Abstract:The Large High Altitude Air Shower Observatory (LHAASO) is one of the most sensitive gamma-ray detector arrays currently operating at TeV and PeV energies. Recently the LHAASO experiment detected ultra-high-energy (UHE; E-gamma greater than or similar to 100 TeV) photon emissions up to 1.4 PeV from twelve astrophysical gamma-ray sources. We point out that the detection of cosmic photons at such energies can constrain the photon self-decay motivated by superluminal Lorentz symmetry violation (LV) to a higher level, thus can put strong constraints to certain LV frameworks. Meanwhile, we suggest that the current observation of the PeV-scale photon with LHAASO may provide hints to permit a subluminal type of Lorentz violation in the proximity of the Planckian regime, and may be compatible with the light speed variation at the scale of 3.6 x 10(17) GeV recently suggested from gamma-ray burst (GRB) time delays. We further propose detecting PeV photons coming from extragalactic sources with future experiments, based on LV-induced threshold anomalies of e(+)e(-) pair-production, as a crucial test of subluminal Lorentz violation. We comment that these observations are consistent with a D-brane/string-inspired quantum-gravity framework, the space-time foam model.

Abstract:It has been reported that the Large High Altitude Air Shower Observatory (LHAASO) observed very high energy photons from GRB 221009A, with the highest energy reaching 18 TeV. We find that observation of such high energy photons is quite nontrivial since extragalactic background light could absorb these photons severely and the flux is too weak to be observed. Therefore we discuss a potential mechanism for us to observe these photons, and suggest that Lorentz invariance violation induced threshold anomaly of the process yy -> e-e+ provides a candidate to explain this phenomenon.

Abstract:From special relativity, photon annihilation process γγ→e+e− prevents cosmic photons with energies above a threshold to propagate a long distance in cosmic space due to their annihilation with low energy cosmic background photons. However, modifications of the photon dispersion relation from Lorentz invariance violation (LIV) can cause novel phenomena beyond special relativity to happen. In this paper, we point out that these phenomena include optical transparency, threshold reduction and reappearance of ultra-high energy photons in cosmic space. The recent observation of near and above PeV photon events by the LHAASO Collaboration reveals the necessity to consider the threshold anomalies. Future observations of above threshold photons from extragalactic sources can testify LIV properties of photons.

Strong constraints on Lorentz violation using new $γ$-ray observations around PeV

Abstract:The tiny modification of dispersion relation induced by Lorentz violation (LV) is an essential issue in quantum gravity (QG) theories, which can be magnified into significant effects when dealing with astrophysical observations at high energy and long propagation distance. LV would lead to photon decay at high energies, therefore, observations of high-energy photons could constrain LV or even QG theories. The Large High Altitude Air Shower Observatory (LHAASO) is the most sensitive gamma-array instrument currently operating above 100 TeV. Recently, LHAASO reported the detection of 12 sources above 100 TeV with maximum photon energy exceeding 1 PeV. According to these observations, the most stringent restriction is achieved in this paper, i.e., limiting the LV energy scale to $1.7\times10^{33} $ eV, which is over 139,000 times that of the Planck energy and achieve an improvement of about 1.9 orders of magnitude over previous limits.

Constraint on Lorentz invariance violation from Vela pulsar

Abstract:The High Energy Stereoscopic System (H.E.S.S) Collaboration reported the discovery of a novel radiation component from the Vela pulsar by their Cherenkov telescopes. It is of great importance that gamma rays with energies of at least 20~TeV are recorded unexpectedly. The H.E.S.S Collaboration argued that such results may challenge the state-of-the-art models for the high-energy emission of pulsars. We point out in this work that these results also provide a unique opportunity to constrain certain Lorentz invariance violation parameters, leading to the realization of studying Lorentz invariance violation by using gamma-ray pulsars. The Lorentz invariance violation scale is constrained at the level of $E_{\mathrm{LV,}1}> 1.66\times 10^{17} \rm GeV$ for the linear scenario, and $E_{\mathrm{LV,}2}>3.53\times 10^{10} \rm GeV$ for the quadratic scenario. We anticipate that digging into the detailed features of the data of the Vela pulsar and analyzing potentially more very-high-energy photon data from pulsars in the future would improve the constraints on Lorentz invariance violation.

Abstract:In some quantum gravity theories, a foamy structure of space-time may lead to Lorentz invariance violation (LIV). As the most energetic explosions in the Universe, gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) provide an effect way to probe quantum gravity effects. In this paper, we use the continuous spectra of 20 short GRBs detected by the Swift satellite to give a conservative lower limit of quantum gravity energy scale MQG. Due to the LIV effect, photons with different energy have different velocities. This will lead to the delayed arrival of high energy photons relative to low energy ones. Based on the fact that the LIV-induced time delay cannot be longer than the duration of a GRB, we present the most conservative estimate of the quantum gravity energy scales from 20 short GRBs. The strictest constraint, MQG > 5.05×10 14 GeV in the linearly corrected case, is from GRB 140622A. Our constraint on MQG, although not as tight as previous results, is the safest and most reliable so far.

Abstract:The Large High Altitude Air Shower Observatory (LHAASO) recently reported the detection of gamma-ray emissions with energies up to 1.1 PeV from the Crab Nebula. Using the absence of vacuum Cherenkov effect by inverse-Compton electrons, we improve previous bounds to linear-order Lorentz invariance violation (LV) in the dispersion relations of electrons by 10^4 times. We show that the LV effect on electrons is severely constrained, compatible with certain type of LV as expected by some models of quantum gravity (QG), such as the string/D-brane inspired space-time foam. We argue that such models are supported by the Crab Nebula constraints from the LHAASO observations, as well as various LV phenomenologies for photons to date.

Abstract:The Large High Altitude Air Shower Observatory (LHAASO) is one of the most sensitive gamma-ray detector arrays, whose ultrahigh-energy (UHE) work bands not only help to study the origin and acceleration mechanism of UHE cosmic rays, but also provide the opportunity to test fundamental physics concepts such as Lorentz symmetry. LHAASO directly observes the 1.42 PeV highest-energy photon. By adopting the synchrotion self-Compton model, LHAASO also suggests that the 1.12 PeV high-energy photon from Crab Nebula corresponds to a 2.3 PeV high-energy electron. We study the 1.42 PeV photon decay and the 2.3 PeV electron decay to perform a joint analysis on photon and electron two-dimensional Lorentz violation (LV) parameter plane. Our analysis is systematic and comprehensive, and we naturally get the strictest constraints from merely considering photon LV effect in photon decay and electron LV effect in electron decay. Revisiting Lorentz invariance violation from GRB 221009A

Abstract:As a potential consequence of Lorentz invariance violation~(LIV), threshold anomalies open a window to study LIV. Recently the Large High Altitude Air Shower Observatory~(LHAASO) reported that more than 5000 photons from GRB 221009A have been observed with energies above 500~GeV and up to $18~\text{TeV}$. In the literature, it is suggested that this observation may have tension with the standard model result because extragalactic background light~(EBL) can prevent photons around 18~TeV from reaching the earth and that LIV induced threshold anomalies might be able to explain the observation. In this work we further study this proposal with more detailed numerical calculation for different LIV scales and redshifts of the sources. We find that GRB 221009A is a rather unique opportunity to search LIV, and a LIV scale $E_\text{LIV} \lesssim E_\text{Planck}\approx 1.22\times 10^{19}~\text{GeV}$ is feasible to the observation of GRB 221009A on 9 October, 2022.

Abstract:The Large High Altitude Air Shower Observatory (LHAASO) has reported the detection of a large number of multi-TeV-scale photon events also including several PeV-scale gamma-ray-photon events with energy as high as 1.4 PeV. The possibility that some of these events may have extragalactic origins is not yet excluded. Here we propose a mechanism for the traveling of very-high-energy and ultra-high-energy photons based upon the axion-photon conversion scenario, which allows extragalactic above-threshold photons to be detected by observers on the Earth. We show that the axion-photon conversation can serve as an alternative mechanism, besides the threshold anomaly due to Lorentz invariance violation, for the very-high-energy features of the newly observed gamma ray burst GRB 221009A.
Observability of the very-high-energy emission from GRB 221009A

Abstract:The LHAASO Collaboration detected the gamma ray burst GRB 221009A at energies above $500 \, {\rm GeV}$ with a tail extending up to $18 \, \rm TeV$, whose spectral analysis has presently been performed up to $7 \, \rm TeV$ for the lower energy instrument LHAASO-WCDA only, with no indication of a cutoff. Soon thereafter, Carpet-2 at Baksan Neutrino Observatory reported the observation of an air shower consistent with being caused by a photon of energy $251 \, {\rm TeV}$ from the same GRB. Given the source redshift $z=0.151$, the expected attenuation due to the extragalactic background light is very severe so that these detections have proven very hard to explain. In this Letter, we show that the existence of axion-like-particles (ALPs) with mass $m_a \simeq (10^{-11}-10^{-7}) \, {\rm eV}$ and two-photon coupling $g_{a \gamma \gamma} \simeq (3-5) \times 10^{-12} \, {\rm GeV}^{- 1}$ strongly reduce the optical depth of TeV photons, thus explaining the observations. Our ALPs meet all available constraints, are consistent with two previous hints at their existence and are good candidates for cold dark matter. Moreover, we show that Lorentz Invariance Violation (LIV) can explain the Carpet-2 result but not the LHAASO observations.

Comprehensive analysis on photon-electron Lorentz-violation parameter plane

Abstract:Large High Altitude Air Shower Observatory~(LHAASO) opens the window of ultra-high-energy~(UHE) photon detection, broadens the path of testing basic physical concept such as Lorentz symmetry, and brings possibility of potential high-energy physical phenomenon research such as photon decay and electron decay. Currently, the UHE photons from LHAASO observation set strict constraints on photon and electron Lorentz symmetry violation~(LV) effects. To obtain a global impression of the photon-electron LV parameter plane, we make a detailed analysis for photon decay and electron decay. Our discussion gives the corresponding decay thresholds and energy-momentum distributions in different LV parameter configurations. We get corresponding constraints on photon LV parameter, electron LV parameter and the photon-electron LV parameter plane from LHAASO observation. For the space allowed for LV effect, that is beyond relativity, we also provide corresponding boundaries from LHAASO observation.

Abstract:Lorentz violation (LV) is predicted by some quantum gravity (QG) candidates, wherein the canonical energy-momentum dispersion relation, $E^2=p^2+m^2$, is modified. Consequently, new phenomenons beyond the standard model are predicted. Especially, the presence of LV highly affects the propagation of astrophysical photons with very high energies from distant galaxies. In this paper, we review the updating theoretical and experimental results on this topic. We classify the effects into three categories: (i) time lags between photons with different energies; (ii) a cutoff of photon flux above the threshold energy of photon decay, $\gamma \rightarrow e^++e^-$; (iii) new patterns in the spectra of multi-TeV photons and EeV photons, due to the absorption of background lights. As we can see, the details of LV effects on astrophysical photons depend heavily on the "phase space" of LV parameters. From observational aspects, nowadays available and upcoming instruments can study these phenomenons hopefully, and shed light onto LV issues and QG theories. The most recent progresses and constraints on the ultra-high energy cosmic rays (UHECRs) are also fully discussed.
Lorentz Violation from Cosmological Objects with Very High Energy Photon Emissions

Abstract:Lorentz violation (LV) is predicted by some quantum gravity theories, wherephoton dispersion relation is modified, and the speed of light becomesenergy-dependent. Consequently, it results in a tiny time delay between highenergy photons and low energy ones. Very high energy (VHE) photon emissionsfrom cosmological distance can amplify these tiny LV effects into observablequantities. Here we analyze four VHE γ-ray bursts (GRBs) from Fermiobservations, and briefly review the constraints from three TeV flares ofactive galactic nuclei (AGNs) as well. One step further, we present a firstrobust analysis of VHE GRBs taking the intrinsic time lag caused by sourcesinto account, and give an estimate to quantum gravity energy ∼ 2 ×10^17 GeV for linear energy dependence, and ∼ 5 × 10^9 GeV forquadratic dependence. However, the statistics is not sufficient due to the lackof data, and further observational results are desired to constrain LV effectsbetter.

Abstract:The extension of the cosmic ray spectrum beyond 1 PeV (1 PeV = 10(15) eV) indicates the existence of particle accelerators operating as PeVatrons in the Milky Way. However, recent gamma-ray observations reveal that supernova remnants (SNRs), considered the major source of galactic cosmic rays, have difficulty in accelerating cosmic rays to PeV. Therefore, searching and identifying PeVatrons is crucial for understanding the origin of cosmic rays. The ultra-high-energy (UHE) gamma-ray observations will provide decisive evidence for such studies. Due to its high sensitivity in the UHE gamma-ray band, Large High Altitude Air Shower Observatory (LHAASO) would play a key role in the research on PeVatron. After running the 1/2 LHAASO-KM2A array, 12 UHE gamma-ray sources were detected. This paper summarizes the observation results and discusses the prospect of the full LHAASO array.
Testing Lorentz Invariance with Ultra High Energy Cosmic Ray Spectrum

Abstract:The GZK cutoff predicted at the Ultra High Energy Cosmic Ray (UHECR) spectrum as been observed by the HiRes and Auger experiments. The results put severe constraints on the effect of Lorentz Invariance Violation(LIV) which has been introduced to explain the absence of GZK cutoff indicated in the AGASA data. Assuming homogeneous source distribution with a single power law spectrum, we calculate the spectrum of UHECRs observed on Earth by taking the processes of photopion production, $e^+e^-$ pair production and adiabatic energy loss into account. The effect of LIV is also taken into account in the calculation. By fitting the HiRes monocular spectra and the Auger combined spectra, we show that the LIV parameter is constrained to $\xi=-0.8^{+3.2}_{-0.5}\times10^{-23}$ and $0.0^{+1.0}_{-0.4}\times10^{-23}$ respectively, which is well consistent with strict Lorentz Invariance up to the highest energy.

Abstract:The Large High Altitude Air Shower Observatory~(LHAASO) reported observation of photons with energies above 10~TeV from gamma-ray burst GRB 221009A. A suggestion was proposed that this result may contradict our knowledge of special relativity~(SR) and the standard model~(SM), according to which photons of about 10~TeV from such a distant object should be severely suppressed because of the absorption by extragalactic background light. As a result, a number of mechanisms have been proposed to solve this potential puzzle, including Lorentz invariance violation~(LIV). In this work, we perform a detailed numerical calculation and show the feasibility to constrain LIV of photons from the LHAASO observation of GRB 221009A quantitatively.

Abstract:Lorentz invariance violation~(LIV) can change the threshold behavior predicted by special relativity and cause threshold anomalies which affect the propagation of cosmic photons. In this work, we focus on the threshold anomaly effect on cosmic photon attenuations by extragalactic background light~(EBL) and discuss how to identify LIV from observations of very high energy~(VHE) photons propagated from long distance in the universe. We point out that the Large High Altitude Air Shower Observatory~(LHAASO), one of the most sensitive gamma-ray detector arrays currently operating at TeV and PeV energies, is an ideal facility for performing such LIV searching. We apply the proposed strategy to discuss the newly observed gamma-ray burst GRB 221009A to demonstrate the predictive ability of our suggestions.

Abstract:In some quantum gravity (QG) theories, Lorentz symmetry may be broken above the Planck scale. The Lorentz invariance violation (LIV) may induce observable effects at low energies and be detected at high energy astrophysical measurements. The Large High Altitude Air Shower Observatory (LHAASO) has detected the onset, rise, and decay phases of the afterglow of GRB 221009A, covering a wide energy range of photons approximately from 0.2 to 13 TeV. This observation provides an excellent opportunity to study the Lorentz invariance violation effect. In this study, we simultaneously utilize the data from the KM2A and WCDA detectors of LHAASO, and apply two event by event methods, namely the pair view method and maximum likelihood method, to investigate LIV. We obtain stringent constraints on the QG energy scale. For instance, through the maximum likelihood method, we determine the 95% confidence level lower limits to be E QG,1 > 14.7 (6.5) × 10 19 GeV for the subluminal (superluminal) scenario of n = 1, and E QG,2 > 12.0 (7.2) × 10 11 GeV for the subluminal (superluminal) scenario of n = 2. We find that the rapid rise and slow decay behaviors of the afterglow can impose strong constraints on the subluminal scenario, while the constraints are weaker for the superluminal scenario.
