Abstract:Objective: The objective of our study was to determine the prevalence of anemia among 14-19 years school going girls, risk factors for it and profile of micronutrient status among rural girls from western state of India. Design: Using a cross-sectional design, we obtained information on socio-demography, menstruation, dietary habits, knowledge and daily consumption of the government recommended iron and folic acid (IFA) tablets, and anthropometry. Blood was collected to assess haemoglobin, red blood cell indices, serum iron, folate and vitamin B 12 levels. Settings: Nagpur district, Maharashtra, India Participants: A total of 221 girls aged 14-19 years studying in 24 government institutes included. Results: 57% girls were anaemic, 84% had deficiency of one or more micronutrients and 60% were malnourished based on Body Mass Index (BMI). The prevalence of iron, vitamin B 12 and folate deficiency was 37.7%, 69.8% and 1.4% respectively. Among anaemic girls, iron and vitamin B 12 deficiency was observed in 45.5% and 67.5% respectively, vs. among non-anaemic girls it was 27% and 73% respectively. Iron deficiency was a predictor of anaemia and its severity. Girls residing in non-nuclear family were more likely to have anaemia. The consumption of daily non-vegetarian food and green leafy vegetables was 3% and 3.6% respectively. Only 9% consumed IFA tablets in the past two weeks. Conclusions: Anemia is common in adolescent girls, particularly associated with iron and vitamin B12 deficiency. There is need to reconsider the approach to prevention of anaemia in adolescent girls, particularly before they become pregnant.

The prevalence of anaemia in rural adolescent girls - A cross-sectional study to understand the sociodemographic and dietary determinants in Dharwad District, India

Abstract:Context: Anaemia is one leading cause of morbidity among adolescent girls. Prevention, early detection, and treatment can break the intergeneration cycle of malnutrition. Aims/objectives: The aim of the study was to estimate the prevalence of anaemia and assess its sociodemographic determinants and understand its association with the dietary pattern of rural adolescent girls. Settings and design: A cross-sectional study was conducted among 350 adolescent girls studying in the school of Kalgatigi Taluk, Dharwad district. The school girls were interviewed using a predesigned structured questionnaire by interview method. A food frequency questionnaire was used to assess the dietary pattern. Haemoglobin levels were estimated using Sahli's method. Statistical analysis used: Data were entered in Microsoft Excel and analysed using SPSS version 19 and the Chi-square test was applied to study the significance. Results: Rural adolescent school girls between the age group of 13-16 years were included. The prevalence of anaemia among them was found to be 47.4% and was significantly associated with the educational status of the mother, their socioeconomic status (SES), and type of diet. Vegetarian girls had a higher prevalence of anaemia. The frequency of meat and egg consumption was significantly associated with anaemia. The prevalence of anaemia was higher in thin and severely thin girls based on WHO-BMI. Conclusions: Anaemia in rural adolescent girls is of high burden and public health importance with a prevalence of 47.4% and significant association with dietary habits, SES, and BMI.

Abstract:Objectives: Adolescence is an important transition phase and the burden of anemia among adolescent school-going children is not well explored. The present study was carried out to determine the prevalence of anemia among school-going adolescent girls and to explore their awareness on anemia. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted among 217 adolescent girls studying in a residential school of Bibinagar village, Telangana. A pre-tested, semi-structured questionnaire was administered to collect the data. Hemoglobin (Hb) was estimated using TrueHb. Data was entered into excel and was analyzed using SPSS software version 21. Results: The mean (±SD) age of the adolescent girls was 13.8 (±0.99) years. About 74.2 % of the girls were in 12-14 years' age group. About 91.7 % had attained menarche. The prevalence of anemia was 81.6 % with a mean (±SD) Hb of 9.5 (±2.7) g/dl among adolescent girls. Among the adolescent girls, 32.7 % had severe anemia, 31.8 % had moderate anemia and 17.1 % had mild anemia. About 86.2 % adolescent girls had heard of anemia while 60.8 % adolescent girls felt that anemia is preventable and only 27.6 % were aware about iron-rich foods. About 38 % of adolescent girls were not aware of any causes of anemia. Conclusions: The prevalence of anemia was very high among the school-going adolescent girls of rural Telangana. The awareness regarding causes of anemia and iron-rich foods was low among study adolescent girls. Thus, there is a dire need to conduct frequent Test, Treat and Talk (T3) Anemia camps in schools through district school health program.

Abstract:ABSTRACT According to Riskesdas 2018, the prevalence of anemia in adolescent girls is very high, at 84.5%. Data from the City of Mataram Health Department in 2017 Puskesmas Selaparang the highest prevalence was 50.43%. Based on the Hb level screening conducted by the Selaparang Health Center, the highest number of anemia in SMAN 9 Mataram was 63 students. The impact of anemia in adolescents, namely decreased reproductive health, decreased learning rates, a height that has not been achieved maximally decreased motor development, and inhibited brain intelligence. Anemia during adolescence will be very influential during pregnancy, childbirth, prematurity, and low birth weight. The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between parents' income factors, maternal education, tea-drinking habits, knowledge, attitudes, iron supplement intake, menstrual conditions, and the incidence of anemia in adolescent girls at SMAN 9 Mataram in 2018. This research is a quantitative study with a cross approach sectional. The sampling technique was nonprobability sampling, namely total sampling and a total sample of 63 people who were identified as anemic in 2018. Data analysis used the chi-square test. Based on the results of statistical analysis, there was a relationship between parents' income (p = 0.004), maternal education (p = 0.000), knowledge (p = 000), consumption of iron supplements (p = 0.008), and menstrual conditions (p = 0.004). ) with the incidence of anemia in adolescent girls at SMAN 9 Mataram in 2018, and there is no relationship between the habit of consuming tea (p = 0.753) and attitudes (0.323) with the incidence of anemia in adolescent girls at Mataram Senior High School in 2018. Based on the research results, suggestions that can be suggested that the Mataram City Health Office collaborate with the Puskesmas in evaluating the program's implementation should immediately follow up. Abstract:Failure to understand and address the problem of malnutrition and its associated factors among female adolescents could lead to a vicious cycle of intergenerational malnutrition. A cross-sectional study was conducted in six secondary schools of four rural municipalities in Darchula District, Nepal. Data collection for the study was conducted from November 2021 to February 2022. Four hundred female adolescent students aged 15 to 19 years old were selected using quota sampling. The study aims to examine the prevalence of malnutrition by assessing different levels of body mass index (BMI) that is thinness (BMI less than 18.5 kg/m2), normal (18.5 kg/m2 to 24.9 kg/m2), overweight (25 kg/m2 to 29.9 kg/m2) and obese (BMI more than or equal to 30 kg/m2). Along with BMI, factors associated with undernutrition, here identified as thinness, are assessed using a structured questionnaire. Additionally, key informant interviews and review of interventions was performed to understand the gaps in nutrition-related policies and programs of school going adolescents in the study district. Quantitative data analysis included a prevalence study and chi-square test along with simple and multiple logistic regression to obtain crude and adjusted odds ratio at 95% confidence interval for the significant factors with p < 0.05 identified in the chi-square test. Thematic analysis and reviews were used for the synthesis of qualitative data. The results show a 24.7% prevalence of thinness in the study participants. Pre-mensuration status (OR = 5.015, CI = 1.257-20.011, p < 0.022), father having a monthly paying job (OR = 4.384, CI = 1.135-16.928, p < 0.032), father's foreign employment (OR = 6.96, CI = 1.649-29.377, p < 0.008), household (HH) food insecurity status (OR = 2.079, CI = 1.182-3.658, p < 0.011) and grain/roots/tuber as most commonly bought food (OR = 9.487, CI = 1.182-76.138, p < 0.034) were found to be significantly associated with thinness. Information from the qualitative part identified gaps in existing interventions for an improved nutritional outcome among school going adolescent females. Further studies to understand the nutritional practices and its contributory factors in relation to thinness is encouraged. Stakeholders are urged to effectively address the shortcomings in existing interventions and adopt a more adolescent-centered approach to enhance the nutritional status of female adolescents.

Abstract:Introduction: Poor nutritional status during adolescence is an important determinant of health outcome. The adolescents have different needs and have diverse problems. Nutritional assessments among adolescents are important as they are the future parents and constitute a potentially susceptible group. The present study is an attempt to evaluate the prevalence of underweight, stunting and thinness including overweight among adolescent girls from rural community. Material and Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted among school going adolescent girls, 9-16 years studying in various schools in rural area of Kavre district, Nepal during 15thMarch to 15th September 2014. The weight and height were recorded from each participant in kilogram and centimetre respectively, and nutritional status of the adolescent girls was assessed through the Z-scores of underweight (weight for age), stunting (height for age) and thinness (BMI for age) according to WHO criteria. Data was entered and analyzed by using SPSS 19.0. Results: The overall prevalence of underweight, stunting and thinness was 31.98%, 21.08% and 14.94% respectively. It was concluded that highest (49.5%) prevalence of underweight was among 11 years of adolescent girls and the lowest (20.7%) was found in the age group of 13 years. Stunting was highest in age group of 9 years (37.34%) and the lowest prevalence of stunting was 10.7% in the age group of 14 years. The highest prevalence (24.2%) of thinness was found in 9 years and lowest prevalence (11.0%) was found in 10 years adolescent girls. Conclusion: It is concluded that there is a high prevalence of under nutrition among studied adolescent girls in the rural areas of Kavre district. Abstract:Background Anaemia is a serious public health problem. It is the second-commonest contributing factor to years lost by adolescents to disability and death. Targeting adolescent girls will allow a window of opportunity to correct their nutritional health and improve their obstetric outcomes. Studies in India have reported varying prevalence rates of anaemia among adolescent girls. Hence, we did a systematic review and meta-analysis of community-based studies to obtain a comprehensive pooled estimate of the prevalence of anaemia among adolescent girls in India. Methods We did a systematic electronic search in PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Library and Google scholar to retrieve community-based studies that reported the prevalence of anaemia among adolescent girls (10–19 years) in India, without any date or language restriction. To estimate the pooled prevalence and heterogeneity, the random-effects model and I2 statistical methods were used. We did subgroup analyses based on geographical region, study setting, method used to measure haemoglobin concentration, and year of publication. Results We included 35 studies in this meta-analysis comprising 152 640 participants. The pooled prevalence of anaemia among adolescent girls was 65.7% (95% CI 59.3%– 71.9%). There was significant heterogeneity between the studies (I2 99.6%; p<0.001). Conclusion There is a high prevalence of anaemia among adolescent girls in India. While all regions of the country have a high prevalence, tribal areas need special attention. Targeted actions need to focus on the identification of determinants of anaemia apart from iron supplementation.

Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted with 95 adolescent girls and 85 women between April and November 2018. Cluster random sampling was used to select the participants from seven villages in the Jatinangor district. After obtaining informed consent, we collected sociodemographic data, menstrual histories, and related data, including nutritional intake using 24-hour dietary recall. Anthropometrics were gathered to determine the body mass Index (BMI), and venous blood samples were analyzed for complete blood count and hemoglobin levels. Descriptive statistics followed by bivariate and multivariable logistic regression were used to identify anemia-associated factors. Results: The prevalence of iron deficiency anemia among the girls was 21.1% and 9.4% among women, with an average hemoglobin level in adolescents of 10.75 g/dL (± 0.79) and in adults 11.20 g/dL (± 0.61), whereas MCV was 74.49± 8.22 fL in adolescents and 7.61± 8.62 fL in adults. The majority of our samples were not stunted in growth and were also within a normal weight range. Multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that protein intake (OR=0.25; 95% CI 0.11– 0.58) was a positively associated factor with anemia. Conclusion: The prevalence of iron-deficiency anemia in this study represents a mild public health problem in the study sample. Based on the hemoglobin level, anemia, can be classified as moderate in adolescents and mild in adults. Low levels of MCH indicate iron-deficiency anemia. Sufficient protein intake did not prevent anemia due to macronutrient and micronutrient intake. A diagnosis of anemia is made when the red blood cell (RBC) count is <4.2 million/μL, or hemoglobin (Hb) is <12 g/dL. 2 The most significant cause of anemia is iron deficiency, which accounts for at least 50% of cases of anemia. 3–7 Low levels of MCH can be used as a standard for the diagnosis of iron-deficiency anemia (IDA). 8 Iron is a micronutrient that is essential for hemoglobin production and enzyme function. IDA is particularly high among pregnant women, children under five, adolescent girls, and women due to their higher nutritional requirements for iron. 9–11 Iron is required in menstruation, physical growth, reproductive maturation, and for cognitive growth and activity. 10,12–15 Iron deficiency generally occurs when iron intake from foods cannot meet the required needs to support its physiological needs and the iron supplied in the body is thus depleted. Adolescents with anemia tend to also experience anemia during pregnancy, which results in various adverse effects on pregnancy and childbirth. Some other studies have reported that anemic adolescent girls exhibit stunting. 16 Anemia can also be caused by other factors, including vitamin deficiencies, malaria, schistosomiasis, and hookworm. 9–11,14,17–20 Iron deficiency anemia is predicted to be the crucial nutritional problem. 21 According to Indonesia Baseline Health Research report in 2018, as many as 96.8% of adolescents in Indonesia aged 10–14 years and 96.4% of adolescents aged 15–19 years do not consume vegetables or fruit, which, as is known, are foods rich in essential micronutrients. 22 Protein is contained in vegetables and, lack of vegetable consumption can cause protein deficiency. Anaemia among school-going adolescents in Burkina Faso: Prevalence and associated factors

Abstract:Adolescence, a stage of growth between 10 and 19 years, is a transitional period of intense cognitive, emotional and physical development. Though iron deficiency is the leading cause of morbidity and mortality among this age group, nutritional interventions targeting adolescents are rare. To inform policy and practice aimed at adolescent health, we established the burden of anaemia among school-going adolescents in Center West Burkina Faso and investigated the potential explanatory factors. A cross-sectional survey was conducted between January and March 2021. Blood samples, socio-demographic, socioeconomic, anthropometric, dietary and water, sanitation and hygiene data from 2947 students aged 10-18 years were collected. Anaemia was determined by the World Health Organization's sex- and age-specific haemoglobin concentrations. χ2 tests and logistic regressions were used to identify factors associated with anaemia. The prevalence of anaemia among adolescents in the sample was 36.2%, including 24.2% mild, 11.6% moderate and 0.4% severe anaemia. Compared to males, females were 19% less likely to have mild anaemia (adjusted Odds Ratio [aOR] = 0.81; 95% confidence intervals [CI]: 0.689, 0.955) but 42% more likely to be moderately or severely anaemic (aOR = 1.42; 95% CI: 1.102, 1.831). Among iron-rich foods, tamarind (aOR = 0.75; 95% CI: 0.610, 0.929) and pumpkin leaves (aOR = 0.77; 95% CI: 0.605, 0.974) were associated with lower odds of anaemia. Several water, sanitation and hygiene factors were associated with higher haemoglobin, including handwashing after toilet use (β = 0.50; 95% CI: 0.031, 0.966) and tooth brushing twice daily (β = 0.19; 95% CI: 0.030, 0.354). Anaemia among adolescents in Burkina Faso should be addressed with interventions targeting diet, sanitation and hygiene.

Abstract:Adolescence is a time of physical and psychological growth as people transition to adulthood, and proper nutrition is essential for this process. Anemia, a condition characterized by a lack of red blood cells or hemoglobin, is the most common health issue among young women. In 2018, the prevalence of anemia was higher in women (27.2%) than in men (20.3%), and particularly high (32%) in the 15-24 age group. The purpose of this study was to investigate the prevalence of anemia among teenage women in a rural area . The study used a cross-sectional design and included 112 middle school female students in Rejang Lebong Regency. The data was collected using survey questionnaire and a semi-quantitative food frequency questionnaire to assess factors such as knowledge, the intake of calorie, protein, vitamin C, and iron. Correlation analysis and multiple linear regression were used to analyze the relations between these variables and anemia status. The correlation analysis showed that knowledge, calorie intake, and vitamin C were not significantly correlated with anemia (p values 0.378, 0.563 and 0.087, respectively). However, there was a significant correlation between iron and protein intake with the occurrence of anemia (p values 0.000 and 0.030).
Indian adolescents' perceptions of anaemia and its preventive measures: Aqualitative study

Abstract:High prevalence of anaemia is a severe public health problem in several low- and middle-income countries like India. A qualitative inquiry was designed to understand the perceptions of adolescents regarding anaemia and anaemia prevention measures. Convenience sampling was employed to recruit 39 adolescents (19 girls; 20 boys) from Tikari, India. Interviews were carried out in the local language, audio-recorded and transcribed verbatim. Hemoglobin concentration was also assessed from a single drop of capillary blood using the HemoCue, and the participants were asked to share their Science/Biology and Home Science textbooks. Interview data was analysed thematically. Descriptive statistics were used to examine the distributions of the hemoglobin data while textbooks were analysed using content analysis to verify the coverage of anaemia and anaemia-related matter. Seven themes were identified: (i) Poor understanding of the term anaemia; (ii) Minimal discussion about anaemia in classroom; (iii) Limited knowledge about symptoms of anaemia; (iv) Limited awareness about prevention and cure of anaemia; (v) Perception of iron folic acid and deworming tablets among students; (vi) Lack of contribution of health workers in the prevention of anaemia; (vii) No knowledge of 'Anemia free India' programme. More than half of the sample had anaemia (16.7% mild anaemia, 33.3% moderate anaemia, 2.8% severe anaemia). Content analysis revealed that there was limited discussion about anaemia in both Home Science and Science textbooks. Behavioural interventions should focus on inculcating healthy culinary and dietary practices and addressing the gaps in knowledge and understanding of anaemia and its prevention among adolescents.

Abstract:Adolescent girls are in the key stages of rapid physical and psychological development and have a great demand for iron. Anemia affects adolescent girls' health, future development, and even the health of their offspring. There has been limited study of adolescent girl anemia at the national and provincial levels in China. We investigated the anemia status of adolescent girls in China based on data from the China Nutrition and Health Surveillance (CNHS, 2015–2017). The anemia prevalence in Chinese adolescent girls aged 10–17 years is 8.5%, with mild anemia and moderate anemia accounting for 65.9 and 31.8%, respectively, and severe anemia accounting for only 2.3%. Significant urban–rural disparities and regional disparities were found in adolescent girl anemia. The anemia prevalence in adolescent girls varied from 3 to 13.4% in different provinces, and 90% of the provinces had anemia prevalence higher than 5%. Having started menstruating (OR = 2.58, p < 0.01) and living in rural areas (OR = 1.18, p < 0.05) were risk factors for anemia; having a mother with higher education was a protective factor (OR = 0.87, p < 0.05). As for food intake, consuming meat ≥35 g per day was a protective factor (OR = 0.90, p < 0.05). Consuming vegetables ≥3 times per day was also a protective factor (OR = 0.72, p < 0.01), while consuming vegetables ≥400 g per day was a risk factor (OR = 1.24, p < 0.01). Special attention should be paid to adolescent girls, especially to those already having started menstruating, living in rural areas, to those whose mother has a low education level, and to those with a relatively unbalanced diet. Comprehensive measures, including paying special attention to vulnerable areas and vulnerable subgroups of adolescent girls, would reduce the risk of anemia.

Abstract:Objectives: This qualitative study explored perceptions of anemia prevention among adolescent girls from low- to mid-socioeconomic backgrounds to identify educational needs for effective intervention. Methods: This qualitative study employed focus group discussions (FGDs) for data collection. Participants were recruited through purposive sampling based on specific criteria, with each FGD comprising 7-9 participants. A total of 3 FGDs were conducted, involving 23 high school female students. The discussions, guided by an interview guide, took place in classrooms at two different schools. Verbatim transcripts were created from the FGD recordings and analyzed using a thematic analysis approach. Results: The study revealed several information gaps, including an incomplete understanding of anemia, prevention strategies, and its consequences. Comprehensive knowledge about the causes and effects of anemia, along with the importance of iron supplementation, was identified as essential educational needs for adolescent girls. Support from family members and teachers was deemed crucial during the implementation of anemia prevention strategies. The participants recognized anemia as a serious health issue and emphasized the importance of prevention. Conclusions: Key aspects of anemia prevention need to be integrated into nutrition education programs for adolescents. Addressing these information gaps can enhance the promotion of anemia prevention strategies and improve adherence among adolescents.
Prevalence and determinants of anaemia among women of reproductive age in Aspirational Districts of India: an analysis of NFHS 4 and NFHS 5 data

Abstract:Abstract Background Over one-third of women worldwide suffer from anaemia. The prevalence of anaemia is particularly pronounced among women of reproductive age (WRA) in developing countries, such as India. No prior study has ever exclusively studied the prevalence of anaemia across the Aspirational Districts of India. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to examine the prevalence of anaemia across Aspirational Districts of India and to identify the determinants of anaemia among WRA in these districts. Methods From the National Family Health Survey (NFHS)-4 (2015-16) and NFHS-5 (2019-21), data on 114,444 and 108,782 women aged 15–49 from Aspirational Districts were analyzed in our study, respectively. Bivariate statistics and multivariable binary logistic regression were used to identify the determinants of anaemia. Results The national prevalence of anaemia among WRA has increased from 53% in NFHS-4 to 57% in NFHS-5 whereas anaemia among WRA in Aspirational Districts has increased from 58.7% in NFHS-4 to 61.1% in NFHS-5. Between 2015 and 2021, over 60% of Aspirational Districts experienced an increase in the prevalence of anaemia and one-fourth, specifically 29 out of 112, observed a rise by at least 10 percentage points (pp). Notably, there are significant variations in anaemia prevalence among districts, with Simdega and Udalgiri having the highest anaemia prevalence in NFHS-4 and NFHS-5 at 78.2% and 81.5%, respectively. During this period, Barpeta followed by Udalgiri of Assam have witnessed the maximum increase with 29.4% and 26.7% respectively. Moreover, pooled regression results show women with three to four children [AOR: 1.13, 95% CI: 1.08–1.17], women who breastfeed [AOR: 1.17, 95% CI: 1.13–1.20], Scheduled Tribe women [AOR: 1.39, 95% CI: 1.35–1.44], poorest women [AOR: 1.27, 95% CI: 1.22–1.33] and women those who consume fish occasionally [AOR: 1.14, 95% CI: 1.12–1.17] were more likely to be anaemic. Conclusion The significant increase in anaemia among WRA in Aspirational Districts of India is a matter of concern. Given the rise in anaemia among WRA, determinants-based and district-specific measures must be designed and implemented to reduce the prevalence of anaemia among Aspirational Districts of India.

It is essential for teenagers who are going through a period of rapid growth to promptly address anemia since untreated anemia can negatively impact their reproductive health. This literature review investigated the relationship between nutritional and anthropometric status indicators, body composition, and prevalence of anemia in teenage girls. Studies were selected based on the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) criteria. A comprehensive search across multiple databases (PubMed= 409, ScienceDirect= 3153, Scopus= 4, Sage Journals= 358) and manual citation of five articles yielded 3929 articles, of which 630 were excluded for irrelevance, one was inaccessible, and nine articles were included in the study after assessing their eligibility. The review's findings suggest that indicators such as Body Mass Index (BMI) and Mid-Upper Arm Circumference (MUAC) are indicated as initial assessments to screen the nutritional status of adolescent females and estimate their risk of anemia. Only one article has specifically discussed the connection between fat mass and anemia in terms of body composition. The need for studies on anthropometry and body composition-related anemia underscores the need to broaden investigations to gain a more nuanced understanding of this subject. Keywords: anthropometry, body composition, female adolescents, anemia Anemia is a pervasive global health concern that contributes substantially to both morbidity and mortality. 1–3 Women of reproductive age account for up to 31.2% of those affected by anemia. 4 Anemia prevalence among women aged 15–49 years is a key indicator in Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) target 2.2.3, to achieve a 50% reduction in anemia prevalence by 2030. 5 Nevertheless, estimation evaluations indicate that the present rate of anemia reduction is inadequate to attain this objective. 6 Consequently, there is an urgent need to gain a more profound comprehension of anemia and the underlying causes that contribute to its development. Anemia can arise from multiple sources, such as erythropoiesis abnormalities, hemolysis, and blood loss. 7 Nutritional deficit is the primary cause of anemia in erythropoiesis. This deficiency is characterized by a scarcity of vital elements required to synthesize red blood cells, including iron, folic acid, and vitamin B12. 1,8 Iron deficiency is currently the leading cause of anemia globally and has a significant role in the high prevalence of anemia among adolescent girls aged 10–14 years. 1,9 Untreated anemia in teenage girls can have detrimental effects on physical growth and development, impair cognitive ability, and jeopardize a healthy reproductive life cycle. 10,11 Intensive human development occurs primarily during the first twenty years of life. Abstract:Background: Anemia is a significant global public health issue among children aged 6 to 59 months, particularly in low-income countries like Ethiopia. Studies focusing on pastoral communities, especially in the Afar Region, often underestimate the prevalence of anemia in these children. To address this information gap, this study aimed to determine the prevalence of anemia and its associated factors among children aged 6 to 59 months in public hospitals in the Afar Region of northeastern Ethiopia. Method: A hospital-based cross-sectional study was conducted among children aged 6 to 59 months, using systematic random sampling, at public hospitals in the Afar Region from February 28 to April 30, 2023.The data collection tool was adapted from the Ethiopian National Food Consumption Survey and the World Health Organization Infant and Young Child Feeding guidelines. Data entry was performed using EpiData version 4.2 and Anthroplus software for anthropometric measurements. Data analysis was conducted using SPSS version 26. Binary logistic regression models were applied to identify predictors of anemia, with a p-value of ≤ 0.05 considered statistically significant. Result: Among the 306 children aged 6 to 59 months, the overall prevalence of anemia was 46.41 (95 CI: 43.8-48.9 ). Of the 142 anemic children aged 6 to 59 months, 62 (43.66 ) had mild anemia, 60 (42.25 ) had moderate anemia, and 20 (14.08 ) had severe anemia. Key factors associated with anemia included mothers with no formal education, the lowest family monthly income, a family size greater than five, and rural residence. Additionally, a previous diagnosis of parasitic infection, children aged 24-35 months, early weaning, a malaria diagnosis within the past three months, and diarrhea in the last two weeks were significant predictors of anemia in children aged 6 to 59 months. Conclusion: In the current study, anemia in children aged 6 to 59 months was classified as severe and is regarded as a critical public health issue. This suggests that more efforts should be made to significantly decrease anemia by actively involving rural mothers with no formal education and low income who have children aged 6-59 months, focusing on the prevention and management of malaria, diarrhea, and parasitic infections.

Abstract:BackgroundAnemia is a global public health problem but the burden of anemia is disproportionately borne among children in developing countries. Anemia in early stages of life has serious consequences on the growth and development of the children. We examine the prevalence of anemia, possible association between anemia and different socio-economic, demographic, health and other factors among children with ages from 6 to 59 months from the nationally representative 2011 Bangladesh Demographic and Health Survey (BDHS).MethodsData on hemoglobin (Hb) concentration among the children aged 6–59 months from the most recent BDHS (2011) were used. This nationally representative survey allowed a multistage stratified cluster sampling design and provided data on a wide range of indicators such as fertility, mortality, women and child health, nutrition and other background characteristics. Anemia status was determined using hemoglobin level (<11.0 g/dl), and weighted prevalence of childhood anemia along with 95 % confidence intervals were provided. We also examined the distribution of weighted anemia prevalence across different groups and performed logistic regression to assess the association of anemia with different factors.ResultsA total of 2171 children aged 6–59 months were identified for this analysis, with weighted prevalence of anemia being 51.9 % overall- 47.4 % in urban and 53.1 % in rural regions. Results of a multivariable logistic regression analysis showed that, children below 24 months of age (odds ratio, [OR] 3.01; 95 % confidence interval [CI] 2.38-3.81), and those from an anemic mother (OR 1.80; 95 % CI 1.49-2.18) were at higher risk of anemia. Childhood anemia was significantly associated with chronic malnutrition of child, source of drinking water, household wealth and geographical location (defined by division).ConclusionsA high prevalence of anemia among 6–59 months aged children was observed in Bangladesh. Given the negative impact of anemia on the development of children in future, there is an urgent need for effective and efficient remedial public health interventions.

Abstract:Background and purpose: The prevalence of anemia among adolescent girls in Indonesia remains high. Poor nutrition is a risk factor of anemia among adolescent girls, which is likely related to food intake restrictions to achieve a desired body shape (body image), and the habit of drinking tea while eating which can affect the absorption of iron. This study aims to determine the relationship between anemia with body image perception and tea drinking habits among adolescent girls.Methods: This study used a cross-sectional design carried out from March-May 2018, involving girls aged 15-18 years at high schools in Badung District. Two schools were selected from 44 high schools, then a sample of 106 students were selected by systematic random sampling. Data collected included hemoglobin levels measured with hematology autoanalyzer, nutritional status with anthropometric measurements, and data on socio-demographics, socio-economics, tea drinking and eating habits, menstrual pattern, helminthiasis, knowledge and perception of body image with face-to-face individual interviews. Data were analyzed using the Chi square test for bivariate analysis, and multivariate using logistic regressionResults: The prevalence of anemia (hemoglobin <12 g/dL) in adolescent girls was 13.2%. The results of the logistic regression analysis showed that the variables associated with anemia were poor knowledge about anemia with an adjusted odds ratio (AOR)=11.4 (95%CI: 1.6-83.1), no iron supplement consumption (AOR=14.7; 95%CI: 1.9-109.8), negative body image (AOR=30.6; 95%CI: 2.9-321.1), tea drinking habits while eating (AOR=52.2; 95%CI: 4.2-642.9) and excessive menstrual volume (AOR=17.1; 95%CI: 1.6-185.9).Conclusion: Negative perceptions of body image and tea drinking habits while eating increase the risk of anemia among adolescent girls aged 15-18 years. In addition, poor knowledge about anemia, a history of not consuming iron supplements and excessive menstrual volume can also increase the risk. These factors need to be considered when designing policies to reduce anemia among adolescent girls.

Abstract:The complexation equilibria of Fe(III) with resorcylic acid (2,4-dihydroxybenzoic acid, DHB) were studied spectrophotometrically in ethanol-water (4 + 6, v/v) at an ionic strength of 0.1 M NaClO4. The complexation reactions were demonstrated and characterized. A simple, rapid, and sensitive method based on the formation of the Fe(III)-DHB complex at pH 2.5 (lambdamax = 520 nm, epsilon = 0.8 x 10(4) L/mol x cm) was developed for the spectrophotometric determination of Fe(III). The effect of diverse ions on the sensitivity of the proposed method was studied. The Fe-DHB complex was isolated and characterized by both elemental analysis and infrared spectroscopy. The thermal behavior of the complex in dynamic nitrogen gas was studied by thermogravimetric and differential thermogravimetric analysis. Thermal events encountered throughout the course of decomposition were monitored. A computer program was used for regression analysis and for determination of kinetic and thermodynamic parameters from experimental nonisothermal thermogravimetric data. The proposed method was tested by determinations of iron in various synthetic samples and Portland cement materials.

Abstract:The study was undertaken to assess the prevalence of anemia among adolescent girls and adult women, and the importance of different variables on anemia in some rural belts of North Bengal. Body Mass Index (BMI) was calculated and hemoglobin levels of the subjects were measured. It was found that 60.76 % female have normal BMI, 4.49% female were obese and 34.74% showing thinness. The percentages of mild, moderate and severe anemia were respectively 39.49%, 35.00% and 6.73%e. Variables like education, family income, BMI, personal hygiene, worm infection, dietary habit, malaria, iron and folic acid (IFA), symptoms like headache, fatigue, and dyspnoea were significantly related with anemia. The study also revealed that females of tea garden areas of the two districts were suffering more from anemia.
