Abstract:Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) tears are prevalent knee injures, particularly among active individuals. Accurate and timely diagnosis is essential for determining the optimal treatment strategy and assessing patient prognosis. Various previous studies have demonstrated the successful application of deep learning techniques in the field of medical image analysis. This study aimed to develop a deep learning model for detecting ACL tears in knee magnetic resonance Imaging (MRI) to enhance diagnostic accuracy and efficiency. The proposed model consists of three main modules: a Dual-Scale Data Augmentation module (DDA) to enrich the training data on both the spatial and layer scales; a selective group attention module (SG) to capture relationships across the layer, channel, and space scales; and a fusion module to explore the inter-relationships among various perspectives to achieve the final classification. To ensure a fair comparison, the study utilized a public dataset from MRNet, comprising knee MRI scans from 1250 exams, with a focus on three distinct views: axial, coronal, and sagittal. The experimental results demonstrate the superior performance of the proposed model, termed SGNET, in ACL tear detection compared with other comparison models, achieving an accuracy of 0.9250, a sensitivity of 0.9259, a specificity of 0.9242, and an AUC of 0.9747.
A Deep Learning Model Enhances Clinicians' Diagnostic Accuracy to More Than 96% for Anterior Cruciate Ligament Ruptures on Magnetic Resonance Imaging.

RESULTS:A deep learning model was developed based on the training dataset of 22,767 MRIs from 5 centers and verified with external validation dataset of 4,086 MRIs from 6 centers. The model achieved an area under the receiver operating characteristic curve of 0.987 and a sensitivity and specificity of 95.1%. Thirty-eight clinicians from 25 centers were recruited to diagnose 3,800 MRIs. The AI assistance significantly improved the accuracy of all clinicians, exceeding 96%. Additionally, a notable reduction in diagnostic time was observed. The most significant improvements in accuracy and time efficiency were observed in the trainee groups, suggesting that AI support is particularly beneficial for clinicians with moderately limited diagnostic expertise. CONCLUSIONS:This deep learning model demonstrated expert-level diagnostic performance for ACL ruptures, serving as a valuable tool to assist clinicians of various specialties and experience levels in making accurate and efficient diagnoses. Deep Learning Approach for Anterior Cruciate Ligament Lesion Detection: Evaluation of Diagnostic Performance Using Arthroscopy as the Reference Standard

Abstract:Background: MRI is the most commonly used imaging method for diagnosing anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries. However, the interpretation of knee MRI is time-intensive and depends on the clinical experience of the reader. An automated detection system based on a deep-learning algorithm may improve interpretation time and reliability. Purpose: To determine the feasibility of using a deep learning approach to detect ACL injuries within the knee joint on MRI. Study type: Retrospective. Population: In all, 163 subjects with an ACL tear and 245 subjects with an intact ACL. There were 285, 81, and 42 volumes for training, validation, and test sets, respectively. Field strength/sequence: 2D sagittal proton density-weighted spectral attenuated inversion recovery sequences at 1.5T and 3.0T. Assessment: Based on the architecture of 3D DenseNet, we constructed a classification convolutional neural network. We tested this deep learning approach with different inputs and two other algorithms, including VGG16 and ResNet. Then we had both inexperienced radiologists and senior radiologists read the MR images. Statistical tests: Using arthroscopic results as the reference standard, the performance of three different inputs and three different algorithms, the residents and senior radiologists assessed the classification accuracy, sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value (PPV), negative predictive value (NPV), and area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC). Results: The accuracy, sensitivity, specificity, PPV, and NPV of our customized 3D deep learning architecture was 0.957, 0.976, 0.944, 0.940, and 0.976, respectively. The average AUCs were 0.946, 0.859, 0.960 for ResNet, VGG16, and our proposed network, respectively. The diagnostic accuracy of our model, residents, and senior radiologists was 0.957, 0.814, and 0.899, respectively. Deep Learning-Based Image Feature with Arthroscopy-Aided Early Diagnosis and Treatment of Meniscus Injury of Knee Joint

Abstract:The aim of this study is to explore the clinical effect of deep learning-based MRI-assisted arthroscopy in the early treatment of knee meniscus sports injury. Based on convolutional neural network algorithm, Adam algorithm was introduced to optimize it, and the magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) image super-resolution reconstruction model (SRCNN) was established. Peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR) and structural similarity (SSIM) were compared between SRCNN and other algorithms. Sixty patients with meniscus injury of knee joint were studied. Arthroscopic surgery was performed according to the patients' actual type of injury, and knee scores were evaluated for all patients. Then, postoperative scores and MRI results were analyzed. The results showed that the PSNR and SSIM values of the SRCNN algorithm were (42.19 ± 4.37) dB and 0.9951, respectively, which were significantly higher than those of other algorithms (P < 0.05). Among patients with meniscus injury, 17 cases (28.33%) were treated with meniscus suture, 39 cases (65.00%) underwent secondary resection, 3 cases (5.00%) underwent partial resection, and 1 case (1.67%) underwent full resection. After meniscus suture, secondary resection, partial resection, and total resection, the knee function scores of patients after treatment were (83.17 ± 8.63), (80.06 ± 7.96), (84.34 ± 7.74), and (85.52 ± 5.97), respectively. There was no great difference in knee function scores after different methods of treatment (P > 0.05), and there were considerable differences compared with those before treatment (P < 0.01). Compared with the results of arthroscopy, there was no significant difference in the grading of meniscus injury by MRI (P > 0.05). To sum up, the SRCNN algorithm based on the deep convolutional network algorithm improved the MRI image quality and the diagnosis of knee meniscus injuries. Arthroscopic knee surgery had good results and had great clinical application and promotion value.
Identification and diagnosis of meniscus tear by magnetic resonance imaging using a deep learning model

Abstract:ObjectiveMeniscus tear is a common problem in sports trauma, and its imaging diagnosis mainly relies on MRI. To improve the diagnostic accuracy and efficiency, a deep learning model was employed in this study and the identification efficiency was evaluated.MethodsStandard knee MRI images from 924 individual patients were used to complete the training, validation and testing processes. Mask regional convolutional neural network (R–CNN) was used to build the deep learning network structure, and ResNet50 was adopted to develop the backbone network. The deep learning model was trained and validated with a dataset containing 504 and 220 patients, respectively. Internal testing was performed based on a dataset of 200 patients, and 180 patients from 8 hospitals were regarded as an external dataset for model validation. Additionally, 40 patients who were diagnosed by the arthroscopic surgery were enrolled as the final test dataset.ResultsAfter training and validation, the deep learning model effectively recognized healthy and injured menisci. Average precision for the three types of menisci (healthy, torn and degenerated menisci) ranged from 68% to 80%. Diagnostic accuracy for healthy, torn and degenerated menisci was 87.50%, 86.96%, and 84.78%, respectively. Validation results from external dataset demonstrated that the accuracy of diagnosing torn and intact meniscus tear through 3.0T MRI images was higher than 80%, while the accuracy verified by arthroscopic surgery was 87.50%.ConclusionMask R–CNN effectively identified and diagnosed meniscal injuries, especially for tears that occurred in different parts of the meniscus. The recognition ability was admirable, and the diagnostic accuracy could be further improved with increased training sample size. Therefore, this deep learning model showed great potential in diagnosing meniscus injuries.Translational potential of this articleDeep learning model exerted unique effect in terms of reducing doctors’ workload and improving diagnostic accuracy. Injured and healthy menisci could be more accurately identified and classified based on training and learning datasets. This model could also distinguish torn from degenerated menisci, making it an effective tool for MRI-assisted diagnosis of meniscus injuries in clinical practice.

Abstract:This study aimed to explore the application value of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) images based on deep learning algorithms in the diagnosis of tibial plateau fractures combined with meniscus injuries. The original MRI image was input into the deep learning convolutional neural network (CNN), and the knee joint undersampled and fully sampled MRI image data were used for training to obtain a neural network model that can effectively remove the noise and blur of the undersampled image. Then, the image was reconstructed by the Regridding model to obtain an image with less noise and clearer structure. At the same time, all subjects underwent knee MRI examinations, and algorithms were used to analyze the sensitivity, specificity, and accuracy of their images. It was found that of 160 menisci from 80 cases of tibial plateau fractures, 64 were normal meniscus and 88 were injured menisci. The sensitivity, specificity, and accuracy of optimized MRI in diagnosing fracture of tibial plateau combined with meniscus injury were 96.9%, 93.2%, and 95.3%, respectively. In conclusion, the restored MRI images have high sensitivity in the diagnosis of meniscus injury and high consistency with the intraoperative results. It suggests that the optimized MRI image is effective in the diagnosis of meniscus injury.

Deep Learning Approach for MRI in the Classification of Anterior Talofibular Ligament Injuries

Abstract:Background: Diagnosing anterior talofibular ligament (ATFL) injuries differs among radiologists. Further assessment of ATFL tears is valuable for clinical decision-making. Purpose: To establish a deep learning method for classifying ATFL injuries based on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Study type: Retrospective. Population: One thousand seventy-three patients from a single center with ankle MRI within 1 month of reference standard arthroscopy (in-group dataset), were divided into training, validation, and test sets in a ratio of 8:1:1. Additionally, 167 patients from another center were used as an independent out-group dataset. Field strength/sequence: Fat-saturation proton density-weighted fast spin-echo sequence at 1.5/3.0 T. Assessment: Patients were divided into normal, strain and degeneration, partial tear and complete tear groups (groups 0-3). The complete tear group was divided into five sub-groups by location and the potential avulsion fracture (groups 3.1-3.5). All images were input into AlexNet, VGG11, Small-Sample-Attention Net (SSA-Net), and SSA-Net + Weight Loss for classification. The results were compared with four radiologists with 5-30 years of experience. Statistical tests: Model performance was evaluated by the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve, the area under the ROC curve (AUC), and so on. McNemar's test was used to compare performance among the different models, and between the radiologists and models. The intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) was used to assess the reliability of the radiologists. P < 0.05 was considered statistically significant. Results: The average AUC of AlexNet, VGG11, SAA-Net, and SSA-Net + Weight Loss was 0.95, 0.99, 0.99, 0.99 in groups 0-3 and 0.96, 0.99, 0.99, 0.99 in groups 3.1-3.5. The effect of SSA-Net + Weight Loss was similar to SSA-Net but better than AlexNet and VGG11. In the out-group test set, the AUC of SSA-Net + Weight Loss ranged from 0.89 to 0.99. The ICC of radiologists was 0.97-1.00. The effect of SSA-Net + Weight Loss was better than each radiologist in the in-group and out-group test sets. Data conclusion: Deep learning has potential to be used for classifying ATFL injuries. SSA-Net + Weight Loss has a better diagnostic effect than radiologists with different experience levels. Abstract:Li, Jiebing ; This study focused on the use of MRI imaging techniques and artificial ligaments in diagnosing and reconstructing Cruciate Ligament (CL) injuries of the knee joint. CL injuries are common in athletes and can cause significant pain and disability. MRI imaging is a powerful diagnostic tool that accurately identifies the extent and location of the injury. The use of Artificial ligaments has been increasing in the surgical reconstruction of the ligament. In this study, we offer a deep learning (DL)-a based method called ThreeFold CNN for arthroscopically detecting injuries to the CL in the knee during MRI. The CL on MRI was first separated using two deep convolutional neural networks (2DCNNs). Then structural problems within the isolated ligament were detected using a classification CNN to create a completely automated DL-based diagnostic method. We employ the Satin Bowerbird Optimizer (SBO) method for accelerating the performance of the model. The CL injury diagnosis system's specificity and sensitivity are 97 and 97, respectively, at the optimum threshold. In contrast, the clinical radiologists' specificity varied between 0.91 and 0.99, while their sensitivity was between 0.97 and 0.99. The diagnostic performance of the CL injury diagnosis system and CR did not differ in a statistically significant manner atP<.05. The CL injury diagnosis system's area under the ROC curve was 98.5, which indicates outstanding overall diagnostic accuracy.

Abstract:Background The diagnosis of labral injury on MRI is time-consuming and potential for incorrect diagnoses. Purpose To explore the feasibility of applying deep learning to diagnose and classify labral injuries with MRI. Study Type Retrospective. Population A total of 1016 patients were divided into normal (n = 168, class 0) and abnormal labrum (n = 848) groups. The abnormal group consisted of n = 111 with class 1 (degeneration), n = 437 with class 2 (partial or complete tear), and n = 300 with unclassified injury. Patients were randomly divided into training, validation, and test cohort according to the ratio of 55%:15%:30%. Field Strength/Sequence Fat-saturation proton density-weighted fast spin-echo sequence at 3.0 T. Assessment Convolutional neural network-6 (CNN-6) was used to extract, discriminate, and detect oblique coronal (OCOR) and oblique sagittal (OSAG) images. Mask R-CNN was used for segmentation. LeNet-5 was used to diagnose and classify labral injuries. The weighting method combined the models of OCOR and OSAG. The output-input connection was used to correlate the whole diagnosis/classification system. Four radiologists performed subjective diagnoses to obtain the diagnosis results. Statistical Tests CNN-6 and LeNet-5 were evaluated by area under the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve and related parameters. The mean average precision (MAP) evaluated the Mask R-CNN. McNemar's test was used to compare the radiologists and models. A P value < 0.05 was considered statistically significant. Results The area under the curve (AUC) of CNN-6 was 0.99 for extraction, discrimination, and detection. MAP values of Mask R-CNN for OCOR and OSAG image segmentation were 0.96 and 0.99. The accuracies of LeNet-5 in the diagnosis and classification were 0.94/0.94 (OCOR) and 0.92/0.91 (OSAG), respectively. The accuracy of the weighted models in the diagnosis and classification were 0.94 and 0.97, respectively. The accuracies of radiologists in the diagnosis and classification of labrum injuries ranged from 0.85 to 0.92 and 0.78 to 0.94, respectively. Abstract:The anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) is a major ligament in the knee that helps to stabilize the joint and prevent excessive forward movement of the shinbone. An ACL tear is a common injury, especially among athletes who participate in sports that involve pivoting and sudden changes in direction. This paper proposes an ensemble model, which includes three deep learning models (EfficientNet-B7, ResNet-152V2, and DenseNet-201) and a genetic algorithm, to detect and classify ACL tears using knee magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). The ensemble model was trained on the KneeMRI dataset, which comprises labeled MRI images. The deep learning models can learn to identify subtle changes in ligament structure and signal intensity that are associated with ACL tears and the genetic algorithm is used to find the optimal prediction. The proposed ensemble model was evaluated using the KneeMRI dataset. The dataset was preprocessed using data augmentation techniques. Then, the ensemble model was applied to the KneeMRI dataset, evaluated, and compared with previous models. The accuracy, recall, precision, specificity, and F1 score of our proposed ensemble model were 99.68%, 98.73%, 99.52%, 99.62%, and 98.94%, respectively. Thus, our ensemble model has an unrivaled perceptive outcome and could be used to accurately identify and classify ACL tears, improving patient outcome.

Approaching expert-level accuracy for differentiating ACL tear types on MRI with deep learning

Abstract:Treatment for anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) tears depends on the condition of the ligament. We aimed to identify different tear statuses from preoperative MRI using deep learning-based radiomics with sex and age. We reviewed 862 patients with preoperative MRI scans reflecting ACL status from Hunan Provincial People's Hospital. Based on sagittal proton density-weighted images, a fully automated approach was developed that consisted of a deep learning model for segmenting ACL tissue (ACL-DNet) and a deep learning-based recognizer for ligament status classification (ACL-SNet). The efficacy of the proposed approach was evaluated by using the sensitivity, specificity and area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC) and compared with that of a group of three orthopedists in the holdout test set. The ACL-DNet model yielded a Dice coefficient of 98% ± 6% on the MRI datasets. Our proposed classification model yielded a sensitivity of 97% and a specificity of 97%. In comparison, the sensitivity of alternative models ranged from 84 to 90%, while the specificity was between 86 and 92%. The AUC of the ACL-SNet model was 99%, demonstrating high overall diagnostic accuracy. The diagnostic performance of the clinical experts as reflected in the AUC was 96%, 92% and 88%, respectively. The fully automated model shows potential as a highly reliable and reproducible tool that allows orthopedists to noninvasively identify the ACL status and may aid in optimizing different techniques, such as ACL remnant preservation, for ACL reconstruction.

Abstract:Objective: To build a three-dimensional (3D) deep learning-based computer-aided diagnosis (CAD) system and investigate its applicability for automatic detection of anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) of the knee joint in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Methods: In this study, we develop a 3D weighted multi-view convolutional neural network by fusing different views of MRI to detect ACL. The network is evaluated on two MRI datasets, the in-house MRI-ACL dataset and the publicly available MRNet-v1.0 dataset. In the MRI-ACL dataset, the retrospective study collects 100 cases, and four views per patient are included. There are 50 ACL patients and 50 normal patients, respectively. The MRNet-v1.0 dataset contains 1,250 cases with three views, of which 208 are ACL patients, and the rest are normal or other abnormal patients. Results: The area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC) of the ACL diagnosis system is 97.00% and 92.86% at the optimal threshold for the MRI-ACL dataset and the MRNet-v1.0 dataset, respectively, indicating a high overall diagnostic accuracy. In comparison, the best AUC of the single-view diagnosis methods are 96.00% (MRI-ACL dataset) and 91.78% (MRNet-v1.0 dataset), and our method improves by about 1.00% and 1.08%. Furthermore, our method also improves by about 1.00% (MRI-ACL dataset) and 0.28% (MRNet-v1.0 dataset) compared with the multi-view network (i.e., MRNet). Conclusion: The presented 3D weighted multi-view network achieves superior AUC in diagnosing ACL, not only in the in-house MRI-ACL dataset but also in the publicly available MRNet-v1.0 dataset, which demonstrates its clinical applicability for the automatic detection of ACL.

A Comprehensive Evaluation of Deep Learning Models on Knee MRIs for the Diagnosis and Classification of Meniscal Tears: A Systematic Review

Abstract:Objectives: This study delves into the cutting-edge field of deep learning techniques, particularly deep convolutional neural networks (DCNNs), which have demonstrated unprecedented potential in assisting radiologists and orthopedic surgeons in precisely identifying meniscal tears. This research aims to evaluate the effectiveness of deep learning models in recognizing, localizing, describing, and categorizing meniscal tears in magnetic resonance images (MRIs). Materials and methods: This systematic review was rigorously conducted, strictly following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines. Extensive searches were conducted on MEDLINE (PubMed), Web of Science, Cochrane Library, and Google Scholar. All identified articles underwent a comprehensive risk of bias analysis. Predictive performance values were either extracted or calculated for quantitative analysis, including sensitivity and specificity. The meta-analysis was performed for all prediction models that identified the presence and location of meniscus tears. Results: This study's findings underscore that a range of deep learning models exhibit robust performance in detecting and classifying meniscal tears, in one case surpassing the expertise of musculoskeletal radiologists. Most studies in this review concentrated on identifying tears in the medial or lateral meniscus and even precisely locating tears—whether in the anterior or posterior horn—with exceptional accuracy, as demonstrated by AUC values ranging from 0.83 to 0.94. Conclusions: Based on these findings, deep learning models have showcased significant potential in analyzing knee MR images by learning intricate details within images. They offer precise outcomes across diverse tasks, including segmenting specific anatomical structures and identifying pathological regions. Contributions: This study focused exclusively on DL models for identifying and localizing meniscus tears. It presents a meta-analysis that includes eight studies for detecting the presence of a torn meniscus and a meta-analysis of three studies with low heterogeneity that localize and classify the menisci. Another novelty is the analysis of arthroscopic surgery as ground truth. The quality of the studies was assessed against the CLAIM checklist, and the risk of bias was determined using the QUADAS-2 tool.

Deep learning-assisted classification of calcaneofibular ligament injuries in the ankle joint

Abstract:Background: The classification of calcaneofibular ligament (CFL) injuries on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is time-consuming and subject to substantial interreader variability. This study explores the feasibility of classifying CFL injuries using deep learning methods by comparing them with the classifications of musculoskeletal (MSK) radiologists and further examines image cropping screening and calibration methods. Methods: The imaging data of 1,074 patients who underwent ankle arthroscopy and MRI examinations in our hospital were retrospectively analyzed. According to the arthroscopic findings, patients were divided into normal (class 0, n=475); degeneration, strain, and partial tear (class 1, n=217); and complete tear (class 2, n=382) groups. All patients were divided into training, validation, and test sets at a ratio of 8:1:1. After preprocessing, the images were cropped using Mask region-based convolutional neural network (R-CNN), followed by the application of an attention algorithm for image screening and calibration and the implementation of LeNet-5 for CFL injury classification. The diagnostic effects of the axial, coronal, and combined models were compared, and the best method was selected for outgroup validation. The diagnostic results of the models in the intragroup and outgroup test sets were compared with those results of 4 MSK radiologists of different seniorities. Results: The mean average precision (mAP) of the Mask R-CNN using the attention algorithm for the left and right image cropping of axial and coronal sequences was 0.90-0.96. The accuracy of LeNet-5 for classifying classes 0-2 was 0.92, 0.93, and 0.92, respectively, for the axial sequences and 0.89, 0.92, and 0.90, respectively, for the coronal sequences. After sequence combination, the classification accuracy for classes 0-2 was 0.95, 0.97, and 0.96, respectively. The mean accuracies of the 4 MSK radiologists in classifying the intragroup test set as classes 0-2 were 0.94, 0.91, 0.86, and 0.85, all of which were significantly different from the model. The mean accuracies of the MSK radiologists in classifying the outgroup test set as classes 0-2 were 0.92, 0.91, 0.87, and 0.85, with the 2 senior MSK radiologists demonstrating similar diagnostic performance to the model and the junior MSK radiologists demonstrating worse accuracy. Conclusions: Deep learning can be used to classify CFL injuries at similar levels to those of MSK radiologists. Adding an attention algorithm after cropping is helpful for accurately cropping CFL images.
Improved Diagnosis of Tibiofemoral Cartilage Defects on MRI Images Using Deep Learning

Abstract:Background: MRI is the modality of choice for cartilage imaging; however, its diagnostic performance is variable and significantly lower than the gold standard diagnostic knee arthroscopy. In recent years, deep learning has been used to automatically interpret medical images to improve diagnostic accuracy and speed. Purpose: The primary purpose of this study was to evaluate whether deep learning applied to the interpretation of knee MRI images can be utilized to identify cartilage defects accurately. Methods: We analyzed data from patients who underwent knee MRI evaluation and consequently had arthroscopic knee surgery (207 with cartilage defect, 90 without cartilage defect). Patients' arthroscopic findings were compared to preoperative MRI images to verify the presence or absence of isolated tibiofemoral cartilage defects. We developed three convolutional neural networks (CNNs) to analyze the MRI images and implemented image-specific saliency maps to visualize the CNNs' decision-making process. To compare the CNNs' performance against human interpretation, the same test dataset images were provided to an experienced orthopaedic surgeon and an orthopaedic resident. Results: Saliency maps demonstrated that the CNNs learned to focus on the clinically relevant areas of the tibiofemoral articular cartilage on MRI images during the decision-making processes. One CNN achieved higher performance than the orthopaedic surgeon, with two more accurate diagnoses made by the CNN. All the CNNs outperformed the orthopaedic resident. Conclusion: CNN can be used to enhance the diagnostic performance of MRI in identifying isolated tibiofemoral cartilage defects and may replace diagnostic knee arthroscopy in certain cases in the future.

Abstract:BK virus (BKV) is a polyomavirus that establishes a lifelong persistence in most humans and is a major impediment to success of kidney grafts. The function of the innate immune system in BKV infection and pathology has not been investigated. Here we examine the role of antimicrobial defensins in BKV infection of Vero cells. Our data show that α-defensin human neutrophil protein 1 (HNP1) and human α-defensin 5 (HD5) inhibit BKV infection by targeting an early event in the viral lifecycle. HD5 treatment of BKV reduced viral attachment to cells, whereas cellular treatment with HD5 did not. Colocalization studies indicated that HD5 interacts directly with BKV. Ultrastructural analysis revealed HD5-induced aggregation of virions. HD5 also inhibited infection of cells by other related polyomaviruses. This is the first study to demonstrate polyomavirus sensitivity to defensins. We also show a novel mechanism whereby HD5 binds to BKV leading to aggregation of virion particles preventing normal virus binding to the cell surface and uptake into cells.
Computer-Aided Ankle Ligament Injury Diagnosis from Magnetic Resonance Images Using Machine Learning Techniques

Abstract:Ankle injuries caused by the Anterior Talofibular Ligament (ATFL) are the most common type of injury. Thus, finding new ways to analyze these injuries through novel technologies is critical for assisting medical diagnosis and, as a result, reducing the subjectivity of this process. As a result, the purpose of this study is to compare the ability of specialists to diagnose lateral tibial tuberosity advancement (LTTA) injury using computer vision analysis on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). The experiments were carried out on a database obtained from the Vue PACS–Carestream software, which contained 132 images of ATFL and normal (healthy) ankles. Because there were only a few images, image augmentation techniques was used to increase the number of images in the database. Following that, various feature extraction algorithms (GLCM, LBP, and HU invariant moments) and classifiers such as Multi-Layer Perceptron (MLP), Support Vector Machine (SVM), k-Nearest Neighbors (kNN), and Random Forest (RF) were used. Based on the results from this analysis, for cases that lack clear morphologies, the method delivers a hit rate of 85.03% with an increase of 22% over the human expert-based analysis.

Abstract:This study was to evaluate the performance of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) reconstruction algorithm based on convolutional neural network (CNN) in the diagnosis of ankle injury of football player. An MRI image reconstruction algorithm based on CNN (CNN-MRI) was constructed, and it was compared with the generalized autocalibrating partially parallel acquisitions (GRAPPA), iterative self-consistent parallel imaging reconstruction from arbitrary k-space (SPIRiT), and simultaneous autocalibrating and k-space estimation (SAKE) in MRI image of patients with ankle injury. They were compared regarding MRI image reconstruction quality (image score, peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR), structural similarity (SSIM), root mean square error (RMSE), and running time) and the assessment accuracy for each lesion. The detection rate of ankle joint injury and evaluation accuracy of the bone contusion, ligament injury, tendon injury focus, and different stages of osteochondral injury of the patients were recorded. The reconstructed image score, PSNR, SSIM, RMSE, and running time were calculated accordingly. The results showed that the detection rates of osteochondral injury (97.58%), joint effusion (91.21%), and soft tissue swelling (93.47%) in the CNN-MRI group were higher than those in GRAPPA (81.14%, 74.24%, and 76.11%), SPIRiT (80.66%, 73.66%, and 74.87%), and SAKE (86.96%, 82.61%, and 80.5%) groups (P < 0.05). The number of patients with 5 scores of reconstructed images in the CNN-MRI group (19 cases) was remarkably higher than that in GRAPPA (12 cases), SPIRiT (11 cases), and SAKE groups (14 cases) (P < 0.05). PSNR and SSIM of reconstructed image of patients in CNN-MRI group were much higher in contrast to those in GRAPPA, SPIRiT, and SAKE groups (P < 0.05), while the RMSE and running time were much lower than other algorithms (P < 0.05). In addition, the accuracy of evaluating the osteochondral injury in stage I and stage II for the patients in the CNN-MRI group was obviously higher than that in GRAPPA, SPIRiT, and SAKE groups (P < 0.05). In short, CNN-MRI algorithm could greatly improve the quality and PSNR of MRI reconstructed images, shorten the running time, and had excellent performance in showing the details of tendon injury, ligament injury, and bone contusion lesions. Moreover, it had a good effect on image processing of football players, could improve the accuracy of the diagnosis of ankle joint injuries, and could assist clinicians in the imaging diagnosis of ankle joint injuries of the football players.
