Abstract:OBJECTIVE To develnp a quantitative method for the determination of seven different components of volatile oil in Elsholtzia blanda,and compare primarily their contents extracted with different methods.METHODS The contents of seven components were analyzed by headspace gas chromatography with INNOWAX capillary column(0.53 mm×30 m,5μm).The column temperature raised by programming,the intial temperature was 60℃,and was raised to 90℃at the rate of 30℃·min~(-1)for 30 min and then was raised to 180℃at the rate of 5℃·min~(-1).The injector temperature was set at 200℃,the detector temperature of FID was at 240℃. RESULTS Seven components were completely separated.The calibration curves ofα-pinene,β-pinene,1,8-cineol,camphor,linalool, bornyl acetate,borneol,were linear within the range of 33～330,32～320,111～1110,238～2380,140～1400,65～650,53～530 mg·L~(-1),the correlation coefficient were 0.9999,0.9998,0.9998,0.9996,0.9997,0.9995,0.9995,and their average recover- ies(n=9)were 96.6%,97.0%,97.8%,99.9%,96.5%,97.4% and 97.1%,respectively.CONCLUSION The method is simple, accurate and sensitive,and can be used for quality control of E.blanda and its further reseach.
Development of a Headspace Solid‐Phase Microextraction Gas Chromatography‐Mass Spectrometry Method to Study Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) Emitted by Lavender Roots

Abstract:A headspace solid‐phase microextraction (HS‐SPME) method combined with gas chromatography‐mass spectrometry (GC‐MS) was developed and optimized for the extraction and the analysis of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from lavandin and fine lavender roots. Optimal parameters to extract volatile molecules from ground and intact roots were determined using a divinylbenzene‐carboxen‐polydimethylsiloxane (DVB/CAR/PDMS) coating fiber at 70°C for 60 min. A total of 99 VOCs, including 40 monoterpenoids, 15 sesquiterpenoids, 1 diterpenoid and 2 coumarins were detected. The main compounds detected in lavandin roots were fenchol, borneol, and coumarin. Performances of the optimized SPME GC‐MS method were evaluated via the comparison of VOC emissions between roots from different cultivars of fine lavender (7713 and maillette) and lavandin (abrial and grosso). Chemometric analysis, using partial least squares‐discriminant analysis (PLS‐DA), suggests fifteen significant features as potential discriminatory compounds. Among them, β‐phellandrene allows discrimination between lavender and lavandin varieties.

Chemometric Identification of Volatile Components in Essential Oils Extracted from Sweet Orange Peels by Different Methods

Abstract:Quantitative descriptive sensory analysis(QDSA),gas chromatography-ion mobility spectrometry(GC-IMS)and Heracles NEO electronic nose(E-nose)combined with chemometrics were used for differential analysis of volatile compounds in essential oils(EOs)extracted from sweet orange peels(blood and navel)using cold pressing(CP),microwave-assisted hydrodistillation(MAHD)or spinning cone column(SCC).The results indicated that significant variations in flavor composition were found among the three EOs.The CP oil had the highest sensory preference with stronger fruity,sweet,and floral aromas.The MAHD oil had stronger fatty,green,and woody aromas,and the SCC oil had a lower aroma intensity.A total of 64 volatile components were identified by GC-IMS,terpenes,alcohols and aldehydes being the major ones,followed by acids,esters and other compounds.The fingerprint indicated that the contents of terpenes in the CP and MAHD oils were significantly higher than that in the SCC oil,whereas the contents of alcohols and aldehydes in the MAHD and SCC oils were significantly higher than those in the CP oil.Based on relative odor activity value(ROAV),β-myrcene and linalool were identified as the major contributors to the flavor of sweet orange EO.Moreover,using GC-IMS combined with partial least square discriminant analysis(PLS-DA)and variable importance in the projection(VIP),13 differential volatile compounds were identified as aroma markers to distinguish among the 6 oils.Additionally,E-nose combined with principal component analysis(PCA)and discriminant factor analysis(DFA)also successfully distinguished among the 6 EOs according to their volatile compounds.

Abstract:Abstract Due to the relative independence from the operational parameters, the linear retention indices (LRIs) are useful tool in gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) qualitative analysis. The aim of the current study was to develop a multiple linear regression (MLR) model for the prediction of LRIs as a function of selected molecular descriptors. Liquid injection GC-MS was used for the analysis of Essential oils (Rose, Lavender and Peppermint) separating the ingredients by a semi-standard non-polar stationary phase. As a result, a sum of 103 compounds were identified and their experimental LRIs were derived relying on reference measurements of a standard mixture of n-alkanes (from C8 to C20). As a next step, a set of molecular descriptors was generated for the distinguished chemical structures. Further, a stepwise MLR was applied for the selection of the significant descriptors (variables) which can be used to predict the LRIs. From an exploit set of over 2000 molecular descriptors, it was found that only 16 can be regarded as significant and independent variables. At this point split validation was applied: the identified compounds were randomly divided into training (85%) and validation (15%) sets. The training set (87 compounds) was used to derive two MLR models by applying i) the ‘enter’ algorithm ( R 2 = 0.9960, RMSЕ = 17) and ii) the ‘stepwise’ one ( R 2 = 0.9958, RMSЕ = 17). The predictive power was assessed by the validation set (16 compounds) as follows i) q 2 F1 = 0.9896, RMSE = 25 and ii) q 2 F1 = 0.9886, RMSE = 26, respectively. The adequateness of both regression approaches was further evaluated. Newly developed headspace-solid phase microextraction (HS-SPME) procedures in combination with GC-MS were used for an alternative analysis of the studied Essential oils. Twelve additional compounds, not previously detected by the liquid sample introduction mode of analysis, were identified for which the values of the significant descriptors were within the working range of the developed MLRs. For the last compounds, the LRIs were calculated and the experimental data was used as an external set for assessment of the regression models. The predictive power for both regression approaches was assessed as follows: Enter RMSE = 41, q 2 F2 = 0.9503 and Stepwise RMSE = 40, q 2 F2 = 0.9521.

Abstract:The determination of volatile compounds is essential for the chemical characterisation of honey's aroma and its correlation to its sensory profile and botanical origin. The present study describes the development, optimization and validation of a new, simple and reliable method for the determination of volatile compounds in honey using headspace solid-phase microextraction combined with gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (HS-SPME-GC-MS). The optimization of the SPME conditions showed that the ratio of honey: water (2:1) and the incubation temperature (60 °C) are the most critical parameters. Gas chromatography was performed with medium polar Varian CP-Select 624 column and the experimental Retention Index for a number of compounds was determined as an additional identification feature for suspect analysis. The simultaneous use of four internal standards chlorobenzene, benzophenone, 2-pentanol and 4-methyl-2-pentanone and matrix matched calibration enhanced method accuracy achieving recoveries 73-114 % and repeatability ranging between 3.9 and 19 % relative standard deviations. Furthermore, the superiority of the HS-SPME to static head space technique was verified exhibiting four-to nine-fold higher sensitivity. Target and suspect screening were applied to 30 Greek honey samples and 53 volatile compounds belonging to different chemical classes, such as alkanes, aldehydes, ketones, alcohols, and esters were identified with quantified concentrations ranging between 3.1 μg kg-1 (Limonene) up to 20 mg kg-1 (Benzeneacetaldehyde). Among the new findings is the detection of Myrtenol in Greek pine honey and 2,3-butanediol in Greek oak honey. The developed analytical protocol can be a valuable tool in order to chemically characterize honey based on the volatile content.

Abstract:A headspace high sorptive extraction (HS-HiSorb) Thermal Desorption-Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (TD-GC-MS) method was developed and optimized for the determination of the volatile profile of extra virgin olive oil (EVOO). The HS-HiSorb extraction parameters of temperature, sample mass, stirring rate, and adsorption time were optimized by applying the one-factor-at-a-time (OFAT) approach. A total of 21 multi-varietal olive oil samples were collected from four different olive mills in Cyprus during the harvesting period 2020–2021. Seventy-six volatile organic compounds (VOCs) were identified and semi-quantified, belonging to several chemical categories such as hydrocarbons (31) three of which are terpenes, aldehydes (22), carboxylic acids (6), ketones (5), esters (4), alcohols (3), ethers (2), furans (2), and others (1). Aldehydes (40.20 %) and hydrocarbons (41.08 %) represented the main components of olive oil's volatile profile. The overall concentrations of VOCs in the samples ranged from 8.73 to 39.81 mg/kg. The HiSorb-TD-GC-MS method was evaluated in terms of repeatability and linearity for selected VOCs. Repeatability was performed at three different concentrations (1, 10, and 100 ppb v ), and the relative standard deviation (RSD) ranged from 2.21 to 15.86 %. The calibration curves of (E)-2-hexenal, 1-penten-3-one, nonanal, and hexanal were developed to evaluate the linearity range. The results were satisfactory, with the correlation coefficient (R 2 ) greater than 0.98. Finally, the limitations of the method are mentioned and discussed.

Abstract:<p>A weighing paper‐assisted magnetic ionic liquid headspace single‐drop microextraction using microwave distillation followed by GC‐MS was successfully developed to determine the essential oil components in lavender. The magnetic ionic liquid 1‐octyl‐3‐methylimidazolium tetrachloroferrate was successfully synthesized and used as the optimal extraction solvent. An aliquote of 9 μL of magnetic ionic liquid could be stably suspended on the weighing paper for long time extraction. The increase of the extractant volume resulted in a significantly enhanced in extracting efficiency of the weighing paper‐assisted magnetic ionic liquid headspace single‐drop microextraction than traditional headspace single‐drop microextraction method. In this experiment, the optimal conditions were 1‐octyl‐3‐methylimidazolium tetrachloroferrate as the extraction solvent, extraction time of 12 min, microwave power of 600 W, cyclohexane as back‐extractant and sample amount of 30 mg. The developed method was successfully applied to analyze 16 lavender samples from three different harvest years. A total of 39 compounds in lavender were identified and the principal component analysis provided a clear separation between those lavender samples harvested in different years. The results indicated that the proposed weighing paper‐assisted magnetic ionic liquid headspace single‐drop microextraction is a novel, fast, simple and sensitive microextration technique for the determination of the essential oil components in lavender.</p><p>This article is protected by copyright. Abstract:Lavender (L. angustifolia Mill.) is an important essential oil-bearing and medicinal plant with high commercial value. Lavender scent components can be derived not only as an essential oil but also as lavender concrete or absolute. The development of reliable analytical methods for origin assessment and quality assurance is of significant fundamental importance and high practical interest. Therefore, a comprehensive chemical profiling of seven industrial samples of Bulgarian lavender absolute (L. angustifolia Mill.) was performed by means of gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC/MS) and gas chromatography with flame ionization detection (GC-FID). As a result, 111 individual compounds were identified by GC/MS, and their quantitative content was simultaneously determined by GC-FID, representing 94.28–97.43% of the total contents of the lavender absolute. According to our results, the main constituents of lavender absolute (LA) are representatives of the terpene compounds (with the dominating presence of oxygenated monoterpenes, 52.83–80.55%), followed by sesquiterpenes (7.80–15.21%) and triterpenoids (as minor components). Coumarins in various amounts (1.79–14.73%) and aliphatic compounds (hydrocarbons, ketones, esters, etc.) are found, as well. The acyclic monoterpene linalool is the main terpene alcohol and, together with its ester linalyl acetate, are the two main constituents in the LAs. Linalool was found in concentrations of 27.33–38.24% in the LA1-LA6 samples and 20.74% in the LA7 samples. The amount of linalyl acetate was in the range of 26.58 to 37.39% in the LA1–LA6 samples, while, surprisingly, it was not observed in LA7. This study shows that the chemical profile of the studied LAs is close to the lavender essential oil (LO), fulfilling most of the requirements of the International Standard ISO 3515:2002.

Abstract:In this work, microwave distillation (MD) assisted by magnetic Fe3O4 hollow microspheres (MFHMs) and headspace solid-phase microextraction (HS-SPME) were combined and developed for determination of essential oil components in dried lavender. The Fe3O4 were used as microwave absorption solid medium for dry distillation of dried lavender. Using the proposed method, isolation, extraction, and concentration of essential oil compounds can be carried out in a single step. The effects of the experimental parameters were investigated. The optimal analytical conditions were fiber coating of 30 μm divinyl benzene/carboxen/polydimethyl siloxane (DVB/CAR/PDMS), microwave power of 600 W, irradiation time of 15 min, and the addition of 5 mg Fe3O4 to the sample. Thirty-nine compounds in the essential oils of lavender were obtained and identified. Relative standard deviation (RSD) values less than 9% show that the present method has good precision. Principal component analysis (PCA) was used to differentiate lavender varieties and to identify discriminant varietal markers. The results showed that the MFHM-assisted MD-HS-SPME is a simple, rapid, reliable, and solvent-free technique for the determination of essential oil components in dried plant materials such as traditional Chinese medicine (TCM).

Abstract:In the present study, headspace solid phase microextraction combined to capillary gas chromatography (HS-SPME-GC) has been applied for the determination of changes in the volatile profile of rose petals (Rosa hybrida, cvs David Austin) following processing (heat treatment and addition as an ingredient to a food product--for example yoghurt). Four SPME fibres at two sampling temperatures (40 and 60 degrees C) with a sampling time of 30 min were examined. Volatile profiles were detected either by FID or/and by olfactometry (ODP-II, Gerstel). Fibre testing was performed using raw rose petals for sampling temperature selection and an 18 characteristic rose volatile standard mixture in water was used to compare fibre performances at the sampling temperature of 60 degrees C. Polydimethylsiloxane-divinylbenzene (PDMS-DVB) fibre at the sampling temperature of 60 degrees C was the most suitable to sample the rose alcohols phenyl ethanol, citronellol, nerol, geraniol and eugenol, as assessed by GC-olfactometry, not only from raw petals, but also from processed rose petals and the food product. PDMS-DVB fibre also showed a desired low affinity to volatiles from yoghurt, which reduces the influence of food matrix on the volatile profile. The method was linear over two orders of magnitude and had satisfactory repeatability, with limits of detection for the rose alcohols ranging from <1 to 10 ng/ml concentration levels.

Abstract:Headspace solid-phase micro-extraction (HS-SPME) is a prevalent technique in metabolomics and volatolomics research. However, the performance of HS-SPME can vary considerably depending on the sample matrix. As a result, fine-tuning the parameters for each specific sample matrix is crucial to maximize extraction efficacy. In this context, we conducted comprehensive HS-SPME optimization for bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF) samples using two-dimensional gas chromatography with time-of-flight mass spectrometry (GC×GC-ToFMS). Our exploration spanned several HS-SPME parameters, including vial size, dilution factor, extraction time, extraction temperature, and ionic strength. The 10 mL vial size, no sample dilution, extraction time of 50 min, extraction temperature of 45 °C, and 40% salt were identified as the optimized parameters. The optimized method was then evaluated by a pair-wise comparison of ten sets of samples. The results revealed that the optimized method yielded an increase of 340% in total peak area and an increase of 80% in total peak number. Moreover, enhancements were observed across nine major chemical classes in both peak area and number. Notably, the optimized method also doubled the number of volatile compounds consistently detected across BALF samples, from 52 to 108.

Abstract:Lavender and lavender oils have been used as traditional herbal medicines for centuries. Nowadays, lavender and its essential oil are valuable materials used in many industries, e.g., food, cosmetics, perfume, sanitary products, and pharmaceuticals. Since the components of valuable oil differ depending on the growing region, these components must be identified to ascertain the oil's quality and potential uses. The essential oil composition was obtained from the stemmed fresh flowers of Kastamonu, Türkiye cultivars of lavandin (Lavandula x intermedia var. Super) via a Clevenger-type hydrodistillation apparatus. Then, the essential oil was analyzed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS), and 14 components were identified. Linalool and linalyl acetate were the main components, with 28.44% and 17.12%, respectively. In this study, we aimed to evaluate our results by comparing them with Pharmacopoeia Europaea and ISO standards to determine the quality of the essential oil and its possible areas of use. The findings of this study showed that lavandin essential oil is a high-quality essential oil as it contains high levels of linalool and is free of camphor. In addition, while the linalool, terpinen-4-ol, and camphor contents of the variety complied with the lavender oil standards set by ISO 3515:2002, the linalyl acetate content was found below this. Due to its high linalool content and lack of camphor, the extracted lavandin oil can be predicted to be suitable for use in the food, beverage, aroma, pharmaceutical, perfume and aromatherapy industries.
Optimized Solid–Liquid Separation of Phenolics from Lavender Waste and Properties of the Dried Extracts

Abstract:Lavender distillation produces huge quantities of solid waste yearly. This waste is usually discarded, resulting in serious environmental issues. However, it still contains residual essential oil and other bioactive compounds. This research reports on the development and comparison of optimized solid–liquid separation methods, i.e., microwave- (MAE) and ultrasound-assisted extraction (UAE) of phenolic compounds from lavender distillation waste. The optimal pretreatment conditions, such as waste moisture content and particle size, were also determined. The extracts were spray- or freeze-dried and the resulting powders were characterized for their physicochemical properties. The majority of the original phenolic compounds in lavender were found in the leachate fraction after distillation (61%), whereas 43% was found in the solid waste. Drying of the solid waste before extraction affected the process efficiency. UAE led to a higher phenolic content and greater antioxidant properties compared to MAE. Drying (spray or freeze) the extracts did not significantly affect their phenolic content, whereas the use of maltodextrin as a drying agent improved the drying process yield, especially when using the freeze-drying method. It is concluded that valorization of lavender distillation wastes can be achieved via an integrated process consisting of a green extraction method and a consequent drying process that results in a stable bioactive powder.

LC-MS Identification and Quantification of Phenolic Compounds in Solid Residues from the Essential Oil Industry

Abstract:Plant solid residues obtained from the essential oil industry represent a rich source of phenolic compounds with bioactive properties to be used in the food and pharmaceutical industries. A selective and sensitive liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS) method was developed for the simultaneous determination of phenolic compounds in solid residues of the Lamiaceae family plants. A total of 48 compounds can be separated within 35 min by using the Poroshell-120 EC-C18 column, and a gradient mobile phase of 0.1% formic acid and acetonitrile with flow rate of 0.5 mL/min; salicylic acid was used as internal standard. The calibration curves showed good linearity in the tested concentration range for each analyte (R2 > 0.9921), while recoveries ranged from 70.1% to 115.0% with an intra-day and inter-day precision of less than 6.63% and 15.00%, respectively. Based on the retention behavior, as well as absorption and mass spectra, 17 phenolic acids, 19 flavonoids and 2 phenolic diterpenes were identified and quantified in the solid residues obtained by distillation of six aromatic plants: oregano, rosemary, sage, satureja, lemon balm, and spearmint. The method constitutes an accurate analytical and quality control tool for the simultaneous quantitation of phenolics present in solid waste residues from the essential oil industry.

Abstract:Lavender (Lavandula angustifolia Miller or Lavandula officinalis Chaix) is an ethnopharmacological plant commonly known as English lavender. Linalool and linalyl acetate are putative phytoactives in lavender essential oil (LEO) derived from the flower heads. LEO has been used in aroma or massage therapy to reduce sleep disturbance and to mitigate anxiety. Recently, an oral LEO formulation was administered in human clinical trials designed to ascertain its anxiolytic effect. However, human pharmacokinetics and an LC–MS/MS method for the measurement of linalool are lacking. To address this deficiency, a rapid and sensitive liquid chromatography–tandem mass spectrometry (LC–MS/MS) method was developed for the analysis of linalool in human serum. Prior to the analysis, a simple sample preparation protocol including protein precipitation and liquid–liquid extraction of serum samples was created. The prepared samples were analyzed using a C18 reversed-phase column and gradient elution (acetonitrile and water, both containing 0.1% formic acid). A Waters Xevo TQ-S tandem mass spectrometer (positive mode) was used to quantitatively determine linalool and IS according to transitions of m/z 137.1→95.1 (tR 0.79 min) and 205.2→149.1 (tR 1.56 min), respectively. The method was validated for precision, accuracy, selectivity, linearity, sensitivity, matrix effects, and stability, and it was successfully applied to characterize the oral pharmacokinetics of linalool in humans. The newly developed LC–MS/MS-based method and its application in clinical trial serum samples are essential for the characterization of potential pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic interactions.

Abstract:Essential oils are vital constituents of oil-bearing plants. However, their screening still demands harvesting of the plant for laboratory analysis. We report herein a simple, rapid and robust headspace bubble-in-drop microextraction screening technique (BID-SPME) requiring only small amounts of plant material. The optimised method uses 0.5 g of the crushed plant leaves sample obtained in a 2 mL capped chromatography vial, heated to 55 °C and sampled with 2 μL heptadecane in a Hamilton gastight syringe equilibrated for 15 min exposed to the headspace volume. The method was applied to three plants, Pinus radiata, Tagetes minuta and Artemisia afra, which are known for their essential oil content. The method was able to extract at least 80% of the oil constituents in such abundance that they could be easily annotated using the gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC–MS) mass spectral libraries. The major volatile organic compounds (VOCs) detected included tagetone, terpinen-4-ol, ocimenone, caryophyllene, dihydrotagetone, terpinolene and artemisia ketone, just to mention a few, at different concentrations in different plants. Importantly, these annotated VOCs were also reported in other studies in the same and even different plants, extracted using normal steam distillation and importantly those reported in the literature for different extraction techniques.
Effectiveness of Liquid-Liquid Extraction, Solid Phase Extraction, and Headspace Technique for Determination of Some Volatile Water-Soluble Compounds of Rose Aromatic Water

Abstract:Steam distillation is used to isolate scent of rose flowers. Rose aromatic water is commonly used in European cuisine and aromatherapy besides its use in cosmetic industry for its lovely scent. In this study, three different sampling techniques, liquid-liquid extraction (LLE), headspace technique (HS), and solid phase extraction (SPE), were compared for the analysis of volatile water-soluble compounds in commercial rose aromatic water. Some volatile water-soluble compounds of rose aromatic water were also analyzed by gas chromatography mass spectrometry (GCMS). In any case, it was concluded that one of the solid phase extraction methods led to higher recoveries for 2-phenylethyl alcohol (PEA) in the rose aromatic water than the liquid-liquid extraction and headspace technique. Liquid-liquid extraction method provided higher recovery ratios for citronellol, nerol, and geraniol than others. Ideal linear correlation coefficient values were observed by GCMS for quantitative analysis of volatile compounds ( r 2 ≥ 0.999 ). Optimized methods showed acceptable repeatability (RSDs 95%). For compounds such as α -pinene, linalool, β -caryophyllene, α -humulene, methyl eugenol, and eugenol, the best recovery values were obtained with LLE and SPE.

Abstract:The rock-eel, Pholis, and guppy, Lebistes, adapted to fresh or saltwater were exposed to low concentrations of unnatural ions or transport inhibitors including thiocyanate, potassium and ouabain, which caused cytological alterations in the chloride cells of the gills. Some of the other substances used caused generalized damage to intracellular membranes. Highly ordered geometric arrays of the tubular reticulum were produced under certain conditions. The conditions of the experiments suggest that the tubular reticulum plays a role in ionic segragation and that the normal configuration of the reticulum is dependent on the ionic composition of the intracellular milieu.

Abstract:Lavender (Lavandula angustifolia Mill.) is a widely utilized aromatic plant, with the economic value of its essential oil (EO) largely dependent on its aroma. This study investigated the differences in volatile organic compounds (VOCs) within the EOs of three species of lavender (H70-1, French blue, Taikong blue) in Ili region from 2019 to 2023 with the combination of sensory evaluation, gas chromatography-ion mobility spectrometry (GC-IMS), and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). The EO from Taikong blue lavender exhibited greater stability in VOC composition compared to the other two varieties. Orthogonal Partial Least Squares Discriminant Analysis (OPLS-DA) effectively distinguished the aromas of the three EOs aroma. Combining odor activity value (OAV) and variable importance in projection (VIP) values identified five VOCs crucial for discriminating among the three lavender EO types. This study provides theoretical support for the cultivation and commercialization of lavender as an industrial crop, as well as for quality control of EO production in the Ili region.
Streptokinase and reduced plasma viscosity: A second benefit

Abstract:The purpose of this pilot study on a small cohort of patients (n = 13) with acute myocardial infarction receiving systemic streptokinase (STK) thrombolytic therapy was to measure the decrease in plasma viscosity concomitant with fibrinogen depletion. The treatment group was compared with a similar control group not given thrombolytic therapy. Serial relevant blood studies were undertaken in both groups for a period of 6 d. In the treatment group, a maximum reduction in plasma viscosity of 17 ± 9% (mean ± S.D.) was achieved during the first 24 h. Plasma viscosity remained below baseline for the 6‐d duration of the study. Conversely, in the control group, the plasma viscosity rose to a maximum of 19 ± 14% (mean ± S.D.) over the period of study, parallelling the rise in plasma fibrinogen as an acute‐phase reactant. Correlation studies between viscosity and plasma fibrinogen were strongly positive with mean values of r of 0.74 and 0.66 in the STK‐treated group and controls, respectively. We conclude that the benefit of systemic STK treatment may in part be due to reduced myocardial workload and oxygen consumption at a critical time, and improved microvascular circulation, consequent on reduced plasma viscosity.
