Abstract:Brick waste is the second-largest source of China's construction and demolition waste. Reprocessing brick waste into recycled brick aggregate (RBA) to fabricate new concrete [i.e., recycled brick aggregate concrete (RBAC)] has proved to be an effective solution. RBAC is generally used as nonstructural concrete owing to its inferior mechanical and durability properties compared with natural aggregate concrete (NAC). To achieve substantially enhanced properties that would qualify RBAC for potential structural use, fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) jacketing will be adopted in this study to provide confinement and corrosion resistance to the concrete core. A total of 60 standard cylinder specimens will be tested under monotonic axial compression with the replacement ratio of RBA (0%, 15%, 30%, 60%, and 100%) and the FRP jacket stiffness (0, 1, 2, and 3 plies) as variables. The test results will be analyzed and compared with existing strength and stress-strain models, and based on this it is concluded that although the compressive behavior of FRP-confined RBAC is similar to that of FRP-confined NAC, in general, a high RBA content tends to reduce the effectiveness of FRP confinement. Abstract:The use of recycled brick aggregates (RBAs) in concrete could provide sustainable solution in construction industry by reducing the consumption of natural resources and protecting the environment by saving landfill sites. However, the use of RBAs is uncommon due to limited available research studies investigating its mechanical and durability behavior, especially the freeze-thaw (FT) behavior. Despite a few studies on FT resistance of RBA concrete (RBAC), the FT deterioration mechanism in RBAC is not fully understood, particularly at the microscale. This lack of understanding hinders the widespread adoption of RBAC in sustainable construction practices, particularly in cold regions. Therefore, this study investigates the FT deterioration mechanism in RBAC using macro and microscale experiments and proposes a Weibull damage model to accurately describe the damage variation in RBAC. RBAC specimens with different water-cement (w/c) ratios of 0.65, 0.5 and 0.35 and RBA replacement levels of 0%, 25%, 50% and 100% were produced and tested under rapid FT cycles. Surface scaling, mass loss, relative dynamic modulus of elasticity, and compressive strength reduction were evaluated. X-ray computed tomography (XCT) was used to characterize pore structure and microcracking alterations during FT cycles. The results showed that the deterioration of RBAC increased with the increase in RBA replacement level. XCT revealed increased porosity and microcracking within the RBA particles, which was linked to the significant damage observed in RBAC compared to reference concrete. Quantitative analysis of pore size distribution before and after FT cycling revealed a substantial increase in small pores (<1 mm3) in RBAC. The proposed Weibull distribution damage model accurately described the damage variation in RBAC with different w/c ratios. This study provides new insights into multiscale FT deterioration mechanisms affecting RBAC, aiding in optimizing RBAC mix designs to balance sustainability and durability.

Abstract:Construction and demolition waste (CDW) contains abundant low-quality recycled brick aggregates (RBA) that can potentially substitute natural aggregates (NA) in concrete production. However, recycled brick aggregate concrete (RBAC) shows inferior mechanical and durability performance compared to natural aggregate concrete (NAC), posing barriers to RBAC widespread adoption. This study investigates the combined influence of supplementary cementitious materials (SCMs) derived from industrial byproducts and hooked-end steel fibers (HSF) on properties of concrete with 0%, 50% and 100% RBAs from CDW as replacement for natural coarse aggregates (NCA). Addition of 0.5% HSF and 20%, 10%, and 30% fly ash (FA), silica fume (SF), and ground granulated blast furnace slag (GGBS) as cement replacement, respectively, were considered. Effect of different SCMs and HSF on compressive strength, splitting tensile strength, flexural strength, ultrasonic pulse velocity (UPV), water absorption (WA), freeze-thaw (FT) and acid attack resistance of concrete were studied. Results indicated that individual incorporation of HSF showed more contribution towards mechanical performance while combined incorporation of SCMs and HSF enhanced both mechanical and durability properties, along with reduction of up to 15.6% in embodied carbon of RBAC. Microstructural examination showed pore refinement and interfacial transition zone densification in RBAC with SCMs and HSF. This study demonstrates that sustainable RBAC with excellent mechanical and durability requirements could be produced using demolished brick waste and industrial byproducts.

Abstract:Three beams subjected to long-term loading and chloride attacks, with various recycled coarse aggregate (RCA) replacement ratios of 0%, 50% and 100% respectively, were designed to investigate the effects of the RCA replacement ratio on the flexural behavior and durability properties. The results show that a higher RCA replacement ratio has a notable influence on the long-term performance of beams, leading to more chloride ion ingress, more severe steel corrosion and cracking damage, and lower flexural capacity. The maximum chloride content and steel corrosion are observed near the loading points because of the complicated stress fields induced by bending and shear in these regions. (C) 2021 Elsevier Ltd. Abstract:The high-strain rate compressive behavior of concrete made with different levels of substitution and types of coarse aggregate is addressed in the present work. The compressive behavior was investigated by performing standard quasi-static tests and Split-Hopkinson Pressure Bar tests with a large bar diameter of 155 mm. Two different types of concrete with different substituted coarse aggregates are studied, namely Recycled Aggregate Concrete (RAC) and Recycled clay Bricks Concrete (RBC). Specimens were divided into 9 groups with different levels of substitution and types of coarse aggregate ranging from 0% (Natural Aggregate Concrete, NAC) up to 100% (full substitution with recycled crushed concrete or clay bricks). Tests were executed up to a strain rate of around 100 s(-1). Data-driven predictive equations were proposed for the compressive strength Dynamic Increase Factor (DIF). Results indicate that RAC and RBC are more strain-rate sensitive than NAC. In particular, DIF markedly depends on the level of substitution in RAC, while this dependency is less marked for RBC.
Performance of Recycled Concrete Beams under Sustained Loads Coupled with Chloride Ion (cl−) Ingress

Abstract:This paper presents the experimental results of the cracking propagation and flexural performance degradation of reinforced concrete beams with recycled aggregates (RA), under long-term coupled effects of sustained loads and chloride ion (Cl-) ingress. Test results show that the load-induced cracking damages of recycled aggregate concrete (RAC) beams were slightly lower while the corrosion-induced cracking damages were larger than the natural aggregate concrete (NAC) beams, through the 20-month coupled damage history. The flexural capacity was found comparable among damaged beams with different RA replacements. Therefore, this paper suggests the mechanical properties of RAC beams should be acceptable, given that they served under sustained loads and the corrosion of the longitudinal reinforcements was relatively low (less than 3%). However, RAC beams' inferior durability against cracking by steel bar corrosion should be considered with great cautious. (C) 2016 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
Shrinkage and Durability of Waste Brick and Recycled Concrete Aggregate Stabilized by Cement and Fly Ash

Abstract:To study the shrinkage and freeze-thaw durability of cement-fly-ash-stabilized brick and concrete reclaimed gravel mixture (CFRBCA), recycled gravel was used to replace 100% of the natural gravel in cement-and-fly-ash-stabilized gravel (CFRCA). Five different mixture ratios of recycled brick and recycled concrete were designed. Dry shrinkage tests, temperature shrinkage tests, freeze-thaw cycle tests, ultrasonic tests, and microscopic analyses were then conducted. The test results showed that the water loss rate, dry shrinkage strain, and dry shrinkage coefficient of CFRBCA increased as the age and brick content increased and tended to be stable by approximately the 40th day of age. The reclaimed gravel content had a great influence on the temperature shrinkage of CFRBCA: the temperature shrinkage coefficient first increased and then decreased as the temperature decreased and reached a peak at -10 to 0 °C. The microstructure analysis showed that as the number of freeze-thaw cycles increases, cracks appear and extend in the CFRBCA, hydration products gradually change from dense to loose, and the Ca/Si ratio increases. Through these experiments, the logarithmic relationship model between ultrasonic wave velocity and CFRBCA strength damage, which can better predict the strength loss caused by CFRBCA variation with freeze-thaw cycles, was established. The brick content is the key parameter affecting the durability of the freeze-thawed CFRBCA, and thus the brick slag content should be properly controlled in engineering applications.

Abstract:Making effective use of recycled fine clay brick aggregate (RFCBA) is of benefit to reserve natural resources and protect the environment. The RFCBA has a high-water absorption capacity, which means it can be potentially used as internal curing agent for low water-to-binder concrete mix. The current study uses RFCBA to replace natural fine aggregate in self-compacting concrete (SSC) and investigates the influence of RFCBA dosage and its moisture content (saturated surface dry and oven dried) on the internal relative humidity (RH), free shrinkage and restrained shrinkage performances under drying, as well as the freezing-thawing resistance and chloride ion penetration resistance abilities. The results show that the use of the RFCBA can effectively mitigate the internal RH drop of SCC under drying. This significantly reduces the drying shrinkage and crack risk under restrained condition. The chloride ion penetrability test indicates that the use of RFCBA reduces the chloride ion penetration resistance ability of SCC. However, the chloride ion penetrability of SCC having a RFCBA substitution ratio up to 100% remains very low after 56-day curing. Furthermore, on the one hand, the free-thawing resistance of SCC is reduced when saturated RFCBA is used. On the other hand, the use of dried RFCBA can increase the free-thawing resistance of SCC. Nevertheless, the SCC possesses a F200 frost resistance with a replacement level of 100% saturated RFCBA.

Abstract:Wasted clay bricks as coarse aggregate of recycled concrete is an effective solution to save energy and reduce CO 2 emissions in the construction industry. However, the mechanical properties and frost resistance of recycled brick aggregate (RBA) concrete are inferior to those of ordinary concrete, which limits its widespread application. In this research, the effects of RBA, polypropylene fiber (PPF) and nano-silica (NS) on the mechanical properties and frost resistance of concrete were investigated. The effect of RBA, PPF, and NS on the compressive strength was quantitatively analyzed, and microstructural analysis and fractal dimension calculation of the concrete were performed. The results show that the concrete compressive strength decreased with the increase in RBA replacement rate, and it was effectively improved by adding PPF and NS (PPF-NS). The compressive strength first increased and then decreased with the increase in PPF and NS. The improvement effect of 0.12% PPF and 2% NS on the compressive strength of 50% replacement rate of RBA concrete was most effective. The gray relational degrees between the compressive strength and RBA, PPF, and NS were 0.6578, 0.8297, and 0.5941, respectively. The frost resistance of PPF-NS modified concrete was better than that of ordinary concrete, mainly manifested in its superior apparent phenomena, mass loss, and strength loss. Compared with normal concrete, the microstructure was denser and the fractal dimension of the cross-section was higher for RBA concrete modified with PPF-NS before and after freeze–thaw cycles.

Synergetic Effect of Fly Ash and Ground-Granulated Blast Slag on Improving the Chloride Permeability and Freeze–thaw Resistance of Recycled Aggregate Concrete

Abstract:In this study, the synergetic effects of fly ash (FA) and ground-granulated blast slag (GGBS) on the compressive behavior and durability of recycled aggregate concrete (RAC) were comprehensively investigated. FA and GGBS were incorporated separately or simultaneously into the RAC containing 0%, 35%, and 50% recycled coarse aggregate (RCA) to replace partial cement. Moreover, the frost resistance and chloride penetration resistance of RAC, respectively, were experimentally determined by the rapid freeze???thaw cycle test and rapid chloride permeability test (RCPT). Results showed that an optimum replacement ratio could exist for improving the properties of RAC by partially replacing cement with FA and GGBS. The optimum ratio of the simultaneous incorporation of FA and GGBS to replace partly cement for improving the 90-day-compressive strength and the chloride penetration resistance of RAC were 10% and 20%, respectively, but for enhancing the frost resistance of RAC were 15% and 15%. In addition, the synergetic effects of simultaneously incorporating FA and GGBS were more effective than the effects of separately incorporating FA or GGBS on enhancing the performance of RAC. When adopting the simultaneous incorporation of 15% FA and 15% GGBS, the 90-day-compressive strength, chloride penetration resistance, and frost resistance of RAC incorporating 50% RCA were better than those of ordinary concrete.

Abstract:The influence of different recycled brick coarse aggregate (RBA) substitution rates on the mechanical performance and frost resistance of concrete was observed. The test findings revealed that RBA deteriorated the compressive and flexural properties in concrete and improved the tensile properties and plasticity in concrete to some extent. The frost resistance of concrete can be effectively improved by adding RBA. The influence degree of the RBA concrete frost resistance factor was quantified by gray entropy correlation theory, and the gray entropy correlations between freezing and thawing cycles, natural coarse aggregate substitution rate, recycled brick aggregate substitution rate, and freezing and thawing damage value (DN) were 0.9979, 0.9914, and 0.9876, respectively. Moreover, the freezing and thawing damage model about GM(1, 1) theory was developed (R2 > 0.87), which can better predict the freezing and thawing damage of RBA concrete. The damage mechanism of RBA concrete during freezing and thawing was revealed.

Generally, the microscopic testing results show that the addition of RCAs forms some weaker multiple interfaces with loose structures within concrete. However, the RAC with 40% FNS content as fine aggregate exhibits the better F-T resistance. It illustrates that incorporating an appropriate amount of FNS can produce more C-S-H gels to strengthen the microstructures of ITZs within concrete, partially offsetting the adverse effects caused by the poor physical properties of RCA.

Abstract:Chloride ion penetration resistance (CPR) of concrete containing fly ash (FA)/silica fume (SF) against combined freezing-thawing and chloride attack was studied. The total charge passed, immersed in tap water and sodium chloride solution, subjected to 50 freezing-thawing cycles was evaluated. It was found that immersed in tap water, SF had more evident improvement on concrete’s resistance to combined effects than FA. Sodium chloride solution immersion for 41d prior to test was more aggressive than tap water. After 50 freezing-thawing cycles, CPR of concrete with FA increased, while that with SF decreased. Interaction between freezing-thawing and chloride attack accelerated concrete deterioration.

Abstract:Abstract Due to recycled aggregate concrete technology, sustainable resource utilization can be achieved, but the weak frost resistance of this type of concrete affects its application in cold regions. Using waste polypropylene fibers as reinforcing materials can improve the mechanical properties and durability of concrete. This study explores the influence of waste polypropylene fiber on the frost resistance durability and microstructure of recycled brick aggregate (RA) concrete. The results show that with the increase in freeze–thaw cycles, the mass of the concrete first increases and then decreases, while its relative dynamic elastic modulus and compressive strength gradually decrease. After 60 freeze–thaw cycles, the maximum mass loss, maximum relative dynamic elastic modulus loss, and maximum compressive strength loss of the RA concrete are 1.73, 45.1, and 73.7%, respectively. Waste fiber (WF) can improve the frost resistance of concrete, as demonstrated by the obvious reduction in mass loss, relative dynamic elasticity modulus loss, and compressive strength loss, which are 0.11, 33.0, and 64.0%, respectively, after 60 freeze–thaw cycles. The action mechanism of WF on the frost resistance of RA concrete is revealed, and the life prediction model of RA concrete with WF under freeze–thaw conditions is established.

Abstract:The application of brick–concrete recycled aggregates can alleviate the problem of increasing construction waste and increasing scarcity of natural aggregates. The different moisture condition of coarse aggregates can significantly affect the performance of brick–concrete recycled aggregate concrete. In this paper, the additional water quantity of dry and air-dried brick–concrete recycled coarse aggregate concrete was determined. Additionally, the fluidity, rheological parameters, autogenous shrinkage, strength and chloride ion penetration resistance were tested, and compared with saturated surface dry recycled brick–concrete coarse aggregate concrete and natural aggregate concrete. The results showed that the slump of concrete was increased, whereas the plastic viscosity, static and dynamic yield stress were decreased by adding additional water or using saturated surface dry coarse aggregate. Compared with the dry and saturated surface dry state, the air-dried recycled coarse aggregate concrete has the smallest 28 days autogenous shrinkage value, higher compressive strength and splitting tensile strength, and less adverse effects on chloride permeability. It is most beneficial to the performance and economy of concrete to adopt the air-dried state when the brick–concrete recycled coarse aggregate is applied in engineering.

Abstract:Recycled fine aggregate (RFA) produced from concrete waste is commonly used in the construction industry; however, its use for structural concrete members has not been extensively studied. Moreover, its durability in a drying–wetting cycle environment still needs to be examined. In this study, the intrusion process of chloride in concrete under the drying–wetting cycles is experimentally characterized. Chloride penetration tests are carried out on concrete with the incorporation of different RFA replacement rates and mineral admixtures (i.e., fly ash and silica fume). The results show that the chloride penetration of recycled fine aggregate concrete (RFAC) is dependent upon the performance of the concrete itself, while the deterioration of chloride ion erosion resistance is due to the combined action of the replacement rate of RFA and the drying–wetting cycles. The incorporation of RFA degrades the properties of RFAC owing to its drawbacks in the degradation of interfacial properties of RFAC. Exposure to the drying–wetting cycle environment causes the content of free chloride ions in RFAC to increase initially before decreasing with the erosion depth, thereby showing an obvious convection zone and diffusion zone. The incorporation of the mineral admixture can effectively improve the compactness of the concrete microstructure and make concrete less susceptible to chloride ions ingress. RFAC mixed with 15% fly ash and 10% silica fume has a comparable resistance to chloride penetration as a natural aggregate concrete, which is a feasible method for the application of RFA.

Abstract:Experimental and theoretical investigations were carried out to evaluate the effects of incorporating basalt fiber (BF) on the mechanical properties and microstructure of recycled brick-concrete aggregate concrete (RBAC). The effect of BF content (0, 1, 2, 3, and 4 kg/m³) and recycled brick aggregate (RBA) replacement ratio (0, 20, 40, 60, 80, and 100 %) on the mechanical properties of RBAC were investigated. And the failure mode, compressive strength, elastic modulus, the complete stress-strain curve, and compressive damage constitutive relation were studied. The results show that the failure mode of RBAC can be enhanced by adding BF. And the addition of BF leads to an increase in concrete compressive strength at a given RBA replacement ratio. In addition, a reduction was observed in the elastic modulus and compressive strength with an increase in the RBA replacement ratio. However, the highest compressive strength was found in the concrete with 40 % RBA replacement and a BF content of 2 kg/m3. Furthermore, an indirect model for the damage constitutive is developed to evaluate the compressive strength of BF-reinforced RBAC, which was based on the Lemaitre strain equivalence by combining the influence of BF content and RBA replacement ratio on the stress, strain, and damage coefficient of concrete. Through the observation of recycled aggregate and BF in RBAC by TM3000 electron microscope, the microscopic characteristics of recycled aggregate and the distribution characteristics and mechanism of BF in concrete are found. Therefore, the BF-reinforced RBAC can be used in construction to reduce the environmental hazards from collapsed buildings during urban renewal or earthquakes with brick and concrete waste.

Abstract:Concrete wastes such as recycled concrete aggregates (RCA) make up a significant part of construction and demolition waste (C&DW) which can be used to minimize usage of natural aggregates and reduce carbon footprint. This paper studies the salt-scaling resistance of recycled aggregate concrete produced with pretreated RCAs. The test method for evaluating salt-scaling resistance in concrete according to DIN EN 1340: 2003 was performed. Four series of concrete mixes using natural aggregates, RCAs, manually pretreated RCA, and modified RCA in a desiccator were subjected to the different tests in terms of bulk electrical resistance in two directions (X and Y) before and after freeze-thaw cycles, ultrasonic pulse velocity, and weight loss of the surface layer of concrete specimens. Moreover, Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) of mixes was conducted and the microstructure of mixes considering the interface transition zone was studied. Results show that after exposure to cycles of freezing and thawing, the quality of concrete regarding ultrasonic pulse velocity did not change. The electrical resistance of specimens decreased significantly in X-direction and slightly in Y-direction after applying freeze-thaw cycles in all mixes. Nevertheless, surface modification of RCAs can increase electrical resistance and improve durability of concrete. SEM images show that the interface transition zone before and after freeze-thaw cycles remained unchanged which means strong bond between aggregate, new mortar, and old mortar. An estimation of the total charge passed indicated that all recycled aggregate concretes can be classified in a safe area and with very low chloride ion penetrability according to ASTM C1202.

Abstract:The global construction industry is increasingly utilizing concrete prepared from recycled aggregate as a substitute for natural aggregate. However, the subpar performance of recycled fine aggregate (RFA) has resulted in its underutilization, particularly in the structural concrete exposed to challenging environments, including those involving chlorine salts and freeze–thaw climates. This study aimed to enhance the performance of RFA as a substitute for river sand in concrete as well as fulfill the present demand for fine aggregates in the construction sector by utilizing accelerated carbonation treatment to create fully recycled aggregate concrete (FRAC) composed of 100% recycled coarse and fine aggregates. The impacts of incorporating carbonated recycled fine aggregate (C-RFA) at various replacement rates (0%, 25%, 50%, 75%, and 100%) on the mechanical and durability properties of FRAC were investigated. The results showed that the physical properties of C-RFA, including apparent density, water absorption, and crushing value, were enhanced compared to that of RFA. The compressive strength of C-RFC100 was 19.8% higher than that of C-RFC0, while the water absorption decreased by 14.6%. In a comparison of C-RFC0 and C-RFC100, the chloride permeability coefficients showed a 50% decrease, and the frost resistance increased by 27.6%. According to the findings, the mechanical and durability properties, the interfacial transition zones (ITZs), and micro-cracks of the C-RFC were considerably enhanced with an increased C-RFA content.
