Abstract:Self-assembled manganese cobalt oxide (Mn0.5Co2.5O4) nanofibers sandwiched in graphene sheets (Mn0.5Co2.5O4@G) are successfully synthesized by a hydrothermal treatment and annealing process. Owning to the unique sandwich-like structures, rich active sites, and boosted electrical conductivity, Mn0.5Co2.5O4@G composite demonstrates superior electrochemical performance for potential supercapacitors. In a three-electrode system, it exhibits excellent cycling stability with a specific capacitance retention of 93.8% after 10 000 cycles at a current density of 10 A g(-1,) and achieves specific capacitances of 617 and 434 F g(-1) at the ultrahigh current densities of 30 and 40 A g(-1), respectively. For an asymmetric supercapacitor of Mn0.5Co2.5O4@G/AC, high energy densities of 36.8 and 13.6 W h kg(-1) are also achieved at power densities of 147.3 and 3755.8 W kg(-1), respectively. It is believed that the synthesized Mn0.5Co2.5O4@G composite can be a promising electrode material for high-performance supercapacitors, and the present synthetic strategy can be further extended for designing many other functional composites with desirable nanostructures and performance.

Abstract:In this work, a facile growing laser-scribed graphene (LSG) process is successfully demonstrated, which can pattern in situ sulfur (S)-doped porous graphene electrodes on a flexible sodium lignosulfonate (SLS)-coated polyethersulfone (PES) film. The typical microsupercapacitors (MSCs) based on S-doped porous graphene deliver an ultrahigh areal capacitance of 55.4 mF cm−2, and have good long-term cycle stability with 85.2% capacitance retention after 10000 cycles. Moreover, these devices exhibit superb mechanical flexibility and outstanding modular integration capability. This novel fabrication approach can be extended to other heteroatom-doped electrode materials for application in high-performance energy storage devices.

Abstract:Hybrid nanocomposites comprised of metal oxide nanoparticles and three-dimensional (3D) graphene possess the advantages of metal oxide and graphene, which have generated extensive attention. Here, we fabricate flexible micro-supercapacitors (MSCs) based on hybrid materials of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNT)-bridged laser-induced graphene fibers (LIGF) decorated with manganese dioxide (MnO2) nanoparticles. SWCNT is deposited on the LIGF surface and the space between LIGF, which can bridge LIGF to form more conductive paths and provide more active areas to grow with MnO2 nanoparticles. Profiting from the synergistic effect between conductive SWCNT-bridged LIGF network and the MnO2 nanoparticles with high theoretical capacitance, the obtained flexible MSCs based on LIGF-C4/MnO2 hybrid electrodes deliver an outstanding areal capacitance of 156.94 mF cm-2, which is about 8 times higher than that of LIGF-MnO2 based MSC (20 mF cm-2). Additionally, the LIGF-C4/MnO2 MSCs also exhibit considerable areal energy density of 21.8 μWh cm-2, long-term cycling stability, remarkable modular integration capability, and exceptional mechanical flexibility (with 90.5% capacitance retention after 1200 bending cycles). Therefore, the design of hybrid electrode materials proposed in this work offers a facile and novel method to develop flexible energy storage devices with high performance, suggesting great prospects for applications in future various wearable electronics.

Abstract:Utilizing predefined electrode geometries, laser direct writing technology is employed to intricately inscribe flexible polyimide (PI) films, thereby inducing porous graphene patterned electrodes for flexible planar micro-supercapacitors (MSCs), which greatly facilitates the integration of MSCs into functional devices for power supply. Nevertheless, prevailing challenges confront current flexible MSCs relying on laser-induced graphene (LIG), including the constrained electrochemical functionality of pure LIG electrodes and the uneven incorporation of heterogeneous constituents within LIG electrodes. In light of these challenges, this study delves into the fundamental mechanism underlying the formation of polyimide (PI) films and introduces an innovative approach to uniformly integrate CuO nanoparticles into the poly (acrylic acid) (PAA) precursor solution. The subsequent imidization process culminates in the synthesis of a CuO-embedded PI film. The research progresses to the fabrication of shape-controllable CuO/LIG patterned electrodes utilizing a precision laser direct writing technique, and the subsequent construction of flexible planar MSCs. Harnessing the synergistic interactions between the dual components within the electrode, the resulting MSC possesses an impressive areal capacitance of 6.45 mF·cm -2 , coupled with an energy density of 0.896 mWh·cm -2 and a power density of 0.081 mW·cm -2 , thus illustrating the potential of this innovative material integration for high-performance flexible energy storage implementations.

Abstract:Electrochemical deposition of polyoxovanadate nanoclusters (K5(CH3CN)3[V12O32Cl] (= K5{V12}) onto the highly porous laser‐induced graphene (LIG) substrats results in tuning the electronic and electrochemical properties of LIG electrodes, and enabled the fabrication of flexible solid‐state supercapacitor with superior electrochemical performance and mechanical stability. The advancement of microelectronic devices mandates the development of flexible energy storage systems to enable the fabrication of miniaturized and wearable electronics. Herein, a sustainable approach is demonstrated for tuning the electronic and electrochemical properties of hierarchically porous laser‐induced graphene (LIG) substrates. The methodology entails the electrochemical deposition of polyoxovanadate nanoclusters (K5(CH3CN)3[V12O32Cl] (= K5{V12}) onto the highly porous LIG matrix. The comprehensive characterization is integrated through micro‐Raman spectroscopy and in‐depth X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy to elucidate the deposition mechanism and electronic properties of the fabricated electrode. The results indicate a significant correlation between the orientation of the deposited clusters and the non‐crystalline regions of the LIG structure. Additionally, the cluster deposition results in a reduction of grain boundary defects in the nano‐graphite lattice of LIG. The optimized electrode exhibits enhanced areal capacitance (CA) of 125 mF cm−2 at a current density of 0.1 mA cm−2, representing a fivefold improvement compared to the undoped LIG substrate. Furthermore, as a proof of concept, a flexible solid‐state symmetrical supercapacitor device, fabricated with a PVA‐H2SO4 gel electrolyte, demonstrates an areal capacitance of 24.92 mF cm−2 at current density of 0.1 mA cm−2 and exhibits exceptional cycling stability, enduring up to 5000 consecutive galvanostatic charge‐discharge cycles.

Abstract:Porous graphene with rational heteroatoms doping has been widely researched as one of the most prominent materials for application in supercapacitors. Herein, we implement a green and facile laser engraving strategy to synthesize three-dimensional (3D) superhydrophilic and oxygen (O)-sulfur (S) co-doped porous graphene electrodes. Specifically, the mixed sodium lignosulfonate slurry is evenly coated on the laser-induced graphene (LIG) interdigital electrodes, and followed by a duplicated laser scribing process. The as-prepared materials can synchronously possess hierarchical porous graphene architectures, superior hydrophilicity, and O/S co-doped chemistry properties, which can significantly promote the penetration and transport of electrolyte ions and provide extra pseudocapacitance. Benefiting from these advantages, satisfactory capacitive performance of the assembled MSCs is obtained, such as an outstanding areal capacitance of 53.2 mF cm−2@0.08 mA cm−2, which is about 39 times larger than of undoped MSC. Moreover, remarkable mechanical flexibility, excellent modular integration capability as well as good cycling stability (81.3% capacitance retention after 8000 cycles) have been also achieved. As such, this study offers a novel and efficient strategy for valuable utilization of biomass lignosulfonate, and the as-prepared heteroatom-doped superhydrophilic porous graphene holds enormous promise for high-performance energy storage devices.

Abstract:Manganese oxides/graphene is an electrode material currently under consideration for use in high-performance supercapacitors (SCs). The conventional, widely used wet chemical methods for preparing MnO2/graphene are tedious and consume large quantities of strong reduction/oxidation reagents. The resulting powder composites require adhesives to form a suitable electrode. In the present study, we report on a method for synthesizing MnO2/graphene composite electrodes using a second laser irradiation employing a laser of the polyether ether ketone. This simple and environmentally friendly method allows the patterning of electrodes together with the synthesis of the active materials. The MnO2/laser-induced graphene (LIG) electrode exhibited a high capacitance of 48.9 mF cm−2, which is about 2.4 times greater than a pure LIG electrode. Assembled all solid micro-supercapacitors (MSCs) containing the novel LIG electrodes delivered both high energy density (3.1 μWh cm−2) and power density (2.5 mW cm−2). These MSCs exhibited a capacitance retention of 94.3% over 3000 cycles, at a current density of 0.5 mA cm−2. The electrochemical performance was almost unaltered by bending the MSC to 150°. This method of synthesizing high-performance flexible electrodes is important for future development of wearable electronics.

Abstract:Herein, laser-induced graphene (LIG) derived from polyimide (PI) is demonstrated to construct a flexible planar interdigital microsupercapacitors (MSCs) device with wide voltage window through simple laser-direct-writing method. The mechanism study of LIG derived from PI show that the photon energy of the laser is absorbed by the electrons and converted into heat energy, and the rapid energy accumulation produces extremely high temperatures leading to the graphitization of PI film. At the same time, the internal expansion and gas escape from the interior, the graphitized carbon material grows upward, resulting in the formation of porous graphene. As a demonstration of the supercapacitor application, the as-prepared LIG MSCs device show excellent supercapacitance performance, wide voltage window (0–1.8 V) and good mechanical flexibility. When the laser power is 2.75 W, that is, 50 % of the maximum power, the resulting LIG MSCs device has a high specific capacitance of 20.85 mF cm −2 , a maximum energy density of 9.38 μWh cm −2 , and good cycle stability with a capacitance retention rate of 101.09 % after 15,000 cycles. This work provides a simple method to prepare graphene-based MSCs and demonstrates great potential of the LIG MSCs in flexible wearable electronic devices.

Abstract:Lignin as a renewable natural resource has been the focus of numerical interest in applications ranging from pitch to porous carbon material. Herein, a facile approach is reported to transform lignin into porous conductive carbon structures and interdigitated circuits for supercapacitor devices using femtosecond laser direct writing. Comparative studies revealed that the laser irradiation induced tetrahedral amorphous carbon while only graphitic carbon was obtained through pyrolysis. Meanwhile, the composite membrane was easily prepared to further optimize the capacities by mixing functional materials (MoS2) into the lignin/polyacrylonitrile (PAN) composite polymers. A MoS2 decorated porous carbon network material could be fabricated through focused femtosecond pulsed laser irradiation of the corresponding composite membranes. The microstructure and spectroscopic features of these laser induced hybrid carbon materials have been deeply investigated. The supercapacitor based on lignin/PAN has high areal specific capacitances of 6.7 mF cm−2 (0.9 F cm−3) at 10 mV s−1. Moreover, doped microsupercapacitors with MoS2 demonstrated enhanced areal capacitances up to 16 mF cm−2 (2.2 F cm−3) and at 10 mV s−1, respectively. The relatively high areal capacitances indicate that the proposed method is potential for innovative manufacturing energy storage devices based on natural lignin.

Abstract:Binary metal sulfide@ graphene composites have held great promising as electrode materials for supercapacitors (SCs). However, synthesis of nanosized binary metal sulfides that uniformly distribute on graphene in a simple way is still an enormous challenge. Herein we report a one-step solvothermal method employing poly (acrylic acid) (PAA) additive to fabricate well-dispersed nickel-cobalt sulfide nanoparticles on graphene (marked as NiCo-S@ G) used in both traditional and flexible supercapacitors. The Ni-Co-S@ G traditional electrode exhibits high specific capacitance at high rate (1021 F g(-1) at 20 A g(-1)) and high capacitance retention (92.1% after 5000 cycles at 10 A g(-1)). Such outstanding performances are benefited from its unique integrated nanostructure which offers rich electroactive surface sites as well as favourable conductivity. Furthermore, asymmetric supercapacitor (ASC) of Ni-Co-S@ G//reduced graphene hydrogels (RGH) delivers high energy density (39.5 Wh kg(-1) at power density of 1778 W kg(-1)) as well as excellent cycle stability (84.4% capacitance retention after 15,000 cycles). Abstract:As an energy storage component of wearable electronics, planar micro-supercapacitors (MSCs) hold great advantages in terms of flexibility, miniaturization, and integration. However, the preparation process of MSCs is rather cumbersome. A simple, fast, and efficient technique for preparing MSCs is still of strong desirability. Herein, a fast and efficient laser direct writing technique is proposed to in situ fabricate NiO nanoparticles anchored on N-doped laser-induced graphene (NiO/NLIG) composite electrodes on account of the formation principle of the polyimide (PI) film, which are subsequently assembled into high-performance flexible planar MSCs. The as-assembled NiO/NLIG MSCs can achieve a remarkable areal specific capacitance of 25.11 mF cm–2, a superior energy density of 1.88 mW h cm–2 at a high power density of 0.02 mW cm–2, excellent bendability, and good cycling performance. Furthermore, due to advantages of consistency and stability of laser direct writing, the proposed high-performance planar NiO/NLIG MSCs with consistency and stability can be easily modularized and integrated to provide customized requirements and are the most promising crucial micro-power energy storage components for flexible integrated electronics.

Abstract:Simple and scalable manufacturing of flexible energy storage units with high electrochemical performance is essential for wearable electronic devices. Herein, a carbon cloth (CC) coated with Mo ion homo‐dispersed hydrogel ink is used as a precursor for laser scribing, during which laser‐induced graphene/MoO2 (LIG/MoO2) is in‐situ synthesized on the substrate. By regulating the surface topography and nanoparticle distribution, the as‐prepared LIG/MoO2‐CC electrode shows a network structure composed of multiple core‐shell fibers. Among them, the carbon‐fiber core phase provides strong mechanical stability, and the in‐situ growth shell of LIG/MoO2 ensures high electrochemical performance. Experimentally, the MSCs assembled by interdigital electrodes can deliver an areal capacitance of 81.8 mF cm−2 and areal energy density of 113.7 μWh cm−2 at a power density of 2.5 mW cm−2, placing them among the best performing LIG‐based MSCs. Through the series‐parallel structure design of electrodes, the output voltage and total capacitance of MSCs can be adjusted according to the demands of actual applications, presenting a huge potential for integration with other wearable electronics.

Facile and Scalable Fabrication of High-Performance Microsupercapacitors Based on Laser-Scribed In Situ Heteroatom-Doped Porous Graphene

Abstract:This study proposes an efficient, facile, and scalable strategy to synthesize in situ heteroatom-doped porous graphene via laser direct writing on the precursor-doped polyimide (PI) film, which is fabricated for the first time through incorporating PI powder and precursors with sodium carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) binder by a drop-casting and low-temperature drying process. The resulting microsupercapacitors (MSCs) based on the as-prepared heteroatom-doped porous graphene exhibit remarkable capacitive performance. The typical boron-doped MSC prepared on borax-doped polyimide film possesses an ultrahigh areal capacitance of 60.6 mF cm–2 at 0.08 mA cm–2, which is approximately 20 times larger than that of undoped MSC. Furthermore, the boron-doped MSC has impressive cycling stability (with the capacitance retention of 96.3% after 20 000 cycles), exceptional mechanical flexibility, tunable capacitance, and voltage output through arbitrary modular serial and parallel integration. Besides, the nitrogen-doped porous graphene with excellent capacitive performance is also prepared by laser direct scribing on the sulfonated melamine-doped polyimide film, demonstrating excellent scalability and generality of this strategy. One‐Step Scalable Fabrication of Graphene‐Integrated Micro‐Supercapacitors with Remarkable Flexibility and Exceptional Performance Uniformity

Abstract:The rapid development of miniature electronics has accelerated the demand for simplified and scalable production of micro‐supercapacitors (MSCs); however, the preparation of active materials, patterning microelectrodes, and subsequent modular integration of the reported MSCs are normally separated and are involved in multiple complex steps. Herein, a one‐step, cost‐effective strategy for fast and scalable fabrication of patterned laser‐induced graphene (LIG) for all‐solid‐state planar integrated MSCs (LIG‐MSCs) with various form factors of designable shape, exceptional flexibility, performance uniformity, superior modularization, and high‐temperature stability is demonstrated. Notably, using the conductive and porous LIG patterns composed of randomly stacked graphene nanosheets simultaneously acting as both microelectrodes and interconnects, the resulting LIG‐MSCs represent typical electrical double capacitive behavior, having an impressive areal capacitance of 0.62 mF cm−2 and long‐term stability without capacitance degeneration after 10 000 cycles. Furthermore, LIG‐MSCs display exceptional mechanical flexibility and adjustable voltage and capacitance output through arbitrary arrangement of cells connected in series and in parallel, indicative of exceptional performance customization. Moreover, all‐solid‐state LIG‐MSCs working at ionogel electrolyte exhibit highly stable performance even at high temperature of 100 °C, with 90% capacitance retention over 3000 cycles, suggestive of outstanding reliability. Therefore, the LIG‐MSCs offer tremendous opportunities for miniature power source‐integrated microelectronics.

Microwave-assisted in Situ Synthesis of Cobalt Nanoparticles Decorated on Reduced Graphene Oxide As Promising Electrodes for Supercapacitors

Abstract:A series of cobalt nanoparticles/reduced graphene oxide (Co/RGO) composites have been successfully synthesized via a facile microwave-assisted synthetic route for the first time. The synthesized composites are comprised of Co particles that are uniformly anchored onto the surface of graphene sheets by in situ reducing. Powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectra (FTIR), Raman spectroscopy, Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray photoelectron spectra (XPS), and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) analysis are performed for systematically characterizing the microstructure and composition of the as-prepared Co/RGO composites. Interestingly, the as-prepared composites show superior electrochemical performance to their counterparts of Co and RGO as electrodes for supercapacitors. As a result, Co/RGO-15 composite exhibits a high specific capacitance of 370.7 F g(-1) at 5 mV s(-1) in 2 M KOH aqueous solution as well as good rate capability. The excellent electrochemical performances are due to the 3D graphene conductive network and the synergetic effect of RGO and Co particles. Meanwhile, the capacitance retention keeps about 92.3% of the initial value after 2000 cycles at a current density of 2 A g(-1), suggesting that such hybrid electrode possesses a great potential application in energy-storage devices. Laser-Induced Nitrogen-doped Graphene for High-Performance Flexible Supercapacitors

Abstract:In recent years, with development of electronic devices in the direction of miniaturization, portability and multifunctionality, higher requirements are put forward for supercapacitors, including ultra-thinness, flexibility, high electrochemical performance, scale-up capability, and low cost. Among various electrode materials developed for supercapacitors, laser-induced graphene (LIG) is a promising material because of its simple operation, no mask, high efficiency and scalability. However, the electrochemical performance of LIG needs to be further improved. Here, a one-step method has reported for fabricating laser-induced nitrogen-doped graphene (LING) by using a laser direct writing technology. A three-dimensional (3D) structure of LING was obtained by engraving the surface of urea-containing polyimide (PI) film with a pulsed laser. Considering the synergistic effect of high concentration nitrogen doping and 3D porous structure, LING-based thin-film supercapacitor showed an ultra-high volumetric capacitance over 1260 mF/cm(3), much higher than that of LIG, and no significant attenuation was observed after 100,000 cycles. Moreover, this method could prepare conductive lines and patterns on a flexible substrate with high efficiency and is expected to become an alternative method for preparing existing circuits or energy storage devices.
Binder-Free Laser Induced Graphene-Mno2 Composite Electrodes For High Areal Energy Density Flexible Supercapacitors

Abstract:The synthesis of Laser-Induced Graphene (LIG) through the laser ablation process of carbon-containing materials is a rapid and scalable process which enables the production of graphene in a cost-effective manner. In recent years, metal oxide – graphene composite electrodes have gained a lot of importance due to their use in various Energy Storage Devices (ESDs). In our investigation, we manufacture composite electrodes of manganese dioxide (MnO 2 ) and LIG through a hydrothermal process and use it as electrodes in Flexible Supercapacitors. This method deviates from traditional procedures as it eliminates the requirement for binders in creating composite electrodes, given that MnO 2 can be directly deposited onto the LIG electrodes. The assembled all-Flexible Supercapacitor (FSC), featuring unique LIG-MnO 2 composite electrodes, showcased a remarkable areal capacitance of 66.5 mF cm −2 at 5 mV s −1 scan rate. The device also exhibited a very high areal energy density (2.3 mWh cm −2 ) and power density (19.7 mW cm −2 ) at 0.2 mA cm −2 current density. Also, 82% capacitance retention was observed at the end of 2000 cycles and the device also exhibited a good flexibility during bending tests, as evidenced by an 80% capacitance retention after 100 bending cycles.

Abstract:Laser-induced graphene (LIG) typically exhibits a mesostructure with a small specific surface area, which is detrimental to the electrochemical performance of micro-supercapacitors (MSCs). Herein, 3D nanostructured LIGs patterned on fluorinated polyimides (fPIs) via a laser photothermal method are reported. During laser-induced graphitization, a highly microporous structure in the LIG develops. Consequently, the patterned LIG (LIG-fPI) exhibits a very large specific surface area (1126.0 m2 g–1), thereby enhancing its electrochemical performance. Specifically, in an H2SO4 aqueous electrolyte, the micropatterned electrode exhibits an exceptional areal capacitance of 110 mF cm–2 (determined by cyclic voltammetry), which is 27 times higher than that of a LIG based on commercial polyimides and at least 7 times higher than that of current state-of-the-art MSCs. Furthermore, mechanically stable and flexible LIG-fPI-MSCs with an organic gel polymer electrolyte (working potential = ∼3 V) show very high power and energy densities of 0.58 mW cm–2 and 0.01 mW h cm–2, respectively. Abstract:The surge in demand for personalized electronic products has fueled the emergence and development of flexible electronic technology, giving rise to flexible energy storage devices. An integral component in these devices is planar micro-supercapacitors (MSCs), which hold immense promise for compatibility with flexible electronic products, especially in terms of their miniaturization, flexibility, integration, and customization. In this study, a fast, efficient, and environmentally friendly laser scribing technique has been employed to pattern MXene and graphene oxide (MXene/GO) composite films to prepare shape-controllable MXene and laser scribed graphene (MXene/LSG) patterned electrodes on a flexible substrate, which were then constructed into flexible MSCs. Based on the synergistic effect of these two-dimensional materials, MXene and LSG, the resulting adaptable devices exhibit exceptional electrochemical performance, including high areal capacitance, long cycle stability, superior flexibility, and mechanical stability. Furthermore, the use of a laser scribing process has pivotal implications for the scalable production of patterned electrodes and modular integration.

Abstract:The design of lightweight and flexible micro-supercapacitors (MSCs) to couple with the unprecedented boom of microelectronics is extremely desirable but remains challenging. Herein, a facile and straightforward laser engraving and punching strategy has been reported to fabricate graphene-based planar MSCs with outstanding flexibility, superior modularization and programmable pore generation. The resulting planar flexible MSCs are free of external metal current collectors and separators, and exhibit high specific capacitance, outstanding rate capability and robust stability with 98.4% capacitance retention even after 25,000 cycles in the PVA/H2SO4 gel electrolyte. Notably, the output voltage and capacitance of our prepared MSCs are readily adjustable through simple serial and parallel connection, indicative of superior modularization and performance uniformity.
