Abstract:Ultra-High Energy (UHE, $>$0.1\,PeV) $\gamma$-ray Astronomy is rapidly evolving into an expanding branch of the $\gamma$-ray astronomy with the surprising discovery of 12 PeVatrons and the detection of a handful of photons above 1 PeV. Nearly all known celestial object types that have emissions in the TeV band are found also emitting UHE photons. UHE $\gamma$-rays have a well-defined horizon inside our galaxy due to the absorption of infrared and cosmic microwave backgrounds in the universe. With the last 30 years, traditional cosmic ray (CR) detection techniques allow the detection of UHE $\gamma$-rays, and opened up the last observation window. For leptonic sources, UHE radiation is in the deep Klein-Nishina regime which is largely suppressed. Therefore UHE $\gamma$-ray detection will help to locate and identify hadronic radiation sources, tracing the historic pursuit for the origin of CRs around the knee of the spectrum. The Crab Nebula is again the focus of attention with measured photon emissions above 1\,PeV. In the absence of hadronic processes, this may indicate the existence of an extreme accelerator of e$^+$/e$^-$. Utilization of the CR extensive air shower detection techniques broadens the field of view of the source observations, enabling the measurement of UHE radiation surrounding the sources. These observations can probe the particle propagation inside and outside the accelerators and the subsequent injection/escape into the interstellar medium.

An extremely energetic cosmic ray observed by a surface detector array

Abstract:Cosmic rays are energetic charged particles from extraterrestrial sources, with the highest energy events thought to come from extragalactic sources. Their arrival is infrequent, so detection requires instruments with large collecting areas. In this work, we report the detection of an extremely energetic particle recorded by the surface detector array of the Telescope Array experiment. We calculate the particle's energy as 244 +- 29 (stat.) +51,-76 (syst.) exa-electron volts (~40 joules). Its arrival direction points back to a void in the large-scale structure of the Universe. Possible explanations include a large deflection by the foreground magnetic field, an unidentified source in the local extragalactic neighborhood or an incomplete knowledge of particle physics.

Abstract:Extreme Energy Cosmic Rays, EECRs -- cosmic rays with energies beyond the GZK cutoff (i.e. greater than 100 EeV) are scarce. Only a few of such events have been detected by air shower experiments and the nature of the primary particles are still unknown. Individual EECRs sources become more prominent, relative to the background, as the horizon diminishes. We show that an event-by-event, composition-dependent observatory would allow us to limit the character of the sources and learn about the intervening magnetic fields, as the deflections in the intervening Galactic and extragalactic magnetic fields depend on the nature of the particle. A major goal here is to provide a methodology to distinguish between steady and transient sources.

Abstract:The origin of cosmic rays is one of the major unresolved astrophysical questions. In particular, the highest energy cosmic rays observed possess macroscopic energies and their origin is likely to be associated with the most energetic processes in the Universe. Their existence triggered a flurry of theoretical explanations ranging from conventional shock acceleration to particle physics beyond the Standard Model and processes taking place at the earliest moments of our Universe. Furthermore, many new experimental activities promise a strong increase of statistics at the highest energies and a combination with $\gamma-$ray and neutrino astrophysics will put strong constraints on these theoretical models. Detailed Monte Carlo simulations indicate that charged ultra-high energy cosmic rays can also be used as probes of large scale magnetic fields whose origin may open another window into the very early Universe. We give an overview over this quickly evolving research field.

Abstract:Ultra-high energy cosmic rays (UHECRs) have been studied with the data of the Pierre Auger Observatory for more than fifteen years. An essential feature of the Observatory is its hybrid design: UHECRs are detected through the observation of the associated extensive air showers (EASs) with different and complementary techniques. The analyses of the multi-detector data have enabled high-statistics and high-precision studies of the UHECR energy spectrum, mass composition and distribution of arrival directions. The resulting science of UHECRs is summarized in this contribution. While no discrete source of UHECRs has been identified so far, the extragalactic origin of the particles has been recently confirmed from the arrival directions above 8~EeV, and the ring is closing around nearby astrophysical sites at higher energies. Also, the established upper limits on fluxes of UHE neutrinos and photons have implications on multi-messenger studies and beyond-the-Standard-Model (BSM) physics.

Abstract:Recently the Telescope Array collaboration reported an observation of cosmic ray event with very high energy 244 EeV (2.44 × 10 20 eV). Importantly, the event is hard to correlate with the matter distribution in the local Universe, even after taking into account deflections in magnetic fields. This implies that the event is likely a nucleus with a large charge. An attenuation length of the nucleus of such a high energy in intergalactic space is quite small, therefore its source should be relatively close to our Galaxy. Using these arguments we derive a new upper bound on a distance to the closest ultra-high energy cosmic ray (UHECR) source and a lower bound on the UHECR source number density in general. The distance to the closest source should not exceed 5 Mpc at 95% C.L. and the 95% C.L. lower-bound on the sources number density is ρ > 1.0 × 10 -4 Mpc -3 . The number density of UHECR sources emitting heavy nuclei is constrained for the first time.

Abstract:A fundamental question that can be answered in the next decade is: WHAT IS THE ORIGIN OF THE HIGHEST ENERGY COSMIC PARTICLES? The discovery of the sources of the highest energy cosmic rays will reveal the workings of the most energetic astrophysical environments in the recent universe. Candidate sources range from the birth of compact objects to explosions related to gamma-ray bursts or generated around supermassive black holes in active galactic nuclei. In addition to beginning a new era of high-energy astrophysics, the study of ultra-high energy cosmic rays will constrain the structure of the Galactic and extragalactic magnetic fields. The propagation of these particles from source to Earth also probes the cosmic background radiation and gives insight into particle interactions at orders of magnitude higher energy than can be achieved in terrestrial laboratories. Next generation observatories designed to study the highest energy cosmic rays will have unprecedented sensitivity to ultra-high energy photons and neutrinos, which will further illuminate the workings of the universe at the most extreme energies. For this challenge to be met during the 2010-2020 decade, a significant increase in the integrated exposure to cosmic rays above 6 1019 eV will be necessary. The technical capabilities for answering this open question are at hand and the time is ripe for exploring Charged Particle Astronomy.

Abstract:We investigate the propagation of ultraheavy (UH) nuclei as ultrahigh-energy cosmic rays (UHECRs). We show that their energy loss lengths at $\lesssim300$~EeV are significantly longer than those of protons and intermediate-mass nuclei, and that the highest-energy cosmic rays with energies beyond $\sim100$ EeV, including the Amaterasu particle, may originate from such UH-UHECRs. We derive constraints on the contribution of UH-UHECR sources, and find that they are consistent with energy generation rate densities of UHECRs from collapsars and neutron star mergers.

Abstract:The conjecture that ultra-high-energy cosmic rays (UHECRs) are actually strangelets is discussed. Besides the reason that strangelets can do as cosmic rays beyond the Greisen-Zatsepin-Kuzmin-cutoff, another argument to support the conjecture is addressed by the study of formation of Te V-scale microscopic black holes when UHECRs bombarding bare strange stars. It is proposed that the exotic quark surface of a bare strange star could be an effective astro-laboratory in the investigations of the extra dimensions and of the detection of ultra-high-energy neutrino fluxes. The flux of neutrinos (and other point-like particles) with energy larger than 2.3 × 1020 eV could be expected to be smaller than 10-26 cm-2 s-1 if there are two extra spatial dimensions.

Abstract:Cosmic-rays with energies exceeding 10^{19} eV are referred to as Ultra High Energy Cosmic Rays (UHECRs). The sources of these particles and their acceleration mechanism are unknown, and for many years have been the issue of much debate. The first part of this review describes the main constraints, that are implied by UHECR observations on the properties of candidate UHECR sources, the candidate sources, and the related main open questions. In order to address the challenges of identifying the UHECR sources and of probing the physical mechanisms driving them, a "multi-messenger" approach will most likely be required, combining electromagnetic, cosmic-ray and neutrino observations. The second part of the review is devoted to a discussion of high energy neutrino astronomy. It is shown that detectors, which are currently under construction, are expected to reach the effective mass required for the detection of high energy extra-Galactic neutrino sources, and may therefore play a key role in the near future in resolving the main open questions. The detection of high energy neutrinos from extra-Galactic sources will not only provide constraints on the identity and underlying physics of UHECR sources, but may furthermore provide information on fundamental neutrino properties.

Abstract:We reported on the first detection of the ultra-high-energy diffuse gamma rays from the Galactic plane [1]. The highest energy of the detected gamma rays is estimated to be unprecedentedly high, nearly 1 PeV. It is reasonable to expect that the detected gamma rays are produced by the hadronic interaction between cosmic rays escaping from the most powerful Galactic sources "PeVatrons" and the interstellar gas in the Galaxy. This experimental evidence is an important milestone to solve a long-standing mystery of cosmic-ray origins.

Abstract:Here we discuss the latest developments in the debate, where the ultrahigh energy cosmic ray particles come from. In this brief review, we emphasize the predictions that necessarily follow from the various concepts proposed. We discuss both sources and propagation, and spend some space on the by now most conservative model, giant radio galaxies and their hot spots and jets, because it allows more steps in the reasoning to be checked, and is more tightly constrained than any other model. It has survived about forty years of debate already. We summarize the task ahead of us at the end, including the development of new technologies to observe ultra high energy cosmic rays, e.g., with the radio emission of air showers, which may lead to an alternative to the fluorescence detectors with their small duty cycle. Due to HiRes, AUGER, and the plans for EUSO, the future is bright, and the ultra high energy cosmic ray particles may yet allow us to explore new physics.

Abstract:Our Universe is described jointly by Einstein's relativity principle and thequantum principle; there the existence of the smallest units of matter, such aselectrons, neutrinos, quarks, and photons, is well established and the smallestunits of matter are described by the Standard Model. Based on these, we have aclear picture for the propagation of ultra high energy cosmic rays (UHECR's),for energies greater than E > 10^13 eV but less than E < 10^26 eV,in the cosmic medium of the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) and of the cosmicbackground neutrinos (CBν's). We find that the CMB plays a pivot role inthis energy range, so that the observed "knee(s)" and the "ankle" could beunderstood in reasonable terms. What we might observe at the energy near10^25 eV', the so-called "W^± bursts" or "Z^0 bursts", is brieflydiscussed. Meanwhile, in the early Universe, the CBν's, in view of the tinyneutrino mass, gave rise to the clustering phenomenon, resulting in a neutrinohalo attached to each visual ordinary-matter object, such as the Earth, theSun, and stars - with the PeV neutrinos near the surface of the Fermi-Diracsphere of the neutrino halo of the Earth playing the most fundamental role.

While the sources producing UHECRs are still unknown, the Pierre Auger Observatory has detected a large-scale dipole anisotropy in the arrival directions of cosmic rays above 8 EeV. In this work, we explore whether resolved gamma-ray sources can reproduce the Auger dipole. We use various Fermi Large Area Telescope catalogs as sources of cosmic rays in CRPropa simulations. We find that in all cases, the simulated dipole has an amplitude significantly larger than that measured by Auger, even when considering large extragalactic magnetic field strengths and optimistic source weighting schemes. Our result implies that the resolved gamma-ray sources are insufficient to account for the population of sources producing the highest-energy cosmic rays, and there must exist a population of UHECR sources that lack gamma-ray emission or are unresolved by the current-generation gamma-ray telescopes.

Abstract:We report on the highest energy photons from the Crab Nebula observed by the Tibet air shower array with the underground water-Cherenkov-type muon detector array. Based on the criterion of a muon number measured in an air shower, we successfully suppress 99.92% of the cosmic-ray background events with energies E>100 TeV. As a result, we observed 24 photonlike events with E>100 TeV against 5.5 background events, which corresponds to a 5.6σ statistical significance. This is the first detection of photons with E>100 TeV from an astrophysical source.
