Abstract:In this study, we reported a highly sensitive nonenzymatic glucose sensor based on Cu/Cu2O composite nanoparticles (Cu/Cu2O NPs) decorated on a single carbon fiber (SCF) by direct in-situ electrochemical cyclic voltammetry deposition. The scanning electron microscopy (SEM) study of the Cu/Cu2O NPs/SCF electrodes displayed a porous structure of Cu/Cu2O nanoparticles with an average size of around 30 nm, which greatly increased the surface area of single carbon fiber and provided a large number of catalysis sites towards glucose oxidation. The electrochemical behavior of Cu/Cu2O nanoparticles was characterized by cyclic voltammetry and amperometry study, in which the as-prepared electrode displayed superior catalytic performance and exhibited an ultra-high sensitivity (28,071 uA mM(-1) cm(-2)) anda wide linear range up to 7.8 mM. The in-situ electrodeposition of Cu/Cu2O nanoparticles and excellent conductivity of carbon fiber improved the electron transfer rate due to direct electron collection and resulted in a short response time (<1 s). Additionally, the electrode also showed good reproducibility, outstanding anti-interference ability and long-time stability, as well as a reliable testing result in bovine serum sample, indicating a potential application in clinical diagnosis and health monitoring.
Controllable morphology engineering of Cu 2 O nanoparticles for non-enzymatic glucose sensing

Abstract:The controllable morphology engineering of active electrode materials is an effective strategy to obtain high performance non-enzymatic glucose sensing. Herein, different morphologic cuprous oxide (Cu 2 O nanospheres, nanocubes and microcubes) were controllably prepared by wet-chemistry precipitation technique through adjusting the OH − concentration. The growth and evolution mechanism of Cu 2 O at different OH − concentrations were extensively studied. Electrochemical testing revealed that Cu 2 O nanospheres had the highest sensitivity of 1438 μA mM −1 cm −2 and the lowest detection limit of 0.17 μM (S/N = 3), making them the best choice for glucose sensing. Additionally, the glucose detection range spanned two orders of concentration magnitude (0.5 μM–1.332 mM and 1.332 mM–3.832 mM), and the sensor displayed excellent anti-interference ability, reproducibility, and long-term stability. The electrode material also performed well in detecting glucose in real serum samples, indicating its practical applicability as a non-enzymatic sensor.

In Situ Oxidation of Cu2O Crystal for Electrochemical Detection of Glucose

Abstract:The development of a sensitive, quick-responding, and robust glucose sensor is consistently pursued for use in numerous applications. Here, we propose a new method for preparing a Cu2O electrode for the electrochemical detection of glucose concentration. The Cu2O glucose electrode was prepared by in situ electrical oxidation in an alkaline solution, in which Cu2O nanoparticles were deposited on the electrode surface to form a thin film, followed by the growth of Cu(OH)2 nanorods or nanotubes. The morphology and electrocatalytic activity of a Cu2O glucose electrode can be tuned by the current density, reaction time, and NaOH concentration. The results from XRD, SEM, and a Raman spectrum show that the electrode surface was coated with cubic Cu2O nanoparticles with diameters ranging from 50 to 150 nm. The electrode exhibited a detection limit of 0.0275 mM, a peak sensitivity of 2524.9 μA·cm−2·mM−1, and a linear response range from 0.1 to 1 mM. The presence of high concentrations of ascorbic acid, uric acid, dopamine and lactose appeared to have no effects on the detection of glucose, indicating a high specificity and robustness of this electrode.

Abstract:It is essential to discover an affordable electrode for the glucose detection application, which can be easily prepared. In this regard, we report a novel non-enzymatic glucose sensor that utilizes a free-standing electrode with a hybrid structure consisting of nanoporous CuZn/CuO nanoparticle (NPC/CuO). This electrode was fabricated through the process of dealloying the Zn 80 Cu 20 precursor alloy and subsequent natural oxidation. We conducted a thorough investigation of the phase structure and morphology evolution. The results revealed that the NPC/CuO composite-based glucose biosensor displayed remarkable electrocatalytic activity toward glucose oxidation, exhibiting a high sensitivity of 2.33 mAcm −2 mM −1 , wide linear range from 0 to 3.5 mM, low detection limit of 2.42 μM, excellent selectivity and suitable stability. These outstanding characteristics were attributed to the combined effect of the electroactive CuO and the nanoporous structure. These findings highlight that NPC/CuO composites have the potential to replace expensive noble metal biosensors in non-enzymatic glucose detection. By leveraging the cooperative effect of the nanostructure and copper oxide, these composites offer promising prospects for future development in this field.

Abstract:The glucose sensitivity achieved with copper(II) oxide particles with three different morphologies (spheres, platelets, and needles) for application in nonenzymatic glucose sensors was investigated. The morphologies of CuO nanoparticles were controlled by different synthesis parameters, including changes in precipitators of Cu(II) ions, pH values, calcination protocol, and the addition of surfactant and hydrogen peroxide. The role of copper(II) oxide particle morphology in nonenzymatic glucose sensing was studied. The primary driving factor in the electrocatalytic process was investigated for several morphological properties of the material. We studied the effects of exposed crystal faces, specific surface area, pore volume, and grain size of copper oxides on glucose sensitivity. This study showed that the electrocatalytic performance in glucose sensing correlates primarily with the grain size of copper oxide nanoparticles and the capacitance introduced therefrom. The needle-shaped CuO nanoparticles presented the optimal morphology in this application, resulting in good sensitivity to glucose (2.05 mA·mM–1·cm–2), a linear range of 0.05–5 mM glucose, and the best long-term stability among these materials. This work provides insight into the potential use of CuO-based materials in biosensors and into the major contributing factors of metal oxide-based nanoparticles in sensing applications.

Abstract:In this work, the electrochemical deposition of Cu2O microcrystals was investigated at glassy carbon (GC) electrode. Besides octahedral and microspherical Cu2O, a novel superoctahedral structure was fabricated via controlling the reduction potential, and the transforming process from octahedral to microspherical structure was also examined. The possible growth mechanism was discussed here, and the growing rates played an important part on the morphology. The non-enzymatic glucose detection based on the as-prepared Cu2O microspheres modified GC (Cu2O-GC) electrode was also presented, which exhibited excellent operation stability and good linear dependence on glucose concentration from 10 mu M to 5 mM and the calibration equation was I (mu A) = 4.56 + 5.01 x 10(-3) C (mu M) with a correlation coefficient of 0.9995.

Abstract:Copper-doped zinc oxide nanoparticles (NPs) CuxZn1−xO (x = 0, 0.01, 0.02, 0.03, and 0.04) were synthesized via a sol-gel process and used as an active electrode material to fabricate a non-enzymatic electrochemical sensor for the detection of glucose. Their structure, composition, and chemical properties were characterized using X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) and Raman spectroscopies, and zeta potential measurements. The electrochemical characterization of the sensors was studied using cyclic voltammetry (CV), electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), and differential pulse voltammetry (DPV). Cu doping was shown to improve the electrocatalytic activity for the oxidation of glucose, which resulted from the accelerated electron transfer and greatly improved electrochemical conductivity. The experimental conditions for the detection of glucose were optimized: a linear dependence between the glucose concentration and current intensity was established in the range from 1 nM to 100 μM with a limit of detection of 0.7 nM. The proposed sensor exhibited high selectivity for glucose in the presence of various interfering species. The developed sensor was also successfully tested for the detection of glucose in human serum samples.

Abstract:Novel metasequoia-leaf-like Cu/Cu 2 O/Ni(OH) 2 on a glassy carbon electrode (GCE) was used for non-enzymatic glucose detection using an easy, one-step electrodeposition technique. The direct electrodeposition method is conducive to shifting electrons in a binder-free electrode, and increasing the appropriate deposition voltage can obtain material in 15 s. Furthermore, the metasequoia-leaf-like construction has many dynamic locales for synergistic glucose oxidation, which may advance the dispersion rate of glucose. The research shows that the glucose detection sensitivity of the Cu/Cu 2 O/Ni(OH) 2 electrode is 5737.5 μA mM -1 cm -2 and 4676.0 μA mM -1 cm -2 , corresponding to the dynamic linear ranges 1 μM to 1 mM and 1 mM to 5 mM. In addition, the electrode shows good repeatability, reproducibility, stability, and selectivity. Furthermore, the electrode has been successfully utilized to detect glucose in human serum, confirming that the Cu/Cu 2 O/Ni(OH) 2 electrode can identify glucose.

Abstract:The optimization of sensing material nanostructures can improve the interfacial properties sensing materials, which is an effective tactic for enhancing the sensing performance of materials. In this study, different CuO nanostructures were in situ grown onto N-doped carbon cloth (NCC) by hydrothermal method as modified electrodes for glucose sensor. The use of NCC endowed the electrodes with excellent flexibility and conductivity, and also provided more attachment points for the growth of CuO nanostructures. Meanwhile, CuO nanostructures could be regulated by the addition of organic acid as structural inducers, and the glucose sensing performances of electrodes modified by different CuO nanostructures were studied. The results showed that CuO nanostructures were uniformly grown on NCC, and the optimized CuO nanostructure had a smaller size and a higher electrochemical active area. The modified electrode with the optimized CuO nanostructures exhibited good electrochemical performances, high sensitivity of 6.408 mA cm −2 mM −1 , low detection limit of 0.33 μM and excellent stability for glucose sensing. This work presents an effective and simple method for preparing flexible self-supporting electrodes with controllable nanostructures and good interface properties, expanding a potential pathway for the development of flexible glucose sensor.

Abstract:In situ synthesis of Ag-doped CuO microflowers on multilayer graphene (MLG) and their application in non-enzymatic detection of glucose are studied here. Mechanically exfoliated MLG has particular advantages such as low defects and cost efficiency. However, the deposition of CuO on its surface is still a challenge due to the lack of active sites on the MLG surface. In this work, a one-step chemical bath deposition approach is developed to synthesize homogeneous CuO microflowers and Ag-doped CuO microflowers on MLG surfaces. The CuO structures are composed of ultra-small CuO nano-spindles and internal nano-gaps. The materials are well characterized by x-ray diffraction (XRD), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) and energy-dispersive spectrometry (EDS) and evaluated as glucose sensors. The electrode of Ag-doped CuO microflowers on MLG exhibits a sensitivity of 1527 μA mM−1cm−2 in a linear response range of 0.01 mM ~ 6.0 mM with an excellent selectivity and a long-term stability. The composite is a promising material for glucose sensors due to its facile synthesis and highly detective performance.

Abstract:Enzyme-free determination of glucose on an ordered CuO nanowall-based Cu substrate modified electrode is investigated. The structure and morphology of the CuO nanowalls were characterized by X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy. The growth mechanism of the sample and the influence factor of the preparation process are discussed. The electrochemical study has shown that the CuO nanowalls exhibit a higher catalytic effect on the glucose than the CuO nanosphere without Cu substrate. This may be attributed to the special structure of the nanomaterials and the substrate of the electronic conductive Cu. The amperometric response showed that the CuO nanowall-modified glassy carbon electrode has a good response for glucose with a linear range of 0.05 μM to 10 μM with a sensitivity of 0.5563 μA μM−1 in pH 9.2 phosphate buffered solutions.

Abstract:CuO/Ni(OH)(2)/carbon cloth (CuO/Ni(OH)(2)/CC) was successfully prepared by one-step solvothermal method. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscope (XPS) results confirm the co-existence of CuO and Ni (OH)(2). Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) images indicate that there is existence of CuO cubes and nanoparticles on Ni(OH)(2) nanosheets. Electrochemical measurements suggest that obtained CuO/Ni(OH)(2)/CC composite electrode exhibits a wider linear range (0.05-8.50 mM), a higher sensitivity (598.6 mu A mM(-1) cm(-2)) and a low detection limit of 0.31 mu M (S/N = 3). Additionally, good selectivity against common interferents, long-time stability and practical applicability for glucose detection demonstrate that the CuO/Ni(OH)(2)/CC is a promising electrode for non-enzymatic glucose sensing.
Rational Design of Yolk-Shell CuO/Silicalite-1@mSiO(2) Composites for a High-Performance Nonenzymatic Glucose Biosensor

Abstract:In this study, an interface coassembly strategy is employed to rationally synthesize a yolk-shell CuO/silicalite-1@void@mSiO(2) composite consisting of silicalite-1 supported CuO nanoparticles confined in the hollow space of mesoporous silica, and the obtained composite materials were used as a novel nonenzymatic biosensor for highly sensitive and selective detecting glucose with excellent anti-interference ability. The synthesis of CuO/silicalite-1@mSiO(2) includes four steps: coating silicalite-1 particles with resorcinol-formaldehyde polymer (RF), immobilization of copper species, interface deposition of a mesoporous silica layer, and final calcination in air to decompose RF and form CuO nanoparticles. The unique hierarchical porous structure with mesopores and micropores is beneficial to selectively enrich glucose for fast oxidation into gluconic acid. Besides, the mesopores in the silica shell can effectively inhibit the large interfering substances or biomacromolecules diffusing into the void as well as the loss of CuO nanoparticles. The hollow chamber inside serves as a nanoreactor for glucose oxidation catalyzed by the active CuO nanoparticles, which are spatially accessible for glucose molecules. The nonenzymatic glucose biosensors based on CuO/silicalite-1@mSiO(2) materials show excellent electrocatalytic sensing performance with a wide linear range (5-500 mu M), high sensitivity (5.5 mu A.mM(-1).cm(-2)), low detection limit (0.17 mu M), and high selectivity against interfering species. Furthermore, the unique sensors even display a good capability in the determination of glucose in real blood serum samples.

Abstract:In the field of glucose sensors, the development of inexpensive and high-efficiency electrochemical glucose sensors is the current research hotspot. In this paper, CuO–Co3O4 composite with a prickly-sphere-like morphology is prepared by the facile hydrothermal method for the non-enzymatic electrochemical glucose detection. X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy are used to analyze the structure, composition, and morphology of the material. In addition, the electrochemical catalytic performance of CuO–Co3O4 to glucose is obtained by cyclic voltammetry and chronoamperometry. The excellent electrochemical sensing performance may be attributed to the large number of catalytic sites in the prickly-sphere-like composite and the synergistic effect of Cu and Co. Under an applied voltage of 0.55 V, CuO–Co3O4 composite shows sensitivity to glucose (1503.45 μA·(mmol·L−1)−1·cm−2), a low detection limit (21.95 μmol·L−1), excellent selectivity, a high level of reproducibility, and good stability. This indicates that the CuO–Co3O4 composite has a broad prospect of non-enzymatic glucose sensing application.Graphical abstract

Cu₂O-Au nanocomposites for enzyme-free glucose sensing with enhanced performances

Abstract:A facile method for the synthesis of Cu(2)O-Au nanocomposites has been reported by injecting Cu(2)O nanocubes into Au precursor directly with the assistance of ultrasound radiation at room temperature. The ultrasound radiation is not a necessary requirement but can make the distribution of Au nanoparticles more homogenous. The formation of Cu(2)O-Au nanocomposites is attributed to following two reasons. The first one is the difference in the reduction potential between Cu(2+)/Cu(2)O and AuCl(4)(-)/Au, which can also be considered as the driving force for the redox reaction. The other one is the low lattice mismatch between (200) planes of Cu(2)O and (200) facets of Au, which is favorable for the formation of heterostructure. The electrochemical investigation demonstrates that the performances of Cu(2)O nanocubes in enzyme-free glucose sensing have been improved significantly after the decoration of Au nanoparticles which may be derived from the polarization effect provided by Au nanoparticles. As-prepared Cu(2)O-Au nanocomposites have great potential in enzyme-free glucose sensing.

Abstract:Accurate glucose sensing in complex biological fluids could enable diagnostics for home healthcare. However, glucose oxidase (GOx) has been suffered from poor reproducibility and chemical instability due to intrinsic nature of enzymes. Here, we report a free-standing and robust reduced graphene oxide wrapped Cu foam (rGO/CuF)-supported Cu2O nanowires (Cu2O NWs) with exposed {111} facet via facile electrodeposition route. When being used as an electrode for nonenzymic glucose detection, Cu2O /CuF exhibited the distinguished performances with powerful reliability for analyzing human plasma and even whole blood samples. These unprecedented performances could be ascribed to nanoscale hydrophilic structure of Cu2O NWs, which could control the fouling level especially for protein. Moreover, taking into account the Cu2O NWs with exposed {111} facet, Cu2O NWs {111} could reduce ion diffusion distance and couple with improved electronic conductivity, thus leading to high glucose sensitivity. Through the theoretical calculations, a reliable interpretation of the catalytic mechanism with Cu2O NWs {111} has been provided. This study deepens the understanding of hydrophilic nanostructure and facet-dependent activity of Cu2O NWs and points out a strategy to improve their sensitivity and stability.

Abstract: In this work, ZnO–CuO composite porous spheres with core–shell structure were successfully synthesized through a controllable simple top-down route to take advantage of the excellent features of ZnO and CuO. The crystal structure and morphology of the as-prepared products were characterized, and a possible growth mechanism was proposed. The obtained sample with a core surrounded by a porous shell has a large surface area. As CuO can well catalyze glucose in alkaline solution, together with the good electron transfer property of ZnO and the hetero-junction formed between them, non-enzymatic glucose sensors based on ZnO–CuO composite porous spheres show good performance with a wide linear range of 0.02–4.86 mM, a high sensitivity of 1,217.4 μA cm−2 mM−1, and a low detection limit of 1.677 μM, indicating a good detection behavior of glucose.

As an example of application, we explored the potential of these materials in developing electrocatalytic devices. Cu(2)O particles were synthesized in various shapes, then used for testing their morphology-dependent electrochemical properties applied to the detection of glucose. While we did not attempt to obtain the best detection limit reported to date, the octahedral and hexapod Cu(2)O particles showed reasonable detection limits of 0.51 and 0.60 mM, respectively, which are physiologically relevant concentrations. However, detection limit seems to be less affected by particle shapes than sensitivity. Heterogeneous systems where Au NPs were deposited on the surface of Cu(2)O particles were also tested with similar results in terms of the effect of surface orientation.

Abstract:Electrochemical non-enzyme sensors based on metal and metal oxide nanocomposites are still a new challenge and a huge potential area. In this work, a ternary flower-like Cu2O-Cu-Au (CCAu) was designed and constructed as electrochemical material for glucose detection. In which, under the combined action of hydroxide ions and persulfate ions, several micrometer-long radial Cu(OH)2 branches were grown on the surface of the Cu sphere precursor. And then Au nanoparticles decorated Cu2O-Cu ternary nanocomposites formed by heat treatment and surface loading. As active materials for the electrochemical non-enzymatic glucose detection, the CCAu modified electrode showed a sensitivity of 1.082 mAmM−1cm−2 and a detection limit of 1.71 uM. The good performance of CCAu/GCE can be attributed to the compound and synergistic effect of Cu and Cu2O builds a mixed valence Cu0/Cu+, the special surface area and triple active substances with many active centers, and the dendritic structure which is conducive for the penetration of electrolyte. In addition, the CCAu electrode showed a performance comparable to that of a commercial analyzer in testing the blood glucose concentration in human serum, indicating that it has a great potential in the practical electrochemical sensors.

Abstract:The direct growth of transition metal phosphides with a highly accessible surfaces and copper electroactive centers can be considered as an efficient method to modify the electrode surface and use them as an electrochemical sensor. Herein, a direct, efficient, low-cost and rapid method is used for growing core–shell nanostructures of CuCoP nanosheets on Cu(OH)2 nanotubes (pre-deposited on glassy carbon electrode). The Cu(OH)2 nanotubes act as a conductive intermediate and directing agent to obtain CuCoP@Cu(OH)2 core–shell structure. The growth of CuCoP on Cu(OH)2 nanotubes provides structural stability and large surface area as well as increases the availability of the catalytic sites for diffusion of analyte species and electrolyte ions into the electrode surface, leading to excellent electrocatalytic performance towards glucose electro-oxidation. The amperometric studies of glucose for electrode modified with CuCoP@Cu(OH)2 showed two linear ranges of 0.001 mM to 0.105 mM and 0.105 mM to 2.530 mM with very high sensitivities of 8351 and 3932 μA/mM.cm2, respectively. Also, the fabricated sensing platform exhibited excellent selectivity and resistance to chloride ion poisoning, good reproducibility and repeatability, as well as low detection limit of 2.3 μM. In addition, the modified electrode showed a very quick reaction time of 2 s. Finally, to assess the usability of the designed non-enzymatic sensor in practical applications, the as-prepared nanocomposite was examined for measuring the glucose content in biological samples such as human blood serum, saliva, and beverage samples. The outcomes showed that the designed platform can be used as a reliable and efficient sensor for accurate detection and measurement of glucose in real samples.
