Abstract:For a reliable and controllable wireless power transfer (WPT) system, the simultaneous wireless power and information transfer (SWPIT) technology has recently attracted special consideration to achieve real-time information exchange between the transmitter and receiver. In this article, a novel SWPIT system with an integrated signal magnetic coupler is proposed for wireless charging applications. The signal detection coil integrated with the receiver coil is designed to utilize the existing ferrite cores of the magnetic coupler, reducing the overall cost, and obtaining a more compact design. Meanwhile, the deviation frequency enlargement effect principle and the frequency shift keying technology are used to realize SWPIT in a wireless charger. The equivalent circuit of the proposed system is modeled and analyzed considering the cross-couplings between the integrated signal coil and the main coils. The finite element analysis (FEA) is presented through Ansys Maxwell software to select the optimal ferrite core structure and eliminate these unwanted cross-couplings. Finally, a 70-$W$ power experimental prototype is established, and comprehensive experimental results are given to verify the feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed SWPIT system. Furthermore, the experimental results demonstrate that the measured output power fluctuation is below 0.5% during information transmission, the transmission rate is up to 9.6 kbps, and the system efficiency can be maintained at 88.76%.
Omnidirectional Wireless Power Transfer for Millimetric Magnetoelectric Biomedical Implants

Abstract:Miniature bioelectronic implants promise revolutionary therapies for cardiovascular and neurological disorders. Wireless power transfer (WPT) is a significant method for miniaturization, eliminating the need for bulky batteries in today's devices. Despite successful demonstrations of millimetric battery-free implants in animal models, the robustness and efficiency of WPT are known to degrade significantly under misalignment incurred by body movements, respiration, heart beating, and limited control of implant orientation during surgery. This article presents an omnidirectional WPT platform for millimetric bioelectronic implants, employing the emerging magnetoelectric (ME) WPT modality, and "magnetic field steering" technique based on multiple transmitter (TX) coils. To accurately sense the weak coupling in a miniature implant and adaptively control the multicoil TX array in a closed loop, we develop an active echo (AE) scheme using a tiny coil on the implant. Our prototype comprises a fully integrated 14.2 mm3 implantable stimulator embedding a custom low-power system-on-chip (SoC) powered by an ME film, a TX with a custom three-channel AE RX chip, and a multicoil TX array with mutual inductance cancellation. The AE RX achieves −161 dBm/Hz input-referred noise with 64 dB gain tuning range to reliably sense the AE signal, and offers fast polarity detection for driver control. AE simultaneously enhances the robustness, efficiency, and charging range of ME WPT. Under 90° rotation from the ideal position, our omnidirectional WPT system achieves higher power transfer efficiency (PTE) than a single-coil baseline. The tracking error of AE negligibly degrades the PTE by less than 2% from using ideal control.

Abstract:The subcutaneous implant, which can realize on-demand drug release, is used for the treatments of some chronic diseases such as chronic pain, diabetes, and osteoporosis. This paper proposes a new type of wireless actuator for potential use in active implantable drug delivery systems. The proposed structure suits both wireless power well, which requires far-field flux traveling and receiving, and actuator design, which should take advantage of strong local magnetic fields. The mover in the actuator generates mechanical movement when power is transferred wirelessly to the actuator, and the mover restores to its original position when the wireless power stops. The maximum oscillation amplitude of the mover can be achieved when the ON and OFF frequency of the wireless power transfer is equal to the mechanical resonant frequency of the mover. Experimental results on a prototype actuator with 20 mm in diameter and 10.3 mm in thickness are given for validating the proposed new idea.

Abstract:Implantable Medical Devices (IMDs) have been developing in ways to be lighter and lower-power systems. In the view of such developments, the battery recharging capacity to ensure the stable operation of the system is essential. Wireless power transfer (WPT) was proposed as a solution to recharge the battery without complex metallic contacts. However, due to limitations such as threshold voltage of power switches and minimal input power of the multi-stage structure (Rectifier + Regulator/DC-DC converter) of conventional voltage-mode (VM) WPT, there are drawbacks of an input power range above a certain threshold level and limitations due to strict regulations on the human body. These issues make the design of the IMD battery charger much harder and prevent IMDs from being a more viable option for people-in-need. This paper introduces distinguishing characteristics of resonant current-mode (RCM) WPT technology to overcome the aforementioned issues. It also describes the basic theory, conventional circuits of VM/RCM, comparisons, and major challenges of RCM. Finally, advanced and efficiency-enhancing techniques of the-state-of-art works among the RCM topologies will be discussed to follow up the trend of RCM WPT.

Abstract:This paper presents an efficient coil design for a mm-sized micro-robot which generates a propulsion force and torque and receives electrical energy using a wireless power transfer system. To determine the most efficient coil structures and produce propulsion and torque on the micro-robot, both helical and spiral coil modeling was conducted, and analytical formulations of the propulsion force and torque were derived for helical and spiral coil structures. Additionally, the dominant dimensional factors for determining propulsion and coil torque were analyzed in detail. Based on the results, an optimum coil structure for generating maximum force on the micro-robot was developed and is herein presented with dimensional analysis. Simulations and experiments were also conducted to verify the design, and good agreement was achieved. A 3-mm micro-robot that simultaneously generated a propulsion force and torque and received electrical energy via wireless power transfer was successfully fabricated using the proposed method and verified.

Abstract:Wireless power transfer (WPT) systems have become increasingly suitable solutions for the electrical powering of advanced multifunctional micro-electronic devices such as those found in current biomedical implants. The design and implementation of high power transfer efficiency WPT systems are, however, challenging. The size of the WPT system, the separation distance between the outside environment and location of the implanted medical device inside the body, the operating frequency and tissue safety due to power dissipation are key parameters to consider in the design of WPT systems. This article provides a systematic review of the wide range of WPT systems that have been investigated over the last two decades to improve overall system performance. The various strategies implemented to transfer wireless power in implantable medical devices (IMDs) were reviewed, which includes capacitive coupling, inductive coupling, magnetic resonance coupling and, more recently, acoustic and optical powering methods. The strengths and limitations of all these techniques are benchmarked against each other and particular emphasis is placed on comparing the implanted receiver size, the WPT distance, power transfer efficiency and tissue safety presented by the resulting systems. Necessary improvements and trends of each WPT techniques are also indicated per specific IMD.

Abstract:To reduce the implant volume of cardiac pacemaker WPT systems and enhance transmission efficiency, this paper presents the design of an internally integrated dual‐coupled WPT system. This design incorporates a compensation coil within the main coil and utilizes the coupling between these compensation coils as a secondary energy transmission channel. Summary In order to reduce the implantation volume and improve the transmission efficiency of the magnetically coupled resonant wireless power transfer system for cardiac pacemakers, a dual‐coupled wireless power transfer system for cardiac pacemakers that integrates a compensation coil into the main coil was designed. First, the mutual inductance equivalent model of the dual‐coupled wireless power transfer system was established and the impedance matching parameters were solved. The double‐sided inductor–capacitor–inductor (DS‐LCL) circuit simulation model considering the equivalent series resistance was established with MATLAB. The influence of different inductance ratios on the output power and transfer efficiency of the system was analyzed in the range of 200–300 kHz, and the system parameters for optimal transfer efficiency were determined. Second, the compensation coil on the same side was naturally decoupled by changing the aspect ratio of the compensation coil. The magnetic field distribution between the internally integrated dual‐coupled structure proposed in this paper and the conventional integrated structure was compared using COMSOL, and the safety assessment of the system was conducted, considering parameters such as temperature rise and specific absorption rate. Finally, an experimental platform was established to verify the system's output performance and safety. The results showed that compared with conventional integrated structures, the proposed integrated structure increased the output power by 0.229 W and transmission efficiency by 10.08% at a transmission distance of 8 mm. The maximum temperature rise is 1.9°C.

Abstract:This article proposes and implements an optimized omnidirectional wireless power transfer (WPT) system using distributed transmitter coils. Under the consideration of practical WPT applications which involve human safety concerns, such as daily home apparatus or wireless rechargeable medical implants, the proposed system can achieve the shortest charging time within the safe limits of human exposure to radiofrequency electromagnetic energy. Based on the calculation of the magnetic intensity generated by multicoupling WPT systems, a more processable magnetic threshold model is presented and analyzed based on the common standard. A newly developed optimization model of the transmitter currents and accordant control strategy is designed and presented to realize both maximum power tracking and flux suppression at target positions. The double-resonant circuit topology with LCC compensation is adopted to reach the stable and synchronized transmitter currents. The cross-coupling problem in multiinput WPT systems will be solved as well. Full-range magnitude control is realized with a single controller and direct current (dc) power supply. The hybrid frequency pacing technique is adopted for lower switching frequency and higher system efficiency under weak coupling operations. Taking practical wireless rechargeable medical implant as the research object, both simulation and experimental results validate the feasibility and the prospect of the proposed system.

Design of High Efficiency Planar Spiral Coil for Implantable Wireless Power Transfer Systems

Abstract:This paper proposes a five-coil array united structure for implantable wireless power transfer system. The coil structure comprises a radiating coil and a driving coil. The driving coil drives radiating coil to radiate power. Both coils resonate at 13.56 MHz. It can generate almost uniform magnetic distribution which would improve the dislocation tolerance of the wireless power transfer system. At 13.56 MHz, the S parameter is used to calculate the system efficiency. The five-coil array united structure is fabricated on planar printed circuit board. The structure is compact and suitable for implants. According to the experimental results, the system efficiency can reach as high as 54.7% when coils align (transfer distance from 10 mm to 20 mm) and keep almost unchanged with a dislocation from 5 mm to 10 mm (transfer distance is 10 mm). And almost all efficiency values are above 50%. Efficient and stable power transmission is realized.

Abstract:Wireless power transmission (WPT) is a critical technology that provides a secure alternative mechanism for wireless power and communication with implantable medical devices. WPT approaches for implantable medical devices have been utilized based on applications. For instance, the inductive coupling tactic is mostly employed for transmission of energy to neuro-stimulators, and the ultrasonic method is used for deep-seated implants. This article provides a study concentrating on popular WPT techniques for implantable medical devices (IMDs) including inductive coupling, microwave, ultrasound, and hybrid WPT systems consisting of two approaches combined. Moreover, an overview of the major works is analyzed with a comparison of their major design elements, operating frequency, distance, efficiency, and harvested power.

Abstract:Transcutaneous energy transmission technology based on coil coupling is widely required for various wireless powering implanted devices in human body. However, the coupling performance is commonly affected by malposition between coils in practice. It is difficult for users to know the actual position of the implanted receiver coil (RC) and how to realign the transmitter coil (TC) outside the body. This article proposes a detecting method of coil-coupling malposition based on a sensing board with coil array fitted on the TC. In this article, the sensing system and the data processing algorithm separating the sensing coil (SC) signals induced by TC and RC currents, respectively, are introduced. Then, an analytical model formulating the induction effect between the RC and SCs is given. Inverse computation algorithms of the malposition based on the processed sensing data and the induction effect model are presented at last. The proposed method is validated by experiments simulating malposition both in distance and concentricity on an actual coil couple. The results show that the sensing system can provide accurate parameterized guide for users to adjust the installation of the TC for good energy transmission performance.
Wireless Power Transfer Approaches for Medical Implants: A Review

Abstract:Wireless power transmission (WPT) is a critical technology that provides an alternative for wireless power and communication with implantable medical devices (IMDs). This article provides a study concentrating on popular WPT techniques for IMDs including inductive coupling, microwave, ultrasound, and hybrid wireless power transmission (HWPT) systems. Moreover, an overview of the major works is analyzed with a comparison of the symmetric and asymmetric design elements, operating frequency, distance, efficiency, and harvested power. In general, with respect to the operating frequency, it is concluded that the ultrasound-based and inductive-based WPTs have a low operating frequency of less than 50 MHz, whereas the microwave-based WPT works at a higher frequency. Moreover, it can be seen that most of the implanted receiver’s dimension is less than 30 mm for all the WPT-based methods. Furthermore, the HWPT system has a larger receiver size compared to the other methods used. In terms of efficiency, the maximum power transfer efficiency is conducted via inductive-based WPT at 95%, compared to the achievable frequencies of 78%, 50%, and 17% for microwave-based, ultrasound-based, and hybrid WPT, respectively. In general, the inductive coupling tactic is mostly employed for transmission of energy to neuro-stimulators, and the ultrasonic method is used for deep-seated implants.
An Inductive Power Transfer System With Adjustable Compensation Network For Implantable Medical Devices

Abstract:A reliable wireless power transfer (WPT) system with constant voltage output is necessary for power charging of implantable medical devices (IMDs). This paper proposes a single-loop WPT system with an adjustable compensation network in which the capacitor array can be altered. It can provide constant voltage supply without regulating circuit in the receiver, which benefits for IMDs. A prototype is built up and the measurement results validate the effectiveness of the proposed method. Typically, this system works properly at various values of load resistance and coupling coefficient. The measurement results show that when the coils' distance ranges from 32 mm to 40 mm and the load resistance varies from 100 Ω to 500 Ω, the capacitor array can be adjusted automatically to offer the load almost constant voltage at 3.4 V.

Abstract:During the periodic drug administration for chronic diseases, unexpected battery depletion can be significantly problematic for the patients. While body heat harvesting utilizing the wearable thermoelectric generator (WTEG) shows the significant potential in continuous drug delivery systems (DDSs) by providing ceaseless power source, the power and the voltage output might not be sufficient to drive micropump actuators in such drug delivery systems. The continuous actuating current also imposes an additional challenge in developing efficient and compact voltage boosting circuits. In this paper, we propose an ultra-low-energy operating method of the WTEG-powered electromagnetic micropump system. In combination with our electromagnetic bi-stable actuator (EBA) where the energy demand is discretized, we present (1) the dedicated high-efficient charge pumps (CPs) (2) and the actuating pulse control method to prevent redundant energy waste. The proposed 10-stage charge pump is designed to reduce the conversion loss by utilizing multiple flying-capacitor switching structure, and the 2-stage series–parallel charge pump (SPCP) is fabricated with flexible thin-film super-capacitors (TFSCs) to realize the high boosting performance within compact and wearable features. Applying the proposed control method with the 10-stage CP in our WTEG-powered micropump system, we significantly reduce the charging time per actuation by 88.8% compared to the commercial boosting circuit. Also, the 2-stage SPCP achieves 84.0% reduction in the charging time while utilizing flexible and wearable features, showing a significant potential for self-powered wearable healthcare applications.

Abstract:<p class="a-plus-plus">The existing wireless power transfer (WPT) systems for gastrointestinal capsule robot have the problems of small coupling coefficient and low power transmission efficiency (PTE). The reasons are due to the long distance between the transmitting coil and the receiving coil and the large difference in size. A new type of WPT system is designed, which uses three sets of small coil pairs to form a power supply unit (PSU), and utilizes multiple PSUs to form a multi-coil WPT system. Compared with single-coil system, the multi-coil system can achieve higher power utilization by switching between PSUs, instead of opening all PSUs. ANSYS Maxwell is used to perform finite element modeling on the PSU, analyzing the characteristics of the transmitting magnetic field. The results of the experiment show that when the distance between the small coil pairs in the PSU is 180 mm, the magnetic field has relatively good uniformity, and the magnetic strength change relative to the center point is less than 5%. The average received power of the system is greater than 800mW, and the PTE is up to 5.1%.</p>

Abstract:As the development of implantable biomedical devices, the rechargeable battery is applied to improve the life of implantable devices. Inductive transcutaneous power transfer, as a suitable way of charging the implantable rechargeable batteries, is widely used. During charging period, there are several stages based on the charging rule and the load resistance is varying simultaneously. In this paper, a model of inductive transcutaneous power transfer is set up with a compensative capacitor for primary coil in series and another compensative capacitor for secondary coil in parallel to descript the relationship in coupling coefficient, load resistance and conversion efficiency. Simulations were done and experiments were carried out to verify the model, and some suggestions on wireless power transfer design are given.
An Efficiency-Enhanced Wireless Power Transfer System with Segmented Transmitting Coils for Endoscopic Capsule

Abstract:This paper proposes a new wireless power transfer (WPT) system for the endoscopic capsule. In the system, a group of vertically segmented primary coils around the human body are adopted as the transmitting coils. According to the position of the endoscopic capsule, one of the transmitting coils is intelligently selected to transfer the power with the highest efficiency. This paper also presents a coil selection and control algorithm for the unique WPT system. Compared with the conventional design, the calculated transmission efficiencies of the new solution at the best and worst points of the body are enhanced by 53.5% and 138% respectively. And the average efficiency of the proposed solution is about 3.8%.
Simultaneous Wireless Power Transfer and Data Communication Using Synchronous Pulse-Controlled Load Modulation

Abstract:Wireless Power Transfer (WPT) and wireless data communication are both important problems of research with various applications, especially in medicine. However, these two problems are usually studied separately. In this work, we present a joint study of both problems. Most medical electronic devices, such as smart implants, must have both a power supply to allow continuous operation and a communication link to pass information. Traditionally, separate wireless channels for power transfer and communication are utilized, which complicate the system structure, increase power consumption and make device miniaturization difficult. A more effective approach is to use a single wireless link with both functions of delivering power and passing information. We present a design of such a wireless link in which power and data travel in opposite directions. In order to aggressively miniaturize the implant and reduce power consumption, we eliminate the traditional multi-bit Analog-to-Digital Converter (ADC), digital memory and data transmission circuits all together. Instead, we use a pulse stream, which is obtained from the original biological signal, by a sigma-delta converter and an edge detector, to alter the load properties of the WPT channel. The resulting WPT signal is synchronized with the load changes therefore requiring no memory elements to record inter-pulse intervals. We take advantage of the high sensitivity of the resonant WPT to the load change, and the system dynamic response is used to transfer each pulse. The transient time of the WPT system is analyzed using the coupling mode theory (CMT). Our experimental results show that the memoryless approach works well for both power delivery and data transmission, providing a new wireless platform for the design of future miniaturized medical implants.

Abstract:Wireless Power Transfer (WPT) has been drawing a lot of attention in the last ten years in parallel with the market increase in electric vehicles. Although conductive charging methods are still the preferred ones, WPT-based charging systems are used as clean and flexible alternatives. At the center of these systems are the transmitting and receiving coils, and different coil types have been proposed in the literature. This study proposes a square-hexagonal hybrid coil structure to increase magnetic coupling by shaping the magnetic field. In addition, this design aims to minimize the coupling coefficient variation for misaligned coils which is one of the most significant problems in WPT systems. A 3D model of the coils was created and analyzed using ANSYS, Maxwell software. Compared to the conventional square coil structure the coupling coefficient of the proposed structure is less affected by misalignment on the x and y axes, and as a result, it has a better efficiency. In addition, a WPT system operating at 5- W, 85-kHz is designed and tested in a laboratory environment. The FEA analyses and experimental application results largely overlap, and accordingly, the coil-to-coil efficiency of our WPT system was 93.5% and the overall efficiency of the system was 87%.

Abstract:Progress in implanted bioelectronic technology offers the opportunity to develop more effective tools for personalized electronic medicine. While there are numerous clinical and pre-clinical applications for these devices, power delivery to these systems can be challenging. Wireless battery-free devices offer advantages such as a smaller and lighter device footprint and reduced failures and infections by eliminating lead wires. However, with the development of wireless technologies, there are fundamental tradeoffs between five essential factors: power, miniaturization, depth, alignment tolerance, and transmitter distance, while still allowing devices to work within safety limits. These tradeoffs mean that multiple forms of wireless power transfer are necessary for different devices to best meet the needs for a given biological target. Here six different types of wireless power transfer technologies used in bioelectronic implants—inductive coupling, radio frequency, mid-field, ultrasound, magnetoelectrics, and light—are reviewed in context of the five tradeoffs listed above. This core group of wireless power modalities is then used to suggest possible future bioelectronic technologies and their biological applications.
