-hardening behaviors. LCB polymers also have higher tensile strength, tensile modulus, impact strength and lower elongation at break than linear polymer and their blends. Supercritical carbon dioxide (scCO2) was introduced in the reactive extrusion process. With the presence of scCO 2, the motor current of twin extruder was decreased and LCB polyolefins with lower MFR, higher complex viscosity and increased tensile strength and modulus were obtained. This indicates that the application of scCO2 can reduce the viscosity of melt in extruder, enhance the diffusion of reactive species, facilitate the reaction between functional groups, and increase the LCB density. The foaming behavior of both linear and LCB polyolefins were studied. The results show that cellular materials produced from the LCB polyolefins have higher weight reduction, smaller cell size and better mechanical properties than those produced from the linear polymers.
Influence of Molecular Structure on the Rheological Properties and Foamability of Long Chain Branched Polypropylene by “One-Pot” Reactive Extrusion

Abstract:In this work, reactive twin screw extrusion was conducted to synthesize long chain branched polypropylenes (LCB-PPs) in a “one-pot” process in which dicumyl peroxide (DCP) initiated maleic anhydride (MAH) grafting onto the linear PP, and the concomitant coupling reaction between ethylene diamine (EDA) and MAH grafted polypropylene (PP-g-MAH) proceeded in series. Fourier transfer infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) on the prepared materials confirmed the occurrence of both reactions. A series of LCB-PPs were prepared using different amounts of EDA, MAH and DCP to study their effects and determine the optimal synthesis conditions. The prepared materials were characterized by size exclusion chromatography (SEC) and rheological analysis to ascertain the polymer microstructure. The foamability of the LCB-PPs by supercritical carbon dioxide (scCO2) foaming and foam morphology were investigated. The LCB-PPs were found to have vastly improved foamability and cellular morphology. Under optimal conditions, a foam expansion ratio of over 20 was achieved.
Effect of long‐chain branches of polypropylene on rheological properties and foam‐extrusion performances

Abstract:The effect of modifying polypropylene by the addition of long-chain branches on the rheological properties and performance of foam extrusion was studied. Three polypropylenes, two long-chain-branched polypropylenes and a linear polypropylene, were compared in this study. The modification was performed with a reactive-extrusion process with the addition of a multifunctional monomer and peroxide. The rheological properties were measured with a parallel-plate and elongational rheometer to characterize the branching degree. The change from a linear structure to a long-chain-branched nonlinear structure increased the melt strength and elasticity of polypropylene. Also, there was a significant improvement in the melt tension and sag resistance for branched polypropylenes. Foaming extrusion was performed, and the effect of the process variables on the foam density was analyzed with Taguchi's experimental design method. For this study, an L18(2135) orthogonal array was used on six parameters at two or three levels of variation. The considered parameters were the polypropylene type, the blowing agent type, the blowing agent content, the die temperature, the screw speed (rpm), and the capillary die length/diameter ratio. Abstract:Since the melt viscosity of PP is lower than others,bubble is more easily escaping from the fondant during the foamed process.In order to enhance the degree of cross-linking of PP,low-density polyethylene(LDPE) and DCP are added into the PP materials.The melt viscosity of PP increased significantly by this means.The influence of the type and content of the components of the polymer blend on the degree of the cross-linking of PP was discussed.The results showed that the crosslinking structure was produced by the reaction of PP and LDPE under the heat condition during the blending process.Blends had better foaming structure and showed better foaming effect than pure PP.PP showed the best effect of foaming when the amount of LDPE is 70%,the amount of foaming agent is 5%,the amount of DCP is 0.36%.Solving the pores collapse phenomenon in PP foaming process.

Abstract:In the present study, semi-crystalline polypropylene (PP) and amorphous polystyrene (PS) were adopted as matrix materials. After the exothermic foaming agent azodicarbonamide was added, injection molding was implemented to create samples. The mold flow analysis program Moldex3D was then applied to verify the short-shot results. Three process parameters were adopted, namely injection speed, melt temperature, and mold temperature; three levels were set for each factor in the one-factor-at-a-time experimental design. The macroscopic effects of the factors on the weight, specific weight, and expansion ratios of the samples were investigated to determine foaming efficiency, and their microscopic effects on cell density and diameter were examined using a scanning electron microscope. The process parameters for the exothermic foaming agent were optimized accordingly. Finally, the expansion ratios of the two matrix materials in the optimal process parameter settings were compared. After the experimental database was created, the foaming module of the chemical blowing agents was established by Moldex3D Company. The results indicated that semi-crystalline materials foamed less due to their crystallinity. PP exhibits the highest expansion ratio at low injection speed, a high melt temperature, and a low mold temperature, whereas PS exhibits the highest expansion ratio at high injection speed, a moderate melt temperature, and a low mold temperature.

Abstract:This paper is intended to provide an engineering understanding of the technological potentials for processing polypropylene (PP) foams in rotational foam molding. A process proposal, based on the melt compounding material-preparation approach, capable of producing completely foamed, single-layer, single-piece PP products in rotational foam molding, is disclosed in detail. It comprises dispersing a chemical blowing agent (CBA) in the PP matrix using a twin-screw compounder, pelletizing the obtained expandable composition, and then producing foams in an uninterrupted rotational foam molding cycle by using the pre-compounded foamable pellets. Several PP grades were deliberately selected to cover a wide range of melt flow rates (MFR), starting from 5.5 up to 35 dg/min. After the raw materials participating in the study were characterized using thermal analysis instrumentation, different foamable compositions were formulated in order to prepare both 3-fold and 6-fold foamable pellets from each PP grade. The optimal foam processing strategies were identified via a systematic experimental parametric search. Foams with the best cell morphologies were obtained out of the high melt strength PP grades. In addition, the experimental results revealed that the cell morphology of the processed PP foams is not as good as that of respective PE foams. However, the cell morphologies of the PP foams processed by using the melt compounding-based approach demonstrated significant improvements in comparison with those processed by using the dry blending-based approach.

Abstract:In our study, in order to prepare PLA microcellular foam at high temperature, linear polylactic acid (L-lactone) (PLLA) was mixed with epoxy resin chain extender, and then blended with polylactic acid (D-lactone) (PDLA) to prepare bPLLA/PDLA mixture. The bPLLA/PDLA mixture produces stereocomplex (SC) crystals. The addition of SC crystal as a melt enhancer resulted in a significant enhancement of the melt strength of bPLLA, with an increase of 10 4 . Furthermore, the nucleation effect increased the overall crystallinity (X C ) of the bPLLA/PDLA blends from 5.29 to 23.21%, thereby enhancing the heat resistance of the bPLLA/PDLA blends. The hot deformation temperature was increased from 55.5 °C to 62.4 °C. During the foaming process, SC crystals acted as nucleating agents for bubbles, reducing the cell diameter from 30.59 μm to 3.09 μm, increasing the cell density by 10 2 , and improving cell uniformity. In addition, an increase in PDLA content resulted in a notable enhancement in the compressive strength of bPLLA foam, from 0.44 MPa to 0.72 MPa. After heat treatment at 150 °C, the dimensional deformation was found to decrease from 42.59 to 13.13%, accompanied by an improvement in heat resistance. This study presents a simple method for the preparation of PLA microporous foam at high temperatures, resulting in the production of high-performance PLA foam, which is of great significance for the development of batch foaming towards industrial continuous foaming production.

Abstract:This study addresses the challenge of achieving foam with a high expansion ratio and poor mechanical properties, caused by the low melt viscosity of semi-crystalline polypropylene (PP). We systematically employ a modification approach involving blending PP with polyolefin elastomers (POE), irradiation crosslinking, and fiber reinforcement to prepare fiber-reinforced crosslinked PP/POE composite foam. Through optimization and characterization of material composition and processing conditions, the obtained fiber-reinforced crosslinked PP/POE composite foam exhibits both low density and high performance. Specifically, at a crosslinking degree of 12%, the expansion ratio reaches 16 times its original value, and a foam density of 0.057 g/cm3 is reduced by 36% compared to the non-crosslinked PP/POE system with a density of 0.089 g/cm3. The density of the short-carbon-fiber-reinforced crosslinked sCF/PP/POE composite foam is comparable to that of the crosslinked PP/POE system, but the tensile strength reaches 0.69 MPa, representing a 200% increase over the crosslinked PP/POE system and a 41% increase over the non-crosslinked PP/POE system. Simultaneously, it exhibits excellent impact strength, tear resistance, and low heat shrinkage. Irradiation crosslinking is beneficial for enhancing the melt strength and resistance to high temperature thermal shrinkage of PP/POE foam, while fiber reinforcement contributes significantly to improving mechanical properties. These achieve a good complementary effect in low-density and high-performance PP foam modification.

Abstract:The key technologies used in the extrusion foaming of polypropylene were introduced based on the properties of foaming system and foaming mechanisms, focusing on the viscoelasticity of polypropylene melt, solubility and diffusivity of blowing agents, crystallization behavior of polypropylene, as well as cell nucleation and bubble growth mechanisms. The research results showed that the long-chain branched polypropylene with remarkable strain hardening behavior and high melt strength was the premise in the production of excellent polypropylene foam. The cell density, cell size and cell size distribution of polypropylene foam were influenced remarkably by the solubility and diffusivity of blowing agents, crystallization behavior of polypropylene, kinds and properties of nucleating agents. It was very useful of the appropriate cell nucleation and bubble growth mechanisms for formula design, processing technologies and extrusion line selection.
Morphological, thermal and mechanical properties of polypropylene foams via rotational molding

Abstract:In this work, polypropylene (PP) was foamed via rotational molding using a chemical blowing agent (CBA) based on azodicarbonamide over a range of concentration (0 to 0.5% wt.). The samples were then analyzed in terms of morphological, thermal and mechanical properties. The morphological analysis showed a continuous increase in the average cell size and cell density with increasing CBA content. Increasing the CBA content also led to lower foam density and thermal conductivity. Similarly, all the mechanical properties (tension, flexion and impact) were found to decrease with increasing CBA content. Finally, the efficiency of the rotomolding process was assessed by producing neat PP samples via compression molding. The results showed negligible differences between the rotomolded and compression molded properties at low deformation and rate of deformation indicating that optimal rotomolding conditions were selected.

Abstract:27 patients with Paget's disease, from 51 to 80 years of age, were treated with etidronate disodium at a dose of 5 mg/kg/day. 70 percent of patients had multiple bone involvement. Six patients had previously been treated with diphosphonates, and nine had previously received synthetic pork or salmon calcitonin. The following parameters were studied: the serum alkaline phosphatase, urinary hydroxyproline, a self-assessment scale to evaluate pain and a scale to assess improvement in functional capacity. From the first month of treatment, significant improvement in pain indices was noted and over the following two months there was an associated significant regression in parameters of bone resorption and formation. The clinical and laboratory improvement brought about with diphosphonates persisted three months after cessation of therapy in 88 percent of cases. Gastrointestinal tolerance of the drug was excellent, but three cases of transitory leukopenia occurred which resolved spontaneously, requiring in two cases cessation of therapy. Even though it is impossible to correlate with certainty this previously undescribed finding to therapy with etidronate disodium, we believe that at a dose of 5 mg/kg/day, the drug provides rapid, effective, long term treatment in Paget's disease, but that regular hematologic surveillance should be performed.

Abstract:Abstract The foamed polypropylene (PP) composites were prepared by injection molding process. Fourier’s law and software were used to calculate and simulate the internal temperature distribution of PP composites, respectively, and the influence of the temperature distribution on the foaming quality of foamed PP composites was further analyzed. The result showed that the calculative and simulated results of temperature distribution in different thermal transfer directions had great reproducibility. In different isothermal planes, the temperature from the nozzle to the dynamic mold gradually decreased. The isothermal plane with a temperature of 370.36 K had a better foaming quality, average diameter of cell and cell density were 28.46 μm and 3.7 × 10 10 cells·cm −3 , respectively. In different regions of the same isothermal plane, the temperature gradually decreased from the center to the edge. The foaming quality in the region (c) at a temperature of 335.86 K was ideal, and the average diameter of cell and the cell density were 26.5 μm and 2.39 × 10 10 cells·cm −3 , respectively. This work could provide prediction for improving the foaming quality of foamed polyolefin composites.

Abstract:A mathematical model was established to simulate the bubble growth process during foaming of polypropylene (PP) by carbon dioxide, taking into account of a wide range of physical and rheological properties (solubility, diffusivity, surface tension, long-chain branching, zero shear viscosity, relaxation time, strain hardening), as well as processing conditions. By employing the Considère construction the possibility of growth instability and bubble rupture at later stage of bubble growth was predicted. The simulation revealed that the improvement of foamability of polypropylene by introducing long-chain branching was due to the well-defined viscoelastic characteristics of the melt. Rheological factors that impede bubble growth are beneficial in stabilizing the bubble growth. Stability during bubble growth is further facilitated by moderate strain hardening characteristics and elastics properties of the polymers. The diffusivity and solubility characteristics also have profound impact on the bubble growth stability, while the influence of the surface tension is negligible.

Abstract:Controlling foamability plays the central role in preparing PLA foams with high performances. To achieve this, chain extension was often used to improve the rheological property of PLA resins; however, despite the availability of this approach, it often deteriorates the biodegradability of PLA and greatly increases the processing cost and complexity. Hence, we reported a special crystallization induction method to design PLA foams with a tunable cellular structure and a high expansion ratio. A novel crystallization-promoting agent combination (D-sorbitol, CO2, and phenylphosphonic acid zinc salt) was used to induce PLA to enhance the chain interaction force and chain mobility and to provide crystallization templets. A series of PLAs with tunable stereocomplex (Sc)/α crystallinity and rapid non-isothermal crystallization ability were obtained. The effect of various crystallization properties on the foaming behavior of PLA was studied. The results demonstrated that proper crystallization conditions (a small spherulite size, a crystallinity of 6%, and rapid crystallization ability) could virtually contribute to the optimized cellular structure with the highest cell density of 4.36 × 106 cell/cm3. When the Sc crystallinity was above 10%, PLA had a superior foamability, which thereby resulted in a high foaming expansion ratio of 16.2. A variety of cellular morphologies of PLA foams could be obtained by changing the foaming temperature and the crystallization property. The proposed crystallization-induced approach provided a useful method for controlling the cellular structure and the performances of the PLA foams.

Abstract:We explore the foam extrusion of expanded polypropylene with a long chain branched random co-polypropylene to make its production process simpler and cheaper. The results show that the presence of long chain branches infer high melt strength and, hence, a wide foamability window. We explored the entire window of foaming conditions (namely, temperature and pressure) by means of an ad-hoc extrusion pilot line design. It is shown that the density of the beads can be varied from 20 to 100 kg/m3 using CO2 and isobutane as a blowing agent. The foamed beads were molded by steam-chest molding using moderate steam pressures of 0.3 to 0.35 MPa independently of the closed cell content. A characterization of the mechanical properties was performed on the molded parts. The steam molding pressure for sintering expanded polypropylene beads with a long chain branched random co-polypropylene is lower than the one usually needed for standard polypropylene beads by extrusion. The energy saving for the sintering makes the entire manufacturing processes cost efficient and can trigger new applications.

Abstract:polypropylene (PP) syntactic foams (SFs) containing hollow glass microspheres (HGMs) possess low density and elevated mechanical properties, which can be tuned according to the specific application. A possible way to improve their multifunctionality could be the incorporation of organic Phase Change Materials (PCMs), widely used for thermal energy storage (TES) applications. In the present work, a PCM constituted by encapsulated paraffin, having a melting temperature of 57 °C, was embedded in a compatibilized polypropylene SF by melt compounding and hot pressing at different relative amounts. The rheological, morphological, thermal, and mechanical properties of the prepared materials were systematically investigated. Rheological properties in the molten state were strongly affected by the introduction of both PCMs and HGMs. As expected, the introduction of HGMs reduced both the foam density and thermal conductivity, while the enthalpy of fusion (representing the TES capability) was proportional to the PCM concentration. The mechanical properties of these foams were improved by the incorporation of HGMs, while they were reduced by addition of PCMs. Therefore, the combination of PCMs and HGMs in a PP matrix generated multifunctional materials with tunable thermo-mechanical properties, with a wide range of applications in the automotive, oil, textile, electronics, and aerospace fields.
Comparison of chain microstructure between two propylene−ethylene copolymer resins with bimodal melting temperature distribution

Abstract:Polypropylene (PP) has been commonly used as packaging materials due to the favorable mechanical and optical properties related to its diverse and complex chain microstructure which can be better understood through effective fractionation. In this work, two commercial PP resins (A and B) with similar bimodal melting temperature distribution in the range of 100–160 °C but different ethylene content (9.1–12.3 mol%) are fractionated by preparative temperature rising elution fractionation (P-TREF) and relevant fractions are characterized by a variety of techniques such as high temperature-gel permeation chromatography (HT-GPC), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), 13C nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy, Fourier transform-infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, and wide-angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD). The chain microstructures of the two resins used as food packaging film exhibit heterogeneity and some differences, which are mainly caused by broad and different distribution of ethylene comonomers. Resin B contains more ethylene units than resin A, and the ethylene units are incorporated into the PP chains in the forms of individual unit or very short segments, resulting in large amount of fractions with relatively low isotacticity and crystallinity that eluted at the temperature range of 35–90 °C. These fractions account for 84.07 wt% of resin B, whereas 59.66 wt% of resin A. The propylene sequences of different isotacticity and crystallinity generated by the insertion of ethylene comonomers in resin B are mainly responsible for its biomodal melting behavior. However, ethylene comonomers tend to insert into the PP chains of resin A in the forms of long polyethylene (PE) blocks and generate propylene−ethylene block copolymers with high crystallizability which can be eluted at high temperatures of 120–140 °C. These fractions constitute 3.16 wt% of resin A, but barely exist in resin B. Moreover, 35.83 wt% of resin A were eluted at 110 °C, whereas only 13.22 wt% of resin B can be eluted at this temperature. These fractions with high isotacticity and molecular weight eluted at high temperatures contribute to the higher flexural modulus of resin A. Both long ethylene blocks and propylene sequences of different lengths contribute to the biomodal melting peaks on the thermogram of resin A.

Abstract:AbstractThe crystallization behaviors and mechanical properties of both linear isotactic polypropylene (iPP) and long chain branching polypropylene (LCBPP) were investigated with differential scanning calorimetry, polarized optical microscopy, and wide-angle X-ray diffraction. The results indicated that the long chain branching (LCB) structure could act as nucleating agent accelerating the nucleation but impeding the crystal growth of LCBPP, and eventually increased the crystallization peak temperature and decreased the spherulite size of LCBPP. Moreover, with the presence of LCB structure, β-form polypropylene was generated in LCBPPs under injection molding conditions, and the content of β-form increased with the increasing of LCB structure content. Benefiting from the combined effect of the LCB structure and β-form crystal, the LCBPPs revealed not only outstanding toughness but also desired stiffness. The impact strength, flexural modulus and tensile strength of HMSPP3 were increased by, respectively, 260.0, 54.7, and 17.2 % than those of linear iPP. These results are helpful to develop new types of high performance polypropylene.
