Abstract:This study investigated the effects of ramie (0, 3, 6, 9, or 12%) included in finishing diets on carcass traits and meat quality of Xiangcun black pigs. Results showed that ramie decreased (linear, P < .05) backfat depth while it increased (linear, P < .05) loin-eye area. A quadratic effect of shear force in longissimus thoracis (LT) was observed, and the lowest value was noted in the 6% ramie group. Protein content in LT was linearly increased by ramie (linear, P < .01). Meanwhile, dietary ramie linearly decreased lipogenic genes mRNA levels and fiber cross-sectional area, but it linearly increased total fiber number of LT. These results suggest that ramie included in the diet <9% is an effective feed crop to partly improve carcass trait and muscle chemical composition without negatively affecting growth performance, and the underlying mechanism may be due to the changed lipogenic potential and myofiber characteristics induced by ramie.

Abstract:The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of ramie (0, 3, 6, and 9%) included in diets on production performance, antioxidative capacity, serum biochemical indices, and intestinal development of laying hens. A total of 432 Lohmann commercial laying hens were randomly allotted to one of four dietary treatments and fed for 6 weeks. The results showed that the inclusion of ramie had no negative effects on laying performance, and increased (quadratic, P < 0.05) the laying rate with the highest value in the 6% ramie group. However, ramie content in the diet up to 9% reduced the apparent metabolic energy, dry matter, and organic matter apparent digestibility of laying hens compared with those in the 3% ramie group. The content of high-density lipoprotein (HDL-C) in serum was increased ( P < 0.05), but the activity of aspartate aminotransferase (AST) was decreased ( P < 0.05) by dietary ramie supplementation. As the dietary ramie level increased, the activity of serum glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) was increased quadratically ( P < 0.05). Compared with control, 3% ramie group significantly increased ( P < 0.01) liver total superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity. Meanwhile, the addition of 3∼6% ramie powder increased ( P < 0.05) villus height of jejunum and villus height/crypt depth (V/C) of ileum, which reflected the intestinal promotional effect of ramie powder. In conclusion, ramie in a diet of less than 9% might protect the liver and improve the antioxidative capacity with no detrimental impacts on the laying hens. Moreover, it could promote the intestinal mucosal structure and have a positive impact on the intestine health of the laying hens.

Abstract:Current experiment was designed to check the effect of dietary supplementation of ramie powder on the growth performance, carcass and meat qualities and antioxidative capacity of Linwu ducks. A total of 312 ducks at 21-day-age were equally divided into 4 groups, fed with control diet, control diet supplemented of 3, 6, or 12% ramie powder, respectively. The results showed that dietary supplementation of 6 and 12% ramie powder increased the final weight and daily body weight gain ( P < 0.05), and dietary supplementation of 6% ramie improved the cooking loss of the leg meat 45-mins-postmortem compared with the control group ( P < 0.05). Moreover, dietary supplementation of 6% ramie powder promoted the antioxidative capacity of the ducks by increasing the serum activities of superoxide dismutase and glutathione ( P < 0.05), as well as the mRNA expressions of glutathione peroxidase 1 in the breast meat and superoxide dismutase 1 in the leg meat ( P < 0.05). This experiment demonstrated that dietary supplementation of ramie powder showed beneficial efficacy on the growth performance of Linwu ducks. It corroborated the potential of dietary ramie being used as poultry feed ingredient and suggested that 6% was the proper supplementation rate of ramie powder in Linwu ducks’ feed.

Abstract:To investigate the effects of different levels of ramie powder (Boehmeria nivea (L.) Gaudich.) (i.e., 0%, 6%, 12% and 24%) on the production performance, serum biochemical indices, antioxidative capacity and intestinal development of Yanling white geese, a total of 256 geese at 56 days of age were randomly divided into four groups and fed a control diet and the control diet supplemented with 6%, 12% and 24% ramie powder, respectively, for 42 days. The results show that dietary supplementation with 12% ramie powder significantly increased the average final weight (p < 0.05) and tended to improve the average daily gain (ADG) and feed/gain ratio (F/G) of the test geese (0.05 < p < 0.10). Moreover, the dietary inclusion of 12 and 24% ramie powder improved meat qualities by reducing the L* value (p < 0.05) and cooking loss (0.05 < p < 0.10) of thigh muscle. Compared with the control group, the ramie powder supplementation at different levels increased the serum activities of glutathione peroxidase and glutathione, promoting the antioxidative capacity of the body (0.05 < p < 0.10). This study demonstrates that moderate ramie powder is beneficial to the production performance of Yanling white geese and has the potential to be used as a poultry feed ingredient. In conclusion, 12% was the proper supplementation rate of ramie powder in Yanling white geese feed.

Abstract:Simple Summary The content of n-3 and n-6 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) in pork is linked to human health. Dietary fatty acid composition especially the n-6/n-3 PUFA ratio can affect meat quality in lean breeds of pigs. However, the effects of different dietary fatty acid composition on Chinese indigenous pig breeds are still poorly understood. In the current study, Heigai pigs were fed with different n-3/n-6 PUFA ratios diets (8:1, 5:1, and 3:1) to investigate the effects of dietary supplementation with different n-6/n-3 PUFA ratios on growth performance, meat quality, and fatty acid profiles. Low dietary n-6/n-3 PUFA ratio regulated pH and meat color of longissimus dorsi muscle (LDM), reduced triglyceride and total cholesterol contents, and enhanced the deposition of n-3 PUFA of LDM and subcutaneous adipose tissue (SAT). This study can provide an experimental reference for producing functional pork (e.g., better fatty acid composition) with the advantages of Chinese local breed pigs. The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of dietary supplementation with different n-6/n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA) ratios on growth performance, meat quality, and fatty acid profile in Heigai pigs. A total of 54 Heigai finishing pigs (body weight: 71.59 +/- 2.16 kg) were randomly divided into three treatments with six replications (three pigs per replication) and fed diets containing different n-6/n-3 PUFA ratios: 8:1, 5:1, and 3:1. Pigs fed the dietary n-6/n-3 PUFA ratio of 8:1 had the highest feed to gain ratio (p< 0.01), carcass weight (p< 0.05), redness a* (p< 0.01), and yellowness b* (p< 0.01). Fatty acid compositions in longissimus dorsi muscle (LDM) and subcutaneous adipose tissue (SAT) were significantly changed (p< 0.01). Notably, the meat from the pigs fed with the low dietary n-6/n-3 PUFA ratio had higher n-3 PUFA contents (p< 0.01) and lower n-6/n-3 PUFA ratio (p< 0.01). The triglyceride and total cholesterol contents were significantly decreased in SAT from the pigs fed with dietary n-6/n-3 PUFA ratios of 5:1 (p< 0.05) and 3:1 (p< 0.01). Reducing n-6/n-3 PUFA ratio upregulated the expression of HSL (p< 0.05), CPT1 (p< 0.01), and FABP4 (p< 0.01) but downregulated ATGL (p< 0.01) expression. These results demonstrate that the lower n-6/n-3 PUFA ratio regulates meat quality and enhances the deposition of n-3 PUFA in Heigai pigs.

Abstract:Ramie ( Boehmeria nivea ), which is rich in protein, fatty acid, vitamins and minerals, has become a potential alternative feed resource for poultry, and has attracted more and more attentions in nutrition research. The objective of this study is to evaluate the effect of dietary ramie at different concentrations on the production performance of the hens, and the quality, nutrient composition, and antioxidation of the eggs. A total of 432 34-week-old Lohmann commercial laying hens were divided into four groups, that were fed with corn-soybean meal-based control diet, control mixed with ramie at concentrations of 3, 6, or 9% separately for 8 weeks. Results showed that dietary ramie did not affect production performance. And egg yolk color gradually deepened as the inclusion levels of ramie increased. Ramie at tested concentration could significantly reduce the content of malondialdehyde (MDA) ( p = 0.002) and 3% ramie supplementation significantly increased total antioxidative capacity (T-AOC) concentrations in egg yolk compared to the control group ( p = 0.033). In addition, dietary supplementation with 6% ramie significantly reduced total cholesterol (T-CHO) content ( p < 0.05) compared with controls. For egg nutrient composition, compared with the control group, the addition of 6% ramie significantly increased ( p < 0.05) total omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (n-3PUFA) and phenylalanine (Phe) in yolk. In conclusion, dietary inclusion of 6% ramie was most effective in improving the color, antioxidative capability, and reducing T-CHO contents of the egg yolks without any negative impacts on the production performance of the hens.

Abstract:The objective was to evaluate the effects of ramie conserved as forage supplementation on growth, digestion, and meat quality of Liuyang black castrated goats in a 60 days feedlot study. Forty-eight goats were randomly assigned to each of four treatments: 24% rice straw + 36% ramie residues silage + 40% concentrate; 24% rice straw + 36% raw ramie silage + 40% concentrate; 24% rice straw + 36% ramie residues hay + 40% concentrate; 24% rice straw + 36% raw ramie hay + 40% concentrate. There was an increased tendency for ADG in ramie hay treatment than that of ramie silage treatment (p = 0.067). There was an increase for the apparent digestibility of DM, CP, NDF, and ADF in the ramie hay treatment than that of ramie silage treatment (p ≤ 0.034). An increased tendency was found for C18:1n-9c (% of total fatty acids) in the longissimus dorsi muscle of raw ramie treatment versus ramie residues treatment (p ≤ 0.087). These results indicate that the ramie hay or raw ramie treatment had a tendency for improving the nutrient digestibility and meat quality of goats than that of ramie silage or ramie residues treatment, respectively.

Abstract:This study was conducted to evaluate the use of ramie as forage on growth performance, serum biochemical indices, and meat quality of Boer goats. For this, 60 Boer lambs were divided into four groups fed the TMR with 0%, 10%, 20%, and 40% (control, and groups I, II, III, respectively) ramie. The experiment lasted for 90 days with a pretest for 15 days. Venous blood and longissimus dorsi (LD) muscle samples were collected after 24 h fasted at the end of the experiment. The results showed that ramie seems no significant changes in average daily gain (ADG) and other parameters for growth performance, only 40% ramie in TMR significantly reduced average daily feed intake (ADFI) (P < 0.05). Compared to the control, group II (20%) showed significant increases in total protein (TP) and globulin (GLB) levels, and decreases in albumin/globulin level (P < 0.05) in serum. Meanwhile, serum total cholesterol (TC) (P < 0.05) and free thyroxine (FT4) level were significantly reduced with up to 20% or more ramie in TMR. Moreover, the total amino acid and flavor amino acid levels in LD muscle were not affected by ramie. However, significant increases (P < 0.05) were observed in linoleic acid, polyunsaturated fatty acid, and polyunsaturated fatty acid/saturated fatty acid levels in group II. Overall, these results indicated that up to 20% ramie in TMR have no impairment in growth performance, health and meat quality, whereas high level ramie might have a negative effect on feed intake.

Abstract:Ninety-six finishing pigs were selected to study the effects of different doses of "Shiquan Dabu" Chinese herb residues on growth, carcass composition and meat quality. For the pigs treated with 0.5%, 1.0% and 1.5% of Chinese herb residue in their diet, daily gains are increased by 7.40%(P < 0.05), 12.88%(P < 0.05) and 9.75% (P < 0.05), feed gain ratios are decreased by 5.20% (P < 0.05), 7.23% (P < 0.05) and 6.07% (P < 0.05), lean meat percentages are increased by 3.86% (P > 0.05), 6.27% (P < 0.05) and 5.80% (P < 0.05), carcass fat percentages are decreased by 6.42%(P < 0.05), 9.63%(P < 0.05) and 9.30% (P < 0.05), back-fat depths are reduced by 7.20% (P < 0.05), 13.26% (P < 0.05) and 12. 12%(P < 0.05), longissimus dorsi areas are increased by 4.46%(P > 0.05), 9.24% (P < 0.05) and 6. 30% (P < 0.05), meat red color degrees are increased by 2.75% (P > 0.05), 6.67% (P<0. 05) and 3. 92% (P>0. 05), drip loss rates are decreased by 9.32% (P < 0.05), 12.42% (P < 0.05) and 8.07(P < 0.05), contents of intramuscular fat are increased by 20.80% (P < 0.05), 28.47% (P < 0.01) and 25.55% (P < 0.01) compared with the control group fed with basal diet, respectively. The results indicated that "Shiquan Dabu" Chinese herb residues could make a novel alternative feed additive and improve growth performance, carcass composition and meat quality of finishing pigs.

Abstract:Tropical and subtropical regions were quite short of high-quality protein forage. Ramie (Boehmeria nivea L. Gaud) leaves as crop by products, are rich in protein and widely cultivated in tropical and subtropical regions. Thence, the development and utilization of ramie is of great significance to animal production in these regions. But it contained high level of tannins and total phenols, which may produce potentially adverse effect. It is very essential to evaluate the safety of ramie leaves before they are used as feed supplements. To evaluate potential toxic level of ramie leaf, control group, low dose and high dose (0, 1, 2 g/kg·BW) groups of ramie leaf were conducted orally in Sprague-Dawley rats (SD rats). Body weight, hematology, and histopathology was assessed during 28 d of treatment and 14 d of recovery period. The results showed that there were no toxic symptoms appeared in the treated and control groups. There were a few individual indicators showed abnormal, but most indices of body weight, organ weight ratios and hematology were normal. And compared to control group, it showed no significant differences (P>0.05). Histopathological examination of the high dose group and control group showed that there was no lesions related to ramie administration. The pathological changes appeared in the liver, and lungs of rats in individual rat of both groups were common and spontaneous, and had no significant differences (P>0.05). These results suggest that under this experimental condition, up to 2 g/kg·BW intragastric administration of ramie leaf did not produce adverse effect to SD rats. These findings would provide available information for ramie leaf to utilize as a feed supplement, particularly in P.R. China.

Abstract:The objective of this study was to investigate the variations in nutrient digestibility, rumen fermentation, serum biochemical parameters, and performance resulting from an increase in the proportion of ramie (Boehmeria nivea) substitution for alfalfa in the diets of goats. In a completely randomized block design, thirty-two Liuyang black goats were divided into two blocks according to body weight (BW) (light, BW: 16.7 ± 1.72 kg; and heavy, BW: 26.6 ± 2.95 kg). Then, the sixteen goats in each block were further randomly divided into four subgroups that randomly accepted four treatments, i.e., alfalfa was replaced by ramie at 0%, 35%, 70% and 100%. The results showed that the apparent digestibility of gross energy (GE) (linear, p < 0.05), crude protein (CP) (linear, p < 0.01), neutral detergent fiber (NDF) (linear, p < 0.01), acid detergent fiber (ADF) (linear, p < 0.001), ash (linear, p < 0.001) and Ca (linear, p < 0.001) decreased with the increase in the proportion of ramie, while phosphorous (P) digestibility increased (linear, p < 0.001) with the increment in the proportion of dietary ramie. The concentration of total volatile fatty acid (TVFA) and the proportion of individual volatile fatty acids were unaffected (p> 0.05) by the inclusion of ramie. The concentration of ammonia nitrogen (NH3-N) in the rumen fluid decreased (linear, p < 0.01) with increasing dietary ramie level. The increasing proportion of dietary ramie caused a decrease (linear, p < 0.001; quadratic, p < 0.001) in the body weight gain of the goats. The serum concentration of triglyceride (TG) (quadratic, p < 0.05), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDLC) (quadratic, p < 0.05), albumin (ALB) (linear, p < 0.05; quadratic, p < 0.05), calcium (Ca) (quadratic, p < 0.05) and alkaline phosphatase (ALP) increased by increasing the percentage of ramie in the diet of goats. The current results indicate that a higher proportion of dietary alfalfa replaced by ramie decreases nutrient digestion, body weight gain and calcium level. The proper proportion of ramie used in the diets of growing goats is no more than 126 g/kg dry matter (DM).

Abstract:Thirty-six finishing pigs(Duroc×Landrace×Yorkshire) with similar initial body weight were randomly allocated to three groups by weigth and sex,each group had three replicates with four pigs per replicate.The control group was fed the corn-soybean meal(SBM)diet.Test group 1(double-low rapeseed meal,DL-RSM group) used 13 % double-low rapeseed meal instead of 11 % SBM of the control group diet.In test group 2(DL-RSM+Enzymes group),0.03 % complex enzymes(cellulase 10000 IU/g,xylanase 6000 IU/g,mannanase 5000 IU/g,protease 12000 IU/g) were supplemented on the basis of DL-RSM group' diet.The feeding experiment lasted for 51 days,after 7 days of adaptation period.The results showed that different treatment diets had no significant effect on the growth performance and feed utilization of the finishing pigs(P > 0.05);comparing with the control group,the serum IgA,IgG,IgM,C3 and C4 levels decreased by 15.87 %(P < 0.01),12.40 %(P < 0.01),10.34 %(P < 0.05),20.55 %(P < 0.01) and 17.78 %(P < 0.01) in the finishing pigs of the DL-RSM group.Compared to the DL-RSM group,adding compound enzymes increased the serum IgA,IgG,IgM,C3 and C4 levels of the finishing pigs by 37.74 %(P < 0.01),27.43 %(P < 0.01),28.85 %(P < 0.01),41.38 %(P < 0.01) and 32.43 %(P < 0.01),respectively;different treatment diets had no significant effects on serum antioxidant indicators and Ca,P,BUN level(P > 0.05).
Evaluation of Extruded or Unextruded Double-Low Rapeseed Meal and Multienzymes Preparation in Pigs Nutrition During the Finishing Phase of Production

Abstract:The aim of this study was to compare the effects of extruded or non-extruded double-low rapeseed meal (DL-RSM) and multienzyme preparation on performance, nutrient digestibility, immune function and antioxidant status of the finishing pigs. Forty-eight pigs (Duroc×Landrace×Yorkshire) with an average weight of 62 kg were randomly divided into four groups with three replicates according to gender. Four diets were formulated to meet NRC (1998) nutrient requirements. Diet 1, based on the corn and soybean meal (SBM), was used as control. Diet 2 used 13% DL-RSM instead of the 11% SBM used in the Diet 1. Diet 3 used 13% extruded double-low rapeseed meal (E-DL-RSM) instead of 11% SBM, and Diet 4 0.03% multienzyme preparation was supplemented in Diet 3. The results showed that replacement of 11% SBM by 13% DL-RSM had no negative effects on performance and nutrient digestibility for finishing pigs. Extrusion and multienzyme preparation also had no beneficial effects on pig performance. However, the concentration of immunoglobulin G (IgG) in serum of DL-RSM treatment was lower (P<0.05) than that of the control, but it increased to the level of control in the treatment of extrusion combined with multienzyme preparation. The diet containing E-DL-RSM combined with multienzyme preparation significantly decreased the malondialdehyde (MDA) content (P<0.05) in serum. It was concluded that DL-RSM was an acceptable alternative to SBM as part of a protein supplement for finishing pig diets. In addition, extrusion and multienzymes preparation were not economically applied in the current study because of their extra cost.

Abstract:Background: The purpose of the research was to investigate the effect of mulberry leaf powder (MP) of varying levels on growth performance, immuno-antioxidant status, meat quality and intestinal health. A total of 120 healthy finishing pigs (Duroc × [Landrace × Yorkshire], 72.2 ± 4.8 kg) were selected for this experiment and divided into four treatments, according to randomized complete block design, with three replicates of 10 pigs each (barrow:gilt = 1:1). The dietary treatments were as follows: (1) Ctrl, corn-soybean meal basal diet; (2) MP_6: basal diet with 6% MP. (3) MP_9: basal diet with 9% MP; (4) MP_12, basal diet with 12% MP. The whole experiment lasted for 33 days. Results: Compared to the Ctrl, dietary supplementation of 9% MP had no negative effects on growth performance, antioxidative capacity, intestinal digestive enzyme activities and inflammatory factors, carcass trait, the lipid profile and amino acid of muscle or related mRNA expression. MP_6 and MP_12 showed detrimental effects on average daily gain (p < 0.05) and digestibility (p < 0.05) of dry matter, crude protein and gross energy. Furthermore, MP_9 could improve (p < 0.05) the level of serum immunoglobulin M, enhance (p < 0.05) the a*24h of meat, up-regulate (p < 0.05) the mRNA expression of occludin and Mucin-2, increase (p < 0.05) the relative abundance of Bifidobacterium and decrease (p < 0.05) the relative abundance of Campylobacter in the hindgut. Conclusion: Summarizing our study, dietary supplementation of 9% MP had no negative effects on growth performance, antioxidative capacity, intestinal digestive enzyme activities and inflammatory factors, carcass trait, the lipid profile and amino acid of muscle, or related mRNA expression. Furthermore, MP_9 could improve serum immunity, enhance meat quality, up-regulate the mRNA expression related to the mechanical and chemical barriers and enrich the beneficial microbiota of the hindgut. Hence, dietary supplementation of 9% MP in finishing pigs may be advisable.

Abstract:The primary aim of this article is to report on one aspect of a quadrennial study designed to explore the appropriateness and impact of the development of a paediatric emergency assessment unit (PEAU) as a response to increases in paediatric emergencies presenting to a south-western regional child health unit. In particular, this article will present the findings of a prospective audit of admissions to the PEAU over a 1-month period during the latter part of 2002. The primary method of data collection utilized a structured survey instrument developed using a design and automatic data computer software package, completed by the nursing staff. Anonymized descriptive data were obtained from 223 children admitted to the PEAU during one calendar moth and authorized by the appropriate clinical directorate audit committee as part of its ongoing commitment to the full implementation of clinical governance. The data presented primarily relate to children admitted during the official opening times of the PEAU, and those presenting out of hours. The data analysis demonstrates a reduction in the number of children staying overnight in hospital since the opening of the PEAU, with the majority of children being referred by their own family doctor. Only one child in the sample was readmitted to the PEAU within 24 hours, and two within 24 hours of discharge as inpatients. Although thought to be pertinent, only one child admitted after official closing of the PEAU and out of hours was described as being admitted for social reasons. The International Classification of Diagnosis (ICD) 10 (World Health Organization (WHO), 1994) classifications of the children admitted to the PEAU reflect those found in other similar studies. Overall, the results of this investigation demonstrate that a PEAU can offer an efficient service to GPs, families and others as a route of referral, thus mitigating unnecessary overnight stays for individual children.

Abstract:pigs (Duroc×Landrace×Jia) were used to study on the effects of three levels of crude fiber:3%, 6% and 8% on performance and serum parameters in finishing pigs. Dividing into control group, treatment 1,treatment 2 by weight and sex. Sugar beet pulp and alfalfa hay meal were selected as the main fiber sources in the tested diet. The results showed: (1)When the level of crude fiber was 6%, the performance was the greatest; (2)When level of crude fiber was 8%, the daily feed intake was decreased, the daily gain and feed conversion were significantly decreased (P0.05); (3)Dietary fiber had significance effect on serum activity of glutamate-oxalacetate transaminase (P0.05), but there were no significance differences in other biochemical parameters in serum; (4)Levels of growth hormone and triiodothyronine were significantly increased in serum with the increase of dietary fiber.

Abstract:Abstract A total of 72 crossbred pigs [(Landrace × Yorkshire) × Duroc] with an average initial BW of 51.59±1.59 kg were used in this 10-wk feeding trial to investigate the effects of different dietary n-6:n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) ratios in finishing pigs. Pigs were randomly allotted to 3 dietary treatments (each n=24) with 6 replications and 4 pigs per pen (2 barrows and 2 gilts). Pigs were fed a corn-soybean meal-based diets formulated by replacing soybean oil with linseed oil to achieve n-6:n-3 close to 5:1, 10:1 and 15:1, respectively. The growth performance, carcass traits and meat quality parameters (meat color, sensory evaluation, cooking loss, drip loss, pH, longissimus muscle area and water holding capacity) were not influenced (P>0.10) by various dietary n-6:n-3 ratios. Pigs fed dietary n-6:n-3 PUFA ratios of 5:1 had a lower (P<0.05) serum total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol and triglyceride levels. The concentrations of n-3 PUFA , including C18:3n-3, C22:5n-3 and C22:6n-3 were improved (P<0.05) in the longissimus dorsi muscles of pigs fed dietary n-6:n-3 PUFA ratios of 5:1. Furthermore, pigs fed dietary n-6:n-3 PUFA ratio of 5:1 decreased (P<0.05) the n-6 concentrations (C18:2n-6 and C20:4n-6) of longissimus dorsi muscles. In conclusion, lowering the dietary n-6:n-3 ratios to 5:1 could be beneficial for the blood lipid profiles, and improve the nutritional value of pork, without adverse effect on growth performance and meat quality parameters that are related to the consumer acceptance.

Abstract:Recent years have witnessed a dramatic increase in the demand for healthy and high-quality pork. Alfalfa, one of the most popular perennial forages, is considered a rich source of highly nutritional forage for livestock feed, as it contains over 90% insoluble dietary fiber. Nevertheless, there is a paucity of data confirming the effects of adding alfalfa on pork quality, amino acid composition, and intestinal microbiota composition. Therefore, the objective of this study was to investigate the effects of different dietary levels of alfalfa on carcass traits, meat quality, amino acid and fatty acid composition, and the intestinal microbiota of Heigai pigs. A total of 72 finishing Heigai pigs were randomly assigned to two groups (n = 36), with six replicate groups and six pigs per replication. The two experimental diets were formulated to include graded levels of alfalfa, 20% (AM20) and 30% (AM30). The results showed that adding 30% alfalfa meal did not affect the growth performance of Heigai pigs but significantly reduced backfat thickness (P < 0.05), pH (P < 0.05), increased the a* value, b* value, and flavor amino acid and essential amino acid contents in longissimus dorsi muscle (LDM). In addition, AM30 didn't affect colonic microbiota abundance but significantly reduced the relative abundances of three phyla, such as Verrucomicrobia, and 43 genera, such as Akkermansia, and significantly increased the relative abundances of 47 genera, such as Prevotella-2. Overall, these results advocate for a diet containing 30% alfalfa to improve meat quality by changing the intestinal microflora composition without affecting the growth performance of Heigai pigs, which provides compelling evidence for the use of alfalfa to relieve the pressure on corn and soybean meal demand and produce high-quality pork.
