Abstract:A review of the Raman-active modes in single walled carbon nanotubes is presented both from experimental and theoretical standpoints. A discussion is first given of the Raman spectroscopy of isolated tubes which serve as a building block to understand the Raman spectroscopy of tubes that reside in bundles or in solution, and of nanotubes when subjected to external pressure, high temperature, applied potentials, and interstitial or endohedral doping. Using different nanotube systems, such as bundled tubes, double walled tubes, multiwalled tubes, and peapods, an attempt is made to elucidate the inffuence of van der Waals forces on the fundamental Raman scattering properties of nanotubes.Raman spectroscopy has served as a sensitive tool for characterizing new forms of carbon by providing information on structural, vibrational, and electronic properties.
