Abstract:We investigate the potential for replacing inorganic semiconductors with polymeric semiconductors in medical X-ray imaging applications. Polymeric semiconductors are soft and can be fabricated using techniques such as spin coating and jet printing, leading to reductions in fabrication costs for large-area arrays, easy integration of heterostructures and composite materials and the possibility of using flexible substrates. By using a combined cascaded linear systems and Monte-Carlo model to simulate the imaging system, we establish a set of semiconductor requirements for a feasible flat-panel imager (FPI).We have fabricated photodiodes and thin-film transistors (TFTs) out of a variety of polymer materials. Polymer photodiodes coupled to phosphor screens have shown a response to X-ray radiation with a good efficiency. Both transistors and photodiodes were sufficiently radiation hard for use in clinical imaging conditions. A composite phosphor polymer material has been fabricated and has been found to be compatible with polymeric photodiodes. Abstract:Materials that exhibit visible luminescence upon X-ray irradiation show great potential in the medical and industrial fields. Pure organic materials have recently emerged as promising scintillators for X-ray detection and radiography, due to their diversified design, low cost, and facile preparation. However, recent progress in efficient radioluminescence has mainly focused on small molecules, which are inevitably associated with processability and repeatability issues. Here, a concise strategy is proposed to prepare radioluminescent polymers that exhibit multiple emission colors from blue to yellow with high brightness in an amorphous state by the radical copolymerization of negatively charged polyacrylic acid and different positively charged quaternary phosphonium salts. One of the obtained polymers exhibits excellent photostability under a high X-ray irradiation dosage of 27.35 Gy and has a detection limit of 149 nGy s(-1). This performance is superior to that of conventional anthracene-based scintillators. Furthermore, by simply drop-casting a polymer methanol solution on a quartz plate, a transparent scintillator screen was successfully fabricated for X-ray imaging with a resolution of 8.7 line pairs mm(-1). The pure organic phosphorescent polymers with a highly efficient radioluminescence were demonstrated for the first time, and the strategy reported herein offers a promising pathway to expand the application range of amorphous organic scintillators.
Printable ionizing radiation sensors fabricated from nanoparticulate blends of organic scintillators and polymer semiconductors

Abstract:This work established the feasibility of flexible solution-processed radiation sensors prepared from an organic scintillator (1-phenyl-3-mesityl-2-pyrazoline) and a biocompatible semiconducting polymer (violanthrone-79). Absorbance, steady-state, and time-resolved photoluminescence measurements demonstrated a high efficiency for the transfer of absorbed energy from the scintillator to the semiconductor. Blended nanoparticles containing both materials were fabricated in order to reduce the intermolecular distance between molecules, creating a highly efficient energy transfer pathway. Radiation-sensing devices were then constructed from the materials. These exhibited successful sensitivity for gamma radiation from a 137Cs source that was not present for the control semiconducting polymer alone.

Abstract:Abstract Advances in flexible and printable electronics have paved the way for large-area, and low-cost wearable electronics that will revolutionize the way we detect and monitor ionizing radiation. The improvements to early detection and widespread use of treatment procedures of tumors and other illnesses using ionizing radiation have led to the rapid increase in the yearly dose exposure to the public. Therefore, safety organizations must introduce stricter quality assurance measures to ensure the safe delivery of the total dose to the patient—only achievable using live monitoring systems, named in-vivo dosimetry. Such systems would also benefit the safety of professional personnel employed in areas that encounter higher exposures of ionizing radiation including nuclear plants, space exploration, flight staff, and research beamline facilities. However, the current real-time detectors employ expensive and rigid high-Z materials including silicon, germanium, and cadmium telluride, that suffer substantial limitations in monitoring the dose deposited in biological tissue and conforming to the complex contours of the human body over large areas. We provide insights into the innovative materials capable of solution-based device fabrication onto flexible substrates with foreseeable avenues towards low-cost large-area printing techniques. This discussion will also review and identify the advantages and existing capabilities of tissue-equivalent materials in the detection of ionizing radiation as the ideal materials for in-vivo dosimetry. Finally, the radiation tolerance of organic materials is outlined to demonstrate that extensive investigations are still required before their utilization as radiation detectors.

Tissue Equivalent Curved Organic X-ray Detectors Utilizing High Atomic Number Polythiophene Analogues

Abstract:Organic semiconductors are a promising material candidate for X-ray detection. However, the low atomic number (Z) of organic semiconductors leads to poor X-ray absorption thus restricting their performance. Herein, the authors propose a new strategy for achieving high-sensitivity performance for X-ray detectors based on organic semiconductors modified with high -Z heteroatoms. X-ray detectors are fabricated with p-type organic semiconductors containing selenium heteroatoms (poly(3-hexyl)selenophene (P3HSe)) in blends with an n-type fullerene derivative ([6,6]-Phenyl C71 butyric acid methyl ester (PC70 BM). When characterized under 70, 100, 150, and 220 kVp X-ray radiation, these heteroatom-containing detectors displayed a superior performance in terms of sensitivity up to 600 ± 11 nC Gy-1 cm-2 with respect to the bismuth oxide (Bi2 O3 ) nanoparticle (NP) sensitized organic detectors. Despite the lower Z of selenium compared to the NPs typically used, the authors identify a more efficient generation of electron-hole pairs, better charge transfer, and charge transport characteristics in heteroatom-incorporated detectors that result in this breakthrough detector performance. The authors also demonstrate flexible X-ray detectors that can be curved to a radius as low as 2 mm with low deviation in X-ray response under 100 repeated bending cycles while maintaining an industry-standard ultra-low dark current of 0.03 ± 0.01 pA mm-2 .
Toward Low-Voltage and High-Sensitivity Direct X-ray Detectors Based on Thick Bulk Heterojunction Organic Device

Abstract:Organic semiconducting materials are promising for the fabrication of flexible ionizing radiation detectors for imaging because of their tissue equivalence, simple large-scale processing, and mass production. However, it is challenging to achieve high-sensitivity detection for organic direct detectors prepared by low-cost solution processing because of the compromise between thickness and carrier transport. In this study, high-performance organic direct X-ray detectors were fabricated by building a micrometer-thick bulk heterojunction (BHJ) using poly(3-hexylthiophene-2,5-diyl) (P3HT):(6,6)-phenyl c71 butyric acid methyl ester. A 5 μm BHJ film was fabricated by drop-casting and enhanced crystallization of P3HT using binary solvents and high-boiling-point additives to improve the charge carrier mobility. Furthermore, this organic direct X-ray detector has a sensitivity of >654.26 μC Gyair s-1 and a self-powered response. Because of the architecture of the thick active layer and the energy cascade in this diode detector, it has a very low dark current of 46.26 pA at -2 V. A fast and efficient approach was developed for fabricating thick, highly mobile organic BHJ films for high-performance direct X-ray detectors. It has great potential for application in a new generation of flexible and portable large-area flat-panel detectors.
Printable and Flexible Phototransistors Based on Blend of Organic Semiconductor and Biopolymer

Abstract:Printable and flexible organic phototransistors (OPTs) make comprehensive requirements for the organic semiconductors (OSCs), including high photosensitivity, decent transistor characteristics, appropriate solution viscosity, and good film flexibility. It has been challenging to obtain such semiconductors. Here, we demonstrated that by taking advantage of the interfacial charge effect, printable and flexible OPTs with high performance can be successfully fabricated through simply blending common OSCs with polymers. Using 2,7‐dioctyl[1]benzothieno[3,2‐b][1]benzothiophene and an insulating biopolymer polylactide, OPTs with blended and layered structure are both fabricated and investigated. The photoresponses of the OPTs can be modulated by gate voltage over 1000 times, and their responsivities are measured up to 400 A W−1. As compared to the layered OPTs, the blended ones exhibit higher photocurrent to dark current ratio (up to 105) and better light detection limit (lower than 0.02 mW cm−2). The improvements are attributed to larger interfacial area and more intensive charge trapping effect. The flexible OPTs are further fabricated by inkjet printing the blended solution. This work presents OPTs with comprehensive advantages including low cost, enhanced photosensitivity, great flexibility, and printability, which are realized by simply blending common OSC with polymer, and thus provide an inspiration for the design of novel organic electronics.

Abstract:Bithenopyrroliedione (biTPD)‐based polymer donor, PBDT‐biTPD, is designed for portable X‐ray detectors. PBDT‐biTPD:PCBM OPD shows a well‐minimized dark current density and high spectral responsivity at a negative bias (−2.0 V). Printed OPD is developed by slot‐die coating for use in X‐ray detectors, which shows reliable X‐ray detection with a low detection limit of 3 mA. The development of portable X‐ray detectors is necessary for diagnosing fractures in unconscious patients in emergency situations. However, this is quite challenging because of the heavy weight of the scintillator and silicon photodetectors. The weight and thickness of X‐ray detectors can be reduced by replacing the silicon layer with an organic photodetectors. This study presents a novel bithienopyrroledione‐based polymer donor that exhibits excellent photodetection properties even in a thick photoactive layer (~700 nm), owing to the symmetric backbone and highly soluble molecular structure of bithienopyrroledione. The ability of bithienopyrroledione‐based polymer donor to strongly suppress the dark current density (Jd ~ 10−10 A cm−2) at a negative bias (−2.0 V) while maintaining high responsivity (R = 0.29 A W−1) even at a thickness of 700 nm results in a maximum shot‐noise‐limited specific detectivity of Dsh* = 2.18 × 1013 Jones in the organic photodetectors. Printed organic photodetectors are developed by slot‐die coating for use in X‐ray detectors, which exhibit Dsh* = 2.73 × 1012 Jones with clear rising (0.26 s) and falling (0.29 s) response times upon X‐ray irradiation. Detection reliability is also proven by linear response of the X‐ray detector, and the X‐ray detection limit is 3 mA.

Abstract:An air‐stable, solution‐processed, and flexible X‐ray detector, based on hybrid perovskite and organic thin films incorporated in photodiode architecture, is reported. The unencapsulated flexible device, working in passive operation (0 V) and in ambient conditions, shows sensitivity as high as 5.2 μC Gy−1 cm−2 which is retained within 25% after 42 days in air. Solution‐processed organic and hybrid semiconductor materials have great potential for ionizing radiation direct detection, as they combine high sensitivity, low‐power consumption, and flexibility. There is, however, an open challenge related to the stability in ambient/operational conditions of this class of devices. In this work, an air‐stable, solution‐processed and flexible X‐ray detector is reported, based on the integration of hybrid perovskite and organic thin films used as active layer and functional interlayers, respectively. The diode architecture and the engineering of the interface between the hybrid perovskite and the organic hole transporting material (solvent‐modified poly(3,4‐ethylenedioxythiophene):polystyrene sulfonate) is the key to achieve enhanced detector's air stability and performance. The unencapsulated flexible device, measured in air and in passive operation (0 V), shows a limit‐of‐detection of 0.37 ± 0.04 μGy s−1 and a sensitivity as high as 5.2 μC Gy−1 cm−2, which is retained within 25% after 42 days exposure to ambient conditions.

Low-cost flexible thin-film detector for medical dosimetry applications

Abstract:The purpose of this study is to characterize dosimetric properties of thin film photovoltaic sensors as a platform for development of prototype dose verification equipment in radiotherapy. Towards this goal, flexible thin-film sensors of dose with embedded data acquisition electronics and wireless data transmission are prototyped and tested in kV and MV photon beams. Fundamental dosimetric properties are determined in view of a specific application to dose verification in multiple planes or curved surfaces inside a phantom. Uniqueness of the new thin-film sensors consists in their mechanical properties, low-power operation, and low-cost. They are thinner and more flexible than dosimetric films. In principle, each thin-film sensor can be fabricated in any size (mm² - cm² areas) and shape. Individual sensors can be put together in an array of sensors spreading over large areas and yet being light. Photovoltaic mode of charge collection (of electrons and holes) does not require external electric field applied to the sensor, and this implies simplicity of data acquisition electronics and low power operation. The prototype device used for testing consists of several thin film dose sensors, each of about 1.5 cm × 5 cm area, connected to simple readout electronics. Sensitivity of the sensors is determined per unit area and compared to EPID sensitivity, as well as other standard photodiodes. Each sensor independently measures dose and is based on commercially available flexible thin-film aSi photodiodes. Readout electronics consists of an ultra low-power microcontroller, radio frequency transmitter, and a low-noise amplification circuit implemented on a flexible printed circuit board. Detector output is digitized and transmitted wirelessly to an external host computer where it is integrated and processed. A megavoltage medical linear accelerator (Varian Tx) equipped with kilovoltage online imaging system and a Cobalt source are used to irradiate different thin-film detector sensors in a Solid Water phantom under various irradiation conditions. Different factors are considered in characterization of the device attributes: energies (80 kVp, 130 kVp, 6 MV, 15 MV), dose rates (different ms × mA, 100-600 MU/min), total doses (0.1 cGy-500 cGy), depths (0.5 cm-20 cm), irradiation angles with respect to the detector surface (0°-180°), and IMRT tests (closed MLC, sweeping gap). The detector response to MV radiation is both linear with total dose (~1-400 cGy) and independent of dose rate (100-600 Mu/min). The sensitivity per unit area of thin-film sensors is lower than for aSi flat-panel detectors, but sufficient to acquire stable and accurate signals during irradiations. The proposed thin-film photodiode system has properties which make it promising for clinical dosimetry. Due to the mechanical flexibility of each sensor and readout electronics, low-cost, and wireless data acquisition, it could be considered for quality assurance (e.g., IMRT, mechanical linac QA), as well as real-time dose monitoring in challenging setup configurations, including large area and 3D detection (multiple planes or curved surfaces).

Abstract:We made and characterized an X-ray detector on a 25- $\mu \text{m}$ -thick plastic substrate that is capable of medical-grade performance. As an indirect conversion flat panel detector, it combined a standard scintillator with an organic photodetector (OPD) layer and oxide thin-film transistor backplane. Using solution-processed organic bulk heterojunction photodiode rather than the usual amorphous silicon, process temperature is reduced to be compatible with plastic film substrates, and a number of costly lithography steps are eliminated, opening the door to lower production costs. With dark currents as low as 1 pA/mm $^{2}$ and sensitivity of 0.2 A/W the OPD also meets functional requirements: the proof-of-concept detector delivers high-resolution, dynamic images at 10 frames/s, and 200 pixels/in using X-ray doses as low as $3~\mu $ Gy/frame.

Abstract:X-ray photodetection are frequently used in medical diagnoses industrial inspection and environmental radiation detection. Currently, there is an ongoing effort to develop bendable or flexible x-ray photodetectors (PDs) to meet the demand on light weight and arbitrary shape detection system. Here, a highly bendable indirect x-ray PD is designed by coupling a P3HT:PC61BM organic photodetectors (OPDs) with a flexible perovskite quantum dots (QDs) embedded polymer scintillator. The flexible perovskite QDs scintillator exhibits high radioluminescence with emission peak centers at the 537 nm, which falls in maximum absorption range of poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT). The OPD, with 2 mu m active layer, exhibits low dark currents in the range of tens of nanoampere per square centimeter over a wide reversed biased range. The OPD demonstrates detectable light signal down to 0.1 mu W cm(-2) and low dose detection capability. The coupling of perovskite QDs scintillator and OPD shows a sensitivity of 638 e nGy(-1) mm(-2) (10.2 mu C Gy(-1 )cm(-2)) at a dose rate of 1 mGy s(-1), which brings the possibilities of realizing highly bendable x-ray PDs.
Design of Ultra‐Narrow Bandgap Polymer Acceptors for High‐Sensitivity Flexible All‐Polymer Short‐Wavelength Infrared Photodetectors

Abstract:All-polymer photodetectors possess unique mechanical flexibility and are ideally suitable for the application in next-generation flexible, wearable short-wavelength infrared (SWIR, 1000–2700 nm) photodetectors. However, all-polymer photodetectors commonly suffer from low sensitivity, high noise, and low photoresponse speed in the SWIR region, which significantly diminish their application potential in wearable electronics. Herein, two polymer acceptors with absorption beyond 1000 nm, namely P4TOC-DCBT and P4TOC-DCBSe, were designed and synthesized. The two polymers possess rigid structure and good conformational stability, which is beneficial for reducing energetic disorder and suppressing dark current. Owing to the efficient charge generation and ultralow noise current, the P4TOC-DCBT-based all-polymer photodetector achieved a specific detectivity () of over 1012 Jones from 650 (visible) to 1070 nm (SWIR) under zero bias, with a response time of 1.36 μs. These are the best results for reported all-polymer SWIR photodetectors in photovoltaic mode. More significantly, the all-polymer blend films exhibit good mechanical durability, and hence the P4TOC-DCBT-based flexible all-polymer photodetectors show a small performance attenuation (<4%) after 2000 cycles of bending to a 3 mm radius. The all-polymer flexible SWIR organic photodetectors are successfully applied in pulse signal detection, optical communication and image capture.

Abstract:High-performance short-wave infrared (SWIR) photodetectors (PDs) possess great potential in health monitoring, remote control, telecommunication, and medical diagnostics. In comparison with inorganic PDs, organic PDs (OPDs) stand out as good candidates for next-generation photodetection devices because of their ease of processing, tunable optoelectronic properties, lightweight, easy portability, and low-manufacturing cost. Herein, we reported two conjugated polymers with ultranarrow band gaps (0.6 eV) for photoconductor-mode SWIR OPDs, which exhibited broad and excellent photoresponse across the visible and IR regions as long as 1450 nm. Specifically, one of the polymers possessing longer exciton lifetimes and favorable morphology and molecular orientation was further applied for flexible OPDs, demonstrating excellent performance with the responsivity (R) and external quantum efficiency as high as 0.96 A/W and 106% at 1122 nm, respectively, comparable to those of 2D nanomaterial-based IR PDs. In addition, an image sensor composed of 16 × 16 flexible OPDs was constructed, which can detect spatial light intensity distribution (1342 nm) clearly. Abstract:X-ray detection is an important technology for medical diagnosis as well as industrial and security inspections. While today's commercial X-ray detectors are bulky, photodetectors based on organic semiconductors have attracted increasing attention owing to their low temperature processing capabilities, flexibility and low cost. Nonetheless, the low X-ray attenuation coefficient of organic semiconductors still hinders their practical application. Herein, a new organic-inorganic hybrid strategy is proposed to improve the X-ray sensitivity of organic photodetectors (OPDs). A solution-processed X-ray sensitive hybrid OPD is fabricated by embedding CsPbBr3 quantum dots (QDs) into a P3HT:PC61BM bulk heterojunction photodiode. The QDs, acting as embedded scintillators in the organic active layer, maintain a high radioluminescence. The proposed hybrid structure enables indirect X-ray detection in a comprehensive manner. These hybrid photodetectors exhibit suppressed dark current densities in the range of tens of picoamperes per square centimeters for different weight ratios of blended QDs. The best OPD achieves a sensitivity of 229.6 e nGy- 1 mm-2 (3.67 mu C Gy- 1 cm-2) and a dark current of 23.3 pA cm-2 at a low operating voltage (-3 V) for 20-80 kV "soft" X-rays, thus representing great potential for the development of next generation low cost, portable, and highly sensitive X-ray detectors.

Abstract:X-ray detectors are critical to healthcare diagnostics, cancer therapy and homeland security, with many potential uses limited by system cost and/or detector dimensions. Current X-ray detector sensitivities are limited by the bulk X-ray attenuation of the materials and consequently necessitate thick crystals (~1 mm–1 cm), resulting in rigid structures, high operational voltages and high cost. Here we present a disruptive, flexible, low cost, broadband, and high sensitivity direct X-ray transduction technology produced by embedding high atomic number bismuth oxide nanoparticles in an organic bulk heterojunction. These hybrid detectors demonstrate sensitivities of 1712 µC mGy−1 cm−3 for “soft” X-rays and ~30 and 58 µC mGy−1 cm−3 under 6 and 15 MV “hard” X-rays generated from a medical linear accelerator; strongly competing with the current solid state detectors, all achieved at low bias voltages (−10 V) and low power, enabling detector operation powered by coin cell batteries.

Abstract:Low-cost, deformable visible-near-infrared (visible-NIR) photodetectors can be configured into non-planar shapes to meet emerging optical needs. However, it remains challenging to develop low-cost flexible visible-NIR photosensor with excellent mechanical deformability and high optical detectivity. Herein, we report a flexible visible-NIR organic photodetector (OPD) based on a blend film of D18:BTP-4F as the active layer on a polyethylene naphthalate substrate. Owing to the low exciton binding energy of BTP-4F and the preferred orientation of the D18:BTP-4F film, the as-fabricated OPD exhibits excellent self-powered optoelectronic performances with a high responsivity, high detectivity, and fast response time of 206 mA W-1, 6.45 x 10(12) Jones (1 Jones = 1 cm Hz(1/2) W-1), and 9 mu s at the wavelength of 800 nm and bias voltage of 0 V, respectively. After 1000 bending/releasing cycles with an angle of 150 degrees at a radius of curvature of 3 mm, the current-voltage curves remain stable both measured under dark and light illumination, indicating obvious device operation robustness. The reliable linear photosensitivity of the as-obtained OPD is demonstrated by the photoresponse under a range of different incident light intensities and its practical application for wearable health monitoring such as heart rate measurement is well demonstrated. Furthermore, a flexible visible-NIR image sensor for imaging acquisition is shown by demonstrating 5 x 5 OPD array under 850 nm light irradiation. The collective results on blend film design, flexible device fabrication and characterization, and imager development shed light on sought-after visible-NIR photosensing and imaging systems.

Abstract:In this paper, we report our experimental design in searching a smart and easy-to-read dosimeter used to detect 6 MV X-rays for improving patient safety in radiation oncology. The device was based on an organic emissive solutions of poly(2-methoxy-5(2'-ethylhexyloxy)-p-phenylenevinylene) (MEH-PPV), aluminum-tris-(8-hydroxyquinoline) (Alq₃) and additive components which were characterized by UV-Vis absorption, photoluminescence and CIE color coordinate diagram. The optical properties of MEH-PPV/Alq₃ solutions have been examined as function of radiation dose over the range of 0-100 Gy. It has shown that MEH-PPV/Alq₃ solutions are specifically sensitive to X-rays, since the effect of radiation on this organic system is strongly correlated with the efficient spectral overlap between Alq₃ emission and the absorption of degraded MEH-PPV, which alters the color and photoemission of MEH-PPV/Alq₃ mixtures from red to yellow, and then to green. The rate of this change is more sensitive when MEH-PPV/Alq₃ is irradiated in the presence of benzoyl peroxide than when in the presence of hindered phenolic stabilizers, respectively, an accelerator and an inhibitor to activate or inhibit free radical formation. This gives rise to optimize the response curve of the dosimeter. It is clear from the experimental results that organic emissive semiconductors have potential to be used as dedicated and low-cost dosimeters to provide an independent check of beam output of a linear accelerator and therefore to give patients the opportunity to have information on the dose prescription or equipment-related problems a few minutes before being exposed to radiation.
