Abstract:We made a study of the effects of the combined application of organic fertilizer with various nitrogen,phosphate and potassium on the maize ears and yield and their relationship.The experimental results show that varying fertilizer ratio has dramatic effect on maize ears and yield.The economic characters will vary accordingly.When the ear is 1.14 cm longer,the fruiting ear will be increased by 0.48 cm,the weight of a single ear by 13.3% than CK,the seed rate by 1.9%,the weight of corncob by 7.5%,the TKW by 25.1%;the average yield increase will be 1389.4 kg/hm2 and the production will be increased by 22.8%.The best yield fertilizer rate is the combined application of 63～71 kg/hm2 of nitrogen,P_2O_5 and K_2O each and 52.5～105 kg/hm2 of organic fertilizer.The best seed yield fertilizer ratio is the combined application of 63 kg/hm2 of nitrogen,P_2O_5 and K_2O each and 105 kg/hm2 of organic fertilizer.The best ear weight and TKW fertilizer ratio is 71～79 kg/hm2 of nitrogen,P_2O_5 and K_2O each and 0～52.5 kg/hm2 of organic fertilizer.
Effects of Nitrogen and Potassium Supply on Grain Yield and Quality in Weak Gluten Wheat

Abstract:Field trials were conducted in Nanjing(118°48′ E,32°05′ N) and Jingxian(117°17′ E,30°37′ N) to investigate the effects of different rates of nitrogen(N) and potassium(K) on grain yield and quality,and their relationships with leaf N and K nutrition status at anthesis of weak gluten wheat(Triticum aestivum L.) Ningmai9.The results showed that N and K fertilization significantly increased grain yield,protein content,wet gluten content,SDS-sedimentation volume and dough development time as compared with no N and K treatment(P< 0.01).Nitrogen fertilization significantly increased dough stability time and valorimeter value(P< 0.01),but markedly decreased starch content(P< 0.01),whereas potassium fertilization had insignificant effect on starch content,dough stability time and valorimeter value.The interaction of N and K significantly enhanced grain yield,and the contents of starch, protein and wet gluten(P<0.05),but had insignificant effects on SDS-sedimentation volume and dough rheological characteristics.In addition,the effects of N and K fertilization on grain yield and quality showed the similar result. Furthermore,the contents of N and K in leaves at anthesis increased with the supply of N and K,and the ratio of nitrogen to potassium enhanced with N supply, but decreased with K supply.Grain yield,protein content,wet gluten content and SDS-sedimentation volume showed a strong quadratic curve correlation with the ratio of nitrogen to potassium.The results suggested that suitable ratio of leaf N to K at anthesis based on higher leaf N and K nutrition was the vital physiological basis for synchronously improving grain yield and quality of weak gluten wheat.Under the experimental condition,the suitable fertilization rate of nitrogen and potassium was 225 and 75 kg·ha~(-1),respectively,and the reasonable ratio of N to K at anthesis reached 1.5 for high yielding and quality weak gluten wheat production.
Effects of Basic Fertilizer Ratio and Nitrogen Topdressing at Jointing Stage on Flour Thermal Properties of Waxy Maize

Abstract:Clarifying the change dynamics of flour thermal properties among different fertilizer treatments could improve the grain quality. In the present study, the effects of basic fertilizer ratio (N, P2O5 and K2O 75 kg/ha single or mix applied) and N topdressing at jointing stage (0, 150 and 300 kg/ha) on the thermal properties of waxy maize flour were studied using Suyunuo5 and Yunuo7 as materials in 2011–13. The results indicated that the flour thermal characteristics were affected by single or interactions of planting year, variety, basic fertilizer ratio and N topdressing. Among different basic fertilizer ratio treatments, gelatinization temperatures were highest at N 75 kg/ha+P2O5 75 kg/ha+K2O 75 kg/ha treatment and lowest at N 75 kg/ha treatment. Gelatinization enthalpy (ΔHgel) was increased by basic fertilizer. Compared with blank, application of N 75 kg/ha+ K2O 75 kg/ha or P2O5 75 kg/ha had no effect on retrogradation enthalpy and retrogradation percentage (%R), and those two parameters decreased by other basic fertilizer treatments. Among different N topdressing treatments, higher gelatinization characteristics were present at N topdressing 150 kg/ha treatment and %R was gradually increased with N rate increase. The plants grown in 2012 had higher rainfall and low sunlight presented higher %R and lower ΔHgel, and plants grown in warm condition had higher gelatinization temperature. The results of correlation and principal component analysis indicated that the main estimation parameters on thermal properties were gelatinization temperature, followed by %R and ΔHgel.
Effects of Fertilization with Reducing Nitrogen, Controlling Phosphorus and Stabilizing Potassium on Rice Yield and Nutrient Accumulation

Abstract:Excessive application of nitrogen and phosphorus and lower potassium supply not only limit rice growth,but also reduce nutrient use efficiency.In this paper,a field experiment was conducted to study the effects of reducing nitrogen and phosphorus dosages and stabilizing potassium supply on rice yield,nutrient accumulation and fertilizer use efficiency.There were fourteen treatments with two replications.The results indicate that the straw biomass and grain yields of the treatments with integrated N-K,P-K,or N-P-K applications are significantly(P0.05) higher than those of the no fertilizer treatment.The straw biomass of the treatment with less nitrogen and phosphorus and more potassium application(T11,modified treatment,N 225 kg/ha,P2O5 60 kg/ha and K2O 90 kg/ha) is significantly(P0.05) higher than that of the conventional fertilization treatment(CFA,N 300 kg/ha,P2O5 150 kg/ha,K2O 60 kg/ha) and the differences of kernel weight and grain yield between the two treatments are obvious.The nitrogen and potassium contents in shoots at the tillering stage and in straw at the harvest stage,the accumulated nitrogen and potassium amounts in above ground organs at the harvest stage,as well as apparent nitrogen and phosphorus use efficiencies of the modified treatment are significantly(P0.05) higher than those of CFA.These results imply that properly reducing nitrogen and phosphorus dosages,and increasing potassium dosages could catch nitrogen and potassium need of rice plants,increase dry matter accumulation and grain yield,and improve apparent nitrogen and phosphorus use efficiencies.The fertilization scheme of N 196.2 kg/ha,P2O5 46.5 kg/ha and K2O 90 kg/ha should be recommended for practical rice production under local conditions.
Effects of the Foliar Application of Potassium Fertilizer on the Grain Protein and Dough Quality of Wheat

Abstract:Potassium (K) has a significant effect on wheat yield and quality. Owing to the limitations of irrigation and production costs, soil-based applications of potassium fertilizer are not performed in wheat production on the Loess Plateau of China. In the late growth stage of wheat, potassium deficiency occurs even under sufficient nitrogen/phosphorus (N/P) levels, so it is necessary to supplement potassium through foliar spraying. However, there are few studies on the effect of the foliar application of potassium fertilizer (KFA) on wheat quality. Field experiments were conducted at two experimental sites for 2 years to study the effects of different potassium fertilizer application levels and periods on wheat yield and quality. The results showed that KFA had no significant effect on the yield of the wheat variety Xinong 20 (XN20) but increased the yield of the wheat variety Xiaoyan 22 (XY22). The improvement effect of KFA on the wet gluten content and stabilization time (ST) of XN20 was better than that on these parameters of XY22, while the sedimentation value (SV) and formation time (FT) showed the opposite trend. KFA significantly reduced the albumin content of the two varieties but had no significant effect on the globulin content. Compared with that at the other two stages, the potassium application in the form of potash fertilizer spray at a concentration of 60 mmol L−1 (K2) at the flowering stage (BBCH 65) significantly increased the protein content, wet gluten content, SV and gluten protein content in XN20 grains, whereas the application at 10 days after flowering (AA10, BBCH 71) at the K2 concentration was more beneficial to prolonging the dough FT. For XY22, the application of potassium fertilizer at the K2 concentration at the flowering stage increased the wet gluten and gluten protein levels and dough development time. There were significant genotypic differences in the composition and content of HMW-GS between the two varieties. KFA significantly increased the levels of the 1, 7 + 8, and 4 + 12 subunits in XN20 and the 1 subunit in XY22, but had no significant effect on the 2 + 12 subunit in XY22. Partial least squares path modelling (PLS-PM) analysis showed that the processing quality indexes (SV, FT, ST) and gluten protein and HMW-GS levels were regulated by the potassium fertilizer foliar spraying stage and concentration and revealed in part that KFA affected the processing quality by affecting the HMW-GS content.
Effects of Nitrogen and Potassium on Key Regulatory Enzyme Activities for Grain Starch in Winter Wheat

Abstract:【Objective】 The objective is to evaluate the effects of nitrogen and potassium fertilization on wheat key regulatory enzymes for grain starch.【Method】 Under the condition treated with two fertilization levels of nitrogen (0 and 225 kg N·ha-1) and potassium (0 and 150 kg K2O ha-1) in the field, two winter wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) cultivars differing in gluten content, ‘Ningmai 9’ (low) and ‘Yangmai 10’ (medium), were planted in the field to investigate the activities of enzymes for starch formation and starch content of grain and the relationship with fertilization levels. 【Result】The results showed that the changing patterns in the sucrose content, the activities of enzymes for starch formation and starch content of grain were similar in two cultivars, but the enzyme activities and the contents of sucrose and starch were higher in ‘Ningmai 9’ than in ‘Yangmai 10’. Compared with non-nitrogen and non-potassium fertilization (N0K0) treatment, N and K fertilization increased sucrose content, the activities of SS, SSS and GBSS and starch yield in grains, but decreased the content of total starch and amylopectin in grain. Grain amylose contents were decreased by nitrogen fertilization, while increased by potassium in two wheat cultivars. Compared with potassium fertilization, the role of nitrogen on sucrose content and relative enzyme activities was greater. 【Conclusion】 Correlated analysis indicates that the activity of SSS and GBSS in grain, which was increased by appropriate flag leaf N/K ratio at anthesis with N and K supply, is the key physiological basis for starch formation. Grain GBSS activity, which increased by potassium fertilization, is the enzymology basis for K enhancing grain amylose contents. Higher enzyme activity of SS, SSS and GBSS is the enzymology base of higher starch contents for weak gluten cultivar ‘Ningmai 9’ than for medium gluten cultivar ‘Yangmai 10’.

Abstract:Reasonable nitrogen (N) and potassium (K) application rates can effectively improve fertilizer use efficiency, rice yield and quality. A two-year field experiment was conducted with combined application of three N rates (135, 180, and 225 kg ha -1 , denoted as N1-N3) and four K rates (0, 90, 135, and 180 kg ha -1 , denoted as K0-K3) using super indica hybrid rice cultivar Yixiangyou (YXY) 2115 to explore the effects of co-application of N and K on rice growth and development. The results indicated that the combined application of N and K had significantly interactive effects on dry matter (DM) accumulation, nutrients absorption, N harvest index (NHI), K harvest index (KHI), spikelets per panicle and most rice quality indexes. The highest total DM accumulation (17998.17-19432.47 kg ha -1 ) at maturity stage was obtained under N3K2. The effect of co-application of N and K on nutrients absorption and utilization varied between the two years and within each year. The highest total N and K accumulations at maturity stage were observed under N3K1 and N3K2, respectively, while the highest N recovery efficiency (NRE) and K recovery efficiency (KRE) were observed under N1K3. High expression levels of N and K metabolism-related genes in rice grains were observed under N3K2 or N3K3, consistent with N and K uptake. Co-application of N and K increased rice yield significantly and the highest yield (6745.02-7010.27 kg ha -1 ) was obtained under N2K2. As more N was gradually applied, rice appearance quality improved but milling, cooking and eating quality decreased. Although appropriate application of K could improve rice milling, cooking and eating quality, it reduced appearance quality. The optimal milling, cooking and eating quality were obtained under N1K2, while the best appearance quality was obtained under N3K0. Overall, a combination of 135-210 kg ha -1 N and 115-137 kg ha -1 K application rates was recommended for achieving relatively higher yield and better quality in rice production.

Abstract:Introduction: Nitrogen (N) plays a pivotal role in the growth, development, and yield of maize. An optimal N application rate is crucial for enhancing N and carbohydrate (C) accumulation in waxy maize grains, which in turn synergistically improves grain weight. Methods: A 2-year field experiment was conducted to evaluate the impact of different N application rates on two waxy maize varieties, Jinnuo20 (JN20) and Jindannuo41 (JDN41), during various grain filling stages. The applied N rates were 0 (N0), 120 (N1), 240 (N2), and 360 (N3) kg N ha-1. Results: The study revealed that N application significantly influenced nitrogen accumulation, protein components (gliadin, albumin, globulin, and glutelin), carbohydrate contents (soluble sugars, amylose, and amylopectin), and activities of enzymes related to N and C metabolism in waxy maize grains. Notable varietal differences in these parameters were observed. In both varieties, the N2 treatment consistently resulted in the highest values for almost all measured traits compared to the other N treatments. Specifically, the N2 treatment yielded an average increase in grain dry matter of 21.78% for JN20 and 17.11% for JDN41 compared to N0. The application of N positively influenced the activities of enzymes involved in C and N metabolism, enhancing the biosynthesis of grain protein, amylose, and amylopectin while decreasing the accumulation of soluble sugars. This modulation of the C/N ratio in the grains directly contributed to an increase in grain dry weight. Conclusion: Collectively, our findings underscore the critical role of N in regulating kernel N and C metabolism, thereby influencing dry matter accumulation in waxy maize grains during the grain filling stage.
Effects of nitrogen and potassium fertilization on key regulation enzyme activities involved in grain protein formation in winter wheat

Abstract:Field experiment was conducted in 2004-2005 using two winter wheat cultivars differing in grain protein content,Ningmai 9' (low protein) and Yangmai 10' (medium protein) in order to investigate the effects of N and K rates on key enzyme activities for protein formation in flag leaves and grains,grain protein contents,and their relationships with leaf N and K nutrition status at anthesis. The results showed that free amino acid contents and GS activities in flag leaves and grains,and GPT activity in grains all increased with nitrogen and potassium supply. Compared with potassium fertilization,the effects of N on free amino acid contents and relative enzyme activities for grain protein formation were greater than those of K,with largest effects from N K treatment,and greater with Yangmai 10' than with Ningmai 9'. The N/K ratio in flag leaves at anthesis showed quadratic curve with nitrogen supply,while decreased with potassium supply. Correlation analysis showed that the GS activity and grain protein content both had significant quadratic correlations with leaf N/K ratio at anthesis. The results suggested that the leaf N/K ratio at anthesis was the vital factor for affecting grain protein formation under different nitrogen and potassium supply.
Application of moderate nitrogen levels alleviates yield loss and grain quality deterioration caused by post-silking heat stress in fresh waxy maize

Abstract:High temperature (HT) during grain filling is one of the most important environmental factors limiting maize yield and grain quality. Nitrogen (N) fertilizer is essential for maintaining normal plant growth and defense against environmental stresses. The effects of three N rates and two temperature regimes on the grain yield and quality of fresh waxy maize were studied using the hybrids Suyunuo 5 (SYN5) and Yunuo 7 (YN7) as materials. N application rates were 1.5, 4.5, and 7.5 g plant<sup>−1</sup>, representing low, moderate, and high N levels (LN, MN, and HN, respectively). Mean day/night temperatures during the grain filling of spring- and summer-sown plants were 27.6/21.0 °C and 28.6/20.0 °C for ambient temperature (AT) and 35/21.0 °C and 35/20.0 °C for HT, respectively. On average, HT reduced kernel number, weight, yield, and moisture content by 29.8%, 17.9%, 38.7%, and 3.3%, respectively. Kernel number, weight, yield, moisture, and starch contents were highest under MN among the three N rates under both temperature regimes. HT reduced grain starch content at all N levels. HT increased grain protein content, which gradually increased with N rate. Mean starch granule size under MN was larger (10.9 μm) than that under LN and HN (both 10.4 μm) at AT. However, the mean size of starch granules was higher under LN (11.7 μm) and lower under MN (11.2 μm) at HT. Iodine binding capacity (IBC) was lowest under MN and highest under HN among the three N levels under both temperature regimes. In general, IBC at all N rates was increased by HT. Peak viscosity (PV) was gradually reduced with increasing N rate at AT. In comparison with LN, PV was increased by MN and decreased by HN at HT. Retrogradation percentage gradually increased with N rate at AT, but was lowest under MN among the three N rates at HT. LN + AT and MN + HT produced grain with high pasting viscosity and low retrogradation tendency. MN application could alleviate the negative effects of HT on the grain yield and quality of fresh waxy maize.
Effects of Potassium Fertilizer Application Rates on Plant Potassium Accumulation and Grain Quality of Japonica Rice

Abstract:A three-year experiment was conducted in order to examine the effects of potassium (K) application rates on plant K accumulation, K use efficiency and grain quality of japonica rice (Wuxiangjing14 and Wuyujing3) from 2000 to 2002 in Dongtai, Jiangsu, China. When K fertilizer was applied as basal dressing, K uptake of rice population amounted to maximum at the K2O application rate of 12.8 kg/667m2 and excessive-fertilization decreased population K uptake, grains K absorption always increased with the increase of K fertilizer application rate, only the increment extent decreased gradually. Potassium uptake by rice population peaked in the growth season from the elongation stage to the heading stage. Non-fertilization and excessive-fertilization enhanced the proportion of plant K uptake before the elongation stage, but reduced effective panicles. With one-time application of K fertilizer as basal dressing, the highest grain yield and quality occurred at the level of 1∶0.8 of N∶K2O ratio, which significantly increased the percentage of earbearing tiller and setting percentage and K physiological and agronomy efficiencies. Also, low chalkiness degree and amylose content were found at this level. Compared to one-time application of K fertilizer as basal dressing, fertilization as panicle fertilizer caused increases in plant K uptake and proportion from elongation stage to heading stage, the number of filled grain, the setting percentage and gel consistency. Moreover, K fertilization as panicle fertilizer significantly decreased chalkiness degree and amylose content, resulting in considerable high grain yield and quality.
Potassium Supply Affected Plant Nitrogen Accumulation and Translocation and Grain Protein Formation in Winter Wheat

Abstract:【Objective】In order to elucidate the regulation mechanism of potassium on plant nitrogen accumulation,translocation,grain protein and protein components formation.【Method】Two winter wheat(Triticum Aestivum L.)cultivars differing in grain protein content,Ningmai 9(low protein)and Yangmai 10(medium protein)were grown to investigate the effects of different potassium rates on plant nitrogen accumulation,translocation of pre-anthesis nitrogen reserves,leaf potassium content at anthesis,and their relationships to the contents of grain protein and protein components.【Result】The potassium supply enhanced total protein content,but the effects of potassium on the contents of globulin and gliadin were significant whereas that was insignificant on glutenin content as compared with the non-potassium treatment.Thus,the ratio of Glu/Gli decreased markedly.Potassium fertilization very markedly enhanced pre-anthesis nitrogen accumulation and stored nitrogen translocation through increasing leaf potassium content at anthesis.Higher leaf potassium content at anthesis very significantly increased post-anthesis nitrogen accumulation of Yangmai 10,but for Ningmai 9,slightly.Compared with Ningmai 9,the role of potassium in raising the contents of grain protein and protein components was greater for Yangmai 10.【Conclusion】Under the experimental condition,the results suggest that post-anthesis nitrogen accumulation,which was very significantly increased by higher leaf potassium content at anthesis,is the vital physiological basis for determining grain protein formation of Yangmai 10,while pre-anthesis stored nitrogen translocation is for Ningmai 9,and the reasonable potassium rate for synchronously improved grain yield and quality of weak gluten wheat Ningmai 9 and medium gluten wheat Yangmai 10 could be K2O 150 and 225 kg·ha-1,respectively.
Gradual Application of Potassium Fertilizer Elevated the Sugar Conversion Mechanism and Yield of Waxy and Sweet Fresh-Eaten Maize in the Semiarid Cold Region

Abstract:Fresh-eaten maize (Zea mays L.) is favored by consumers for its unique flavor, good health, and medical effects. Heilongjiang province is a semiarid cold region with the annual output of 3.35 billion ears, and the demand for fresh eaten maize is increasing in the region. Therefore, improving its yield and quality is urgently needed in this area. In this study, two of thirty varieties (waxy maize Jin-262 and sweet maize Jingke-183) were used and five proportions of potassium (K2O, 120 kg/ha) were applied at sowing, jointing, and large trumpet stages to identify the high yield and quality of fresh-eaten maize under a semiarid cold ecological condition in Daqing, Heilongjiang province, China, during 2017-2018. The results from the screening of eighteen maize varieties showed that waxy maize Jin-262 and sweet maize Jingke-183 had higher starch content and soluble sucrose contents than those of other varieties. While the potassium proportions application during the sowing (20%), jointing (40%), and large trumpet stages (40%) had further significantly increased the starch content, soluble sugar content, sucrose content, and sucrose metabolic enzymes activities of Jin-262 and Jingke-183, however, the yields of Jin-262 and Jingke-183 had increased by applying potassium fertilizer during the sowing stages (50%) and jointing stages (50%). Considering the overall higher maize quality, we recommended the waxy maize Jin-262 and sweet maize Jingke-183 varieties along with application of 20% (sowing), 40% (jointing), and 40% (large trumpet stages) of 120 kg/ha potassium fertilizer for the improvement of grain quality of maize planting in the semiarid cold region. Otherwise, reasonable gradual potassium fertilization might be a wiser option.

Abstract:High-density planting aggravates competition among plants and has a negative impact on plant growth and productivity. Nitrogen application and chemical control can improve plant growth and increase grain yield in high-density planting. Our experiment explored the effects of nitrogen fertilizer and plant growth regulators on maize root-bleeding sap, phosphorus (P) and potassium (K) accumulation and translocation, and grain yield and quality in high-density planting. We established a field study during the 2017 and 2018 growing seasons, with three nitrogen levels of N100 (100 kg ha −1 ), N200 (200 kg ha −1 ), and N300 (300 kg ha −1 ) at high-density planting (90,000 plants ha −1 ), and applied Yuhuangjin (a plant growth regulator mixture of 3% DTA-6 and 27% ethephon) at the 7th leaf. Our results showed that N200 application combined with chemical control could regulate amino acid and mineral nutrient concentration delivery rates in root-bleeding sap and improve its sap rate. Also, the treated plant exhibited higher P and K uptake and translocation ability. Furthermore, chemical control and N200 treatment maintained a high level of ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase (RuBPCase), phosphoenolpyruvate carboxylase (PEPCase), nitrate reductase (NR), and glutamine synthetase (GS) enzymatic activities in leaves. In addition, plant growth regulator and nitrogen application improved the enzymatic activities of GS, glutamate dehydrogenase (GDH), and glutamic pyruvic transaminase (GPT) and the contents of crude protein, lysine, sucrose, and soluble sugar in grain and ultimately increased maize yield. This study suggests that N200 application in combination with chemical control promotes root vitality and nutrient accumulation and could improve grain yield and quality in high-density planting.

Abstract:Potassium (K) is an essential macronutrient for crop growth but it catches less attention than either nitrogen or phosphorus regarding their role in escalating crop yield. However, increasing evidences support the fact that K application enables crop to enhance resistance to lodging, but little is known about how maize resistance to lodging is affected by K distribution in shoot. We conducted a two-year field experiment including 6 levels of K application, monitored K uptake and distribution in different parts of shoot, and examined the effect of K application on stalk bending resistance of maize. K application significantly enhanced above-ground K uptake of maize. Across growing season, maize increased K uptake in the vegetative period while leveled off after anthesis. Stalk contained greater proportion of K than other parts, and stalk increased but ear rarely altered the K proportion with K application increase. K application significantly enhanced the bending resistant strength of maize stalk. The bending resistant strength was positively correlated with the diameter/length ratio, dry matter linear density and stalk K concentration, but those two internode morphological traits played more important role. We concluded that K application promoted K allocation to stalk and enhanced maize resistance to stalk lodging by modifying the internode traits. The study provides evidence for the importance of K application in maize production on soils with high stalk lodging risk.

Nitrogen Supply Affects Yield and Grain Filling of Maize by Regulating Starch Metabolizing Enzyme Activities and Endogenous Hormone Contents

Abstract:This study aimed to examine the effect of nitrogen (N) application rate and time on yield, grain filling, starch metabolizing enzymes, and hormones of maize based on a long-term field experiment initiated in 2012. The total N fertilizer dose [(0 (N0), 100 (N1), 200 (N2), and 300 (N3) kg N ha –1 ] was split into two (T1, one-third at sowing and two-thirds at the six-leaf stage) or three (T2, one-third each at sowing, six-leaf, and eleven-leaf stage) times application. The results showed that the highest yield was obtained under N3T2, N2T1, and N3T2 in 2018, 2019, and 2020, which was 222.49, 185.31, and 194.00% than that of N0 in each year, respectively. N2 and N3 significantly increased the yield through enhancing ears ha –1 , grains per plant, and 100-grain weight; however, N2 and N3 did not show a significant difference in yield and above-yield components. In addition, N application time did not significantly change yield under the same N rate. N0 limited the activities of starch metabolizing enzymes, resulting in insufficient accumulation of sucrose and starch. The contents of indole-3-acetic acid, cytokinin, abscisic acid, and gibberellin were decreased under N0 during grain filling. The average grain-filling rate and maximum grain-filling rate ( G max ) and grain weight increment achieving G max increased under N2 and N3, and the grain-filling parameters were positively correlated with 100-grain weight. In conclusion, 200 kg N ha –1 with one-third application at sowing and two-thirds application at the six-leaf stage is a suitable N supply way to improve starch metabolizing enzymes, regulate hormone content, and enhance grain-filling rates, and thus increasing the maize yield in the semiarid Loess Plateau of China.

Abstract:A field experiment was conducted from 2008 to 2010 to reveal the effects of different nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P)and potassium (K)treatments on rice yield,quality,nutrient absorption-utilization and economic benefit by using the “3414 ”fertilizer experiment design.Results showed that N,P and K fertilization significantly increased rice grain yield,and the effect of combined application of those three fertilizers on grain yield was better than the combination of any of two fertilizers;the yield-increasing effect followed the order of N>K>P.The highest yield was obtained in N3 P2 K2 treatment,being 8746 kg/hm2 .N fertilization improved gel consistency (GC),protein content (PC)and total amino acid content,meanwhile reduced alkali spreading value (ASV);P fertilization improved PC;K fertilization improved GC,ASV and PC.The rice total nutrient (N,P2 O 5 ,K2 O)accumulation and nutrient absorption rates per 100 kg seeds increased with increasing fertilizer application rates,while the nutrient absorption and utilization efficiency and agronomic efficiency decreased with the increase of applied fertilizer rates.The absorption and utilization efficiency for N,P and K were 25 .2%,38.3% and 36.0%,respectively.The economic benefits were increased by 21 . 1 %,20.3%,20.3% and 22.4% for N2 P2 K2 ,N2 P3 K2 ,N2 P2 K1 and N3 P2 K2 treatments,respectively,compared with N0 P0 K0 treatment.According to the fertilizer effect equations,the N,P(P2 O 5 )and K(K2 O)application rates for the highest grain yield were 258.8 kg/hm2 ,39.3 kg/hm2 and 100.8 kg/hm2 ,respectively.
Effects of Sulfur Application on the Quality of Fresh Waxy Maize

Abstract:Balanced fertilizer application is crucial for achieving high-yield, high-quality, and efficient maize cultivation. Sulfur (S), considered a secondary nutrient, ranks as the fourth most essential plant nutrient after nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), and potassium (K). S deficiency could significantly influence maize growth and development. Field experiments were conducted in Jiangsu, Yangzhou, China, from April 1 to July 20 in 2023. Jingkenuo2000 (JKN2000) and Suyunuo5 (SYN5) were used as experiment materials, and four treatments were set: no fertilizer application (F0), S fertilizer application (F1), conventional fertilization method (F2), and conventional fertilization method with additional S application (F3). The objective was to investigate the impact of S application on grain weight and the quality of fresh waxy maize flour and starch. The results indicated that all fertilization treatments significantly increased grain weight and the starch and protein contents in grains compared to no fertilization. Among these, F3 exhibited the most significant increases. Specifically, in JKN2000, the grain weight, starch content (SC), and protein content (PC) increased by 27.7%, 4.8%, and 14.8%, respectively, while in SYN5, these parameters increased by 26.3%, 6.2%, and 7.4%, respectively, followed by F2 and F1. Compared to F0, F3 increased starch and protein contents by 4.8% and 14.8% in JKN2000, and by 6.2% and 7.4% in SYN5. Compared to F0, F2 and F3 significantly increased the iodine binding capacity (IBC) of SYN5, with F3 being more effective than F2, while they had no significant effect on the IBC of JKN2000. The peak viscosity (PV) and breakdown viscosity (BD) of waxy maize flour and starch for both varieties showed a consistent response (increasing trend) to S application, and F3 had the largest increase. Regarding the thermal properties of waxy maize flour, F3 significantly enhanced the retrogradation enthalpy (ΔHgel) of both varieties compared to F0, while achieving the lowest retrogradation percentage (%R). In starch, the highest ΔHgel and the lowest %R were observed under the F2 treatment. In summary, under the conditions of this experiment, adding S fertilizer to conventional fertilization not only increased the grain weight of waxy maize but also effectively optimized the pasting and thermal properties of waxy maize flour and starch.

Abstract:We propose to implement a nonmetallic low-loss cloak for the infrared range from identical chalcogenide glass resonators. Based on transformation optics for cylindrical objects, our approach does not require metamaterial response to be homogeneous and accounts for the discrete nature of elementary responses governed by resonator shape, illumination angle, and inter-resonator coupling. Air fractions are employed to obtain the desired distribution of the cloak effective parameters. The effect of cloaking is verified by full-wave simulations of the true multiresonator structure. The feasibility of cloak fabrication is demonstrated by prototyping glass grating structures with the dimensions characteristic for the cloak resonators.
Improving maize carbon and nitrogen metabolic pathways and yield with nitrogen application rate and nitrogen forms

Abstract:Reduced fertilizer efficiency caused by excessive use of nitrogen (N) fertilizer is a major problem in agriculture and a hot topic of research. Most studies have focused on the effect of N application rate on N efficiency, whereas there are limited studies on changing the N form to improve N yield and efficiency. Here, the effects of different N application rates and nitrate-to-ammonium N ratios on post-anthesis carbon (C) and N metabolism and maize yield under shallow-buried drip irrigation were investigated. Two rates of N application (210 kg·ha −1 (NA1) and 300 kg·ha −1 (NA2)) and three nitrate-to-ammonium N ratios (2:1 (NF1), 3:1 (NF2), and 4:1 (NF3)) were utilized. Post-anthesis photosynthetic characteristics, activities of key enzymes in photosynthetic C and N metabolism, nonstructural carbohydrate content, post-anthesis N accumulation and transportation, yield, and N-use efficiency were determined. At both N application rates, NF2 treatment enhanced photosynthetic activity in the ear-leaf at silking stage and promoted key enzyme activities of C and N metabolic pathways, compared with NF1 and NF3. Furthermore, NF2 significantly increased nonstructural carbohydrate accumulation (4.00–64.71%), post-anthesis N accumulation and transportation (11.00–38.00%), and grain yield (2.60–13.08%). No significant differences between NA1 and NA2 were observed under NF2 in most of the measured variables; however, NA1 had higher N-use efficiency. Thus, the optimal treatment under shallow-buried drip irrigation was a N application rate of 210 kg ha −1 and a nitrate-to-ammonium N ratio of 3:1. These findings provide theoretical guidance on appropriate N applications for high-yield maize production.
