Abstract:An integrated all-fiber sensor based on ring-core fiber (RCF)-embedded long-period fiber grating (LPFG) cascaded RCF-Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI) for measuring curvature and temperature is proposed and demonstrated experimentally. The RCF-embedded LPFG section is fabricated by periodically embedding hundreds of micrometers sized RCF into SMF by employing the mature, low-cost cleaving splicing method (CSM). Due to the large core diameter mismatch, the energy within the core is exceeded into the cladding mode more effectively, and the periodic refractive index modulation gives our sensor has a compact size with only three-period SMF-RCF structures and a total length of 2.8 mm. To measure curvature and temperature simultaneously, an RCF-based MZI with an RCF length of 1 mm is cascaded behind LPFG by employing the CSM. Thus, there are two dips corresponding to LPFG and MZI occur in the transmission spectrum. The dips show different responses to curvature and temperature changes. The maximum curvature and temperature sensitivities of the two dips are 26.61, -1.67 nm/m(-1), 0.053 nm/.C, and 0.059 nm/degrees C, respectively. By utilizing a 2 x 2 matrix, simultaneous measurement of curvature and temperature can be achieved. The integrated all-fiber sensor has a compact size, low cost, and high sensitivity possessing more competitivity in complex, harsh applications.

Abstract:In this paper, a novel inline optical fiber sensor for curvature and temperature measurement simultaneously has been proposed and demonstrated, which can measure two parameters with very little crosstalk. Two combinational mechanisms of anti-resonant reflecting optical waveguide and inline Mach–Zehnder interference structure are integrated into a 3 mm-long single hole twin suspended core fiber (SHTSCF). The 85 μm hole core gives periodic several dominant resonant wavelengths in the optical transmission spectrum, acting as the anti-resonant reflecting optical waveguide (ARROW). The modes in two suspended cores and the cladding form the comb pattern. Reliable sensor sensitivity can be obtained by effective experiments and demodulation. Through intensity demodulation of the selected dip of Gaussian fitting, the curvature sensitivity can be up to −7.23 dB/m−1. Through tracking the MZI dip for wavelength demodulation, the temperature sensitivity can be up to 28.8 pm/°C. The sensor is simple in structure, compact, and has good response, which can have a bright application in a complex environment.

Abstract:We proposed and demonstrated a compact inline optical fiber sensor for curvature and temperature measurement with low cross sensitivity. The device consists of a 5 mm long hollow-core fiber (HCF) spliced between two single-mode fibers. Two up-tapers were fabricated at each splicing joint forming a Mach-Zehnder Interferometer (MZI). The HCF acted as the anti-resonant reflecting optical waveguide (ARROW), giving periodic dips at resonant wavelengths in the optical transmission spectrum. The cross sensitivity of curvature and temperature problem is solved by demodulating the wavelength shift of the MZI for temperature sensing and intensity variation of ARROW dips for curvature sensing. The curvature and temperature sensitivities are experimentally measured to be −4.28 dB/m<sup>−1</sup> and 25.76 pm/°C, respectively. The cross sensitivities for ARROW is measured to be 0.0056 m<sup>−1</sup>/°C. The structure of the sensor is simple and compact, which can be used for structural health monitoring in a complex environment.

Abstract:A low-cost optical fibre sensor based on two cascaded balloon-like bent fibre (BBF) structures for simultaneous displacement and temperature measurement is reported. The sensor is fabricated by cascading two balloon-like bent single-mode fibres (SMFs) which with different bending radii, generating two separate interference dips within a limited wavelength range. The wavelength of the two interference dips exhibits different responses to external displacement and temperature variations, hence simultaneous measurement of displacement and temperature is realized. Experimental results show that the proposed optical fibre sensor achieves a displacement sensitivity of -318.8 pm/mu m and a temperature sensitivity of 47.4 pm/degrees C. Taking advantage of its low-cost, ease of fabrication, and experimentally determined high sensitivity, the sensor in this investigation can be potentially applied in both displacement and temperature measurement fields.

Abstract:In this paper, we present a highly sensitive inline fiber curvature sensor based on an eccentric core fiber (ECF) and off-axis air cavity Fabry-Pérot interferometer (OACFPI). This ECF-based bending sensor is fabricated by fusion-splicing a section of ECF between a single-mode fiber and an off-axis air cavity fiber. Due to the location of the core in the ECF, a bend applied to the ECF-based OACFPI leads to elongation or shortening of the optical path length in the air cavity, which makes the system suitable for bending measurement. To analyze bending characteristics, three ECFs with different eccentric core locations are investigated separately. In addition, a swept source is employed for measurement. The experimental results demonstrate that, the bending sensitivities of the sensors at the two opposite most-sensitive directions are 0.241 nm/ $\text{m}^{\mathbf {-1}}$ (sensor 1), 0.131 nm/ $\text{m}^{\mathbf {-1}}$ (sensor 2), and 0.0807 nm/ $\text{m}^{\mathrm {\mathbf {-1 }}}$ (sensor 3), and −0.245 nm/ $\text{m}^{\mathbf {-1}}$ (sensor 1), −0.156 nm/ $\text{m}^{\mathbf {-1}}$ (sensor 2), and −0.077 nm/ $\text{m}^{\mathbf {-1}}$ (sensor 3). The temperature sensitivities of the sensors are 0.84 pm/°C, 0.92 pm/°C, and 0.94 pm/°C, respectively. The proposed sensors are compact and versatile, and are expected to have potential applications in biomedical sensing.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose a curvature and temperature sensor based on two symmetrical grooves and a hollow core fiber (HCF) filled with polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS). The two grooves are produced by splicing both ends of the polished HCF with two multimode fibers (MMFs). The proposed groove structure is sensitive to curvature, and the PDMS, with a high thermo-optical coefficient, makes the sensor highly sensitive to temperature. The experimental results show that the sensor exhibits a high sensitivity of −6.833 nm/m−1 in the curvature range of 0 m−1 to 45.97m−1, and a high sensitivity of 4.278 nm/°C in the temperature range of 25°C to 95°C. The proposed sensor can monitor curvature and temperature simultaneously in real-time, and has potential application prospects in industrial production, biomedicine, structural health monitoring, and other fields.

Abstract:This article presents a long-period fiber-grating sensor based on a congruent quasi-helical structure (CQH-LPFG) with the two-parameter measurement of both temperature and curvature. The CQH-LPFG sensor was manufactured using a high-frequency CO2 laser, and an innovative quasi-helical structure was introduced into the two-parameter measurement of the temperature and curvature of the optical fiber sensor with excellent results. The experiment and analysis demonstrate that the curvature sensitivities of the three resonance peaks in the 1440 nm to 1540 nm transmission spectrum were 11.88 nm/m−1, 8.05 nm/m−1, and 11.11 nm/m−1, and the curvature varied ranging from 0.156 m−1 to 0.494 m−1. The three resonance peaks showed temperature responsivities of 29.87 pm/°C, 24.65 pm/°C, and 36.85 pm/°C, respectively, and the linear fit was of excellent quality. In the case of measuring both curvature and temperature changes simultaneously, the resonant peak wavelength of the CQH-LPFG sensor was demodulated through matrix analysis, with dip A and dip C providing superior simultaneous measurements. These features make it a promising candidate for applications such as engineering machinery and the health inspection of buildings.

Abstract:An in-fiber interferometric curvature sensor based on few-mode fiber (FMF) with high sensitivity and broad measurement range has been proposed, and the simulation analysis and experimental verification have been accomplished. The interference of the SMF-MMF-FMF-MMF-SMF(SMFMS) hybrid structure predominantly arises between the core modes and the low-order cladding modes of the sensing fiber. Four sensors with varied lengths of FMF have been constructed, and in-depth study has been carried out from three aspects: curvature sensing, stability and temperature sensing. The experimental results have revealed that when utilizing a 7 mm MMF and an 8 mm FMF, the sensor has the maximum curvature sensitivity of −16.33 nm/m−1 from 0.881 m−1 to 3.065 m−1. The proposed curvature sensor exhibits the advantages of good stability, miniaturization and ability to solve temperature cross sensitivity problems without any additional means, thus provides a new solution for cost-effective and performance enhanced curvature measurement in practical applications.

Abstract:A novel two-parameter fiber sensor has been demonstrated, consisting of D-shaped composite fiber gratings (DCFG) which includes long period fiber grating (LPFG) and fiber Bragg grating (FBG) inscribed on D-shaped fiber. LPFG is inscribed on the side of D-shaped fiber by a high-frequency CO2 laser. On account of the asymmetry of the structure in 90° and 270° and refractive index modulation (RIM) in 0° and 180°, the sensor can recognize the bending directions. In the theory, it is proved that by adjusting the thickness of D-shaped fiber, the bending sensitivity can be enhanced in 90° and 270° directions. In the experiments, the fiber sensor achieves the sensitivity of curvature up to 13.70 nm/m−1, which is nearly two times as the similar structure without D-shaped fiber. The curvature and temperature sensitivities of LPFG and FBG are different in DCFG, so the proposed sensor can realize simultaneously measurement of curvature vector and temperature.

Abstract:A high sensitivity curvature sensor based on single-mode-tapered multimode-single-mode (STMS) fiber structure has been proposed and demonstrated theoretically and experimentally. Due to elastic-optical effect, light field distribution of the STMS structure would be asymmetric when bending is applied, resulting in a profound effect on the transmission characteristics of the STMS structure. The experimental results show a good agreement with the trend of the theoretical predictions. Adopting the intensity demodulation in experiments, an average sensitivity of -21.734 dB/m(-1) over the range of 0.7064 to 1.9129 m(-1) and the maximum sensitivity of -144.876 dB/ m(-1) at the curvature of 1.9129 m(-1) have been achieved. Besides, the dependence of temperature on the transmission spectrum of this curvature sensor has been investigated, showing a low temperature cross-sensitivity. Because of these superior properties, this curvature sensor could find useful applications in architecture, mechanical engineering, and medical science.

Abstract:We propose and theoretically study a new hollow-core fiber-based curvature sensor with the capability of detecting both bending magnitude and angle (direction). The new sensor relies on a tubular-lattice fiber that encompasses, in its microstructure, tubes with three different thicknesses. By adequately choosing the placement of the tubes within the fiber cross-section, and by exploring the spectral shifts of the fiber transmitted spectrum due to the curvature-induced mode field distributions' displacements, we demonstrate a multi-axis bending sensor. In the proposed sensor, curvature radii and angles are retrieved via a suitable calibration routine, which is based on conveniently adjusting empirical functions to the sensor response. Evaluation of the sensor performance for selected cases allowed to determine the curvature radii and angles with percentual errors of less than 7%. The approach proposed herein provides a promising path for the accomplishment of new curvature sensors able to resolve both the curvature magnitude and angle.

Abstract:A sensitivity-enhanced two-dimensional bending sensor using four-core fiber (FCF) transition to realized single-channel demodulation of seven-core fiber Bragg grating (FBG) is proposed. A section of FCF was added between the single-mode fiber (SMF) and the seven-core fiber (SCF), and the thermal diffusion technology (TDT) was used so that the signal of the SMF could be transmitted to the three side cores of the SCF through the FCF. Then, a 45° reflective circular cone (45° RCC) is fabricated at the end of the SCF, enabling the coupling of the symmetrical side core signals of the SCF. By inscribing the FBGs with different reflection wavelengths on the side cores of the SCF, the signals of each side core can be distinguished during single-channel demodulation. Monitoring the reflection wavelength shifts of the FBGs on the SCF can realize two-dimensional bending measurements. Furthermore, through the differential operation of the symmetrical side cores, the bending sensitivity can be enhanced while eliminating temperature crosstalk. The proposed sensor with high integration, high sensitivity, and reduced crosstalk, is expected to be applied in the field of structural inspection or interventional medical treatment.

Abstract:A simultaneous temperature and bend sensor based on an eccentric core fiber Bragg grating (ECFBG) cascaded with a Fabry-Perot cavity is presented and demonstrated. The hybrid structure is composed of a piece of hollow core fiber, which is sandwiched in between a piece of multimode fiber and an ECFBG. The curvature sensitivities of the ECFBG at the two opposite most sensitive directions are 52.2 pm/m−1 and −51.7 pm/m−1 respectively, and those of the FPI are 58.6pm/m−1 and −61.4 pm/m−1, respectively. The temperature sensitivities of the two parts are very different. The temperature sensitivity of the ECFBG is 10.3 pm/°c, and that of the FPI is as low as 0.7 pm/°c.

Abstract:In this work, we propose a fiber Bragg grating (FBG)-based sensor for curvature measurements. Two gratings are inscribed through the protective coating in a specialty optical fiber using focused femtosecond laser pulses and point-by-point direct writing technology. One grating is inscribed on the central core adjacent to an air channel, while the other is inscribed on the eccentric core. The bending characteristics of the two-core fiber strongly depend on the bending direction due to the asymmetry of the fiber cores. A bending sensitivity of 58 pm/m−1 is achieved by the FBG in the eccentric fiber core over the curvature range of 0–50 m−1. Temperature and humidity cross-sensitivity could be significantly reduced by analyzing the differences in peak shifts between the two gratings. The sensor features a large sensing range and good robustness due to the presence of its protective buffer coating, which makes it a good candidate for curvature sensing in engineering fields.

Abstract:Vector curvature measurement is very important in industrial fields with the unavoidable problem of temperature crosstalk. To improve the detection performance, a novel temperature-insensitive vector bending sensor have been proposed in the paper. The sensor is fabricated by core-offset splicing a segment of four-core fiber (FCF) between two single-mode fibers (SMFs). The Mach-Zehnder interference and the recognition ability of bending directions are enhanced by the core-offset structure. The experimental results demonstrate the curvature sensitivities of our sensor reach 38.16 nm/m −1 , 37.46 nm/m −1 , 4.99 nm/m −1 and −7.12 nm/m −1 in different bending directions within the range of 0.346–0.49 m −1 . The average temperature sensitivity is only −6.67 pm/°C in the range of 30–90 °C. The all-fiber, low cost, high sensitivity, and excellent vectoriality make our sensor more potential in harsh, complex industrial environment.

Abstract:We have proposed and experimentally demonstrated a novel optical fiber sensor for simultaneous measurement of high temperature and gas pressure based on a Regenerated Fiber Bragg grating (RFBG) cascaded with a homemade hollow core Bragg fiber (HCBF). The HCBF functions as an anti-resonant reflecting waveguide and acts as a pressure and temperature sensing unit. The sample was fabricated and tested in our lab, exhibiting a high linear pressure and temperature sensitivity of 3.747 nmMPa and 25.925 pmC in a large-dynamic range of 2 MPa and 600 C, respectively. The RFBG, as a temperature monitor, was integrated to compensate the temperature cross-correspondence of the HCBF. By utilizing a 2 2 matrix obtained with the experimental results, simultaneous measurement of temperature and gas pressure can be achieved. Besides, compact size, low cost and high sensitivity make the sensor more competitive in harsh environment application.

Abstract:We propose and experimentally demonstrate a sensitivity-enhanced fiber Bragg grating (FBG) curvature sensing system based on optoelectronic oscillator (OEO) with the enhanced Vernier effect. In this article, two FBGs with opposite wavelength shift directions are constructed by using the silicon plate, and the time delay of the two loops of OEO changes in opposite, thus realizing OEO-based sensitivity enhanced FBG curvature sensing system with the enhanced Vernier effect. The experimental results show that the sensitivity of single FBG curvature sensing system based on single-loop OEO is about 0.067 MHz/m−1, while the sensitivity of two FBGs-based curvature sensing system employing dual-loop OEO with the enhanced Vernier effect is 40.89 MHz/m−1, which is 612 times that of a single-loop OEO-based FBG curvature sensing system. Moreover, the proposed FBG curvature sensing system shows great temperature insensitivity characteristics, in which temperature sensitivity of the proposed curvature sensing system is 5.57 kHz/°C, and the curvature error caused by the change of 1 °C is , which shows potential for realizing high sensitivity, fast, real-time demodulation in temperature-insensitive FBG curvature sensing system.

Abstract:A directionally discriminable curvature sensor based on a chirped fiber Bragg grating Fabry–Perot interferometer (CFBG-FPI) is proposed and demonstrated by staggering two CFBGs in parallel in the fiber core with femtosecond laser point-by-point technology. The experimental results show that the light intensity of the interference dip tends to become stronger and weaker in two opposite bending directions, respectively, with a maximum sensitivity of 4.93 dB/m−1. This sensor has a temperature sensitivity of 2.31 × 10−4 dB/°C resulting in a cross-sensitivity as low as approximately 4.7 × 10−5 m−1/°C. The sensor is simple to manufacture, compact, and can be cascaded by multiple sensors to achieve multi-point detection, which is expected to play an important application in structural health detection.

Abstract:On-line fabricated fiber Bragg grating (FBG) array and its sensing potentials have attracted plenty of attention in recent years. In this paper, FBG arrays are written on-line on a two-mode fiber, and this two-mode fiber Bragg grating (TM-FBG) is further experimentally investigated for temperature and curvature sensing. The responses of this sensor were characterized by 11.2 pm/°C and −0.21 dB/m−1 for temperature and curvature, respectively. Based on the measurements, a dual-parameter fiber sensing system was developed, which can realize the quasi-distributed, simultaneous detection of temperature and curvature, making it suitable for structural health monitoring or perimeter security.
