Abstract:The objective of this study was to investigate the variations in nutrient digestibility, rumen fermentation, serum biochemical parameters, and performance resulting from an increase in the proportion of ramie (Boehmeria nivea) substitution for alfalfa in the diets of goats. In a completely randomized block design, thirty-two Liuyang black goats were divided into two blocks according to body weight (BW) (light, BW: 16.7 ± 1.72 kg; and heavy, BW: 26.6 ± 2.95 kg). Then, the sixteen goats in each block were further randomly divided into four subgroups that randomly accepted four treatments, i.e., alfalfa was replaced by ramie at 0%, 35%, 70% and 100%. The results showed that the apparent digestibility of gross energy (GE) (linear, p < 0.05), crude protein (CP) (linear, p < 0.01), neutral detergent fiber (NDF) (linear, p < 0.01), acid detergent fiber (ADF) (linear, p < 0.001), ash (linear, p < 0.001) and Ca (linear, p < 0.001) decreased with the increase in the proportion of ramie, while phosphorous (P) digestibility increased (linear, p < 0.001) with the increment in the proportion of dietary ramie. The concentration of total volatile fatty acid (TVFA) and the proportion of individual volatile fatty acids were unaffected (p> 0.05) by the inclusion of ramie. The concentration of ammonia nitrogen (NH3-N) in the rumen fluid decreased (linear, p < 0.01) with increasing dietary ramie level. The increasing proportion of dietary ramie caused a decrease (linear, p < 0.001; quadratic, p < 0.001) in the body weight gain of the goats. The serum concentration of triglyceride (TG) (quadratic, p < 0.05), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDLC) (quadratic, p < 0.05), albumin (ALB) (linear, p < 0.05; quadratic, p < 0.05), calcium (Ca) (quadratic, p < 0.05) and alkaline phosphatase (ALP) increased by increasing the percentage of ramie in the diet of goats. The current results indicate that a higher proportion of dietary alfalfa replaced by ramie decreases nutrient digestion, body weight gain and calcium level. The proper proportion of ramie used in the diets of growing goats is no more than 126 g/kg dry matter (DM).

Abstract:The objective was to evaluate the effects of ramie conserved as forage supplementation on growth, digestion, and meat quality of Liuyang black castrated goats in a 60 days feedlot study. Forty-eight goats were randomly assigned to each of four treatments: 24% rice straw + 36% ramie residues silage + 40% concentrate; 24% rice straw + 36% raw ramie silage + 40% concentrate; 24% rice straw + 36% ramie residues hay + 40% concentrate; 24% rice straw + 36% raw ramie hay + 40% concentrate. There was an increased tendency for ADG in ramie hay treatment than that of ramie silage treatment (p = 0.067). There was an increase for the apparent digestibility of DM, CP, NDF, and ADF in the ramie hay treatment than that of ramie silage treatment (p ≤ 0.034). An increased tendency was found for C18:1n-9c (% of total fatty acids) in the longissimus dorsi muscle of raw ramie treatment versus ramie residues treatment (p ≤ 0.087). These results indicate that the ramie hay or raw ramie treatment had a tendency for improving the nutrient digestibility and meat quality of goats than that of ramie silage or ramie residues treatment, respectively.

Abstract:This study was conducted to evaluate the use of ramie as forage on growth performance, serum biochemical indices, and meat quality of Boer goats. For this, 60 Boer lambs were divided into four groups fed the TMR with 0%, 10%, 20%, and 40% (control, and groups I, II, III, respectively) ramie. The experiment lasted for 90 days with a pretest for 15 days. Venous blood and longissimus dorsi (LD) muscle samples were collected after 24 h fasted at the end of the experiment. The results showed that ramie seems no significant changes in average daily gain (ADG) and other parameters for growth performance, only 40% ramie in TMR significantly reduced average daily feed intake (ADFI) (P < 0.05). Compared to the control, group II (20%) showed significant increases in total protein (TP) and globulin (GLB) levels, and decreases in albumin/globulin level (P < 0.05) in serum. Meanwhile, serum total cholesterol (TC) (P < 0.05) and free thyroxine (FT4) level were significantly reduced with up to 20% or more ramie in TMR. Moreover, the total amino acid and flavor amino acid levels in LD muscle were not affected by ramie. However, significant increases (P < 0.05) were observed in linoleic acid, polyunsaturated fatty acid, and polyunsaturated fatty acid/saturated fatty acid levels in group II. Overall, these results indicated that up to 20% ramie in TMR have no impairment in growth performance, health and meat quality, whereas high level ramie might have a negative effect on feed intake.

Abstract:This study investigated the effects of ramie (0, 3, 6, 9, or 12%) included in finishing diets on carcass traits and meat quality of Xiangcun black pigs. Results showed that ramie decreased (linear, P < .05) backfat depth while it increased (linear, P < .05) loin-eye area. A quadratic effect of shear force in longissimus thoracis (LT) was observed, and the lowest value was noted in the 6% ramie group. Protein content in LT was linearly increased by ramie (linear, P < .01). Meanwhile, dietary ramie linearly decreased lipogenic genes mRNA levels and fiber cross-sectional area, but it linearly increased total fiber number of LT. These results suggest that ramie included in the diet <9% is an effective feed crop to partly improve carcass trait and muscle chemical composition without negatively affecting growth performance, and the underlying mechanism may be due to the changed lipogenic potential and myofiber characteristics induced by ramie.

Abstract:The study aimed to investigate the nutritional value of ramie (Boehmeria nivea) silage, and its consequences for chewing activity, rumen fermentation, and enteric methane (CH4) emissions in goats, by comparing it with corn stover (CS) silage. An in vitro ruminal experiment was firstly performed to investigate the substrate degradation and fermentation of CS and ramie silage. The ramie silage diet was formulated by replacing 60% of CS silage with ramie silage (dry matter (DM) basis). Eight female Xiangdong Black goats (a local breed in Southern China, 1 to 1.2 years of age) with BW of 21.0 ± 1.05 kg were used for this experiment and were randomly assigned to either one of the two dietary treatments in a cross-over design. The ramie silage had higher crude protein (CP) and ash content and lower hemicellulose content, together with decreased (p < 0.05) nutrient degradation and methane production and increased (p < 0.05) acetate molar percentage and acetate to propionate ratio through in vitro ruminal fermentation. Feeding the ramie silage diet did not alter feed intake (p > 0.05), decreased (p < 0.05) nutrient digestibility, and increased (p < 0.05) chewing activity and rumination activity, with reductions (p < 0.05) in eating activity and idle activity. Although feeding the ramie silage diet caused a greater (p < 0.05) molar percentage of acetate and lower molar percentage of propionate, it decreased the rumen-dissolved CH4 concentration and enteric CH4 emissions (p < 0.05). Feeding the ramie silage diet did not alter (p > 0.05) the population of bacteria, protozoa, and fungi; it increased the 16S rRNA gene copies of Ruminococcus flavefaciens (p < 0.05). Further 16SrRNA gene amplicon analysis indicated a distinct bacterial composition between the two treatments (p < 0.05). Feeding the ramie silage diet led to a lower abundance of genera Lawsonibacter, Sedimentibacter, Saccharofermentans, Sediminibacterium, and Bifidobacterium (p < 0.05). Ramie can be an alternative forage resource to stimulate chewing activity and reduce CH4 emissions in ruminants.

Abstract:An in vivo experiment was conducted to study the effects of granulated rape straw feed on the produc-tive performance,nutrient utilization,rumen fermentation parameters,and blood biochemical indexes of Hu sheep.Thirty 6-month-old healthy Hu sheep (32.33±1.65 kg)were equally divided into two groups based on their body weights.One group was fed on pelleted peanut vine feed (control group),and the other was fed on pelleted rape straw feed.The total feeding period lasted 52 days.The average daily weight gain,feed conver-sion ratio,rumen fermentation parameters,feed apparent digestibility,and blood biochemical indexes were measured.The results showed that,compared with the control group,the group fed with pelleted rape straw showed a significantly lower (P <0.05)dry matter intake (1.37 kg versus 1.47 kg),but similar average daily weight gain (147 g vs.143 g).The pelleted rape straw feed increased the levels of total volatile fatty acids (102.27 mmol/L vs.90.44 mmol/L)(P <0.05 ),propionate (17.08 mmol/L vs.13.79 mmol/L)(P <0.01),butyrate (11.97 mmol/L vs.10.31 mmol/L)(P < 0.01 ),and NH 3-N (15.90 mg/dL vs.11.33 mg/dL)(P <0.01),and decreased the acetate to propionate ratio (3.96 vs.4.33)(P <0.01).The apparent total tract digestibility of neutral detergent fiber (P =0.09)showed an increasing trend in the group fed with pelleted rape straw (54.75% vs.51.50%).The pelleted rape straw feed significantly increased the concentra-tion of glucose (3.77 mmol/L vs.2.97 mmol/L)(P <0.05),and decreased the concentrations of blood urea nitrogen (11.01 mmol/L vs.12.80 mmol/L)(P < 0.01 ),free fatty acids (133.07 umol/L vs.144.50 umol/L)(P <0.05),alanine aminotransferase (14.85 U/L vs.19.23 U/L)(P <0.05),and high-density lipo-protein (0.92 mmol/L vs.1.05 mmol/L)(P <0.05).The cost per kg weight gain was 5.87 yuan lower in the experimental group than in the control group.In summary,feeding growing Hu sheep with pelleted rape straw had no adverse effects on their health and reduced feed costs,and could therefore improve breeding efficiency. Rape is a rich forage source in the areas where Hu sheep are farmed,and the use of rape straw as feed is a promising strategy to reduce regional rape straw pollution.

Abstract:In this experiment,the effect of Asparagus officinalis stem leaf silage ration on the productive performance,rumen fermentation parameters and blood indices in growing Hu sheep was explored.Thirty-six Hu sheep weighted (19.46 t 2.07) kg were divided into two groups.The specific ration of either the treated group or the control group,in each the energy and protein were basically the same,was designed based on the feeding standard of sheep (2004).The treated group was fed on the A.officinalis stem leaf silage ration and the control group was fed on the peanut vine ration.The feeding assay lasted 60 days,when the digestion and metabolism experiment were conducted,and the pre-experiment period was 7 days.The body weight of sheep was measured at both the beginning and end of the trial,and rumen fluid and blood were collected at the end of the experiment.The results showed that there was no significant difference in average daily growth,relative growth or feed intake/daily weight gain (P＞0.05) between the treated group and the control group,which raised the economic benefits by reducing the cost of average daily weight gain.The experiment ration group,significantly decreased the concentration of acetate and the acetate/propionate (P＜0.05),which had no significant effect on the content of MCP,NH3-N,propionate,butyrate (P＞0.05),and also significantly reduced the concentration ofALB (P＜0.05),but had no prominent effect on TP,GLOB,GLU,CHOL,TG,NEFA,TBIL,CREA,ALT,AST,SOD (P＞0.05).In summary,the A.officinalis stem leaf silage ration had little effect on the growth performance of growing Hu sheep and could improve the economic benefit,indicating that the cheap plant had a good application prospect.

Abstract:This experiment was conducted to examine the effects of substituting mixed silage (fresh ramie: dry rice straw = 80: 20; kg: kg) composed of fresh forage ramie, also known as 'China grass', Boehmeria nivea L. Gaud (a nettle native to Asia) and rice straw for corn silage and alfalfa hay on the production performance, milk components, rumen fermentation parameters, and nutrient digestion in dairy cows. Thirty multiparous Chinese Holstein cows (629 ± 59.2 kg of BW, 25 ± 4.7 kg of milk yield, and 100 ± 18 DIM; mean ± SD) were randomly divided into three groups. The experimental treatments containing three diets, each consisting of differing proportions of mixed silage (0%, 10%, and 20%, designated as CON, MS1, and MS2, respectively) as a substitution for corn silage and alfalfa hay. There were no effects of mixed silage diets on dry matter intake (DMI), 3.5% fat-corrected milk (FCM) yield, milk protein percentage, milk somatic cell count, and milk urea nitrogen (MUN), but linearly increased total solids ( p = .03) and milk fat percentage ( p = .001) in cows fed the MS1 and MS2 diets. Feeding mixed silage diets linearly reduced milk yield ( p = .01) and milk lactose percentage ( p = .01), and had linearly increased rumen pH values ( p = .01). There were no observable differences in other rumen fermentation parameters between the mixed silage and control diets. Mixed silage diets exhibited increased DM digestibility (linearly, p = .04; quadratically, p = .017) and linearly decreased crude protein digestibility ( p = .05), but we observed no differences in the apparent total-tract digestibility of EE, NDF, and ADF between the control and mixed silage diets. In conclusion, using ramie and rice straw mixed silage proved beneficial by increasing milk fat percentage, milk solids, and DM digestibility, ramie could be used as a potential forage resource in dairy cow diets. Productive and Metabolic Increments of the Inclusion of Broussonetia Papyrifera to Replace Maize Silage in Growing Goats

Abstract:The study was conducted to investigate the effects of Broussonetia papyrifera (BP) on growth performance, rumen fermentation, digestion and meat quality in Huanghuai white goats. Diets were developed with increasing doses of BP to replace maize silage [0% (control), 15% (BP15), 30% (BP30) and 45% (BP45)]. The design was completely randomized with 4 groups of 10 animals each, totalizing 40 animals (aged 150 ± 10 days and body weight of 25.32 ± 0.52 kg). Final body weight, average daily gain and average daily feed intake increased (linear and quadratic, P < 0.05) as BP increased in the diet. The highest body weight and average daily gain were seen in the BP30 group. Feed conversion ratio also improved significantly (linear and quadratic, P < 0.05) with the increasing level of BP. Although the concentration of microbial protein (MCP) in a linear (P = 0.0028) and quadratic (P = 0.0035) fashion with increasing level of BP, however, NH3-N in a quadratic (P = 0.0841) fashion with increasing level of BP. Crude protein was increased with increasing BP in the diets (linear and quadratic, P < 0.05). Nitrogen intake, urinary excretion nitrogen and nitrogen retention were significantly improved (linear and quadratic, P < 0.05) with dietary BP addition in goats. Dietary BP supplementation increased pH (linear and quadratic, P < 0.05) and tended to reduce L* (lightness) (linear and quadratic, P < 0.05). Additionally, the redness value of meat was significantly improved by BP addition (linear and quadratic, P < 0.05). The inclusion of BP in the goat diet promotes growth and increases the digestibility of crude protein in addition to improving the meat colour and rumen fermentation.

Abstract:Ramie ( Boehmeria nivea ), which is rich in protein, fatty acid, vitamins and minerals, has become a potential alternative feed resource for poultry, and has attracted more and more attentions in nutrition research. The objective of this study is to evaluate the effect of dietary ramie at different concentrations on the production performance of the hens, and the quality, nutrient composition, and antioxidation of the eggs. A total of 432 34-week-old Lohmann commercial laying hens were divided into four groups, that were fed with corn-soybean meal-based control diet, control mixed with ramie at concentrations of 3, 6, or 9% separately for 8 weeks. Results showed that dietary ramie did not affect production performance. And egg yolk color gradually deepened as the inclusion levels of ramie increased. Ramie at tested concentration could significantly reduce the content of malondialdehyde (MDA) ( p = 0.002) and 3% ramie supplementation significantly increased total antioxidative capacity (T-AOC) concentrations in egg yolk compared to the control group ( p = 0.033). In addition, dietary supplementation with 6% ramie significantly reduced total cholesterol (T-CHO) content ( p < 0.05) compared with controls. For egg nutrient composition, compared with the control group, the addition of 6% ramie significantly increased ( p < 0.05) total omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (n-3PUFA) and phenylalanine (Phe) in yolk. In conclusion, dietary inclusion of 6% ramie was most effective in improving the color, antioxidative capability, and reducing T-CHO contents of the egg yolks without any negative impacts on the production performance of the hens.

Abstract:To investigate the effects of different levels of ramie powder (Boehmeria nivea (L.) Gaudich.) (i.e., 0%, 6%, 12% and 24%) on the production performance, serum biochemical indices, antioxidative capacity and intestinal development of Yanling white geese, a total of 256 geese at 56 days of age were randomly divided into four groups and fed a control diet and the control diet supplemented with 6%, 12% and 24% ramie powder, respectively, for 42 days. The results show that dietary supplementation with 12% ramie powder significantly increased the average final weight (p < 0.05) and tended to improve the average daily gain (ADG) and feed/gain ratio (F/G) of the test geese (0.05 < p < 0.10). Moreover, the dietary inclusion of 12 and 24% ramie powder improved meat qualities by reducing the L* value (p < 0.05) and cooking loss (0.05 < p < 0.10) of thigh muscle. Compared with the control group, the ramie powder supplementation at different levels increased the serum activities of glutathione peroxidase and glutathione, promoting the antioxidative capacity of the body (0.05 < p < 0.10). This study demonstrates that moderate ramie powder is beneficial to the production performance of Yanling white geese and has the potential to be used as a poultry feed ingredient. In conclusion, 12% was the proper supplementation rate of ramie powder in Yanling white geese feed.

Abstract:Tropical and subtropical regions were quite short of high-quality protein forage. Ramie (Boehmeria nivea L. Gaud) leaves as crop by products, are rich in protein and widely cultivated in tropical and subtropical regions. Thence, the development and utilization of ramie is of great significance to animal production in these regions. But it contained high level of tannins and total phenols, which may produce potentially adverse effect. It is very essential to evaluate the safety of ramie leaves before they are used as feed supplements. To evaluate potential toxic level of ramie leaf, control group, low dose and high dose (0, 1, 2 g/kg·BW) groups of ramie leaf were conducted orally in Sprague-Dawley rats (SD rats). Body weight, hematology, and histopathology was assessed during 28 d of treatment and 14 d of recovery period. The results showed that there were no toxic symptoms appeared in the treated and control groups. There were a few individual indicators showed abnormal, but most indices of body weight, organ weight ratios and hematology were normal. And compared to control group, it showed no significant differences (P>0.05). Histopathological examination of the high dose group and control group showed that there was no lesions related to ramie administration. The pathological changes appeared in the liver, and lungs of rats in individual rat of both groups were common and spontaneous, and had no significant differences (P>0.05). These results suggest that under this experimental condition, up to 2 g/kg·BW intragastric administration of ramie leaf did not produce adverse effect to SD rats. These findings would provide available information for ramie leaf to utilize as a feed supplement, particularly in P.R. China.

Effects of forage type on the rumen microbiota, growth performance, carcass traits, and meat quality in fattening goats

Abstract:Forages fed to goats influence ruminal microbiota, and further contribute to affect growth performance, meat quality and its nutritional composition. Our objective for current study was to investigate the effects of different forages on growth performance, carcass traits, meat nutritional composition, rumen microflora, and the relationships between key bacteria and amino acids and fatty acids in the longissimus dorsi and semimembranosus muscles of goats. Boer crossbred goats were separately fed commercial concentrate diet supplemented with Hemarthria altissima (HA), Pennisetum sinese (PS), or forage maize (FG), and then slaughtered 90 days after the beginning of the experiment. Growth performances did not vary but carcass traits of dressing percentage, semi-eviscerated slaughter percentage, and eviscerated slaughter percentage displayed significant difference with the treatment studied. Meats from goats fed forage maize, especially semimembranosus muscles are rich in essential amino acids, as well as an increase in the amount of beneficial fatty acids. Our 16S rRNA gene sequencing results showed that the Firmicutes, Bacteroidetes, and Proteobacteria were the most dominant phyla in all groups but different in relative abundance. Further, the taxonomic analysis and linear discriminant analysis effect size (LEfSe) identified the specific taxa that were differentially represented among three forage treatments. The spearman's correlation analysis showed that rumen microbiota was significantly associated with the goat meat nutritional composition, and more significant positive correlations were identified in semimembranosus muscles when compared with longissimus dorsi muscles. More specifically, the lipid metabolism-related bacteria Rikenellaceae_RC9_gut_group showed positively correlated with meat amino acid profile, while genera Oscillospiraceae_UCG-005 were positively correlated with fatty acid composition. These bacteria genera might have the potential to improve nutritional value and meat quality. Collectively, our results showed that different forages alter the carcass traits, meat nutritional composition, and rumen microflora in fattening goats, and forage maize induced an improvement in its nutritional value.

Abstract:This study was conducted to evaluate the effects of exogenous fibrolytic enzymes (EFE) supplementation into diets with different non-fiber carbohydrates (NFC)/neutral detergent fiber (NDF) ratios on growth performance, nutrient digestibility, ruminal fermentation, and micro biome in Chinese domesticated Lezhi black goats. Treatments were 2 x 2 factorial arrangement of diets using low vs. high NFC/NDF ratios (1.06 or 1.66) and with or without EFE supplementation (0 or 0.4 g cellulase and xylanase/kg dry matter of diet). Sixty four Lezhi black goats (11 +/- 0.8 kg of live weight) were randomly assigned to the four treatments. High NFC/NDF ratio and EFE supplementation achieved greater average daily gain and improve feed conversion ratio (P < .05). The same treatments also significantly increased digestibility of organic matter (OM), acid detergent fiber (ADF) and NDF. In addition, the high NFC/NDF ratio diet, but not the EFE supplement, improved digestibility of crude protein (CP) and reduced ruminal pH (P < .001). Both high NFC/NDF ratio and EFE supplement decreased ruminal NH3-N concentrations significantly (P < .001), and increased the production of rumen total volatile fatty acids (VFA, P < .001), especially the molar proportion of propionate (P < .05). They reduced the molar proportion of acetate and thus the ratio of acetate to propionate (A: P) (P < .05). Both the high NFC/NDF ratio and the EFE supplement elevated the levels of microbial crude proteins (P < .01). Importantly, the combination of high NFC/NDF ratio and the EFE supplement diet raised the content of the microbial crude proteins to the highest levels among the 4 different treatment groups (P = .012). However, the high NFC/NDF ratio and the EFE supplementation had different impacts on fiber degrading activities. The high NFC/NDF ratio diet decreased, while EFE supplementation increased, the activities of cellulase and xylanase (P < .05). Among the three cellulytic bacteria detected (Ruminococcus albus, Ruminococcus flavefaciens, Fibrobacter succinogenes), only the abundance of Fibrobacter succinogenes was significantly decreased with the high NFC/NDF ratio (P = .004). These results illustrate that the diet with a high NFC/NDF ratio and EFE supplementation can improve ADG, feed conversion ratio and nutrient utilizationin Lezhi black goats. These improvements are likely attributed to the elevated production of microbial crude proteins and a shift in the molar proportions of VFA in the rumen, rather than increase of cellulolytic bacteria in the rumen microbiota.

Abstract:Current experiment was designed to check the effect of dietary supplementation of ramie powder on the growth performance, carcass and meat qualities and antioxidative capacity of Linwu ducks. A total of 312 ducks at 21-day-age were equally divided into 4 groups, fed with control diet, control diet supplemented of 3, 6, or 12% ramie powder, respectively. The results showed that dietary supplementation of 6 and 12% ramie powder increased the final weight and daily body weight gain ( P < 0.05), and dietary supplementation of 6% ramie improved the cooking loss of the leg meat 45-mins-postmortem compared with the control group ( P < 0.05). Moreover, dietary supplementation of 6% ramie powder promoted the antioxidative capacity of the ducks by increasing the serum activities of superoxide dismutase and glutathione ( P < 0.05), as well as the mRNA expressions of glutathione peroxidase 1 in the breast meat and superoxide dismutase 1 in the leg meat ( P < 0.05). This experiment demonstrated that dietary supplementation of ramie powder showed beneficial efficacy on the growth performance of Linwu ducks. It corroborated the potential of dietary ramie being used as poultry feed ingredient and suggested that 6% was the proper supplementation rate of ramie powder in Linwu ducks’ feed.

Abstract:The presence of unintegrated viral DNA has been reported in cells persistently infected by lentiviruses, including human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1). We confirm that CD8+ cells can be productively and persistently infected by HIV-1 for up to 4 months, as determined by secretion of viral core antigen p24 into the extracellular medium and by indirect immunofluorescence. The expression of the external viral glycoprotein gp120 at the surface of these cells was demonstrated by two-colour flow cytometry. Progeny virions recovered from CD8+ cells were infectious in CD4+ T cells. Despite an absence of significant cytopathology, these chronically infected CD8+ cells were shown to harbour unintegrated HIV-1 DNA, as detected by quantitative PCR. Both linear and circular forms of the extrachromosomal viral genome were present in infected CD8+ cells, as early as 3 weeks before a peak in viral replication. These findings provide evidence that the presence of unintegrated viral DNA during lentiviral infection may not always correlate with c.p.e.

Abstract:The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of ramie (0, 3, 6, and 9%) included in diets on production performance, antioxidative capacity, serum biochemical indices, and intestinal development of laying hens. A total of 432 Lohmann commercial laying hens were randomly allotted to one of four dietary treatments and fed for 6 weeks. The results showed that the inclusion of ramie had no negative effects on laying performance, and increased (quadratic, P < 0.05) the laying rate with the highest value in the 6% ramie group. However, ramie content in the diet up to 9% reduced the apparent metabolic energy, dry matter, and organic matter apparent digestibility of laying hens compared with those in the 3% ramie group. The content of high-density lipoprotein (HDL-C) in serum was increased ( P < 0.05), but the activity of aspartate aminotransferase (AST) was decreased ( P < 0.05) by dietary ramie supplementation. As the dietary ramie level increased, the activity of serum glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) was increased quadratically ( P < 0.05). Compared with control, 3% ramie group significantly increased ( P < 0.01) liver total superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity. Meanwhile, the addition of 3∼6% ramie powder increased ( P < 0.05) villus height of jejunum and villus height/crypt depth (V/C) of ileum, which reflected the intestinal promotional effect of ramie powder. In conclusion, ramie in a diet of less than 9% might protect the liver and improve the antioxidative capacity with no detrimental impacts on the laying hens. Moreover, it could promote the intestinal mucosal structure and have a positive impact on the intestine health of the laying hens.
