Abstract:Objectives: This qualitative study explored perceptions of anemia prevention among adolescent girls from low- to mid-socioeconomic backgrounds to identify educational needs for effective intervention. Methods: This qualitative study employed focus group discussions (FGDs) for data collection. Participants were recruited through purposive sampling based on specific criteria, with each FGD comprising 7-9 participants. A total of 3 FGDs were conducted, involving 23 high school female students. The discussions, guided by an interview guide, took place in classrooms at two different schools. Verbatim transcripts were created from the FGD recordings and analyzed using a thematic analysis approach. Results: The study revealed several information gaps, including an incomplete understanding of anemia, prevention strategies, and its consequences. Comprehensive knowledge about the causes and effects of anemia, along with the importance of iron supplementation, was identified as essential educational needs for adolescent girls. Support from family members and teachers was deemed crucial during the implementation of anemia prevention strategies. The participants recognized anemia as a serious health issue and emphasized the importance of prevention. Conclusions: Key aspects of anemia prevention need to be integrated into nutrition education programs for adolescents. Addressing these information gaps can enhance the promotion of anemia prevention strategies and improve adherence among adolescents.

One of the causes of iron deficiency anemia is inadequate nutritional intake. This study explores iron-deficiency anemia and associated factors among adolescent girls and women in a rural area of Jatinangor, Indonesia. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted with 95 adolescent girls and 85 women between April and November 2018. Cluster random sampling was used to select the participants from seven villages in the Jatinangor district. After obtaining informed consent, we collected sociodemographic data, menstrual histories, and related data, including nutritional intake using 24-hour dietary recall. Anthropometrics were gathered to determine the body mass Index (BMI), and venous blood samples were analyzed for complete blood count and hemoglobin levels. Descriptive statistics followed by bivariate and multivariable logistic regression were used to identify anemia-associated factors. Results: The prevalence of iron deficiency anemia among the girls was 21.1% and 9.4% among women, with an average hemoglobin level in adolescents of 10.75 g/dL (± 0.79) and in adults 11.20 g/dL (± 0.61), whereas MCV was 74.49± 8.22 fL in adolescents and 7.61± 8.62 fL in adults. The majority of our samples were not stunted in growth and were also within a normal weight range. Multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that protein intake (OR=0.25; 95% CI 0.11– 0.58) was a positively associated factor with anemia. Conclusion: The prevalence of iron-deficiency anemia in this study represents a mild public health problem in the study sample. Based on the hemoglobin level, anemia, can be classified as moderate in adolescents and mild in adults. Low levels of MCH indicate iron-deficiency anemia. Sufficient protein intake did not prevent anemia due to macronutrient and micronutrient intake. A diagnosis of anemia is made when the red blood cell (RBC) count is <4.2 million/μL, or hemoglobin (Hb) is <12 g/dL. 2 The most significant cause of anemia is iron deficiency, which accounts for at least 50% of cases of anemia. 3–7 Low levels of MCH can be used as a standard for the diagnosis of iron-deficiency anemia (IDA). 8 Iron is a micronutrient that is essential for hemoglobin production and enzyme function. Abstract:Background: Anemia is a common health problem among adolescents that needs to be resolved immediately. It is estimated that more than 50% of female adolescents aged 12-15 years have anemia. Some of the anemia's effects on adolescents include stunted growth, decreased learning ability, and susceptibility to infectious diseases. Objectives: To identify evidence for nutrition education's effectiveness on anemia knowledge and hemoglobin levels in female adolescents aged 12 to 19. Methods: Using study eligibility criteria, three electronic databases (Scopus, Science Direct, and Pubmed) were searched within five years for relevant articles. Review Manager (RevMan) version 5.4.1 was used to analyze the research findings. Results: Based on the results, there was no significant relationship between education and anemia knowledge in the control and treatment groups (p<0.05). Neither group also had a significant relationship between nutrition education and Hb concentration. However, the Active, Creative, Effective, and Fun Learning or Pembelajaran Aktif, Kreatif, Efektif, dan Menyenangkan (PAKEM) program approach impacted adolescent anemia knowledge. The mean difference value of 0, which indicates the intervention group is more effective than the control group, presented significant results. The estimated effect can be seen in the forest plot image to the left of the vertical line. Conclusions: Based on the meta-analysis, the PAKEM method is a nutritional education method that provides significant results on female adolescents' knowledge regarding anemia and Fe tablet consumption. However, the nutritional education method did not affect hemoglobin levels.

Abstract:Anemia affects people worldwide and results in increased morbidity and mortality, particularly in children and reproductive-age women. Anemia is caused by an imbalance between red blood cell (RBC) loss and production (erythropoiesis), which can be caused by not only nutritional factors but also non-nutritional factors, such as inflammation and genetics. Understanding the complex and varied etiology of anemia is crucial for developing effective interventions and monitoring anemia control programs. This review focusses on two interrelated nonnutritional causes of anemia: malaria infection and RBC disorders (thalassemia and G6PD deficiency), as well as tuberculosis. According to the Haldane hypothesis, thalassemia occurs as a protective trait toward malaria infection, whereas G6PDd arises in malaria-endemic regions because of positive selection. Indonesia is a malariaendemic region; thus, the frequency of thalassemia and G6PD deficiency is high, which contributes to a greater risk for non-nutritional anemia. As Indonesia is the second global contributor to the newly diagnosed tuberculosis, and active pulmonary tuberculosis patients are more anemic, tuberculosis is also contributes to the increasing risk of anemia. Therefore, to reduce anemia rates in Indonesia, authorities must consider non-nutritional causes that might influence the local incidence of anemia, and apply co-management of endemic infectious disease such as malaria and tuberculosis, and of genetic disease i.e. thalassemia and G6PDd.

Abstract:Anemia is a condition in which hemoglobin (Hb) concentration being lower than a specific threshold. The prevalence of anemia among adolescents is varies among country and its proportion is higher in developing countries. In Indonesia, the proportion of anemia in the 15-24-year age group was 32%. Anemia in adolescents has a negative impact on decreased immunity, impaired physical growth and mental development, concentration, learning achievement, adolescent fitness and productivity. Knowledge of the extent and causes of anemia in adolescence is very important because it is a window of opportunity for interventions to improve adolescent health. This study aims to describe level of Hb and knowledge regarding anemia and its prevention among adolescents. This research is a descriptive study with a cross sectional method using Hb meter to assess Hb level and questionnaire to assess knowledge regarding anemia and its prevention among adolescents, conducted in November 2019. The respondents were 42 adolescents in SMPN 9 Palembang. The ages of respondents in this study ranged from 12-13 years, consisting of 36% boys and 64% girls. The mean value of Hb level in all adolescent was 13.78 g/dL with 12% of respondents had anemia. A total of 76% adolescents had poor knowledge, while 24% adolescents had good knowledge. The mean value of Hb level in all adolescent was normal, only few adolescents had anemia. This study also shows majority of the adolescents have poor knowledge about anemia and its prevention.
A Review of the Risk Factors for Iron Deficiency Anaemia among Adolescents in Developing Countries

Abstract:Introduction. Identifying the root causes of iron deficiency anaemia is a prerequisite for effective management and prevention in adolescents. This systematic review assessed risk factors of iron deficiency anaemia among adolescents living in developing countries. Method. Electronic databases such as PubMed, Cochrane Library, Science Direct, Google Scholar, and SCOPUS were comprehensively searched for studies published between 1990 and 2020 that involved risk factors of iron deficiency anaemia among adolescents living in developing countries. The quality of the included studies was assessed using the American Dietetic Association Quality Criteria Checklist. Results. A total of 2,252 publications were reviewed, and only fifteen cross-sectional studies were eligible for inclusion, eight of which focused on female adolescents and seven on both genders. Direct risk factors contributing to anaemia among adolescents included food intake practices (n = 10 studies), female adolescents (n = 8 studies), menstruation (n = 5 studies), and parasitic infection (n = 6 studies). Indirect risk factors found to be associated with anaemia among adolescents included low educational status (n = 4 studies) and low socioeconomic status (n = 3 studies). All fifteen studies were of good quality. Conclusion. Food intake practices, female adolescents, menstruation, parasitic infection, and low educational status were the leading risk factors of iron deficiency anaemia among adolescents. Further research should concentrate on assessing the effectiveness and efficacy of existing interventions aimed at preventing iron deficiency among vulnerable groups in developing countries.

Abstract:Anemia in breastfeeding women is a neglected global health issue with significant implications for maternal and child health. Despite its widespread occurrence and adverse effects, this problem remains largely unknown and overlooked on the global health agenda. Despite efforts to improve health access coverage and provide iron and folic acid supplementation, anemia persists. This underscores the need for a comprehensive approach to address the problem. Urgent action must be taken to prioritize education and awareness campaigns, ensure access to nutritious food, and enhance healthcare services. Education programs should focus on promoting iron-rich diets, dispelling cultural myths, and providing practical guidance. Improving healthcare services requires increasing availability, ensuring a consistent supply of iron supplements, and providing adequate training for healthcare providers. A successful implementation relies on a strong collaboration between the government, healthcare providers, and community. It is crucial that we acknowledge that high coverage alone is insufficient for solving the issue, emphasizing the importance of targeted interventions and a strategic implementation. By adopting a comprehensive approach and addressing the underlying causes of anemia, Indonesia can make significant progress in reducing its prevalence and improving the overall health of its population, particularly among breastfeeding women.

Abstract:Background and purpose: The prevalence of anemia among adolescent girls in Indonesia remains high. Poor nutrition is a risk factor of anemia among adolescent girls, which is likely related to food intake restrictions to achieve a desired body shape (body image), and the habit of drinking tea while eating which can affect the absorption of iron. This study aims to determine the relationship between anemia with body image perception and tea drinking habits among adolescent girls.Methods: This study used a cross-sectional design carried out from March-May 2018, involving girls aged 15-18 years at high schools in Badung District. Two schools were selected from 44 high schools, then a sample of 106 students were selected by systematic random sampling. Data collected included hemoglobin levels measured with hematology autoanalyzer, nutritional status with anthropometric measurements, and data on socio-demographics, socio-economics, tea drinking and eating habits, menstrual pattern, helminthiasis, knowledge and perception of body image with face-to-face individual interviews. Data were analyzed using the Chi square test for bivariate analysis, and multivariate using logistic regressionResults: The prevalence of anemia (hemoglobin <12 g/dL) in adolescent girls was 13.2%. The results of the logistic regression analysis showed that the variables associated with anemia were poor knowledge about anemia with an adjusted odds ratio (AOR)=11.4 (95%CI: 1.6-83.1), no iron supplement consumption (AOR=14.7; 95%CI: 1.9-109.8), negative body image (AOR=30.6; 95%CI: 2.9-321.1), tea drinking habits while eating (AOR=52.2; 95%CI: 4.2-642.9) and excessive menstrual volume (AOR=17.1; 95%CI: 1.6-185.9).Conclusion: Negative perceptions of body image and tea drinking habits while eating increase the risk of anemia among adolescent girls aged 15-18 years. In addition, poor knowledge about anemia, a history of not consuming iron supplements and excessive menstrual volume can also increase the risk. These factors need to be considered when designing policies to reduce anemia among adolescent girls.

It is essential for teenagers who are going through a period of rapid growth to promptly address anemia since untreated anemia can negatively impact their reproductive health. This literature review investigated the relationship between nutritional and anthropometric status indicators, body composition, and prevalence of anemia in teenage girls. Studies were selected based on the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) criteria. A comprehensive search across multiple databases (PubMed= 409, ScienceDirect= 3153, Scopus= 4, Sage Journals= 358) and manual citation of five articles yielded 3929 articles, of which 630 were excluded for irrelevance, one was inaccessible, and nine articles were included in the study after assessing their eligibility. The review's findings suggest that indicators such as Body Mass Index (BMI) and Mid-Upper Arm Circumference (MUAC) are indicated as initial assessments to screen the nutritional status of adolescent females and estimate their risk of anemia. Only one article has specifically discussed the connection between fat mass and anemia in terms of body composition. The need for studies on anthropometry and body composition-related anemia underscores the need to broaden investigations to gain a more nuanced understanding of this subject. Indian adolescents' perceptions of anaemia and its preventive measures: Aqualitative study

Abstract:High prevalence of anaemia is a severe public health problem in several low- and middle-income countries like India. A qualitative inquiry was designed to understand the perceptions of adolescents regarding anaemia and anaemia prevention measures. Convenience sampling was employed to recruit 39 adolescents (19 girls; 20 boys) from Tikari, India. Interviews were carried out in the local language, audio-recorded and transcribed verbatim. Hemoglobin concentration was also assessed from a single drop of capillary blood using the HemoCue, and the participants were asked to share their Science/Biology and Home Science textbooks. Interview data was analysed thematically. Descriptive statistics were used to examine the distributions of the hemoglobin data while textbooks were analysed using content analysis to verify the coverage of anaemia and anaemia-related matter. Seven themes were identified: (i) Poor understanding of the term anaemia; (ii) Minimal discussion about anaemia in classroom; (iii) Limited knowledge about symptoms of anaemia; (iv) Limited awareness about prevention and cure of anaemia; (v) Perception of iron folic acid and deworming tablets among students; (vi) Lack of contribution of health workers in the prevention of anaemia; (vii) No knowledge of 'Anemia free India' programme. More than half of the sample had anaemia (16.7% mild anaemia, 33.3% moderate anaemia, 2.8% severe anaemia). Content analysis revealed that there was limited discussion about anaemia in both Home Science and Science textbooks. Behavioural interventions should focus on inculcating healthy culinary and dietary practices and addressing the gaps in knowledge and understanding of anaemia and its prevention among adolescents.

Abstract:Objective: To perform a systematic review to evaluate iron, vitamin A, zinc, and iodine status and intakes in children and adolescents (0-19 years) in Ethiopia, Kenya, Nigeria, and South Africa. Method: Both national and subnational data published from the year 2005 to 2015 were searched via MEDLINE, Scopus, and national public health websites. For each micronutrient and country, status data from relevant studies and surveys were combined into an average prevalence and weighted by sample size (WAVG). Inadequate intakes were estimated from mean (SD) intakes. Results: This review included 55 surveys and studies, 17 from Ethiopia, 11 from Kenya, 12 from Nigeria, and 16 from South Africa. The WAVG prevalence of anemia ranged from 25% to 53%, iron deficiency from 12% to 29%, vitamin A deficiency (VAD) from 14% to 42%, zinc deficiency from 32% to 63%, and iodine deficiency from 15% to 86% in children aged 0 to 19 years from 4 countries. Generally, children 15 ppm) salt ranged from 2% in Kenya to 96% in Ethiopia. Conclusion: With large variation within the 4 African countries, our data indicate that anemia and vitamin A, zinc, and iodine deficiencies are problems of public health significance. Effective public health strategies such as dietary diversification and food fortification are needed to improve micronutrient intake in both younger and older children.

Abstract:Adolescence is a time of physical and psychological growth as people transition to adulthood, and proper nutrition is essential for this process. Anemia, a condition characterized by a lack of red blood cells or hemoglobin, is the most common health issue among young women. In 2018, the prevalence of anemia was higher in women (27.2%) than in men (20.3%), and particularly high (32%) in the 15-24 age group. The purpose of this study was to investigate the prevalence of anemia among teenage women in a rural area . The study used a cross-sectional design and included 112 middle school female students in Rejang Lebong Regency. The data was collected using survey questionnaire and a semi-quantitative food frequency questionnaire to assess factors such as knowledge, the intake of calorie, protein, vitamin C, and iron. Correlation analysis and multiple linear regression were used to analyze the relations between these variables and anemia status. The correlation analysis showed that knowledge, calorie intake, and vitamin C were not significantly correlated with anemia (p values 0.378, 0.563 and 0.087, respectively). However, there was a significant correlation between iron and protein intake with the occurrence of anemia (p values 0.000 and 0.030).

Abstract:Background: Anemia, a global health concern, affects one-fourth of the global population, particularly women. In Indonesia, its prevalence is 23.7%, with 32.0% among 15-24 year-olds. Factors include poor nutrition, infectious diseases, chronic diseases, inherited disorders, and inadequate healthcare access. This study aimed to investigate anemia prevalence and its etiology among medical students from Jakarta. Methods: This study was a descriptive research with a cross-sectional approach. Undergraduate students aged 18-23 years old were selected and consented to participate by a consecutive nonrandom sampling methods. Laboratory blood data were evaluated (including Hb, MCV, MCH, HbA2, and ferritin levels) and DNA was isolated to confirm the type of thalassemia carrier. Results: In total, 140 medical students, mainly female, were recruited. Anemia was found in 13.6% (11.4% had low MCV and/or MCH), and 16.5% had low MCV and/or MCH without anemia. Hb electrophoresis revealed high HbA2 values, suggesting the HbE variant (2.1%), and β-thalassemia carrier (0.7%). DNA analysis confirmed the cd26 mutation and heterozygous IVS1nt5. Among those without anemia, 5% had α-deletion, while in the group with anemia, 1.4% had α-deletion (with coexistent IDA), 3.6% had α-deletion, and 0.7% had β-mutation. Conclusion: DNA analysis can identify specific mutations associated with alpha-thalassemia, distinguishing between iron deficiency anemia and the alpha-thalassemia trait. Thalassemia screening should involve low MCV and/or MCH values as the first step (stage 1), followed by Hb analysis (stage 2) and DNA analysis (stage 3). In common areas, a combination of Hb and DNA testing is best. However, healthcare professionals must diagnose and treat thalassemia, as proper management relies on accurately identifying the underlying condition.

Abstract:INTRODUCTION: Both nationally and internationally, anemia is one of the greatest public health challenges. It mainly affects children, adolescents, and women of reproductive age and manifests itself in different etiological forms. To examine the worldwide scientific production on anemia in children and adolescents focusing on the Scopus database, in a period between 2011 and 2020, the present bibliometric study is proposed. METHODOLOGY: The Scopus database was used as the main data source to collect relevant manuscripts on anemia in children and adolescents from 2011 to 2020. The CSV data were exported to SciVal for analysis of most published topics, collaborations, most published institutions, productivity by journal category, most published journals, most published medical specialties, and most published authors. RESULTS: Of the 1784 manuscripts reported, it was shown that the year 2020 had the highest number of publications with 33, 19, 13, and 15 articles in the Q1 (top 25%), Q2 (top 26%–50%), Q3 (top 51%–75%), and Q4 quartiles (76%–100%), respectively. The University of Pennsylvania (USA), Johns Hopkins University (USA), and Baylor College of Medicine (USA) were the top three institutions with the highest article production. The top three places were for Pediatric Blood and Cancer, Public Health Nutrition, and Journal of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology with 20, 12, and 11 publications, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: In recent years, there has been evidence of an increase in the number of publications referring to anemia in children and adolescents, experiencing a notorious increase from 2015. In terms of scientific production, the United States, Egypt, and Canada are positioned as the leading countries in this field.
Anaemia among school-going adolescents in Burkina Faso: Prevalence and associated factors

Abstract:Adolescence, a stage of growth between 10 and 19 years, is a transitional period of intense cognitive, emotional and physical development. Though iron deficiency is the leading cause of morbidity and mortality among this age group, nutritional interventions targeting adolescents are rare. To inform policy and practice aimed at adolescent health, we established the burden of anaemia among school-going adolescents in Center West Burkina Faso and investigated the potential explanatory factors. A cross-sectional survey was conducted between January and March 2021. Blood samples, socio-demographic, socioeconomic, anthropometric, dietary and water, sanitation and hygiene data from 2947 students aged 10-18 years were collected. Anaemia was determined by the World Health Organization's sex- and age-specific haemoglobin concentrations. χ2 tests and logistic regressions were used to identify factors associated with anaemia. The prevalence of anaemia among adolescents in the sample was 36.2%, including 24.2% mild, 11.6% moderate and 0.4% severe anaemia. Compared to males, females were 19% less likely to have mild anaemia (adjusted Odds Ratio [aOR] = 0.81; 95% confidence intervals [CI]: 0.689, 0.955) but 42% more likely to be moderately or severely anaemic (aOR = 1.42; 95% CI: 1.102, 1.831). Among iron-rich foods, tamarind (aOR = 0.75; 95% CI: 0.610, 0.929) and pumpkin leaves (aOR = 0.77; 95% CI: 0.605, 0.974) were associated with lower odds of anaemia. Several water, sanitation and hygiene factors were associated with higher haemoglobin, including handwashing after toilet use (β = 0.50; 95% CI: 0.031, 0.966) and tooth brushing twice daily (β = 0.19; 95% CI: 0.030, 0.354). Anaemia among adolescents in Burkina Faso should be addressed with interventions targeting diet, sanitation and hygiene.

Abstract:ABSTRACT According to Riskesdas 2018, the prevalence of anemia in adolescent girls is very high, at 84.5%. Data from the City of Mataram Health Department in 2017 Puskesmas Selaparang the highest prevalence was 50.43%. Based on the Hb level screening conducted by the Selaparang Health Center, the highest number of anemia in SMAN 9 Mataram was 63 students. The impact of anemia in adolescents, namely decreased reproductive health, decreased learning rates, a height that has not been achieved maximally decreased motor development, and inhibited brain intelligence. Anemia during adolescence will be very influential during pregnancy, childbirth, prematurity, and low birth weight. The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between parents' income factors, maternal education, tea-drinking habits, knowledge, attitudes, iron supplement intake, menstrual conditions, and the incidence of anemia in adolescent girls at SMAN 9 Mataram in 2018. This research is a quantitative study with a cross approach sectional. The sampling technique was nonprobability sampling, namely total sampling and a total sample of 63 people who were identified as anemic in 2018. Data analysis used the chi-square test. Based on the results of statistical analysis, there was a relationship between parents' income (p = 0.004), maternal education (p = 0.000), knowledge (p = 000), consumption of iron supplements (p = 0.008), and menstrual conditions (p = 0.004). ) with the incidence of anemia in adolescent girls at SMAN 9 Mataram in 2018, and there is no relationship between the habit of consuming tea (p = 0.753) and attitudes (0.323) with the incidence of anemia in adolescent girls at Mataram Senior High School in 2018. Based on the research results, suggestions that can be suggested that the Mataram City Health Office collaborate with the Puskesmas in evaluating the program's implementation should immediately follow up. Abstract:Background Anaemia is a serious public health problem. It is the second-commonest contributing factor to years lost by adolescents to disability and death. Targeting adolescent girls will allow a window of opportunity to correct their nutritional health and improve their obstetric outcomes. Studies in India have reported varying prevalence rates of anaemia among adolescent girls. Hence, we did a systematic review and meta-analysis of community-based studies to obtain a comprehensive pooled estimate of the prevalence of anaemia among adolescent girls in India. Methods We did a systematic electronic search in PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Library and Google scholar to retrieve community-based studies that reported the prevalence of anaemia among adolescent girls (10–19 years) in India, without any date or language restriction. To estimate the pooled prevalence and heterogeneity, the random-effects model and I2 statistical methods were used. We did subgroup analyses based on geographical region, study setting, method used to measure haemoglobin concentration, and year of publication. Results We included 35 studies in this meta-analysis comprising 152 640 participants. The pooled prevalence of anaemia among adolescent girls was 65.7% (95% CI 59.3%– 71.9%). There was significant heterogeneity between the studies (I2 99.6%; p<0.001). Conclusion There is a high prevalence of anaemia among adolescent girls in India. While all regions of the country have a high prevalence, tribal areas need special attention. Targeted actions need to focus on the identification of determinants of anaemia apart from iron supplementation.

Abstract:Backgrounds: Iron nutritional anemia is anemia that arises due to empty iron reserves in the body so that the formation of hemoglobin is disrupted. Hemoglobin is part of red blood cells used to determine anemia status. Decreased iron intake can reduce hemoglobin levels in the body. Aim: The purpose of the study was to determine food intake and consumption of blood supplement tablets (Iron) on the incidence of anemia among adolescent girls in Urban and Rural areas. Study Design: This type of research is Experimental Research using Quasi Experimental design. Place and Duration of Study: This research was carried out at SMP Negeri 3 Manado and SMP Kristen Koha after obtaining approval from the ethics commission in August – September 2023 Methods: The population in this study were adolescent girls in SMP Negeri 3 Manado and SMP Kristen Koha. The sample in this study was obtained from the Estimating the difference between two population proportions with absolute precision formula totaling 88 students divided into 44 adolescent girls in urban areas and 44 adolescent girls in rural areas. Results: This study indicates that there is a difference in the average hemoglobin levels of adolescent girls in State Junior High School 3 Manado and Kristen Koha with a value of p<0.005, there is a difference in the average food intake (energy) of adolescent girls State Junior High School 3 Manado and Kristen Koha with a value of p<0.005, there is a difference in the average consumption of Iron tablets of adolescent girls in State Junior High School 3 Manado and Kristen Koha with a value of p<0.005. Conclusion: The conclusion of this study is that there is a difference in the average hemoglobin levels of urban and rural adolescent girls with p<0.005, there is a difference in the average food intake (energy) of urban and rural adolescent girls p<0.001, and there is a difference in the average consumption of Iron tablets of urban and rural adolescent girls with p<0.004.
The longitudinal relationship between nutritional status and anaemia among Malaysian adolescents

Abstract:Introduction: The triple burden of malnutrition characterised by stunting and wasting, overweight/obesity, and anaemia experienced by Malaysians causes severe and long-lasting damage during the period of development and rapid growth, particularly in adolescence. This study aimed to demonstrate the trend of anaemia prevalence and to determine its longitudinal association with nutritional status and lifestyle among Malaysian adolescents. Method: The study involved secondary data analysis from the Malaysian Health and Adolescents Longitudinal Research Team (MyHeART) study. A closed cohort secondary data analysis was performed from the dynamic cohort of 528 adolescents (male = 151; female = 377) aged 13 years attending secondary school who were followed up at 15 and 17 years. Anaemia status was determined by haemoglobin level < 12g/dL based on FBC, and iron deficiency anaemia (IDA) was determined when the Mentzer Index < 13. A generalised estimating equation (GEE) was constructed to investigate the longitudinal relationship between nutritional status and lifestyle on anaemia status over five years. Results: The trend of anaemia prevalence increased significantly across the age group (7•9%; 95% CI: 2•3-11•1, 13•9%; 95% CI: 10•8-15•7 and 15•8%; 95% CI: 3•8-23•1) at 13, 15 and 17 years, respectively, especially among females. The trend of anaemia prevalence among females, also increased significantly across the age group (11.1%;95% CI:6.7-17.8, 15.7%;95% CI:11.4-21.3, 23.1%;95% CI:16.8-31.0). A similar trend was noted for the prevalence of IDA among those who were anaemic (66•5%; 95% CI: 40•4-85•3, 72•2%;95% CI: 54•8-85•4, 76•3%; 95% CI: 59•2-87•7). A longitudinal analysis using GEE revealed that adolescents who did not meet the Recommended Nutrient Intake (RNI) for total iron intake per day were significantly associated with anaemia (RR=1•517;95% CI: 1•012-2•275; p=0•044) and IDA (RR=1•776;95% CI: 1•225-2•57; p= 0•002). Conclusion: The overall trend of anaemia among adolescents is in increasing trend and anaemia is prevalent among female adolescents in this study. It is crucial to understand that the current fortification strategy may need to be revisited, and robust intervention programmes are necessary and should be sex specific.
