Abstract:Hierarchical porous adsorbent with well-defined macro-pores and interconnected meso- and micro-pores provides better accessibility and active sites for adsorbate. However, most synthesis techniques usually require multiple steps, or based on surfactants and block-copolymers as soft templates, which are time consuming, costly and non-renewable. Herein, we demonstrated a novel strategy to fabricate a highly interconnected hierarchical 3D porous composite adsorbent chitosan-g-poly(acrylamide)/attapulgite (CTS-g-PAM/APT) with tunable pore size via one-step Pickering emulsion polymerization without any surfactant. Stable, low-cost and environment-friendly canola oil-in-water (O/W) Pickering medium internal phase emulsions (MIPEs) was solely stabilized by a pH-responsive APT/CTS composite particle derived from the electrostatic assembly of non-toxic natural APT nanorods and biopolymer CTS. Then, the acrylamide (AM) monomers in Pickering MIPEs were in-situ polymerized to produce CTS-g-PAM/APT composite with hierarchical and interconnected pores. The size of pore can be regulated by varying the pH values due to the pH-dependent of droplet size of emulsion. The composite has large amounts of chelating groups (e.g., –NH2 and –COO−) and high porosity, so it was capable of capturing Rb+ and Cs+ with high adsorption capacities of 178.88 mg/g and 221.56 mg/g, and rapid adsorption rate of 600 and 900 s for Rb+ and Cs+, respectively. Moreover, the composite can be regenerated and reused for multiple cycles. This new approach provided a potential and economical pathway to develop hierarchically porous materials for wastewater treatment.

Abstract:To simultaneously remove Sr and Cs from a simulated highly active liquid waste, a new ternary solid-state supramolecular adsorbent BnPC6DTXAD-7 (BnPDTX7), based on organic chelating agents 25,27-bis(1-n-propoxy)-calix[4]26,28-crown-6 (BnPC6), 4,4'(5')-di-tert-butyldicyclohexano-18-crown-6 (DT), and polymeric carrier XAD-7 was prepared for the first time. Scanning electronic microscopy and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller analysis demonstrated that BnPDTX7 is a macroporous adsorbent. The adsorption of 20 metals onto BnPDTX7 were studied. Under the optimal adsorption conditions of 3.0 M HNO3, 298 K, and contact time of 60 min, the adsorption capacity toward Cs and Sr were 0.1396 mM/g and 0.1289 mM/g, respectively. The experimental data fit well with the Langmuir model, indicative of the monolayer adsorption mechanism. The thermodynamic parameters, Delta H degrees, Delta G degrees, and Delta S degrees of Cs and Sr adsorption and other valuable chemical engineering data were obtained. BnPDTX7 proves to be a promising adsorbent for the simultaneous removal of Sr and Cs because of its high selectivity, fast kinetics, and high stability.

Abstract:A novel macroporous polymer-based 25,27-bis(iso-propyloxy)calix[4]arene-26,28-crown-6 (BiPCalix[4]C6) supramolecular recognition material, BiPCalix[4]C6/XAD-7, was synthesized. It was performed by vacuum impregnation and immobilization of BiPCalix[4] C6 into the pores of the macroporous XAD-7 particles. The composition and structure were characterized using SEM, BET, TG-DSC, FT-IR, and XRD, respectively. The adsorption of some typical metals contained in highly active liquid waste (HLW) such as Ru(III), Mo(VI), K(I), Rb(I), Cs(I), Sr(II), Ba(II), La(III), and Y(III) onto the BiPCalix[4]C6/XAD-7 materials was investigated. The effects of the HNO3 concentration and contact time on the adsorption of the tested metals were evaluated. It was found that at the optimum concentration of 4.0 M HNO3, BiPCalix[4]C6/XAD-7 exhibited excellent adsorption ability and high selectivity for Cs(I) over all the other tested metals, which showed weak or almost no adsorption except Rb(I). It demonstrated that application of the polymer-based supramolecular recognition material, BiPCalix[4]C6/XAD-7, in partitioning of Cs(I) from HLW is promising.

Abstract:4,4′,(5′)-Di-(tert-butylcyclohexano)-18-crown-6(DtBuCH18C6) is a chelating agent having high selectivity mostly for Sr(II). To significantly reduce its leakage by molecular modification, a macroporous silica-based DtBuCH18C6 polymeric composite (DtDo/SiO2–P) was synthesized. It was performed by impregnating and immobilizing DtBuCH18C6 and 1-dodecanol molecules into the pores of the SiO2–P particles utilizing an advanced vacuum sucking technique. The adsorption of a few fission and non-fission products Sr(II), Ba(II), Cs(I), Ru(III), Mo(VI), Na(I), K(I), Pd(II), La(III), and Y(III) onto DtDo/SiO2–P was investigated. It was done by examining the effects of contact time and the HNO3 concentration in a range of 0.1–5.0M at 298K. At the optimum concentration of 2.0M HNO3, DtDo/SiO2–P exhibited strong adsorption ability and high selectivity for Sr(II) great over all of the tested elements, which showed very weak or almost no adsorption except Ba(II). Meanwhile, It was found that the quantity of total organic carbon (TOC) leaked from DtDo/SiO2–P in 2.0M HNO3, 187.5ppm, was lower than 658.4ppm that leaked from DtBuCH18C6/SiO2–P, which was not modified. This was ascribed to the effective association of DtBuCH18C6 and 1-dodecanol through intermolecular interaction. The reduction of DtBuCH18C6 leakage by molecular modification with 1-dodecanol was achieved. It was of great benefit to application of DtDo/SiO2–P in chromatographic partitioning of Sr(II), one of the main heat generators, from high level liquid waste (HLLW) in reprocessing of nuclear spent fuel in the MAREC (Minor Actinides Recovery from HLLW by Extraction Chromatography) process developed recently.

Abstract:A fresh adsorbent nanostructured chitosan/molecular sieve 4A hybrid (NSC@MS-4A) was fabricated for the rapid adsorption of strontium (Sr2+) and cesium (Cs+) ions from aqueous solutions. The as-obtained NSC@MS-4A were thoroughly characterized by XRD, FE-SEM, EDS, BET, XPS and FT-IR. The physio-chemical properties and structural aspects revealed that NSC@MS-4A acquires fine surface area (72 m2/g), porous structure as well as compatible functional groups (-P-O-P and -C-O-C) for the admission of Cs+ and Sr2+ ions. The batch adsorption studies concluded that prepared adsorbent displayed a maximum adsorption of 92-94 % within 40 min. Fast adsorption of Cs+ and Sr2+ was achieved at neutral pH (6-7), ambient temperature (25-30 °C) and slow agitation speed (50-60 rpm) which could propose vast benefits such as little power utilization and uncomplicated operation. Among six types of adsorption isotherms, Freundlich isotherm showed the best fit with R2>0.997. Pseudo-second order made a better agreement as compare to other kinetic models. The thermodynamic coefficients suggested the passage of Cs+ and Sr2+ ions through the liquid solid boundary is exothermic and spontaneous. The NSC@MS-4A displayed excellent regenerability properties over five repetitive adsorption/desorption cycles, which specified that as-obtained NSC@MS-4A is a sustainable as well as efficient adsorbent for practical decontamination of radioactive liquid waste.

Abstract:Spherical porous materials prepared from the emulsion template used in the water treatment have displayed a vast prospect, as the high surface area, abundant porous structure, convenient operation and excellent adsorption performance. But the tedious fabrication process, high consumption of organic solvent and surfactant limited the application widely. Herein, a facile and eco-friendly spherical porous adsorbent (SPA) is fabricated from the green surfactant-free (corn oil)-in-water Pickering medium internal phase emulsions (Pickering MIPEs) via the convenient ion crosslinking procedure. The Pickering MIPEs synergistically stabilized with the semi-coke (SC), which is the natural particle produced from the shale oil distillation, and sodium alginate (SA) has excellent storage and anti-coalescence stability. The as-prepared porous adsorbent possessed the abundant pore structure, which provided favorable conditions for effective mass transfer in adsorption, and could be tuned by varying the SA dosage. The saturation adsorption capacities of Pb(II) and Cd(II) can be achieved with 460.54 and 278.77 mg/g within 45 min at 25°C, respectively. Overall, this study supplied a viable and eco-friendly route for fabricating the spherical porous adsorbent with a tunable porous structure for heavy metal ion wastewater.

Abstract:The operation of the nuclear industry generates a great deal of radionuclides-containing low-level radioactive wastewater (LLRW). The development of new adsorbents and techniques for radionuclides separation from LLRW will be of great significance for environmental safety and sustainable development of nuclear energy. Electro-adsorption is a potential technique for the separation of radionuclides, but the simultaneous recovery of multiple radionuclides by electro-adsorption have not been reported before. Here, a novel approach was reported for the simultaneous electro-adsorption of strontium (Sr 2+ ), cesium (Cs + ), uranium (UO 2 (CO 3 ) 2 2– ) and rhenium (ReO 4 − ) (the non-radioactive surrogate of technetium) from LLRW by chitosan-based asymmetric electrodes. The UO 2 (CO 3 ) 2 2– /ReO 4 − co-imprinted chitosan hydrochloride (URIC) and Sr 2+ /Cs + co-imprinted chitosan (SCIC) prepared by co-imprinting technique were loaded on the surface of carbon clothes and used as asymmetric electrodes. The maximum electro-adsorption capacities of URIC for U(VI) and Re(VII) were 427.4 mg and 531.9 mg/g and the maximum adsorption capacities of SCIC for Sr(II) and Cs(I) were 254.5 mg and 231.5 mg/g at the potential of 1.2 V, which were at least 3.7 times higher than the values obtained without potential. The electro-adsorption for all these ions conformed to pseudo-second-order kinetics and the adsorption equilibrium can be reached within 30 min at pH 8.0 and 298.15 K, which were more than twice faster than physicochemical adsorption. The electrodes revealed better selectivity for these four target ions against other competing ions in comparison with non-imprinted chitosan functionalized electrodes. Furthermore, the electrodes showed conspicuous salt resistance in simulative LLRW with high ionic strength (1 mol/L NaCl) and high removal efficiencies can be retained after five adsorption and desorption cycles. XPS studies revealed that UO 2 (CO 3 ) 2 2– and ReO 4 − anions were bound to URIC mainly through electrostatic interaction, while Sr 2+ /Cs + were bound to SCIC by complexation interaction between Sr 2+ /Cs + and –NH 2 /–OH on the backbone of chitosan. This work reports an innovative approach for the simultaneously selective electro-adsorption of multiple radionuclides from LLRW assisted by co-imprinting technology, which can be popularized to the simultaneous separation of other charged contaminants efficiently, thus achieving deep purification of wastewater.

Abstract:Adsorption is a popular water treatment technique that encounters several challenges in practical applications, such as rapidly achieved adsorption equilibrium and selective recovery. In this work, a quaternary-ammonium-salt modified chitosan adsorbent with porous structure (porous CS-CTA) was obtained conveniently by removing embedded inorganic nanoparticles from a previously well-prepared chitosan-based magnetic composite adsorbent (CS-CTA-MCM). Compared with CS-CTA-MCM and CS-CTA without porous structures, porous CS-CTA shows clearly improved and rapid adsorption of both methyl orange and chromium [Cr(VI)] from water because of its larger specific surface area. It also presents significantly enhanced selective adsorption of methyl orange over Cr(VI) in their aqueous mixture at neutral and alkaline conditions, an outcome that is ascribed to the stronger affinity of methyl orange to porous CS-CTA compared with that of Cr(VI). The porous microstructure of CS-CTA results in its higher adsorption efficiency in the removal of those two pollutants in comparison with the other adsorbents.
The adsorption of cesium by sulfonic acid functionalized hollow mesoporous silica microspheres

Abstract:With the development of nuclear industry, radioactive elements such as 137Cs put a threat on the water environment. It is a challenging task to remove the Cs+ in the nuclear wastewater. In the current study, we prepared a new Cs+-adsorbing material by introducing sulfhydryl group onto the surface of hollow mesoporous silica microspheres, then oxidizing the sulfhydryl group to sulfonic acid group. The obtained HMSS-SO3H material had an excellent adsorption capacity for Cs+ in the aqueous solution, with an adsorption capacity of 51.53 mg g-1 in 30 min. Characterization approaches, such as FT-IR and EDS, were used to confirm the result of modification. Adsorption experiments were carried out under. The influence of various parameters on the adsorption process was investigated under the conditions of changing pH, temperature, and time. The effect of competitive ions was also explored. The results indicated that the adsorption process followed the pseudo-second-order model and the main adsorption mechanisms are electrostatic interaction and coordination. The material had a best adsorption performance at a neutral pH. The adsorption process could well-fit the Langmuir's model, with a theoretical maximum adsorption capacity of 81.31 mg g-1. And the adsorption capacity was slightly affected by competing ions such as Mg2+ and Ca2+. The results indicate that the HMSS-SO3H prepared in this study is a promising adsorbent for Cs+, with the advantages of high adsorption capacity, fast adsorption rate and high selectivity.
Well-designed chitosan-based cationic porous polymer: A robust material for effective adsorption of endocrine disrupting chemicals

Abstract:There is an immediate need for meticulous design of easily accessible, cost-effective, chemically stable and eco-friendly materials for effectively removal of water contaminant. Herein, targeting typical water contaminants, endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs), three cationic hyper-cross-linked porous polymers (ciHCP-1, ciHCP-2, ciHCP-3) with multiple adsorption sites were designed with 2-hydroxypropyltrimethyl ammonium chloride chitosan (HACC) as precursor. The ciHCP-3 with large surface area (806 m2 g-1) exhibited high sorption capacity (137-366 mg g-1), and fast adsorption kinetics (5 min) for the EDCs, which is superior to the reported sorbents. The adsorption mechanisms can be attributed to the synergistic effect of physisorption and chemisorption. The high preparation reproducibility, physicochemical stability, and reuse capability of ciHCP highlights its great potential in practical water remediation applications.
Ion-imprinted chitosan without cross-linking agent for efficient selective adsorption of Al(III) from rare earth solution

Abstract:In the aqueous phase, Ion-imprinted materials exhibited excellent selective adsorption properties for specific ions, but their complicated preparation process and large amount of crosslinker consumption limited their application. Herein, reparation of Ion-imprinted chitosan (IIP-CS) by a simple one-step hydrothermal method without cross-linking agent for the efficient adsorption of trace amounts Al(III) from rare earth solution. The structures and morphology of IIP-CS were analyzed by FT-IR, SEM, and XRD. The Al(III) adsorption characteristics of IIP-CS were investigated in various preparation processes and adsorption conditions. It was found that the optimum mass ratio of IIP-CS was 3:1 and pH was 3; the adsorption capacity was up to 40. 36 mg/g. In addition, three different isothermal models of Temkin, Freundlich, and Langmuir were used to analyze its equilibrium adsorption in aqueous solution, and the results obtained were consistent with the Langmuir model. The adsorption process of Al(III) on IIP-CS followed a pseudo-secondary kinetic model, and it was hypothesized that the electron sharing or exchange between IIP-CS and Al(III) was the key factor affecting its adsorption rate. IIP-CS showed high selectivity coefficients to Al(III) in mixtures of La(III), Y(III) and Gd(III) were 792.50, 163.26, and 55.16, respectively. The mechanism of action was the formation of a complex by amidation between Al (III) and IIP-CS. IIP-CS was an adsorbent with excellent regeneration and selective adsorption performance in aqueous solution.

Abstract:Recently it has been demonstrated that long-term administration of GH leads to increase of skin thickness. The aim of the present study was to determine whether this effect of GH is mediated by insulin growth factor 1 (IGF-1), which enhances epidermal proliferation. In order to address this question, human split-thickness grafts obtained from aged skin were grafted onto nude mice. One group of mice was treated systemically with GH, whereas a second group was treated with intradermal graft injections of anti-IGF-1 in addition to GH. A third group received distilled water and served as a control group. Histological and autoradiographic analyses were performed before and after engraftment. The GH-treated mice showed a significant increase in epidermal proliferation measured by epidermal thickness (analysis of variance with repeated measurements, P < 0.01) and labeled index (analysis of variance, P < 0.01) as compared to the control group. The intradermal injections of anti-IGF-1 reduced significantly the proliferative stimulatory effect of GH (P < 0.01). The present study emphasizes the role of IGF-1 in the increased skin thickness observed after GH administration and provides a useful model for determining the effect of various compounds, including GH, on human skin.

Abstract:The ammonium molybdophosphate (AMP) with excellent ability of separation and extraction for radioisotope 137Cs and Cs+ in saline has a high solubility in water, which avoids its adsorbent role to extract Cs+ from enhydrous solutions directly. In our paper, the copolymers as the carrier of AMP are prepared via RAFT (reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer) polymerization, and the AMP is covalently located in shell or core of self-assembled copolymer micelles for efficient Cs+ adsorption. The influence of the initial concentration of Cs+, the pH value and the dosage of adsorbents, and the adsorption performance of Cs+ is evaluated. The initial concentration of Cs+ has little effect on the adsorption effect, and the optimal pH of the solution is 7.0. The adsorption–desorption cycles indicate that the micelles have excellent stability and capability for regeneration. The adsorption process of Cs+ follows the quasi-second-order kinetic model, and the adsorption equilibrium is reached within 3 h. And the equilibrium adsorption capacities are 8.49 mg/g (AMP in shell of micelle) and 9.34 mg/g (AMP in core of micelle), respectively. According to the Langmuir adsorption model, the maximum adsorption capacity of Cs+ on micelles is 71.79 mg/g and 164.20 mg/g, respectively, and the adsorption process is single-layer adsorption. The principle of Cs+ selective adsorption is the Cs+ and NH4+ exchange reaction in the gaps of the AMP. The results show that micelle with AMP loaded in shell is considered to be the more suitable adsorbent for separating and extracting Cs+.

Abstract:In this study, a novel fibrous chitosan biosorbent was prepared using LiOH/KOH/urea/H2O (4.5:7:8:80.5 by weight) as spinning solvent. The fibrous chitosan exhibited a higher adsorption capacity and a faster adsorption rate for Co2+ and Sr2+, compared with spherical chitosan due to its high specific surface area (16.9 m2 g-1), uniform fineness (24.1 μm), and good mechanical strength. The adsorption capacity of fibrous chitosan for Co2+ and Sr2+ was 31.3 mg g-1 and 20.0 mg g-1, respectively, which was higher than that of spherical chitosan (22.5 mg g-1for Co2+ and 8.9 mg g-1 for Sr2+). The coordination between -NH2/-OH of chitosan and the nuclide ions was the rate-limiting step. The improvement of adsorption performance was due to the higher specific surface area which increased the exposure degree of functional groups (adsorptive sites). This new wet-spun fibrous chitosan biosorbent showed great potential in the adsorptive removal of nuclides ions from aqueous solution.

However, the high usage of poisonous organic solvent in HIPEs not only greatly increases the cost but also is harmful to human health and environment, which leads to limited large-scale applications. In this study, we prepared a novel monolithic macroporous material of carboxymethyl cellulose-g-poly(acrylamide)/montmorillonite (CMC-g-PAM/MMT) by the free radical polymerization via oil-in-water Pickering medium internal phase emulsions (Pickering MIPEs), which used the non-toxic and eco-friendly flaxseed oil as continuous phase, MMT, and Tween-20 (T-20) as stabilizer. The pore structure of the resulting macroporous materials could be tuned easily by adjusting the content of MMT, co-surfactant T-20, and the oil phase volume fraction. The maximal adsorption capacities of the prepared macroporous material for Pb2+ and Cd2+ were 456.05 and 278.11 mg/g, respectively, and the adsorption equilibrium can be reached within 30 min. Otherwise, the macroporous monolith exhibited excellent reusability through five adsorption–desorption cycles. Thus, the eco-friendly Pickering-MIPEs is a potential alternative method to be used to fabricate multi-porous adsorption materials for environmental applications.

Abstract:Wastewater containing highly toxic and non-biodegradable heavy metals and organic dyes poses a serious threat to ecological environment and human health. Adsorption has been regarded as a promising technology to purify this kind of wastewater. Therefore, it is of great importance to develop efficient adsorbents. Herein, a magnetically recyclable adsorbent Fe3O4-CS/PDAC was facilely fabricated by coating poly(acryloyloxyethyltrimethyl ammonium chloride)-modified chitosan on the surface of Fe3O4 nanoparticles. The morphology, physical-chemical and magnetic properties of as-prepared Fe3O4-CS/PDAC was fully characterized by various techniques. Its adsorption behaviors towards heavy metal Cr(VI) and organic dye sunset yellow (SY) were systematically investigated. Evidently, Fe3O4-CS/PDAC exhibited adsorption capacities of 163.93 and 769.23 mg/g for Cr(VI) and SY respectively, much higher than other reported adsorbents. Besides, batch experiment results showed that adsorption capacities decreased slightly with pH increasing from 2.0 to 10.0. Furthermore, Fe3O4-CS/PDAC could be easily separated and effectively regenerated after adsorption. The superior adsorption performance of Fe3O4-CS/PDAC could be attributed to the electrostatic interaction and ion exchange between target pollutants and the grafted cationic polymer. Owing to its high adsorption capacity over a wide pH range, rapid separation, easy regeneration and good reusability, Fe3O4-CS/PDAC has great potential for practical application in water treatment.

Abstract:Recently, biomass-based materials have attracted increasing attention because of their advantages of low cost, environment-friendly and nonpollution. Herein, the feasibility of using corn stalk biomass fiber (CF) and Fe3O4 embedded chitosan (CS) as a novel biomass-based adsorbent (CFS) to remove chloramphenicol (CAPC) from aqueous solution. Structure of CFS was characterized by using X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and zeta potential techniques. The effects of solution pH, adsorption time and ion strength on the adsorption capacity were examined. Adsorption isotherms obtained from batch experiments were better fitted by Langmuir model compared with Freundlich model, Dubinin–Radushkevich model and Temkin model. Adsorption kinetic data matched well to the pseudo-second order kinetic model. CAPC adsorption was endothermic, spontaneous, and entropy-increasing nature on CFS. In addition, the CFS could be separated by an external magnetic field, recycled, and reused without any significant loss in the adsorption capacity of CAPC. Based on these excellent performances, there is potential that CFS can be considered as a proficient and economically suitable material for the CAPC removal from the water environment.

Abstract:To develop recyclable adsorptive materials for high-efficient separation of cesium (Cs+) from aqueous salt lake brine is of great significance. Herein, a novel polyimide (PI-18C6) with high molecular weight (Mn = 93 kDa) and high thermal stability (Td > 380 °C) was synthesized by the condensation and polymerization of di(aminobenzo)-18-crown-6 (DAB18C6) and 4,4′- (hexafluoro-isopropylidene) diphthalic anhydride. Simultaneously, porous membranes for Cs+ selective adsorption were prepared by non-solvent induced phase separation (NIPs) method. Results suggested that the adsorption of Cs+ on PI-18C6 membrane is the monolayer chemical adsorption as confirmed by fitting its adsorption data using pseudo-second-order adsorption model and Langmuir isotherm model, respectively. PI-18C6 membranes displayed a high adsorption capacity up to 54.08 mg g−1 combined with a higher selectivity of coexisting ions such as K+, Na+, Mg2+ and Rb+. Theoretical calculation results showed that the PI-18C6 has a higher adsorption energy for Cs+ (-395.72 kJ mol−1) than K+ and Rb+. The significant higher adsorption energy at the crown-ether sites is largely attributed to the fact that the cavity diameter cavity of DB18C6 (2.6–3.2 Å) is a closer to Cs+ (3.34 Å). The membrane also exhibited excellent repeatability. In summary, our study paves a facile way to develop functional membrane materials for the selective adsorption separation of Cs+ from aqueous solution.
