Abstract:We address a three-dimensional model capable of describing coupled damage and plastic effects in solids at finite strains. Formulated within the variational setting of {\it generalized standard materials}, the constitutive model results from the balance of conservative and dissipative forces. Material response is rate-independent and associative and damage evolution is unidirectional. We assess the model features and performance on both uniaxial and non-proportional biaxial tests. The constitutive model is then complemented with the quasistatic equilibrium system and initial and boundary conditions. We produce numerical simulations with the help of the powerful multiphysics finite element software NETGEN/NGSolve. We show the flexibility of the implementation and run simulations for various 2D and 3D settings under different choices of boundary conditions and possibly in presence of pre-damaged regions.

Abstract:This study concerns an elastic–plastic cohesive zone model for metal–ceramic interfaces and the corresponding nonlinear finite element implementation for general boundary value problems that accounts for nonlinear traction separation constitutive relation including fine scale mechanisms of the bonded interfaces failure. The interfacial model, formulated in terms of geometrically nonlinear theory of plasticity, allows for localization of plastic deformation, ensuing damage and failure/fracture behavior of the interface at finite deformations. From the numerical simulations, fiber is modeled as a linearly elastic material while the constitutive relation of matrix material is modeled using large deformation of isotropic porous plastic material which includes the voids nucleate, grow and coalesce. Further, an extensive parametric study is conducted in which the effects of hardening/softening, cohesive yield stress and the damage displacement jumps in determining stress-strain response of the composite and fiber/matrix debonding process under quasi-static transverse loading. Moreover, the effects of initial yield stress and void volume fraction in the porous matrix are also considered. Results show there are significant effects of interface yield and failure/fracture as well as matrix porous plasticity on the overall deformational and failure response of composites.

Abstract:In this article we propose a discrete lattice model to simulate the elastic, plastic and failure behaviour of isotropic materials. Focus is given on the mathematical derivation of the lattice elements, nodes and edges, in the presence of plastic deformations and damage, i.e. stiffness degradation. By using discrete calculus and introducing non-local potential for plasticity, a force-based approach, we provide a matrix formulation necessary for software implementation. The output is a non-linear system with allowance for elasticity, plasticity and damage in lattices. This is the key tool for explicit analysis of micro-crack generation and population growth in plastically deforming metals, leading to macroscopic degradation of their mechanical properties and fitness for service. An illustrative example, analysing a local region of a node, is given to demonstrate the system performance.

Abstract:This paper introduces a particle-based framework for simulating the behavior of elastoplastic materials and the formation of fractures, grounded in Peridynamic theory. Traditional approaches, such as the Finite Element Method (FEM) and Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH), to modeling elastic materials have primarily relied on discretization techniques and continuous constitutive model. However, accurately capturing fracture and crack development in elastoplastic materials poses significant challenges for these conventional models. Our approach integrates a Peridynamic-based elastic model with a density constraint, enhancing stability and realism. We adopt the Von Mises yield criterion and a bond stretch criterion to simulate plastic deformation and fracture formation, respectively. The proposed method stabilizes the elastic model through a density-based position constraint, while plasticity is modeled using the Von Mises yield criterion within the bond of particle paris. Fracturing and the generation of fine fragments are facilitated by the fracture criterion and the application of complementarity operations to the inter-particle connections. Our experimental results demonstrate the efficacy of our framework in realistically depicting a wide range of material behaviors, including elasticity, plasticity, and fracturing, across various scenarios. An experiment on the elasticity, plasticity and cutting of an elastoplastic dough. The dough is made to drop onto a wooden board, and collide with the rolling pin and the metal blade to exhibit the rendering effects of elasticity, plasticity and fracture within our particle framework. image

Abstract:To simulate the plastic deformation and the progressive failure process of fiber reinforced polymer composites under 3D stress conditions, a new elastic-plastic damage model is proposed to satisfy the objectivity of 3D stress conditions. A new two-parameter 3D plasticity criterion and a simple non-associated flow potential, expressed by stress invariants of a transversely isotropic unidirectional (UD) lamina, are developed to characterize plastic deformation in an objective way. Moreover, the material degradation model and damage evolution laws are constructed on a matrix fracture angle-dependent coordinate system to ensure the objectivity of the continuum damage mechanics (CDM) approach. In addition, a new linear law alleviating mesh dependence is derived to govern the damage variable evolution in the elastic-plastic damage process. The effectiveness and objectivity of the proposed material model are demonstrated by a series of test cases.

Abstract:Finite plasticity theories are still a subject of controversy and lively discussions. Among the approaches to finite elastoplasticity two became especially popular. The first, implemented in the commercial finite element codes, is based on the introduction of a hypoelastic constitutive law and the additive elastic-plastic decomposition of the deformation rate tensor. Unfortunately, the use of hypoelasticity may lead to a nonphysical creation or dissipation of energy in a closed deformation cycle. In order to replace hypoelasticity with hyperelasticity the second popular approach based on the multiplicative elastic-plastic decomposition of the deformation gradient tensor was developed. Unluckily, the latter theory is not perfect as well because it introduces intermediate plastic configurations, which are geometrically incompatible, non-unique, and, consequently, fictitious physically. In the present work, an attempt is made to combine strengths of the described approaches avoiding their drawbacks. Particularly, a tensor of the plastic deformation rate is introduced in the additive elastic-plastic decomposition of the velocity gradient. This tensor is used in the flow rule defined by the generalized isotropic Reiner-Rivlin fluid. The tensor of the plastic deformation rate is also used in an evolution equation that allows calculating an elastic strain tensor which, in its turn, is used in the hyperelastic constitutive law. Thus, the present approach employs hyperelasticity and the additive decomposition of the velocity gradient avoiding nonphysical hypoelasticity and the multiplicative decomposition of the deformation gradient associated with incompatible plastic configurations. The developed finite elastoplasticity framework for isotropic materials is specified to extend the classical -theory of metal plasticity to large deformations and the simple shear deformation is analyzed.

Abstract:<p>The purpose of continuum plasticity models is to efficiently predict the behavior of structures beyond their elastic limits. The purpose of multiscale materials science models, among them crystal plasticity models, is to understand the material behavior and design the material for a given target. The current successful continuum hyperelastoplastic models are based in the multiplicative decomposition from crystal plasticity, but significant differences in the computational frameworks of both approaches remain, making comparisons not straightforward. In previous works we have presented a theory for multiplicative continuum elastoplasticity which solved many long-standing issues, preserving the appealing structure of additive infinitesimal Wilkins algorithms. In this work we extend the theory to crystal plasticity. We show that the new formulation for crystal plasticity is parallel and comparable in structure to continuum plasticity, preserving the attractive aspects of the framework: (1) simplicity of the kinematics resulting in additive strain updates as in the infinitesimal framework; (2) possibility of very large elastic strains and unrestricted type of hyperelastic behavior; (3) immediate plain backward-Euler algorithmic implementation of the continuum theory avoiding algorithmically motivated exponential mappings, yet preserving isochoric flow; (4) absence of Mandel-type stresses in the formulation; (5) objectiveness and weak-invariance by construction due to the use of flow rules in terms of elastic corrector rates. We compare the results of our crystal plasticity formulation with the classical formulation from Kalidindi, Bronkhorst and Anand based on quadratic strains and an exponential mapping update of the plastic deformation gradient.</p>

Abstract:A coupled theory of continuum damage mechanics and finite strain plasticity (with small elastic strains) is formulated in the Eulerian reference system. The yield function used is of the von Mises type and incorporates both isotropic and kinematic hardening. An explicit matrix representation is derived for the damage effect tensor for a general state of deformation and damage. Although the theory is applicable to anisotropic damage, the matrix representation is restricted to isotropy.A linear transformation is shown to exist between the effective deviatoric Cauchy stress tensor and the total Cauchy stress tensor. It is also shown that a linear transformation between the deviatoric Cauchy stress tensor and its effective counterpart is not possible as this will lead to plastic incompressibility in damaged materials. In addition, an effective elasto-plastic stiffness tensor is derived that includes the effects of damage.The proposed model is applied to void growth through the use of Gurson's yield function. It is also shown how a modified Gurson function can be related to the proposed model. Some interesting results are obtained in this case.

Abstract:In this paper a constitutive model based on an internal variable-formulation of plasticity theory for the non-linear analysis of concrete is presented. The model uses a new yield criterion which matches experimental data quite well and it accounts for both elastic and plastic stiffness degradations effects. Onset and amount of cracking can be studied by a simple postprocessing of the finite-element plasticity solution. The accuracy of the model is checked with some examples of application.

Abstract:A ductile damage theory is presented by coupling the covariant formulation of finite deformation plasticity with the phase field modeling of fracture, including kinematic hardening for the ductile response of the materials. A phase field coupled nonlinear kinematic hardening equation is proposed in the reference configuration having equivalent representation through the Lie derivative of the kinematic hardening tensor by push‐forward operation in the spatial configuration, thus ensuring the satisfaction of frame invariance. To capture the correct physical response of the material by the phase field evolution equation, the fracture driving function, that is, the difference between the sum of elastic and plastic energies and threshold energy, after the damage initiation is modified by an energy release controlling function, which is an empirical relation of equivalent plastic strain. In defining the energy release controlling function, well‐defined points with physical significance in the experimental load versus displacement curve are used. To simulate the response of the material in relatively large time steps, a modified staggered scheme is presented, evaluating the fracture driving and energy release controlling functions from the previous converged step and using the updated phase field variable in the weak form of the momentum balance equation. To quantify different material parameters from available experimental results in the literature, the developed phase field coupled elasto‐plastic model uses a neural network optimization procedure consisting of neural network training together with optimization in MATLAB and finite element model evaluation in Abaqus user element subroutine UEL. Model capabilities are demonstrated by simulating the crack propagation in complex 3D geometries such as the second and third Sandia Fracture Challenges.

Abstract:A physically based material model for metals, with elastic–plastic and damage/failure orthotropy is proposed in this paper. The model is defined within the frameworks of irreversible thermodynamics and configurational continuum mechanics and integrated in the isoclinic configuration. The use of the multiplicative decomposition of deformation gradient makes the model applicable to arbitrary plastic and damage deformations. To account for the physical mechanisms of failure, the concept of thermally activated damage initially proposed by Klepaczko (1990) was adopted as the basis for the new damage evolution model. This makes the proposed damage/failure model compatible with the Mechanical Threshold Strength (MTS) model (Follansbee and Kocks, 1988; Chen and Gray, 1996; Goto et al., 2000; Gray et al., 1999; Chen et al., 1998) which was used to control evolution of flow stress during plastic deformation. In addition the constitutive model is coupled with a shock equation of state which allows for modelling of shock wave propagation in the material. The new model was implemented in DYNA3D and our in-house non-linear transient SPH code, MCM (Meshless Continuum Mechanics).Parameters for the new constitutive model for AA7010 (a polycrystalline aluminium alloy, whose orthotropy is a consequence of grain morphology), were derived on the basis of the tensile tests and Taylor anvil tests. The tensile tests were performed for the range of temperatures between 223.15K and 413.15K, and strain rates between 6.4×10-4s-1 and 6.4×101s-1.The new model was validated in two stages. The first stage comprised a series of single element tests design to separately validate elasticity, plasticity and damage related parts of the model. The second stage comprised a series of numerical simulations of Taylor anvil and plate impact tests for AA7010 and comparison of the numerical results with the experimental data. The numerical results illustrate the ability of the new model to predict experimentally observed behaviour.

Abstract:The classic elastoplastic-damage constitutive model neglects the effects of loading histories. But in fact, more and more experiments results show that the states of stress can significantly affect the response of metals not only in the plasticity but also in the damage evolution. This paper presents an elasto-plastic fully coupled ductile damage constitutive model which considers the corrections of the metal plasticity and the damage evolution through the states of stress. The stress triaxiality and the Lode angle are frequently used to characterize the state of stress. The correction of metal plasticity is achieved by applying a new flow stress model associated with the stress triaxiality and Lode angle. A stress state parameter which depends on the function of stress triaxiality and Lode angle is also proposed. In order to calibrate the damage evolution, the stress state parameter is introduced into the Chaboche damage model. The experiment results of aluminium 2024-T351 are used to validate the proposed constitutive model.

Abstract:This work considers a recently developed finite-deformation elastoplasticity theory that assumes distinct tensorial fields describing macro -plasticity and micro -plasticity, where the latter is determined by a higher-order balance equation with associated boundary conditions and evolves according to a contribution to the Helmholtz free-energy density that depends on a Nye-Kröner-like dislocation density tensor and is referred to as the defect energy . The theory is meant to set the onset of micro-plasticity at a stress level lower than that activating macro-plasticity, such as micro-plasticity aims at explaining and characterizing the increase in yield stress with diminishing size. Additionally, the formulation relies on smooth elastic–plastic transitions for both plasticity fields, even if focusing on rate-independent response. This investigation demonstrates the capability of the proposed theory to predict size-effects of interest in small-scale metal plasticity by focusing on multiple loading cycles and, prominently, on the scaling of the apparent yield stress with sample size, the latter being a crucial open issue in the recent literature on modeling size-dependent plasticity. To this end, this work considers the specialization of the theory to small deformations and proposes a finite element implementation for the constrained simple shear problem. Importantly, it is shown that the simplest treatment of plastic strain gradients, which consists of adopting a quadratic defect energy, can be conveniently used to predict reliable size-effects, although in the literature on strain gradient plasticity quadratic defect energies have always been associated with a relatively poor description of size-effects. In fact, in the present theory the limits of the quadratic defect energy are overcome by leveraging on the complex interplay between micro- and macro-plasticity fields. The capability of the proposed theory is quantitatively demonstrated by predicting results from the literature that are obtained from discrete dislocation dynamics simulations on planar polycrystals of grains with variable size subjected to macroscopic pure shear.

Automated model discovery of finite strain elastoplasticity from uniaxial experiments

Abstract:Constitutive modeling lies at the core of mechanics, allowing us to map strains onto stresses for a material in a given mechanical setting. Historically, researchers relied on phenomenological modeling where simple mathematical relationships were derived through experimentation and curve fitting. Recently, to automate the constitutive modeling process, data-driven approaches based on neural networks have been explored. While initial naive approaches violated established mechanical principles, recent efforts concentrate on designing neural network architectures that incorporate physics and mechanistic assumptions into machine-learning-based constitutive models. For history-dependent materials, these models have so far predominantly been restricted to small-strain formulations. In this work, we develop a finite strain plasticity formulation based on thermodynamic potentials to model mixed isotropic and kinematic hardening. We then leverage physics-augmented neural networks to automate the discovery of thermodynamically consistent constitutive models of finite strain elastoplasticity from uniaxial experiments. We apply the framework to both synthetic and experimental data, demonstrating its ability to capture complex material behavior under cyclic uniaxial loading. Furthermore, we show that the neural network enhanced model trains easier than traditional phenomenological models as it is less sensitive to varying initial seeds. our model's ability to generalize beyond the training set underscores its robustness and predictive power. By automating the discovery of hardening models, our approach eliminates user bias and ensures that the resulting constitutive model complies with thermodynamic principles, thus offering a more systematic and physics-informed framework.

Abstract:The formulation and finite element implementation of an efficient anisotropic damage-plasticity model is proposed to simulate the nonlinear behavior of plain concrete at small strains. The model's formulation is presented first; then, the implementation strategy is described. A stress-based yield criterion and two damage criteria are used to determine the nominal stress tensor. Using two damage tensors automatically accounts for the stiffness recovery in transition from tension to compression and vice versa. Some numerical issues are addressed, and the remedy is proposed. The deficiencies of existing anisotropic damage-plasticity models for plain concrete are also identified and discussed. Different alternatives for the general formulation of damage procedure are presented and compared. Three methods are introduced for calculation of damage hardening parameters and compared in terms of efficiency. The extension of the model to viscoplastic behavior is carried out using the frequently-used Duvaut–Lions viscoplasticity theory. Moreover, the formulation is extended to include the large crack in monotonic and cyclic loading, which improves the response of material under large values of strain. The model is included in an in-house finite element software previously developed by the authors. It is validated, and its efficiency is evaluated by comparing the software results with a set of experimental tests, such as monotonic uniaxial and biaxial tests, cyclic uniaxial tests, and some structural single-mode and mixed-mode tests.

Dynamic perfect plasticity and damage in viscoelastic solids

Abstract:In this paper we analyze an isothermal and isotropic model for viscoelastic media combining linearized perfect plasticity (allowing for concentration of plastic strain and development of shear bands) and damage effects in a dynamic setting. The interplay between the viscoelastic rheology with inertia, elasto-plasticity, and unidirectional rate-dependent incomplete damage affecting both the elastic and viscous response, as well as the plastic yield stress, is rigorously characterized by showing existence of weak solutions to the constitutive and balance equations of the model. The analysis relies on the notions of plastic-strain measures and bounded-deformation displacements, on sophisticated time-regularity estimates to establish a duality between acceleration and velocity of the elastic displacement, on the theory of rate-independent processes for the energy conservation in the dynamical-plastic part, and on the proof of the strong convergence of the elastic strains. Existence of a suitably defined weak solutions is proved rather constructively by using a staggered two-step time discretization scheme.

Abstract:We have developed a large deformation viscoplasticity theory with combined isotropic and kinematic hardening based on the dual decompositions F=FeFp [Kröner, E., 1960. Allgemeine kontinuumstheorie der versetzungen und eigenspannungen. Archive for Rational Mechanics and Analysis 4, 273–334] and Fp=FenpFdisp [Lion, A., 2000. Constitutive modelling in finite thermoviscoplasticity: a physical approach based on nonlinear rheological models. International Journal of Plasticity 16, 469–494]. The elastic distortion Fe contributes to a standard elastic free-energy ψ(e), while Fenp, the energetic part of Fp, contributes to a defect energy ψ(p) – these two additive contributions to the total free energy in turn lead to the standard Cauchy stress and a back-stress. Since Fe=FFp-1 and Fenp=FpFdisp-1, the evolution of the Cauchy stress and the back-stress in a deformation-driven problem is governed by evolution equations for Fp and Fdisp – the two flow rules of the theory.We have also developed a simple, stable, semi-implicit time-integration procedure for the constitutive theory for implementation in displacement-based finite element programs. The procedure that we develop is “simple” in the sense that it only involves the solution of one non-linear equation, rather than a system of non-linear equations. We show that our time-integration procedure is stable for relatively large time steps, is first-order accurate, and is objective.

A modeling framework for coupling plasticity with species diffusion

Abstract:This paper presents a modeling framework---mathematical model and computational framework---to study the response of a plastic material due to the presence and transport of a chemical species in the host material. Such a modeling framework is important to a wide variety of problems ranging from Li-ion batteries, moisture diffusion in cementitious materials, hydrogen diffusion in metals, to consolidation of soils under severe loading-unloading regimes. The mathematical model incorporates experimental observations reported in the literature on how (elastic and plastic) material properties change because of the presence and transport of a chemical species. Also, the model accounts for one-way (transport affects the deformation but not vice versa) and two-way couplings between deformation and transport subproblems. The resulting coupled equations are not amenable to analytical solutions; so, we present a robust computational framework for obtaining numerical solutions. Given that popular numerical formulations do not produce nonnegative solutions, the computational framework uses an optimized-based nonnegative formulation that respects physical constraints (e.g., nonnegative concentrations). For completeness, we will also show the effect and propagation of the negative concentrations, often produced by contemporary transport solvers, into the overall predictions of deformation and concentration fields. Notably, anisotropy of the diffusion process exacerbates these unphysical violations. Using representative numerical examples, we will discuss how the concentration field affects plastic deformations of a degrading solid. Based on these numerical examples, we also discuss how plastic zones spread because of material degradation. To illustrate how the proposed computational framework performs, we report various performance metrics such as optimization iterations and time-to-solution.

Abstract:Clay and sand were often treated as two different materials that required respective constitutive models to capture the state-dependent nonassociated responses. This study developed a three-dimensional isotropic plasticity model for clay with different over-consolidation ratios (OCRs) and sand with particle breakage, through adopting shift stress-enriched loading/bounding surface, fractional flow rule and flexible critical state line, in the transformed stress space. The model was implemented in Abaqus through UMAT subroutine with an explicit adaptive substepping integration algorithm. Validation against a series of element tests on clay and sand showed that the unified model can well reproduce the stress–strain and critical state behavior of clay and sand. To further demonstrate the capability of the model, two typical boundary value problems, i.e., shear band and ground settlement, were simulated. It was found that as the shear band initiated, higher shear strain and dilatancy were accumulated within the shear band, whereas dilatancy outside the shear band ceased soon with further shearing. Ground settlement and the associated excess pore water pressure at the same consolidation time decreased with the increasing OCR, which agreed well with other studies. The simulation performances verified the capability of the unified model in resolving practical engineering problems.
