Abstract:Non-conjugated polymer-derived functional nanocomposites are one of the important ways to develop multifunctional hybrids. By increasing the degree of crosslinking, their photophysical properties can be improved. PbS is a class of narrow bandgap infrared active materials. To avoid aggregation and passivation of the surface defects of PbS nanomaterials, a large number of organic and inorganic ligands are usually used. In this study, PbS/C composite nanosheets were synthesized with Pb2+ ion-crosslinked sodium alginate gel by one-pot carbonization. The resulting nanosheets were coated on untreated A4 printing paper, and the electrodes were the graphite electrodes with 5B pencil drawings. The photocurrent signals of the products were measured using typical 650, 808, 980, and 1064 nm light sources. The results showed that the photocurrent switching signals were effectively extracted in the visible and near-infrared regions, which was attributed to the mutual passivation of defects during the in situ preparation of PbS and carbon nanomaterials. At the same time, the resulting nanocomposite exhibited electrical switching responses to the applied strain to a certain extent. The photophysical and defect passivation mechanisms were discussed based on the aggregation state of the carbon hybrid and the interfacial electron interaction. This material would have potential applications in broadband flexible photodetectors, tentacle sensors, or light harvesting interdisciplinary areas. This study provided a facile approach to prepare a low-cost hybrid with external stimulus response and multifunctionality. These results show that the interfacial charge transfer is the direct experimental evidence of interfacial interaction, and the regulation of interfacial interaction can improve the physical and chemical properties of nanocomposites, which can meet the interdisciplinary application. The interdisciplinary and application of more non-conjugated polymer systems in some frontier areas will be expanded upon.
Interaction of polarization-sensitive surface photocurrents in semitransparent CuSe/Se film

Abstract:We demonstrate that the transverse polarization-sensitive photoresponse of the CuSe/Se nanocomposite film deposited on a transparent substrate depends on whether the film is irradiated from the air side or substrate side. In particular, the nanosecond photocurrent pulse is either bipolar or unipolar pulse depending on which interface beam hits first. The observed phenomenon can be described in terms of the interplay between counter-propagating photocurrents generated at the air/nanocomposite and substrate/nanocomposite interfaces due to the surface photogalvanic effect. Our experimental findings can be employed to control the amplitude and temporal profile of the photoresponse by changing the polarization of the excitation laser beam.
Processes in Resonant Domains of Metal Nanoparticle Aggregates and Optical Nonlinearity of Aggregates in Pulsed Laser Fields

Abstract:The specific optical nonlinearities inherent in aggregates of metal nanoparticles under pico- and nanosecond pulsed laser irradiation are studied in nanoparticle aggregates formed in silver hydrosols. The results of experimental studies of the correlation between the degree of aggregation of silver hydrosols and their nonlinear refraction index at the wavelengths 0.532 and 1.064 microns are discussed. The experiments revealed that nonlinear refraction index changes its sign at 1.064 microns as the degree of the hydrosol aggregation grows. The role of various processes occurring in resonant domains of aggregates and the kinetics of these processes under laser irradiation resulting in dynamic variation of the polarizability of aggregates are analyzed. The areas under study included the kinetics of particles displacement considering dissipative forces, heating of the particles and of the surrounding medium depending on the wavelength, intensity and duration of laser pulses. A theory of interaction of laser radiation with an elementary type domain - two bound silver nanoparticles - was developed to describe the kinetics of resonant domains photomodification in aggregates. This theory takes into account thermal, elastic, electrostatic and light induced effects. The experimental results on laser photomodification of silver particle aggregates are discussed in the context of our model. These results include photochromic and nonlinear optical effects, in particular, the nonlinear refraction and nonlinear absorption.

Abstract:The enhancement of light from semiconductors due to surface plasmons coupled resonantly to its emission is limited because of dissipation in the metal and is also restricted by the dielectric characteristics and homogeneity of the metal-semiconductor interface. We report a new mechanism based on electrostatic interactions of carriers and their image charges in metals to generate more photons from optical sources at frequencies that are off-resonant to the localized plasmon frequency. Coulomb catalysis of carrier accumulation resulting from the inhomogeneity of metal nanodroplets on a semiconductor's surface can result in an enhancement of light that is nondissipative and does not require resonant coupling of plasmons to the emission wavelength. The enhancement occurs because of an increase in the ratio of radiative to nonradiative recombination in the vicinity of metal nanoparticles. It is equally effective with any type of metal and enhances radiation at any frequency, a property that is of principal importance for the realization of widely tunable semiconductor emitters. This fundamental mechanism provides a new perspective for improving the efficiency of light emitters and controlling carrier concentration on the nanoscale. The structural characteristics of the hybrid metal-semiconductor emitters are studied using electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy. We demonstrate the electrostatic mechanism by studying steady-state and transient photoluminescence from two-dimensional semiconductors, such as GaAs/AlGAs quantum wells, and bulk semiconductors, such as ZnO thin films, emitting in the near-IR and UV wavelength regimes, respectively.

Experimental characterization of photoemission from plasmonic nanogroove arrays

Abstract:Metal photocathodes are an important source of high-brightness electron beams, ubiquitous in the operation of both large-scale accelerators and table-top microscopes. When the surface of a metal is nano-engineered with patterns on the order of the optical wavelength, it can lead to the excitation and confinement of surface plasmon polariton waves which drive nonlinear photoemission. In this work, we aim to evaluate gold plasmonic nanogrooves as a concept for producing bright electron beams for accelerators via nonlinear photoemission. We do this by first comparing their optical properties to numerical calculations from first principles to confirm our ability to fabricate these nanoscale structures. Their nonlinear photoemission yield is found by measuring emitted photocurrent as the intensity of their driving laser is varied. Finally, the mean transverse energy of this electron source is found using the solenoid scan technique. Our data demonstrate the ability of these cathodes to provide a tenfold enhancement in the efficiency of photoemission over flat metals driven with a linear process. We find that these cathodes are robust and capable of reaching sustained average currents over 100 nA at optical intensities larger than 2 GW/cm$^2$ with no degradation of performance. The emittance of the generated beam is found to be highly asymmetric, a fact we can explain with calculations involving the also asymmetric roughness of the patterned surface. These results demonstrate the use of nano-engineered surfaces as enhanced photocathodes, providing a robust, air-stable source of high average current electron beams with great potential for industrial and scientific applications.

Polarization-Dependent Photocurrent In Mos2 Phototransistor

Abstract:Monolayer or few-layer molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) has attracted increasing interests in studying light-induced electronic effect due to its prominent photo-responsivity at visible spectral range, fast photo-switching rate and high channel mobility. However, the atomically thin layers make the interaction between light and matter much weaker than that in bulk state, hampering its application in two-dimensional material optoelectronics. One of recent efforts was to utilize resonantly enhanced localized surface plasmon for boosting light-matter interaction in MoS2 thin layer phototransistor. Randomly deposited metallic nano-particles were previously reported to modify surface of a back-gated MoS2 transistor for increasing light absorption cross-section of the phototransistor. Wavelength-dependent photocurrent enhancement was observed. In this paper, we report on a back-gated multilayer MoS2 field-effect-transistor (FET), whose surface is decorated with oriented gold nanobar array, of which the size of a single nanobar is 60nm:60nm:120nm. With these oriented nanostructures, photocurrent of the MoS2 FET could be successfully manipulated by a linear polarized incident 633nm laser, which fell into the resonance band of nanobar structure. We find that the drain-source current follows cos20 relationship with respect to the incident polarization angle. We attribute the polarization modulation effect to the localized enhancement nature of gold nanobar layer, where the plasmon enhancement occurs only when the polarization of incident laser parallels to the longitudinal axis of nanobars and when the incident wavelength matches the resonance absorption of nanobars simultaneously. Our results indicate a promising application of polarization-dependent plasmonic manipulation in two-dimension semiconductor materials and devices.

Abstract:This study presents a novel interdisciplinary approach for characterizing the optical properties of nanostructured silver films, combining methodologies from polarized light spectroscopy (PLS) and mobile app-based spectroscopic image detection. Silver nanofilms were deposited using electron beam evaporation (EBE) and subsequently analyzed for their absorbance across the visible light spectrum through PLS spectroscopy. The innovative aspect of this study lies in the validation of PLS spectral data using a mobile application developed with MIT App Inventor, which analyzes the intensity of light beams captured in images taken by a smartphone. The findings indicate that the silver nanofilm exhibits peak absorbance at approximately 400 nm within the violet region, corroborated by the mobile app's data, which shows the lowest light intensity. However, discrepancies were observed from 500 to 600 nm, likely due to ambient light interferences and inherent optical phenomena such as diffraction, reflection, and refraction. Despite these deviations, the app's readings closely align with the PLS data, supporting the film's selective absorption properties. This study demonstrates the potential of this multidisciplinary technique in nanomaterial research, highlighting the application of nanotechnology in material science and the transformative potential of integrating software engineering for in-depth material characterization. These findings open avenues for advancements in both academic and practical applications.

Abstract:Surface plasmons on silver nanostructures have a broad range of tunable resonance properties in visible and near-infrared regimes, which possess wide applications in nanophotonics and optoelectronics. Here we use a femtosecond laser to excite surface plasmons on a silver film and trace the subsequent transient dynamics via photon-induced near-field electron microscopy (PINEM). A polarization experiment of PINEM demonstrates a conspicuous polarization dependence of the transient surface plasmon field on the silver film; however, unlike silver nanowires and nanorods, there is no polarization dependence for the PINEM intensity. This compelling finding suggests a thin film platform can be more easily used to identify the temporal and spatial overlaps between the pump laser and probe electron pulses in 4D ultrafast electron microscopy (UEM). Abstract:Polymer–metal composite films with nanostructured metal and/or polymer interfaces show a significant perspective for optoelectronic applications, for example, as sensors or in organic photovoltaics (OPVs). The polymer components used in these devices are mostly nanostructured conductive polymers with conjugated π-electron systems. Enhanced OPV’s power conversion efficiencies or sensor sensitivity can be achieved by selective metal deposition on or into polymer templates. In this study, we exploit time-resolved grazing-incidence X-ray scattering to observe the metal–polymer interface formation and the cluster crystallite size in situ during silver (Ag) sputter deposition on a poly(3-hexylthiophene-2,5-diyl)-b-poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA-b-P3HT) template. We compare the arising nanoscale morphologies with electronic properties, determine Ag growth regimes, and quantify the selective Ag growth for the diblock copolymer (DBC) template using the corresponding homopolymer thin films (P3HT and PMMA) as a reference. Hence, we are able to describe the influence of the respective polymer blocks and substrate effects on the Ag cluster percolation: the percolation threshold is correlated with the insulator-to-metal transition measured in situ with resistance measurements during the sputter deposition. The Ag cluster percolation on PMMA-b-P3HT starts already on the network of the hexagonal P3HT domain before a complete metal film covers the polymer surface, which is complemented by microscopic measurements. In general, this study demonstrates a possible method for the selective Ag growth as a scaffold for electrode preparation in nanoelectronics and for energy harvesting applications.

Abstract:Understanding the photophysical interactions between the components in organic-inorganic nanocomposites is a key factor for their efficient application in optoelectronic devices. In particular, the photophysical study of nanocomposites based on organic conjugated polymers is rare. We investigated the effect of surface plasmon resonance (SPR) of gold nanoparticles (Au NPs) on the photoluminescence (PL) property of a push-pull conjugated polymer (PBDB-T). We prepared the hybrid system by incorporating poly(3-hexylthiophene)-stabilized Au NPs (P3HT-Au NPs) into PBDB-T. The enhanced and blueshifted PL was observed in the hybrid system compared to PL in a neat PBDB-T system, indicating that the P3HT chains attached to the Au NPs suppressed charge-transfer from PBDB-T to the Au NPs and relayed the hot electrons to PBDB-T (the band-filling effect). This photophysical phenomenon limited the auto-dissociation of PBDB-T excitons. Thus, the radiative recombination of the excitons occurred more in our hybrid system than in the neat system.© 2021 Chinese Laser Press

Electron Photoemission in Plasmonic Nanoparticle Arrays: Analysis of Collective Resonances and Embedding Effects

Abstract:We theoretically study the characteristics of photoelectron emission in plasmonic nanoparticle arrays. Nanoparticles are partially embedded in a semiconductor, forming Schottky barriers at metal/semiconductor interfaces through which photoelectrons can tunnel from the nanoparticle into the semiconductor; photodetection in the infrared range, where photon energies are below the semiconductor band gap (insufficient for band-to-band absorption in semiconductor), is therefore possible. The nanoparticles are arranged in a sparse rectangular lattice so that the wavelength of the lattice-induced Rayleigh anomalies can overlap the wavelength of the localized surface plasmon resonance of the individual particles, bringing about collective effects from the nanoparticle array. Using full-wave numerical simulations, we analyze the effects of lattice constant, embedding depth, and refractive index step between the semiconductor layer and an adjacent transparent conductive oxide layer. We show that the presence of refractive index mismatch between media surrounding the nanoparticles disrupts the formation of a narrow absorption peak associated with the Rayleigh anomaly, so the role of collective lattice effects in the formation of plasmonic resonance is diminished. We also show that 5 to 20-times increase of photoemission can be achieved on embedding of nanoparticles without taking into account dynamics of ballistic electrons. The results obtained can be used to increase efficiency of plasmon-based photodetectors and photovoltaic devices. The results may provide clues to designing an experiment where the contributions of surface and volume photoelectric effects to the overall photocurrent would be defined.

Abstract:We demonstrate that the temporal profile of the transverse nanoseсond photovoltage pulse generated in the thin semiсonduсtor СuSe/t-Se nanoсomposite film under irradiation with elliptiсally polarized femtoseсond pulse is determined by the interplay of linear and сirсular photoсurrents. These photoсurrents have different durations indiсating the dependenсe of the relaxation time of the photogenerated сarriers on their spin. The interplay of photoсurrent results in the generation of either unipolar or bipolar pulse with temporal profile dependent on the handedness, shape, and orientation of the polarization ellipse of the laser beam relative to the plane of incidence.
Polarization dependent, surface plasmon induced photoconductance in gold nanorod arrays

Abstract:We report on the photoconductance in two-dimensional arrays of gold nanorods which is strongly enhanced at the frequency of the longitudinal surface plasmon of the nanorods. The arrays are formed by a combination of droplet deposition and stamping of gold nanorod solutions on SiO2 substrates. We find that the plasmon induced photoconductance is sensitive to the linear polarization of the exciting photons. We interpret the occurrence of the photoconductance as a bolometric enhancement of the arrays' conductance upon excitation of the longitudinal surface plasmon resonance of the nanorods.

Abstract:Prism coupling in the Kretschmann configuration is a well-known method for the excitation of surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) in thin films bounded from one side by a prism and from the other side by air. Based on the Kretschmann configuration, we experimentally study the transport properties of a silver thin film with a thickness of 55 nm and a width of 500 μm undergoing total internal reflection. We observe considerable negative photoconductivity in the film induced by the SPPs excited in this configuration and find that both SPP-electron interactions and SPP-induced heating have contributions to the negative photoconductivity. We believe that the new phenomena, which result from the combination of photonics and electronics, will be useful in relative technical applications and scientific research.

Abstract:This work aims to study the photo-response of the fabricated silicon-based Al/PVP:ZnTiO 3 /p-Si photodiode (PD) in a wide range of illumination intensities. To make a metal-polymer/nanocomposite-semiconductor (MPS) PD, a thin film of PVP:ZnTiO 3 nanocomposite is deposited at the interface of the metal-semiconductor (MS) structure. Information regarding the preparation and manufacturing procedures is provided. Through the examination of the current-voltage (I–V) behavior, essential electrical properties such as leakage current (I 0 ), barrier height (Φ B0 ), ideality factor (n), series and shunt resistances (R s , R sh ), energy-dependent interface states density (N ss ), photocurrent (I ph ), and photosensitivity (S) are acquired. The thermionic emission (TE) theory, along with the Norde and Cheung methods, is employed to calculate the parameters Φ B0 , n, and Rs. The values of Φ B0 and R s are decreased by raising the illumination intensity while the n value is increased. In addition, the illumination coefficient (α) and the value of Φ B0 in the ideal case are determined from the Φ B0 -P and Φ B0 -n plots. The efficiency (η) of the sample is calculated at each illumination intensity whose maximum value is 2.30 % at the intensity of 450 mW/cm 2 . The illumination-dependent photocurrent is investigated at the negative bias region that shows a good linear behavior in the ln(I ph )-ln(P) profile. The photosensitivity (S) of the fabricated PD is obtained as ⁓500 which is, compared with previous PDs. These findings demonstrate that the developed silicon-based MPS-type PD with a structure of Al/PVP:ZnTiO 3 /p-Si exhibits a good photo-response and can successfully replace traditional MS PDs in optoelectronic and photovoltaic applications.

Abstract:Pulsed EMF in resistive thick-film Ag–Pd elements is experimentally studied when their surface is irradiated with a laser beam. The dependences of the pulsed EMF on the coordinate of the action of the laser beam on the film surface are obtained. It is shown that applying a constant bias voltage to a thick-film resistive element can significantly increase the amplitude of unipolar EMF pulses induced by laser pulses. It was found that the amplitude and frequency of the EMF signals depend, respectively, on the power and frequency of laser pulses. It is shown that by the value of the pulsed EMF it is possible to control the parameters of the high-power laser radiation incident on the surface in real time. The design of a receiver for recording the parameters of laser radiation based on an Ag–Pd sensitive element has been developed. The sensitivity of the device for measuring the power and pulse repetition rate is estimated.

Abstract:Nanocomposite matrices of silver/poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT) were prepared in ultrahigh vacuum through vapor-phase co-deposition. Change in microstructure, chemical nature and electronic properties with increasing filler (Ag) content were investigated using in-situ XPS and UPS, and ambient AFM. At least two chemical binding states occur between Ag nanoparticles and sulfur in P3HT at the immediate contact layer but no evidence of interaction between Ag and carbon (in P3HT) was found. AFM images reveal a change in Ag nanoparticles size with concentration which modifies the microstructure and the average roughness of the surface. Under co-deposition, P3HT largely retains its conjugated structures, which is evidenced by the similar XPS and UPS spectra to those of P3HT films deposited on other substrates. We demonstrate here that the magnitude of the barrier height for hole injection and the position of the highest occupied band edge (HOB) with respect to the Fermi level of Ag can be controlled and changed by adjusting the metal (Ag) content in the composite. Furthermore, UPS reveals distinct features related to the C 2p (Sigma states) in the 5-12 eV regions, indicating the presence of ordered P3HT which is different from solution processed films.

Abstract:Computer users vary greatly in their abilities to use a software interface efficiently. One factor that apparently affects users’ efficiency in using an interface is the changes in their skill levels. In this study, an adaptive interface (of menu and command) is presented that dynamically adjusts to users’ changing skill levels. The mechanism of an adaptive interface is described and discussed. The validity and usability of the adaptive interface is tested with 40 participants in an experiment that used a between‐subject experimental design for interface style. The independent variables were interface style (menu, command, hybrid, and adaptive) and skill level (starting session and ending sessions). The dependent variables were task completion time, number of steps used, ratio (of using menu mode over menu and command modes), perceived memory load, and satisfaction with the interface styles. Abstract:Nano-patterned photocathodes (NPC) take advantage of plasmonic effects to resonantly increase absorption of light and localize electromagnetic field intensity on metal surfaces leading to surface-plasmon enhanced photoemission. In this paper, we report the status of NPC research at UCLA including in particular the optimization of the dimensions of a nanohole array on a silver wafer to enhance plasmonic response at 800 nm light, the development of a spectrally-resolved reflectivity measurement setup for quick nanopattern validation, and of a novel cathode plug to enable high power tests of NPCs on single crystal substrates in a high gradient radiofrequency gun.

Abstract:Plasmonic nanofabrication beyond the diffraction limit of light is based on chemical and electrochemical reactions induced by plasmonic near field, and it has been applied to the construction of functional nanomaterials and nanodevices. Generation of optical near field is possible even at nonplasmonic dielectric nanostructures including semiconductors. In the present work, we employed In:ZnO as a semiconductor photocatalyst. Hexagonal In:ZnO nanoplates were adsorbed onto a glass plate and irradiated with linearly polarized UV light to drive reductive deposition of Ag. The optical near field induced by the polarized light gave site-selective Ag deposition and, thereby, optical anisotropy reflected by linear dichroism (LD) signals. The optical anisotropy was not introduced by unpolarized UV light. The LD spectra were successfully reproduced by electromagnetic simulations.
