Abstract:Abnormal body temperature is a natural indicator of illness. Infrared thermography (IRT) is a fast, passive, non-contact and non-invasive alternative to conventional clinical thermometers for monitoring body temperature. Besides, IRT can also map body surface temperature remotely. Last five decades witnessed a steady increase in the utility of thermal imaging cameras to obtain correlations between the thermal physiology and skin temperature. IRT has been successfully used in diagnosis of breast cancer, diabetes neuropathy and peripheral vascular disorders. It has also been used to detect problems associated with gynecology, kidney transplantation, dermatology, heart, neonatal physiology, fever screening and brain imaging. With the advent of modern infrared cameras, data acquisition and processing techniques, it is now possible to have real time high resolution thermographic images, which is likely to surge further research in this field. The present efforts are focused on automatic analysis of temperature distribution of regions of interest and their statistical analysis for detection of abnormalities. This critical review focuses on advances in the area of medical IRT. The basics of IRT, essential theoretical background, the procedures adopted for various measurements and applications of IRT in various medical fields are discussed in this review. Besides background information is provided for beginners for better understanding of the subject.

Abstract:In recent years, the usefulness of infrared thermography (IRT) as a valuable supplementary imaging method in medical diagnostics, as well as for assessing the effects of the treatment of musculoskeletal injuries, has been increasingly confirmed. At the same time, great importance is attached to the standards of thermographic research, the fulfillment of which determines the correct methodology and interpretation of the results. This article discusses the medical applications of infrared thermography in musculoskeletal system diseases, with particular emphasis on its usefulness in assessing the therapeutic effects of physical treatments used in rehabilitation. The literature from the last decade that is available in the Medline and Web of Science databases has been reviewed. Among the physiotherapeutic methods used, the following were selected that directly affect the musculoskeletal system: cryotherapy, laser therapy, electrotherapy, diathermy, and massage. The article summarizes all the guidelines and recommendations for IR imaging in medicine and rehabilitation.

Abstract:For many years, the role of thermometry was limited to systemic (core body temperature) measurements (e.g., pulmonary catheter) or its approximation using skin/mucosa (e.g., axillary, oral, or rectal) temperature measurements. With recent advances in material science and technology, thermal measurements went beyond core body temperature measurements and found their way in many medical specialties. The article consists of two primary parts. In the first part we overviewed current clinical thermal measurement technologies across two dimensions: (a) direct vs. indirect and (b) single-point vs. multiple-point temperature measurements. In the second part, we focus primarily on clinical applications in wound care, surgery, and sports medicine. The primary focus here is the thermographic imaging modality. However, other thermal modalities are included where relevant for these clinical applications. The literature review identified two primary use scenarios for thermographic imaging: inflammation-based and perfusion-based. These scenarios rely on local (topical) temperature measurements, which are different from systemic (core body temperature) measurements. Quantifying these types of diseases benefits from thermographic imaging of an area in contrast to single-point measurements. The wide adoption of the technology would be accelerated by larger studies supporting the clinical utility of thermography.

Abstract:Objective Inflammation plays a central role in the pathophysiology of rheumatic diseases as well as in osteoarthritis. Temperature, which can be quantified using infrared thermography, provides information about the inflammatory component of joint diseases. This systematic review aims at assessing infrared thermography potential and limitations in these pathologies. Design A systematic review was performed on 3 major databases: PubMed, Cochrane library, and Web of Science, on clinical reports of any level of evidence in English language, published from 1990 to May 2021, with infrared thermography used for diagnosis of osteoarthritis and rheumatic diseases, monitoring disease progression, or response to treatment. Relevant data were extracted, collected in a database, and analyzed for the purpose of this systematic review. Results Of 718 screened articles 32 were found to be eligible for inclusion, for a total of 2094 patients. Nine studies reported the application to osteoarthritis, 21 to rheumatic diseases, 2 on both. The publication trend showed an increasing interest in the last decade. Seven studies investigated the correlation of temperature changes with osteoarthritis, 16 with rheumatic diseases, and 2 with both, whereas 2 focused on the pre-post evaluation to investigate treatment results in patients with osteoarthritis and 5 in patients with rheumatic diseases. A correlation was shown between thermal findings and disease presence and stage, as well as the clinical assessment of disease activity and response to treatment, supporting infrared thermography role in the study and management of rheumatic diseases and osteoarthritis. Conclusions The systematic literature review showed an increasing interest in this technology, with several applications in different joints affected by inflammatory and degenerative pathologies. Infrared thermography proved to be a simple, accurate, noninvasive, and radiation-free method, which could be used in addition to the currently available tools for screening, diagnosis, monitoring of disease progression, and response to medical treatment.

Abstract:Introduction Infrared thermography (IRT) is a non-contact, non-ionising imaging modality, providing a visual representation of temperature distribution across a surface. Methods We conducted a systematic search of indexed and grey literature for studies investigating IRT applications involving patients in acute care settings. Studies were categorised and described along themes identified iteratively using narrative synthesis. Quality appraisal of included studies was performed using the Quality Assessment tool for Diagnostic Accuracy Studies. Results Of 1,060 unique records, 30 studies were included. These were conducted in emergency departments and intensive care units involving adult, paediatric and neonatal patients. IRT was studied for the diagnosis, monitoring or risk stratification of a wide range of individual conditions. IRT was predominantly used to display thermal change associated with localised inflammation or microcirculatory dysfunction. Existing research is largely at an early developmental stage. Discussion We recommend that high quality diagnostic validation studies are now required for some clinical applications. IRT has the potential to be a valuable tool in the acute care setting and represents an important area for future research particularly when combined with advances in machine learning technology. Abstract:Thermography provides non-invasive, radiation-free diagnostic imaging. Despite the extensive literature on medical thermography, a comprehensive overview of current applications is lacking. Hence, the aim of this scoping review is to identify the medical applications of passive infrared thermography and to catalogue the technical and environmental modalities. The diagnostic performance of thermography and the existence of specific reference data are evaluated, and research gaps and future tasks identified. The entire review process followed the Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) approach and the results are reported according to PRISMA-ScR guidelines. The scoping review protocol is registered at the Open Science Framework (OSF). PubMed, CENTRAL, Embase, Web of Science, OpenGrey, OSF, and PROSPERO were searched using pretested search strategies based on the Population, Concept, Context (PCC) approach. According to the eligibility criteria, references were screened by two researchers independently. Seventy-two research articles were identified describing screening, diagnostic, or monitoring studies investigating the potential of thermography in a total of 17,314 participants within 38 different health conditions across 13 therapeutic areas. The use of several camera models from various manufacturers is described. These and other facts and figures are compiled and presented in a detailed, descriptive tabular and visual format. Thermography offers promising diagnostic capabilities, alone or in addition to conventional methods.
The auxiliary field method in quantum mechanical four-fermi models: a study towards chiral condensation in QED

Abstract:A study for checking the validity of the auxiliary field method (AFM) is made in quantum mechanical four-fermi models which act as prototypes of models for chiral symmetry breaking in quantum electrodynamics. It has been shown that AFM, defined by an insertion of Gaussian identity to path integral formulae and by the loop expansion, becomes more accurate when taking higher order terms into account under the bosonic model with a quartic coupling in 0- and 1-dimensions as well as the model with a four-fermi interaction in 0-dimension. The case is also confirmed in terms of two models with the four-fermi interaction among N species in 1-dimension (the quantum mechanical four-fermi models): higher order corrections lead us towards the exact energy of the ground state for a whole region including the weak as well as the strong coupling. It is found that the second model belongs to a ‘WKB exact class’ that has no higher order corrections other than the lowest correction. Discussions are also made for unreliability on the continuous time representation of path integration and for a new model of QED as a suitable probe for chiral symmetry breaking.

Abstract:AbstractPurposeMedical infrared thermography (IRT) was used as a complementary means for the clinical evaluation of musculoskeletal trauma and progression of chronic tibial osteomyelitis.MethodsTwenty-two adult patients with a medical diagnosis of chronic tibial osteomyelitis were followed up by IRT performed along with standard radiography. Thermal data of the affected limb were compared with those of the healthy contralateral limb based on the thermal profile of the lower limbs as per the medical thermography guideline (32 °C). Data were acquired in the following regions of the lower limb: proximal tibia, diaphysis, and distal tibia, using a FLIR infrared camera, and data were processed using MATLAB®.ResultsFor patients with active infections, an increase in the average temperature of the affected limb above + 1.0 °C was observed when compared with the temperature of the contralateral. The wound region of the patients showed an increased temperature (32.3 °C) compared with the temperature of the contralateral (31.4 °C). In contrast, in latent infections, the thermal differences were small, generally below 0.3 °C, and thus were within the threshold of normality. In contrast, in areas diagnosed with reduced blood supply, the affected limb showed an average temperature up to − 5.7 °C below normal. Additionally, the initial temperature range (26.5 to 34.5 °C) decreased during the treatment to 29.8 to 34.1 °C, indicating a convergence toward normality.ConclusionIRT has significant potential as a complementary imaging modality in the follow-up of patients with bone lesions with a diagnosis of osteomyelitis as it does not use ionizing radiation, thus allowing repetitive use as desired. Thermal images show important physiological information related to vascularization necessary for bone repair, as well as provide a good indication of the boundary of the infected area, adjacent to the trauma, which is useful for positioning the radiography equipment. However, it should be noted that IRT cannot replace other medical imaging techniques, as it provides information about the skin and cannot directly evaluate the interior of the body.

Abstract: A 27-year-old woman, who is being successfully treated for HIV, has mostly normal results from physical examinations and feels well. Yet she had a chest X-ray that showed prominent perihilar adenopathy and a miliary pattern in all lung fields. Medical records from an open lung biopsy, photographs taken during the biopsy, and the pathology reports reveal histoplasma capsulatum infection, a rare occurrence in late-stage HIV infection, especially without concurrent symptoms including fever, wasting, cytopenias, and oral and intestinal ulcerations. It is not known whether the patient's highly active antiretroviral therapy allowed her to react to this organism as immunocompetent persons do, which is with well-formed granulomas. Her travel history was evaluated and showed that she had briefly passed through histoplasma-endemic areas of the southern United States. However, tests for histoplasma antigens returned negative, as did tests for serum histoplasma antibodies. Two immunohistochemical stainings for PCP were also both negative. The patient is being treated with Itraconazole, and may also be treated with a 3-week course of atovaquone for recurrent PCP.

Abstract:This narrative review aims to summarize in one paper all the known applications of infrared (IR) in medical thermography, medical applications, and the standardization protocols and basic conditions for thermal imaging in diagnostic medicine until December 2023. This technology primarily harnesses naturally emitted IR radiation from the subject's surface. These IR radiations emitted from the human body surface have been used in different fields of medical imaging to diagnose different kinds of diseases, disorders, and congenital anomalies and aid in medical therapy. Thermal imaging is a noninvasive, non-contact diagnostic technique used to measure the temperature of the human body. Therefore, IR thermal imaging has drawn significant attention and interest in recent years in a broad range of commercial applications due to its unique and superior properties. This commercial development has been supported by fundamental and applied research studies.

Abstract:Although warmth is a key sign of inflammatory skin lesions, an objective assessment and follow‐up of the temperature changes are rarely done in dermatology. The recent availability of accurate, sensitive and cost‐effective thermography devices has made the implementation of thermography in clinical settings feasible. The aim of this scoping review is to summarize the evidence around the value and pitfalls of infrared thermography (IRT) when used in the dermatology clinic. A systematic literature search was done for original articles using IRT in skin disorders. The results concerning the potential of IRT for diagnosis, severity staging and monitoring of skin diseases were collected. The data on the sensitivity and specificity of IRT were extracted. Numerous studies have investigated IRT in various skin diseases, revealing its significant value in wound management, skin infections (e.g. cellulitis), vascular abnormalities and deep skin inflammation (e.g. hidradenitis suppurativa). For other dermatological applications such as the interpretation of intradermal and patch allergy testing, hyper−/anhidrosis, erythromelalgia, cold urticaria and lymph node metastases more complex calculations, provocation tests or active cooling procedures are required. Dermatologists should be aware of a learning curve of IRT and recognize factors contributing to false positive and false negative results. Nonetheless, enough evidence is available to recommend IRT as a supplement to the clinical evaluation for the diagnosis, severity and follow‐up of several skin diseases.

Abstract:BACKGROUND: Infrared thermal imaging captures the infrared radiation emitted by the skin surface. The thermograms contain valuable information, since the temperature distribution can be used to characterize physiological anomalies. Thus, the use of infrared thermal imaging (IRT) has been studied as a possible medical tool to aid in the diagnosis of skin oncological lesions. The aim of this review is to assess the current state of the applications of IRT in skin neoplasm identification and characterization.METHODS: A literature survey was conducted using the reference bibliographic databases: Scopus, PubMed and ISI Web of Science. Keywords (thermography, infrared imaging, thermal imaging and skin cancer) were combined and its presence was verified at the title and abstract of the article or as a main topic. Only articles published after 2013 were considered during this search.RESULTS: In total, 55 articles were encountered, resulting in 14 publications for revision after applying the exclusion criteria. It was denoted that IRT have been used to characterize and distinguish between malignant and benign neoplasms and different skin cancer types. IRT has also been successfully applied in the treatment evaluation of these types of lesions.CONCLUSION: Trends and future challenges have been established to improve the application of IRT in this field, disclosing that dynamic thermography is a promising tool for early identification of oncological skin conditions.

Abstract:INTRODUCTION: The use of thermography in the medical field has been experiencing a renaissance due to advances in the infrared thermographic imaging technology, which improves thermographic equipment and promises cost saving and increased safety. Dermatology is one of the most promising fields of application among the medical areas with potential for the use of thermography.OBJECTIVE: To review the findings on this subject and to describe the use of such technique for dermatology and aesthetic applications.METHODS: A bibliographic survey was carried out, selecting relevant publications and guidelines, focused on monitoring medical diagnostic applications and benefits of thermography for dermatology, inflammatory skin diseases, and aesthetic applications.RESULTS: Inflammatory skin diseases lead to changes of the IRT image. A quantification of treatment effects and monitoring changes on skin can be possible by repeated measurements over time.CONCLUSION: Infrared imaging is a noninvasive, powerful tool in the diagnosis and clinical management of skin conditions and monitoring of aesthetic procedures.

Abstract:The Switched Antenna Transmit Diversity (SATD) scheme is a promising transmit diversity technique to improve the performance in High Speed Uplink Packet Access (HSUPA) systems. Antenna switching rests on a technique where only one antenna is active at a time even if the UE is equipped with multiple transmit antennas. Switching and antenna selection can be based on different methods and criteria and this paper provides simulative analysis of three different open loop antenna switching algorithms for the HSUPA systems. Furthermore, the focus will be on evaluating corresponding system level performance compared to the single Tx antenna performance when bursty traffic is assumed. The studies show that there are achievable gains and thus system performance may be enhanced by applying the antenna switching scheme, especially when the mobile velocity is low.

Abstract:Thermography is a technique that involves using a thermal camera to make a thermogram image that depicts the quantity of infrared energy emitted, transmitted, and reflected by an object. Body surface temperature monitoring, which varies when blood flow increases or decreases due to clinical irregularities, has been frequently utilised to diagnose medical problems such as breast cancer, diabetes neuropathy, and peripheral vascular disorders using thermography. Thermography has become a significant tool, particularly for fever screening during infectious disease epidemics such as Ebola and COVID-19, due to its non-invasive and non-contact nature. Thermography is a sensory instrument that can be particularly valuable in protecting human health when paired with thermal physiology data. In this review, we analyze and compare several thermography processes and aspects to come up with the optimal methodology for use in the medical field.

Abstract:Assessment of wounds based on visual appearance has poor inter- and intra-rater reliability and it is difficult to differentiate between inflammation and infection. Thermography is a user-friendly quantitative image technique that collects the skin surface temperature pattern of the wound area and immediately visualizes the temperatures as a rainbow coloured diagram. The aim of this scoping review is to map and summarize the existing evidence on how thermography has been used to assess signs of inflammation in humans and animals with surgical or traumatic wounds. The method follows the Joanna Briggs Institute methodology. The databases searched were PubMed, Embase, CINAHL and Cochrane Library. 3798 sources were identified, 2666 were screened on title and abstract, 99 on full text and 19 studies were included for review. We found that the literature is diverse and originates from a variety of scientific fields. Thermography has been used to detect and predict inflammation and infection in surgical wounds. Grading systems based on the visual appearance correlate to temperature patterns detected with thermography. The general tendency is that thermography detects the temperature in a wound with inflammation to be warmer than a reference area or the same skin area before surgery. In a surgical wound the temperature is elevated 1-2 weeks after surgery due to natural physiological inflammation that induces healing, after 2 weeks the temperature of the wound area slowly and steady decreases to baseline over 1-3 months. If a secondary temperature peak happens during the healing phase of a surgical wound, it is likely that infection has occurred. Modern handheld thermographic cameras might be a promising tool for the clinician to quickly quantify the temperature pattern of surgical wounds to distinguish between inflammation and infection. However, firm evidence supporting infection thermography surveillance of surgical wounds as a technique is missing.
