Abstract:It is important to reduce Cd and As content in brown rice in contaminated paddy soils. We conducted research on the effects of rice husk ash (RHA) on the Cd and As in the rhizosphere microenvironment (soil, porewater, and iron plaque) and measured the Cd, As, and Si content in rice plants. The main elements in RHA were Si (29.64%) and O (69.17%), which had the maximum adsorption capacity for Cd was 42.49 mg/kg and for As was 18.62 mg/kg. Soil pH and available Si content increased, while soil available Cd and As decreased following application of 0.5%–2% RHA. RHA promote the transformation of Cd to insoluble fraction, while As was transformed from a poorly soluble form to a more active one. RHA reduced Cd content and increased Si content in porewater, and reduced As only at the later rice growth stages. RHA increased the amount of iron plaque, thereby decreasing the Cd content in iron plaque, while increased the As content in it. Cd and inorganic As content in brown rice were decreased, to 0.31 mg/kg and 0.18 mg/kg, respectively. The decrease of Cd in brown rice was due to the decrease of Cd mobility in soil, thereby reducing root accumulation, while the decrease of As in brown rice was affected by the transport from roots to stems. Therefore, RHA can be considered as a safe and efficient in-situ remediation amendment for Cd and As co-contaminated paddy soil.

Abstract:Rice (Oryza sativa L.) cultivation in regions marked by elevated arsenic (As) concentrations poses significant health concerns due to As uptake by the plant and its subsequent entry into the human food chain. With rice serving as a staple crop for a substantial share of the global population, addressing this issue is critical for food security. In flooded paddy soils, where As availability is pronounced, innovative strategies to reduce As uptake and enhance agricultural sustainability are mandatory. Silicon (Si) and Si nanoparticles have emerged as potential candidates to mitigate As accumulation in rice. However, their effects on As uptake exhibit complexity, influenced by initial Si levels in the soil and the amount of Si introduced through fertilization. While low Si additions may inadvertently increase As uptake, higher Si concentrations may alleviate As uptake and toxicity. The interplay among existing Si and As availability, Si supplementation, and soil biogeochemistry collectively shapes the outcome. Adding water-soluble Si fertilizers (e.g., Na2SiO3 and K2SiO3) has demonstrated efficacy in mitigating As toxicity stress in rice. Nonetheless, the expense associated with these fertilizers underscores the necessity for low cost innovative solutions. Silicate-solubilizing bacteria (SSB) resilient to As hold promise by enhancing Si availability by accelerating mineral dissolution within the rhizosphere, thereby regulating the Si biogeochemical cycle in paddy soils. Promoting SSB could make cost-effective Si sources more soluble and, consequently, managing the intricate interplay of Si's dual effects on As accumulation in rice. This review paper offers a comprehensive exploration of Si's nuanced role in modulating As uptake by rice, emphasizing the potential synergy between As-resistant SSB and Si availability enhancement. By shedding light on this interplay, we aspire to shed light on an innovative attempt for reducing As accumulation in rice while advancing agricultural sustainability.

Abstract:Chronic exposure to arsenic (As) in rice has raised many health and environmental problems. As reported, great variation exists among different rice genotypes in As uptake, translocation, and accumulation. Under hydroponic culture, we find that the Chinese wild rice (Oryza rufipogon; acc. 104624) takes up the most arsenic among tested genotypes. Of the cultivated rice, the indica cv. 93-11 has the lowest arsenic translocation factor value but accumulates the maximum concentration of arsenic followed by Nipponbare, Minghui 86, and Zhonghua 11. Higher level of arsenite concentration (50 μM) can induce extensive photosynthesis and root growth inhibition, and cause severe oxidative stress. Interestingly, external silicate (Si) supplementation has significantly increased the net photosynthetic rate, and promoted root elongation, as well as strongly ameliorated the oxidative stress by increasing the activities of antioxidant enzymes superoxide dismutase, ascorbate peroxidase, and peroxidase in roots and/or leaves of 93-11 seedlings. Notably, 1.873 mM concentration of Si considerably decreases the total As uptake and As content in roots, but significantly increases the As translocation from roots to shoots. In contrast, Si supplementation with 1.0 mM concentration significantly increases the total As uptake and As concentrations in roots and shoots of 93-11 seedlings after 50 μM arsenite treatment for 6 days.
Using Rice As a Remediating Plant to Deplete Bioavailable Arsenic from Paddy Soils

Abstract:Rice plant is efficient in arsenic (As) accumulation due to enhanced soil As release under flooded condition and its effective As uptake. Therefore, rice plant can be used to remove bioavailable As from paddy soil. In this study, the depleting dynamics of soil As with rice growth was mapped two-dimensionally with the zirconium-oxide diffusive gradients in thin films (DGT) technique. Further, the key biochemistry promoting soil As bioavailability was studied to better understand the underlying processes. Results revealed that the average DGT-As encompassing the root zone decreased steeply from 331 in the seedling stage to 136 in the heading & flowering stage and further to 118 μg l−1 at harvest, which was 26% lower than that of the control at 160 μg l−1. During this process, rhizosphere porewater As developed a dynamic profile similar to Fe and dissolved organic carbon, with the diversity of arrA gene peaking at heading & flowering stage. The data support soil As release from microbial reduction of Fe hydroxides fueled by root exudation as carbon source. Arsenic was mainly accumulated in the roots, accounting for up to 95% of total As in rice plants. Removal of rice roots resulted in ~19% lower DGT-As in post-harvest soil compared to without removing the roots. As a result, a sharp decline in As accumulation in rice plants was obtained in the second planting after removing one crop of rice roots. The results highlight that rice, as a paddy-adapted plant, is effective in As uptake in the roots, and thereby removing rice roots efficiently depletes bioavailable As from paddy soils.
Effects of topdressing silicon fertilizer at key stages on uptake and accumulation of arsenic in rice

Abstract:The booting stage and filling stage have been considered as the key stages for arsenic (As) uptake in rice. In this study, a field study was conducted to investigate the influence of the topdressing different amounts of silicon (Si) fertilizer at the key stages on rice As uptake and accumulation. The results showed that topdressing of a low amount of Si fertilizer at the booting stage and filling stage could increase rice yield, promote the formation of iron plaque and the retention of As on iron plaque, and reduce inorganic As content in brown rice. Compared with the control, the rice grain yield was increased by 22.60% with the topdressing of 20 kg·hm−2 Si fertilizer at the grain filling stage. As compared with the control, the Fe and As content in iron plaque under the topdressing of 20 kg·hm−2 Si fertilizer at the booting stage and filling stage was significantly (p < 0.05) increased by 84.34% and 87.78% (Fe content) and 70.96% and 63.80% (As content), respectively. Meanwhile, contents of As in rice roots, stems, and husks at the topdressing of 20 kg·hm−2 Si fertilizer at the booting stage were significantly (p < 0.05) reduced by 45.10%, 33.34%, and 31.23%, respectively, relative to the control. The lowest inorganic As content (0.21 mg·kg−1) in brown rice was obtained at the topdressing of 20 kg·hm−2 Si fertilizer at the booting stage, which was close to the National Food Limit Standard of 0.20 mg·kg−1 (GB 2762–2017). Therefore, topdressing of 20 kg·hm−2 Si fertilizer at the booting stage might be considered as an effective method to reduce inorganic As content in brown rice.

Abstract:Microbial mechanism of in-situ remediation of arsenic (As) in As-contaminated paddy fields by silicon (Si) fertilization has been rarely reported, especially under continuous rice cultivation and Si applications. In this study, two Si fertilizers were applied for three phases in five consecutive rice seasons to investigate the long-lasting impacts on in-situ remediation of As, and the underpinning microbial mechanism of root-associated compartments (bulk soil, rhizosphere and endosphere) was explored using the last double-cropping rice. Repeated application of Si fertilizers as base manure had a long-lasting effect on reducing As concentrations in rice grains. Application of Si fertilizer at an adequate amount resulted in an extended in-situ remediation effect from endosphere to rhizosphere. The microbial diversity and richness in rhizosphere soil and endosphere were significantly impacted by Si fertilization, the effects depending on application doses and prolonged seasons. Si fertilization can immobilize As in the root or rhizosphere, and Fe concentrations and the As- and Fe-transforming microorganisms (i.e. Geobacteraceae) are the determinants of As uptake in rice. We recommend more extensive supplementation of Si fertilizer at a higher rate to decrease grain As concentration for in-situ remediation. This study sheds light on the microbial-mediated mechanism underlying Si fertilization effect on decreased As uptake in paddy fields.
Microbe mediated immobilization of arsenic in the rice rhizosphere after incorporation of silica impregnated biochar composites

Abstract:This study mechanistically addressed for the first time, the contradiction between the application of many biochars to paddy soil and increased arsenic (As) release as employed by most of previous studies. Three types of biochar containing natural and chemical forms of Si: (i) unmodified rice husk biochar (RHBC), (ii) RHBC modified with Si fertilizer (Si-RHBC), and (iii) RHBC modified with nanoparticles of montmorillonite clay (NM-RHBC) were applied in As-contaminated paddy soil to examine their potential to control the mobility of As in the soil-microbe-rice system. Both Si-RHBC and NM-RHBC decreased As concentration in porewater by 40-65%, while RHBC decreased by 30-44% compared to biochar unamended soil from tillering to maturing stage. At tillering stage, RHBC, Si-RHBC and NM-RHBC amendments significantly decreased As(III) concentration in the rice rhizosphere by 57, 76 and 73%, respectively compared to the control soil. The immobilization of As is due to: (i) lowering of microbe mediated As release from iron minerals, (ii) oxidation of As(III) to As(V) by aioA gene, and (iii) adsorption on a Si-ferrihydrite complex. The decrease of more toxic As(III) and its oxidation to less mobile As(V) by Si-rich biochar amendments is a promising As detoxification phenomenon in the rice rhizosphere.

Abstract:Although silicon (Si) transporters-mediated uptake of arsenic (As) by rice roots is well-documented, how Si influences As behaviors in rhizosphere and rhizoplane before As entry into roots is still unclear. Here we used three rice genotypes to explore the effect of silicic acid on the root uptake of As as impacted by chemical and microbial changes in bulk soil, rhizosphere, rhizoplane and endosphere. The results show that exogenous Si decreased root arsenite [As(III)] absorption, which was attributed to Si-mediated alteration of traits in chemical plaque and microbial films on the rhizoplane. The pH, Eh, As and Fe in the porewater were not influenced by Si. However, Si enhanced the concentrations of As(III) (16-49%) and Fe (15-80%) in the rhizoplane while decreasing As(III) concentrations in the roots (19-39%) and grains (22-29%). The diversities and richness of microbes in soils and plants were not affected by Si. The microbial connections were negatively influenced by Si in bulk and rhizosphere soils, but positively impacted in rhizoplane and endosphere. Both the abundance of reducing microbes, Anaeromyxobacter and Geobacteraceae, and the level of As(III) and Fe in rhizoplane were significantly increased by the addition of Si, thereby restraining As(III) from uptake into roots. This study provides new insights into the microbial mechanisms of Si-mediated As uptake by rice.
Water Management of Alternate Wetting and Drying Combined with Phosphate Application Reduced Lead and Arsenic Accumulation in Rice.

Abstract:Lead (Pb) and arsenic (As) exist in soil with different ionic forms, and it is difficult to immobilize simultaneously Pb and As in soil. The objective of this study is to determine the effects of water management including flooding (FL), alternate wetting and drying (AWD) and dry farming (DF) combined with addition of phosphate (P) on the accumulation of Pb and As in rice. Our results showed that Pb accumulated in root during vegetative stage, and most of As in root was transported to the above ground parts during the reproductive stage. Pb was evenly distributed in grains, and As was mostly accumulated in bran and aleurone layer. Water management had a reverse effect on the accumulation of Pb and As in rice. However, the effects of P on arid soil environment and Pb, As accumulation in rice were stronger than that in flooded soil. Application of P under AWD treatment could maintain a similar quantity of Fe plaque with flooding, decrease the availability of Pb in rhizosphere soil, reduce Pb and As accumulation in root, and result in the reduction of Pb and As accumulation in grains by 86% and 66% respectively. Besides, our study also found that flooding or AWD during vegetative stage facilitated the formation of iron plaque. In conclusion, AWD combined with P application could maintain a relatively lower concentrations of Pb and As in grains.
Silica nanoparticles inhibit arsenic uptake into rice suspension cells via improving pectin synthesis and the mechanical force of the cell wall

Abstract:Our previous studies indicated that the foliar application of silica nanoparticles (SiO2 NPs) could obviously reduce arsenic (As) accumulation in rice. However, the mechanism underlying this effect at the single-cell level has not been reported. In this study, we investigated for the first time the effects of SiO2 NPs on inhibiting As uptake into rice using individual rice cells. The results indicated that the addition of SiO2 NPs could enhance the proportion of live cells by weakening oxidative stress upon As exposure. Compared to the treatment of cells with As only, treatment with SiO2 NPs could maintain the integrity of the cell, increase the thickness of the cell wall (77.4%) and the ratio of As in the pectin (19.6%). In addition, the pectin content, cation exchange capacity (CEC) and pectin methylesterase (PME) activity were also increased in the SiO2 NPs-pretreated cells, leading to a decreased degree of pectin methylesterification and an improved mechanical force of the cell walls. Furthermore, in the SiO2 NPs-pretreated rice cells, the expression of the OsLis1 and OsLis2 genes was lower, whereas the expression of the OsNIP1;1 and OsNIP3;3 genes was higher than that of the As-only group. This finding provides new insights into the mechanism of how the addition of SiO2 NPs inhibits As uptake into rice at the single-cell level and lays the foundation for its application in As-contaminated paddy soil.
Extracellular Silicon (si) Nanocoating Induced by Cationic Polymers Enhances Heavy Metal Resistance in Both Si-accumulating and Non-Si-accumulating Plants

Abstract:Heavy metal contamination poses a significant threat to food security, requiring the development of plant protection measures. Silicon (Si) deposition on rice roots can inhibit the uptake and translocation of heavy metal ions. However, the slow process of Si polymerization limits its utilization by many plants. This study explored the use of cation-induced silicic acid polymerization to rapidly form extracellular Si nanocoatings on plant roots using ten cationic polymeric materials. Performance, safety, and cost-effectiveness were comprehensively evaluated in enhancing rice's resistance to heavy metals, particularly trivalent chromium. Guar hydroxypropyl trimonium chloride (GHPT) showed the most promising results among the materials studied. A treatment procedure involving immersion in GHPT and silicic acid was found to be effective when repeated twice for 20 min each time. This method effectively doubled Si concentration in rice roots and reduced shoot chromium concentration by 67%. Furthermore, this approach was successfully applied to pakchoi, enabling Si utilization in this non-Si-accumulating plant. The Si concentration in pakchoi roots increased to levels similar to rice (1577.5 mu g/g), and shoot chromium concentration decreased by 75.0%, accompanied by a 66.2% reduction in chromium translocation factor. These findings provide a safe, economical and practical solution to reduce heavy metal stress.
Arsenic Contents, Speciation and Toxicity in Germinated Rice Alleviated by Selenium

Abstract:Rice can accumulate more organic and inorganic arsenic (iAs) than other crop plants. In this study, the localization of As in rice grains was investigated using High Performance Liquid Chromatography-Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (HPLC-ICP-MS) based on 26 rice varieties collected from two provinces. In all the samples, the total As contents in polished rice were 0.03-0.37 mg/kg, with average values of 0.28 and 0.21 mg/kg for two sample sets. The results of the determination of arsenic speciation in different components of rice grain showed that in the polished and brown rice the mean value of arsenite (As(III)) was nearly twice than that of arsenate (As(V)). The regional difference was observed in both total As contents and As speciation. The reason may be that As(III) is more mobile than As(V) in a dissociated form and because of soil properties, rice varieties, and the growing environment. The proportion of iAs and the total As in rice bran was higher than that in polished rice, and this is because As tends accumulate between the husk and the endosperm. In our study, selenium could alleviate the risk of arsenic toxicity at the primary stage of rice growth. Co-exposure to As and Se in germinated rice indicated that the reduction in As accumulation in polished rice reached 73.8%, 76.8%, and 78.3% for total As, As(III), and As(V) when compared with rice treated with As alone. The addition of Se (0.3 mg/kg) along with As significantly reduced the As amount in different parts of germinated rice. Our results indicated that Se biofortification could alleviate the As accumulation and toxicity in rice crops.
Sulfur reduces arsenic accumulation in rice shoot by enhancing root retention and altering arsenic metabolism

Abstract:Rice can potentially pose serious health risks due to its higher arsenic (As) uptake. Sulfur (S) is not only an essential macronutrient, but it also has the ability to decrease As accumulation. In the present study, a hydroponic experiment was conducted to investigate the mechanisms underlying the effects of S on the As uptake and transport at different S (pre-)treatments and additional supply levels. It was found that additional S supply decreased As content by 20%–50% in both S-deficient and S-normal pre-treated shoots compared to the no S supply throughout the treatment; As root-to-shoot translocation factors was reduced by 7%–46% with S supply. On the one hand, additional S supply could elevate levels of thiol compounds (by 15%–280%) and increase the As percentage in soluble cytosol of roots. Additional S supply also enhanced the casparian strip development of rice roots, which could block As transfer in roots apoplast pathway. Moreover, additional S supply lead to the down-regulation of OsLsi2 expression (e.g., reduced by 71% by S at 2 mmol L −1 with the S-normal pre-treatment). Sulfur also promoted the biotransformation of As(III) in shoots into less toxic As species; reducing the As(III) proportion by 25% by 2 mmol L −1 of S under S-normal pre-treatment. These results suggest that S could play an important role in the inhibition of As transfer and the detoxification of As in rice by enhancing root retention (the vacuole sequestration), impeding transportation pathway of root apoplast, and regulating As-related gene expression. Thus, providing a basis for the potential application of S in rice production in As-contaminated paddy soil.

Abstract:Cadmium (Cd) and arsenic (As) are precedence-controlled contaminants in paddy soils, that can easily accumulate in rice grains. Limestone and sepiolite (LS) compound passivator can obviously reduce Cd uptake in rice, whereas Si fertilizer can effectively decrease rice As uptake. Here, the synergistic effects of the LS compound passivator coupled with Si fertilizer (LSCS) on the soil pH and availability of Si, Cd, and As, as well as rice grain Cd and As accumulation and its health risk were studied based on a 3-year consecutive field experiment. The results showed that the LSCS performed the best in terms of synchronously decreasing soil Cd and As availability and rice Cd and As uptake. In the LSCS treatments, soil pH gradually decreased with the rice-planting season, while soil available Cd and As contents gradually increased, suggesting that the influence of LSCS on Cd and As availability gradually weakened with rice cultivation. Nonetheless, the contents of Cd and inorganic As (i-As) in rice grains treated with LSCS were slightly affected by cultivation but were significantly lower than the single treatments of LS compound passivator or Si fertilizer. According to the Cd and As limit standards in food (GB2762-2022), the Cd and i-As content in rice grains can be lowered below the standard by using the 4500 kg/hm 2 LS compound passivator coupled with 90 kg/hm 2 Si fertilizer in soil and spraying 0.4 g/L Si fertilizer on rice leaves for at least three years. Furthermore, health risk evaluation revealed that LSCS treatments significantly reduced the estimated daily intake, annual excess lifetime cancer risk, and hazard quotient of Cd and i-As in rice grains. These findings suggest that LSCS could be a viable approach for reducing Cd and As accumulation in rice grains and lowering the potential health risks associated with rice.

Effectiveness of nanomaterials and their counterparts in improving rice growth and yield under arsenic contamination

Abstract:Arsenic (As) pollution in rice ( Oryza sativa L.), a staple food for over 3.5 billion people, is a global problem. Mixed effects of Zn, Cu, and Si amendments on plant growth and yield, including in the presence of As pollution have been reported in previous studies. To better investigate the effectiveness of these amendments on rice growth, yield, and As accumulation, we conducted a rice greenhouse experiment with 11 treatments, including control pots with and without As contamination and pots with amendments of ZnO, CuO, and SiO 2 nanoparticles (ZnO NPs, CuO NPs, and SiO 2 NPs), their ionic counterparts (ZnSO 4 , CuSO 4 , and Na 2 SiO 3 ), and bulk particles (ZnO BPs, CuO BPs, and SiO 2 BPs). Compared with the background soil, the treatment of adding As decreased rice plant height, panicle number, and grain yield by 16.5%, 50%, and 85.7%, respectively, but significantly increased the As accumulation in milled rice grains by 3.2 times. Under As contamination, the application of Zn amendments increased rice grain yield by 4.6–7.3 times; among the three Zn amendments, ZnSO 4 performed best by fully recovering grain yield to the background level and significantly reducing grain As III /total As ratio by 46.9%. Under As contamination, the application of Cu amendments increased grain yield by 3.8–5.6 times; all three Cu amendments significantly reduced grain As III /total As ratio by 20.2–65.6%. The results reveal that Zn and Cu amendments could promote rice yield and prevent As accumulation in rice grains under As contamination. Despite the observed reduction in As toxicity by the tested NPs, they do not offer more advantages over their ionic counterparts and bulk particles in promoting rice growth under As contamination. Future field research using a broader range of rice varieties, investigating various As concentrations, and encompassing diverse climate conditions will be necessary to validate our findings in achieving more extensive understanding of effective management of arsenic contaminated rice field.

Abstract:Accumulation of arsenite [As(III)] and dimethylarsinic acid (DMA) in rice grainsposes a threat to human health. Although silicon (Si) has been reported to reduce As uptake, the mechanisms involved are not fully understood. In this study, we first confirmed that the concurrent addition of Si and As in solution decreased As accumulation in rice. Then, the effect of Si previously deposited in shoots by the pretreatment of rice seedlings with Si for one week was investigated by using lsi2 mutant and its wild type. The uptake of both As(III) and DMA decreased in rice subjected concurrently to Si and As (III)/DMA in solution, without effects on OsLsi1 and OsLsi2 expression. This concurrent treatment also decreased total As concentration in the root cell walls and xylem sap, which might have restrained apoplastic transport of As to shoots. Silicon previously deposited in the shoots decreased root-to-shoot As(III) translocation and down-regulated OsLsi1, OsLsi2 and OsNRAMP1, but did not affect As concentration in the roots, and had no effect on DMA uptake and accumulation in shoots and roots either. This study sheds light on the role of silicon in solution and rice shoots in As(Ⅲ) and DMA uptake and transport by rice.

[Effect of Application of Silicon on Arsenic Uptake by Rice Seedlings in Soil].

Abstract:The objective of study was to investigate effect of silicon on arsenic uptake by rice seedlings in two soils with different arsenic concentrations. The results show that the addition of silicon has little effect on shoot and root dry weights of rice seedlings. The addition of silicon did not affect shoot and root P concentrations of rice seedlings grown in low arsenic soil, but significantly increased shoot P concentrations on rice grown in high arsenic soil. Irrespective of the initial pH of K2SiO3 solution, the addition of silicon significantly decreased shoot and root As concentrations of rice seedlings compared with the control. For seedlings grown in low As-contaminated soil, As concentrations in shoot and root were reduced by 36%-59% and 15%-37% with the application of silicon, respectively. For seedlings grown in high As-contaminated soil, As concentrations in shoot and root were reduced by 42%-58% and 70%-82% with the application of silicon, respectively. These results are in agreement with our previous reports based on a solution culture experiment. Possible mechanisms of the effect of Si on As uptake was also discussed.

Abstract:Arsenic (As) pollution in agricultural systems poses a serious threat to crop productivity and food safety. Silicon (Si) has been reported to mitigate toxic effects of heavy metals in plants. However, the mechanisms behind Si-mediated alleviation of As toxicity in rice ( Oryza sativa L.) remain poorly understood. Here, we performed metagenomic and biochemical analyses to investigate the potential of Si in alleviating As toxicity to rice plants. As exposure reduced plant growth, chlorophyll contents, antioxidant enzyme levels and soil enzymes activity, while increasing reactive oxygen species (ROS) activity and inducing alterations in the rhizosphere microbiome of rice seedlings. Silicon amendments enhanced rice growth (24%), chlorophyll a (25%), and chlorophyll b (26.7%), indicating enhanced photosynthetic capacity. Si amendments also led to the upregulation of antioxidant enzymes viz., superoxide dismutase (15.4%), and peroxidase (15.6%), resulting in reduced ROS activity and oxidative stress compared to the As-treated control. Furthermore, Si treatment reduced uptake and translocation of As in rice plants, as evidenced by the analysis of elemental contents. Microscopic examination of leaf and root ultrastructure showed that Si mitigated As-induced cellular damage and maintained normal morphology. Metagenomic analysis of the rice rhizosphere microbiome revealed that Si application modulated composition and diversity of microbial communities e.g., Proteobacteria, Actinobacteria, and Firmicutes. Additionally, Si amendments upregulated the relative expression levels of OsGSH, OsPCs, OsNIP1;1 and OsNIP3;3 genes, while the expression levels of the OsLis1 and OsLis2 genes were significantly downregulated compared with As-treated rice plants. Overall, these findings contribute to our understanding of Si-mediated plant resilience to As stress and offer potential strategies for sustainable agriculture in As-contaminated regions.
