Abstract:Bach, Frank, and Kunde introduce a hypothesis that encompasses two main claims: (1) motor imagery relies primarily on representations of the perceptual effects of actions, and (2) the engagement of motor resources provides access to the specific timing, kinematic or internal bodily state that characterize an action. In this commentary, I argue that the first claim is compelling and suggest some alternatives to the second one.

Abstract:In their article, Frank and colleagues review the effectiveness of motor imagery in learning motor skills, proposing a perceptual-cognitive theory that may facilitate learning. Imagery effectiveness could be enhanced by different techniques, influencing neurophysiological processes. Identifying individuals who could benefit from MI is crucial, and incorporating MI into strong motor representations may lead to better outcomes. Combining MI with other treatments like virtual reality and brain stimulation can further enhance its effectiveness. The purpose of this commentary is to analyze these interventions in light of their potential to influence perceptual-cognitive states in order to strengthen imagery practice and achieve the desired outcomes.

Abstract:Our commentary expands the multisensory and modulating factors proposed by Kruger et al.'s (2023) internal models of action imagery and sensory crossovers. We will discuss the essence of imagery experiences as conceptual intersections among sensory, movement and affective properties that require further neuro-anatomical-contextual mapping to better understand the practical application of imagery. Accordingly, we will propose alternative ideas of daisy-chaining and motor imagery systems. The role of imagery speed, and other properties of movement for refining movement and self-regulation will be considered along with sex as a modulating factor in intra-individual abilities to image movement.

Abstract:Modifications of imagined sensory consequences will not benefit overt performance when they cannot be transformed into motor outflow that produces them. With physical practice, the acquisition of internal models of motor transformations is largely based on prediction errors that are absent in imagery practice. What can imagery practice nevertheless contribute to transformation learning? Explicit, strategic adjustments to novel transformations should be possible. This appears less likely for implicit adjustments. Are there variants of imagery practice that can produce adjustments without conscious awareness of the transformation and/or the resultant movement changes?

Abstract:Motor imagery (MI) or the mental simulation of action is now increasingly being studied using neuroimaging techniques such as positron emission tomography and functional magnetic resonance imaging. The booming interest in capturing the neural underpinning of MI has provided a large amount of data which until now have never been quantitatively summarized. The aim of this activation likelihood estimation (ALE) meta-analysis was to provide a map of the brain structures involved in MI. Combining the data from 75 papers revealed that MI consistently recruits a large fronto-parietal network in addition to subcortical and cerebellar regions. Although the primary motor cortex was not shown to be consistently activated, the MI network includes several regions which are known to play a role during actual motor execution. The body part involved in the movements, the modality of MI and the nature of the MI tasks used all seem to influence the consistency of activation within the general MI network. In addition to providing the first quantitative cortical map of MI, we highlight methodological issues that should be addressed in future research.

Abstract:A vast body of research suggests that the primary motor cortex is involved in motor imagery. This raises the issue of inhibition: how is it possible for motor imagery not to lead to motor execution? Bach et al. (Psychol Res Psychol Forschung. 10.1007/s00426-022-01773-w, 2022, this issue) suggest that the motor execution threshold may be "upregulated" during motor imagery to prevent execution. Alternatively, it has been proposed that, in parallel to excitatory mechanisms, inhibitory mechanisms may be actively suppressing motor output during motor imagery. These theories are verbal in nature, with well-known limitations. Here, we describe a toy-model of the inhibitory mechanisms thought to be at play during motor imagery to start disentangling predictions from competing hypotheses.

Abstract:Human beings are able to imagine actions with the aim to change movement coordination and to learn particular movements. Meta-analyses to date have shown that when individuals systematically engage in imagery of a motor action without overt behavior this can improve motor performance and facilitate motor learning. Despite a considerable body of research in neuroscience, psychology, and sport science, however, there is at present no consensus on the neurocognitive mechanisms of imagery, and the mechanisms that lead to learning via imagined action are still being debated. In particular, the differences between imagined and overt action, and respective learning effects, remain to be fully explained. The present collection of manuscripts is a result of compiling both theoretical advances in the field of motor control and motor learning and those in imagery research to better understand imagery and learning. It is structured alongside five position papers from leading experts in the field, each of which is followed by a series of short commentaries written by experts from various disciplines. This collection demonstrates (a) that conceptualizations of imagery are manifold, vary highly and depend on the perspective chosen, (b) that existing approaches to the neurocognitive mechanisms of imagery and imagery practice of motor actions draw on distinct motor control and learning perspectives, (c) that perspectives from the wider fields of motor control and learning stimulate new approaches to explain imagery and imagery practice, (d) and that future research is needed to investigate and compare different perspectives and conceptualizations of the neurocognitive mechanisms of imagery and imagery practice of motor actions.

Abstract:Motor imagery is frequently utilized to improve the performance of specific target movements in sports and rehabilitation. In this study, we show that motor imagery can facilitate learning of not only the imagined target movements but also sequentially linked overt movements. Hybrid sequences comprising imagined and physically executed segments allowed participants to learn specific movement characteristics of the executed segments when they were consistently associated with specific imagined segments. Electrophysiological recordings revealed that the degree of event-related synchronization in the alpha and beta bands during a basic motor imagery task was correlated with imagery-evoked motor learning. Thus, both behavioral and neural evidence indicate that motor imagery's benefits extend beyond the imagined movements, improving performance in linked overt movements. This provides new evidence for the functional equivalence of imagined and overt movements and suggests new applications for imagery in sports and rehabilitation.

Abstract:Mental Imagery is a topic of longstanding and widespread scientific interest. Individual studies have typically focused on a single modality (e.g. Motor, Visual, Auditory) of Mental Imagery. Relatively little work has considered directly comparing and contrasting the brain networks associated with these different modalities of Imagery. The present study integrates data from 439 neuroimaging experiments to identify both modality-specific and shared neural networks involved in Mental Imagery. Comparing the networks involved in Motor, Visual, and Auditory Imagery identified a pattern whereby each form of Imagery preferentially recruited "higher level" associative brain regions involved in the associated "real" experience. Results also indicate significant overlap in a left-lateralized network including the pre-supplementary motor area, ventral premotor cortex and inferior parietal lobule. This pattern of results supports the existence of a "core" network that supports the attentional, spatial, and decision-making demands of Mental Imagery. Together these results offer new insights into the brain networks underlying human imagination.

Abstract:Abstract Bach (Psychological Research 2022, https://doi.org/10.1007/s00426-022-01773-w ) offer a re-conceptualisation of motor imagery, influenced by older ideas of ideomotor action and formulated in terms of action effects rather than motor output. We share the view of an essential role of action effect in action planning and motor imagery processes, but we challenge the claim that motor imagery is non-motoric in nature. In the present article, we critically review some of Bach et al.’s proposed ideas and pose questions of whether effect and motor processes are functionally separable, and if not, what mechanisms underlie motor imagery and what terminology best captures its function.

Abstract:In this issue, Frank et al. (2023) propose that motor imagery provides a perceptual-cognitive scaffold allowing 'perceptual' learning to transfer into 'motor' learning. The present commentary explores the perspective that changes in perception itself are often critical to the development of motor skills. Motor imagery may therefore be most beneficial for developing motor skills with high perceptual demands, such as requiring rapid action selection. Potential challenges for the perceptual-cognitive scaffold approach are identified based on the possible involvement of mechanisms involved in motor learning through movement execution, and how they may be recruited through the use of motor imagery.
Understanding effects of observing affordance-driven action during motor imagery through EEG analysis

Abstract:The aim of this paper is to investigate the impact of observing affordance-driven action during motor imagery. Affordance-driven action refers to actions that are initiated based on the properties of objects and the possibilities they offer for interaction. Action observation (AO) and motor imagery (MI) are two forms of motor simulation that can influence motor responses. We examined combined AO + MI, where participants simultaneously engaged in AO and MI. Two different kinds of combined AO + MI were employed. Participants imagined and observed the same affordance-driven action during congruent AO + MI, whereas in incongruent AO + MI, participants imagined the actual affordance-driven action while observing a distracting affordance involving the same object. EEG data were analyzed for the N2 component of event-related potential (ERP). Our study found that the N2 ERP became more negative during congruent AO + MI, indicating strong affordance-related activity. The maximum source current density (0.00611 μ A/mm 2 ) using Low-Resolution Electromagnetic Tomography (LORETA) was observed during congruent AO + MI in brain areas responsible for planning motoric actions. This is consistent with prefrontal cortex and premotor cortex activity for AO + MI reported in the literature. The stronger neural activity observed during congruent AO + MI suggests that affordance-driven actions hold promise for neurorehabilitation.

Abstract:Introduction: Auditory stimulation is one of the most important influence factors in the cognitive process. It is an important guiding role in cognitive motor process. However, previous studies on auditory stimuli mainly focused on the cognitive effects of auditory stimuli on the cortex, while the role of auditory stimuli in motor imagery tasks is still unclear. Methods: In order to explore the role of auditory stimuli in motor imagery tasks, we studied the EEG power spectrum distribution characteristics, frontal parietal mismatch negative (MMN) wave characteristics, and the Inter trial phase locking consistency (ITPC) characteristics of the prefrontal cognitive cortex and parietal motor cortex. In this study, 18 subjects were hired to complete the motor imagery tasks, induced by auditory stimuli of task related verbs and task independent nouns. Results: EEG power spectrum analysis showed that the activity of the contralateral motor cortex was significantly increased under the stimulation of verbs, and the amplitude of mismatch negative wave was also significantly increased. ITPC is mainly concentrated in μ, α, and γ bands in the process of motor imagery task guided by the auditory stimulus of verbs, while it is mainly concentrated in the β band under the nouns stimulation. This difference may be due to the impact of auditory cognitive process on motor imagery. Discussion: We speculate that there may be a more complex mechanism for the effect of auditory stimulation on the inter test phase lock consistency. When the stimulus sound has the corresponding meaning to the motor action, the parietal motor cortex may be more affected by the cognitive prefrontal cortex, thus changing its normal response mode. This mode change is due to the joint action of motor imagination, cognitive and auditory stimuli. This study provides new insight into the neural mechanism of motor imagery task guided by auditory stimuli, and provides more information on the activity characteristics of the brain network in motor imagery task by cognitive auditory stimulation.

Abstract:Simulation theory proposes motor imagery (MI) to be a simulation based on representations also used for motor execution (ME). Nonetheless, it is unclear how far they use the same neural code. We use multivariate pattern analysis (MVPA) and representational similarity analysis (RSA) to describe the neural representations associated with MI and ME within the frontoparietal motor network. During functional magnetic resonance imaging scanning, 20 volunteers imagined or executed 3 different types of right-hand actions. Results of MVPA showed that these actions as well as their modality (MI or ME) could be decoded significantly above chance from the spatial patterns of BOLD signals in premotor and posterior parietal cortices. This was also true for cross-modal decoding. Furthermore, representational dissimilarity matrices of frontal and parietal areas showed that MI and ME representations formed separate clusters, but that the representational organization of action types within these clusters was identical. For most ROIs, this pattern of results best fits with a model that assumes a low-to-moderate degree of similarity between the neural patterns associated with MI and ME. Thus, neural representations of MI and ME are neither the same nor totally distinct but exhibit a similar structural geometry with respect to different types of action.

Abstract:Motor imagery, that is the mental rehearsal of a motor skill, can lead to improvements when performing the same skill. Here we show a powerful and complementary role, in which motor imagery of different movements after actually performing a skill allows learning that is not possible without imagery. We leverage a well-studied motor learning task in which subjects reach in the presence of a dynamic (force-field) perturbation. When two opposing perturbations are presented alternately for the same physical movement, there is substantial interference, preventing any learning. However, when the same physical movement is associated with follow-through movements that differ for each perturbation, both skills can be learned. Here we show that when subjects perform the skill and only imagine the follow-through, substantial learning occurs. In contrast, without such motor imagery there was no learning. Therefore, motor imagery can have a profound effect on skill acquisition even when the imagery is not of the skill itself. Our results suggest that motor imagery may evoke different neural states for the same physical state, thereby enhancing learning.

Abstract:Motor imagery is considered as an ideal window to observe neural processes of action representations. Behavioral evidence has indicated an alteration of motor imagery in amnestic mild cognitive impairment (aMCI). However, it still remains unclear on the altered neurophysiological processing mechanism of motor imagery and whether this mechanism links the abnormal biological basis of motor imagery with impaired cognition in aMCI. This study was to investigate the altered neurophysiological processing mechanism of motor imagery and to examine the relationships between this knowledge and the altered structural basis of motor imagery with impaired cognition in aMCI. A hand mental rotation paradigm was used to manipulate the processing of motor imagery while event-related brain potentials (ERPs) were recorded and gray matter (GM) voxel-based morphometry was performed in 20 aMCI and 29 healthy controls. Compared with controls, aMCI exhibited lower ERP amplitudes in parietal cortex and higher ERP amplitudes in frontal cortex during motor imagery. In addition, aMCI showed reduced GM volumes in cerebellum posterior lobe, insula and hippocampus/parahippocampal gyrus, and increased GM volumes in middle cingulate gyrus and superior frontal gyrus. Most importantly, increased ERP amplitude significantly mediated the association between increased GM and cognition. This study provided a novel evidence for the relationships between the electrophysiological processing mechanism and structural basis of motor imagery with impaired cognition in aMCI. It suggests that improving neural activity by stimulating the frontal lobe can potentially contribute to acquire motor imagery skills for neurological rehabilitation in aMCI subjects.

Abstract:Motor simulation theory (MST; Jeannerod, 2001) purports to explain how various action-related cognitive states relate to actual motor execution. Specifically, it proposes that motor imagery (MI; imagining an action without executing the movements involved) shares certain mental representations and mechanisms with action execution, and hence, activates similar neural pathways to those elicited during the latter process. Furthermore, MST postulates that MI works by rehearsing neural motor systems off-line via a hypothetical simulation process. In this paper, we review evidence cited in support of MST and evaluate its efficacy in understanding the cognitive mechanisms underlying MI. In doing so, we delineate the precise postulates of simulation theory and clarify relevant terminology. Based on our cognitive-level analysis, we argue firstly that the psychological mechanisms underlying MI are poorly understood and require additional conceptual and empirical analysis. In addition, we identify a number of potentially fruitful lines of inquiry for future investigators of MST and MI.

Abstract:Motor imagery is defined as a dynamic state during which the representation of a given motor act is internally rehearsed without overt motor output. Some evidence in experimental psychology has suggested that imagery ability is crucial for the correct understanding of social intention. The present study was conducted first to confirm that the nature of the motor intention leads to early modulations of movement kinematics. Secondly, we tested whether humans use imagery to read an agent’s intention when observing the very first element of a complex action sequence. Results revealed early variations in movement kinematics between three different social actions and further showed that human agents can use these early deviants to anticipate above chance level the end-result before seeing the second half of the sequence. Response times in the observation task were similar in duration to those measured in the true production task, suggesting the use of motor imagery for trial categorization. Nevertheless, in a third study, the use of an artificial (neural network) classifier demonstrated that classification within the first 500 ms is possible without cognitive imagery processing. Hence, our results suggest that low-level motor indices afford intention reading without need for motor imagery but that human agents may use imaging beyond simulation to create an embodied sense of interactivity.

An emerging paradigm: a strength-based approach to exploring mental imagery

Abstract:Mental imagery, or the ability to simulate in the mind information that is not currently perceived by the senses, has attracted considerable research interest in psychology since the early 1970's. Within the past two decades, research in this field-as in cognitive psychology more generally-has been dominated by neuroscientific methods that typically involve comparisons between imagery performance of participants from clinical populations with those who exhibit apparently normal cognitive functioning. Although this approach has been valuable in identifying key neural substrates of visual imagery, it has been less successful in understanding the possible mechanisms underlying another simulation process, namely, motor imagery or the mental rehearsal of actions without engaging in the actual movements involved. In order to address this oversight, a "strength-based" approach has been postulated which is concerned with understanding those on the high ability end of the imagery performance spectrum. Guided by the expert performance approach and principles of ecological validity, converging methods have the potential to enable imagery researchers to investigate the neural "signature" of elite performers, for example. Therefore, the purpose of this paper is to explain the origin, nature, and implications of the strength-based approach to mental imagery. Following a brief explanation of the background to this latter approach, we highlight some important theoretical advances yielded by recent research on mental practice, mental travel, and meta-imagery processes in expert athletes and dancers. Next, we consider the methodological implications of using a strength-based approach to investigate imagery processes. The implications for the field of motor cognition are outlined and specific research questions, in dynamic imagery, imagery perspective, measurement, multi-sensory imagery, and metacognition that may benefit from this approach in the future are sketched briefly.
