Abstract:Designing low-cost and highly efficient bifunctional electrocatalysts for compatible integration with the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) for overall water splitting is critical but challenging. Herein, mutually beneficial Co3O4@MoS2 heterostructures were adopted to efficiently balance both HER and OER performance by improving the sluggish kinetics. These heterostructures synergistically favoured the reduction of the energy barrier of the initial water dissociation step and optimization of the subsequent H adsorption/desorption for MoS2 in alkaline HER. Moreover, the adsorption of oxygen intermediates was enhanced for Co3O4 in the OER process. As a result, the Co3O4@MoS2 heterostructures showed excellent overall water splitting performance with a low overpotential and Tafel slope.

Abstract:Construction of heterogeneous interfaces with dual active components to synergistically promote both hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is an effective strategy for facilitating electrochemical water splitting, but the appropriate active component regulation via simple synthesis procedures is still challenging. Herein, the Co and Co2Mo3O8 active components are screened to construct effective heterogeneous interfaces and successfully integrated on Ni foam by thermal reduction of cobalt molybdate precursor. And this bifunctional electrode (Co/Co2Mo3O8/NF) required overpotentials of only 164 and 360 mV to drive the 100 mA cm-2 for HER and OER in alkaline media, respectively. Theoretical calculations showed that the electron transfer occurred from Co to Co2Mo3O8 at the interface, then the formed interfacial cobalt atoms with deficient electron were beneficial for water activation, and reduced energy barrier of water dissociation under the synergistic effect of Co2Mo3O8. Notably, the alkaline electrolyzer based on symmetric Co/Co2Mo3O8/NF electrodes generated 100 mA cm-2 at a voltage of only 1.75 V, surpassing commercially available precious-metal Pt/RuO2-based catalysts.

Abstract:The fabrication of high-performance and stable electrocatalysts for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is of importance for sustainable water-splitting technologies. Herein, the cobalt (Co) nanoparticles and molybdenum carbide (Mo2C) heterostructures anchored N-doped carbon (Co/Mo2) was designed as bifunctional electrocatalyst for overall water splitting via a simple pyrolysis approach for metal organic frameworks (MOFs) precursor. This composite shows a remarkable performance for HER and OER with a small overpotential of 121 mV and 311 mV at 10 mA cm−2, respectively. When the optimized electrocatalyst was employed as both anode and cathode for overall water splitting in a two-electrode system, the electrolyzer achieves a low cell voltage of 1.67 V at 10 mA cm−2 in 1 M KOH, as well as a superior and stable long-time operation of 30 h. The promising hybrid material demonstrates excellent electrocatalysis performance due to effective combination of the best of both worlds: Mo2C with remarkable HER performance and Co nanoparticles with excellent OER activity. The Mo2C possesses strong hydrogen binding energy and Co exhibits prominent electrical conductivity, thus the construction of heterostructures achieves more active sites with different functions and significantly boosts HER and OER process. The novel and effective synthesis strategy provides new insights into the design of outstanding non-noble metal bifunctional electrocatalysts for overall water splitting.

Abstract:Developing well-performing and stable bifunctional electrocatalysts is of great importance for efficient green hydrogen production through water electrolysis. Herein, a three-dimensional self-supported CoMoS3.13/FeS2/Co3S4 on carbon paper (FeCoMoS/CP) heterostructure with interconnected nanosheets for overall water splitting was fabricated by a facile hydrothermal method followed by vulcanization treatment. The FeCoMoS/CP heterostructure with high structural integrity and more accessible active sites can effectively optimize the electronic structure through component regulation to achieve enhanced catalytic activity. Significantly, the FeCoMoS/CP required overpotentials of 257 mV at 50 mA cm-2 for OER and 280 mV at 20 mA cm-2 for HER. Importantly, the assembled FeCoMoS/CP||FeCoMoS/CP alkaline electrolyzer achieved a superior cell voltage of 1.48 V at 10 mA cm-2 with superb long-term stability, which implies a remarkable electrocatalytic performance of the FeCoMoS/CP heterostructure for overall water splitting. This work provides an applicable route for synthesizing high-performance bifunctional catalysts toward water electrolysis.

Abstract:To address issues of global energy sustainability, it is essential to develop highly efficient bifunctional transition metal-based electrocatalysts to accelerate the kinetics of both the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Herein, the heterogeneous molybdenum and vanadium codoped cobalt carbonate nanosheets loaded on nickel foam (VMoCoCOx@NF) are fabricated by facile hydrothermal deposition. Firstly, the mole ratio of V/Mo/Co in the composite is optimized by response surface methodology (RSM). When the optimized composite serves as a bifunctional catalyst, the water-splitting current density achieves 10 mA cm-2 and 100 mA cm-2 at cell voltages of 1.54 V and 1.61 V in a 1.0 M KOH electrolyte with robust stability. Furthermore, characterization is carried out using field emission scanning electron microscopy-energy dispersive spectroscopy (FESEM-EDS), high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal that the fabricated VMoCoCOx@NF catalyst synergistically decreases the Gibbs free energy of hydrogen and oxygen-containing intermediates, thus accelerating OER/HER catalytic kinetics. Benefiting from the concerted advantages of porous NF substrates and clustered VMoCoCOx nanosheets, the fabricated catalyst exhibits superior electrocatalytic performance. This work presents a novel approach to developing transition metal catalysts for overall water splitting.

Abstract:Searching for high‐efficiency nonprecious bifunctional electrocatalysts for both hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is paramount for the advancement of water electrolysis technologies and the associated renewable energy devices. Modulation of electronic structure of an electrocatalyst via heterointerface engineering represents an efficient strategy to improve its electrocatalytic performance. Herein, we demonstrate a feasible hydrothermal synthesis of a novel heterostructured catalyst comprising CoS 2 nanocubes and vertically aligned MoS 2 nanosheet arrays directly grown on flexible and conductive carbon cloth (CC) substrate (denoted as CoS 2 /MoS 2 @CC hereafter). Thanks to the elaborate interface engineering and vertically aligned nanosheet arrayed architecture, the resultant self‐supported CoS 2 /MoS 2 @CC electrode possesses enriched exposed active sites, modulated electronic configuration, multidimensional mass transport channels and outstanding mechanical strength, thereby affording exceptional electrocatalytic performances towards the HER and OER in alkaline electrolyte with overpotentials of 71 and 274 mV at 10 mA cm ‐2 , respectively. In addition, a two‐electrode electrolyzer assembled by CoS 2 /MoS 2 @CC requires a cell voltage of 1.59 V at 10 mA cm ‐2 with nearly 100% Faradic efficiency and remarkable durability, showing great potential for scalable and economical water electrolysis.

Abstract:The rational construction of highly efficient electrocatalysts comprising multiple components with distinctive bifunctionalities is still a challenge for the practical application due to their sluggish kinetics for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Here, a series of cobalt-molybdenum alloy nanorods encapsulated in N-doped carbon shells () is synthesized via an in-situ carbonization-reduction method using CoMoO4 as the precursor. The high conductivity, strain-induced effect, and synergistic interactions between N-doped carbon and bimetallic cores endow the optimized catalyst with outperforming catalytic performances for HER and OER in alkaline solution with low overpotentials (98 mV for HER and 336 mV for OER at 10 mA cm-2), as well as high durability. The overall water splitting device using as bifunctional catalyst could possess a low voltage of 1.67 V to drive a current density of 10 mA cm-2 and high durability. Furthermore, density functional theory calculations reveal that the pyridinic-N atoms of graphene anchored on CoMo alloy nanoparticles can efficiently modulate the electronic structure to generate optimal free energy of hydrogen adsorption (-0.029 eV), suggesting excellent HER intrinsic activity. This work may provide a facile avenue to achieve multiple metallic alloy-based nanomaterials for boosting electrochemical water splitting performance.

Abstract:Constructing hetero-structured catalyst is promising but still challenging to achieve overall water splitting for hydrogen production with high efficiency. Herein, we developed a sulfide-based MoS 2 /Co 1− x S@C hetero-structure for highly efficient electrochemical hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER). The carbon derived from the filter paper acts as a conducting carrier to ensure adequate exposure of the active sites guaranteed with improved catalytic stability. The unique hierarchical nano-sheets facilitate the charge and ion transfer by shortening the diffusion path during electro-catalysis. Meanwhile, the robust hetero-interfaces in MoS 2 /Co 1− x S@C can expose rich electrochemical active sites and facilitate the charge transfer, which further cooperates synergistically toward electro-catalytic reactions. Consequently, the optimal MoS 2 /Co 1− x S@C hetero-structures present small over-potentials toward HER (135 mV @ 10 mA·cm −2 ) and OER (230 mV @ 10 mA·cm −2 ). The MoS 2 /Co 1− x S@C electrolyzer requires an ultralow voltage of 1.6 V at the current density of 10 mA·cm −2 with excellent durability, outperforming the state-of-the-art electro-catalysts. This work sheds light on the design of the hetero-structured catalysts with interfacial engineering toward large-scale water splitting.
A methodological and conceptual review of inter organizational information systems integration

Abstract:The proliferation of applications to support cross-enterprise processes has left companies nursing a collection of systems. The integration of such systems, within and across the organizational boundaries, remains a top issue of researchers and practitioners’ agendas. Although integration has long been treated as a key variable in the IS field, the construct has received little conceptual scrutiny. In this essay we argue that the concept of IOIS integration (cross-enterprise integration of information systems) is still ambiguous and lacks an understanding on its nature. Thus we explore prior literature that has attempted to conceptualize IOIS integration. We examine dimensions that concern both the methodology used (epistemology, theoretical perspective, research approach, duration of the study, conceptual model and unit of analysis), and the construct (scope, layer of integration and conceptualization of the ICT artefact). Sixty-one articles are reviewed. We present the results and discuss different dimensions of the construct (definition, antecedents, consequences and measures). The purpose of this literature survey is to shed some light on the IOIS integration construct as well as to uncover areas for future research.
Dual-anions engineering of bimetallic oxides as highly active electrocatalyst for boosted overall water splitting

Abstract:Bimetallic oxides have unique advantages in driving both oxygen and hydrogen evolution reactions (OER/HER). Surface engineering of bimetallic oxides is a promising way to boost the catalytic activity by the regulation of electronic structure and surface property. Herein, a dual P, S-anions modification strategy is developed to optimize the catalytic performance of CoMoO4 nanowire arrays. The formations of CoP and Co3S4 species on the CoMoO4 surface bring heterojunction interfaces for more catalytic active sites and strong electronic interaction for faster interfacial charge transfer. Benefiting from these advantages, the P, S-CoMoO4 catalyst on nickel foam (NF) delivers excellent catalytic activity and stability. The overpotentials at 10 mA cm−2 of P, S-CoMoO4/NF for HER are just 31 mV in acid media and 58 mV in alkaline media, respectively. In addition, by assembling the P, S-CoMoO4/NF as bifunctional electrodes for overall water splitting, the electrolyzer exhibits a voltage of as low as 1.66 V at a current density of 50 mA cm−2. This work put forward a new avenue for the development of advanced bifunctional electrocatalysts for water splitting.

Synergistically coupled CoMo/Fe2O3 electrocatalyst for highly efficient and stable overall water splitting

Abstract:Constructing bifunctional non-precious metal electrocatalysts with advanced industrial value and excellent electrocatalytic performance to achieve efficient overall water splitting is important but difficult. Herein, a heterogeneous electrocatalyst comprising of CoMo alloys anchored Fe2O3 nanosheets was prepared by hydrothermal and electrodeposition methods. The strongly coupled interfaces between the CoMo alloys and Fe2O3 nanosheets promote charge redistribution, which could improve electron transfer efficiency and accelerate reaction kinetics, potentially optimizing reactant adsorption energy. Further density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal that the construction of CoMo/Fe2O3/NF heterostructured catalyst facilitates to promote interfacial charge redistribution and enhance charge transfer capacity, thus boosting the catalytic performance. Benefiting from this, the optimal CoMo/Fe2O3/NF heterostructure demonstrates a minimal overpotential of 71 mV at 10 mA cm-2 for the HER and 266 mV at 50 mA cm-2 for the OER. Remarkably, the catalyst served as a bifunctional electrode for water splitting, resulting in a cell voltage down to 1.5 V at a current density of 10 mA cm-2. This research provides an effective way for the construction of non-precious iron oxides-based bifunctional electrocatalysts using alloy/metal oxide interfacial engineering strategy.

Abstract:Developing low-cost and high-efficiency bifunctional catalysts for both the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) to catalyze electrochemical overall water splitting is critical for the production of hydrogen. Herein, we develop an in-situ reduction and vulcanization strategy to prepare MoO2@MoS2@Co9S8 heterostructure nanorods by utilizing MoO3@ZIF-67 as a precursor. The reduction of MoO3 can produce more conductive MoO2, and the vulcanization reaction can produce highly active MoS2 for the HER as well as highly active Co9S8 for the OER. In addition, the MoS2 anchor on the MoO2 not only facilitates electron transfer, but also interacts with Co9S8 to induce a synergic catalytic effect by the electron transfer between them. Moreover, the 2D nanosheet assembled heterostructure nanorods can provide a large electrochemical surface area. Therefore, the merits of the materials are fully utilized and outstanding catalytic performances are achieved. MoO2@MoS2@Co9S8 can catalyze HER and OER effectively with overpotentials of 160 and 310 mV at 10 mA cm−2, indicating its bifunctional activity. In addition, the two electrode electrolyzer catalyzed by MoO2@MoS2@Co9S8 can reach 10 mA cm−2 current density at a cell voltage of 1.62 V with very high stability, demonstrating its practical application for water splitting.

Abstract:The utilization of non-noble metal catalysts with robust and highly efficient electrocatalytic activity for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) are extremely important for the large-scale implementation of renewable energy devices. Integration of bifunctional electrocatalysts on both anode and cathode electrodes remains a significant challenge. Herein, we report on a novel and facile strategy to construct the ordered and aligned MoS2 nanosheet-encapsulated metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) derived hollow CoS polyhedron, in-situ grown on a nickel foam (NF). The starfish-like MoS2/CoS/NF heterojunctions were formed due to the ordered growth of the material caused by NF substrate. The optimized 2-MoS2/CoS/NF heterojunction exhibits robust bifunctional electrocatalytic activity with a low overpotential of 67 and 207 mV toward the HER and OER at 10 mA cm−2, and the long-term stability, which exceeds most of the reported bifunctional electrocatalysts. Such high electrocatalytic performance arises due to the synergistic effect between the MoS2 and CoS phases across the interface, the abundant active sites, as well as the hierarchical pore framework, which collectively enhance the mass and electron transfer during the reactions. The work provides a promising approach to fabricating bifunctional catalysts with custom-designed heterojunctions and remarkable performance for applications in electrochemical energy devices and related areas.

Abstract:With the socio economic development, people have paid more and more attention to energy source problems, especially to clean and renewable energy such as hydrogen. It is appealing but still challenging to find or design an appropriate catalyst which is inexpensive and efficient for both the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in the same electrolyte. In this work, we develop a facile synthesis of amorphous defectrich CoMoS4 via a one-step hydrothermal method, and under alkaline conditions; the CoMoS4 electrode can generate a current density of 10 mA cm(-2) at the overpotentials of 143 mV for HER and 342 mV for OER in 1.0 M KOH, respectively. A cell voltage of 1.72 V is required to achieve a current density of 10 mA cm(-2) with long-term stability in an electrolyzer using the CoMoS4/CC electrode as both the anode and cathode.
Engineering cobalt sulfide/oxide heterostructure with atomically mixed interfaces for synergistic electrocatalytic water splitting

Abstract:It remains challenging to develop economical and bifunctional electrocatalysts toward oxygen/hydrogen evolution reactions (OER/HER). Herein, we construct Co9S8 nanoflakes decorated Co3O4 nanoarrays with enriched heterogeneous interface zones on Ni foam (Co9S8@Co3O4/NF) via a novel step-wise approach. The Co9S8@Co3O4/NF hybrid manifests excellent performance with low overpotentials of 130 mV for HER (10 mA·cm−2) and 331 mV for OER (100 mA·cm−2), delivering a small voltage of 1.52 V for water splitting at 10 mA·cm−2 as well as outstanding catalytic durability, which surpasses precious metals and previously reported earth-abundant nanocatalysts. Further experimental and theoretical investigations demonstrate that the excellent performance is attributed to the followings: (i) Highly conductive Ni facilitates the efficient charge transfer; (ii) porous core-shell nanoarchitecture benefits the infiltration and transportation of gases/ions; (iii) heterogeneous interface zones synergistically lower the chemisorption energy of hydrogen/oxygen intermediates. This work will shed light on the controllable synthesis and engineering of heterostructure nanomaterials for clean energy storage and conversion technologies.

Abstract:Developing highly efficient noble-metal-free bifunctional nanocatalysts for electrocatalytic water splitting is attractive but challenging. Notably, the rational structure engineering could effectively promote electronic transfer and improve the active area. Herein, a free-standing N-doped porous carbon nanosheet arrays encap-sulated with metallic Co nanoparticles electrocatalyst (Co@NC-A) for overall water splitting was designed via pyrolysis process followed with acid treatment. The N-doped carbon matrix not only enhances electron mobility and protects the metallic Co nanoparticles from electrolyte corrosion, but also improves the electrochemically active area and facilitates mass transfer. Consequently, the Co@NC-A exhibits superior electrocatalytic perfor-mance toward OER (ri10 = 270 mV) and HER (ri10 = 162 mV) in 1 M KOH. Moreover, the Co@NC-A as a bifunctional catalyst in overall water splitting could approach 10 mA cm-2 at a cell voltage of 1.66 V and operate stably for 50 h. Combined with the density functional theory (DFT) calculations, the improvement of the HER and OER activities is also attributed to the modified electronic structure with N-doped carbon and the optimized free energy toward the adsorption/desorption of intermediates. This work provides a novel and facile non-precious metal catalyst for water splitting and should be instructive for designing more carbon-based nanocatalysts.
Strongly Coupled Molybdenum Carbide on Carbon Sheets As a Bifunctional Electrocatalyst for Overall Water Splitting.

Abstract:High-performance and affordable electrocatalysts from earth-abundant elements are desirably pursued for water splitting involving hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Here, a bifunctional electrocatalyst of highly crystalline Mo2C nanoparticles supported on carbon sheets (Mo2C/CS) was designed toward overall water splitting. Owing to the highly active catalytic nature of Mo2C nanoparticles, the high surface area of carbon sheets and efficient charge transfer in the strongly coupled composite, the designed catalysts show excellent bifunctional behavior with an onset potential of -60 mV for HER and an overpotential of 320 mV to achieve a current density of 10 mA cm(-2) for OER in 1 M KOH while maintaining robust stability. Moreover, the electrolysis cell using the catalyst only requires a low cell voltage of 1.73 V to achieve a current density of 10 mA cm(-2) and maintains the activity for more than 100 h when employing the Mo2C/CS catalyst as both anode and cathode electrodes. Such high performance makes Mo2C/CS a promising electrocatalyst for practical hydrogen production from water splitting.
Fabrication of NiC/MoC/NiMoO4 Heterostructured Nanorod Arrays as Stable Bifunctional Electrocatalysts for Efficient Overall Water Splitting

Abstract:Developing noble-metal-free, earth-abundant, highly active, and stable electrocatalysts with high efficiency for both hydrogen and oxygen evolution reactions is of great importance for the development of overall water-splitting devices, but still remains a challenging issue. Herein, a 3D heterostructured NiC/MoC/NiMoO4 electrocatalyst was prepared through a facile synthetic procedure. The electrocatalyst shows a superior catalytic activity and stability toward the hydrogen and oxygen evolution reactions. The optimized NiC/MoC/NiMoO4 catalyst presents low overpotentials of 68 and 280 mV to reach a current density of 10 mA cm-2 in 1.0 m KOH for the hydrogen and oxygen evolution reactions, respectively. Assembled as an electrolyzer for overall water splitting, such a heterostructure shows quite a low cell voltage of 1.52 V at 10 mA cm-2 and remarkable stability for more than 20 h. This work provides a facile but efficient approach for the design and preparation of highly efficient bifunctional and self-supported heterostructured electrocatalysts that can serve as promising candidates in electrochemical energy storage and conversion.
Engineering the abundant heterointerfaces of integrated bimetallic sulfide-coupled 2D MOF-derived mesoporous CoS2 nanoarray hybrids for electrocatalytic water splitting

Abstract:An efficient and robust electrocatalyst was prepared for overall water splitting in alkaline media. The rational design of two-dimensional metal-organic framework (MOF)–derived mesoporous CoS2 nanoarrays coupled with FeS2@MoS2 layers shows enhanced electrocatalytic activity toward the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER). The FeS2-MoS2@CoS2-MOF nanostructure demonstrates superior electrocatalytic activity toward the HER with an overpotential of 92 mV at 10 mA/cm2 and the OER with an overpotential of 211 mV at 20 mA/cm2. FeS2-MoS2@CoS2-MOF(+)||FeS2-MoS2@CoS2-MOF(−) delivered comparatively low cell voltages of 1.51, 1.66, and 1.78 V at current densities of 10, 50, and 100 mA/cm2, respectively, with remarkable stability for 30 h. The prepared electrocatalyst is the most efficient compared with previously reported results owing to the abundant heterointerfaces, mesoporous nanostructures, and multimetallic active centers, and it opens up the discussion for exploring MOF-based catalysts for overall water splitting applications. This work highlights the engineering of abundant heterointerfaces for improving HER/OER performance.
