Abstract:Balanced fertilizer application is crucial for achieving high-yield, high-quality, and efficient maize cultivation. Sulfur (S), considered a secondary nutrient, ranks as the fourth most essential plant nutrient after nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), and potassium (K). S deficiency could significantly influence maize growth and development. Field experiments were conducted in Jiangsu, Yangzhou, China, from April 1 to July 20 in 2023. Jingkenuo2000 (JKN2000) and Suyunuo5 (SYN5) were used as experiment materials, and four treatments were set: no fertilizer application (F0), S fertilizer application (F1), conventional fertilization method (F2), and conventional fertilization method with additional S application (F3). The objective was to investigate the impact of S application on grain weight and the quality of fresh waxy maize flour and starch. The results indicated that all fertilization treatments significantly increased grain weight and the starch and protein contents in grains compared to no fertilization. Among these, F3 exhibited the most significant increases. Specifically, in JKN2000, the grain weight, starch content (SC), and protein content (PC) increased by 27.7%, 4.8%, and 14.8%, respectively, while in SYN5, these parameters increased by 26.3%, 6.2%, and 7.4%, respectively, followed by F2 and F1. Compared to F0, F3 increased starch and protein contents by 4.8% and 14.8% in JKN2000, and by 6.2% and 7.4% in SYN5. Compared to F0, F2 and F3 significantly increased the iodine binding capacity (IBC) of SYN5, with F3 being more effective than F2, while they had no significant effect on the IBC of JKN2000. The peak viscosity (PV) and breakdown viscosity (BD) of waxy maize flour and starch for both varieties showed a consistent response (increasing trend) to S application, and F3 had the largest increase. Regarding the thermal properties of waxy maize flour, F3 significantly enhanced the retrogradation enthalpy (ΔHgel) of both varieties compared to F0, while achieving the lowest retrogradation percentage (%R). In starch, the highest ΔHgel and the lowest %R were observed under the F2 treatment. In summary, under the conditions of this experiment, adding S fertilizer to conventional fertilization not only increased the grain weight of waxy maize but also effectively optimized the pasting and thermal properties of waxy maize flour and starch.

Abstract:The effects of nitrogen (N) fertilization at the rates of 0 and 230 kg hm(-2) combined with selected sulfur (S) fertilization rates of 0, 46, 56, 77, and 115 kg hm(-2) on A- and B-wheat starch granule accumulation, composition, and thermal and pasting properties were investigated. Scanning electron micrographs revealed that A- and B-starch granules accumulation during grain filling can be influenced significantly by N and S fertilization, and B-granules tend to be more sensitive to S fertilization than A-starch granules. The doses of nitrogen and sulfur fertilization on starch properties were not positively correlated; higher concentration of fertilizers failed to cause a higher effects. N230S46 and N230S56 treatment resulted in the higher peak viscosity, trough viscosity, breakdown viscosity, final and setback viscosity, and gelatinization temperature (To, Tp, Tc) according to differential scanning calorimeter (DSC) and rapid visco analyzer (RVA), respectively.
Effects of nitrogen fertilizer application on the physicochemical properties of foxtail millet (Setaria italica L.) starch

Abstract:The use of nitrogen fertilizer is a crucial agronomic practice to increase crop output and quality. This study investigated the impact of five nitrogen application levels (0, 60, 135, 210, and 285 kg N/hm2) on the physicochemical properties of foxtail millet (FM) starch. Optimal nitrogen application (210 kg N/hm2) significantly increased L*, a*, and b* values, water and oil absorption capacity, water solubility, and swelling power of starch. The number of small starch granules increased as the nitrogen application rate increased, but the granule morphology and typical A-type pattern did not change among the treatments. Nitrogen application increased the relative crystallinity and ordered structure, resulting in a higher gelatinization enthalpy. Compared to the control group (7.02 J/g), the enthalpy increased by 21.94 %, 66.38 %, 73.50 %, and 103.28 % under the nitrogen application rates, respectively. Moreover, nitrogen application greatly increased the percentage of A and B3 chains while it lowered the apparent amylose content, peak viscosity, and final viscosity. The effects of 210 and 285 kg N/hm2 treatments on the water solubility and swelling power, water and oil absorption, and light transmission of starch were greater compared to the 60 and 135 kg N/hm2 treatments. These results indicate that nitrogen fertilization significantly affects the physicochemical properties of FM starch.
Nitrogen Supply Affects Yield and Grain Filling of Maize by Regulating Starch Metabolizing Enzyme Activities and Endogenous Hormone Contents

Abstract:This study aimed to examine the effect of nitrogen (N) application rate and time on yield, grain filling, starch metabolizing enzymes, and hormones of maize based on a long-term field experiment initiated in 2012. The total N fertilizer dose [(0 (N0), 100 (N1), 200 (N2), and 300 (N3) kg N ha –1 ] was split into two (T1, one-third at sowing and two-thirds at the six-leaf stage) or three (T2, one-third each at sowing, six-leaf, and eleven-leaf stage) times application. The results showed that the highest yield was obtained under N3T2, N2T1, and N3T2 in 2018, 2019, and 2020, which was 222.49, 185.31, and 194.00% than that of N0 in each year, respectively. N2 and N3 significantly increased the yield through enhancing ears ha –1 , grains per plant, and 100-grain weight; however, N2 and N3 did not show a significant difference in yield and above-yield components. In addition, N application time did not significantly change yield under the same N rate. N0 limited the activities of starch metabolizing enzymes, resulting in insufficient accumulation of sucrose and starch. The contents of indole-3-acetic acid, cytokinin, abscisic acid, and gibberellin were decreased under N0 during grain filling. The average grain-filling rate and maximum grain-filling rate ( G max ) and grain weight increment achieving G max increased under N2 and N3, and the grain-filling parameters were positively correlated with 100-grain weight. In conclusion, 200 kg N ha –1 with one-third application at sowing and two-thirds application at the six-leaf stage is a suitable N supply way to improve starch metabolizing enzymes, regulate hormone content, and enhance grain-filling rates, and thus increasing the maize yield in the semiarid Loess Plateau of China.

Effects of mid-stage nitrogen application timing on the morphological structure and physicochemical properties of japonica rice starch

Abstract:Background: Nitrogen management of crops, especially when mid-stage nitrogen is applied, is a key factor affecting the yield and grain quality of rice (Oryza sativa). Here, the timing of mid-stage nitrogen application was evaluated for its effect on rice grain quality by assessing the morphological structure and physicochemical properties of starch from two japonica rice cultivars growing in fields (Nangeng 9108 and Nangeng 5055). Results: The experiment was arranged in a split-plot design, with the two rice cultivars as the main plot factor and three timings of mid-stage nitrogen application as the within-plot factor. Briefly, three applications were made: at the emergence of the top-sixth-leaf (ahead), the top-fourth-leaf (normal), and the top-second-leaf (delayed) of the main stem. Delaying mid-stage nitrogen application caused the starch granule surface to become uneven and significantly reduced its particle size, whereas it increased the polished rice rate, chalkiness degree, and protein content. Furthermore, the apparent amylose content decreased with a delay in mid-stage nitrogen application, thereby resulting in higher relative crystallinity, swelling power, water solubility, gelatinization enthalpy, and low retrogradation. Finally, we also found that delaying this nitrogen application lowered the characteristic values of rice flour viscosities, leading to cooking quality deterioration. Conclusion: These results therefore suggest that delaying mid-stage nitrogen application enhances the processing and nutritional qualities of japonica rice but evidently has an adverse effect upon its appearance and cooking qualities. © 2020 Society of Chemical Industry.
Application of moderate nitrogen levels alleviates yield loss and grain quality deterioration caused by post-silking heat stress in fresh waxy maize

Abstract:High temperature (HT) during grain filling is one of the most important environmental factors limiting maize yield and grain quality. Nitrogen (N) fertilizer is essential for maintaining normal plant growth and defense against environmental stresses. The effects of three N rates and two temperature regimes on the grain yield and quality of fresh waxy maize were studied using the hybrids Suyunuo 5 (SYN5) and Yunuo 7 (YN7) as materials. N application rates were 1.5, 4.5, and 7.5 g plant<sup>−1</sup>, representing low, moderate, and high N levels (LN, MN, and HN, respectively). Mean day/night temperatures during the grain filling of spring- and summer-sown plants were 27.6/21.0 °C and 28.6/20.0 °C for ambient temperature (AT) and 35/21.0 °C and 35/20.0 °C for HT, respectively. On average, HT reduced kernel number, weight, yield, and moisture content by 29.8%, 17.9%, 38.7%, and 3.3%, respectively. Kernel number, weight, yield, moisture, and starch contents were highest under MN among the three N rates under both temperature regimes. HT reduced grain starch content at all N levels. HT increased grain protein content, which gradually increased with N rate. Mean starch granule size under MN was larger (10.9 μm) than that under LN and HN (both 10.4 μm) at AT. However, the mean size of starch granules was higher under LN (11.7 μm) and lower under MN (11.2 μm) at HT. Iodine binding capacity (IBC) was lowest under MN and highest under HN among the three N levels under both temperature regimes. In general, IBC at all N rates was increased by HT. Peak viscosity (PV) was gradually reduced with increasing N rate at AT. In comparison with LN, PV was increased by MN and decreased by HN at HT. Retrogradation percentage gradually increased with N rate at AT, but was lowest under MN among the three N rates at HT. LN + AT and MN + HT produced grain with high pasting viscosity and low retrogradation tendency. MN application could alleviate the negative effects of HT on the grain yield and quality of fresh waxy maize.
Nitrogen fertilizer application rate affects the dynamic metabolism of nitrogen and carbohydrates in kernels of waxy maize

Abstract:Introduction: Nitrogen (N) plays a pivotal role in the growth, development, and yield of maize. An optimal N application rate is crucial for enhancing N and carbohydrate (C) accumulation in waxy maize grains, which in turn synergistically improves grain weight. Methods: A 2-year field experiment was conducted to evaluate the impact of different N application rates on two waxy maize varieties, Jinnuo20 (JN20) and Jindannuo41 (JDN41), during various grain filling stages. The applied N rates were 0 (N0), 120 (N1), 240 (N2), and 360 (N3) kg N ha-1. Results: The study revealed that N application significantly influenced nitrogen accumulation, protein components (gliadin, albumin, globulin, and glutelin), carbohydrate contents (soluble sugars, amylose, and amylopectin), and activities of enzymes related to N and C metabolism in waxy maize grains. Notable varietal differences in these parameters were observed. In both varieties, the N2 treatment consistently resulted in the highest values for almost all measured traits compared to the other N treatments. Specifically, the N2 treatment yielded an average increase in grain dry matter of 21.78% for JN20 and 17.11% for JDN41 compared to N0. The application of N positively influenced the activities of enzymes involved in C and N metabolism, enhancing the biosynthesis of grain protein, amylose, and amylopectin while decreasing the accumulation of soluble sugars. This modulation of the C/N ratio in the grains directly contributed to an increase in grain dry weight. Conclusion: Collectively, our findings underscore the critical role of N in regulating kernel N and C metabolism, thereby influencing dry matter accumulation in waxy maize grains during the grain filling stage.
Effects of Nitrogen and Potassium on Key Regulatory Enzyme Activities for Grain Starch in Winter Wheat

Abstract:【Objective】 The objective is to evaluate the effects of nitrogen and potassium fertilization on wheat key regulatory enzymes for grain starch.【Method】 Under the condition treated with two fertilization levels of nitrogen (0 and 225 kg N·ha-1) and potassium (0 and 150 kg K2O ha-1) in the field, two winter wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) cultivars differing in gluten content, ‘Ningmai 9’ (low) and ‘Yangmai 10’ (medium), were planted in the field to investigate the activities of enzymes for starch formation and starch content of grain and the relationship with fertilization levels. 【Result】The results showed that the changing patterns in the sucrose content, the activities of enzymes for starch formation and starch content of grain were similar in two cultivars, but the enzyme activities and the contents of sucrose and starch were higher in ‘Ningmai 9’ than in ‘Yangmai 10’. Compared with non-nitrogen and non-potassium fertilization (N0K0) treatment, N and K fertilization increased sucrose content, the activities of SS, SSS and GBSS and starch yield in grains, but decreased the content of total starch and amylopectin in grain. Grain amylose contents were decreased by nitrogen fertilization, while increased by potassium in two wheat cultivars. Compared with potassium fertilization, the role of nitrogen on sucrose content and relative enzyme activities was greater. 【Conclusion】 Correlated analysis indicates that the activity of SSS and GBSS in grain, which was increased by appropriate flag leaf N/K ratio at anthesis with N and K supply, is the key physiological basis for starch formation. Grain GBSS activity, which increased by potassium fertilization, is the enzymology basis for K enhancing grain amylose contents. Higher enzyme activity of SS, SSS and GBSS is the enzymology base of higher starch contents for weak gluten cultivar ‘Ningmai 9’ than for medium gluten cultivar ‘Yangmai 10’.

Abstract:Nitrogen fertilizer is an essential nutrient for rice (Oryza sativa L.), especially, for newly bred 'super' rice cultivars with great yield potential. The effects of nitrogen fertilizer (0, 100, 200, 300, 400 kg N ha-1) on the physicochemical properties of two high yielding 'super' rice Yongyou 2640 and Lianjing 7 were investigated in this study. The application of nitrogen fertilizer affects the structure of rice starch, thus changing its functional properties, which ultimately leads to a change in the quality of both rice cultivars. There were dose effects of nitrogen fertilizer on grain quality. Grain quality was improved under moderate nitrogen inputs (100 & 200 kg N ha-1), but deteriorated at excessive nitrogen levels (300 & 400 kg N ha-1). With moderate N application, starch granule size increased and the surface of starch granule became smoother; there were higher proportion of short branch-chain of amylopectin and lower proportion of long branch-chain of amylopectin with low relative crystallinity, lower degree of order of structure and higher content of amorphous structure at the outer region of the starch granules; peak viscosity, hot viscosity, breakdown value were increased while setback and pasting temperature were decreased; gelatinization temperature, gelatinization enthalpy, retrogradation enthalpy, retrogradation percentage, hardness were decreased while viscosity were increased. At excessive nitrogen inputs, the grain quality was deteriorated and the opposite results of structure and physicochemical properties of rice starch were observed. These results indicate that nitrogen fertilizer significantly affected the structure and physicochemical properties of rice starch, and appropriate fertilization would improve rice grain quality.
Effects of Basic Fertilizer Ratio and Nitrogen Topdressing at Jointing Stage on Flour Thermal Properties of Waxy Maize

Abstract:Clarifying the change dynamics of flour thermal properties among different fertilizer treatments could improve the grain quality. In the present study, the effects of basic fertilizer ratio (N, P2O5 and K2O 75 kg/ha single or mix applied) and N topdressing at jointing stage (0, 150 and 300 kg/ha) on the thermal properties of waxy maize flour were studied using Suyunuo5 and Yunuo7 as materials in 2011–13. The results indicated that the flour thermal characteristics were affected by single or interactions of planting year, variety, basic fertilizer ratio and N topdressing. Among different basic fertilizer ratio treatments, gelatinization temperatures were highest at N 75 kg/ha+P2O5 75 kg/ha+K2O 75 kg/ha treatment and lowest at N 75 kg/ha treatment. Gelatinization enthalpy (ΔHgel) was increased by basic fertilizer. Compared with blank, application of N 75 kg/ha+ K2O 75 kg/ha or P2O5 75 kg/ha had no effect on retrogradation enthalpy and retrogradation percentage (%R), and those two parameters decreased by other basic fertilizer treatments. Among different N topdressing treatments, higher gelatinization characteristics were present at N topdressing 150 kg/ha treatment and %R was gradually increased with N rate increase. The plants grown in 2012 had higher rainfall and low sunlight presented higher %R and lower ΔHgel, and plants grown in warm condition had higher gelatinization temperature. The results of correlation and principal component analysis indicated that the main estimation parameters on thermal properties were gelatinization temperature, followed by %R and ΔHgel.
Preparation and characterization of starch carbamate modified natural sodium alginate composite hydrogel blend formulation and its application for slow-release fertilizer

Abstract:The exploration of environmentally friendly slow-release fertilizer (SRF) based on natural bio-polymers is of great importance in the development of modern agriculture and horticulture. Herein, a novel starch carbamate (SC) modified sodium alginate (SA) hydrogel (SC/SAH) was prepared utilizing as-synthesized SC and natural SA through the cationic ions crosslinking method and ultimately the corresponding slow-release fertilizer (SC/SAH-SRF) was successfully developed by immersing the dried SC/SAH matrix into saturated urea solution. Due to the low gelation temperature and high viscosity of the synthesized SC, the formed SC/SAH exhibits significantly enhanced properties including excellent water absorbency up to 8.02 g/g with considerable repeatability, abundant pore structure and high hydrophilicity compared with the neat SAH and natural starch based hydrogel (NS/SAH). Accordingly, the SC/SAH leads to higher urea loading amount ∼ 1.28 g/g. Importantly, the resultant SC/SAH-SRF also shows superior slow-release performance, yielding a cumulative urea release of only 61.6 % within 10 h and almost completely release >16 h in water, what's more, only 58.5 % of the urea releases within 25 days and exceeding 50 days for complete release in soil column assays. The slow-release of urea from SC/SAH-SRF well complies for the first-order kinetics and accomplishes via a non-Fickian diffusion process. Moreover, the pot experiment demonstrates that the SC/SAH-SRF has higher growth promotion role for the maize seedlings than those of others. Consequently, this work provides a novel strategy for preparing environmentally friendly SRF by blending modified starch and hydrogel.
Effects of phosphorus fertilizer on starch granule size distribution in corn kernels

Abstract:Phosphorus is one of the main management factors affecting yield and quality in crops. Starch granule size distribution is an important characteristic that may affect the functionality of corn products. Two corn cultivars were used to investigate the starch granule size distribution in kernels. The results showed the volume percentages of < 3 μm and 3–18 μm starch granules increased with phosphorus rates from 60 to 180 kg ha−1. In contrast, the volume percentages of > 18 μm granules decreased markedly with phosphorus rates from 60 to 180 kg ha−1 in low and normal nitrogen conditions. It has been suggested that phosphorus is favorable for the formation of small and midsize granules. Phosphorus had little influence on the number percentages of > 18 μm and < 18 μm granules in corn kernels. The protein content was positively correlated with volume percentages of < 18 µm granules, but was negatively correlated with > 18 µm granules. The amylose content was negatively correlated with volume percentages of 3–18 µm granules, but was positively correlated with volume percentages of > 18 µm granules. The results suggested that the kernels with more small and midsize starch granules are higher in protein content and lower in amylose content. And a decrease in volume percentage of large granules reduced the amylose content in corn kernels induced by phosphorus. Correlation analysis showed that the peak and final viscosities were negatively correlated with volume percentages of 3–18 µm granules, but were positively correlated with > 18 µm granules. It indicates that the large granules have higher peak and final viscosities compared with small and midsize granules in corn kernels. Phosphorus can reduce the proportion of large starch granules and then reduce the peak and the final viscosity in corn kernels.

Abstract:The modification of starch through agricultural practices is becoming increasingly significant for producing healthy foodstuffs and raw materials for industrial applications, consequently gaining momentum in academic research. This study examined how three different planting densities influenced the distribution of granule sizes, multi-scale structural characteristics, and in vitro digestibility of maize starch. The results showed that planting density significantly enhanced grain yield and relative crystallinity, and significant increases were also observed in the contents of both rapidly and slowly digestible starch. The surface- and volume-weighted mean diameter of granules significantly increased under the medium level (6.75 × 104 plants ha-1), and then decreased under high planting density level. As planting density level increased, the amylose content, peak viscosity, and hardness varied from 23.3 to 26.4 %, from 1962 to 2659 mPa·s, and from 129.3 to 307.6 g, respectively. However, no change was found in crystalline structure of maize starch. These results indicated that optimizing planting density could effectively improve grain yield and starch characteristics of maize, with the best effect under the level of 6.75 × 104 plants ha-1.

Abstract:The effect of fermentation treatment on the surface morphology, crystal structure, molecular weight, chain length distribution, and physicochemical properties of corn starch was investigated using natural fermentation of corn ballast. The amylose content in corn ballast starch reduced at first after natural fermentation, then grew, following the same trend as solubility. There were certain erosion marks on the surfaces of fermented corn ballast starch granules. The crystalline structure of corn ballast starch remained the same, i.e., a typical A-type crystalline structure, at different fermentation times; however, the intensities of diffraction peaks were different. The weight-average molecular weight of starch first increased and then decreased after fermentation. The content of low-molecular-weight starch (peak 3) decreased from 25.59 to 24.7% and then increased to 25.76%, while the content of high-molecular-weight starch (peak 1) increased from 51.45 to 53.26%, and then decreased to 52.52%. The fermentation time showed a negative correlation with the viscosity of starch, and the pasting temperature first increased, and then decreased. Natural fermentation can be used as a technical means to produce corn starch products as a result of the experiments' findings, and future experiments will detect and analyze the bacterial structure of corn fermentation broth in order to better understand the molecular mechanism of natural fermentation affecting the structure and physicochemical properties of corn starch.

Abstract:Nitrogen (N) losses from conventional N fertilizers contribute to environmental degradation and low N use efficiency. Highlighting the need for slow-release fertilizers (SRFs) to mitigate these problems, this study aims to develop slow-release N fertilizers using starch-grafted-poly[(acrylic acid)-co-acrylamide] based nanoclay polymer composites (NCPCs) and investigate their efficacy for slow N delivery in soil. Three types of NCPCs, NCPC(A) (poly [(acrylic acid)-co-acrylamide]), NCPC(W) (wheat starch-grafted-poly[(acrylic acid)-co-acrylamide), and NCPC(M) (maize starch-grafted-poly[(acrylic acid)-co-acrylamide) were prepared and characterized using FTIR spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction techniques. N-release behaviour of the products was assessed under two distinct soils, i.e., Assam (Typic Hapludults, pH 4.2) and Delhi (Typic Haplustepts, pH 7.9) soils. Additionally, the effects of varying soil moisture and temperature levels on N release were studied in the Assam soil. The N-release kinetics of the synthesized fertilizers were assessed using zero-order, first-order, Higuchi, and Korsmeyer−Peppas models. Degradability of the NCPCs was evaluated by measuring evolved CO2–C under various soil conditions as an indicator of microbial degradation. The results indicated that NCPC fertilizers significantly slowed down the release of N compared to urea. According to the R2 values obtained, it was evident that the first-order kinetic model most accurately describes the N release from both urea and NCPC-based N fertilizers in the studied soils. Among the formulations, NCPC(A) exhibited the lowest N release (42.94–53.76%), followed by NCPC(M) (51.05–61.70%), NCPC(W) (54.86–67.75%), and urea (74.33–84.27%) after 21 days of incubation. The rate of N release was lower in the Assam soil compared to the Delhi soil, with higher soil moisture and temperature levels accelerating the release. Starch addition improved the biodegradability of the NCPCs, with NCPC(W) showing the highest cumulative CO2-C evolution (18.18–22.62 mg g−1), followed by NCPC(M) (15.54–20.97 mg g−1) and NCPC(A) (10.89–19.53 mg g−1). In conclusion, NCPC-based slow-release fertilizers demonstrated a more gradual N release compared to conventional urea and the inclusion of starch enhanced their degradability in the soil, which confirms their potential for sustainable agricultural applications. However, soil properties and environmental factors influenced the N release and degradation rates of NCPCs.

Abstract:The starch multiscale structure, physiochemical properties, grain quality and cooked rice texture of high-quality early and late indica were analyzed under nitrogen panicle fertilizer (low panicle fertilizer, LPF; middle panicle fertilizer, MPF; high panicle fertilizer, HPF) treatments and their internal relations were investigated. Compared to the MPF treatment, the starch granules in HPF and LPF had more surface-proteins and irregular voids for high-quality early and late indica rice cultivars, respectively. Nitrogen panicle fertilization application increased amylopectin medium and long chains as well as protein content, resulting in higher relative crystallinity and gelatinization temperatures. Moderate changes in starch multistructures and physicochemical properties such as branching degree, amylopectin medium chain, and pasting viscosities derived from MPF treatment significantly improved processing, appearance qualities and cooked rice texture. Additionally, the decrease in starch branching, gelatinization temperatures, and granule uniformity along with an increase in large granules, breakdown, and △Hgel under MPF treatment were the main reasons for improving rice textural properties.
Late Split-Application with Reduced Nitrogen Fertilizer Increases Yield by Mediating Source–Sink Relations during the Grain Filling Stage in Summer Maize

Abstract:In the North China Plain, the excessive application of nitrogen (N) fertilizer for ensuring high yield and a single application at sowing for simplifying management in farmer practice lead to low N use efficiency and environmental risk in maize (Zea mays L.) production. However, it is unclear whether and how late split application with a lower level of N fertilizer influences maize yield. To address this question, a two-year field experiment was conducted with two commercial maize cultivars (Zhengdan 958 and Denghai 605) using a lower level of N input (180 kg ha−1) by setting up single application at sowing and split application at sowing and later stages (V12, R1, and R2) with four different ratios, respectively. The maize yield with split-applied 180 kg ha−1 N did not decrease compared to the average yield with 240 kg ha−1 N input in farmer practice, while it increased by 6.7% to 11.5% in the four N split-application treatments compared with that of the single-application control. Morphological and physiological analyses demonstrated that late split application of N (i) increased the net photosynthetic rate and chlorophyll content and thus promoted the photosynthetic efficiency during the reproductive stages; (ii) promoted the sink capacity via improved kernel number, endosperm cells division, and grain-filling rate; and (iii) increased the final N content and N efficiency in the plant. Therefore, we propose that late split application of N could reduce N fertilizer input and coordinately improve N efficiency and grain yield in summer maize production, which are likely achieved by optimizing the source–sink relations during the grain-filling stage.

Abstract:Nitrogen fertilizer is essential for rice growth and development, and topdressing nitrogen fertilizer at panicle stage has a huge impact on rice grain quality. However, the effect of panicle nitrogen fertilizer (PNF) on starch physicochemical properties and fine structure remain unclear. In this study, four PNF levels (0, 60, 120, 180 kg N ha−1) were grown with the same basal and tiller fertilizer (150 kg N ha−1). The starch physicochemical properties, fine structure, texture properties and eating quality of two japonica rice were determined. We found that the content of total protein, crude fat and amylose between superior and inferior grains were significantly different. Compared with inferior grains, superior grains had low relative crystallinity, good pasting characteristics and outstanding eating quality. With the increase of nitrogen application rates, the starch volume mean diameter was lower; the average chain length of amylopectin was longer; and the relative crystallinity of starch was higher. The changes above in starch structure resulted in an increase in starch solubility, swelling power and gelatinization enthalpy, and led to a decrease in retrogradation enthalpy, retrogradation percentage and pasting viscosity, consequently contributing to the increase in hardness and stickiness of rice and the deterioration of taste value. These results indicated that topdressing PNF lengthened the amylopectin chain, decreased starch granule size, enhanced crystallization stability and increased gelatinization enthalpy, which were the direct reasons for the deterioration of cooking and eating quality.
