Abstract:In the partition of the church of San Bernardino in Caravaggio (Lombardy), Fermo Stella (c. 1490-1562) depicted a cycle of frescoes of "The Passion of Christ". In the central panel, "The Crucifixion" one of the tortures of Christ, the sponge-bearer, shows a large goiter and other signs of hypothyroidism (macroglossia, expressionless face, and puffiness around the eyes), confirming that the Renaissance artists often represented sinful and wicked individuals as affected by thyroid diseases.

Abstract:Introduction: Bartolomeo Vivarini (Venezia 1432c.-Venezia 1499c.) was an Italian painter during the Renaissance. The artist was widely influenced by Andrea Mantegna, whose opera was characterized by personages with anatomical details meticulously described. Materials and methods: Some of the most valued paintings of Bartolomeo Vivarini were analyzed. Purpose of the present article is to describe these artworks focusing on female personages represented with thyroid swelling. Results: A recurring female model in Vivarini's artworks is portrayed with a goitrous neck. This might display a real prevalence of thyroid diseases among young women in the Renaissance age (e.g. postpartum thyroiditis). Conclusions: Representation of goiter in the artworks of Vivarini and Mantegna reflects the increased anatomic accuracy and knowledge developed in art since Renaissance and Baroque.

Abstract:The Renaissance is recognised as an inflection point in history that led to the dissemination of innovation, science, philosophy, and the arts to spearhead a leap for global civilisation. Many of the greatest outputs from the Renaissance were presented in artwork which was able to champion elements of naturalism and realism, and therefore moved away from preconceived ideas. This included the portrayal of anatomy and pathology with an exactitude previously unseen in art. I note novel identification of goiters in multiple paintings of the foremost Renaissance genius artists and their originating artistic schools, those of Verrocchio, Lippi and Ferrara. These can be categorised through the proposed (i) 'da Vinci Sign' after Leonardo da Vinci, where the goitre is artistically presented as a loss or shallowing of the suprasternal notch recess or (ii) the 'Botticelli Sign' after Sandro Botticelli, where there is demonstrable cranio-cervical neck flexion that forward projects the visceral compartment of the neck that includes the thyroid to accentuate a recognisable thyroid enlargement. These are notable in the works of genius artists that include Verrocchio, Lorenzo di Credi, Filippo Lippi, Cosimo Tura and Francesco Cossa. Together, the work of these artistic geniuses add to the corpus of notable endocrine pathology in the Renaissance deriving from endemic iodine deficiency and autoimmunity. They demonstrate this profound extent of pathology within their artistic masterpieces and extend our admiration of the wider experience of Renaissance artists into the current era and beyond.
Earliest depiction of vitiligo in "Venus at a Mirror" (1615) by Peter Paul Rubens (1577-1640)

Abstract:The 1615 painting of Venus at a Mirror by Peter Paul Rubens is considered a powerful example of the Flemish Baroque movement. Recently it has been identified that the Venus character in the image has a goitre, however on studying the image further, I note dermato-pathology in another of the painting's main characters; the dark-skinned female typically described as the Venus' maidservant who clearly demonstrates patches of skin pigment loss on her face and neck with a concurrent streak of white hair. Together these suggest the underlying diagnosis of vitiligo. There is also a goitre in this individual suggesting thyroid disease. This new finding may offer additional insight into the historical epidemiology of disease in northern Europe but also offers further understanding of the method, origin, and pathological associations of this prominent painting from a genius artist.
From sacred geometry to an old man: on the figure of the Father in Dante’s Divine Comedy and in Michelangelo’s Sistine Chapel

Abstract:Abstract Dante was exempt from the 15–16th century Renaissance humanists’ general distrust of the medieval heritage. Among many other factors, one reason for this was the experience of shared Florentine pride and destiny. In his time, Michelangelo was considered one of the best-qualified Dante-experts. Already in his lifetime (and with his knowledge), the literature began to thoroughly explore the influence of his predecessor on Michelangelo’s sculptures, paintings and poems. The paper discusses a new aspect of this influence. It seeks an answer to the question of how the representations of God can nevertheless be radically different in the Commedia and the ceiling fresco of the Sistine Chapel. How sacred geometry (the circles of the Trinity) is transformed into a vigorous old man, who directs the events of the creation like an aerial acrobat. The answer may be found in the Platonic theology and cosmology of Ficino’s Academy, which is the continuation of the Christian trend represented by Dionysius the Areopagite and Eriugena. The Father is in motion because, along with the world and man, He also creates himself; in contrast with the “outsider” claim of ego dominus et non mutor ; he is also part of the “concert”.

Abstract:The Ghent Altarpiece, a jewel of Gothic art painted by the van Eyck brothers in the fifteenth century, is particularly noteworthy for its use of an innovative dilution of oil, giving it a realistic scope that is particularly conducive to iconodiagnostic hypotheses. For the first time in the literature, we are taking a medical look at this masterpiece, and more specifically at the representation of its patron, whose identity is well known: Joos Vijd, a powerful notable from the town of Ghent, in modern-day Belgium. A vascular turgidity of the temporal artery, which can be suggestive of temporal arteritis, Hertoghe's sign and a slight ear crease were observed. These signs might be vascular lesions accentuated by Vijd's age and attest to van Eyck's virtuosity and anatomic accuracy.

Abstract:Fragments of the so-called "Straußfurt Retable", temporarily acquired by Nazi leader Hermann Goering and therefore later suspected as looted art, are exemplary for problems of provenance investigation in poorly documented objects. The central shrine is a carved high relief showing the coronation of the virgin Mary. Damages from the end of WWII are described and illustrated in the literature. A very astonishing dermatologic finding, however, was never mentioned, or never seen: a large exophytic "skin"-colored tumor on the cheekbone of Christ, covered by the coherent original color layer with fine crevices in the basal edges. Only on closer examination does it become clear that the protrusion could not have existed in this location from the beginning. Its (relative!) growth is a result of "working" of wood fibers without cell proliferation, with nearly no longitudinal, but very considerable transverse shrinkage. This tumor represents masses of vertical fibers belonging to a branch that was above the surface of the wood. The starting point of the tumor growth was a "knot" in the Lime wood that would not have been suspected by the carver-500 years ago.

Abstract:The present article reports all ancient writers and poets who dealt with the Gorgoneian head and the Gorgon-Medusa related myth presented in a chronological order basically during the 1st millennium B.C. from Homeric epics to late antiquity of Fabius Planciades Fulgentius and Ioannis Malalas in the 5th and 6th c. A.D. Essentially it is a discussion on the ancient written sources, based on the original texts. Especially for the most ancient sources - such as Homer, Hesiod, Cyclic epics – and references were made to known scholars in the field of philology. Particularly critical discussion and comments are made, along with the investigation of the primary ancient writing sources, as well as the related iconography. The final conclusions show the degree of influence of ancient written sources on art, but also vice versa, that is, how much art influenced ancient texts.
Pigment identification on "Pietà" of Barletta, example of Renaissance Apulian sculpture: a Raman microscopy study

Abstract:A study of the original painting layer of the "Pietà" of Barletta, a polychrome statue, important example of Renaissance Apulian sculpture, was performed by mu-Raman spectroscopy. Vermilion was identified in the original layer of the blood drops on Jesus knee. Lazurite was identified as the original blue pigment on Our Lady's veil and lace, currently a yellow ochre-like color. The use of lazurite demonstrates the historical-artistic importance of this polychrome statue, and supports the hypothesis that this artwork was probably commissioned by Our Lady's devotees to itinerant artists inspired by the more precious Vesperbilder model.

Abstract:Both lauded and criticized for his pictorial eclecticism, the Florentine artist Jacopo Carrucci, known as Pontormo, created some of the most visually striking religious images of the Renaissance. These paintings, which challenged prevailing illusionistic conventions, mark a unique contribution into the complex relationship between artistic innovation and Christian traditions in the first half of the sixteenth century. Pontormo's sacred works are generally interpreted as objects that reflect either pure aesthetic experimentation, or personal and cultural anxiety. Jessica Maratsos, however, argues that Pontormo employed stylistic change deliberately for novel devotional purposes. As a painter, he was interested in the various modes of expression and communication - direct address, tactile evocation, affective incitement - as deployed in a wide spectrum of devotional culture, from sacri monti, to Michelangelo's marble sculptures, to evangelical lectures delivered at the Accademia Fiorentina. Maratsos shows how Pontormo translated these modes in ways that prompt a critical rethinking of Renaissance devotional art.

Abstract:This text analyzes the paintings of the face of Christ by artists Coppo di Marcovaldo and Giotto de Bandone. The refl ections are guided by the thought that art is as a form of knowledge that establishes a relationship between the external reality and the artist’s subjectivity; thus, social changes are recorded in artistic creations. This text will be written through the relationship between scholars authors and artists. The sensitivity of the work of Coppo di Marcovaldo will be related to the writings of Anselm de Bec. The concreteness of man, in the painting of Giotto Bondone, will be associated with the refl ections of Thomas Aquinas. Through the iconographic analysis, we see that Marcovaldo presents a Christ with strong characteristics of suffering, which can be understood as enhancement of the sensitive aspect of humanity, drawing closer to the thought of Anselm. Giotto, meanwhile, creates a Christ with human characteristics, but without the sentimental appeal, which is closer to those of Thomas Aquinas. Thus, the images of Christ of Marcovaldo and Giotto express the changes that have occurred in art and the constant movement in the way of thinking and understanding the world that form history. For us, it is in this relationship intertwined in the changes in social relations, expressed in works of the academic authors and in their iconographic manifestations, that we see the amalgam that exists between the artistic subjectivity and the training/education of men.

Abstract:Recent scholarship on ancient art insists that religious context is of paramount importance to original meaning. That is not to say that aesthetic considerations of style, form, and material are to be ignored, but that a multiplicity of viewing positions uniting the aesthetic and the sacred are necessary if we are to try and visualize Greek sculpture through ancient eyes. This chapter focuses on four well‐known statues ranging from the Archaic to Hellenistic periods – the Peplos kore, the Doryphoros, the Aphrodite of Cnidos, and the Barberini faun – with the aim of exploring the essential relationship between aesthetics and religion in Greek sculpture and considering questions surrounding the nature of divinity and representation.

Abstract:The restoration of the funeral monument of Innocent VIII (Giovan-Battista Cibo, 1484-1492) was executed by Sante Guido with the support of the Knights of Columbus. The praiseworthy intervention aimed at restoring the monument from polluting aerodynamic agents has at the same time enabled a careful study of the work regarding, above all, the authenticity of the current coloring in relation to the original presentation intended by Antonio del Pollaiolo. In particular, an attempt has been made to uncover the historical vicissitudes of the work: from its realization to the present restoration. In this regard, I would like to recall that, as reported by Pasquale Rotondi, the restoration of a work is a very special moment in which it is possible to carry out all the studies aimed at understanding the causes which have determined its state of conservation, as well as, of course, its constituent elements and its implementing methods.
Iveron Icon of the Mother of God: reconstruction based on physical–chemical tests as an element of conservation

Abstract:Recently art conservators tend to wonder which of the possible intervention paths to undertake while planning a conservation project and how deep their interference with the original substance should be. Limiting intervention to ceasing the ongoing degradation process and securing the object for the future without restoring any missing parts of the composition is just one of the many available approaches. Making a brand new copy of the painting where all the missing parts could be fully reconstructed and exposing it along with the original is a good alternative to traditional restoration practice. This method has been used by Danuta Stępień during conservation of a Russian icon entitled "Our Lady of Iver" (Moscow, 1908–1917, egg tempera on a wooden panel partially covered by a silver oklad , 10.8 × 13.2 × 0.8 cm). The silver oklad was executed by the workshop of Smirnow. Technology and materials have been identified via different analytical techniques: VIS, UV, IR and X-ray photography, microscopic photography, SEM–EDS analysis and FTIR. Specific medical radiological instruments have also been used as non-invasive analytical tools. The following materials have been identified: yellow ochre, cinnabar, cadmium red, red iron oxides, silver, gold and copper. The oklad is made of an Ag-rich silver–copper alloy. Its whole surfaces are richly engraved with traces of gold detected inside the engravings. Based on this fact, an assumption has been made that originally the upper part of the oklad might have been entirely covered with a layer of gold. The information gathered during research allowed to execute a fine copy of the icon using similar materials and techniques. An alternative to classic restoration approach is to create a faithful but fully reconstructed copy that could be exposed along with the original painting. This solution not only assures maximum respect for the original substance but also allows the recipients to better understand its history and technique.

Abstract:This study focuses on the Memorial Chapel, a historical site located inside the Tempio Evangelico Valdese in Florence. In 1843, the first Anglican church in Florence, known as Holy Trinity Church, was built by D. Giraldi. Around 1892, G. F. Bodley began the reconstruction of a new building of neo-Gothic style at the same site, which was completed in 1904. This new church had a space dedicated to memory called Memorial Chapel. In 1967, the monumental complex was acquired by the Waldensians, now known as the Tempio Evangelico Valdese. This interdisciplinary investigation aimed to study the most damaged painted walls of the chapel. For this purpose, samples of decorative plaster mortars were collected from various points, after carrying out a digital mapping of the degraded areas. Mineralogical, petrographic, optical, chemical, and microchemical analyses were performed. This study made it possible to highlight the composition and the characteristics of the different layers of the plaster mortars, permitting us also to identify the types of pigments used over time in the paintings; furthermore, it was possible to reconstruct the degradation phenomena on the walls and the events that caused them, providing valuable insight for targeted restoration efforts.

Abstract:The iconographic heritage is one of the treasures of Byzantine art that have enriched the south of Italy, and Sicily in particular, since the early 16th century. In this work, the investigations of a Sicilian Icon of Greek-Byzantine origin, the Madonna dell'Elemosina, is reported for the first time. The study was carried out using mainly non-invasive imaging techniques (photography in reflectance and grazing visible light, UV fluorescence, infrared reflectography, radiography, and computed tomography) and spectroscopic techniques (X-ray fluorescence and infrared spectroscopy). The identification of the constituent materials provides a decisive contribution to the correct historical and artistic placement of the Icon, a treasure of the Eastern European historical community in Sicily. Some hidden details have also been highlighted. Most importantly, the information obtained enables us to define its conservation state, the presence of foreign materials, and to direct its protection and restoration.

Abstract:This study provides new data which suggest a novel interpretative hypothesis not only on the specific painting, but on the use of bloodletting as medical practice in the Florentine Quattrocento. As a part of a cycle of frescoes devoted to the Seven Corporal Works of Mercy, the examined lunette depicts the "Visit to the sick" in a domestic interior, but it has never been considered as an historical document of precise medical practices. The scene's definitive interpretation is still unresolved because of the uncertainty of some iconographic details. A campaign of in-situ and non-invasive technical investigations was performed to retrieve possible traces of previous details today concealed. The technical solutions adopted to implement the measurements campaign are illustrated, as an experimental example for remote sensing inspection of mural paintings in-situ. The position of the painting high up on a wall of an historical venue led to opting for stand-alone optical imaging techniques which could operate in remote sensing mode. By combining the use of portable Hyperspectral Imaging with Near Infrared photography a set of detailed images could be obtained that highlighted details not otherwise detectable. Focused on the objects held by the persons present, the analysis of the mural of Visit of the Buonomini in her Lying in Bed , the gift of swaddling cloth could be a tourniquet, shadows of folds of a blanket a thumb lancet, and an object held a blood collection bowl, supported the hypothesis that it could be a medieval bloodletting scene.

Francesco Fontana and his "astronomical" Telescope

Abstract:In the late 1620s the Neapolitan telescope maker Francesco Fontana was the first to observe the sky using a telescope with two convex lenses, which he had manufactured himself. Fontana succeeded in drawing the most accurate maps of the Moon's surface of his time, which were to become popular through a number of publications spread all over Europe but without acknowledging the author. At the end of 1645, in a state of declining health and pressed by the need to defend his authorship, Fontana carried out an intense observational campaign, whose results he hurriedly collected in his Novae Coelestium Terrestriumque rerum Observationis (1646), the only book he left to posterity. Fontana observed the Moon's main craters, as the crater Tycho which he named Fons Major, their radial patterns and the change in their positions due to the Moon's motions. He observed the gibbosity of Mars at quadrature and, together with the Jesuit G.B. Zupus, he described the phases of Mercury. Fontana observed the two - and occasionally three - major bands of Jupiter, and inferred the rotation movement of the major planets Mars, Jupiter and Saturn, arguing that they could not be attached to an Aristotelian sky. He came close to revealing the ring structure of Saturn. He also suggested the presence of additional moons around Jupiter, Venus and Saturn, which prompted a debate that lasted more than a hundred years. In several places of his book Fontana repeatedly claimed to have conceived the first positive eyepiece in 1608, providing a declaration by Zupus to have used his telescope since 1614. This declaration is still the oldest record mentioning such a device. We finally suggest that the telescopes depicted in the two Allegory of Sight by J. Brueghel the Elder belonging to Albert VII might have been made by Fontana, and that he might have inspired the Sight by Jusepe Ribera (c. 1616).

Sketch 'God the Father beholding dead Christ' of Vladimir L. Borovikovsky as a synthesis of the western European and the Orthodox tradition

Abstract:Vladimir Lukich Borovikovsky, little Russian icon painter and St. Petersburg portrait painter, combined western European painting language and the Orthodox religion in his creativity. The sources of the painter's susceptibility to western European influence lie in his Ukrainian origin — the atmosphere of active interaction of Orthodox and Catholic cultures developed in Little Russia of XVIII. At XVIII—early XIX century icon and temple painting was approaching secular art and came under influence of European baroque and academism. Religious painting, that is the subject of the study, occupied an important place in the creativity of the painter. Master's icons and pictures demonstrate nontrivial iconographic, conceptual and dogmatic solutions. The sketch 'God the Father beholding dead Christ' from collection of the State Tretyakov Gallery is example of an original thought of the artist, who based it on the western European composition scheme, but gave it new meaning. The study theme is exploring features of interpretation by V. Borovikovsky of Catholic the Holy Trinity iconography. In order to identify specific motifs and ideas borrowed from Western European art and the Orthodox iconography of the Otechestvo (the Fatherland), which influenced the composition of the sketch, a comparative iconographic and stylistic analysis of works with similar iconography was carried out: with a fresco from the church in Marino (Rome) attributed to Guidoreni, and a painting by P.P. Rubens 'The Holy Trinity'. The iconographic analysis showed connection between of the sketch and wester European scheme 'God the Father contemplating the dead Christ', which goes back to iconographies 'God the Father holding a Crucifix' and Pieta, and to orthodox iconography Otechestvo. V. Borovikovsky rethinks traditional motifs, typical for the European painting (motifs of parental grief and reminder of sinfulness) and for the Orthodox icon painting (motifs of triumph over death). Stylistic analysis showed that the master formulates his own interpretation of the images of God the Father and God the Son, unifying both the Orthodox and the western European approaches. V. Borovikovsky borrows reception of relationship the Sabaoth and Christ as loving the Father and the Son, but doesn't borrow tragic reception of the plot, replacing it with the idea of the comprehensive divine love and the triumph over death. Thus, V. Borovikovsky combines icon symbolism and immediacy of realistic painting.
