Abstract:The current benchmark study is focused on determiningthe mostprecise theoretical method for optimizing the geometry of transitionmetal-dinitrogen complexes. To accomplish this goal, sevendensity functional (DF) methods from five distinct classes of densityfunctional theory (DFT) have been selected, including B3LYP-D3(BJ),BP86-D3(BJ), PBE0-D3(BJ), & omega;B97X-D, M06, M06-L, and TPSSh-D3(BJ).These DFs will be utilized with the Karlsruhe basis set (def2-SVP).To carry out this benchmark study, a total of forty-two structurallydiverse transition metal-dinitrogen compounds with experimentallyknown X-ray data have been selected from the Cambridge CrystallographicData Centre (CCDC). Based on a comparison of the theoretical datawith experimental values (X-ray) of the selected transition metal-dinitrogencompounds, statistical parameters such as root-mean-square deviation(RMSD) and N-N and M-N bond lengths are obtained toevaluate the performance of the seven chosen DFs. According to theobtained results, among all DFT methods used in the study, Minnesotafunctionals (M06 and M06-L) and TPSSh-D3(BJ) show good performance,with lower RMSD values. This suggests that these three methods arethe most reliable for optimizing the geometry of transition metal-dinitrogencomplexes. Based on the absolute errors of the N-N and M-Nbond lengths relative to the X-ray data, further analysis is conducted,and it is determined that M06-L is the best functional for optimizingthe geometry of transition metal-dinitrogen compounds. Additionally,the influence of using a high-level basis set (def2-TZVP) comparedto def2-SVP on the calculated RMSD among the seven chosen methodsis found to be negligible.
Pericyclic reaction benchmarks: hierarchical computations targeting CCSDT(Q)/CBS and analysis of DFT performance

Abstract:Hierarchical, convergent ab initio benchmark computations were performed followed by a systematic analysis of DFT performance for five pericyclic reactions comprising Diels-Alder, 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition, electrocyclic rearrangement, sigmatropic rearrangement, and double group transfer prototypes. Focal point analyses (FPA) extrapolating to the ab initio limit were executed via explicit quantum chemical computations with electron correlation treatments through CCSDT(Q) and correlation-consistent Gaussian basis sets up to aug′-cc-pV5Z. Optimized geometric structures and vibrational frequencies of all stationary points were obtained at the CCSD(T)/cc-pVTZ level of theory. The FPA reaction barriers and energies exhibit convergence to within a few tenths of a kcal mol −1 . The FPA benchmarks were used to evaluate the performance of 60 density functionals (eight dispersion-corrected), covering the local-density approximation (LDA), generalized gradient approximations (GGAs), meta-GGAs, hybrids, meta-hybrids, double-hybrids, and range-separated hybrids. The meta-hybrid M06-2X functional provided the best overall performance [mean absolute error (MAE) of 1.1 kcal mol −1 ] followed closely by the double-hybrids B2K-PLYP, mPW2K-PLYP, and revDSD-PBEP86 [MAE of 1.4–1.5 kcal mol −1 ]. The regularly used GGA functional BP86 gave a higher MAE of 5.8 kcal mol −1 , but it qualitatively described the trends in reaction barriers and energies. Importantly, we established that accurate yet efficient meta-hybrid or double-hybrid DFT potential energy surfaces can be acquired based on geometries from the computationally efficient and robust BP86/DZP level.

Ultrafast estimation of electronic couplings for electron transfer between pi-conjugated organic molecules. II

Abstract:The development of highly efficient methods for the calculation of electronic coupling matrix elements between the electron donor and acceptor is an important goal in theoretical organic semiconductor research. In Paper I [F. Gajdos, S. Valner, F. Hoffmann, J. Spencer, M. Breuer, A. Kubas, M. Dupuis, and J. Blumberger, J. Chem. Theory Comput. 10, 4653 (2014)], we introduced the analytic overlap method (AOM) for this purpose, which is an ultrafast electronic coupling estimator parameterized to and orders of magnitude faster than density functional theory (DFT) calculations at a reasonably small loss in accuracy. In this work, we reparameterize and extend the AOM to molecules containing nitrogen, oxygen, fluorine, and sulfur heteroatoms using 921 dimer configurations from the recently introduced HAB79 dataset. We find again a very good linear correlation between the frontier orbital overlap, calculated ultrafast in an optimized minimum Slater basis, and DFT reference electronic couplings. The new parameterization scheme is shown to be transferable to sulfur-containing polyaromatic hydrocarbons in experimentally resolved dimeric configurations. Our extension of the AOM enables high-throughput screening of very large databases of chemically diverse organic crystal structures and the application of computationally intense non-adiabatic molecular dynamics methods to charge transport in state-of-the-art organic semiconductors, e.g., non-fullerene acceptors.
How To Arrive at Accurate Benchmark Values for Transition Metal Compounds: Computation or Experiment?

Abstract:With the objective of analyzing which kind of reference data is appropriate for benchmarking quantum chemical approaches for transition metal compounds, we present the following, (a) a collection of 60 transition metal diatomic molecules for which experimentally derived dissociation energies, equilibrium distances, and harmonic vibrational frequencies are known and (b) a composite computational approach based on coupled-cluster theory with basis set extrapolation, inclusion of core-valence correlation, and corrections for relativistic and multireference effects. The latter correction was obtained from internally contracted multireference coupled-cluster (icMRCC) theory. This composite approach has been used to obtain the dissociation energies and spectroscopic constants for the 60 molecules in our data set. In accordance with previous studies on a subset of molecules, we find that multireference corrections are rather small in many cases and CCSD(T) can provide accurate reference values, if the complete basis set limit is explored. In addition, the multireference correction improves the results in cases where CCSD(T) is not a good approximation. For a few cases, however, strong deviations from experiment persist, which cannot be explained by the remaining error in the computational approach. We suggest that these experimentally derived values require careful revision. This also shows that reliable reference values for benchmarking approximate computational methods are not always easily accessible via experiment and accurate computations may provide an alternative way to access them. In order to assess how the choice of reference data affects benchmark studies, we tested 10 DFT functionals for the molecules in the present data set against experimental and calculated reference values. Despite the differences between these two sets of reference values, we found that the ranking of the relative performance of the DFT functionals is nearly independent of the chosen reference.

Quantum Mechanical Calculation of Noncovalent Interactions: A Large-Scale Evaluation of PMx, DFT, and SAPT Approaches

Abstract:Quantum mechanical (QM) calculations of noncovalent interactions are uniquely useful as tools to test and improve molecular mechanics force fields and to model the forces involved in biomolecular binding and folding. Because the more computationally tractable QM methods necessarily include approximations, which risk degrading accuracy, it is essential to evaluate such methods by comparison with high-level reference calculations. Here, we use the extensive Benchmark Energy and Geometry Database (BEGDB) of CCSD(T)/CBS reference results to evaluate the accuracy and speed of widely used QM methods for over 1200 chemically varied gas-phase dimers. In particular, we study the semiempirical PM6 and PM7 methods; density functional theory (DFT) approaches B3LYP, B97-D, M062X, and ωB97X-D; and symmetry-adapted perturbation theory (SAPT) approach. For the PM6 and DFT methods, we also examine the effects of post hoc corrections for hydrogen bonding (PM6-DH+, PM6-DH2), halogen atoms (PM6-DH2X), and dispersion (DFT-D3 with zero and Becke-Johnson damping). Several orders of the SAPT expansion are also compared, ranging from SAPT0 up to SAPT2+3, where computationally feasible. We find that all DFT methods with dispersion corrections, as well as SAPT at orders above SAPT2, consistently provide dimer interaction energies within 1.0 kcal/mol RMSE across all systems. We also show that a linear scaling of the perturbative energy terms provided by the fast SAPT0 method yields similar high accuracy, at particularly low computational cost. The energies of all the dimer systems from the various QM approaches are included in the Supporting Information, as are the full SAPT2+(3) energy decomposition for a subset of over 1000 systems. The latter can be used to guide the parametrization of molecular mechanics force fields on a term-by-term basis.

CampusContent focused on essential challenges concerning use and utility of learning objects and developed principles, methods and tools that support educators in the process of contextualising learning objects within educational settings. Critical Benchmarking of the G4(MP2) Model, the Correlation Consistent Composite Approach and Popular Density Functional Approximations on a Probabilistically Pruned Benchmark Dataset of Formation Enthalpies

Abstract:First-principles calculation of the standard formation enthalpy, $\Delta H_f^\circ$ (298K), in such large scale as required by chemical space explorations, is amenable only with density functional approximations (DFAs) and some composite wave function theories (cWFTs). Alas, the accuracies of popular range-separated hybrid, `rung-4' DFAs, and cWFTs that offer the best accuracy-vs.-cost trade-off have as yet been established only for datasets predominantly comprising small molecules, hence, their transferability to larger datasets remains vague. In this study, we present an extended benchmark dataset of over 1600 values of $\Delta H_f^\circ$ for structurally and electronically diverse molecules. We apply quartile-ranking based on boundary-corrected kernel density estimation to filter outliers and arrive at Probabilistically Pruned Enthalpies of 1694 compounds (PPE1694). For this dataset, we rank the prediction accuracies of G4, G4(MP2), ccCA, CBS-QB3 and 23 popular DFAs using conventional and probabilistic error metrics. We discuss systematic prediction errors and highlight the role an empirical higher-level correction (HLC) plays in the G4(MP2) model. Furthermore, we comment on uncertainties associated with the reference empirical data for atoms and the systematic errors stemming from these that grow with the molecular size. We believe these findings to aid in identifying meaningful application domains for quantum thermochemical methods.

Prediction of electronic couplings for molecular charge transfer using optimally-tuned range-separated hybrid functionals

Abstract:Electronic coupling matrix elements are important to the theoretical description of electron transfer processes. However, they are notoriously difficult to obtain accurately from time- dependent density functional theory (TDDFT). Here, we use the HAB11 benchmark dataset of coupling matrix elements to assess whether TDDFT using optimally-tuned range-separated hybrid functionals, already known to be successful for the description of charge transfer excitation energies, also allows for an improved accuracy in the prediction of coupling matrix elements. We find that this approach outperforms all previous TDDFT calculations, based on semi-local, hybrid, or non-tuned range-separated hybrid functionals, with a remaining average deviation as low as ~12%. We discuss potential sources for the remaining error.

Calculations on noncovalent interactions and databases of benchmark interaction energies

Abstract:Although covalent interactions determine the primary structure of a molecule, the noncovalent interactions are responsible for the tertiary and quaternary structure of a molecule and create the fascinating world of the 3D architectures of biomacromolecules. For example, the double helical structure of DNA is of fundamental importance for the function of DNA: it allows it to store and transfer genetic information. To fulfill this role, the structure is rigid to maintain the double helix with a proper positioning of the complementary base, and floppy to allow for its opening. Very strong covalent interactions cannot fulfill both of these criteria, but noncovalent interactions, which are about 2 orders of magnitude weaker, can. This Account highlights the recent advances in the field of the design of novel wave function theory (WFT) methods applicable to noncovalent complexes ranging in size from less than 100 atoms, for which highly accurate ab initio methods are available, up to extended ones (several thousands atoms), which are the domain of semiempirical QM (SQM) methods. Accurate interaction energies for noncovalent complexes are generated by the coupled-cluster technique, taking single- and double-electron excitations iteratively and triple-electron excitation perturbatively with a complete basis set description (CCSD(T)/CBS). The procedure provides interaction energies with high accuracy (error less than 1 kcal/mol). Because the method is computationally demanding, its application is limited to complexes smaller than 30 atoms. But researchers would also like to use computational methods to determine these interaction energies accurately for larger biological and nanoscale structures. Standard QM methods such as MP2, MP3, CCSD, or DFT fail to describe various types of noncovalent systems (H-bonded, stacked, dispersion-controlled, etc.) with comparable accuracy. Therefore, novel methods are needed that have been parametrized toward noncovalent interactions, and existing benchmark data sets represent an important tool for the development of new methods providing reliable characteristics of noncovalent clusters. Our laboratory developed the first suitable data set of CCSD(T)/CBS interaction energies and geometries of various noncovalent complexes, called S22. Since its publication in 2006, it has frequently been applied in parametrization and/or verification of various wave function and density functional techniques. During the intense use of this data set, several inconsistencies emerged, such as the insufficient accuracy of the CCSD(T) correction term or its unbalanced character, which has triggered the introduction of a new, broader, and more accurate data set called the S66 data set. It contains not only 66 CCSD(T)/CBS interaction energies determined in the equilibrium geometries but also 1056 interaction energies calculated at the same level for nonequilibrium geometries. The S22 and S66 data sets have been used for the verification of various WFT methods, and the lowest RMSE (S66, in kcal/mol) was found for the recently introduced SCS-MI-CCSD/CBS (0.08), MP2.5/CBS (0.16), MP2.X/6-31G* (0.27), and SCS-MI-MP2/CBS (0.38) methods. Because of their computational economy, the MP2.5 and MP2.X/6-31G* methods can be recommended for highly accurate calculations of large complexes with up to 100 atoms. The evaluation of SQM methods was based only on the S22 data set, and because some of these methods have been parametrized toward the same data set, the respective results should be taken with caution. For really extended complexes such as protein-ligand systems, only the SMQ methods are applicable. After adding the corrections to the dispersion energy and H-bonding, several methods exhibit surprisingly low RMSE (even below 0.5 kcal/mol). Among the various SMQ methods, the PM6-DH2 can be recommended because of its computational efficiency and it can be used for optimization (which is not the case for other SQM methods). The PM6-DH2 is the base of our novel scoring function used in in silico drug design.
Big data benchmarking: how do DFT methods across the rungs of Jacob's ladder perform for a dataset of 122k CCSD(T) total atomization energies?

Abstract:Total atomization energies (TAEs) are a central quantity in density functional theory (DFT) benchmark studies. However, so far TAE databases obtained from experiment or high-level ab initio wavefunction theory included up to hundreds of TAEs. Here, we use the GDB-9 database of 133k CCSD(T) TAEs generated by Curtiss and co-workers [B. Narayanan, P. C. Redfern, R. S. Assary and L. A. Curtiss, Chem. Sci. , 2019, 10 , 7449] to evaluate the performance of 14 representative DFT methods across the rungs of Jacob's ladder (namely, PBE, BLYP, B97-D, M06-L, τ-HCTH, PBE0, B3LYP, B3PW91, ωB97X-D, τ-HCTHh, PW6B95, M06, M06-2X, and MN15). We first use the A 25 [PBE] diagnostic for nondynamical correlation to eliminate systems that potentially include significant multireference effects, for which the CCSD(T) TAEs might not be sufficiently reliable. The resulting database (denoted by GDB9-nonMR) includes 122k species. Of the considered functionals, B3LYP attains the best performance relative to the G4(MP2) reference TAEs, with a mean absolute deviation (MAD) of 4.09 kcal mol −1 . This first-generation hybrid functional, in which the three mixing coefficients were fitted against a small set of TAEs, is one of the few functionals that are not systematically biased towards overestimating the G4(MP2) TAEs, as demonstrated by a mean-signed deviation (MSD) of 0.45 kcal mol −1 . The relatively good performance of B3LYP is followed by the heavily parameterized M06-L meta -GGA functional, which attains a MAD of 6.24 kcal mol −1 . The PW6B95, M06, M06-2X, and MN15 functionals tend to systematically overestimate the G4(MP2) TAEs and attain MADs ranging between 18.69 (M06) and 28.54 (MN15) kcal mol −1 . However, PW6B95 and M06-2X exhibit particularly narrow error distributions. Thus, scaling their TAEs by an empirical scaling factor reduces their MADs to merely 3.38 (PW6B95) and 2.85 (M06-2X) kcal mol −1 . Empirical dispersion corrections ( e.g. , D3 and D4) are attractive, and therefore, their inclusion worsens the performance of methods that systematically overestimate the TAEs.

Assessment of the Performance of Density Functionals for Predicting Potential Energy Curves in Hydrogen Storage Applications

Abstract:The availability of accurate computational tools for modeling and simulation is vital to accelerate the discovery of materials capable of storing hydrogen (H2) under given parameters of pressure swing and temperature. Previously, we compiled the H2Bind275 dataset consisting of equilibrium geometries and assessed the performance of 55 density functionals over this dataset (Veccham, S. P.; Head-Gordon, M. J. Chem. Theory Comput., 2020, 16, 4963--4982). As it is crucial for computational tools to accurately model the entire potential energy curve (PEC), in addition to the equilibrium geometry, we have extended this dataset with 389 new data points to include two compressed and three elongated geometries along 78 PECs for H2 binding, forming the H2Bind78x7 dataset. Assessing the performance of 55 density functionals on this significantly larger and more comprehensive H2Bind78x7 dataset, we have identified the best performing density functionals for H2 binding applications: PBE0-DH, $\omega$B97X-V, $\omega$B97M-V, and DSD-PBEPBE-D3(BJ). Addition of Hartree Fock exchange improves the performance of density functionals, albeit not uniformly throughout the PEC. We recommend the usage of wB97X-V and wB97M-V density functionals as they give good performance for both geometries and energies. In addition, we have also identified B97M-V and B97M-rV as the best semi-local density functionals for predicting H2 binding energy at its equilibrium geometry.

Benchmarking TD-DFT and Wave Function Methods for Oscillator Strengths and Excited-State Dipole Moments

Abstract:Using a set of oscillator strengths and excited-state dipole moments of near full configuration interaction quality determined for small compounds, we benchmark the performances of several single-reference wave function methods [CC2, CCSD, CC3, CCSDT, ADC(2), and ADC(3/2)] and time-dependent density-functional theory (TD-DFT) with various functionals (B3LYP, PBE0, M06-2X, CAM-B3LYP, and ωB97X-D). We consider the impact of various gauges (length, velocity, and mixed) and formalisms: equation of motion versus linear response, relaxed versus unrelaxed orbitals, and so forth. Beyond the expected accuracy improvements and a neat decrease of formalism sensitivity when using higher-order wave function methods, the present contribution shows that, for both ADC(2) and CC2, the choice of gauge impacts more significantly the magnitude of the oscillator strengths than the choice of formalism and that CCSD yields a notable improvement on this transition property as compared to CC2. For the excited-state dipole moments, switching on orbital relaxation appreciably improves the accuracy of both ADC(2) and CC2 but has a rather small effect at the CCSD level. Going from ground to excited states, the typical errors on dipole moments for a given method tend to roughly triple. Interestingly, the ADC(3/2) oscillator strengths and dipoles are significantly more accurate than their ADC(2) counterparts, whereas the two models do deliver rather similar absolute errors for transition energies. Concerning TD-DFT, one finds: (i) a rather negligible impact of the gauge on oscillator strengths for all tested functionals (except for M06-2X); (ii) deviations of <i>ca.</i> 0.10 D on ground-state dipoles for all functionals; (iii) strong differences between excited-state dipoles obtained with, on the one hand, B3LYP and PBE0 and, on the other hand, M06-2X, CAM-B3LYP, and ωB97X-D, the latter group being markedly more accurate with the selected basis set; and (iv) the better overall performance of CAM-B3LYP for the two considered excited-state properties. Accurate description of van der Waals complexes by density functional theory including empirical corrections

Abstract:An empirical method to account for van der Waals interactions in practical calculations with the density functional theory (termed DFT-D) is tested for a wide variety of molecular complexes. As in previous schemes, the dispersive energy is described by damped interatomic potentials of the form C6R(-6). The use of pure, gradient-corrected density functionals (BLYP and PBE), together with the resolution-of-the-identity (RI) approximation for the Coulomb operator, allows very efficient computations for large systems. Opposed to previous work, extended AO basis sets of polarized TZV or QZV quality are employed, which reduces the basis set superposition error to a negligible extend. By using a global scaling factor for the atomic C6 coefficients, the functional dependence of the results could be strongly reduced. The "double counting" of correlation effects for strongly bound complexes is found to be insignificant if steep damping functions are employed. The method is applied to a total of 29 complexes of atoms and small molecules (Ne, CH4, NH3, H2O, CH3F, N2, F2, formic acid, ethene, and ethine) with each other and with benzene, to benzene, naphthalene, pyrene, and coronene dimers, the naphthalene trimer, coronene. H2O and four H-bonded and stacked DNA base pairs (AT and GC). In almost all cases, very good agreement with reliable theoretical or experimental results for binding energies and intermolecular distances is obtained. For stacked aromatic systems and the important base pairs, the DFT-D-BLYP model seems to be even superior to standard MP2 treatments that systematically overbind. The good results obtained suggest the approach as a practical tool to describe the properties of many important van der Waals systems in chemistry. Furthermore, the DFT-D data may either be used to calibrate much simpler (e.g., force-field) potentials or the optimized structures can be used as input for more accurate ab initio calculations of the interaction energies.

SBH17: Benchmark Database of Barrier Heights for Dissociative Chemisorption on Transition Metal Surfaces

Abstract:Accurate barriers for rate controlling elementary reactions on metal surfaces are key to understanding, controlling, and predicting the rate of heterogeneously catalyzed processes. While barrier heights for gas phase reactions have been extensively benchmarked, dissociative chemisorption barriers for the reactions of molecules on metal surfaces have received much less attention. The first database called SBH10 and containing 10 entries was recently constructed based on the specific reaction parameter approach to density functional theory (SRP-DFT) and experimental results. We have now constructed a new and improved database (SBH17) containing 17 entries based on SRP-DFT and experiments. For this new SBH17 benchmark study, we have tested three algorithms (high, medium, and light) for calculating barrier heights for dissociative chemisorption on metals, which we have named for the amount of computational effort involved in their use. We test the performance of 14 density functionals at the GGA, GGA+vdW-DF, and meta-GGA rungs. Our results show that, in contrast with the previous SBH10 study where the BEEF-vdW-DF2 functional seemed to be most accurate, the workhorse functional PBE and the MS2 density functional are the most accurate of the GGA and meta-GGA functionals tested. Of the GGA+vdW functionals tested, the SRP32-vdW-DF1 functional is the most accurate. Additionally, we found that the medium algorithm is accurate enough for assessing the performance of the density functionals tested, while it avoids geometry optimizations of minimum barrier geometries for each density functional tested. The medium algorithm does require metal lattice constants and interlayer distances that are optimized separately for each functional. While these are avoided in the light algorithm, this algorithm is found not to give a reliable description of functional performance. The combination of relative ease of use and demonstrated reliability of the medium algorithm will likely pave the way for incorporation of the SBH17 database in larger databases used for testing new density functionals and electronic structure methods.

Abstract:Abstract Advances in computational chemistry create an ongoing need for larger and higher-quality datasets that characterize noncovalent molecular interactions. We present three benchmark collections of quantum mechanical data, covering approximately 3,700 distinct types of interacting molecule pairs. The first collection, which we refer to as DES370K, contains interaction energies for more than 370,000 dimer geometries. These were computed using the coupled-cluster method with single, double, and perturbative triple excitations [CCSD(T)], which is widely regarded as the gold-standard method in electronic structure theory. Our second benchmark collection, a core representative subset of DES370K called DES15K, is intended for more computationally demanding applications of the data. Finally, DES5M, our third collection, comprises interaction energies for nearly 5,000,000 dimer geometries; these were calculated using SNS-MP2, a machine learning approach that provides results with accuracy comparable to that of our coupled-cluster training data. These datasets may prove useful in the development of density functionals, empirically corrected wavefunction-based approaches, semi-empirical methods, force fields, and models trained using machine learning methods.

Electron affinities of the first- and second- row atoms: benchmark ab initio and density functional calculations

Abstract:A benchmark ab initio and density functional (DFT) study has been carried out on the electron affinities of the first- and second-row atoms. The ab initio study involves basis sets of $spdfgh$ and $spdfghi$ quality, extrapolations to the 1-particle basis set limit, and a combination of the CCSD(T), CCSDT, and full CI electron correlation methods. Scalar relativistic and spin-orbit coupling effects were taken into account. On average, the best ab initio results agree to better than 0.001 eV with the most recent experimental results. Correcting for imperfections in the CCSD(T) method improves the mean absolute error by an order of magnitude, while for accurate results on the second-row atoms inclusion of relativistic corrections is essential. The latter are significantly overestimated at the SCF level; for accurate spin-orbit splitting constants of second-row atoms inclusion of (2s,2p) correlation is essential. In the DFT calculations it is found that results for the 1st-row atoms are very sensitive to the exchange functional, while those for second-row atoms are rather more sensitive to the correlation functional. While the LYP correlation functional works best for first-row atoms, its PW91 counterpart appears to be preferable for second-row atoms. Among ``pure DFT'' (nonhybrid) functionals, G96PW91 (Gill 1996 exchange combined with Perdew-Wang 1991 correlation) puts in the best overall performance. The best results overall are obtained with the 1-parameter hybrid modified Perdew-Wang (mPW1) exchange functionals of Adamo and Barone [J. Chem. Phys. {\bf 108}, 664 (1998)], with mPW1LYP yielding the best results for first-row, and mPW1PW91 for second-row atoms. Indications exist that a hybrid of the type $a$ mPW1LYP + $(1-a)$ mPW1PW91 yields better results than either of the constituent functionals.

“Mindless” DFT Benchmarking

Abstract:A diversity-oriented approach for the generation of thermochemical benchmark sets is presented. Test sets consisting of randomly generated "artificial molecules" (AMs) are proposed that rely on systematic constraints rather than uncontrolled chemical biases. In this way, the narrow structural space of chemical intuition is opened up and electronically difficult cases can be produced in an unforeseeable manner. For the calculation of chemically meaningful relative energies, AMs are systematically decomposed into small molecules (hydrides and diatomics). Two different example test sets containing eight-atom, single-reference, main group AMs with chemically very diverse and unusual structures are generated. Highly accurate all-electron, estimated CCSD(T)/complete basis set reference energies are also provided. They are used to benchmark the density functionals S-VWN, BP86, B-LYP, B97-D, PBE, TPSS, PBEh, BH-LYP, B3-PW91, B3-LYP, B2-PLYP, B2GP-PLYP, BMK, MPW1B95, M05, M05-2X, PW6B95, M06, M06-L, and M06-2X. In selected cases, an empirical dispersion correction (DFT-D) has been applied. Due to the composition of the sets, it is expected that a good performance indicates "robustness" in many different chemical applications. The results of a statistical analysis of the errors for the entire set with 165 entries (average reaction energy of 117 kcal/mol, dubbed as the MB08-165 set) perfectly fit to the "Jacob's ladder" metaphor for the ordering of density functionals according to their theoretical complexity. The mean absolute deviation (MAD) decreases very strongly from LDA (20 kcal/mol) to GGAs (MAD of about 10 kcal/mol) but then was less pronounced to hybrid-GGAs (MAD of about 6-8 kcal/mol). The best performance (MAD of 4.1-4.2 kcal/mol) is found for the (fifth-rung) double-hybrid functionals B2-PLYP-D and B2GP-PLYP-D, followed by the M06-2X meta-hybrid (MAD of 4.8 kcal/mol). The significance of the proposed approach for thermodynamic benchmarking is discussed and related to the observed performance ranking also regarding wave function based methods.

Abstract:835 Background: To evaluate the influence and the efficacy of the Epirubicin as a part of the FEC60 ACT in operable node positive breast cancer patients in a Brazilian single-center. METHODS We verified retrospectively our experience with FEC 60 as ACT in pre and postmenopausal, node positive, clinical staging II and III women patients with BC. Pts were submitted after surgery to receive Fluorouracil 600 mg/m2, Epirubicin 60 mg/m2 and Cyclophosphamide 600 mg/m2 every 28 days for 6 cycles. Pts who were ER+ and/or PR+ received Tamoxifen (TMX) 20 mg/day for 5 years after AC. Radiotherapy was also offered at the end of ACT if indicated. All patients were evaluated in terms of 5 year (y) Disease Free Survival (DFS) and Overall Survival (OS). A part of these pts could also be evaluated to 10 year DFS and OS. The most common toxicities (acute and chronic) and metastatic sites will also be reported. RESULTS Between July 1983 and October 1998 a total of 799 patients (ranging from 22 to 77 years old -median 37.79) were encountered and all of them were evaluated to 5 year (y) DFS and 5 y OS. 335 pts were assessed to 10y DFS and 10y OS. Approximately 63% of these patients received adjuvant TMX. Pts in pre and postmenopausal represented 61% and 39% respectively. The 5y DFS was 54% and the 5y OS after a minimal follow-up of 62.58 months (mo) was 70.9%.The 10y DFS was 47% and the 10y OS after a minimal follow-up of 122.98 mo was 53%. CONCLUSIONS Our 5y follow-up results are similar to those found in randomized studies reported in the literature (NCI-C Ma-5; ICCG; FASG-05) despite of the ACT interval greater than 21 days. Our results also demonstrated that polychemotherapy regimens with Epirubicin are active and well tolerated in the adjuvant treatment for Breast Cancer. Nevertheless, the randomized studies indicate that the greatest anticancer effect of Epirubicin requires doses ranging from 100 to 120 mg/m2. No significant financial relationships to disclose.

Abstract:A systematic theoretical investigation oil a series of dimeric complexes formed between some halocarbon molecules and electron donors has been carried out by employing both ab initio and density functional methods. Full geometry optimizations are performed at the Moller-Plesset second-order perturbation (MP2) level of theory with the Dunning's correlation-consistent basis set, aug-cc-pVDZ. Binding energies are extrapolated to the complete basis set (CBS) limit by means of two most commonly used extrapolation methods and the aug-cc-pVXZ (X = D, T, Q) basis sets series. The coupled cluster with single, double, and noniterative triple excitations [CCSD(T)] correction term, determined as a difference between CCSD(T) and MP2 binding energies, is estimated with the aug-cc-pVDZ basis set. In general, the inclusion of higher-order electron correlation effects leads to a repulsive correction with respect to those predicted at the MP2 level. The calculations described herein have shown that the CCSD(T) CBS limits yield binding energies with a range of -0.89 to -4.38 kcal/mol for the halogen-bonded complexes under study. The performance of several density functional theory (DFT) methods has been evaluated comparing the results with those obtained from MP2 and CCSD(T). It is shown that PBEKCIS, B97-1, and MPWLYP functionals provide accuracies close to the computationally very expensive ab initio methods. (C) 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. How Well Can Modern Density Functionals Predict Internuclear Distances at Transition States?

Abstract:We introduce a new database called TSG48 containing 48 transition state geometrical data (in particular, internuclear distances in transition state structures) for 16 main group reactions. The 16 reactions are the 12 reactions in the previously published DBH24 database (which includes hydrogen transfer reactions, heavy-atom transfer reactions, nucleophilic substitution reactions, and association reactions plus one unimolecular isomerization) plus four H-transfer reactions in which a hydrogen atom is abstracted by the methyl or hydroperoxyl radical from the two different positions in methanol. The data in TSG48 include data for four reactions that have previously been treated at a very high level in the literature. These data are used to test and validate methods that are affordable for the entire test suite, and the most accurate of these methods is found to be the multilevel BMC-CCSD method. The data that constitute the TSG48 database are therefore taken to consist of these very high level calculations for the four reactions where they are available and BMC-CCSD calculations for the other 12 reactions. The TSG48 database is used to assess the performance of the eight Minnesota density functionals from the M05-M08 families and 26 other high-performance and popular density functionals for locating transition state geometries. For comparison, the MP2 and QCISD wave function methods have also been tested for transition state geometries. The MC3BB and MC3MPW doubly hybrid functionals and the M08-HX and M06-2X hybrid meta-GGAs are found to have the best performance of all of the density functionals tested. M08-HX is the most highly recommended functional due to the excellent performance for all five subsets of TSG48, as well as having a lower cost when compared to doubly hybrid functionals. The mean absolute errors in transition state internuclear distances associated with breaking and forming bonds as calculated by the B2PLYP, MP2, and B3LYP methods are respectively about 2, 3, and 5 times larger than those calculated by MC3BB and M08-HX.
