Abstract:Municipal solid waste circulating fluidized bed incineration (MSWCFBI) fly ash was a hazardous waste, maintaining challenges for disposal. One effective approach was stabilizing the toxic heavy metal ions in the fly ash structures in situ. This work proposed a fusion–hydrothermal method, including fusion pretreatment in nitrogen atmosphere and microwave-assisted hydrothermal process, to treat three MSWCFBI fly ash samples. Specifically, leaching tests were performed to demonstrate the heavy metal stabilization. Through the treatment of the fusion–hydrothermal process, the concentrations of Cd, Cu, Zn, Pb, Ni, and Cr ions leaching from the fly ashes were obviously less than those of the raw fly ash and the sample only treated by hydrothermal process. Meanwhile, the heavy metal ions migrating from the fly ash to the hydrothermal residual liquid were reduced. Importantly, lots of zeolites formed during the fusion–hydrothermal process, such as to bermorite and sodalite. The fusion pretreatment significantly facilitated the conversion of quartz into amorphous silicon and silicate salts. Then, the silicon dissolution was accelerated and zeolite formation was promoted. Eventually, the heavy metal ions could be trapped in zeolite frameworks, enhancing the stabilization of heavy metal. Moreover, the cation-exchange capability values of the three treated fly ash were 1.099, 1.168, and 1.188 meq g−1, two-folder larger than those of the samples only treated by hydrothermal process. In summary, the fusion–hydrothermal method could facilitate the stabilization of heavy metal ions in the fly ash and the as-obtained solid product with high content of zeolite was promising for future applications.

Abstract:High chloride content in municipal solid waste incineration (MSWI) fly ash is a critical restriction for the recycling and re-utilization due to the acceleration of the corrosion process in construction material. Therefore, the investigation of chloride distribution and transition behavior in fly ash is of great significance. In this study, the distribution and chemical species of chloride in fly ash were first analyzed through varying mechanical pressures (10, 30, 50, 70, and 100 MPa) and sintering temperatures (300 °C, 400 °C and 500 °C) during the pressure-assisted sintering process. Instrumental analyses of SEM-EDX, element mapping, XPS, XRD and chloride leaching concentration were conducted to explore the chloride transition behavior. The results suggested that chlorides were homogeneously distributed on the surface of fly ash particles, which was significantly influenced by the microstructure change during the pressure-assisted sintering process. In addition, the chloride migration was enhanced by the pore shrinkage under different mechanical pressures and the increased atomic mobility at various temperatures. The mineral results showed that the main crystals in raw fly ash were NaCl, KCl and CaClOH, and the minerals were transformed into more complex and stable crystal phases, such as Ca10(Si2O7)2SiO4Cl2(OH)2 and Ca10(SiO4)3(SO4)3Cl. The transformation of chloride from soluble salts to stable Cl-containing minerals is beneficial to the immobilization of chloride, which suggested that pressure-assisted sintering could effectively decrease the chloride leaching concentration. This study provides a further understanding of chloride transition and distribution behavior during pressure-assisted sintering treatment.

Abstract:Municipal solid waste incineration (MSWI) fly ash contains highly toxic heavy metals and polychlorinated dibenzo dioxins/furans (PCDD/Fs), which are a type of hazardous waste. The pollution characteristics of fly ash have changed with the development of stoker grate incinerators and the fly ash treatment technology; however, no research has been focused on this in recent years. In this study, 12 fly ash samples were collected from 9 grate power plants in southeastern China, and their PCDD/Fs and heavy metal concentrations were determined and compared to previous fly ash data. The PCDD/Fs concentration in fly ash was in the range of 0.002-0.051 ngI-TEQ/g, with an average of 0.027 ngI-TEQ/g. Furthermore, 1,2,3,4,6,7,8-HpCDD and OCDD made the most significant contributions to PCDDs. The distribution of 10 dioxins exhibited bimodal, unimodal, and normal characteristics. Linear fitting demonstrated a strong correlation between toxicity and 1,2,3,7,8-PentaCDD, 1,2,3,7,8-PentaCDF, and 2,3,4,7,8-PentaCDF. Concerning heavy metals, Pb poses a significant environmental risk. This is the first time that fly ash treated with a chelating agent has been thoroughly analyzed, which is vital for understanding the pollution level and treatment of fly ash derived from current power plants.

Abstract:In this work, heavy metals in municipal solid waste incineration (MSWI) fly ash from circulating fluidized bed (CFB) and grate furnaces were solidified by microwave-assisted hydrothermal treatment. Three process additives of NaOH, Na2HPO4, and H2O were investigated to identify the optimal additive for most fly ash samples. The standard solid waste extraction procedure for measuring leaching toxicity, namely, the acetic acid buffer solution method (HJ/T 300-2007), was used to determine the heavy metal toxicity of all samples and experimental products. X-ray fluorescence, X-ray diffraction, and inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectroscopy were used to determine the characteristics of fly ash, including chemical compositions, mineral structures, and leaching concentrations of heavy metals. The experimental results revealed that Na2HPO4 was an efficient additive in the microwave-assisted hydrothermal process for solidifying heavy metals in fly ash. Under certain conditions, heavy metals were cured completely with only 20 min of microwave heating. Several types of zeolites were formed during the disposal process, which contributed to the solidification of heavy metals. Moreover, PO43-ions also played an important role in curing heavy metals. Microwave-assisted hydrothermal treatment with the Na2HPO4 additive is demonstrated as an effective method for disposal of MSWI fly ash before transfer to landfills. Compared with previous studies, microwave assisted hydrothermal treatment offers a promising technology for management of MSWI fly ash with high efficiency and energy savings.
Fate of Cl and chlorination mechanism during municipal solid waste incineration fly ash reutilization using thermal treatment: a review

Abstract:Safe and sustainable treatment of municipal solid waste incineration fly ash (MSWI FA) is urgently needed worldwide because of its high heavy metals, dioxin, and chlorine (Cl) contents. Thermal treatment is widely considered as a promising method for treating MSWI FA owing to its high toxic content removal efficiency and resource recovery; however, residual Cl is a concurrent critical problem faced during reutilisation of thermal treatment products. This review summarises the innovative thermal treatment methods of MSWI FA, such as those employed in production of cement, lightweight aggregates, glass slag, and metal alloys. The characteristics of Cl in MSWI FA, removal rate, transformation of water-soluble Cl into water-insoluble Cl, and the effect of different influencing factors such as temperature, composition, superheated steam, and mechanical pressure were analysed. The volatilization and decomposition of NaCl, KCl and CaClOH dominates Cl removal; however, the degradation of organic Cl and heavy metal chlorination volatilization process that generate HCl and heavy metal chlorides, respectively, also contributed to Cl removal. To promote the reutilisation of MSWI FA-based products, the leaching behaviour of residual Cl in products obtained by different thermal treatments was investigated.

Abstract:Circulating fluidized bed (CFB) and stoker grate are the two major municipal solid waste incineration (MSWI) technologies currently being used in China. In this work, the hydrothermal stabilization of heavy metals in fly ash collected from two types of MSWI plants is investigated. The components and mineralogical phases of the fly ash are studied by means of X-ray fluorescence and X-ray diffraction spectrometry. The distribution patterns of Cr, Cu, Zn, and Pb in MSWI fly ash before and after the hydrothermal process are evaluated using a modified Bureau Communautaire de Reference sequential extraction procedure. In addition, the environmental risk is assessed using individual contamination factors and risk assessment codes. The results indicate the following: (1) In comparison to raw fly ash, the speciation distributions of Cr, Cu, Zn, and Pb from a hydrothermally treated CFB fly ash sample are more stable than those from a hydrothermally treated stoker grate fly ash sample. (2) Co-firing municipal solid waste and coal changes the characteristics of the fly ash and is beneficial to heavy metal stabilization using the hydrothermal process. (3) The two types of hydrothermally treated fly ash samples in this study are considered to pose little or no contamination risk to the environment.

Abstract:Thermal treatment of municipal solid waste incineration (MSWI) fly ash (FA) allows heavy metals solidification, polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs) decomposition, and environmentally stable materials production, but lacking advanced insights into PCDD/Fs dramatically limits its development. In this study, the decomposition and reformation of PCDD/Fs during thermal treatment of two typical fly ashes (loading 0.294 and 0.594 ng I-TEQ/g PCDD/Fs, respectively) are systematically investigated, under conditions of three heating temperature (500, 800, and 1100 °C) and two atmospheres (oxidative and inert). Over 95 % of PCDD/Fs in FA are effectively decomposed for all tests mainly via cyclic skeleton destruction accompanied by dechlorination, but reformation predominantly through de novo synthesis in off-gases significantly reduces the overall elimination efficiency. Moreover, both de novo synthesis and chlorination are enhanced as temperature increase promoting migrations of catalytic metals and chlorine, yet are weakened at the absence of oxygen, both of which are revealed by PCDD/F-signatures evolution. Catalytic metal is identified as the most critical factor accounting for PCDD/Fs reformation, which is also evidenced by kinetic models of de novo synthesis. Finally, the decomposition and reformation pathways during thermal treatment of fly ashes are proposed. The results pave the way for controlling PCDD/Fs reformation and improving the thermal treatment of fly ashes.

Abstract:In this study, the behavior of heavy metal transformation during the co-thermal treatment of hazardous waste incineration fly ash (HWIFA) and Fe-containing hazardous waste (including hazardous waste incineration bottom slag (HWIBS) and electroplating sludge (ES)) was investigated. The findings demonstrated that such a treatment effectively reduced the static leaching toxicity of Cr and Pb. Moreover, when the treatment temperature exceeded 1000 °C, the co-thermal treated sample exhibited low concentrations of dynamically leached Cr, Pb, and Zn, indicating that these heavy metals were successful detoxified. Thermodynamic analyses and phase transformation results suggested that the formation of spinel and the gradual disappearance of chromium dioxide in the presence of Fe-containing hazardous wastes contributed to the solidification of chromium. Additionally, the efficient detoxification of Pb and Zn was attributed to their volatilization and entry into the liquid phase during the co-thermal treatment process. Therefore, this study sets an excellent example of the co-thermal treatment of hazardous wastes and the control of heavy metal pollution during the treatment process.
Mineral phase transition characteristics and its effects on the stabilization of heavy metals in industrial hazardous wastes incineration (IHWI) fly ash via microwave-assisted hydrothermal treatment

Abstract:Toxic heavy metals in industrial hazardous waste incineration (IHWI) fly ash can be effectively stabilized by using microwave-assisted hydrothermal technology. However, few works have focused on the relationship between mineralogical conversion and stability of heavy metals of fly ash during hydrothermal process. This study investigated the effect of mineral phase transition process on the stabilization and migration behavior of heavy metals in IHWI fly ash using coal fly ash as silicon‑aluminum additive. Mineral composition analysis reveals that after microwave-assisted hydrothermal treatment (MAHT) of IHWI fly ash, zeolite-like minerals (e.g., tobermorite, katoite and sodalite), secondary aluminosilicate minerals (e.g., prehnite and anorthite) and other newly-formed minerals (e.g., wollastonite, pectolite and larnite) were found. The leaching concentrations of heavy metals (Cr, Ni, Cu, Zn, Cd and Pb) in IHWI fly ash decrease sharply after MAHT with the most obvious decreases in Cu, Pb and Zn. Spearman correlation analysis show significantly negative correlation between the content of zeolite-like minerals and the leaching concentrations of most heavy metals (e.g., Ni, Cu, Zn, Cd and Pb). These results suggest that the immobilization effects of heavy metals in IHWI fly ash can be effectively enhanced by promoting the formation of zeolite-like minerals during the MAHT. This study is expected to further promote the development of IHWI fly ash harmless treatment technology.

Abstract:During the thermal treatment of municipal solid waste incinerators (MSWI) fly ashes (FA), the fusion characteristics, kinetics, and phase transition are the theoretical basis on heavy metals solidification improvement and energy consumption reduction. In this study, the thermal behavior of MSWI FA from two typical furnaces in China, i.e., grate furnaces (GF) and circulating fluidized bed (CFB), are systematically investigated. The results show that FA melting can be divided into five stages but with different positions and areas of weightlessness peaks between two types of FA. We identify four kinetic models from which to obtain the apparent activation energy and pre-exponential factor during the melting transition. The apparent activation energy of GF FA ranges from 466 to 1016.2 kJ/mol, which is generally higher than that of CFB FA (380.1–636.6 kJ/mol). The weightlessness rate of GF FA is approximately three times that of CFB FA because of its high chloride load. Silicon dioxide (SiO2) in FA is prone to react with other compounds to form low-melting-temperature minerals at 1100 °C, such as Ca2MgSi2O7. Therefore, the fusion temperatures of CFB FA with a higher content of SiO2 are about 150 °C lower than that of GF FA, which is consistent with the theory that the fusion temperature of FA is at its lowest when the ratio of basic to acid oxides approaches 1. Finally, SiO2–CaO–Al2O3 ternary phase diagrams, ash fusion temperatures, and several fouling and slagging indices are verified to predict the ash fusion characteristics of MSWI FA.

Abstract:Reuse of the fly ash from the municipal solid waste incinerator (MSWI) is a policy of Taiwan EPA. However, the fly ash is often classified as a hazardous waste and cannot be reused directly because the concentrations of heavy metals exceed the TCLP regulations. The main objective of this study is to investigate the continuous sintering behavior of fly ash with a rotary kiln and seek a solution to reduce the concentrations of heavy metal to an acceptable value. The partitions of the heavy metals in the process are also considered. The results of TCLP showed that among the metals of Cr, Cd, Cu and Pb, only the concentrations of Pb in raw fly ash exceeded the regulation. At sintering temperatures of 700, 800 and 900 degrees C, the concentration of Pb decreased in sintering products, however, the concentration of Pb still exceeded the limitation at 700 and 800 degrees C. Additionally, the water-washing was used to pre-treat the fly ash before sintering process. The washing treatment effectively reduced the leaching concentrations of Pb to agree the regulations. Therefore, water-washing followed by a sintering treatment is an available process for detoxifying the fly ash of MSWI.

Abstract:Thermal treatment could effectively realize the detoxification of heavy metals in municipal solid waste incineration (MSWI) fly ash through the approach of removal or stabilization process. To lower the operating temperature and suppress the evaporation of heavy metals, a molten salts (NaCl-CaCl2) thermal treatment method was proposed for the detoxification of heavy metals from MSWI fly ash at a relatively mild condition (600/800 °C). The fate of heavy metals during the heating process and their stabilization properties in the remained ash slag after molten salts thermal treatment were investigated. The results showed that, compared with the traditional thermal treatment, heavy metals were more easily chlorinated by the means of molten salts thermal treatment. The well distributed chloride in molten salts facilitated the direct chlorination of PbO/CdO. Furthermore, Al2O3 in ash enhanced the indirect chlorination of CuO/PbO/CdO, except for ZnO. In contrast, SiO2 showed better performance in promoting the indirect chlorination of heavy metal oxides. Meanwhile, some Zn2+ was precipitated from molten salts as Si/Al-Zn composite oxides through the interactions with ash containing Si/Al oxides. On the other hand, the dissolved heavy metals in molten salts showed a good thermal stability during the thermal treatment. The volatilization fractions of all detected heavy metals were less than 5%. After the molten salts thermal treatment, heavy metals in the ash slag were well stabilized and the amount of heavy metals leached was significantly lower than that from the raw fly ash.

Abstract:Municipal solid waste incineration fly ash is a typical hazardous waste, contaminated both by dioxins and heavy metals. Supercritical water oxidation (SCWO) has proved to be a promising treatment technique for many toxic waste streams, including fly ash. The destruction of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs) and the stabilisation of heavy metals are investigated in the present work. The concentration of the 17 toxic PCDD/Fs in fly ash decreases from 30.2 to 3.2ng/g; its degradation yield attains 90 %, at 500 degrees C with an oxidant to water ratio of 2:3; the corresponding destruction efficiency reaches only 83 %, however, when based on toxic equivalency units. Dechlorination of PCDD/Fs is promoted by rising reaction temperature and amount of oxidant (hydrogen peroxide). Analysis of the seventeen toxic congeners indicates that the degradation efficiency of PCDDs is higher than that of PCDFs. In addition, the leaching of Cr, Mn, Zn and Pb from fly ash decreases dramatically after SCWO treatment: allleachate concentrations determined according to the toxicity characteristic leaching procedure meet the regulatory limits required for landfill. A sequential extraction procedure is used to evaluate the speciation of heavy metals in raw and treated ash; the heavy metals in exchangeable and organic matter fractions are converted into more stable forms, e.g., oxides and residual fractions. X-ray diffraction analysis reveals that crystalline CaSiO3 is newly formed in the treated ash, confirming the stabilisation of heavy metals by means of complex processes specific to each metal.

Abstract:Thermal treatment is a promising treatment technology of municipal solid waste incineration (MSWI) fly ash because of its detoxication and volume reduction. However, the relationship between immobilization of heavy metals and mineral transformation during thermal treatment remains unclear. In this study, the immobilization mechanism of Zn during thermal treatment process of MSWI fly ash was investigated by experiment and calculation. The results show that addition of SiO2 facilitates transition of dominant minerals from melilite to anorthite during sintering, increases liquid content during melting and improves liquid polymerization degree during vitrification. ZnCl2 tends to be physically encapsulated by liquid phase, and ZnO is mainly chemically fixed into minerals at high temperature. Increase in both liquid content and liquid polymerization degree favors the physical encapsulation of ZnCl2. The decreasing order of chemical fixation ability of minerals to ZnO is spinel > melilite > liquid > anorthite. To better immobilize Zn during sintering and vitrification process chemical composition of MSWI fly ash should be located in melilite and anorthite primary phases of pseudo-ternary phase diagram, respectively. The results are helpful to understand immobilization mechanism of heavy metals and avoid volatilization of heavy metals during thermal treatment process of MSWI fly ash.

Abstract:AbstractMunicipal solid waste incineration (MSWI) fly ash treated with toxicity metals holds enormous potential for constructure use to economize on resources and protect environment. To reach the goal, this study investigated the effects of sintering conditions on leaching characteristic of heavy metals for MSWI fly ash, especially Cr, Cr6+, Ag, and Ba, with the orthogonal and Box-Benhnken design experiment, which considered grain size (D50 = 30, 45, and 60 μm), fluxing agent (CaO = 0, 2.5, and 5%), setting temperature (1000, 1050, and 1100 °C), and setting time (120, 180, and 240 min). The mechanism of immobilization for heavy metals was also discussed through the analyses of morphological characterizations, mineral phases, chemical composition, and leaching values of metals. The results indicated that changing grain size and adding fluxing agent of CaO have positive influence on reducing the leaching of heavy metals compared with direct sintering. The leaching values of As, Pb, Cd, Cu, Ni, Zn, Mn, Hg, Be, Se, and fluoride are not detected after sintering. Ideal sintering condition with desirability of 1.00 was predicted and optimized by the Box-Benhnken response method in grain size of D50 = 30 μm, fluxing agent of CaO = 5%, setting temperature = 1050 °C, and setting time = 180 min, which immobilized Cr, Cr6+, Ag, and Ba lower than the limitation of standards. Actual experiment was consistent with numerical optimization. Furthermore, the model of leaching characteristic for heavy metals in MSWI fly ash was established with the discussion on species distribution of heavy metals to better explain the mechanism during sintering.Graphical abstract

Abstract:Melting treatment has emerged as a promising technology for managing municipal solid waste incineration (MSWI) fly ash owing to its advantageous features of effective detoxification and volume reduction. The melting treatment of MSWI fly ash involves the immobilization of heavy metals by crystals and liquid phase. Herein, the immobilization mechanism of heavy metals (Cu, Pb and Cd) by the crystals and the liquid phase was investigated using melting experiments, thermodynamic calculations and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Results demonstrate that the immobilization of heavy metals is influenced by a combination of factors: the reaction of heavy metals, physical encapsulation ability of the liquid phase and chemical fixation ability of both the crystals and the liquid phase. An increase in the content of SiO2 and Al2O3 promotes the conversion of heavy metals oxides into heavy metals chlorides. Furthermore, an increase in the content and polymerization degree of the liquid phase facilitates the physical encapsulation of heavy metals chlorides. The chemical fixation ability of the crystals and the liquid phase differs for Cu and Pb, while Cd cannot be immobilized through chemical fixation. To enhance the immobilization of heavy metals during melting treatment, the chemical composition of MSWI fly ash should be adjusted within the anorthite region of the ternary phase diagram. This study provides valuable insights into the immobilization mechanism of heavy metals by the crystals and the liquid phase during the melting treatment of MSWI fly ash.

Abstract:The disposal of fly ash generated during municipal solid waste incineration (MSWI) may pose a significant risk to the environment due to the possible leaching of hazardous pollutants, such as toxic metals. Sintering technology attracted more attention than the vitrification process because of its low energy needed. Generally, a preliminary washing treatment of raw fly ash with water was necessary for this sintering technology. This study investigated the composition and morphology of raw fly ash (RFA) and washed fly ash (WFA) at different sintering temperatures, and examined the newly formed minerals during sintering. Toxicity characteristic leaching procedure (TCLP) tests were carried out to investigate the effect of the washing treatment and sintering process on the leaching performance of heavy metals in fly ash. Results showed that, with an increase of sintering temperature more complex aluminosilicates were formed; the incorporation of Mg, Fe and Pb into the aluminosilicates occurred during the sintering process at higher temperatures (800 and 900°C). The washing treatment reduced the leachable concentration of Cd, Pb and Ni, but increased that of Cr. A CaCrO4 compound was considered as a potential soluble species.
Thermodynamic and Experimental Study on Migration Characteristics of Heavy Metals during the Melting Process of Incineration Fly Ash

Abstract:The migration characteristics of heavy metals during the melting process were one of the key factors for safe treatment and resource utilization of incineration fly ash (IFA). In this paper, the material variation of heavy metal elements of Pb, Zn, Cu, and Fe during the IFA melting process was simulated by HSC 6.0 chemistry software. The effects of melting temperature, alkalinity, atmosphere, chlorine content of raw materials, and an iron bath added to the migration characteristics, and phase transformation of selected heavy metal elements was investigated. The simulation results were also verified by experimental results. The results showed that, with the increase in temperature, the gas phase proportion of Pb, Zn, Cu, and Fe gradually increased. The alkalinity had little effect on the proportion of elements Fe and Cu in the liquid slag (LS) phase and the element Pb in the gas phase, but the increase in alkalinity could inhibit the proportion of element Zn in the gas phase. Zn mainly existed in the gas phase, and the atmosphere had little influence on the distribution of Zn. In reducing atmosphere (RA), elements Fe and Cu, which entered the liquid metal (LM) phase, were promoted, while the volatilization of Pb was restrained, which was conducive to the recovery of heavy metals. The melting process of IFA with water-washing and dechlorination had an inhibitory effect on the volatilization of Zn and Pb, but had little effect on Fe and Cu. The proportion of element Zn in the gas phase reduced from 85.84% to 9.89%. With the iron bath added in the IFA melting process, 98.42% of Cu and 82.28% of Pb entered the LM phase as metal simple substances, and 76.3% of Zn entered the gas phase as Zn (g) and ZnCl2 (g). In the experimental verification, the distribution proportions of the four heavy metals in the gas phase, LS phase, and LM phase were consistent with the simulation results.

Abstract:Incineration is widely adopted in municipal solid waste management, which produces large amounts of municipal solid waste incineration (MSWI) fly ash. The harmless treatment of MSWI fly ash requires the appropriate disposal of heavy metals and dioxins that are enriched in fly ash. This review summarizes recently developed harmless disposal methods for MSWI fly ash including solidification/stabilization, thermal treatment, and separation/extraction. In addition, we discuss heavy metal and dioxin fixation, and the removal capacity of fly ash via solidification/stabilization (including cement solidification, chemical stabilization, hydrothermal processes, and mechano-chemical methods), thermal treatment (including sintering, fuel-burning, or electric melting/vitrification), and separation/extraction (including water-washing, chemical reagent leaching, biological leaching, electrodialysis separation, chemical reagent extraction, and nanomaterials extraction). The advantages and disadvantages of different harmless treatment methods are compared and future research prospects and suggestions are summarized. This review provides general guidelines for the harmless treatment of MSWI fly ash in the future.

Analysis of pollution characteristics of fly ash from municipal solid waste incineration

Abstract:In recent years,incineration disposure of municipal solid waste has been used widely due to its obvious volume reduction,germfree treatment and resource reuse.However,the fly ash derived from municipal solid waste incinerator(MSWI) contains high level of water soluble salts and heavy metals,and if treated inadvertently,it can bring secondary pollution to the environment.In order to dispose the fly ash reasonably and effectively and provide scientific evidence for its resource reuse,characteristics of contaminants in it should be analyzed.In this study,the fly ash derived from municipal solid waste incinerator was classified by particle sizes.The content of water soluble salts and pH in the fly ash were measured.The concentrations of heavy metals in the classified fractions and their contributions to the total heavy metal in fly ash were studied.The results showed that the particle size distribution of fly ash was similar to normal distribution,and sizes of particles between 54 μm and 280 μm reached up to over 80 percent of the total,while sizes under 54 μm or over 280 μm only took made up small mass percentage,which were less than 3 percent or 15 percent,respectively.Fly ash was highly alkaline and its pH value was up to 12.The content of water soluble salts in the fly ash was very high and could be over 2%.The contents of volatile heavy metals in different particles of fly ash had relationship with the particle size,while those of semi-volatile and refractory heavy metals had no obvious relationship with the size.It indicated that the contribution of heavy metals in the middle-sized particles to the total was the highest.
