Abstract:The thermal infrared image of the human body directly reflects the temperature distribution of the human body surface. Based on in-depth analysis, the infrared image can provide intelligent diagnosis assistance for human diseases. This paper proposed two preprocessing algorithms, i.e., upper-lower body image-stitching and body image partitioning, for medical infrared image analysis. In the image stitching stage, the human body is first extracted from the background by local thresholding based on the characteristics of the actual imaging environment. Then the upper and lower body images are aligned and fused using binary and grayscale template matching. In the image partitioning stage, the key points of the part area are determined by the extremum-point analysis of the human contour. The human body is then partitioned into regions including head, trunk, limbs, etc. Experiments show that the proposed preprocessing algorithms produce satisfactory results in image-stitching and portioning, and can effectively support the quantitative and qualitative analysis of human body temperature distribution.
The auxiliary field method in quantum mechanical four-fermi models: a study towards chiral condensation in QED

Abstract:A study for checking the validity of the auxiliary field method (AFM) is made in quantum mechanical four-fermi models which act as prototypes of models for chiral symmetry breaking in quantum electrodynamics. It has been shown that AFM, defined by an insertion of Gaussian identity to path integral formulae and by the loop expansion, becomes more accurate when taking higher order terms into account under the bosonic model with a quartic coupling in 0- and 1-dimensions as well as the model with a four-fermi interaction in 0-dimension. The case is also confirmed in terms of two models with the four-fermi interaction among N species in 1-dimension (the quantum mechanical four-fermi models): higher order corrections lead us towards the exact energy of the ground state for a whole region including the weak as well as the strong coupling. It is found that the second model belongs to a ‘WKB exact class’ that has no higher order corrections other than the lowest correction. Discussions are also made for unreliability on the continuous time representation of path integration and for a new model of QED as a suitable probe for chiral symmetry breaking.

Abstract:Abnormal body temperature is a natural indicator of illness. Infrared thermography (IRT) is a fast, passive, non-contact and non-invasive alternative to conventional clinical thermometers for monitoring body temperature. Besides, IRT can also map body surface temperature remotely. Last five decades witnessed a steady increase in the utility of thermal imaging cameras to obtain correlations between the thermal physiology and skin temperature. IRT has been successfully used in diagnosis of breast cancer, diabetes neuropathy and peripheral vascular disorders. It has also been used to detect problems associated with gynecology, kidney transplantation, dermatology, heart, neonatal physiology, fever screening and brain imaging. With the advent of modern infrared cameras, data acquisition and processing techniques, it is now possible to have real time high resolution thermographic images, which is likely to surge further research in this field. The present efforts are focused on automatic analysis of temperature distribution of regions of interest and their statistical analysis for detection of abnormalities. This critical review focuses on advances in the area of medical IRT. The basics of IRT, essential theoretical background, the procedures adopted for various measurements and applications of IRT in various medical fields are discussed in this review. Besides background information is provided for beginners for better understanding of the subject.

Abstract:Temperature is a parameter that acts as a valuable indicator for understanding persisting disorders and illnesses in the human body. Body surface temperature is measured through the skin and the body’s internal temperature is measured through the mouth or rectum, which are used as vital information reflecting the state of thermo-regulation, a sub-process of the body's homeostasis, which is required for its normal functioning. In a state of functional imbalance, the affected region emits thermal radiation that is above or below the normal range. Thermal imaging of body regions is a beneficial means of detection of such thermal imbalances and the temperature data of each image can be analyzed quantitatively to be able to correlate the results clinically. In this article, a computer-based GUI – MedTherm Image Viewer and Analysis Tool developed in MATLAB is proposed for the processing and quantitative evaluation of thermal images for the purpose of providing supportive aid to the existing medical diagnostic procedures. The suggested graphical user interface (GUI) is beneficial in computing statistical features based on histograms of thermal images that have been recognized in numerous other studies as valuable parameters that assist in clinical diagnostic procedures.
Use of Infrared Thermography in Medical Diagnosis, Screening, and Disease Monitoring: A Scoping Review

Abstract:Thermography provides non-invasive, radiation-free diagnostic imaging. Despite the extensive literature on medical thermography, a comprehensive overview of current applications is lacking. Hence, the aim of this scoping review is to identify the medical applications of passive infrared thermography and to catalogue the technical and environmental modalities. The diagnostic performance of thermography and the existence of specific reference data are evaluated, and research gaps and future tasks identified. The entire review process followed the Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) approach and the results are reported according to PRISMA-ScR guidelines. The scoping review protocol is registered at the Open Science Framework (OSF). PubMed, CENTRAL, Embase, Web of Science, OpenGrey, OSF, and PROSPERO were searched using pretested search strategies based on the Population, Concept, Context (PCC) approach. According to the eligibility criteria, references were screened by two researchers independently. Seventy-two research articles were identified describing screening, diagnostic, or monitoring studies investigating the potential of thermography in a total of 17,314 participants within 38 different health conditions across 13 therapeutic areas. The use of several camera models from various manufacturers is described. These and other facts and figures are compiled and presented in a detailed, descriptive tabular and visual format. Thermography offers promising diagnostic capabilities, alone or in addition to conventional methods.

Abstract:This narrative review aims to summarize in one paper all the known applications of infrared (IR) in medical thermography, medical applications, and the standardization protocols and basic conditions for thermal imaging in diagnostic medicine until December 2023. This technology primarily harnesses naturally emitted IR radiation from the subject's surface. These IR radiations emitted from the human body surface have been used in different fields of medical imaging to diagnose different kinds of diseases, disorders, and congenital anomalies and aid in medical therapy. Thermal imaging is a noninvasive, non-contact diagnostic technique used to measure the temperature of the human body. Therefore, IR thermal imaging has drawn significant attention and interest in recent years in a broad range of commercial applications due to its unique and superior properties. This commercial development has been supported by fundamental and applied research studies.

Abstract:Thermography is a technique that involves using a thermal camera to make a thermogram image that depicts the quantity of infrared energy emitted, transmitted, and reflected by an object. Body surface temperature monitoring, which varies when blood flow increases or decreases due to clinical irregularities, has been frequently utilised to diagnose medical problems such as breast cancer, diabetes neuropathy, and peripheral vascular disorders using thermography. Thermography has become a significant tool, particularly for fever screening during infectious disease epidemics such as Ebola and COVID-19, due to its non-invasive and non-contact nature. Thermography is a sensory instrument that can be particularly valuable in protecting human health when paired with thermal physiology data. In this review, we analyze and compare several thermography processes and aspects to come up with the optimal methodology for use in the medical field.

Abstract:The human’s temperature is little known and important to the diagnosis of diseases, according to most researchers and health workers.In ancient medicine, doctors may treat patients with wet mud or slurry clay. The part that would dry up first was considered the diseased part when either of these spread over the body. This can be done today with thermal cameras generating pictures with electromagnetic frequencies. Inflammation and blockage areas that predict cancer without radiation or touch may be detected by thermography. It can be used before any visible symptoms occur as a great advantage in medical testing. Machine learning (ML) is used in this paper as statistical techniques to give software programs the capacity to learn from information without being directly coded. ML can help to do so by learning these thermal scans and identifying suspected areas where a doctor needs to research more. Thermal photography is a comparatively better alternative to other methods that need sophisticated equipment, enabling machines to provide an easier and more effective approach to clinics and hospitals.

Advanced integrated technique in breast cancer thermography

Abstract:Thermography is a passive and non-contact imaging technique used extensively in the medical arena, but in relation to breast care, it has not been accepted as being on a par with mammography. This paper proposes the analysis of thermograms with the use of artificial neural networks (ANN) and bio-statistical methods, including regression and receiver operating characteristics (ROC). It is desired that through these approaches, highly accurate diagnosis using thermography techniques can be achieved. The suggested method is a multi-pronged approach comprising of linear regression, radial basis function network (RBFN) and ROC analysis. It is a novel, integrative and powerful technique that can be used to analyse large amounts of complicated measured data such as temperature values extracted from abnormal and healthy breast thermograms. The use of regression allows the correlation between the variables and the actual health status of the subject, which is decided by other traditional means such as the gold standard of mammography for breast cancer detection. This is important as it helps to select the appropriate variables to be used as inputs for building the neural network. RBFN is next trained to produce the desired outcome that is either positive or negative. When this is done, the RBFN possess the ability to predict the outcome when there are new input variables. The advantages of using RBFN include fast training of superior classification and decision-making abilities as compared to other networks such as backpropagation. Lastly, ROC is applied to evaluate the sensitivity, specificity and accuracy of the outcome for the RBFN test files. The proposed technique has an accuracy rate of 80.95%, with 100% sensitivity and 70.6% specificity in identifying breast cancer. The results are promising as compared to clinical examination by experienced radiologists, which has an accuracy rate of approximately 60-70%. To sum up, technological advances in the field of infrared thermography over the last 20 years warrant a re-evaluation of the use of high-resolution digital thermographic camera systems in the diagnosis and management of breast cancer. Thermography seeks to identify the presence of a tumour by the elevated temperature associated with increase blood flow and cellular activity. Of particular interest would be investigation in younger women and men, for whom mammography is either unsuitable or of limited effectiveness. The paper evaluated the high-definition digital infrared thermographic technology and knowledge base; and supports the development of future diagnostic and therapeutic services in breast cancer imaging. Through the use of integrative ANN and bio-statistical methods, advances are made in thermography application with regard to achieving a higher level of consistency. For breast cancer care, it has become possible to use thermography as a powerful adjunct and biomarker tool, together with mammography for diagnosis purposes.

Abstract:Early diagnosis and in time treatment of tumors are of great significance for saving patients' lives.As a non-invasive,quick,noncontact and cost-effective functional imaging modality,the technology of far-infrared thermography has become one of the most important ways for early cancer detection.However,the current diagnosis is still quite subjective and inaccurate,since it is heavily dependent on the experiences of a clinician.To overcome these barriers,this paper is dedicated to combine the medical far-infrared image database technology and computer automatic contrasting analysis together in order to improve the diagnosis accuracy.The feasibility and basic elements of the medical infrared thermography database were evaluated.Advantages and shortcomings of existing methods were analyzed.The preliminarily realized software has been able to retrieve confirmed clinical cases,supply contrasting images,and provide diagnosis references for clinicians,researchers or even self-checkers.The present work is expected to lay the foundation for achieving an objective,precise and low cost early tumor diagnosis.

Abstract:For many years, the role of thermometry was limited to systemic (core body temperature) measurements (e.g., pulmonary catheter) or its approximation using skin/mucosa (e.g., axillary, oral, or rectal) temperature measurements. With recent advances in material science and technology, thermal measurements went beyond core body temperature measurements and found their way in many medical specialties. The article consists of two primary parts. In the first part we overviewed current clinical thermal measurement technologies across two dimensions: (a) direct vs. indirect and (b) single-point vs. multiple-point temperature measurements. In the second part, we focus primarily on clinical applications in wound care, surgery, and sports medicine. The primary focus here is the thermographic imaging modality. However, other thermal modalities are included where relevant for these clinical applications. The literature review identified two primary use scenarios for thermographic imaging: inflammation-based and perfusion-based. These scenarios rely on local (topical) temperature measurements, which are different from systemic (core body temperature) measurements. Quantifying these types of diseases benefits from thermographic imaging of an area in contrast to single-point measurements. The wide adoption of the technology would be accelerated by larger studies supporting the clinical utility of thermography.

Abstract:Breast cancer is not preventable. To reduce the death rate and improve the survival chances of breast cancer patients, early and accurate detection is the only panacea. Delay in diagnosis of this disease causes 60% of deaths. Thermal imaging is a low-risk modality for early breast cancer decision making without injecting any form of energy into the human body. Thermography as a screening tool was first introduced and well accepted in 1956. However, a study in 1977 found that it lagged behind other screening tools and is subjective. Soon after, its use was discontinued. This review discusses various screening tools used to detect breast cancer with a focus on thermography along with their advantages and shortcomings. With the maturation of thermography equipment and technological advances, this technique is emerging and has become the refocus of many biomedical researchers across the globe in the past decade. This study dispenses an exhaustive review of the work done related to interpretation of breast thermal variations and confers the discipline, frameworks, and methodologies used by different authors to diagnose breast cancer. Different performance metrics like accuracy, specificity, and sensitivity have also been examined. This paper outlines the most pressing research gaps for future work to improvise the accuracy of results for diagnosis of breast abnormalities using image processing tools, mathematical modelling and artificial intelligence. However, supplementary research is needed to affirm the potential of this technology for predicting breast cancer risk effectively. Altogether, our findings inform that it is a promising research problem and a potential solution for early detection of breast cancer in younger women.

Abstract:The author outlines the historical attempts made to use infrared thermography for breast cancer detection. He concludes that the technique was a great idea that failed. One can produce good thermal images of the breast, and these images often show features that reflect disease. But the association between skin temperature and breast cancer is too weak to be useful, given the need to detect small tumors and the statistics of breast cancer. However, infrared imaging has experienced great progress in recent years, which is a result of military research in night vision. Several groups in the U.S., Canada, and Japan are experimenting with advanced thermographic systems for detection of breast cancer. This work, the "new thermography", is still in preliminary stages and no extensive clinical studies have apparently been published. The obvious hope is that improved thermal sensitivity will result in improved sensitivity as a medical test -a plausible but so far unproven hypothesis. Detection of breast cancer graphically illustrates the very large difference between getting a medical technology to "work" in a technical or engineering sense, and in meeting the needs of physicians and their patients. There is also a difference between observing promising results with individual patients, and in showing that a technique will benefit the many patients with whom it will be used. We would do our students a favor by helping them to understand the difference. And those who fail to learn the lessons of the past may have to repeat them again.

Abstract: A 27-year-old woman, who is being successfully treated for HIV, has mostly normal results from physical examinations and feels well. Yet she had a chest X-ray that showed prominent perihilar adenopathy and a miliary pattern in all lung fields. Medical records from an open lung biopsy, photographs taken during the biopsy, and the pathology reports reveal histoplasma capsulatum infection, a rare occurrence in late-stage HIV infection, especially without concurrent symptoms including fever, wasting, cytopenias, and oral and intestinal ulcerations. It is not known whether the patient's highly active antiretroviral therapy allowed her to react to this organism as immunocompetent persons do, which is with well-formed granulomas. Her travel history was evaluated and showed that she had briefly passed through histoplasma-endemic areas of the southern United States. However, tests for histoplasma antigens returned negative, as did tests for serum histoplasma antibodies. Two immunohistochemical stainings for PCP were also both negative. The patient is being treated with Itraconazole, and may also be treated with a 3-week course of atovaquone for recurrent PCP.

Abstract:Abstract Background In biomedicine, infrared thermography is the most promising technique among other conventional methods for revealing the differences in skin temperature, resulting from the irregular temperature dispersion, which is the significant signaling of diseases and disorders in human body. Given the process of detecting emitted thermal radiation of human body temperature by infrared imaging, we, in this study, present the current utility of thermal camera models namely FLIR and SEEK in biomedical applications as an extension of our previous article. Results The most significant result is the differences between image qualities of the thermograms captured by thermal camera models. In other words, the image quality of the thermal images in FLIR One is higher than SEEK Compact PRO. However, the thermal images of FLIR One are noisier than SEEK Compact PRO since the thermal resolution of FLIR One is 160 × 120 while it is 320 × 240 in SEEK Compact PRO. Conclusion Detecting and revealing the inhomogeneous temperature distribution on the injured toe of the subject, we, in this paper, analyzed the imaging results of two different smartphone-based thermal camera models by making comparison among various thermograms. Utilizing the feasibility of the proposed method for faster and comparative diagnosis in biomedical problems is the main contribution of this study.

Abstract:BACKGROUND: Although thermal imaging can be a valuable technology in the prevention and management of diabetic foot disease, it is not yet widely used in clinical practice. Technological advancement in infrared imaging increases its application range. The aim was to explore the first steps in the applicability of high-resolution infrared thermal imaging for noninvasive automated detection of signs of diabetic foot disease.METHODS: The plantar foot surfaces of 15 diabetes patients were imaged with an infrared camera (resolution, 1.2 mm/pixel): 5 patients had no visible signs of foot complications, 5 patients had local complications (e.g., abundant callus or neuropathic ulcer), and 5 patients had diffuse complications (e.g., Charcot foot, infected ulcer, or critical ischemia). Foot temperature was calculated as mean temperature across pixels for the whole foot and for specified regions of interest (ROIs).RESULTS: No differences in mean temperature >1.5 °C between the ipsilateral and the contralateral foot were found in patients without complications. In patients with local complications, mean temperatures of the ipsilateral and the contralateral foot were similar, but temperature at the ROI was >2 °C higher compared with the corresponding region in the contralateral foot and to the mean of the whole ipsilateral foot. In patients with diffuse complications, mean temperature differences of >3 °C between ipsilateral and contralateral foot were found.CONCLUSIONS: With an algorithm based on parameters that can be captured and analyzed with a high-resolution infrared camera and a computer, it is possible to detect signs of diabetic foot disease and to discriminate between no, local, or diffuse diabetic foot complications. As such, an intelligent telemedicine monitoring system for noninvasive automated detection of signs of diabetic foot disease is one step closer. Future studies are essential to confirm and extend these promising early findings.

Abstract:Infrared medical examination finds the diseases through scanning the overall human body temperature and obtaining the temperature anomalies of the corresponding parts with the infrared thermal equipment. In order to obtain the temperature anomalies and disease parts, Infrared Medical Image Visualization and Anomalies Analysis Method is proposed in this paper. Firstly, visualize the original data into a single channel gray image: secondly, turn the normalized gray image into a pseudo color image; thirdly, a method of background segmentation is taken to filter out background noise; fourthly, cluster those special pixels with the breadth-first search algorithm; lastly, mark the regions of the temperature anomalies or disease parts. The test is shown that it’s an efficient and accurate way to intuitively analyze and diagnose body disease parts through the temperature anomalies.

Abstract:The Switched Antenna Transmit Diversity (SATD) scheme is a promising transmit diversity technique to improve the performance in High Speed Uplink Packet Access (HSUPA) systems. Antenna switching rests on a technique where only one antenna is active at a time even if the UE is equipped with multiple transmit antennas. Switching and antenna selection can be based on different methods and criteria and this paper provides simulative analysis of three different open loop antenna switching algorithms for the HSUPA systems. Furthermore, the focus will be on evaluating corresponding system level performance compared to the single Tx antenna performance when bursty traffic is assumed. The studies show that there are achievable gains and thus system performance may be enhanced by applying the antenna switching scheme, especially when the mobile velocity is low.

Abstract:Purpose:A novel medical thermo-diagnostic system was developed and used in collecting and analyzing the images from patients of coronary artery disease before and during bypass surgery. Materials and Methods:The images derived by the medical thermo-diagnostic system in 12 patients of coronary artery disease before and during process of coronary artery bypass surgery were compared with the results from electrocardiogram,coronary angiography and emission computed tomography (ECT). Results:The images of coronary arteries and myocardium were successfully obtained with the novel medical thermo-diagnostic system. The thermogram changing after blood supply and temperatures was proved to be effective in revealing ischemic area and in accordance with the results of other diagnostic methods. Conclusion:Infrared thermo-imaging could be an effective and secure method for the diagnosis and therapy of coronary artery disease.
