Abstract:Abstract The injection of directional currents in solids with strong optical fields has attracted tremendous attention as a route to realize ultrafast electronics based on the quantum-mechanical nature of electrons at femto- to attosecond timescales. Such currents are usually the result of an asymmetric population distribution imprinted by the temporal symmetry of the driving field. Here we compare two experimental schemes that allow control over the amplitude and direction of light-field-driven currents excited in graphene. Both schemes rely on shaping the incident laser field with one parameter only: either the carrier-envelope phase (CEP) of a single laser pulse or the relative phase between pulses oscillating at angular frequencies ω and 2 ω , both for comparable laser parameters. We observe that the efficiency in generating a current via two-color-control exceeds that of CEP control by more than two orders of magnitude (7 nA vs. 18 pA), as the ω + 2 ω field exhibits significantly more asymmetry in its temporal shape. We support this finding with numerical simulations that clearly show that two-color current control in graphene is superior, even down to single-cycle pulse durations. We expect our results to be relevant to experimentally access fundamental properties of any solid at ultrafast timescales, as well as for the emerging field of petahertz electronics.

Abstract:Abstract The motion of atoms is at the heart of any chemical or structural transformation in molecules and materials. Upon activation of this motion by an external source, several (usually many) vibrational modes can be coherently coupled, thus facilitating the chemical or structural phase transformation. These coherent dynamics occur on the ultrafast timescale, as revealed, e.g., by nonlocal ultrafast vibrational spectroscopic measurements in bulk molecular ensembles and solids. Tracking and controlling vibrational coherences locally at the atomic and molecular scales is, however, much more challenging and in fact has remained elusive so far. Here, we demonstrate that the vibrational coherences induced by broadband laser pulses on a single graphene nanoribbon (GNR) can be probed by femtosecond coherent anti-Stokes Raman spectroscopy (CARS) when performed in a scanning tunnelling microscope (STM). In addition to determining dephasing (~440 fs) and population decay times (~1.8 ps) of the generated phonon wave packets, we are able to track and control the corresponding quantum coherences, which we show to evolve on time scales as short as ~70 fs. We demonstrate that a two-dimensional frequency correlation spectrum unequivocally reveals the quantum couplings between different phonon modes in the GNR.

Optical Control of Ultrafast Photocurrent in Graphene

Abstract:The ability to manipulate electrons with the intense laser pulse enables an unprecedented control over the electronic motion on its intrinsic timescale. Present work explores the desired control of photocurrent generation in monolayer graphene on ultrafast timescale. The origin of photocurrent is attributed to the asymmetric residual electronic population in the conduction band after the end of the laser pulse, which also facilitates valley polarization. Present study offers a comprehensive analysis of the differences between these two observables, namely photocurrent and valley polarization. It is found that the corotating circularly polarized $\omega-2\omega$ laser pulses allow the generation of photocurrent but no valley polarization, whereas counterrotating circularly polarized $\omega-2\omega$ laser pulses yield significant valley polarization without any photocurrent in graphene. Different laser parameters, such as subcycle phase, wavelength, and intensity provide different knobs to control the generation of the photocurrent. In addition, threefold increase in the photocurrent's amplitude can be achieved by altering electronic properties of graphene via strain engineering. Our findings reveal intriguing underlying mechanisms into the interplay between the symmetries of the graphene's electronic structure and the driving laser pulses, shedding light on the potential for harnessing graphene's properties for novel applications in ultrafast photonics, optoelectronic devices, and quantum technologies.

High-Harmonic Spectroscopy of Coherent Lattice Dynamics in Graphene

Abstract:High-harmonic spectroscopy of solids is a powerful tool, which provides access to both electronic structure and ultrafast electronic response of solids, from their band structure and density of states, to phase transitions, including the emergence of the topological edge states, to the PetaHertz electronic response. However, in spite of these successes, high harmonic spectroscopy has hardly been applied to analyse the role of coherent femtosecond lattice vibrations in the attosecond electronic response. Here we study coherent phonon excitations in monolayer graphene to show how high-harmonic spectroscopy can be used to detect the influence of coherent lattice dynamics, particularly longitudinal and transverse optical phonon modes, on the electronic response. Coherent excitation of the in-plane phonon modes results in the appearance of sidebands in the spectrum of the emitted harmonic radiation. We show that the spectral positions and the polarisation of the sideband emission offer a sensitive probe of the dynamical symmetries associated with the excited phonon modes. Our work brings the key advantage of high harmonic spectroscopy -- the combination of sub-femtosecond to tens of femtoseconds temporal resolution -- to the problem of probing phonon-driven electronic response and its dependence on the dynamical symmetries in solids.

Coherent Charge Oscillations in a Bilayer Graphene Double Quantum Dot

Abstract:The coherent dynamics of a quantum mechanical two-level system passing through an anti-crossing of two energy levels can give rise to Landau-Zener-Stückelberg-Majorana (LZSM) interference. LZSM interference spectroscopy has proven to be a fruitful tool to investigate charge noise and charge decoherence in semiconductor quantum dots (QDs). Recently, bilayer graphene has developed as a promising platform to host highly tunable QDs potentially useful for hosting spin and valley qubits. So far, in this system no coherent oscillations have been observed and little is known about charge noise in this material. Here, we report coherent charge oscillations and $T_2^*$ charge decoherence times in a bilayer graphene double QD. The charge decoherence times are measured independently using LZSM interference and photon assisted tunneling. Both techniques yield $T_2^*$ average values in the range of 400 to 500 ps. The observation of charge coherence allows to study the origin and spectral distribution of charge noise in future experiments.

Time-dependent Quantum Monte Carlo Simulation of Electron Devices with Two-Dimensional Dirac Materials: A Genuine Terahertz Signature for Graphene

Abstract:An intrinsic electron injection model for two-dimensional (2D) Dirac materials, like graphene, is presented and its coupling to a recently developed quantum time-dependent Monte Carlo simulator for electron devices, based on the use of stochastic Bohmian conditional wave functions, is explained. The simulator is able to capture the full (dc,ac,transient, and noise) performance of 2D electron devices. In particular, we demonstrate that the injection of electrons with positive and negative kinetic energies is mandatory when investigating high-frequency performance of Dirac materials with Klein tunneling, while traditional models dealing with holes (defined as the lack of electrons) can lead to unphysical results. We show that the number of injected electrons is bias dependent, implying that an extra charge is required to get self-consistent results. Interestingly, we provide a successful comparison with experimental dc data. Finally, we predict that a genuine high-frequency signature due to a roughly constant electron injection rate in 2D linear band electron devices (which is missing in 2D parabolic band ones) can be used as a band structure tester.

Abstract:In the last decade, graphene has become an exciting platform for electron optical experiments, in many aspects superior to conventional two-dimensional electron gases (2DEGs). A major advantage, besides the ultra-large mobilities, is the fine control over the electrostatics, which gives the possibility of realising gap-less and compact p-n interfaces with high precision. The latter host non-trivial states, \eg, snake states in moderate magnetic fields, and serve as building blocks of complex electron interferometers. Thanks to the Dirac spectrum and its non-trivial Berry phase, the internal (valley and sublattice) degrees of freedom, and the possibility to tailor the band structure using proximity effects, such interferometers open up a completely new playground based on novel device architectures. In this review, we introduce the theoretical background of graphene electron optics, fabrication methods used to realise electron-optical devices, and techniques for corresponding numerical simulations. Based on this, we give a comprehensive review of ballistic transport experiments and simple building blocks of electron optical devices both in single and bilayer graphene, highlighting the novel physics that is brought in compared to conventional 2DEGs. After describing the different magnetic field regimes in graphene p-n junctions and nanostructures, we conclude by discussing the state of the art in graphene-based Mach-Zender and Fabry-Perot interferometers.

Coherent Spin Control of Single Molecules on a Surface

Abstract:Control of single electron spins constitutes one of the most promising platforms for spintronics, quantum sensing, and quantum information processing. Utilizing single molecular magnets as their hosts establishes an interesting framework since their molecular structure is highly flexible and chemistry-based large-scale synthesis directly provides a way toward scalability. Here, we demonstrate coherent spin manipulation of single molecules on a surface, which we control individually using a scanning tunneling microscope in combination with electron spin resonance. We previously found that iron phthalocyanine (FePc) molecules form a spin-1/2 system when placed on an insulating thin film of magnesium oxide (MgO). Performing Rabi oscillation and Hahn echo measurements, we show that the FePc spin can be coherently manipulated with a phase coherence time T2Echo of several hundreds of nanoseconds. Tunneling current-dependent measurements demonstrate that interaction with the tunneling electrons is the dominating source of decoherence. In addition, we perform Hahn echo measurements on small self-assembled arrays of FePc molecules. We show that, despite additional intermolecular magnetic coupling, spin resonance and T2Echo are much less perturbed by T1 spin flip events of neighboring spins than by the tunneling current. This will potentially allow for individual addressable molecular spins in self-assemblies and with application for quantum information processing.

Abstract:The interplays between different quasiparticles in solids lay the foundation for a wide spectrum of intriguing quantum effects, yet how the collective plasmon excitations affect the quantum transport of electrons remains largely unexplored. Here we provide the first demonstration that when the electronplasmon coupling is introduced, the quantum coherence of electrons in graphene is substantially enhanced with the quantum coherence length almost tripled. We further develop a microscopic model to interpret the striking observations, emphasizing the vital role of the graphene plasmons in suppressing electron-electron dephasing. The novel and transformative concept of plasmon-enhanced quantum coherence sheds new insight into interquasiparticle interactions, and further extends a new dimension to exploit nontrivial quantum phenomena and devices in solid systems.
Coherent control of photoconductivity in graphene nanoribbons

Abstract:We study the photoconductivity response of graphene nanoribbons with armchair edges in the presence of dissipation using a Lindblad-von Neumann master equation formalism. We propose to control the transport properties by illuminating the system with light that is linearly polarized along the finite direction of the nanoribbon while probing along the extended direction. We demonstrate that the largest steady-state photocurrent occurs for a driving frequency that is slightly blue-detuned to the electronic band gap proportional to the width of the nanoribbon. We compare the photoconductivity in the presence of coherent and incoherent light and conclude that the enhancement of the photoconductivity for blue-detuned driving relies on the coherence of the driving term. Based on this result we propose a switching protocol for fast control of the photocurrent on a time scale of a few picoseconds. Furthermore, we suggest a design for a heterostructure of a graphene nanoribbon and a high-Tc superconductor, that is operated as a transistor as a step towards next-generation coherent electronics.

Attomicroscopy imaging and control of electron motion in graphene

Abstract:Attosecond science has leveraged the highly nonlinear interactions between intense few-cycle laser pulses and matter, allowing for unprecedented observation and control of electron motion with remarkable temporal resolution. However, most existing experiments focusing on laser-controlled attosecond dynamics have dealt with quasi-bound electrons released in the ionization continua of atoms, molecules, or conduction bands in solid-state systems. Here, we employed the recently developed attomicroscopy imaging tool to investigate, visualize, and manipulate the motion of bound electrons in graphene. By adjusting the carrier-envelope phase and the field strength of the driving electric field, we were able to control both the amplitude and direction of the field-induced electron current between carbon atoms in graphene. This research opens new avenues for understanding and controlling dynamic, on-demand electron motion processes, including chemical reactions, molecular bonding, and the electronic properties of materials.

Abstract:Coherent optical manipulation of electronic bandstructures via Floquet Engineering is a promising means to control quantum systems on an ultrafast time scale. However, the ultrafast switching on/off of the driving field comes with questions regarding the limits of the Floquet formalism (which is defined for an infinite periodic drive) through the switching process and to what extent the transient changes can be driven adiabatically. Experimentally addressing these questions has been difficult, in large part due to the absence of an established technique to measure coherent dynamics through the duration of the pulse. Here, using multidimensional coherent spectroscopy we explicitly excite, control, and probe a coherent superposition of excitons in the K and K' valleys in monolayer WS2. With a circularly polarized, red-detuned pump pulse, the degeneracy of the K and K' excitons can be lifted, and the phase of the coherence rotated. We directly measure phase rotations greater than π during the 100 fs driving pulse and show that this can be described by a combination of the AC-Stark shift of excitons in one valley and the Bloch-Siegert shift of excitons in the opposite valley. Despite showing a smooth evolution of the phase that directly follows the intensity envelope of the nonresonant pump pulse, the process is not perfectly adiabatic. By measuring the magnitude of the macroscopic coherence as it evolves before, during, and after the nonresonant pump pulse we show that there is additional decoherence caused by power broadening in the presence of the nonresonant pump. This nonadiabaticity arises as a result of interactions with the otherwise adiabatic Floquet states and may be a problem for many applications, such as manipulating qubits in quantum information processing; however, these measurements also suggest ways such effects can be minimized or eliminated.
Momentum-space Observation of Optically Excited Non-Thermal Electrons in Graphene with Persistent Pseudospin Polarization

Abstract:The unique optical properties of graphene, with broadband absorption and ultrafast response, make it a critical component of optoelectronic and spintronic devices. Using time-resolved momentum microscopy with high data rate and high dynamic range, we report momentum-space measurements of electrons promoted to the graphene conduction band with visible light, and their subsequent relaxation. We observe a pronounced non-thermal distribution of nascent photoexcited electrons with lattice pseudospin polarization in remarkable agreement with results of simple tight-binding theory. By varying the excitation fluence, we vary the relative importance of electron-electron vs. electron-phonon scattering in the relaxation of the initial distribution. Increasing the excitation fluence results in increased noncollinear electron-electron scattering and reduced pseudospin polarization, although up-scattered electrons retain a degree of polarization. These detailed momentum-resolved electron dynamics in graphene demonstrate the capabilities of high-performance time-resolved momentum microscopy in the study of 2D materials and can inform the design of graphene devices.

Femtosecond Coherence and Quantum Control of Single Molecules at Room Temperature

Abstract:Quantum mechanical phenomena, such as electronic coherence and entanglement, play a key role in achieving the unrivalled efficiencies of light-energy conversion in natural photosynthetic light-harvesting complexes, and triggered the growing interest in the possibility of organic quantum computing. Since biological systems are intrinsically heterogeneous, clear relations between structural and quantum-mechanical properties can only be obtained by investigating individual assemblies. However, single-molecule techniques to access ultrafast coherences at physiological conditions were not available so far. Here we show by employing femtosecond pulse-shaping techniques that quantum coherences in single organic molecules can be created, probed, and manipulated at ambient conditions even in highly disordered solid environments. We find broadly distributed coherence decay times for different individual molecules giving direct insight into the structural heterogeneity of the local surroundings. Most importantly, we induce Rabi-oscillations and control the coherent superposition state in a single molecule, thus performing a basic femtosecond single-qubit operation at room temperature.

Abstract:Emitter dephasing is one of the key issues in the performance of solid-state single-photon sources. Among the various sources of dephasing, acoustic phonons play a central role in adding decoherence to the single-photon emission. Here, we demonstrate that it is possible to tune and engineer the coherence of photons emitted from a single WSe2 monolayer quantum dot via selectively coupling it to a spectral cavity resonance. We utilize an open cavity to demonstrate spectral enhancement, leveling, and suppression of the highly asymmetric phonon sideband, finding excellent agreement with a microscopic description of the exciton-phonon dephasing in a truly two-dimensional system. Moreover, the impact of cavity tuning on the dephasing is directly assessed via optical interferometry, which points out the capability to utilize light-matter coupling to steer and design dephasing and coherence of quantum emitters in atomically thin crystals. https://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevLett.132.206903 © 2024 American Physical Society

Abstract:We study quantum coherence in a semiconductor charge qubit formed from a GaAs double quantum dot containing a single electron. Voltage pulses are applied to depletion gates to drive qubit rotations and noninvasive state readout is achieved using a quantum point contact charge detector. We measure a maximum coherence time of ∼7 ns at the charge degeneracy point, where the qubit level splitting is first-order insensitive to gate voltage fluctuations. Abstract:In quantum systems, coherent superpositions of electronic states evolve on ultrafast time scales (few femtoseconds to attoseconds; 1 attosecond = 0.001 femtoseconds = 10 −18 seconds), leading to a time-dependent charge density. Here we performed time-resolved measurements using attosecond soft x-ray pulses produced by a free-electron laser, to track the evolution of a coherent core-hole excitation in nitric oxide. Using an additional circularly polarized infrared laser pulse, we created a clock to time-resolve the electron dynamics and demonstrated control of the coherent electron motion by tuning the photon energy of the x-ray pulse. Core-excited states offer a fundamental test bed for studying coherent electron dynamics in highly excited and strongly correlated matter.
