Abstract:The formation of solid-electrolyte interphase (SEI) in "water-in-salt" electrolyte (WiSE) expands the electrochemical stability window of aqueous electrolytes beyond 3.0 V. However, the parasitic hydrogen evolution reaction that drives anode corrosion, cracking, and the subsequent reformation of SEI still occurs, compromising long-term cycling performance of the batteries. To improve cycling stability, an unsaturated monomer acrylamide (AM) is introduced as an electrolyte additive, whose presence in WiSE reduces its viscosity and improves ionic conductivity. Upon charging, AM electropolymerizes into polyacrylamide, as confirmed both experimentally and computationally. The in situ polymer constitutes effective protection layers at both anode and cathode surfaces, and enables LiMn2 O4 ||L-TiO2 full cells with high specific capacity (157 mAh g-1 at 1 C), long-term cycling stability (80% capacity retention within 200 cycles at 1 C), and high rate capability (79 mAh g-1 at 30 C). The in situ electropolymerization found in this work provides an alternative and highly effective strategy to design protective interphases at the negative and positive electrodes for high-voltage aqueous batteries of lithium-ion or beyond.

Abstract:The solid–electrolyte interphase (SEI) is pivotal in stabilizing lithium metal anodes for rechargeable batteries. However, the SEI is constantly reforming and consuming electrolyte with cycling. The rational design of a stable SEI is plagued by the failure to control its structure and stability. Here we report a molecular-level SEI design using a reactive polymer composite, which effectively suppresses electrolyte consumption in the formation and maintenance of the SEI. The SEI layer consists of a polymeric lithium salt, lithium fluoride nanoparticles and graphene oxide sheets, as evidenced by cryo-transmission electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy and surface-sensitive spectroscopies. This structure is different from that of a conventional electrolyte-derived SEI and has excellent passivation properties, homogeneity and mechanical strength. The use of the polymer–inorganic SEI enables high-efficiency Li deposition and stable cycling of 4 V Li|LiNi0.5Co0.2Mn0.3O2 cells under lean electrolyte, limited Li excess and high capacity conditions. The same approach was also applied to design stable SEI layers for sodium and zinc anodes.

Abstract:AbstractHigh‐energy‐density lithium (Li) metal batteries are severely hindered by the dendritic Li deposition dictated by non‐uniform solid electrolyte interphase (SEI). Despite its unique advantages in improving the uniformity of Li deposition, the current anion‐derived SEI is unsatisfactory under practical conditions. Herein regulating the electrolyte structure of anions by anion receptors was proposed to construct stable anion‐derived SEI. Tris(pentafluorophenyl)borane (TPFPB) anion acceptors with electron‐deficient boron atoms interact with bis(fluorosulfonyl)imide anions (FSI−) and decrease the reduction stability of FSI−. Furthermore, the type of aggregate cluster of FSI− in electrolyte changes, FSI− interacting with more Li ions in the presence of TPFPB. Therefore, the decomposition of FSI− to form Li2S is promoted, improving the stability of anion‐derived SEI. In working Li | LiNi0.5Co0.2Mn0.3O2 batteries under practical conditions, the anion‐derived SEI with TPFPB undergoes 194 cycles compared with 98 cycles of routine anion‐derived SEI. This work inspires a fresh ground to construct stable anion‐derived SEI by manipulating the electrolyte structure of anions.
Ultra‐tough Dynamic Supramolecular Ion‐conducting Elastomer Induced Uniform Li+ Transport and Stabilizes Interphase Ensures Dendrite‐free Lithium Metal Anodes

Abstract:Artificial polymer solid electrolyte interphases (SEIs) with microphase-separated structures provide promising solutions to the inhomogeneity and cracking issues of natural SEIs in lithium metal batteries (LMBs). However, achieving homogeneous ionic conductivity, excellent mechanical properties, and superior interfacial stability remains challenging due to interference from hard-phase domains in ion transport and solid-solid interface issues with lithium metal. Herein, we present a dynamic supramolecular ion-conducting poly(urethane-urea) interphase (DSIPI) that achieves these three properties through modulating the hard-phase domains and constructing a composite SEI in situ. The soft-phase polytetrahydrofuran backbone, featuring loose Li+-O coordinating interactions, ensures uniform Li+ transport. Concurrently, sextuple hydrogen bonds in the hard phase dissipate strain energy through sequential bond cleavage, thereby imparting exceptional mechanical properties. Moreover, enriched bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide anion (TFSI-) in DSIPI promotes the in-situ formation of a stable polymer-inorganic composite SEI during cycling. Consequently, the DSIPI-protected lithium anode (DSIPI@Li) enables symmetric cells with exceptional cyclability exceeding 4,000 hours at an ultra-high current density of 20 mA cm-2, thereby demonstrating excellent cycling stability. Furthermore, DSIPI@Li facilitates stable operation of the pouch cells under the constraints of a high-loading LiNi0.8Co0.1Mn0.1O2 cathode and low negative/positive capacity (N/P) ratio. This work presents a powerful strategy for designing artificial SEIs and high-performance LMBs.

Abstract:The solid–electrolyte interphase (SEI) in lithium (Li) metal batteries is often heterogeneous, containing a diverse range of species and has poor mechanical stability. The SEI undergoes constant cracking and reconstruction during electrochemical cycling, which is accompanied by the exhaustion of active Li and electrolytes, hindering practical applications of the batteries. Here we propose an in situ structural design of SEI to promote its homogeneity and improve its mechanical stability. A bilayer structure of SEI is tailored through trioxane-modulated electrolytes: the inner layer is dominated by LiF to improve homogeneity while the outer layer contains Li polyoxymethylene to improve mechanical stability, synergistically leading to mitigated reconstruction of SEI and reversible Li plating/stripping. The coin cell consisting of an ultrathin Li metal anode (50 μm) and a high-loading cathode (3.0 mAh cm −2 )—with the tailored bilayer SEI—achieves 430 cycles tested at 1.2 mA cm −2 , while the cell with an anion-derived SEI undergoes only 200 cycles under same conditions. A prototype 440 Wh kg −1 pouch cell (5.3 Ah), with a low negative/positive capacity ratio of 1.8 and lean electrolytes of 2.1 g Ah −1 , achieves 130 cycles.

Abstract:Solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) formation and H2 O activity reduction in Water-in-Salt electrolytes (WiSE) with an enlarged stability window of 3.0 V have provided the feasibility of the high-energy-density aqueous Li-ion batteries. Here, we extend the cathodic potential of WiSE by rationally controlling intermolecular interaction and interphase chemistry with the introduction of trimethyl phosphate (TMP) into WiSE. The TMP not merely limits the H2 O activity via the strong interaction between TMP and H2 O but also contributes to the formation of reinforced SEI involving phosphate and LiF by manipulating the Li+ solvation structure. Thus, water-tolerance LiMn2 O4 (LMO)||Li4 Ti5 O12 (LTO) full cell with a P/N ratio of 1.14 can be assembled and achieve a long cycling life of 1000 times with high coulombic efficiency of >99.9 %. This work provides a promising insight into the cost-effective practical manufacture of LMO||LTO cells without rigorous moisture-free requirements.

Abstract:Practical lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries are severely plagued by the instability of solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) formed in routine ether electrolytes. Herein, an electrolyte with 1,3,5-trioxane (TO) and 1,2-dimethoxyethane (DME) as co-solvents is proposed to construct a high-mechanical-stability SEI by enriching organic components in Li-S batteries. The high-mechanical-stability SEI works compatibly in Li-S batteries. TO with high polymerization capability can preferentially decompose and form organic-rich SEI, strengthening mechanical stability of SEI, which mitigates crack and regeneration of SEI and reduces the consumption rate of active Li, Li polysulfides, and electrolytes. Meanwhile, DME ensures high specific capacity of S cathodes. Accordingly, the lifespan of Li-S batteries increases from 75 cycles in routine ether electrolyte to 216 cycles in TO-based electrolyte. Furthermore, a 417 Wh kg-1 Li-S pouch cell undergoes 20 cycles. This work provides an emerging electrolyte design for practical Li-S batteries.

Stable Solvent-Derived Inorganic-Rich Solid Electrolyte Interphase (SEI) for High-Voltage Lithium-Metal Batteries.

Abstract:The inorganic-rich solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) has attracted wide attention due to its good compatibility with the lithium (Li) metal anode. Herein, a stable solvent-derived inorganic-rich SEI is constructed from a hydrofluoroether-diluted low-concentration electrolyte, which simultaneously possesses the merits of nonflammability and low cost (0.5 M LiPF6). The addition of hydrofluoroether enhances the coordination strength between Li+ and solvents, altering the decomposition path of solvents to yield more Li2O. The abundant Li2O crystals endow the SEI with improved passivating ability and ion conductivity. The 30 μm Li|NCM523 (3.8 mAh cm-2) batteries with solvent-derived Li2O-rich SEI deliver 96.1% capacity retention after 200 cycles. Notably, a 1.1 Ah Li|NCA pouch cell delivers an energy density of 374 Wh kg-1 and achieves 45 stable cycles. This study points out that tuning the decomposition of solvents provides a new approach to construct stable inorganic-rich SEI for practical Li-metal batteries.

An “Ether‐In‐Water” Electrolyte Boosts Stable Interfacial Chemistry for Aqueous Lithium‐Ion Batteries

Abstract:Aqueous batteries are promising devices for electrochemical energy storage because of their high ionic conductivity, safety, low cost, and environmental friendliness. However, their voltage output and energy density are limited by the failure to form a solid‐electrolyte interphase (SEI) that can expand the inherently narrow electrochemical window of water (1.23 V) imposed by hydrogen and oxygen evolution. Here, a novel (Li4(TEGDME)(H2O)7) is proposed as a solvation electrolyte with stable interfacial chemistry. By introducing tetraethylene glycol dimethyl ether (TEGDME) into a concentrated aqueous electrolyte, a new carbonaceous component for both cathode−electrolyte interface and SEI formation is generated. In situ characterizations and ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) calculations reveal a bilayer hybrid interface composed of inorganic LiF and organic carbonaceous species reduced from Li+2(TFSI−) and Li+4(TEGDME). Consequently, the interfacial films kinetically broaden the electrochemical stability window to 4.2 V, thus realizing a 2.5 V LiMn2O4−Li4Ti5O12 full battery with an excellent energy density of 120 W h kg−1 for 500 cycles. The results provide an in‐depth, mechanistic understanding of a potential design of more effective interphases for next‐generation aqueous lithium‐ion batteries.

Abstract:With an eye toward grid‐energy storage based on aqueous lithium‐ion batteries, a robust bilayer aqueous solid‐electrolyte interphase (SEI) is constructed on a ladderized heterocyclic poly(2,3‐dithiino‐1,4‐benzoquinone) electrode, realizing a long−term calendar life over 80 days. The proton co‐intercalation leads to the water elimination path that triggers/accelerates the precipitation and decomposition of bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide anions, and subsequently, forms the SEI. The solid‐electrolyte interphase (SEI) is the key component of the electrochemical electrode as a passivation layer, which enables a long calendar life for commercial applications. However, owing to the poor understanding of aqueous SEI in conventional aqueous electrolytes, the adoption of aqueous Li‐ion batteries (ALIBs) has been drastically limited. Herein, the construction of a robust aqueous SEI is successfully demonstrated by introducing a ladderized heterocyclic polymer electrode into a water‐in‐salt electrolyte, leading to ultra‐stable dual‐ion storage with long‐term calendar life. The sophisticated SEI composed of fluorinated/oxygenated species is revealed. Electrochemical and structural analysis confirm that such SEI formation is characterized by a proton co‐intercalation, which consumes the water in the Li+'s solvation shell to trigger the subsequent decomposition of organic anions. This new SEI formation path is expected to broaden the horizons of aqueous SEI and open new avenues for the design of versatile electrode materials for further advances in ALIBs.

Abstract:Li-S batteries have been considered promising candidates for the next-generation energy storage devices because of their extremely high energy densities and low cost. However, Li dendrite formation/dissolution and shuttle of high-order polysulfides prevent their practical applications. Herein, we demonstrate a highly concentrated electrolyte, 12M lithium bis(fluorosulfonyl) imide (LiFSI) salt in DME solvent (12M LiFSI/DME), that can effectively suppress both the Li dendritic growth on the anode and the polysulfide shuttle reactions on the cathode side. The highly concentrated electrolyte along with the robust solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) formed therein play the key role in achieving high coulombic efficiencies for both Li stripping/plating (> 99.2%) and S cathode (> 99.7%). Based on the in-depth understanding of the interactions between electrodes and highly concentrated electrolyte, we designed a novel dilute electrolyte (1M LiFSI/HFE+DME), which achieves similar electro-chemical performances in Li-S batteries as the concentrated electrolytes. These Li-S batteries with the highest CE for Li anode and sulfur cathode maintains a high reversible capacity of 786 mA h/g at 0.1 A/g after 300 cycles, or 644 mA h/g at 300th cycle even at 1 A/g without any detectable shuttle reactions.
Interphase Optimum via Synergistic Effect of Poly(1,3‐dioxolane) Electrolytes and Lithium Difluorophosphate for Stable Lithium Metal Batteries

Abstract:A lithium difluorophosphate (LiDFP)‐driven approach to trigger a ring‐opening polymerization of DOL, which not only achieves excellent ionic conductivity but also facilitates interfacial charge transport. Meanwhile, a high‐mechanical‐stability organic–inorganic hybrid solid electrolyte interphase is formed by the synergistic effect of Poly‐DOL electrolytes and LiDFP. Multiple advantages improved the cycling performance of the battery. Solid polymer electrolytes (SPEs) hold great promise for future applications of high‐energy lithium metal batteries (LMBs). Unfortunately, inadequate room‐temperature ionic conductivity, sluggish interfacial charge transport, and uncontrolled electrode/electrolyte interface reactions severely limit their widespread applications. Herein, poly(1,3‐dioxolane) electrolytes (PDEs) are prepared in situ by introducing lithium difluorophosphate (LiDFP, LiPO2F2) as a multifunctional additive, which not only achieves excellent ionic conductivity but facilitates interfacial charge transport. Meanwhile, a high‐mechanical‐stability organic–inorganic hybrid solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) is formed by the synergistic effect of PDEs and LiDFP. The enrichment of LiF and LixPOyFz species in SEI formed by the preferential reduction of LiDFP ensures outstanding mechanical stability, and the ring‐opening polymerization of 1,3‐dioxolane provides the SEI excellent adaptability to the repetitive volume changes of lithium metal anode, which mitigates crack and regeneration of SEI and reduces side reactions between active Li and electrolytes. Therefore, based on PDEs, the symmetric Li cell enables steady cycling for 2000 h. The Li‐LiFePO4 cell achieves superior long‐term cycling stability (over 1200 cycles) and wide operating temperature (−20 ∼ 60 °C). Also, the Li‐LiNi0.6Mn0.2Co0.2O2 exhibits favorable cycling stability. This study provides solutions to ongoing pain point issues of SPEs and facilitates practical applications of SPEs in high‐energy LMBs.

Abstract:The cycling stability of high-energy-density lithium (Li) metal batteries is severely hindered by uneven deposition of Li, which is caused by the heterogeneity transport of Li ions in solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) on the surface of Li metal anodes. LiF-rich SEI emerges as a promising solution to improve homogeneous transport of Li ions. Herein, constructing LiF-rich SEI by regulating the interaction between the polymer coating on Li metal anode and fluoroethylene carbonate (FEC) in electrolytes was demonstrated. The polymer coating with uniformly distributed polar functional groups can interact with intermediate decomposition products of FEC, promoting the formation of LiF. LiF-rich SEI ensures improved uniformity of Li deposition, which promises stable operation of Li metal batteries under practical conditions for 143 cycles in comparison with 89 cycles of control group. Moreover, a prototype pouch cell of 1.0 Ah maintains a capacity retention of 90% after 180 cycles. This work provides a fresh attempt to construct LiF-rich SEI by regulating the interaction between solvent and polymer for long-cycling Li metal batteries.

Engineering a Dynamic Solvent-Phobic Liquid Electrolyte Interphase for Long-Life Lithium Metal Batteries

Abstract:The heterogeneity, species diversity, and poor mechanical stability of solid electrolyte interphases (SEIs) in conventional carbonate electrolytes result in the irreversible exhaustion of lithium (Li) and electrolytes during cycling, hindering the practical applications of Li metal batteries (LMBs). Herein, this work proposes a solvent-phobic dynamic liquid electrolyte interphase (DLEI) on a Li metal (Li-PFbTHF (perfluoro-butyltetrahydrofuran)) surface that selectively transports salt and induces salt-derived SEI formation. The solvent-phobic DLEI with C-F-rich groups dramatically reduces the side reactions between Li, carbonate solvents, and humid air, forming a LiF/Li3PO4-rich SEI. In situ electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and Ab-initio molecular dynamics demonstrate that DLEI effectively stabilizes the interface between Li metal and the carbonate electrolyte. Specifically, the LiFePO4||Li-PFbTHF cells deliver 80.4% capacity retention after 1000 cycles at 1.0 C, excellent rate capacity (108.2 mAh g-1 at 5.0 C), and 90.2% capacity retention after 550 cycles at 1.0 C in full-cells (negative/positive (N/P) ratio of 8) with high LiFePO4 loadings (15.6 mg cm-2) in carbonate electrolyte. In addition, the 0.55 Ah pouch cell of 252.0 Wh kg-1 delivers stable cycling. Hence, this study provides an effective strategy for controlling salt-derived SEI to improve the cycling performances of carbonate-based LMBs.

Abstract:As the most promising high energy density technology, lithium metal batteries are associated with serious interfacial challenges because the electrolytes employed are unable to meet the requirements of both electrodes simultaneously, namely, the systems that work for Li metal are highly likely to be unsuitable for the cathode, and vice versa. In this study, we investigate the synergistic effects of lithium bis (oxalate) borate (LiBOB), fluoroethylene carbonate (FEC) and adiponitrile (ADN) to develop a formula that is compatible with both elements in the battery. The solid–electrolyte interphase (SEI) multi-layer generated from LiBOB and FEC successfully protects the electrolyte from the lithium and suppresses the decomposition of ADN on lithium, identified by the tiny amounts of isonitriles on the surface of the anode. Simultaneously, most of the ADN molecules remain and protect the cathode particles via the absorption layer of the nitrile groups, in the same way that this process works in commercial lithium-ion batteries. Benefiting from the stable interfacial films formed synchronously on the anode and cathode, the Li/LiNi0.8Co0.1Mn0.1O2 cells with an area capacity of ~3 mAh cm−2 operate stably beyond 250 cycles and target the accumulated capacity to levels as high as ~653.4 mAh cm−2. Our approach demonstrates that electrolyte engineering with known additives is a practical strategy for addressing the challenges of lithium batteries.

Abstract:A simple drop‐casting method is used to achieve an artificial solid electrolyte interface (SEI) for the anode of lithium metal batteries (LMB). Through simulations and experiments, the composite double‐layer (CDL) SEI composed of mesoporous TiO2 and F‐rich organic compound provides mechanical pressure and high ionic conductivity to achieve a high stability over an 800 h cycle of symmetric cells. The next generation of high‐energy‐density storage devices is expected to be rechargeable lithium metal batteries. However, unstable metal‐electrolyte interfaces, dendrite growth, and volume expansion will compromise lithium metal batteries (LMB) safety and life. A simple drop‐casting method is used to create a double‐layer functional interface composed of inorganic mesoporous TiO2 and F‐rich organics PFDMA. For high‐quality lithium deposition, TiO2 can provide uniform mechanical pressure, abundant mesoporous channels, and increased ionic conductivity, while PFDMA provides enough F to form LiF in the first cycle and improves Li‐electrolyte compatibility. Experiments and simulations are combined to investigate the optimized mechanism of the LiF‐rich solid electrolyte interface (SEI). The high binding energy of organic matter and Li demonstrates that Li+ preferentially binds with the F atom in organic matter. As a result, the tightly bound double‐layer structure can inhibit lithium dendrite growth and slow electrolyte decomposition. Consequently, the symmetric Li||Li cell has a high stability performance of over 800 h. The assembled LiFePO4||Li cell can sustain 300 cycles at a 1 C rate and has a reversible capacity of 136.7 mAh g−1.

Abstract:Employing three variants of lithium salts as catalysts, poly(ester‐alt‐acetal) electrolytes are synthesized via in situ copolymerization of glutaric anhydride and 1,3‐dioxane, leading to alternating arrangements of ester and acetal groups. These lithium salts additionally serve as promoters for solid‐electrolyte interphase formation. Remarkably, the SEI formed by LiPF6 displays the densest structure and demonstrates superior performance. The in situ‐formed polymer electrolytes provide a vital solution for improving both safety and performance in the high‐voltage lithium metal batteries. This study reports new poly(ester‐alt‐acetal) (PEA) electrolytes, synthesized through in situ alternating copolymerization of glutaric anhydride and 1,3‐dioxane. In the presence of 25 wt.% lithium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide (LiTFSI), three lithium salts, lithium difluoro(oxalate)borate (LiDFOB), lithium hexafluorophosphate (LiPF6), and lithium tetrafluoroborate (LiBF4) are employed as the catalysts for the copolymerization. These lithium salts can modulate the compositions of the solid‐electrolyte interphase (SEI) layer. PEA‐LiPF6 exhibits outstanding SEI chemistry, with observing the highest LiF content, thereby achieving a remarkable critical current density of up to 2.5 mA cm−2, a Li+ transference number of 0.81, and an expansive electrochemical stability window of 6.0 V. Furthermore, PEA‐LiPF6 demonstrates noteworthy capacity retention rates of 96.6% (0.5 C, 200th/first cycle in LiFePO4||Li), 95.6% (0.5 C, 100th/first cycle in LiMn0.6Fe0.4PO4||Li), 95.1% (1 C, 100th/first cycle in LiCoO2||Li), and 87.0% (1 C, 100th/first cycle in LiNi0.6Co0.2Mn0.2O2||Li full‐cells). This work demonstrates a facile in situ route to fabricate polymer electrolytes for high‐voltage lithium‐metal batteries with balanced and comprehensive performance.

Abstract:Enhancing the interphase stability of polymer electrolytes with high-voltage cathodes is crucial for the development of high-energy-density lithium metal batteries (LMBs), especially in wearable devices area. Herein, lithium difluorophosphate (LiDFP) is incorporated into the solid polymer electrolyte of poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) to enhance the formation of a robust cathode-electrolyte interphase (CEI) in high-voltage LiCoO2 LMBs. Through combining electrochemical measurements, spectroscopic techniques and theoretical calculations, the underlying modification mechanism is revealed. Due to its stronger anionic coordination with both polymer electrolyte chain and proton, and more oxidation-active resultant anion-coordinated polymer compared with lithium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide (LiTFSI), LiDFP suppresses the formation of the strong acid HTFSI deriving from the deprotonated process of the terminal O-H group thus avoiding the further oxidative attack to the polymeric framework. Furthermore, under the synergetic decomposition of HDFP intermediate, the polymer-derived radical helps to reconstruct a chemo-mechanically stable and Li-conductive CEI layer, which consists of abundant LiF/Li3PO4/LixPOyFz inorganic species distributed in lithiated organic macromolecules. The in-situ constructed CEI effectively passivates catalytic sites on LiCoO2 directly against PEO, resulting in well-maintained layered structure during high-voltage cycling. The proposed interphasial chemistry that regulates CEI formation provides directive knowledge of electrolyte optimization for high-voltage solid-state batteries.

Abstract:The water-in-salt electrolyte (WISE) features intimate interactions between a cation and anion, which induces the formation of an anion-derived solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) and expands the aqueous electrolyte voltage window to >3.0 V. Although further increasing the salt concentration (even to >60 molality (m)) can gradually improve water stability, issues about cost and practical feasibility are concerned. An alternative approach is to intensify ion-solvent interactions in the inner solvation structure by shielding off outward electrostatic attractions from nearby ions. Here, we design an "overcrowded" electrolyte using the non-polar, hydrogen-bonding 1,4-dioxane (DX) as an overcrowding agent, thereby achieving a robust LiF-enriched SEI and wide electrolyte operation window (3.7 V) with a low salt concentration (<2 m). As a result, the electrochemical performance of aqueous Li4Ti5O12/LiMn2O4 full cells can be substantially improved (88.5% capacity retention after 200 cycles, at 0.57 C). This study points out a promising strategy to develop low-cost and stable high-voltage aqueous batteries.
