Abstract:While electrochemical water splitting is one of the most promising methods to store light/electrical energy in chemical bonds, a key challenge remains in the realization of an efficient oxygen evolution reaction catalyst with large surface area, good electrical conductivity, high catalytic properties, and low fabrication cost. Here, a facile solution reduction method is demonstrated for mesoporous Co3O4 nanowires treated with NaBH4. The high‐surface‐area mesopore feature leads to efficient surface reduction in solution at room temperature, which allows for retention of the nanowire morphology and 1D charge transport behavior, while at the same time substantially increasing the oxygen vacancies on the nanowire surface. Compared to pristine Co3O4 nanowires, the reduced Co3O4 nanowires exhibit a much larger current of 13.1 mA cm‐2 at 1.65 V vs reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE) and a much lower onset potential of 1.52 V vs RHE. Electrochemical supercapacitors based on the reduced Co3O4 nanowires also show a much improved capacitance of 978 F g‐1 and reduced charge transfer resistance. Density‐functional theory calculations reveal that the existence of oxygen vacancies leads to the formation of new gap states in which the electrons previously associated with the Co‐O bonds tend to be delocalized, resulting in the much higher electrical conductivity and electrocatalytic activity.

Abstract:Co-Mo-O (Co1.2MoO4.2 center dot 1.3H(2)O)/Ni3S2 nanosheet arrays were in-situ grown directly on Ni foam (NF) by a facile two-step hydrothermal reaction, in which the untrathin Co-Mo-O nanosheets are connected to each other into a three-dimensional (3D) porous hierarchical architecture with Ni3S2 entrapped on the underneath Ni support. The resulting Co-Mo-O/Ni3S2/NF exhibits an excellent electrocatalytic activity for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in KOH solution, which yields a 50 mA cm(-2) of OER current density at an overpotential of 0.29 V, outperforming the state-of-the-art noble RuO2 (eta 50 = 0.42 V), Co-Mo-O/NF (eta 50 = 0.33 V) and Ni3S2/NF (eta 50 = 0.31 V). And it demonstrates a high specific capacity of 340 mAh g(-1) at 2 mA cm(-2) with good capability (82.1% of the retention at 32 mA cm(-2)) in basic solution when used as supercapacitor electrode, which is superior to those of Co-Mo-O/NF (183 mAh g(-1)) and Ni3S2/NF (70 mAh g(-1)). The outstanding electrochemical performance of Co-Mo-O/Ni3S2/NF is associated with the synergistic effect of the individual components as well as the nanosheets directly grown on Ni conducting support with more active sites exposed. Furthermore, Co-Mo-O/Ni3S2/NF displays good durability in 12 h-electrolysis experiment for OER and 10000 charge-discharge cycles. It is expected to benefit from Ni3S2 entrapped by the protective layer of 3D porous Co-Mo-O nanosheet arrays, which not only can provide channel for electrolyte ion to pass through, but also improve the stability of Ni3S2. In addition, the fabricated Co-Mo-O/Ni3S2/NF//Activated carbon (AC) asymmetrical supercapacitor shows an ultra-high energy density of 57.9 Wh kg(-1) at a power density of 1.1 kW kg(-1). Abstract:It is an enormous challenge to construct the cheap and effective multifunctional electrocatalysts for energy storage and conversion applications. Herein, a ZIF-67 derived Co4S3/Ni3S2@MoS2 core-shell nanosheet arrays were successfully developed on nickel foam via a simple two-step hydrothermal vulcanization method for electrocatalytic water splitting and supercapacitors. For overall water splitting, CNM 0.5 required the overpotentials of 96 and 269 mV at 10 mA cm−2 and 100 mA cm−2 for HER and OER in 1 M KOH. The dual-electrode electrolytic cell assembled from CNM 0.5 required only 1.447 V at 10 mA cm−2, and had nearly 100% Faraday efficiency and long-term stability (40 h). When used as the electrode for supercapacitors, CNM 0.5 had a large specific capacitance of 1238 F g−1 at 1 A g−1 current density and exceptional durability (85% retention after 2000 cycles). The ASC device assembled with CNM 0.5 provided the high-energy density of 41.2 W h kg−1 and long cycle-life (87% after 2000 cycles). The unique core-shell morphology with abundant active reactive edge sites would be beneficial for charge reduction and the volume shrinking/swelling during the rapid charge/discharge process. The well-ordered and vertically aligned nanosheet arrays possessed good conductivity and small interface resistance, which would facilitate the electron transfer and electrolyte penetration, ion insertion and de-intercalation.

Abstract:The exploration for low-cost bifunctional materials for highly efficient overall water splitting has drawn profound research attention. Here, we present a facile preparation of Mo-P dual-doped Co/oxygen-deficient Co3O4 core-shell nanorods as a highly efficient electrocatalyst. In this strategy, oxygen vacancies are first generated in Co3O4 nanorods by lithium reduction at room temperature, which endows the materials with bifunctional characteristics of the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). A Co layer doped with Mo and P is further deposited on the surface of the Co3O4-x nanorods to enhance the electrocatalytic hydrolysis performance. As a result, the overpotentials of HER and OER are only 281 and 418 mV at a high current density of 100 mA cm-2 in 1.0 M KOH, respectively. An overall water electrolytic cell using CoMoP@Co3O4-x nanorods as both electrodes can reach 10 mA cm-2 at 1.614 V with outstanding durability. The improvement is realized by the synergistic effect of oxygen vacancies, Mo/P doping, and core-shell heterostructures for modulating the electronic structure and producing more active sites, which suggests a promising method for developing cost-effective and stable electrocatalysts.

Abstract:A hybrid ZnCo2O4@CoMoO4 heterogeneous structure deposited onto nickel foam was synthesized via a two-step hydrothermal process. The results demonstrate that the hybrid architecture exhibits excellent electrochemical performance, including the specific capacitance of 1040C g−1 at 1 A g−1 for hybrid structures, high energy density of 87.3 Wh kg−1 at a power density of 2700 W kg−1 for an as-assembled supercapacitor and excellent cycle stability with a capacity retention of 99% undergoing 8000 charge-discharge for the device. Moreover, it also shows favorable electrocatalytic activity with low overpotentials of 237 mV at 20 mA cm−2 for oxygen evolution reaction and 114 mV at 10 mA cm−2 for hydrogen evolution reaction, and low cell voltage of 1.54 V at 10 mA cm−2 for overall water splitting. In addition, the stability maintains well for the long-term use of 13 h. We believe that this hybrid ZnCo2O4@CoMoO4 heterogeneous structure could be a promising candidate for future energy storage and conversion.

Abstract:Electrochemical water splitting is deemed as an important and sustainable technology for hydrogen generation. Searching for low-cost and efficient electrocatalysts toward hydrogen/oxygen evolution reaction (HER/OER) is of great importance for commercial application of water electrolysis. Cobased phosphides and oxides/hydroxides are extensively developed as HER and OER electrocatalysts, respectively. Herein, a novel strategy is developed to prepare a self-supported N-doped CoP ultrathin nanosheets (namely N-Co-Ni-P/Ni) for HER and Fe-doped CoOOH nanosheets (namely Fe-Co-OOH/Ni) for OER based on the MOF-derived Co(OH)(2) nanosheets, along with short lateral size caused by Co-MOF confinement growth. The self-supported N-Co-Ni-P demands an overpotential of 50 mV to deliver a current density of 10 mA cm(-2) in alkaline conditions (1M) for HER The self-supported Fe-Co-OOH nanosheet electrocatalysts also exhibit high catalytic activity for OER. The experimental measurements demonstrate that the increased positive charge of Co atoms caused by the introduction of N atoms can significantly enhance HER performance. Moreover, the large surface areas, high exposure of active sites, and effective mass transport channels are also favorable to improved catalytic activity. The electrolyzer with N-Co-Ni-P/Ni and Fe-Co-OOH shows excellent activity with an electrolysis voltage of 1.51 Vat 10 mA cm which is superior to the Pt(-)//Ir/Ta (+) electrolyzer (1.62 V).

Abstract:Cobalt oxide (Co 3 O 4 ) electrode materials have tremendous properties for supercapacitors, such as being environmentally friendly, having a high surface area, being low cost, and having high theoretical specific capacitance (3560 Fg âˆ’1 ). However, its poor electronic conductivity restricts the performance of the practical application. Doping transition metal ions into the host materials is an effective method to improve conductivity and enhance storage capacity. In this research work, we studied Mo-doped Co 3 O 4 nanostructure electrodes synthesized using the electrodeposition technique. The integrated material samples were characterized by XRD, SEM with EDAX, XPS, FTIR, Raman spectra, UVâ€“visible, and BET for their structure, morphology, composition, optical, and surface area properties. The 2Â mM Mo-doped Co 3 O 4 electrode exhibits excellent electrochemical pseudocapacitive properties. The optimized Mo 2 -doped Co 3 O 4 shows a maximum specific capacitance of 1674 Fg âˆ’1 at 10Â mAÂ cm âˆ’2 current density in 1Â M KOH electrolyte solution. Finally, the asymmetrical hybrid supercapacitor device (AsHScD) Mo 2 -Co 3 O 4 //rGO) demonstrates the highest power density of 159.0 KWKg âˆ’1 and maximum energy density of 13.80 WhKg âˆ’1 with a long-term stability of 95Â % up to 2000Â cycles. The Mo 2 -Co 3 O 4 electrode is a promising candidate material for a charge-storage hybrid supercapacitor in an aqueous 1Â M KOH electrolyte.

Abstract:To develop precious-metal-free bifunctional catalysts for overall water splitting, ultraeven Mo-doped CoP composites (Mo-CoP) have been fabricated by an in situ phosphorization protocol using CoMo-layered double hydroxide (CoMo-LDH) as the precursor. The ordered arrangement of cations in the CoMo-LDH could be easily phosphored and generate the ultraevenly dispersed Mo element within the CoP structure, resulting in the excellent bifunctional catalyst for overall water splitting. The hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) catalytic activities of the composites present an increase first and then a decreasing tendency with increased Mo doping content. Among all the Mo-doped CoP materials, the composite with a Mo/Co mole ratio of 1/2.3 presents the highest HER activity and stability in acidic conditions. At the current density of −10 mA·cm–2 in 0.5 M H2SO4, the overpotential is only 116 mV. In addition, the composite also presents excellent HER and OER performance under alkaline conditions. The overpotential is 118 mV for HER and 317 mV for OER at 10 mA cm–2 in 1 M KOH. It requires a cell voltage of 1.7 V to achieve a current density of 10 mA·cm–2 and maintains a stable water-splitting current for at least 24 h, which is superior to most reported alkaline media. Abstract:Ni(OH) 2 with a high theoretical specific capacity is recognized as a potential cathode material for aqueous supercapacitors. However, the utilization and cycling durability of the Ni(OH) 2 -based electrodes are still unsatisfactory. In this work, integrated electrodes of Mo-doped Ni(OH) 2 nanosheets deposited on carbon cloth (Mo–Ni(OH) 2 /CC) were developed for supercapacitor and methanol electro-oxidation. Mo doping creates an abundance of oxygen vacancies which boosts the adsorption of electrolyte on the electrode surface and suppresses the irreversible phase transition during cycling. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal that Mo doping promotes the intrinsic conductivity of Ni(OH) 2 , and consequently improves the utilization of Ni(OH) 2 . The optimal Mo–Ni(OH) 2 -10/CC electrode exhibits a specific capacity of 419.6 mA h g −1 (1510.7 C g −1 or 3021.3 F g −1 ) at 1 A g −1 , higher than the theoretic specific capacity of single-electron transfer, and 2.84 times that of the Ni(OH) 2 /CC electrode (147.7 mA h g −1 ). The Mo–Ni(OH) 2 -10/CC-containing hybrid supercapacitor (HSC) presents an outstanding energy density of 82.6 W h kg −1 at a power density of 800.0 W kg −1 and cycling stability with capacitance retention of 95.2 % after 10,000 cycles at 16 A g −1 . Moreover, Mo–Ni(OH) 2 -10/CC as a non-precious electrocatalyst displays a superior methanol electro-oxidation performance to Ni(OH) 2 /CC. This work provides an applicable strategy and insights into the material design for high-power supercapacitor and methanol electro-oxidation.

Abstract:Specific capacity, HER, OER, and Overall Water Splitting of Mn0.2Ni0.8Co2O4 electrode and their FE‐SEM images, respectively. Summary Synthesizing triple transition metal oxide (TTMO) is an extraordinary strategy to develop electrodes for efficient energy storage and conversion devices, owing to their unique nanostructure with high porosity and specific surface area. The cobalt‐based mixed‐valence oxides have attracted great attention due to their facile synthesis, low cost, and excellent electrochemical performance. However, less attention is paid to investigating the effect of different substitutions on the physico‐chemical properties of TTMO. In this study, nanoparticles (NPs) decorated ultrathin Ni1‐xMnxCo2O4 nanoflakes (NPs@NFs) are synthesized by tuning the molar ratio between Mn and Ni via facile deep eutectic solvents (DESs) method. Unique and highly porous NPs@NFs nanostructures aid to increase the overall surface area of the materials, whereas Mn, Ni, and Co ions participate in their redox‐active capacity, improving the electrochemical activity of the material. This Ni0.8Mn0.2Co2O4 hybrid nanostructure exhibited excellent supercapacitive performance with a high specific capacity (Cs) of 761 mAh g−1 at a higher current density of 30 mA cm−2 and superior cycling retention of 92.86% after 10 000 cycles. Further, a hybrid asymmetric supercapacitor (Ni0.8Mn0.2Co2O4//AC) device exhibited an extended potential window of 1.5 V, which results in an ultrahigh energy density of 66.2 W kg−1 by sustaining a power density of 1519 Wh kg−1. The electrocatalytic activity of the optimized Ni0.8Mn0.2Co2O4 shows the outstanding performance toward hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) (150 mV/ 161 mV dec−1) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) (123 mV/47 mV dec−1) with a lower voltage of 1.51 V (@10 mA cm−2) for overall water splitting, with outstanding stability up to 25 hours. These results indicate that chemically synthesized ultrathin NPs@NFs‐like nanostructure is a capable electrode for multiple applications, such as supercapacitors, and overall water splitting. Highlights Facial synthesis of nanoflakes of Ni1‐XMnXCo2O4 thin films by a DES method. Fully decorated NPs on the interconnected NFs provided a higher surface area. Nanostructures with a maximum specific capacity of 761 mAh g−1 at 30 mA cm−2, with excellent stability of 92.86%. The solid‐state device shows an excellent energy density of 66.2 Wh kg−1 at a power density of 1519 W kg−1. The assembled Ni0.8Mn0.2Co2O4 /Ni‐based water splitting exhibited low voltage (1.51 V) and superb stability up to 25 hours.

Abstract:Transition-metal sulfides are regarded as one of the most potential materials for the supercapacitor and electrocatalyst, and the holey alignments of the active materials with effective availability is highly required due to the rich active sites and convenient electrolyte access for surface reaction. Herein, we report the growth of CoNi2S4 nanoparticles with high mass loading (14.8 mg cm-2) on the surface of carbon cloth (CC) by a two-step hydrothermal sulfuration. The CoNi2S4/CC electrode has the holey characteristic containing rich active sites for electrolyte access, and shows a high areal capacitance of 10.87 C cm-2 at 10 mA cm-2 and a prominent coulombic efficiency. Furthermore, the as-assembled hybrid supercapacitor delivers a high areal capacitance of 3.16 F cm-2, an energy density of 1.42 mWh cm−2 at a power density of 9.0 mW cm−2, and a high capacitance retention of 92.5% after 20,000 cycles. As an electrocatalyst, CoNi2S4/CC electrode possesses an excellent hydrogen evolution reaction (overpotential of 84 mV at 10 mA cm−2) and oxygen evolution reaction (228 mV at 10 mA cm−2) activities in 1.0 M KOH solution. Moreover, the overall water splitting electrolyzer assembled by CoNi2S4/CC exhibits a low cell voltage (1.51 mA cm-2) and a high durability.

Abstract:Catalytic water splitting into H2 is a prospective way to alleviate the fossil fuels crisis. To date, α-MoO3 nanostructures show the low activity in water electrolysis reaction because of their poor conductive ability. The rational design of α-MoO3 with tunable electron structure is greatly desired to promote electrocatalytic performance. Herein, we utilize a facile one-pot method to prepare MoO3/N, P co-doped carbon sheets (MoO3/NPC). Carbon sheets are regulated by N and P doping, which are generated by thermal pyrolysis of melamine phosphate. Accordingly, the partial reduction of MoO3 nanosheets is elaborated by coordinative unsaturated Mo5+ sites. Experimental investigations show that MoO3 nanosheets are anchored on N and P co-doped carbon sheets. The electrochemical studies indicate that MoO3/NPC presents excellent water oxidation reactivity with 231 mV@10 mA/cm2, which is superior to RuO2 (283 mV). In comparison to α-MoO3 nanosheets (204 mV), the enhanced water reduction reactivity is achieved on MoO3/NPC with 144 mV at 10 mA/cm2. Serving as the bi-functional catalysts to drive water splitting, MoO3/NPC exhibits a low voltage of 1.59 V at 10 mA/cm2. Our work highlights that heteroatom engineering could mediate the electron state of MoO3 and thereby accelerate water splitting rate.

Self‐Supported Oxygen and Molybdenum Dual‐Doped Cobalt Phosphide Hierarchical Nanomaterials as Superior Bifunctional Electrocatalysts for Overall Water Splitting

Abstract:The electrocatalytic water splitting is considered as the attractive way for the clean and sustainable energy production. Herein, a series of self‐supported oxygen and molybdenum dual‐doped cobalt phosphides grown on Ni foam (O,Mo‐CoP/NFs) were prepared. The O,Mo‐CoP/NFs exhibited 3D hierarchical morphologies including urchin‐like nanostructures assembled with nanorods and nanoflowers assembled with ultrathin nanosheets. The optimized O,Mo‐CoP/NFs‐2 nanoflowers owned the superior electrocatalytic performance for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER), with an overpotential of only 59 mV at 10 mA cm‐2 for HER and 301 mV overpotential at 100 mA cm‐2 for OER, respectively. Moreover, the O,Mo‐CoP/NFs‐2 nanoflowers exhibited efficient overall water splitting as low as 1.66 V for 100 mA cm−2 with outstanding long‐term stability, even superior to the commercial Pt−C/NF and RuO2 /NF system. The superior activity of self‐supported O,Mo‐CoP/NFs‐2 nanoflowers was attributed to the synergistic effect of O and Mo dual doping, which promoted its intrinsic catalytic activity, and its particular morphology of self‐supported 3D hierarchical nanoflowers, which could expose more catalytic sites and enable facile gas escape. Moreover, the device of overall water splitting can be powered by a single AA battery or a 1.5 V solar cell, showing its great potential for practical applications.

Abstract:Synthesizing low-cost and highly efficient bifunctional electrocatalysts for hybrid supercapacitors and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is critically essential for the progress of energy storage and conversion devices. Therefore, a novel, inexpensive and superhydrophilic bifunctional NiCuMn@TiN nanosheet supported on iron foam (NiCuMn@TiN/IF) is successfully designed and fabricated via spent cupronickel (SCN) as Ni and Cu precursor by a facile one-step electrosynthesis routine. With adding nano titanium nitride (TiN), the obtained NiCuMn@TiN/IF composite electrode not only possesses a large superhydrophilic surface that enhances ion/electron transfer efficiency and provides numerous activity sites for the electrochemical reaction but also achieves efficient recovery of metal resources using the secondary resource SCN as soluble anode further reduces the cost of electrode preparation. And since the synergistic effect of large specific surface area and superhydrophilicity, the NiCuMn@TiN/IF delivers a high specific capacity of 22.5 F cm −2 at 10 mA cm −2 in 3 M KOH and also illustrates superior OER activity with an extremely low overpotential (286 mV) and remarkable durability at a high current density of 100 mA cm −2 in 1 M KOH. This research provides a solid foundation for the large-scale preparation of low-cost and high-performance non-precious metal bifunctional electrocatalysts for the commercial development of electrochemical supercapacitors and electrochemical water-to-hydrogen conversion technology.

Abstract:The fabrication of high-performance and stable electrocatalysts for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is of importance for sustainable water-splitting technologies. Herein, the cobalt (Co) nanoparticles and molybdenum carbide (Mo2C) heterostructures anchored N-doped carbon (Co/Mo2) was designed as bifunctional electrocatalyst for overall water splitting via a simple pyrolysis approach for metal organic frameworks (MOFs) precursor. This composite shows a remarkable performance for HER and OER with a small overpotential of 121 mV and 311 mV at 10 mA cm−2, respectively. When the optimized electrocatalyst was employed as both anode and cathode for overall water splitting in a two-electrode system, the electrolyzer achieves a low cell voltage of 1.67 V at 10 mA cm−2 in 1 M KOH, as well as a superior and stable long-time operation of 30 h. The promising hybrid material demonstrates excellent electrocatalysis performance due to effective combination of the best of both worlds: Mo2C with remarkable HER performance and Co nanoparticles with excellent OER activity. The Mo2C possesses strong hydrogen binding energy and Co exhibits prominent electrical conductivity, thus the construction of heterostructures achieves more active sites with different functions and significantly boosts HER and OER process. The novel and effective synthesis strategy provides new insights into the design of outstanding non-noble metal bifunctional electrocatalysts for overall water splitting.

Abstract:The development of designing and searching inexpensive electrocatalysts with high activity for both hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is significant to enable water splitting as a future renewable energy source. Herein, we synthesize a new CoP(MoP)-CoMoO3 heterostructure coated by a N-doped carbon shell [CoP(MoP)-CoMoO3@CN] via thermal decomposition and phosphatizing of the CoMoO4·0.9H2O nanowires encapsulated in N-doped carbon. At 10 mA·cm-2, this CoP(MoP)-CoMoO3@CN nanocomposite exhibits superior electrocatalytic activity at low overpotentials of 296 mV for OER and 198 mV for HER in alkaline media. More importantly, we achieve a current density of 10 mA·cm-2 at 1.55 V by using this CoP(MoP)-CoMoO3@CN as both cathode and anode for overall water splitting. This promising performance could be due to the high activity of CoP(MoP)-CoMoO3 and the good conductivity of the external mesoporous N-carbon shell, which makes the CoP(MoP)-CoMoO3@CN nanowires a competitive alternative to noble-metal-based catalysts for water splitting.
One-Dimensional CoMoP Nanostructures as Bifunctional Electrodes for Overall Water Splitting

Abstract:As high-quality substitutes for conventional catalysts, the bifunctional catalytic properties of the coating of transition-metal-based materials are pivotal for improving water-splitting efficiency. Herein, cobalt-molybdenum bimetallic phosphide nanofibers (CoMoP NFs) were synthesized via a series of facile strategies, which are divided into pyrolysis electrospun PAN and metal salts, to obtain one-dimensional morphology and a gas-solid phosphating precursor. The obtained CoMoP NFs catalyst has superior catalytic activity performance in 1M KOH. Serving as an oxygen evolution reaction (OER) catalyst, the electrode of the CoMoP NFs affords different kinds of current densities at 50 mA cm−2 and 100 mA cm−2, with low overpotentials of 362 and 391 mV, respectively. In addition, the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) performance of the CoMoP NFs mainly shows when under a low overpotential of 126 mV, which can deliver a current density of 10 mA cm−2. In order to further detect the stability of the catalyst, we used multiple cyclic voltammetry and chronopotentiometry tests for OERs and HERs, which maintain performance and carry a current density of 10 mA cm−2 for longer. As an integrated high-performance bifunctional electrode for overall water splitting, the CoMoP NFs only require 1.75 V@10 mA cm−2 for 40 h. This work highlights a facile method to create an electrocatalyst with fiber nanostructures which possesses excellent activity as an alkaline electrolyte.

Abstract:Catalysts can efficiently facilitate important electrochemical processes such as hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER). In current work, Co3O4-MoSe2@C nanocomposite has been prepared by a convenient method via combining hydrothermally synthesized MoSe2@C and Co3O4. When catalyzing the HER and OER, the catalyst features low overpotentials of 144 mV and 360 mV (both at 10 mA cm-2 current density in 1 M KOH), respectively. Additionally, it can also serve as the cathode in the lithium-oxygen battery (LOB) and the device shows a low charging-discharging overpotential of 1.50 V with a stable performance over 200 cycles at current density of 1000 mA g−1. Density functional theory (DFT) simulation further proves that introducing Co3O4 in the system effectively reduces the energy for water adsorption and hydrogen adsorption in the HER while decreases the free energy change of O* + OH- → HOO* + e- step in the OER process, shedding light on the design and synthesis of novel multifunctional electrocatalysts for energy conversions.
