Abstract:The ecotone from oasis to desert is an important area for combating sandy desertification. Three dominant desert shrubs (Nitraria tangutorum, Calligonuum mongolicum, Haloxylon ammodendrori) were selected in Minqin Oasis, Northwest China, to determine the groundwater level; soil water potential; and change of the three shrubs in density, coverage, and biomass along the natural and seminatural oasis-desert ecotone (ODE), respectively. The results indicated that traits of desert plant interaction with the topsoil water and groundwater depth along the ODE play an important role in generating complex desert vegetation spatial dynamics. Some natural desert plant species with shallow root systems will distribute themselves according to distribution of topsoil water. Thus, the distribution of Nitraria tangutorum had a decreasing trend in distribution along ODE. Calligonuum mongolicum occurs in different trends in natural and seminatural ODE due to utilizing groundwater as well as topsoil water. Some plant species with deep roots, such as Haloxylon ammodendron, will show more degradation near oases and will exhibit an ascending trend along ODE. Therefore, it is of primary importance to protect the integrity of groundwater depth in order to protect the stability of the oasis-desert ecotones.

Abstract:Groundwater plays a crucial role in regulating plant growth in arid regions and has significant effects on plant physiological mechanisms. However, research on the influence of groundwater change on plant ecological stoichiometry is still limited. Therefore, this study was carried out to obtain the variations in assimilated branches and soil ecological stoichiometry of two dominant species in the Gurbantunggut Desert ( Haloxylon ammodendron and Haloxylon persicum ) at different groundwater depths to reveal the responses of desert plants to groundwater depth changes. The results showed that (1) H. persicum branches' stress tolerance indicators (C:N, C:P) are higher, while nutritional indicators (N:P) are lower. The soil nutrient of H. ammodendron is richer. (2) The ecological stoichiometry varied significantly along the groundwater gradient. With the deepening of groundwater, the branches C, N and P increased, and the variation in element ratio was inconsistent. Most of the soil properties was inversely proportional to the depth of groundwater. (3) Groundwater depth was a vital environmental factor affecting the assimilated branches ecological stoichiometry. Soil properties also had a significant influence on element accumulation in assimilated branches. (4) Regulating the allocation of branches ecological stoichiometry is an adaptation of two Haloxylon species to cope with local hydrological conditions changes. These findings provide novel insights into desert plant responses to different groundwater conditions within fragile desert ecosystems and may have implications for the implementation of effective measures related to the stability and sustainability of desert ecosystems.

Abstract:Irrational water usage in the middle reaches of inland rivers is detrimental to downstream oases, and the Qingtu Oasis is a typical downstream oasis that is degraded by water resource scarcity. The Qingtu Lake ecological water diversion project (EWDP) has restored the oasis, but the response pattern of different vegetation communities to environmental water and the dominant drivers of vegetation dynamics are not clear. Here, based on ground and satellite observations, this study investigated the spatial and temporal patterns of vegetation distribution and growth in the Qingtu Oasis from 2010 to 2022, and the reasons for the interannual variability in vegetation growth were also explained. The results showed that temporal variations in the distribution area of Phragmites australis (PA) followed a logistic curve after the EWDP, which increased rapidly from 2010 to 2019 and stabilized afterward. Meanwhile, the distribution area of Nitraria tangutorum (NT) presented a linear increase during the study period, with a 121.2% increase. Due to water inundation, the central region was occupied by PA communities, while NT communities moved to the edge. The spatial connectivity of PA patches increased significantly in contrast to the overall fragmentation tendency of NT patches in 2010–2022. The oasis tended to be homogenized and aggregated according to the morphological spatial pattern analysis, along with the landscape diversity and contagion indices. Enhanced vegetation growth, as indicated by the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI), was observed in 76.1% of the vegetated lands, and the NDVI increasing rate was high near the canal. Using the random forest model, this study found that changes in groundwater depth were the most important driver of NDVI variability. The following influencing factors were atmospheric CO 2 concentration, water inundation area and water delivery amount. In the absence of large increases in water delivery amount, oasis vegetation growth was susceptible to prolonged droughts. This study uncovers a nonlinear response of different vegetation communities to climate change and the EWDP in the downstream region of arid endorheic basins and identifies meteorological droughts as a key factor that should be fully considered in water delivery strategies. These findings lay a solid foundation for managing oasis restoration and water resource allocation in arid inland river basins.

Abstract:Tamarix taklamakanensis, a dominant species in the Taklimakan Desert of China, plays a crucial role in stabilizing sand dunes and maintaining regional ecosystem stability. This study aimed to determine the water use strategies of T. taklamakanensis in the Taklimakan Desert under a falling groundwater depth. Four typical T. taklamakanensis nabkha habitats (sandy desert of Tazhong site, saline desert-alluvial plain of Qiemo site, desert-oasis ecotone of Qira site and desert-oasis ecotone of Aral site) were selected with different climate, soil, groundwater and plant cover conditions. Stable isotope values of hydrogen and oxygen were measured for plant xylem water, soil water (soil depths within 0–500 cm), snowmelt water and groundwater in the different habitats. Four potential water sources for T. taklamakanensis, defined as shallow, middle and deep soil water, as well as groundwater, were investigated using a Bayesian isotope mixing model. It was found that groundwater in the Taklimakan Desert was not completely recharged by precipitation, but through the river runoff from snowmelt water in the nearby mountain ranges. The surface soil water content was quickly depleted by strong evaporation, groundwater depth was relatively shallow and the height of T. taklamakanensis nabkha was relatively low, thus T. taklamakanensis primarily utilized the middle (23%±1%) and deep (31%±5%) soil water and groundwater (36%±2%) within the sandy desert habitat. T. taklamakanensis mainly used the deep soil water (55%±4%) and a small amount of groundwater (25%±2%) within the saline desert-alluvial plain habitat, where the soil water content was relatively high and the groundwater depth was shallow. In contrast, within the desert-oasis ecotone in the Qira and Aral sites, T. taklamakanensis primarily utilized the deep soil water (35%±1% and 38%±2%, respectively) and may also use groundwater because the height of T. taklamakanensis nabkha was relatively high in these habitats and the soil water content was relatively low, which is associated with the reduced groundwater depth due to excessive water resource exploitation and utilization by surrounding cities. Consequently, T. taklamakanensis showed distinct water use strategies among the different habitats and primarily depended on the relatively stable water sources (deep soil water and groundwater), reflecting its adaptations to the different habitats in the arid desert environment. These findings improve our understanding on determining the water sources and water use strategies of T. taklamakanensis in the Taklimakan Desert.

Abstract:Resources in water-limited ecosystems are highly variable and unpredictable, and the maintenance of functional diversity among coexisting species is a crucial ecological strategy through which plants mitigate environmental stress. The comparison of differential eco-physiological responses among co-occurring plants in harsh environments could help provide deep insights into the coexistence mechanisms of competing species. Two coexisting desert shrubs with different photosynthetic pathways ( Haloxylon ammodendron and Tamarix ramosissima ) were selected in the Gurbantunggut Desert located in northwest China. This study detected variations in the water sources, photosynthetic parameters, stem water status, and non-structural carbohydrates of the two shrubs at three sites with different groundwater table depths during the growing seasons of 2015 and 2016 to identify distinct eco-physiological performances in coexisting plants with different functional types under fluctuating water conditions. The water sources of H. ammodendron shifted from soil water to groundwater, while T. ramosissima extracted water mainly from deep soil layers at both sites. Significant reductions in carbon assimilation and stomatal conductance in H. ammodendron with deeper groundwater table depth were detected during most drought periods, but no significant decreases in transpiration rate were detected with declining groundwater table depth. For T. ramosissima , all of these gas exchange parameters decreased with the progression of summer drought, and their relative reduction rates were larger compared with those of H. ammodendron . The stem water status of H. ammodendron deteriorated, and the relative reduction rates of water potential increased with deeper groundwater, whereas those of T. ramosissima did not differ with greater groundwater depth. These findings indicated that prolonged drought would intensify the impact of declining groundwater depth on the eco-physiology of both shrubs, but the extent to which the shrubs would respond differed. The two shrubs were segregated along the water–carbon balance continuum: the C 3 shrub T. ramosissima maximized its carbon fixation at an enormous cost of water, while greater carbon fixation was achieved with far greater water economy for H. ammodendron . These results demonstrated that the two shrubs prioritized carbon gain and water loss differently when faced with limited water sources. These mechanisms might mitigate competitive stress and enable their coexistence.

Abstract:Groundwater is essential for agricultural, ecological and domestic water use, and its depletion under climatic and anthropogenic impacts can impose challenges on regional water resources and ecological security, particularly in arid regions. Spatiotemporal variation and drivers of groundwater are critical to understand groundwater cycling and restore groundwater, while they are poorly understood in arid oasis region due to sparse field monitoring. To address this, we examined the spatiotemporal variations and controlling factors of groundwater level and mineralization degree using data collected at 22 wells in the Wei-Ku Oasis of Tarim Basin during 2000–2018, a typical arid inland river basin in northwest China. Results showed that obviously large spatial and temporal variations existed in both DGL (depth to groundwater level) and DM (degree of mineralization). Groundwater level was the shallowest in spring and deepest in autumn. DGL exhibited a markedly increasing trend (2.05 m per decade), while DM marginally decreased (-0.21 g/L per decade) (p < 0.001) during 2000–2018. The spatial distributions of DGL and DM were complex. Larger variation of DGL/DM generally occurred at the areas with greater DGL/DM. DM in the northwestern part was obviously smaller than that in the southeastern part. The variation of DGL in the eastern region was noticeably larger than that in the western region. Human activity was the main driving factor of DGL increasing, climate change had a dominant role in DM decreasing, and the relationship between controlling factors and groundwater varied in space and season. Decreasing riverbank leakage and increasing volume of evapotranspiration, groundwater pumping and water drainage led to decreasing groundwater level, while increasing infiltration/leakage from irrigated water, canal and reservoir resulted in increasing groundwater level. The results could help to advance the understanding of groundwater cycling mechanism, and be useful in improving sustainable groundwater management and restoring ecosystem in arid region.

Abstract:Restoring degraded ecosystems in drylands is challenging because of low precipitation and high evapotranspiration. Water availability determines the existence and spatiotemporal distribution patterns of key endangered species struggling to survive in the severely damaged desert riparian ecosystem of the lower Tarim River (LTR) in NW China. Ecological water flow restoration measures with high costs and uncertainties have been implemented since 2000. The key task for scientists is to assess the success and drawbacks of this restoration project and propose specific recommendations for stakeholders to optimize the ecological benefits of the project in a cost-effective manner. In this study, Landsat time-series data from 1990 to 2020 were used to extract vegetation index values from river corridors along the LTR and explore the spatiotemporal patterns of desert riparian forest (DRF) vegetation. Based on land use and surface water data, we extracted the interannual spatial distribution range of vegetation and surface water, and selected several sample plots to demonstrate the influence of surface water and groundwater on vegetation change trends. The study results showed the following. 1) From 1990 to 1999, the vegetation slowly degraded; from 2000 to 2012, the extent of vegetation restoration was approximately 1 km from the river; and from 2013 to 2020, the extent of vegetation restoration at the Yingsu and Karday sections increased to 4.5–6.0 km, while that at the Arghan and Yiganbujima sections remained within 1 km from the river. 2) The vegetation growth rate increased substantially and was spatially heterogeneous when the groundwater level reached 4.0–5.0 m and was influenced by surface water divergence; the average vegetation expansion rates per square km for P 1 –P 4 were 0.017 km 2 /a, 0.011 km 2 /a, 0.005 km 2 /a, and 0.002 km 2 /a, respectively. 3) Flooding by surface water was the main driver of vegetation expansion when groundwater was stable and elevations in surface vegetation area were often accompanied by the spreading of surface water. Surface water was significantly correlated with vegetation cover and normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) (Water pixels–Vegetation cover [P 1 : R 2 = 0.57, P < 0.001; P 2 : R 2 = 0.45, P < 0.01]; Water pixels–NDVI [P 1 : R 2 = 0.22, P < 0.05; P 2 : R 2 = 0.40, P < 0.01]). The increase in surface vegetation has alleviated the desertification process in the LTR, and the survival of the poplar has been mitigated. The results of this paper can help decision makers to formulate reasonable ecological water conveyance strategies and realize sustainable management of DRF ecosystems in arid zones.

Abstract:Accurate estimation of desert vegetation transpiration is key to regulating desert water resources of desert ecosystems. Sap flow density (SFD) can indirectly reflect a tree's transpiration consumption, and it has been affected by climate warming and groundwater depths in desert ecosystems. Sap flow responses to meteorological conditions and groundwater depths are further affected by tree of different sizes. However, how meteorological factors and groundwater depths affects tree sap flow among tree sizes remains poorly understand. In this study, a 50 × 50 m P. euphratica stand was selected as a sample plot in the hinterland of the Taklamakan Desert, and the SFD of P. euphratica of different sizes was measured continuously using the thermal diffusion technique from May to October of 2021 and 2022. The results showed that SFD of large P. euphratica was consistently higher than that of small P. euphratica in 2021 and 2022. and the SFD of P. euphratica was significantly and positively correlated with solar radiation (Rad) and vapor pressure deficit (VPD), and the correlation was higher than that of the air temperature (Ta) and relative humidity (RH), and also showed a strong non-linear relationship. Analysis of the hour-by-hour relationship between P. euphratica SFD and VPD and Rad showed a strong hysteresis. Throughout the growing season, there was no significant relationship between SFD of P. euphratica and groundwater depth, VPD and Rad were still the main controlling factors of SFD in different groundwater depths. However, during the period of relative groundwater deficit, the effect of groundwater depth on the SFD of P. euphratica increased, and the small P. euphratica was more sensitive, indicating that the small P. euphratica was more susceptible to groundwater changes. This study emphasized that Rad and VPD were the main drivers of SFD during the growing season, as well as differences in the response of different sizes of P. euphratica to groundwater changes. The results of the study provide a scientific basis for future modeling of transpiration consumption in P. euphratica forests in desert oases, as well as the regulation and allocation of water resources.

Abstract:Water is essential for life. Specifically in the oases of inland arid basins, water is a critically limited resource, essential for the development of the socio-economy and the sustainability of eco-environmental systems. Due to the unique hydrological regime present in arid oases, a moderate groundwater table is the goal of sustainable water management. A shallow water table induces serious secondary salinization and collapse of agriculture, while a deep water table causes deterioration of natural vegetation. From the hydrological perspective, the exchange flux between the unsaturated vadose zone and groundwater reservoir is a critical link to understanding regional water table dynamics. This flux is substantially influenced by anthropogenic activities. In the Tarim River basin of western China, where agriculture consumes over 90% of available water resources, the exchange flux between the unsaturated vadose zone and groundwater reservoir is influenced strongly by irrigation. Recently, mulched drip irrigation, a sophisticated water-saving irrigation method, was widely applied in the Tarim River basin, which greatly impacted the exchange flux and thus the regional groundwater dynamics. Capitalizing on recent progress in evaporation measurement techniques, we can now close the water balance and directly quantify the exchange flux at the field scale, thus gaining a better understanding of regional groundwater dynamics. In this study, comprehensive observations of water balance components in an irrigated cropland were implemented in 2012 and 2013 in a typical oasis within the Tarim River basin. The water balance analysis showed that the exchange flux and groundwater dynamics were significantly altered by the application of water-saving irrigation. The exchange flux at the groundwater table is mostly downward (310.5 mm year(-1)), especially during drip irrigation period and spring flush period, while the upward flux is trivial (16.1 mm year(-1)) due to the moderate groundwater table depth (annual average depth 2.9 m). Traditional secondary salinization caused by intense phreatic evaporation (fed by upward exchange flux) is alleviated. However, a new form of secondary salinization may be introduced unwittingly if there is lack of water for periodic flushing, especially when brackish water is used in the irrigation. Furthermore, the water saved via drip irrigation has been used in further growth of irrigated lands instead of supporting the ecological system. This could lead to an increased risk of eco-environmental degradation and calls for improved governance schemes. The insights gained from this study can be potentially applied to other arid inland areas (e.g., central Asia) which face similar water shortages and human development problems.
Drought Resistance of Desert Riparian Forests: Vegetation Growth Index and Leaf Physiological Index Approach

Abstract:The Hotan River, the sole river traversing the Taklimakan Desert in northwest China, sustains a critical desert riparian ecosystem dominated by Populus euphratica. This riparian habitat is integral to biodiversity maintenance. However, global climate change and anthropogenic disturbances have profoundly impacted the Taklimakan desert landscape, leading to fragmentation and reduced environmental heterogeneity. Consequently, there has been a notable decline in P. euphratica populations. This study aimed to assess the physiological resilience of P. euphratica under harsh conditions and analyze the vegetation distribution patterns along the desert riparian zone. Laboratory tests were employed to determine the physiological indexes including Relative Water Content (RWC), Chlorophyll (Chl), Soluble Sugar (SS), Free Proline (Pro), and Peroxidase Activity (POD) of P. euphratica, providing insights into its capacity to endure challenging environmental conditions. Quadrat surveys were conducted at varying distances from the riverbed to examine vegetation distribution patterns. Plant growth indexes were analyzed to unveil the resistance of the desert riparian forest to drought. The study identified 45 shrubs and herbs belonging to 17 families in the Hotan River understory, with P. euphratica exhibiting the highest abundance. In river flats, annual herbs dominated due to favorable water conditions, while shrub grasslands displayed a relatively complete community structure with trees, crowns, and grasses. As the distance increased from the river channel, more perennial herb and shrub species prevailed, leading to a decline in overall species richness as annual herbs diminished. Physiological assessments revealed that P. euphratica in a medium growth grade (VS3) exhibited the highest physiological indexes, indicating its adaptability to environmental changes. The findings underscore the significance of water conditions in the growth and development of vegetation in desert riparian forests, particularly highlighted by the physiological indexes of P. euphratica. This research contributes valuable insights that can inform the preservation and restoration of desert riparian forests, providing a scientific basis and technical guidance for conservation efforts.

Abstract:Plant functional traits reflect the capacity of plants to adapt to their environment and the underlying optimization mechanisms. However, few studies have investigated trade-off strategies for functional traits in desert-wetland ecosystems, the mechanisms by which surface water disturbance and groundwater depth drive functional trait variation at the community scale, and the roles of intraspecific and interspecific variation. Therefore, this study analyzed specific differences in community-weighted mean traits among habitat types and obtained the relative contribution of intraspecific and interspecific variation by decomposing community-weighted mean traits, focusing on the Daliyabuyi Oasis in the hinterland of the Taklamakan Desert. We also explored the mechanisms by which surface water and groundwater influence different sources of variability specifically. The results showed that plant height, relative chlorophyll content, leaf thickness, leaf nitrogen content, and nitrogen-phosphorus ratio were the key traits reflecting habitat differences. As the groundwater depth becomes shallower and surface water disturbance intensifies, plant communities tend to have higher leaf nitrogen content, nitrogen-phosphorus ratio, and relative chlorophyll content and lower height. Surface water, groundwater, soil water content, and total soil nitrogen can influence interspecific and intraspecific variation in these traits through direct and indirect effects. As arid to wet habitats change, plant trade-off strategies for resources will shift from conservative to acquisitive. The study concluded that community functional traits are mainly contributed by interspecific variation, but consideration of intraspecific variation and the covariation effects that exist between it and interspecific variation can help to further enhance the understanding of the response of community traits in desert-wetland ecosystems to environmental change. Surface water disturbance has a non-negligible contribution to this adaptation process and plays a higher role than groundwater depth.

Abstract:Groundwater is an important ecological water source in arid areas. Groundwater depth (GWD) is an important indicator that affects vegetation growth and soil salinization. Clarifying the coupling relationship between vegetation, groundwater, and soil in arid areas is beneficial to the prevention of environmental problems such as desertification and salinization. Existing studies lack research on the water–soil–vegetation relationship in typical areas, especially in shallow groundwater areas. In this study, the shallow groundwater area in Minqin, northwest China, was taken as study area, and vegetation surveys and soil samples collection were conducted. The relationships between vegetation fractional coverage (VFC) and GWD, soil salinity, soil moisture, and precipitation were comprehensively analyzed. The results showed low soil salinity in the riparian zone and high soil salinity in other shallow-buried areas with salinization problems. Soil salinity was negatively correlated with VFC (R = −0.4). When soil salinity >3 g/kg, VFC was less than 20%. Meanwhile, when GWD >10 m, VFC was usually less than 15%. In the areas with soil salinity <3 g/kg, when GWD was in the range of 4–10 m, VFC was positively correlated with soil moisture content (R = 0.99), and vegetation growth mainly depended on surface soil water, which was significantly affected by precipitation. When GWD was less than 4 m, VFC was negatively correlated with GWD (R = −0.78), and vegetation growth mainly relied on groundwater and soil water. There are obvious ecological differences in the shallow-buried areas in Minqin. Hence, it is reasonable to consider zoning and grading policies for ecological protection.

Abstract:Desert wetland is a special ecological environment as water is fundamental to maintaining existence. The soil water of sandy wetland links surficial water and groundwater. This study Takes Habahu National Wetland Nature Reserve as the research area and the water movement characteristics of soil profile as the research purpose. According to the altitude and topographic characteristics, the main focus is monitoring soil moisture in different layers at specific sites. The results show that: (1) In the core area of sandy wetland, the water movement of the soil profile is slow with lower infiltration and evaporation; (2) On the slopes around the wetland, the surface water is recharged by rapid leakage along with the underlying impermeable layer after precipitation due to the sand coverage; (3) In the desert hinterland outside the wetland, the water rapidly infiltrates after precipitation and flows into different groundwater systems along the structural characteristics of the underlying stratum to supplement the nearby wetlands. Based on these characteristics, we put forward the unique viewpoints of environmental protection in sandy wetlands: (1) focus on the protection of surface organisms in the core area of sandy wetland to reduce evaporation and improvethe soil water-holding capacity; (2) Appropriate engineering and biological measures should be applied to the slope outside the core area to reduce surface evaporation and plant transpiration and improve the soil moisture; (3) In the periphery area of the wetland, infiltration should be promoted to ensure the source of water supply to wetlands, which would maintain the existence of wetlands and give full play to their ecological functions. In addition, this study analyzed the relationship between soil moisture and plant diversity of 35 species. 16 plants are considered to be suitable for planting in core area of sandy wetland and 9 plants for planting in the desert hinterland outside the wetland.

Abstract:Surface water is an important factor affecting vegetation change in desert areas. However, little research has been conducted on the effects of surface water on vegetation expansion. In this study, the annual spatial distribution range of vegetation and surface water in the Daliyabuyi Oasis from 1990 to 2020 was extracted using Landsat time-series images. Based on multi-temporal and multi-scale remote sensing images, several plots were selected to demonstrate the process of landform change and vegetation expansion, and the influence of surface water on vegetation expansion was analyzed. The results show that the vegetation distribution and surface water coverage have increased from 1990 to 2020; and surface water is a critical factor that drives the expansion of vegetation. On the one hand, surface water in the study area was essential for reshaping the riparian landform, driving the transformation of dunes into floodplains, and increasing the potential colonization sites for vegetation. However, landform changes ultimately changed the redistribution of surface water, ensuring that enough water and nutrients provided by sediment were available for plant growth. Our study provides a critical reference for the restoration of desert vegetation and the sustainable development of oases.

The Impact of Groundwater Burial Depth on the Vegetation of the Dariyabui Oasis in the Central Desert

Abstract:Vegetation and groundwater are important components of the ecological environment of oases in desert hinterlands and their relationship is crucial to ecosystem stability. In this study, Sentinel-2 data for 2016–2022 and measured groundwater burial depths were analysed for the Dariyabui Oasis in the hinterland of the Taklamakan Desert. The spatial and temporal changes in vegetation and groundwater burial depth from 2019 to 2022 were analysed based on the image–element dichotomous model of the normalised difference vegetation index, utilising the inverse distance weight interpolation method, cubic curve regression, image–element difference, slope trend analysis, and the Markov transfer matrix for determining the temporal and spatial response law between the two. Finally, the threshold value of groundwater burial depth for different vegetation cover types was clarified. The fractional vegetation cover of the Dariyabui Oasis showed a slight increase from 2016 to 2022. Vegetation in the northwest and southeast of the oasis increased, whereas vegetation decreased in the mid-north and northeast regions; 5.14% of the total area experienced increased coverage, whereas 3.35% experienced decreased coverage. The depth of groundwater in the oasis showed a pattern of gradual increase from the entrance to the end of the oasis, that is, south to north. The depth of groundwater in the oasis from 2019 to 2022 was stable, with a 4-year average depth of 4.1069 m and a maximum fluctuation of 0.4560 m. The interannual changes in the groundwater level showed an increasing trend in January–April, while groundwater levels showed a decreasing trend in May–July and August–October and remained constant in June–July and October–December. Oasis vegetation cover showed a negative correlation with groundwater depth, with a depth interval for the highest low-cover vegetation distribution of 3–6 m, and an ultimate depth threshold of 7 m. The depth interval with the highest medium-cover vegetation distribution was 3–4 m, that with the highest high-cover distribution was 2–4 m, and the ultimate depth threshold was 6 m. The depth of the oasis ranged from 3 to 6 m and the ultimate depth threshold was 7 m.

Xylem hydraulic conductivity and embolism in riparian plants and their responses to drought stress in desert of Northwest China

Abstract:Riparian plants in the lower reaches of the Tarim River (Tikanlik) and Heihe River (Ulan Tug) were selected as study objects, where they suffered from different drought stresses. The differences of root and twig xylem hydraulic conductivity and embolism of the typical riparian plants, including Populus euphratica, Tamarix spp., Alhagi sparsifolia and Karelinia caspica, and their responses to drought stress were analysed. The results showed that (1) the riparian plants in the lower Tarim River suffered from more severe drought stress than those in the lower Heihe River because of their lower xylem hydraulic conductivity, and the fundamental reason resulted in different degrees of drought stresses in the two regions was groundwater depth; (2) the drought resistance of Tamarix spp. was the strongest, which could exist in a broad habitat with different degrees of water stresses, whereas A.sparsifolia and K. caspica only exist in a narrow habitat with groundwater depth less than 4 m because of their weak drought resistance; and (3) the main resistance part of water transportation of riparian plants was twig xylem when they encountered the mild drought stress, whereas it was root xylem when the riparian plants encountered severe drought stress, and riparian plants adapted the mild drought stress through limiting twig xylem hydraulic conductivity to coordinate the plant growth, while they adapted the severe drought stress through enhancing xylem hydraulic conductivity of dominant branches with strong competitiveness of sap flow and sacrificing non‐dominant branches to improve the plant survival chance. Abstract:Information regarding plant water-use strategies is essential for understanding the hydrological processes and plant survival adaptation mechanisms in desert lake basin regions. To examine the water use strategies of plants in desert lake basin areas, water uptake patterns, water use efficiency, and water potential of Nitraria tangutorum were investigated at different distances from the lake duringhe growing seasons in the lake basin regions of the Badain Jaran Desert. The results indicate that N. tangutorum primarily absorbed groundwater in May (63.8%) and August (53.5%), relied on deep soil water in June (75.1%), and uniformly absorbed soil water from different layers in July. These observations could be explained by periodic fluctuations in the groundwater level and the consequent decrease in soil water availability, as well as plant root adjustments. As soil water availability decreases, N. tangutorum adapts to water variation by increasing its water use efficiency (WUE) and reducing its leaf water potential ( Ψ ). With intensified water stress, N. tangutorum gradually shifted from adventurous anisohydric regulation to conservative isohydric regulation. Thus, N. tangutorum responds to diverse degrees of environmental changes by altering its water-use strategy. A better understanding of the adaptive water use strategies developed by desert plants under varying water availability conditions provides insight into the diversity of species' reactions to long-term drought and quantifies the hydrological cycle of desert ecosystems against the background of worldwide climate warming.
