Abstract:In order to fully understand the relationship between boron doping level and material characteristics, a series of high-quality boron-doped diamond (BDD) electrodes with different boron doping levels (B/C ratios = 1000–5000 ppm) were prepared on a silicon substrate using a self-designed microwave plasma chemical vapor deposition (MPCVD) reactor in this study. The relationship between surface morphology, structural composition, chemical bonding state, electrical conductivity and electrochemical properties of BDD electrodes was investigated systematically. With the increase of boron doping level, the grain size of the BDD electrode tends to decrease, the crystal orientation tends to be dominated by (111) orientation, the conductivity increases sharply and then gradually stabilizes, while the width of the potential window tends to decrease (4.39 V to 3.95 V from 1000 ppm to 5000 ppm), and the reversibility and stability of the electrode improves significantly. In addition, such high-quality BDD electrodes also exhibit a higher sensitivity (0.1176 μAμM −1 cm −2 ) and lower limit of detection (0.276 μM) in the detection of dopamine. The boron doping level in BDD electrodes plays a prominent role in material characteristics such as surface morphology, structural composition, chemical bonding state, electrical conductivity and electrochemical properties. Despite the challenging synthesis of pure sp 3 carbon materials at high boron doping levels, the BDD electrodes prepared in this study exhibit high quality without sp 2 defects even with high boron doping levels, and possess extremely low resistivity (~10 −3 Ω·cm) and a wide electrochemical potential window (~4 V), which has not been achieved in other previous research works and offer great potential in the electrochemical applications of BDD electrodes.

Abstract:In this work, we proposed a novel modification technique to immobilize nanoparticles by the nanopores on a boron-doped diamond surface, preventing the aggregation of nanoparticles physically and improving the stability of nanoparticles layer by the anchoring effect. All the exposed surfaces of a bare boron-doped diamond were etched into nanoporous form and larger electrochemically active surface area was obtained on the porous boron-doped diamond electrode. The carbon black nanoparticles modified porous boron-doped diamond electrode showed good selectivity to separate the oxidation potential of three molecules, but led to an extra increase in the peak current of dopamine (DA). The carbon black/Nafion modified porous diamond electrode effectively suppress the oxidation current of ascorbic acid (AA), enhancing the sensitivity of DA. The dual layer treatment enables a wide linear range, 0.1-100 μM and a low limit of detection, 54 nM for DA detection, which is almost unaffected by the excess AA and uric acid (UA). At last, real sample tests of the carbon black/Nafion modified porous diamond electrode was validated by applying to the detection of DA in human serum and dopamine hydrochloride injection, which were found to be promising at our preliminary experiments. Additionally, the fabricated carbon black/Nafion modified porous diamond electrode also demonstrated good stability and long-term functionality.

Abstract:Platinum wire microelectrodes generally exhibited properties of low sensitivity but are easily contaminated where it comes to dopamine detection. In this paper, a platinum wire modified with gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) and reduced graphene oxide (rGO) was used to electrochemically detect dopamine in vivo. Electrochemical performances of microelectrodes (before and after surface modification) were investigated by impedance spectroscopy and cyclic voltammetry. The results showed that AuNPs/rGO composites significantly increase the electrode surface area and improve the electrocatalytic property of platinum wires. The modified electrodes exhibited excellent sensitivity for dopamine detection (LOD=16.57nM), as well as ascendant selectivity (simultaneous detection of ascorbic acid, dopamine, and uric acid), reproducibility (R.S.D.=3.98%), and stability (≫100 repetitive potential sweeps, 1-week lifespan). In vivo experiments showed that the proposed AuNPs/rGO electrode was also capable of detecting dopamine in complex physiological environments, particularly in the striatum of anesthetized rats. Hence, the proposed electrodes provided a potential application in in vivo multiplexing neurotransmitter detection in further research.

Abstract:Selective detection of dopamine is still a challenge due to the strong interference from ascorbic acid (AA). A hybrid dopamine electrochemical sensor was fabricated by boron-doped diamond (BDD) film co-modified with gold nanoparticles and graphite-coated nickel nanoparticles (Au-C@Ni/BDD). Highly sensitive and selective detection toward dopamine was achieved by multiple electrochemical anodic polarization treatment (EAPT) with relatively mild voltage (+ 1.6 V vs. Ag/AgCl) on Au-C@Ni/BDD electrode. Specifically, the oxidation peak separation between ascorbic acid and dopamine reached 166 mV, and the limit of detection of dopamine was as low as 0.015 μM in a linear concentration range of 0.05–100 μM with the sensitivity up to 1.99 μA μM−1 cm−2 even in the presence of interference of high-level AA. These could be ascribed to the electrocatalytically active sites and functional oxygen-containing groups of the hybrid electrodes produced by the EAPT and the excellent catalytical activity of gold nanoparticles.

Abstract:The boron doped diamond (BDD) electrodes were effective biosensors for the trace detection of organic pollutants in aqueous solution. BDD electrodes with different boron doped levels will display distinct binding energy and carrier density from the perspective of semiconductor, thus significantly impact the current and oxidation peak potential, and further influence detection performance of hazardous substances. In this study, BDDs with different boron doped levels were prepared by hot filament chemical vapor deposition method, followed by characterization of morphology and electrochemical behavior through various methods. Carrier concentrations, which were highly relevant to the charge transfer in diamond lattice, and flat-bandpotentials that can reflect the oxidation peak potential, were calculated through Mott-Schottky plots. Uric acid was chosen as typical matter for trace detection. As results, the continuous films without cracks were formed for all BDDs by SEM detection, and the size of diamond grain decreased with the increase of boron doped level. Moreover, the carrier concentration enhanced with the increasing boron doped level, thus resulted in the augment of current density. While the Fermi levels calculated from flat band potentials, decreased with the increase of boron doped level, suggesting the decrease of oxidation peak potential. These were in accordance with the results from cyclic voltammetry. Differential pulse voltammetry proved that BDD with higher boron concentration presented higher sensibility to uric acid, lower detection limit and wider linear range, which can be attributed to stronger current response. Abstract:Boron-doped diamond (BDD) is a prospective electrode material that possesses many exceptional properties including wide potential window, low noise, low and stable background current, chemical and mechanical stability, good biocompatibility, and last but not least exceptional resistance to passivation. These characteristics extend its usability in various areas of electrochemistry as evidenced by increasing number of published articles over the past two decades. The idea of chemically modifying BDD electrodes with molecular species attached to the surface for the purpose of creating a rational design has found promising applications in the past few years. BDD electrodes have appeared to be excellent substrate materials for various chemical modifications and subsequent application to biosensors and biosensing. Hence, this article presents modification strategies that have extended applications of BDD electrodes in electroanalytical chemistry. Different methods and steps of surface modification of this electrode material for biosensing and construction of biosensors are discussed.

Abstract:Robust devices for chronic neural stimulation demand electrode materials which exhibit high charge injection (Q inj) capacity and long-term stability. Boron-doped diamond (BDD) electrodes have shown promise for neural stimulation applications, but their practical applications remain limited due to the poor charge transfer capability of diamond. In this work, we present an attractive approach to produce BDD electrodes with exceptionally high surface area using porous titanium nitride (TiN) as interlayer template. The TiN deposition parameters were systematically varied to fabricate a range of porous electrodes, which were subsequently coated by a BDD thin-film. The electrodes were investigated by surface analysis methods and electrochemical techniques before and after BDD deposition. Cyclic voltammetry (CV) measurements showed a wide potential window in saline solution (between -1.3 and 1.2 V vs. Ag/AgCl). Electrodes with the highest thickness and porosity exhibited the lowest impedance magnitude and a charge storage capacity (CSC) of 253 mC/cm2, which largely exceeds the values previously reported for porous BDD electrodes. Electrodes with relatively thinner and less porous coatings displayed the highest pulsing capacitances (C pulse), which would be more favorable for stimulation applications. Although BDD/TiN electrodes displayed a higher impedance magnitude and a lower C pulse as compared to the bare TiN electrodes, the wider potential window likely allows for higher Q inj without reaching unsafe potentials. The remarkable reduction in the impedance and improvement in the charge transfer capacity, together with the known properties of BDD films, makes this type of coating as an ideal candidate for development of reliable devices for chronic neural interfacing.

Abstract:In vivo tracking or in vitro real sample analysis by electrochemistry is one of the most straight and useful methods in biosensor field. However, surface biofouling of electrodes by non-specific protein adsorption is inevitable and usually leads to a decrease in sensitivity. Here, we developed a Nafion-coated porous boron-doped diamond (NAF/pBDD) electrode with hydrophobic nanostructures to minimize the biofouling effect and selectively detect dopamine (DA). Larger active area was obtained by this procedure compared to a bare diamond electrode. The as-prepared electrode shows excellent antifouling property and enrichment capacity toward selective detection of dopamine (DA). The low background current of the BDD electrode and the enhanced signals enables a lower detection limit, 42 nmol L−1, and a wider linear range, 0.1–110 μmol L−1, for determination of DA in human serum. Additionally, the facile modified electrode demonstrated renewable property and long-term stability due to the fact that the antifouling nanostructures belong to its own.

Abstract:Graphene materials represented by graphene oxide (GO) have been widely regarded as functional coatings or films to modify surface of the electrode for detecting dopamine molecules. However, interfacial material properties for detection sensitivity, film stability, and applicability to electrodes are still highly desired. Herein, we first present a screen-printing carbon electrode (SPCE) coated with an electrochemically reduced layer-by-layer (LbL) assembled multilayer driven by an electrostatic interaction between positively charged polyethyleneimine-modified GO with amine groups (ERGO+) and negatively charged carboxyl-functionalized GO (ERGO-), which is briefly described as (ERGO+/ERGO-)n/SPCE. Firstly, without using conventional glassy carbon and gold electrodes, SPCE was tried to make coatings adapt to more flexible and unstable electrodes, simultaneously guaranteeing higher detection performance. Secondly, although a variety of electrochemical sensors such as GO-/SPCE and ERGO-/SPCE were obtained through the drop-casting technique, as-prepared (ERGO+/ERGO-)n/SPCE showed much higher electrocatalytic activities with enhanced peak current signals and reduced charge transfer resistance. Finally, excellent electrochemical properties and sensing performances of the (ERGO+/ERGO-)n/SPCE sensor for detection of dopamine were demonstrated, especially having a linear range of 1 μM to 1000 μM. Meanwhile, the detection limit is as low as 0.39 μM and S/N is equal to 3. The present work offers a potential direction to develop GO modified electrodes for sensitive biomolecular detection.

Abstract:This article addresses the construction of a dopamine electrochemical sensor based on a molecularly imprinted polymer on carbon electrodes, for instance, glassy carbon and highly oriented pyrolytic graphite electrodes with the orientation of edge and basal plane by the formation of thiophene acetic acid-dopamine thin film using electropolymerization. The electrochemical deposition of Pt nanoparticles was then carried out at the modified electrode surface, followed by the extraction of dopamine as a template molecule from the generated layer was performed via elution brought on by chemicals. The variables that affect the performance of the imprinted polymer-based sensor, such as monomer-template ratio, immersion time, and the number of electropolymerization cycles, were examined and optimized. To confirm the changes in the oxidation peak current of DA and to investigate the electrochemical behavior of the MIP sensor, cyclic voltammetry, chronoamperometry, and differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) tests were performed. The differential pulse voltammetry studies revealed that, under ideal circumstances, the limit of detection values of the proposed MIP sensor decorated with Pt nanoparticles was found to be 14.40 nmol L −1 , 42.50 nmol L −1 , and 0.671 μmol L −1 for glassy carbon, edge, and basal plane electrodes, respectively. In the presence of interferents with comparable structural chemicals, such as ascorbic acid, uric acid, glucose, o-phenylenediamine, and glycine, the proposed sensor exhibits noticeable selectivity. Dopamine analysis in a human fluid such as blood serum was conducted with success using the devised sensor, which was shown to possess impressive stability and reproducibility.

Heavily boron-doped diamond grown on scalable heteroepitaxial quasi-substrates: A promising single crystal material for electrochemical sensing applications

Abstract:In this work, three distinct heteroepitaxial single-crystal boron-doped diamond (SC-BDD) electrodes were fabricated and subjected to detailed surface analysis and electrochemical characterization. Specifically, the heteroepitaxy approach allowed to synthesize large-area (1 cm 2 ) and heavily-doped (100)-oriented SC-BDD electrodes. Their single-crystal nature and crystal orientation were confirmed by X-ray diffraction, while scanning electron and atomic force microscopies revealed marked variations in surface morphology resulting from their growth on respective on-axis and off-axis substrates. Further, absence of sp 2 impurities along with heavy boron doping (>10 21 cm −3 ) was demonstrated by Raman spectroscopy and Mott-Schottky analysis, respectively. Cyclic voltammetry (CV) in a 0.1 M KNO 3 solution revealed wide potential windows (∼3.3 V) and low double-layer capacitance (<4 μF cm −2 ) of the SC-BDD electrodes. Their highly conductive, 'metal-like' nature was confirmed by CV with [Ru(NH 3 ) 6 ] 3+/2+ probe manifesting near-reversible redox response with Δ E p approaching 0.059 V. The same probe was used to record scanning electrochemical micrographs, which clearly demonstrated homogeneously distributed electrochemical activity of the heteroepitaxial SC-BDD electrodes. Minor differences in their electrochemical performance, presumably resulting from the somewhat different morphological features, were only unveiled during CV with surface sensitive compounds [Fe(CN) 6 ] 3−/4− and dopamine. The latter was also used to show the possibility of applying herein developed heteroepitaxial SC-BDD electrodes for electrochemical sensing, whereas experiments with anthraquinone-2,6-disulfonate revealed their enhanced resistance to fouling. All in all, heteroepitaxial SC-BDD represents a highly attractive electrode material which can, owing to the fabrication strategy, easily overcome size limitation, currently preventing broader use of single crystal diamond electrodes in electrochemical applications.

Abstract:This study aims to develop a microelectrode array-based neural probe that can record dopamine activity with high stability and sensitivity. To mimic the high stability of the gold standard method (carbon fiber electrodes), the microfabricated platinum microelectrode is coated with carbon-based nanomaterials. Carboxyl-functionalized multi-walled carbon nanotubes (COOH-MWCNTs) and carbon quantum dots (CQDs) were selected for this purpose, while a conductive polymer like poly (3-4-ethylene dioxythiophene) (PEDOT) or polypyrrole (PPy) serves as a stable interface between the platinum of the electrode and the carbon-based nanomaterials through a co-electrodeposition process. Based on our comparison between different conducting polymers and the addition of CQD, the CNT–CQD–PPy modified microelectrode outperforms its counterparts: CNT–CQD–PEDOT, CNT–PPy, CNT–PEDOT, and bare Pt microelectrode. The CNT–CQD–PPy modified microelectrode has a higher conductivity, stability, and sensitivity while achieving a remarkable limit of detection (LOD) of 35.20 ± 0.77 nM. Using fast-scan cyclic voltammetry (FSCV), these modified electrodes successfully measured dopamine's redox peaks while exhibiting consistent and reliable responses over extensive use. This electrode modification not only paves the way for real-time, precise dopamine sensing using microfabricated electrodes but also offers a novel electrochemical sensor for in vivo studies of neural network dynamics and neurological disorders.

Abstract:Screen-printed sensors with chemically deposited boron-doped diamond electrodes (BDDE) were modified with different types of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) according to a new original procedure. Physically and electrochemically deposited AuNPs had various sizes and also nanoporous character. They also differ in shape and density of surface coverage. The developed sensors were characterized using scanning electron microscopy and Raman spectroscopy. Their electrochemical properties were studied using cyclic voltammetry and electrochemical impedance spectrometry of selected outer sphere ([Ru(NH 3 ) 6 ]Cl 3 ) and inner sphere (K 3 [Fe(CN) 6 ], dopamine) redox markers. The application possibilities of such novel screen-printed sensors with BDDE modified by AuNPs were verified in the analysis of the neurotransmitter dopamine. The best analytical performance was achieved using printed sensors modified with the smallest AuNPs. The achieved limit of detection values in nanomolar concentrations (2.5 nmol L −1 ) are much lower than those of unmodified electrodes, which confirms the significant catalytic effects of gold nanoparticles on the surface of the working electrode. Sensors with the best electrochemical properties were successfully applied in the analysis of a model solution and spiked urine samples.

Abstract:A three dimensional (3D) graphene assembly with hierarchical pores (3DHPG) was prepared by hydrothermal assembly and subsequent carbon-thermal reaction induced etching. The structure and component of the product were characterized by SEM, TEM, Raman, N2 adsorption-desorption, and XPS. The introduction of mesopores in basal plane of graphene in 3DHPG brings it more edge structure, more oxygen-containing defects, and larger surface area than typical 3D porous graphene foam (3DPG). Electrochemical study revealed the 3DHPG/GCE shows larger current response and improved mass transfer efficiency than 3DPG/GCE. Using dopamine as a model molecule, the 3DHPG/GCE shows much higher current response than that on 3DPG/GCE. The dopamine sensor based on 3DHPG/GCE display a linear range of 0.01- 300 μM and a detection limit of 3 nM. The linear range is wider than that on 3DPG (0.05-200 μM), and the detection limit is lower than that on 3DPG (20 nM). The improved sensing performance can be attributed to the hierarchically porous structure with large surface area, efficient mass transfer and enhanced catalysis due to the introduction of mesopores. The 3D hierarchically porous graphene assembly with unique structure and catalysis should be a promising material in electrochemical devices.

Abstract:Graphite lead electrodes modified with G4.0 – 64OH PAMAM dendrimers (G – PAMAM) were designed, constructed and characterized. Each composite was electrochemically immobilized on previously pretreated graphite, and characterized by several electrochemical and spectroscopic techniques. Then, amperometric calibration plots were constructed to measure the current density of the dopamine (DA) oxidation reaction in synthetic cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). According to the results, the electrode with the best sensitivity, while maintaining low detection and quantification limits, is G – PAMAM. A pencil lead graphite electrode modified with G4.0 – 64 OH PAMAM dendrimers can detect 6.67 nM of DA and quantify 22.24 nM of DA in a cell with two electrodes.

Abstract:Amorphous boron powders were applied to grow boron-doped diamond (BDD) films with chemical vapor deposition method. The material is nontoxic and noncorrosive compared to conventional boron sources such as boroethane. The mechanism for using solid boron source as the dopant in low temperature and low pressure has been explained with a non-equilibrium thermodynamic coupling model and optical emission spectroscopic analysis. The BDD film was utilized in a non-enzymatic glucose sensor. A porous Au/Ni layer was then placed on the BDD surface for enhanced sensitivity. The electrode was characterized by scanning electron microscopy, Raman spectra, X-ray diffraction, cyclic voltammograms and amperometric responses. Typically operated at a voltage of 500 mV, it demonstrated fast response to glucose thanks to its large surface, rapid electron transfer, and synergetic effects between Au and Ni. Two specific linear ranges are found, one between 0.02 and 2 mM, and a second one between 2 and 9 mM. The detection limit and the best sensitivity are 2.6 μM and 157.5 μAmM−1 cm−2.

Abstract:A strategy is presented for doping graphene into layered double hydroxide films (LDHs) as a means of improving charge transport of the LDH film in a modified glassy carbon electrode. This result in an enhanced electrocatalytic current for dopamine (DA) and a good separation of the potentials of DA, uric acid and ascorbic acid. Under selected conditions, the square wave voltammetric response of the electrode to DA is linear in the concentration range from 1.0 to 199 μM even in the presence of 0.1 mM ascorbic acid, and the detection limit is 0.3 μM at a signal-to-noise ratio of 3. The method was applied to the determination of DA in pharmaceutical injections with satisfactory results.
