Abstract:Manganese (Mn) is a common contaminant with a strict limit value in drinking water, which is traditionally removed by virtue of manganese oxides (MnOx) filter, in which the performance and stability depend on its ripening. Herein ozone (O3) is employed as a pre-oxidant to ripen MnOx filter for the removal of Mn from drinking water, with KMnO4 as a control. The O3 pre-oxidation (OPO) assisted filter presents more excellent performance in Mn removal during the whole start-up period and achieves a significant shortening of the start-up time from 74 days to 41 days as well as ripening time from 108 days to 80 days compared with the KMnO4 preoxidation (KPO) filter. The O3 facilitates the generation of active vernadite via the direct oxidation of manganese ions (Mn2+) and promotes the evolution of deposited MnOx by assembling Mn2+ from water during the 120-day reactions. The vernadite nanosheets with low crystallinity (16.23-30.35 %) and abundant Mn(III) species (44.19-48.48 %) in deposited MnOx formed by OPO act as the active components to promote the adsorption and subsequent oxidation of Mn2+, thus enhancing Mn removal from water. The OPO costs less than KPO in completing the start-up of MnOx filter and avoids the chemicals pollution. This work establishes a novel strategy to accelerate the start-up and ripening of MnOx filter for efficient removal of Mn from drinking water.

Abstract:Catalytic ceramic nanofiber membranes (Mn@CNMs) were prepared by anchoring Mn2O3 nanoparticles on the pits of attapulgite (APT) nanofibers via an impregnation and in-situ precipitation method. An integrated catalytic ozonation/membrane filtration process applying Mn@CNM was employed to degrade sulfamethoxazole (SMX) and the removal achieved up to 81.3% during a 7-h continuous filtration. The reactive oxygen species (ROS) quenching and radical detection experiments were conducted to determine the contribution of O-1(2), (OH)-O-center dot and O(2)(center dot- )towards the catalytic degradation of SMX. Moreover, Mn@CNM exhibited wide applicability for real water matrix and the total removal of various kinds of emerging contaminants in real hospital wastewater reached up to 98.5%. The excellent performances of Mn@CNM were attributed to the nano-confinement effect in the membrane layer. First, anchoring Mn2O3 nanoparticles on the pits of the APT surface suppressed the growth and aggregation of nanosized Mn2O3, providing abundant reactive sites for catalytic ozonation. Second, the interlaced APT nanofibers formed nano-sized network structures, where ROS and SMX were confined in close vicinity and ROS have more chances to attack SMX. This work provides a promising strategy for the preparation of catalytic ceramic membrane with high catalytic efficiency for degradation of emerging contaminants in water.
Engineered Nanoconfinement Accelerating Spontaneous Manganese-Catalyzed Degradation of Organic Contaminants

Abstract:Manganese(III/IV) oxide minerals are known to spontaneously degrade organic pollutants in nature. However, the kinetics are too slow to be useful for engineered water treatment processes. Herein, we demonstrate that nanoscale Mn3O4 particles under nanoscale spatial confinement (down to 3-5 nm) can significantly accelerate the kinetics of pollutant degradation, nearly 3 orders of magnitude faster compared to the same reaction in the unconfined bulk phase. We first employed an anodized aluminum oxide scaffold with uniform channel dimensions for experimental and computational studies. We found that the observed kinetic enhancement resulted from the increased surface area of catalysts exposed to the reaction, as well as the increased local proton concentration at the Mn3O4 surface and subsequent acceleration of acid-catalyzed reactions even at neutral pH in bulk. We further demonstrate that a reactive Mn3O4-functionalized ceramic ultrafiltration membrane, a more suitable scaffold for realistic water treatment, achieved nearly complete removal of various phenolic and aniline pollutants, operated under a common ultrafiltration water flux. Our findings mark an important advance toward the development of catalytic membranes that can degrade pollutants in addition to their intrinsic function as a physical separation barrier, especially since they are based on accelerating natural catalytic pathways that do not require any chemical addition.

Enhanced Coagulation with Mn(III) Pre-Oxidation for Treatment of Micro-Polluted Raw Water

Abstract:Mn(III) oxidation technology has attracted increasing interest in recent years because of its fast decontamination kinetics and second-pollution-free characteristic. Whether it can be used as a pre-oxidation step to enhance conventional coagulation process remains to be evaluated. Herein, an Fe-coagulation/sedimentation process combined with Mn(III) pre-oxidation (Mn(III)+C/S), hypochlorite pre-oxidation (Cl2+C/S), and permanganate pre-oxidation (PM+C/S) was applied to treat simulated micro-polluted raw water. The removal performance of routine water quality indices (turbidity, dissolved organic carbon, total nitrogen, nitrate-nitrogen, ammonia-nitrogen, Pb(II), and Cr(VI)) and the emerging pollutants (acesulfame, carbamazepine, bisphenol S, and nano-ZnO) created by these three processes were researched. The mechanism of how Mn(III) pre-oxidation influences C/S was explored by identifying the transformation products of Mn(III), measuring the timely variation of flocs’ zeta potential and size, and scanning flocs’ micromorphology. Compared to Cl2+C/S and PM+C/S, Mn(III)+C/S exhibited its superiority in removing dissolved organic carbon (72.9%), total nitrogen (31.74%), and emerging pollutants (21.78%–93.49%). The enhanced removal of these contaminants by Mn(III)+C/S found its explanation in the strong oxidation power of Mn(III) and the multiple roles of in-situ formed MnO2 (e.g., flocculation core, adsorption co-precipitant, and densification agent). The acute toxicity tests confirmed that water treated by Mn(III)+C/S did not show a significant change in the associated toxicity. The findings of the present study indicate that Mn(III) oxidation technology shows great potential as an alternative to pre-oxidation technology of waterworks.

Abstract:Achieving adequate manganese removal during water treatment is a challenging process. This study aimed to assess the effectiveness of gravity driven ceramic membrane (GDCM) filtration in the elimination of manganese from surface water. The impact of membrane pre-modification with birnessite and molecular weight cut-off on long-term water treatment efficiency was investigated by assessing filtration units with 300 kDa virgin membrane (300 kDa-blank), 300 kDa membrane pre-coated with manganese oxides (300 kDa-MnOx), and 15 kDa virgin membrane (15 kDa-blank). The results of 300 kDa-blank and 300 kDa-MnOx indicated that depositing manganese oxides (produced via ozone (O3) oxidation) prior to water treatment was conducive to ripening of cake layer which played a major role in Mn removal. Reducing membrane molecular cut-off from 300 to 15 kDa also significantly reduced permeate Mn concentration, achieving a removal efficiency of 75% at the end of the trial (highest of all the units). Relative to 300 kDa-blank, the greater manganese removals in the other two systems can be attributed to 1) the long hydraulic retention times resulting from the higher membrane resistance, and 2) the higher abundance of biologically produced Birnessite materials in the cake layers for manganese oxidation. Raman analysis and X-ray diffraction analysis showed that 15 kDa-blank achieved the highest level of Birnessite production and most cake materials featured a flower-like structure and relatively small size (as shown under a scanning electron microscope and Energy Dispersive X-Ray Spectroscopy element mapping analysis), suggesting a higher surface area for Mn oxidation.

Abstract:Sufficient and sustainable manganese(II) removal is a challenging task to prevent Mn-related drinking water discoloration problems. This study investigated Mn(II) removal by granular activated carbon (GAC) filtration under various conditions. The results showed that biological GAC filter columns could reduce Mn(II) from 400 μg/L to 10 μg/L after a short ripening period, while sand filter columns did not show evident Mn(II) removal function. Water quality changes, pretreatment with NaClO and chemogenic MnOx coating on GAC media surface did not influence the Mn(II) removal capacity of GAC filter columns. 16S rRNA gene sequencing showed that the abundance of potential Mn(II)-oxidizing bacteria in the GAC media was similar to that in the sand media. However, qPCR results indicated that GAC media colonized dramatically more biomass than sand media, resulting in highly effective Mn(II) removal by GAC filter columns. Under chlorinated conditions, GAC filtration underperformed sand filtration in Mn(II) removal, although activated carbon has been reported to be capable of catalyzing Mn(II) oxidation by chlorine. Fast chlorine decay in GAC filter columns made it hard to sustain chemical Mn(II) oxidation and thus led to less Mn(II) removal. This study highlighted the advantage of biological GAC filtration over sand filtration in Mn(II) removal.

Abstract:Manganese is widely distributed in the natural environment, and its presence in drinking water poses a risk to human health. In this study, an integrated pre-deposited powdered activated carbon (PAC) and manganese oxide (MnO x ) bio-functional layer of inorganic origin was coupled with gravity-driven ceramic membrane (GDCM) reactor. The study aims to investigate the effects of the membrane pore size and functional layer integrity on the Mn 2+ removal and flux. The results reveal that the average Mn 2+ removal efficiency of the large pore size membranes (300 kDa and 0.45 μm) was lower (75 % – 78 %) compared to those with smaller pores (15 kDa and 50 kDa) (87 % – 88 %) during long-term operation. Such differences are attributed to a period of manganese leakage before the PAC-MnO x matured in large-pore membrane units and a longer residence time in small-pore membranes. The functional layer leaded to reversible fouling, which was more prominent in membranes with larger pores (contributing to 93 % of total resistance) than those with smaller ones (ranging from 51.7 % to 61.9 %). Although the damaged functional layer resulted in occasional high Mn 2+ concentrations in the effluent, it did not significantly impact long-term flux development. Optical coherence tomography (OCT), in conjunction with COMSOL analysis, non-destructively evaluate biofilm formation process and indicate a homogeneous flow field and mass transfer in the "dual layers" (active film layer and ceramic membrane layer) of the GDCM. The presence of manganese-oxidizing bacteria ( Hyphomicrobium, Reyranella, and Pseudomonas ) in the GDCM reactor was verified using confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM) and high-throughput sequencing. Additional material characterization revealed that a portion of the PAC-MnO x exhibited characteristics of birnessite, with autocatalytic oxidation of Mn 2+ , and that Mn (III) and Mn (IV) were the primary species in MnO x , which exhibited excellent catalytic oxidation and adsorption capabilities for Mn (II), respectively. Overall, the developed PAC-MnO x GDCM system shows great promise in efficiently removing manganese and producing water of desired quality, thereby holding potential in applications across several sectors of advanced water treatment processes.

Abstract:High concentration of iron and manganese is still one of the common problems in groundwater. In this work, an integrated aeration-manganese sand filter-ultrafiltration (AMU) process was proposed to investigate the form of iron and manganese oxides and its autocatalytic effect in removing iron and manganese. The pourbaix diagram was used to characterize the degree of iron and manganese oxidation. The dependence of redox potential and atomic composition on manganese sand was then studied. The results showed that the proposed AMU process could not only remove 100 % ferrous and 90 % manganese ions due to the increased redox potential by 2 mV after manganese sand filter, but also reduce the membrane fouling due to the retention effect of manganese sand coated films formed on the surface of manganese sand. The upper layer of manganese sand coated film contained 21.86 wt% Fe whereas the lower layer contained 19.31 wt% Mn compared with that of 13.77 wt% Fe and 4.87 wt% Mn for the virgin one, respectively. The needle crystals Fe2O3 and unshaped crystals MnOx found on both the manganese sand coated films and membrane foulants indicated the anti-fouling effect of ultrafiltration membrane through the complete oxidation of iron and manganese. The proposed AMU process allowed the simultaneous oxidation and the following membrane fouling mitigation of the whole process for iron and manganese removal from groundwater.

Abstract:OBJECTIVES Paan chewing is a recognized risk factor for oral cancer in the Asian population. However, there is currently little evidence about the intergenerational psychosocial transmission of paan chewing in South Indian families. We investigated the association between parental and participant's paan chewing in a South Indian population. METHODS A subset of data was drawn from a hospital-based case-control study on oral cancer, the HeNCe Life study, conducted at Government Dental and Medical Colleges of Kozhikode, South India. Analyses were based on 371 noncancer control participants having diseases unrelated to known risk factors for oral cancer. Demographics, behavioral habits (e.g., paan chewing, smoking), and indicators of socioeconomic position (SEP) of both participants and their parents were collected with the use of a questionnaire-based interview and a life grid technique. Unconditional logistic regression assessed odds ratios (OR) and 95% confidence intervals (95% CI) for the associations between parental and participant's paan chewing, adjusted for confounders. RESULTS Over half of the participants were males (55.2%), and the mean age of participants was 59 (SD = 12) years. After adjusting for age, religion, parents' SEP, parents' education, smoking and alcohol consumption, and perceived parenting behavior, we observed that maternal paan chewing and paternal paan chewing were significantly associated with the participant's paan chewing ([OR = 2.40, 95% CI = 1.11-5.21] and [OR = 3.05, 95% CI = 1.48-6.27], respectively). CONCLUSIONS Intergenerational psychosocial transmission of the habit of paan chewing could occur through shared sociocultural or environmental factors.
A single-atom manganese nanozyme mediated membrane reactor for water decontamination

Abstract:Single-atom nanozymes possess high catalytic activity and selectivity, and are emerging as advanced heterogeneous catalysts for environmental applications. Herein, we present the innovative synthesis and characterization of a single-atom manganese-doped carbon nitride (SA-Mn-CN) nanozyme, integrated into a polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) membrane for advanced water treatment applications. The SA-Mn-CN nanozyme demonstrates high peroxidase-like activity, efficiently catalyzing the oxidation of 3,3',5,5'-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) and generating reactive oxygen species (ROS) for effective antibacterial action. Notably, the SA-Mn-CN/PVDF membrane showcases enhanced water permeability, superior antifouling properties, and ultra-fast degradation kinetics of organic pollutants. Mechanistic studies reveal that the nanozyme selectively generates Mn(IV)-oxo species via peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation, crucial for the efficient oxidation processes. Our integrated membrane system effectively removes (within 1 min, > 92 % removal) a variety of organic micropollutants in continuous-flow operations, demonstrating excellent stability and minimal manganese leaching. Compared to conventional advanced oxidation process (AOPs)/membrane system, the SA-Mn-CN/PVDF/PMS system holds the advantages of high catalytic activity and selectivity for generation of reactive species, wide working pH range (pH3-11) and excellent stability and reusability under the backwashing conditions. The developed device-scale AOPs/membrane system was proven to be effective in bacterial inactivation and pollutants degradation, verifying the vast application potential of the SA-Mn-CN/PVDF membrane for practical water decontamination. This work pioneers the development of enzyme-mimicking nanozyme membranes, offering a sustainable and high-performance solution for wastewater treatment, and sets a new benchmark for the design of nanozyme-based catalytic membranes in environmental applications.
Pre-depositing PAC-birnessite cake layer on gravity driven ceramic membrane (GDCM) reactor for manganese removal: The significance of stable flux and biofilm

Abstract:Water laden with dissolved manganese ions presents a challenge to water treatment processes and drinking water quality. To address manganese removal, a gravity driven ceramic membrane filtration system was developed; the membrane was pre-modified by depositing freshly formed birnessite type manganese oxide (MnOx) attached on powdered activated carbon (PAC) on the membrane. The result indicated that PAC-MnOx coupled with ceramic membrane rejection enabled the enrichment of manganese oxide bacterial (MnOB) (103 MPN/mL) on the membrane, facilitating biogenetic manganese formation. The dominant MnOB (i.e., Hyphomicrobium) was identified using microbial community analysis. Intermittent dosage of PAC-MnOx at start-up period was likely to generate a cake layer effectively contributing to autocatalytic oxidation; The flux stablised at 41 L/(m2·h) after only 15-d operation, and the permeate of manganese was 0.089 mg/L. After 30-d operation, laser scattering particle analyzer (LASP) revealed that the particles (70.9 μm) within biofilm of gravity driven ceramic membrane (GDCM) grew larger compared with those present initially (48.5 μm) due to the newly formed biogenic MnOx attached to the carrier PAC, indicated by Raman analysis and X-ray Diffraction (XRD) analysis. Mn(III) as the predominant valence in MnOx conferred its outstanding catalytic oxidative capacity, as evidenced by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis. SEM-EDS mapping demonstrated that a uniform flower-like birnessite structure was formed on the PAC surface, facilitating the transformation of MnOx to newly-formed birnessite on the vicinity of GDCM. Taking advantage of PAC and birnessite, the gravity driven filtration system developed in this study is anticipated to be an effective water treatment technique, particularly suitable for small footprint decentralized water supply sanitation.

Abstract:Traditional reduction or oxidation processes generating one−component free radicals face challenges in deep dechlorination and mineralization of chlorophenols from wastewater. Herein, an efficient electrocatalytic process has been developed, which couples atomic H* reduction with reactive oxidation species ( • OH and 1 O 2 ) oxidation on a bifunctional cathode for 4 −chlorophenol (4 −CP) removal. The N − doped carbon nanotubes encapsulated manganese nanoparticles was fabricated as cathode, which could generate atomic H* , initiating nucleophilic hydrodechlorination in presence of confined MnO sites. Subsequently, electrophilic oxidation by generating mainly 1 O 2 on confined Mn 7 C 3 sites and • OH on confined MnO sites, facilitating the oxidative processes. Experimental results and theory calculations demonstrated that reductive dechlorination and oxidative mineralization processes could mutually promote each other, resulting in an enhancement factor of 2.90. At pH 7, this process achieved 100 % removal for 4 −CP, 84 % dechlorination, 76 % total organic carbon (TOC) removal and low energy consumption (0.76 kWh g −1 TOC ) within 120 min. Notably, TOC for chlorophenols containing Cl substituents at different positions and real lake water containing 4 −CP could be almost completely removed. This research establishes confined non−noble bifunctional active sites that synergistically enhance reductive dechlorination and oxidative degradation processes, holding significant treatment potential for application in deep mineralization of organochlorine from water/wastewater.

Abstract:The regeneration of assimilable organic carbon (AOC) during chlorinated disinfection in drinking water treatment poses serious risks to human health. However, conventional ozonation processes in drinking water treatment plants cannot effectively solve this problem. In this study, Mn-based heterogeneous catalytic ozonation, namely the O3/Mn@CMs process, was employed to overcome this bottleneck. The O3/Mn@CMs process exhibited much better elimination performance for AOC precursors than the O3 process. The removal rate of AOC precursors reached approximately 80 % during the O3/Mn@CMs process at an ozone dosage of 5 mg/L and a retention time of 5 min. Two fluorescence components, tyrosine-like components and terrestrial-based humic acids, were identified as the main components of the AOC precursors and were effectively removed by over 50 % during the O3/Mn@CMs process. Moreover, the O3/Mn@CMs process could more significantly enhance the saturation of dissolved organic matter than the O3 process but exhibited a limited effect on the redox states. The O3/Mn@CMs process effectively enhanced the removal of N- and S-containing compounds with CHON compounds (46.49 %) as the dominant precursors, while CHO compounds were the main precursors (62.09 %) in the O3 process. Oxygen addition reactions were the major reaction pathways occurring in both the O3 and O3/Mn @CM processes. In most cases, compared to the O3 process, the O3/Mn@CMs process could more thoroughly oxidize DOM, especially N- and S-containing compounds, into more products via more diverse reaction pathways. This work provides a deep molecular insight into the water purification mechanism of enhanced heterogeneous catalytic ozonation and would be beneficial for the optimization of ozonation-related processes for advanced drinking water treatment.
Highly Efficient Removal of Arsenite from Water by Using Renewable Sub-5 Nm Zr-Mn Binary Oxides Confined Inside Gel-Type Ion Exchanger

Abstract:Efficient removal of As(III) from groundwater remains an urgent but still challenging task. The X-Mn (X = Fe, Zr, Al ... ) binary oxide nanoparticles enable simultaneous oxidation and sequestration of As(III), yet facing the challenges in facile synthesis of the ultra-small nanoparticles with extraordinary decontamination reactivity, and in effective regeneration of oxidation capability. Herein, we prepared a novel nanocomposite Zr-Mn@N201 by conducting stepwise precipitation of hydrated oxides of zirconium (HZO) and manganese (HMO) inside the commercial gel-type anion exchanger N201, i.e., the quaternary ammoniated poly(styrene-co-divinylbenzene) bead. Owing to restriction of nanopores, the HZO/HMO inside N201 possessed an ultra-small size around 4.78 nm. The kinetics and spectroscopic results suggested that As(III) was transformed into As(V) by HMO prior to adsorption onto HZO, and the negatively charged HMO captured most of the produced Mn2+ ions. Alkaline treatment could regenerate Zr-Mn@N201 through simultaneously desorbing As(V) and transforming Mn2+ into HMO again. During a 10-cyclic adsorption-regeneration assay, Zr-Mn@N201 could steadily reduce As(III) from 500 mu g/L to < 10 mu g/L with negligible HMO loss (< 0.3%) in each run. In fixed-bed assays, the integration of HMO increased the effective treatment amounts of the Zr-Mn@N201 column toward the realistic groundwater by -11.5 times over the single nano-HZO (i.e., HZO@N201) column, reaching to -4600 bed volume with < 1% HMO loss.
Synergistic effects of prokaryotes and oxidants in rapid sand filters treatment of groundwater versus surface water: Purification efficacy, stability and associated mechanisms

Abstract:Effective elimination of manganese (Mn) and ammonium (NH4+-N) from drinking water is still challenging. Utilizing oxidants to improve the simultaneous removals of Mn and NH4+-N from rapid sand filter (RSF) systems has been extensively studied. However, the prokaryotes containing in the water geochemical properties greatly affected the RSF performance. In this study, groundwater and micro-polluted surface water were used to compare with/without potassium permanganate (KMnO4) assistant on the contaminants removals and system stability. Results showed that KMnO4 reduced the start-up period of RSF for treating groundwater and surface water to 20 and 41 days, respectively, with excellent Mn removal rates (>97%). The relative abundance of efficient ammonia-oxidizing bacteria (Nitrospira) in RSF treated groundwater without KMnO4 was higher than that in RSFs treated micro-polluted surface water or with KMnO4, resulting in a higher NH4+-N removal rate of the former (∼57%). Notably, KMnO4 and prokaryotes synergistically contributed to the amorphous structure, mixed phases (buserite, MnO2 and birnessite) and mixed-valence Mn system of active manganese oxides (MnOx), whose abundant oxygen vacancies and highly reactive Mn(III) favored the autocatalytic oxidation of Mn, while NH4+-N removal relied more on bacteria actions. Additionally, prokaryotes enriched the bacterial community diversity, leading to a more stable RSF system when facing hydraulic loading shock. This paper provided new insight into the synergistic effect of KMnO4 and prokaryotes on Mn and NH4+-N eliminations in RSFs and was helpful for practical applications.

Abstract:Structurally defective UiO-66 has garnered significant interest due to its remarkable performance in the domains of adsorption and catalysis. In this research, the successful synthesis of Mn-doped defective UiO-66 (Mn 1 D 40 UiO-66) was confirmed by XRD and FTIR characterization. More than 95% of As( III ) ( C 0 = 1.1 mg L −1 ) was removed in 1 h ( C catalyst = 0.2 g L −1 , C PMS = 0.1 mM). Compared with the original UiO-66, when coupled with peroxymonosulfate (PMS), Mn 1 D 40 UiO-66 accelerated the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS), resulting in an increase in As( III ) removal efficiency by about 50%. XPS spectra and EXAFS spectra indicated that As( III ) adsorbed in the Mn 1 D 40 UiO-66/PMS system was fully oxidized to As( V ) and the adsorption was attributed to As–O–Zr coordination. Several types of ROS (·OH, SO 4 ̇ − , and O 2 ̇ − ) generated by PMS activation acted collectively on As( III ) oxidation, so a single ROS scavenger did not have a marked inhibitory effect on As( III ) removal. In addition, the system maintained efficiency over a broad pH range (3–11), and retained an arsenic removal rate higher than 89.8% even in the presence of high concentrations of several anions (SO 4 2− /Cl − /NO 3 − , 10 mM). Meanwhile, 99.3% of the As( III ) could be removed by Mn 1 D 40 UiO-66 at extremely high humic acid concentrations (100 mg L −1 ). Due to the excellent stability of the material, only trace amounts of metal leaching were detected (Mn ion ≤ 3 μg L −1 ) during the whole experiment. The whole oxidation and adsorption process demonstrated excellent anti-interference ability and stability. This study shows the great potential of transition metal doped defective metal–organic frameworks in the field of adsorption and catalysis and provides a novel idea for the high-efficiency management of As( III ) pollution in water environments.

Abstract:Endocrine disrupting compounds (EDCs) in the aquatic systems are of growing concerns that could undermine drinking water safety. In this study, manganese (III) oxide (Mn2O3) based catalytic ceramic membrane (CCM) was developed for the activation of peroxymonosulfate (PMS), and its applicability has been tested in degrading the ten different EDCs (including bisphenol analogs (BPs)) in drinking water. The CCMs were synthesized at different calcination temperatures i.e., 850, 950, and 1150 °C. Optimal performance of CCMs/PMS was achieved at a higher degree of calcination. The CCMs/PMS has shown a potential to effectively degrade the EDCs at higher concentrations (mg/L) to trace levels (ng/L). The CCMs/PMS system adopted a non-radical pathway of degrading the EDCs through the extensive generation of singlet oxygen (1O2), as confirmed using quenching experiments and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy. 1O2-based oxidation process showed special selectivity for the decontamination of phenols and bisphenols. The long-term performance of CCMs/PMS showed good stability in degradation of the EDCs in drinking water, also with efficient mineralization (TOC removal >55%) and negligible release of Mn (0.004 wt%Mn/min). CCMs/PMS system also showed high potential in improving water quality by reducing the disinfection byproducts (DBPs) formation potential, highest recorded for bromodichloromethane (CHCl2Br, 100%) and lowest for dichloroacetic acids (TCAA, ∼50%). The study provided a highly efficient catalytic ceramic membrane based advanced oxidation process (AOPs) for effective degradation multiple of EDCs in drinking water, and the findings of this work can be a baseline for full-scale water treatment applications.

Abstract:In areas affected by arsenicosis, zerovalent iron (ZVI)/sand filters are extensively used by households to treat groundwater, but ZVI surface passivation and filter clogging limit their arsenic (As) removal performance. Here we present a magnetic confinement-enabled column reactor coupled with periodic ultrasonic depassivation (MCCR-PUD), which efficiently and sustainably removes As by reaction with continuously generated iron (oxyhydr)oxides from ZVI oxidative corrosion. In the MCCR, ZVI microparticles self-assemble into stable millimeter-scale wires in forest-like arrays in a parallel magnetic field (0.42-0.48 T, produced by two parallel permanent magnets), forming a highly porous structure (87 % porosity) with twice the accessible reactive surface area of a ZVI/sand mixture. For a feed concentration of 100 μg/L As(III), the MCCR-PUD, with a short empty bed contact time (1.6 min), treated ca. 7340 empty bed volume (EBV) of water at breakthrough (10 μg/L), 9.4 folds higher than that of a ZVI/sand filter. Due to the large interspace between ZVI wires, the MCCR-PUD effectively prevented column clogging that occurred in the ZVI/sand filter. The high water treatment capacity was attributed to the much enhanced ZVI reactivity in the magnetic field, sustained through rejuvenation by PUD. Furthermore, most of As was structurally incorporated into the produced iron (oxyhydr)oxides (mostly ferrihydrite) in the MCCR-PUD, as revealed by Mössbauer spectroscopy, X-ray absorption spectroscopy, and sequential extraction experiments. This finding evinced a different mechanism from the surface adsorption in the ZVI/sand filter. The structural incorporation of As also resulted in much less As remobilization from the produced corrosion products during aging in water, in total ∼1 % in 28 days. Furthermore, the MCCR-PUD exihibted robust performance when treating complex synthetic groundwater containing natural organic matter and common ions (∼3700 EBV at breakthrough). Taken together, our study demonstrates the potential of the magnetic confinement-enabled ZVI reactor as a promising decentralized As treatment platform.

Abstract:This study focused on two Mn-oxide-containing adsorbents for As(III) removal, namely granular iron-manganese composite oxide (GFMO) and granular iron-manganese-copper composite oxide (GFMCO). The comparative experiments results demonstrated that GFMCO exhibited superior performance in As(III) removal and a more obvious Mn(II) release compared to GFMO. Furthermore, this study explored the approaches for the control of manganese release during As(III) removal, identifying sodium hypochlorite (NaClO) oxidation followed by manganese sand filtration as the most effective method for capturing released Mn(II) in water. Manganese sand columns effectively captured released Mn(II) from effluent, while chlorine oxidation significantly improved manganese removal. The positive effect of copper on Mn(II) removal by oxidants was also assessed. In addition, the solution pH significantly impacted manganese removal efficiency, with alkaline conditions being the most conducive. Moreover, the presence of sulfite notably accelerated manganese release. Characterization of the adsorption columns indicated that the manganese element undergoes release, migration, and speciation transformation within the filter systems, where redox reactions, adsorption processes, and autocatalytic oxidation processes were all involved. Not only NaClO oxidation but also autocatalytic oxidation with newly-formed Mn oxides contributed to the transformation Mn(II) to Mn oxides, promoting the stabilization of Mn element in manganese sand filtration columns. This study provides valuable insights into the stability of Mn-oxide-containing adsorbents for As(III) removal in the filter system and highlights on engineered approaches to control the transformation and migration of released manganese ions.

Abstract:Low cost, green, regenerable catalyst for persulfate activation is the popularly concerned topic for the degradation of persistent organic micropollutants in drinking water. In this work, natural montmorillonite (MMT) saturated with Fe(III) ions was used to activate peroxymonosulfate (PMS) for the degradation of atrazine in raw drinking water. Results showed that the adsorption of atrazine was quickly completed within 1 min and the percentage degradation was finally increased up to 94.1% in 60 min. The d001-spacing of MMT was enlarged to 2.91 nm at the most by Fe(III) saturation. Atrazine was adsorbed into the nanoscale interlayer of Fe(III)-saturated montmorillonite (Fe-MMT), where the Fe(III)/Fe(II) cycle was sustainably realized through the accelerated transformation of electrons between Fe(III) and PMS. Meanwhile, the in-situ generated Fe(II) accelerated the decomposition of PMS to further proceed the degradation of atrazine through the oxidation of HO• and SO4•- radicals. This nanoconfined effect of PMS activation by Fe(III) was further confirmed through the degradation of various micropollutants in the backgrounds of river water. The selective catalytic oxidation of micropollutants through PMS activation was attributed to the 2D mesoporous structure of Fe-MMT, inhibiting the interlayer adsorption of larger molecular backgrounds (humic acids etc.). Fe(III)-saturated montmorillonite (Fe-MMT) provided a feasible and scalable method of PMS activation by Fe(III) for the degradation of micropollutants in drinking water.
