Abstract:The main objective of this study was to determine the association of dry matter intake as percentage of body weight (DMI%BW) and energy balance (EB) prepartum (-21 d relative to parturition) and postpartum (28 d) with ketosis (n = 189) and clinical mastitis (n = 79). For this, DMI%BW and EB were the independent variables and ketosis and clinical mastitis were the dependent variables. A secondary objective was to evaluate prepartum DMI%BW and EB as predictors of ketosis and clinical mastitis. For this, ketosis and clinical mastitis were the independent variables and DMI%BW and EB were the dependent variables. Data from 476 cows from 9 experiments were compiled. Clinical mastitis was diagnosed if milk from 1 or more quarters was abnormal in color, viscosity, or consistency, with or without accompanying heat, pain, redness, or swelling of the quarter or generalized illness, during the first 28 d postpartum. Ketosis was defined as the presence of acetoacetate in urine that resulted in any color change [5 mg/dL (trace) or higher] in the urine test strip (Ketostix, Bayer, Leverkusen, Germany). Cows that developed ketosis had lesser DMI%BW and lesser EB on d -5, -3, -2, and -1 than cows without ketosis. Each 0.1-percentage point decrease in the average DMI%BW and each 1-Mcal decrease in the average of EB in the last 3 d prepartum increased the odds of having ketosis by 8 and 5%, respectively. Cut-offs for DMI%BW and EB during the last 3 d prepartum to predict ketosis were established and were ≤1.5%/d and ≤1.1 Mcal/d, respectively. Cows that developed ketosis had lesser postpartum DMI%BW and EB and greater energy-corrected milk (ECM) than cows without ketosis. Cows that developed clinical mastitis had lesser DMI%BW but similar prepartum EB compared with cows without clinical mastitis. Each 0.1-percentage point decrease in the average DMI%BW and each 1-Mcal decrease in the average EB in the last 3 d prepartum increased the odds of having clinical mastitis by 10 and 8%, respectively. The average DMI%BW and EB during the last 3 d prepartum produced significant cut-offs to predict clinical mastitis postpartum, which were ≤1.2%/d and ≤1.0 Mcal/d, respectively. Cows that developed clinical mastitis had lesser postpartum DMI%BW from d 3 to 15 and on d 17; greater EB on d 18, from d 21 to 23, and on d 26; and lesser ECM. The main limitation in this study is that the time-order of disease relative to DMI%BW and ECM is inconsistent such that postpartum outcomes were measured before and after disease, which was diagnosed at variable intervals after calving. In summary, measures of prepartum DMI were associated with and were predictors of ketosis and clinical mastitis postpartum, although the effect sizes were small.

Circadian regulation of c-fos expression in the suprachiasmatic pacemaker by light.

Abstract:The primary objective of this research was to examine expression of the immediate-early gene c-fos within the suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN) for evidence of circadian regulation by photic stimuli. In vivo and in vitro analyses demonstrate that photic signals have an inductive effect on c-fos expression in the SCN, but only at critical times when light is capable of phase-shifting circadian rhythms. This evidence for correlative relations between the effects of light signals in inducing c-fos gene expression in the SCN and modulating the circadian period of the SCN pacemaker suggests that immediate-early genes may be components of the signal transduction cascade by which light entrains circadian rhythms. In addition, dual-immunostaining methods were utilized to examine neurochemical identity of SCN cells that exhibit this circadian induction of c-fos expression in response to light. Within the ventrolateral SCN, the photic induction of Fos expression occurred in neurons expressing gastrin-releasing peptide (GRP), but not in those containing vasoactive intestinal polypeptide (VIP). This finding suggests that SCN neurons containing GRP may be involved in the transduction of photic signals mediating circadian entrainment.

Abstract:The purpose of the present study was to evaluate blood metabolites in dairy cows affected by digestive disorders of fermentative nature. Sixty-six animals with clinical and laboratory diagnoses were distributed into six groups according to the diagnosis: G1 (n=5) acute ruminal acidosis; G2 (n=10) displacement of the abomasum to the right (RDA); G3 (n=16) displacement of the abomasum to the left (LDA); G4 (n=10) cecal dilation; G5 (n=6) simple indigestion; and G6 (n=19) frothy bloat. Biochemical variables related to the energy, protein, enzymatic, mineral, and hormonal profile were measured soon after diagnosis and at the time of clinical resolution. The data were submitted to analysis of variance (ANOVA) with the level of significance set at 5%. Abnormalities were found with the fermentative digestive disorders, such as a negative energy balance (NEB), liver and muscle damage, and a high level of stress. Among the conditions diagnosed, abnormalities were more evident in acute ruminal acidosis, displacement of the abomasum (RDA), and cecal dilation. The biochemical abnormalities reflected the impact caused by the digestive disorders. Thus, understanding of the dynamics of biochemical abnormalities is fundamental to the establishment of the diagnosis, evaluation of the therapeutic response, and a more precise assessment of the prognosis, thereby avoiding greater economic losses in dairy farming activities and contributing to the improvement in the animal welfare.
Association of dry matter intake, milk yield, and days to first ovulation with cytological endometritis in Holstein cows

Abstract:Dry matter intake (DMI, kg/d) is closely related to the magnitude of negative energy and protein balance during the transition period, and the metabolic adaptations to support lactation in dairy cows. Thus, DMI might affect the development of cytological endometritis in the early postpartum period. Difficulty to adapt to these metabolic changes is related to impaired immune function and increased occurrence of reproductive disorders. We aimed to examine the association of pre- and postpartum DMI, body weight (BW), body condition score, milk yield and milk composition, and days to first ovulation with cytological endometritis at 15 (CYT15) and 30 DIM (CYT30). A second objective was to understand the association of vaginal discharge with CYT15 and CYT30 and performance. We conducted a pooled statistical analysis of 5 studies, including data from 280 multiparous Holstein cows. Based on the cutoffs for the percentage of uterine polymorphonuclear cells (PMN), determined by taking the median value of the data set for 15 and 30 DIM, cows were categorized as follows: LOW15 (PMN % at 15 DIM ≤24%; n = 125), HIGH15 (PMN % at 15 DIM >24%; n = 125), LOW30 (PMN % at 30DIM ≤7%; n = 141); and HIGH30 (PMN % at 30DIM >7%; n = 139). Cows in HIGH15 consumed an average of 1.97 ± 0.5 kg/d less DM than cows in LOW15 during prepartum, and 3.01 ± 0.5 kg/d less DM during postpartum. Dry matter intake (as a percentage of BW) was higher for cows in LOW15 during pre- and postpartum than for cows in HIGH15. Moreover, cows in HIGH15 tended to have lower milk yield than cows in LOW15 from the third until the fifth week postpartum. Although DMI was not associated with CYT30, DMI (as a percentage of BW) was lower for cows in LOW30 pre- and postpartum than for cows in HIGH30. There was no association between CYT30 and milk yield. Cows in LOW15 had greater days to first ovulation than cows in HIGH15, while cows in LOW30 also had greater days to first ovulation than cows in HIGH30. Simple regression analyses demonstrated linear associations of increased DMI, particularly postpartum, with decreased uterine PMN percentage and lower vaginal discharge score. Additionally, increased units of vaginal discharge score and increased percentage units of uterine PMN were linearly associated with decreased milk yield. Corroborating with the notion of the ovarian function being associated with uterine inflammatory status, cows in HIGH15 and HIGH30 ovulated on average 3 d before than cows in LOW15 and LOW30, respectively. Cytological endometritis at 15 DIM was associated with lower DMI from 4 wk before calving until 4 wk postpartum and was associated with lower milk yield. The association of vaginal discharge with cytological endometritis was variable and dependent on the day of evaluation.

Abstract:Objective. To evaluate accuracy of transvaginal sonography (TVS)and hysteroscopy in detection of intrauterine pathology in infertilewomen. Subjects and methods. This retrospective study was conductedin 56 infertile women with abnormal transvaginal ultrasoundfindings of the uterine cavity which was performed during the midfollicularphase as a part of routine infertility workup. Hysteroscopy wasperformed between 6th and 10th day of cycle. Results. The mean age ofthe subjects was 31.9±4.0. The most frequent ultrasound finding wasendometrial polyp in 34 (60.7%) patients, septate uterus in 8 (14.3%)patients, submucosal myoma in 7 (12.5%) patients, endometrial hyperplasiain 5 (8.9%) patients and Syndroma Ascherman in 2 (3.6%)patients. Hysteroscopy confirmed 20 (35.7%) polyps, the same numberof myomas, septate uterus and Syndroma Ascherman as detectedby ultrasound, (7 (12.5%), 8 (14.3%) and 2 (3.6%), respectively) and19 (33.9%) endometrial hyperplasia. In 46 women with histologicalexcamination, the sensitivity of TVS and hysteroscopy in the diagnosisof endometrial polyps were identical - 100%, while the specificity washigher in hysteroscopy than in TVS (92.3% versus 56.4%, p<0.001).The sensitivity of TVS in the diagnosis of endometrial hyperplasia washigher than that of hysteroscopy (86.4% versus 22.7%, p<0.001), whilespecificity was identical, of 100%. Accordance between hysteroscopyand histology was good (k=0.79), between ultrasound and hystologywas moderete (k=0.59). Conclusion. Hysteroscopy appeared tobe more reliable in diagnosis than TVS. The use of a high frequencyultrasound probe leads us to a lack of diagnostic clarity between endometrialpolyps and hyperplasia.

Abstract:Isolated chloroplasts which have lost their envelopes and, in consequence, the soluble components which constitute the stroma, will nevertheless evolve O(2) when supplied with an artificial oxidant (the Hill reaction). They will also evolve O(2) with NADP as the Hill oxidant if supplemented with ferredoxin. With catalytic NADP, continuing O(2) evolution can be maintained by the inclusion of a suitable reaction or reaction sequence which reoxidizes NADPH.In the Benson-Calvin cycle the terminal oxidant is glycerate 1,3-bisphosphate which is generated by phosphorylation of 3-phosphoglycerate, its immediate precursor. Experiments with a reconstituted chloroplast system are described in which this reaction sequence is catalyzed by stromal protein and supported by photophosphorylation of catalytic ADP. In the presence of CO(2), 3-phosphoglycerate can be progressively replaced by ribulose 1,5-bisphosphate, ribose 5-phosphate, fructose 6-phosphate, fructose 1,6-bisphosphate, and finally by glyceraldehyde 3-phosphate. In this last instance the natural oxidant is regenerated from its own reduction product (via the carboxylation step) and the reaction sequence therefore involves the entire photosynthetic carbon cycle.
Intermittent parenteral administration of endotoxin triggers metabolic and immunological alterations typically associated with displaced abomasum and retained placenta in periparturient dairy cows

Abstract:This study sought to investigate the effects of induced intermittent endotoxemia on plasma mediators of carbohydrate and lipid metabolism, humoral immunity, and clinical health status in periparturient dairy cows. Sixteen pregnant Holstein cows were blocked by parity and day of calving, and were randomly allocated to 1 of 2 different treatment groups. Eight cows were infused intravenously (i.v.) with 100mL of sterile saline and served as the control group (CON). The other 8 cows were infused i.v. with 100mL of sterile saline containing 3 increasing doses of lipopolysaccharide (LPS), from Escherichia coli O111:B4, for 3 consecutive weeks during the 2 wk before and 1 wk after parturition as follows: (1) 0.01 μg of LPS/kg of body weight (BW) on d -14 and -10; (2) 0.05 μg of LPS/kg of BW on d -7 and -3; and (3) 0.1 μg of LPS/kg of BW on d 3 and 7 postpartum. Nine blood samples were collected during the experimental period (i.e., from -14 to 28 d postpartum) and analyzed for calcium, zinc, iron, copper, glucose, lactate, β-hydroxybutyrate (BHBA), nonesterified fatty acids (NEFA), cholesterol, insulin, cortisol, serum amyloid A (SAA), lipopolysaccharide-binding protein (LBP), haptoglobin (Hp), and anti-LPS IgA, IgG, and IgM. Results showed that intermittently induced endotoxemia decreased feed intake and milk production and triggered alterations in plasma cholesterol, BHBA, Hp, Ca, Cu, and anti-LPS IgG and IgM. All of these changes were associated with a greater number of cows affected by metabolic disorders such as left displaced abomasum (LDA, 2 from 8 LPS cows vs. 0 from 8 CON cows) and retained placenta (RP; 4 from 8 LPS cows vs. 0 from 8 CON cows). In addition, the discriminant analysis differently clustered the cow responses within LPS group, each corresponding to LDA, RP, and the cows displaying no clinical health problems (LPS-NO). The stepwise selection procedure of the best discriminant variables revealed that plasma Ca and anti-LPS IgG, as well as glucose and cortisol, were the best discriminating variables for cows affected by LDA, whereas NEFA and cholesterol better discriminated for cows affected by RP. This analysis also revealed that the cluster of plasma variables including plasma Cu, SAA, BHBA, and anti-LPS IgA were the best discrimination for the LPS-NO group. In conclusion, our results indicate a role of endotoxemia, during the periparturient period, in development of metabolic and immune disturbances, as well as in the etiopathology of displaced abomasum and retained placenta in dairy cows.

Abstract:OBJECTIVES: To review the literature, covering the most important aspects of management of acute poisoning.METHODS: The most relevant articles on the management of acute poisoning were selected.RESULTS: Acute poisoning is an important matter of public health, particularly for the child. Medicaments are the main responsible agents followed closely by accidents with poisonous animals and household chemical products, pesticides and industrial products. The management of the poisoned patient must proceed through the following sequential stages: initial clinical evaluation and stabilization of the patient, when life-threatening situations are identified and treated; recognition of the toxic syndrome and identification of the causal agent, when the careful analysis of the signs and symptoms help choosing the diagnostic tests; decontamination, with the careful use of the available methods; administration of antidotes, which are small in number and should never delay the other phases; enhancing the elimination of the absorbed toxic, which requires knowledge of the kinetics of the toxic substance; and supportive treatment.CONCLUSIONS: The recognition of the toxic syndrome and knowledge of the phases of management are basic conditions for the success of treatment.

Abstract:The current study was conducted to investigate the effects of 5,6-dimethylbenzimidazole (DMB) supplementation to the feed during the transition period and early lactation on the vitamin B12 supply, lactation performance, and energy balance in postpartum cows. Twenty-four prepartum Holstein dairy cows were divided into 12 blocks based on their parity and milk yield at the last lactation and were then randomly allocated to 1 of 2 treatments: a basal diet without DMB (control) or a treatment diet that contained 1.5 g of DMB/d per cow. The study started at wk 3 before the expected calving day and ended at wk 8 postpartum. The feed intake and the lactation performance were measured weekly after calving. Blood parameters were measured on d -10, 0, 8, 15, 29, 43, and 57 relative to the calving day. Body weight was measured on the calving day and on d 57 after calving. The yields of milk, protein, and lactose in cows fed DMB were higher than in the control throughout the whole postpartum stage. On wk 8 postpartum, the vitamin B12 content in the milk and sera was greater in cows fed DMB than in the control. The overall body weight loss from wk 1 to 8 postpartum was less in cows fed DMB than in the control. The plasma content of nonesterified fatty acids and β-hydroxybutyric acid was significantly lower in cows fed DMB than in the control throughout the whole experimental stage. In conclusion, dietary DMB fed during the transition period and early lactation improved the vitamin B12 supply, milk production, and energy balance of postpartum dairy cows.
Time profiles of energy balance in dairy cows in association with metabolic status, inflammatory status, and disease

Abstract:The early lactation period in dairy cows is characterized by complex interactions among energy balance (EB), disease, and alterations in metabolic and inflammatory status. The objective of this study was to cluster cows based on EB time profiles in early lactation and investigate the association between EB clusters and inflammatory status, metabolic status, oxidative stress, and disease. Holstein-Friesian dairy cows (n = 153) were selected and monitored for disease treatments during wk 1 to 6 in lactation. Weekly EB was calculated based on energy intake and energy requirements for maintenance and milk yield in wk 1 to 6 in lactation. Weekly plasma samples were analyzed for metabolic variables in wk 1 to 6, and inflammatory and oxidative stress variables in wk 1, 2, and 4 in lactation. Liver activity index (LAI) was computed from plasma albumin, cholesterol, and retino-binding protein concentration. First, cows were clustered based on time profiles of EB, resulting in 4 clusters (SP: stable positive; MN: mild negative; IN: intermediate negative; SN: severe negative). Cows in the SN cluster had higher plasma nonesterified fatty acids and β-hydroxybutyrate concentrations, compared with cows in the SP cluster, with the MN and IN cluster being intermediate. Cows in the SN cluster had a higher milk yield, lower dry matter intake in wk 1, lower insulin concentration compared with cows in the SP cluster, and lower glucose and IGF-1 concentration compared with cows in the SP and MN clusters. Energy balance clusters were not related with plasma haptoglobin, cholesterol, albumin, paraoxonase, and liver activity index (LAI). Second, cows were grouped based on health status [IHP: cows with treatment for inflammatory health problem (endometritis, fever, clinical mastitis, vaginal discharge or retained placenta); OHP: cows with no IHP but treatment for other health problem (milk fever, cystic ovaries, claw, and leg problems, rumen and intestine problems or other diseases); NHP: cows with no treatments, in the first 6 weeks after calving]. Energy balance was not different among health status groups. The IHP cows had lower nonesterified fatty acids and greater insulin concentration in plasma compared with OHP. The IHP cows had lower plasma albumin concentration, lower LAI and higher haptoglobin concentration compared with OHP and NHP. Overall, EB time profiles were associated with the metabolic status of dairy cows in early lactation, but were only limitedly related with markers of inflammation and oxidative stress status. Inflammatory and metabolic status were related to disease events in early lactation and caused prolonged effects on liver metabolism.
Milk Beta-Hydroxybutyrate and Fat to Protein Ratio Patterns during the First Five Months of Lactation in Holstein Dairy Cows Presenting Treated Left Displaced Abomasum and Other Post-Partum Diseases

Abstract:The main objective of the present study was to evaluate the beta-hydroxybutyrate (BHB) and fat to protein content (F:P) ratio patterns in the milk of Holstein cows with postpartum diseases throughout the first five months of lactation. This prospective study was performed at Vestjyske Dyrlaeger ApS (Nørre Nebel, Denmark). The milk fat, protein, and BHB were evaluated in the Danish Eurofins laboratory according to the monthly averaged days in milk (DIM1 to 5). According to clinical records, five groups were formed: A (control group; cows without diseases; n = 32), B (cows with left displaced abomasum -LDA- and concomitant diseases; n = 25); C (cows with other diseases up to DIM3; n = 13); D (cows with foot disorders up to DIM3; n = 26); and E (cows with disease manifestations in DIM4 and DIM5; n = 26). All the sick cows were treated after diagnosis, and laparoscopy was performed on cows with LDA. In group B, a higher concentration of BHB (0.18 ± 0.02 mmol/L; p < 0.001) was observed than in the control group (0.07 ± 0.02 mmol/L; p < 0.001) in DIM1, presenting an odds ratio (OR) = 8.9. In all groups, BHB decreased to 0.03–0.05 mmol/L (p < 0.05) since DIM3. The F:P ratio was higher in group B (1.77 ± 0.07) than in group A (1.32 ± 0.06; p < 0.05) in DIM1. A similar profile is observed in DIM2. It was observed that animals in group B were four to six times more likely to have a F:P ratio ≥1.29 during DIM1 (OR = 4.0; 95% CI:1.3–14.4; p = 0.01) and DIM2 (OR = 5.9; 95% CI %:1.9–21.9; p < 0.01), than cows in group A. There were also moderate and high correlations between the F:P ratio and the BHB for DIM1 (r = 0.57; r2 = 0.33; RSD = 0.09; p < 0.001) and DIM2 (r = 0.78; r2 = 0.60; RSD = 0.07; p < 0.001), respectively. We concluded that animals affected by LDA in the postpartum period have a higher concentration of BHB in milk in DIM1 and all treated animals quickly recover BHB levels up to DIM3. The F:P ratio is a viable and economic indicator, mainly in DIM1 and DIM2, to estimate BHB concentration and energy balance in cows with LDA and other postpartum diseases.

Cows (n=641) from a farm located in central Pennsylvania were screened at 7±3 DIM (study d 0) to assess vaginal discharge scores. Vaginal discharge was scored using a five-point scale (i.e., 1- clear fluid, 2- <50% white purulent fluid, 3- >50% white purulent fluid, 4- red-brownish fluid without fetid smell, and 5- fetid red-brownish watery fluid). Cows with VDS4 and VDS5 were blocked by parity and randomly assigned to one of two treatment groups: 1) CONV (VDS4 n=15; VDS5 n= 23): two injections of ceftiofur (per label; 6.6 mg/Kg) 72 h apart; and 2) DEX (VDS4 n=15; VDS5 n=22): three intrauterine infusions of a 50% dextrose solution (1 L/cow) every 24 h. Cows that presented a VDS 1, 2, and 3 were categorized as normal vaginal discharge animals (NOMVDS; n=35) and were randomly selected and matched by parity to CONV and DEX cows. Daily milk yield and rumination time for the first 150 DIM were collected from on-farm computer records. Blood samples were collected to assess haptoglobin (HP) and β-hydroxybutyrate (BHB) concentrations at study d 0, d 7, and d 14 relative to enrollment. Subclinical ketosis was defined as having a BHB concentration >1.2 mmol/dL at any of the sampling points. The data were analyzed using the MIXED and GLIMMIX procedures of SAS as a randomized complete block design. When comparing cows with different VDS (i.e., NOMVDS, VDS4, VDS5) separately, cows with VDS5 had the highest concentration of HP at enrollment compared to cows with VDS4 and NOMVDS; however, cows with VDS4 had higher concentrations of HP compared to cows with NOMVDS. Cows with VDS4 or VDS5 had a higher incidence of subclinical ketosis compared to cows with NOMVDS (p=0.005; VDS4= 62.08±9.16%; VDS5=74.44±6.74%; NOMVDS=34.36±8.53%). Similarly, daily milk yield (p<.0001; VDS4=30.17±1.32 kg/d; VDS5=27.40±1.27 kg/d; NOMVDS=35.14±1.35 kg/d) and daily rumination time (p=0.001; VDS4=490.77±19.44 min; VDS5=465±16.67 min; NOMVDS=558.29±18.80 min) was lower for cows with VDS4 and VDS5 compared to cows with NOMVDS at 7±3 days in milk. When analyzing HP concentration between treatment groups in cows with VDS4 (p=0.70), VDS5 (p=0.25), or VDS4 and VDS5 combined (p=0.31), there was no difference in HP concentration by study d 14 between treatment groups. Interestingly, when only cows with VDS4 were considered for treatment, both treatments, DEX and CONV, increased the daily milk yield to the levels of NOMVDS cows by 14 days in milk. On the other hand, when only cows with VDS5 were considered for treatment, cows treated with DEX produced, on average, 4.48 kg/d less milk in the first 150 days in milk compared to cows treated with CONV or cows that had NOMVDS. Similarly, when cows with either VDS4 or VDS5 were considered for treatment, DEX treatment also impaired milk yield. These results suggest that cows with either VDS 4 or 5 have an altered inflammatory status, and decreased milk yield and rumination compared to cows with NOMVDS. Furthermore, DEX treatment may have similar effects on daily milk yield and metabolic status compared to CONV in cows with VDS4, while DEX is not recommended for cows with VDS5.
Maternal pre- and postpartum supplementation of a Bacillus-based DFM enhanced cow and calf performance

Abstract:This study evaluated the effects of maternal supplementation of a Bacillus-based direct-fed microbial (DFM) on the physiology and growth performance of Bos indicus-influenced cow-calf pairs. On day 0 (~139 d before expected calving date), 72 fall-calving, Brangus crossbred beef heifers (20 to 22 mo of age) pregnant with first offspring were stratified by their initial body weight (BW; 431 ± 31 kg) and body condition score (BCS; 6.0 ± 0.36; scale 1 to 9), and randomly allocated into 1 of 12 bahiagrass pastures (1 ha and six heifers per pasture). Treatments were randomly assigned to pastures (six pastures per treatment) and consisted of heifers supplemented with 1 kg/d of soybean hulls (dry matter, DM) that was added (BAC) or not (CON) with DFM containing Bacillus subtilis and B. licheniformis (Bovacillus; Chr. Hansen A/S, Hørsholm, Denmark). Treatments were provided from days 0 to 242 (139 ± 4 d prepartum to 104 ± 4 d postpartum). Calves were weaned on day 242 (96 ± 30 d of age) and then allocated into 1 of 16 drylot pens and fed the same concentrate at 3.25% of BW (DM) until day 319. Maternal treatment effects were not detected (P ≥ 0.29) for herbage allowance and forage chemical composition. Heifer BCS on days 39 and 63 tended (P ≤ 0.09) to be greater for BAC vs. CON heifers, whereas heifer BCS on day 91 was greater (P = 0.01) for BAC vs. CON heifers. Heifer BCS did not differ (P ≥ 0.20) between treatments on days 179 and 242. Plasma glucose concentration did not differ from days 0 to 63 (P ≥ 0.14) but were greater (P < 0.01) on day 179 and tended (P = 0.09) to be greater on day 242 for BAC vs. CON heifers. Calf BW at birth, ADG from birth to weaning, and BW at weaning did not differ (P ≥ 0.19) between treatments, but calf BW at drylot exit (day 319) was greater (P = 0.05) for BAC vs. CON calves. Maternal treatment effects were not detected (P ≥ 0.42) for calf serum concentration of IgG at birth and postvaccination plasma concentrations of glucose, cortisol, and haptoglobin. Serum titers against bovine respiratory syncytial virus (BRSV) were greater (P = 0.04) for BAC vs. CON calves on day 287, whereas seroconversion against parainfluenza-3 virus (PI-3) was greater (P < 0.01) for BAC vs. CON calves on day 271. Thus, maternal supplementation of a Bacillus-based DFM increased prepartum BCS gain and postpartum plasma glucose concentration of heifers and led to positive carryover effects on postweaning BW gain and humoral immune response in their offspring.

Abstract:Abstract Background: A standard chemotherapy for recurrent/metastatic salivary gland cancers has not been established. Combination chemotherapy of carboplatin and paclitaxel should be evaluated as a treatment option. Methods: This study retrospectively reviewed salivary gland cancer patients who received combination chemotherapy of carboplatin and paclitaxel. The differences in objective responses and in the prognoses according to the different pathological diagnoses were evaluated. Results: A total of 38 patients were enrolled in the study; of them, 18 had salivary duct carcinomas (SDCs), nine had adenoid cystic carcinomas (ACCs), and 11 had other pathological diagnoses. Objective responses were observed in 15 (39%) patients. The median progression-free survival (PFS) was 6.5 months, and the median overall survival (OS) was 26.5 months. ACC patients had relatively low response rates (9%), but there were no significant differences in PFS or OS compared to other sub-types. The treatment was well tolerated, with few adverse events. Conclusion: Salivary gland cancer patients showed a moderate clinical response to the combination chemotherapy of carboplatin and paclitaxel. The objective response rates differed according to the pathological diagnoses, but there were no significant differences in prognoses.

Abstract:We present a Monte Carlo simulation study of the phase behavior of two-dimensional classical particles repelling each other through an isotropic Gaussian potential. As in the analogous three-dimensional case, a reentrant-melting transition occurs upon compression for not too high temperatures, along with a spectrum of waterlike anomalies in the fluid phase. However, in two dimensions melting is a continuous two-stage transition, with an intermediate hexatic phase which becomes increasingly more definite as pressure grows. All available evidence supports the Kosterlitz-Thouless-Halperin-Nelson-Young scenario for this melting transition. We expect that such a phenomenology can be checked in confined monolayers of charge-stabilized colloids with a softened core.

Abstract:This paper illustrates effects of board edge termination related to development of either voltage or return plane bounce exceeding operational margin levels of digital components at multiple locations within a printed circuit board (PCB). We study an actual problem encountered by design engineers using a worse-case configuration. This paper also explains how power and/or return bounce is developed. Lack of optimal plane termination at the physical edges of a PCB will exacerbate plane bounce. In addition, a solution that prevents this problem is provided in Section VIII.
Prepartum dietary energy source fed to beef cows: I. Effects on pre- and postpartum cow performance

Abstract:Mature Angus-cross beef cows (n = 144) were used to determine effects of late gestation dietary energy source on pre- and postpartum cow performance in a complete randomized block design experiment. Cows were adapted to diets starting at 167 +/- 9 d of gestation and fed until 1 wk before expected calving date. Cows were fed 1 of 3 dietary energy sources: grass hay (HY), corn (CN), or dried distillers grains (DDGS). Cows allotted to HY were allowed ad libitum access to round-bale grass hay, and average hay disappearance was 12.4 kg/d. Limit-fed corn and DDGS diets contained 5.3 kg of whole-shelled corn or 4.1 kg of DDGS, respectively, plus 2.1 kg of hay, and 1.0 kg of supplement to meet cow nutritional needs during late gestation and to allow for an energy intake similar to HY. Every 21 d, BW, BCS, and ultrasound measurement of backfat between the 12th and 13th ribs were collected. At 210 d in gestation, jugular blood samples were collected from cows at 0, 3, 6, and 9 h postfeeding and were analyzed for glucose, insulin, NEFA, and blood urea N (BUN) concentrations. After parturition, cows were fed a common diet and managed similarly. Milk production was determined by weigh-suckle-weigh procedure on d 31, 100, and 176 postpartum. Cows fed DDGS during late gestation gained more (P = 0.04) BW than cows fed HY or CN; however, no difference in BCS change was detected (P = 0.28) among treatments. Plasma glucose concentrations were similar among treatments (P = 0.64), whereas insulin concentrations at 3 h postfeeding were greater (P = 0.002) for cows fed DDGS than those fed HY or CN. Plasma BUN concentrations were greater (P < or = 0.02) for cows fed DDGS vs. CN or HY up to 6 h postfeeding. Birth weight was greater (P < 0.001) for calves from cows fed CN and DDGS than for those fed HY, but this did not result in any differences in frequency of dystocia (P = 0.21). Prepartum energy source did not affect conception rates (P = 0.79), milk production (P > or = 0.51), or milk composition (P > or = 0.39). Maternal dietary energy source in late gestation did not affect pre- or postpartum cow performance, but did change plasma hormones and metabolites during gestation. Heavier birth weights in calves from cows fed CN or DDGS indicate the changes in maternal metabolism affected energy partitioning of nutrients to the fetus and subsequent fetal growth.
