Abstract:PURPOSE: This study explored the gaze patterns of fully sighted and visually impaired subjects during the high-risk activity of crossing the street.METHODS: Gaze behavior of 12 fully sighted subjects, nine with visual impairment resulting from age-related macular degeneration and 12 with impairment resulting from glaucoma, was monitored using a portable eye tracker as they crossed at two unfamiliar intersections.RESULTS: All subject groups fixated primarily on vehicles and crossing elements but changed their fixation behavior as they moved from "walking to the curb" to "standing at the curb" and to "crossing the street." A comparison of where subjects fixated in the 4-second time period before crossing showed that the fully sighted who waited for the light to change fixated on the light, whereas the fully sighted who crossed early fixated primarily on vehicles. Visually impaired subjects crossing early or waiting for the light fixate primarily on vehicles.CONCLUSIONS: Vision status affects fixation allocation while performing the high-risk activity of street crossing. Crossing decision-making strategy corresponds to fixation behavior only for the fully sighted subjects.

Abstract:How do people distribute their visual attention in the natural environment? We and our colleagues have usually addressed this question by showing pictures, photographs or videos of natural scenes under controlled conditions and recording participants' eye movements as they view them. In the present study, we investigated whether people distribute their gaze in the same way when they are immersed and moving in the world compared to when they view video clips taken from the perspective of a walker. Participants wore a mobile eye tracker while walking to buy a coffee, a trip that required a short walk outdoors through the university campus. They subsequently watched first-person videos of the walk in the lab. Our results focused on where people directed their eyes and their head, what objects were gazed at and when attention-grabbing items were selected. Eye movements were more centralised in the real world, and locations around the horizon were selected with head movements. Other pedestrians, the path, and objects in the distance were looked at often in both the lab and the real world. However, there were some subtle differences in how and when these items were selected. For example, pedestrians close to the walker were fixated more often when viewed on video than in the real world. These results provide a crucial test of the relationship between real behaviour and eye movements measured in the lab.

Abstract:This research is motivated by the widespread use of desktop environments in the lab and by the recent trend of conducting real-world eye-tracking experiments to investigate pedestrian navigation. Despite the existing significant differences between the real world and the desktop environments, how pedestrians' visual behavior in real environments differs from that in desktop environments is still not well understood. Here, we report a study that recorded eye movements for a total of 82 participants while they were performing five common navigation tasks in an unfamiliar urban environment (N = 39) and in a desktop environment (N = 43). By analyzingwherethe participants allocated their visual attention,whatobjects they fixated on, andhowthey transferred their visual attention among objects during navigation, we found similarities and significant differences in the general fixation indicators, spatial fixation distributions and attention to the objects of interest. The results contribute to the ongoing debate over the validity of using desktop environments to investigate pedestrian navigation by providing insights intohowpedestrians allocate their attention to visual stimuli to accomplish navigation tasks in the two environments.

Abstract:Animating gaze behavior is crucial for creating believable virtual characters, providing insights into their perception and interaction with the environment. In this paper, we present an efficient yet natural‐looking gaze animation model applicable to real‐time walking characters exploring natural environments. We address the challenge of dynamic gaze adaptation by combining findings from neuroscience with a data‐driven saliency model. Specifically, our model determines gaze focus by considering the character's locomotion, environment stimuli, and terrain conditions. Our model is compatible with both automatic navigation through pre‐defined character trajectories and user‐guided interactive locomotion, and can be configured according to the desired degree of visual exploration of the environment. Our perceptual evaluation shows that our solution significantly improves the state‐of‐the‐art saliency‐based gaze animation with respect to the character's apparent awareness of the environment, the naturalness of the motion, and the elements to which it pays attention.

Abstract:Eye gaze behavior is considered an important aspect of doctor-patient nonverbal interaction process in a clinical encounter. Previous research shows that eye gaze behavior patterns works as part of a doctor's communication style and affects certain medical outcomes. New interventions (behavioral and technological) are continuously being introduced to the clinical encounters due to health care work system redesign and there is a need to evaluate the impact of these interventions on communication. The aim of this study was to develop a systematic approach to evaluate eye gaze behavior patterns using video coding and lag sequential analysis technique. Thirty-two clinical encounters with two interaction styles were analyzed. Differences and similarities in eye gaze behavior pattern were found in the two styles. Implications for interventions and evaluation in doctor-patient interaction are discussed.
Intrinsic group behaviour: dependence of pedestrian dyad dynamics on principal social and personal features

Abstract:Being determined by human social behaviour, pedestrian group dynamics depends on "intrinsic properties" of the group such as the purpose of the pedestrians, their personal relation, their gender, age, and body size. In this work we quantitatively study the dynamical properties of pedestrian dyads by analysing a large data set of automatically tracked pedestrian trajectories in an unconstrained "ecological" setting (a shopping mall), whose relational group properties have been coded by three different human observers. We observed that females walk slower and closer than males, that workers walk faster, at a larger distance and more abreast than leisure oriented people, and that inter group relation has a strong effect on group structure, with couples walking very close and abreast, colleagues walking at a larger distance, and friends walking more abreast than family members. Pedestrian height (obtained automatically through our tracking system) influences velocity and abreast distance, both growing functions of the average group height. Results regarding pedestrian age show as expected that elderly people walk slowly, while active age adults walk at the maximum velocity. Groups with children have a strong tendency to walk in a non abreast formation, with a large distance (despite a low abreast distance). A cross-analysis of the interplay between these intrinsic features, taking in account also the effect of extrinsic crowd density, confirms these major effects but reveals also a richer structure. An interesting and unexpected result, for example, is that the velocity of groups with children {\it increases} with density, at least in the low-medium density range found under normal conditions in shopping malls. Children also appear to behave differently according to the gender of the parent.

Gaze behavior during urban cycling: Effects of subjective risk perception and vista space properties

Abstract:<p>In this research, we investigate how gaze behavior during urban cycling is affected by subjective risk perception and the local spatial configuration. For this purpose, participants cycled at five defined test locations while wearing a mobile eye tracking system. Next to the fixation duration, we extracted sight vector lengths (i.e., the distance between the current body location and the gaze location) and gaze angles (i.e., the degree to which the gaze deviates from the current travel direction). Concerning risk perception, participants provided a hazard estimate for each test location, as well as information about specific areas they experienced as dangerous. This information was aggregated into a local hazard level across all participants. Finally, the vista space (i.e., the space visible from the current position during a fixation) was quantified via isovist analysis. The results imply that spatially open locations, extending about equally into all directions, increase the level of perceived risk. Depending on the local spatial properties, participants also gaze into different directions, rather than further ahead and into their travel direction. Higher cycling experience and greater familiarity with a location enabled a more foresighted and focused gaze behavior. Our findings underline the importance to provide cyclists not only with enough space and with unobstructed views, but also to limit the space they are required to distribute their attention to.</p>
The nature of the visual representations involved in eye movements when walking down the street

Abstract:In this paper we set out to answer two questions. The first aims to discover whether saccades are driven by low level image features (as suggested by a number of recent and influential models), a position we call image salience, or whether they are driven by the meaning and reward associated with the world, a position we call world salience. The second question concerns the reference frame in which the eye movements are planned. To answer these questions, we recorded six videos, using a head mounted camera, with the viewer walking down a popular shopping street in Bristol. As well as showing these videos to our participants, we also showed spatially and temporally filtered versions of them. We found that, at a coarse spatial scale, subjects viewed similar locations in the image, irrespective of the filtering, and that fixation distributions found when viewing videos with similar filtering were no more alike than if the filtering varied widely. Using a novel mixture modelling technique, we also showed that the most important reference frame was world-centred rather than head or body-based. This was confirmed by a second experiment where the fixation distributions to identical videos was systematically changed by using a swivelling tent that only altered subjects’ perception of the gravitational vertical. We conclude that eye movements should not be understood in terms of image salience, or even information maximization, but in terms of the more flexible concept of reward maximization.

Gaze Scanning on Mid-Block Sidewalks by Pedestrians With Homonymous Hemianopia With or Without Spatial Neglect

Abstract:Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate gaze-scanning by pedestrians with homonymous hemianopia (HH) when walking on mid-block sidewalks. Methods: Pedestrians with right homonymous hemianopia (RHH), and left homonymous hemianopia (LHH) without and with left spatial neglect (LHSN) walked on city streets wearing a gaze-tracking system. Gaze points were obtained by combining head movement and eye-in-head movement. Mixed-effects regression models were used to compare horizontal gaze scan magnitudes and rates between the side of the hemi-field loss (BlindSide) and the seeing side (SeeingSide), among the three subject groups, and between mid-block walking and street crossing segments. Results: A total of 7021 gaze scans were obtained from 341 minutes of mid-block walking videos by 19 participants (6 with LHH, 7 with RHH, and 6 with LHSN). The average gaze magnitude and scanning rate in mid-block segments were significantly higher towards the BlindSide than the SeeingSide in LHH (magnitude larger by 1.9° (degrees), P = 0.006; scan rate higher by 4.2 scans/minute, P < 0.001) and RHH subjects (magnitude larger by 3.3°, P < 0.001; scan rate higher by 3.2 scans/minute, P = 0.002), but they were not significantly different in LHSN subjects. The scanning rate, in terms of scans/minute (mean, 95% confidence interval [CI]) was significantly lower in LHSN subjects (mean = 6.9, 95% CI = 5.6-8.7) than LHH (mean = 10.2, 95% CI = 8.0-13.1; P = 0.03) and RHH (mean = 11.1, 95% CI = 9.0-13.7; P = 0.007) subjects. Compared to street-crossings, the scan rate during the mid-block segments was lower by 3.5 scans/minute (P < 0.001) and the gaze magnitude was smaller by 3.8° (P < 0.001) over the 3 groups. Conclusions: Evidence of compensatory scanning suggests a proactive, top-down mechanism driving gaze in HH. The presence of spatial neglect (SN) appeared to negatively impact the top-down process.

Abstract:This study investigated gaze behavior during visuo-cognitive-motor tasks with a change of movement direction in glaucoma patients and healthy controls. Nineteen glaucoma patients (10 females, 9 males) and 30 healthy sighted controls (17 females, 13 males) participated in this cross-sectional study. Participants performed two visuo-cognitive-motor tasks with a change of movement direction: (i) the "Speed-Court-Test" that involved stepping on different sensors in response to a visual sign displayed on either a large or small screen (165′′ and 55′′, respectively); (ii) the "Trail-Walking-Test" that required walking to 15 cones labeled with numbers (1–8) or letters (A-G) in an alternately ascending order. During these tasks, the time needed for completing each task was determined and the gaze behavior (e.g., saccade duration, fixation duration) was recorded via eye tracking. Data were analyzed with repeated measures analyses of covariance (ANCOVA; GROUP × SCREEN) and one-way ANCOVA. No differences between groups were found for the time needed to complete the tasks. However, during the "Trail-Walking-Test", the fixation duration was longer for glaucoma patients than for controls (p = 0.016, = 0.131). Furthermore, during the "Speed-Court-Test", there was a screen size effect. Irrespective of group, saccade amplitudes were lower (p < 0.001, = 0.242) and fixation durations were higher (p = 0.021, = 0.125) for the small screen. Fixation durations were longer in glaucoma patients during the cognitively demanding "Trail-Walking-Test", which might indicate a strategy to compensate for their visual impairment.

Gaze facilitates responsivity during hand coordinated joint attention

Abstract:The coordination of attention between individuals is a fundamental part of everyday human social interaction. Previous work has focused on the role of gaze information for guiding responses during joint attention episodes. However, in many contexts, hand gestures such as pointing provide another valuable source of information about the locus of attention. The current study developed a novel virtual reality paradigm to investigate the extent to which initiator gaze information is used by responders to guide joint attention responses in the presence of more visually salient and spatially precise pointing gestures. Dyads were instructed to use pointing gestures to complete a cooperative joint attention task in a virtual environment. Eye and hand tracking enabled real-time interaction and provided objective measures of gaze and pointing behaviours. Initiators displayed gaze behaviours that were spatially congruent with the subsequent pointing gestures. Responders overtly attended to the initiator's gaze during the joint attention episode. However, both these initiator and responder behaviours were highly variable across individuals. Critically, when responders did overtly attend to their partner's face, their saccadic reaction times were faster when the initiator's gaze was also congruent with the pointing gesture, and thus predictive of the joint attention location. These results indicate that humans attend to and process gaze information to facilitate joint attention responsivity, even in contexts where gaze information is implicit to the task and joint attention is explicitly cued by more spatially precise and visually salient pointing gestures.

Abstract:Brain processes associated with emotion perception from biological motion have been largely investigated using point-light displays that are devoid of pictorial information and not representative of everyday life. In this study, we investigated the brain signals evoked when perceiving emotions arising from body movements of virtual pedestrians walking in a community environment. Magnetoencephalography was used to record brain activation in 21 healthy young adults discriminating the emotional gaits (neutral, angry, happy) of virtual male/female pedestrians. Event-related responses in the posterior superior temporal sulcus (pSTS), fusiform body area (FBA), extrastriate body area (EBA), amygdala (AMG), and lateral occipital cortex (Occ) were examined. Brain signals were characterized by an early positive peak (P1;∼200ms) and a late positive potential component (LPP) comprising of an early (400-600ms), middle (600-1000ms) and late phase (1000-1500ms). Generalized estimating equations revealed that P1 amplitude was unaffected by emotion and gender of pedestrians. LPP amplitude showed a significant emotion X phase interaction in all regions of interest, revealing i) an emotion-dependent modulation starting in pSTS and Occ, followed by AMG, FBA and EBA, and ii) generally enhanced responses for angry vs. other gait stimuli in the middle LPP phase. LPP also showed a gender X phase interaction in pSTS and Occ, as gender affected the time course of the response to emotional gait. Present findings show that brain activation within areas associated with biological motion, form, and emotion processing is modulated by emotional gait stimuli rendered by virtual simulations representative of everyday life.

Abstract:Every day we make thousands of saccades and take thousands of steps as we explore our environment. Despite their common co-occurrence in a typical active state, we know little about the coordination between eye movements, walking behaviour and related changes in cortical activity. Technical limitations have been a major impediment, which we overcome here by leveraging the advantages of an immersive wireless virtual reality (VR) environment with three-dimensional (3D) position tracking, together with simultaneous recording of eye movements and mobile electroencephalography (EEG). Using this approach with participants engaged in unencumbered walking along a clear, level path, we find that the likelihood of eye movements at both slow and natural walking speeds entrains to the rhythm of footfall, peaking after the heel-strike of each step. Compared to previous research, this entrainment was captured in a task that did not require visually guided stepping – suggesting a persistent interaction between locomotor and visuomotor functions. Simultaneous EEG recordings reveal a concomitant modulation entrained to heel-strike, with increases and decreases in oscillatory power for a broad range of frequencies. The peak of these effects occurred in the theta and alpha range for slow and natural walking speeds, respectively. Together, our data show that the phase of the step-cycle influences other behaviours such as eye movements, and produces related modulations of simultaneous EEG following the same rhythmic pattern. These results reveal gait as an important factor to be considered when interpreting saccadic and time–frequency EEG data in active observers, and demonstrate that saccadic entrainment to gait may persist throughout everyday activities.

Abstract:This study aimed to determine the visual assessment skills during an observation-based gait analysis. Participants (N=40) included 20 physiotherapists (PTs) with>10 years of clinical experience (physiotherapists) and 20 physiotherapy students. Both groups watched a video of the gait of a subject with Guillain–Barré syndrome before and after being provided with information regarding other movements. Further, visual lines were measured using an EMR-8 eye mark recorder, and the results were compared between both groups. The average gaze duration was longer for students than for PTs (F1,79=53.3; p<0.01), whereas PTs gazed more often than the students (F1,79=87.6; p< 0.01). Furthermore, the PTs moved their eyes vertically more often than the students (F1,151=9.1; P< 0.01). We found that being able to discriminate the relative physical relationship of body locations by frequent and rapid vertical gazes could be an indication of the level of skills as an index to express the visual assessment skill in an observation-based gait analysis.

Abstract:Recent research has demonstrated active bone-like remodelling of vascular tissue in dialysis and non dialysis patients. Cross-sectional studies indicate that the presence of vascular calcification is inversely related to bone mass. Theoretically, the relationship implies that maintaining normal bone turnover and mass may help to decrease vascular calcification. In addition, it is now apparent that phosphorus and the Ca x P product need to be kept as close to normal as possible. Thus, the present goal should be a serum phosphorus of 3.5-5.5 mg/dL, a Ca x P product of <55 mg/dL, and a PTH of around 150-200 pg/mL with the intact assay. Ten years ago, those goals would have been impossible. However, new pharmacologic agents will make their achievement much more realistic.

Abstract:Wayfinding is a representation of the adaptive behavior of humans. Research has shown that urban environments impact pedestrians' perception and cognition, and wayfinding is a common activity in various urban settings. However, it is unclear if there are variations in pedestrians' cognitive processes of wayfinding in different urban environments. This study investigated how urban spatial environments (residential district vs. commercial district; RD vs. CD) and lighting environments (daytime vs. nighttime) impact pedestrians' wayfinding behaviors in terms of time and space. Eye tracking, electroencephalography (EEG), and behavioural data from forty-three pedestrians were collected to compare their perceptual, decision-making, and task-execution processes in different environmental conditions. The study found that pedestrians in residential areas had lower spatial perception and attentional control, but higher decision speed and cognitive load compared to pedestrians in commercial areas during the perceptual decision-making phase. Pedestrians in daytime environments experience reduced spatial perception but increased cognitive load and enhanced attentional control compared to nighttime condition. In the task execution phase, the completion time was longer in the residential area compared to the commercial area. However, there was no significant difference in terms of task performance, such as average speed, and no direct correlation was found between the light environment and task performance. Participants exhibited different pathfinding strategies across different urban environments. This study extends the research of urban environments and has practical implications for urban spatial environment construction, lighting design, and navigation system optimization.

Abstract:The signature of cognitive involvement in gait control has rarely been studied using both kinematic and neuromuscular features. The present study aimed to address this gap. Twenty-four healthy young adults walked on an instrumented treadmill in a virtual environment under two optic flow conditions: normal (NOF) and perturbed (POF, continuous mediolateral pseudorandom oscillations). Each condition was performed under single-task and dual-task conditions of increasing difficulty (1-, 2-, 3-back). Subjective mental workload (raw NASA-TLX), cognitive performance (mean reaction time and d-prime), kinematic (steadiness, variability and complexity in the mediolateral and anteroposterior directions) and neuromuscular (duration and variability of motor primitives) control of gait were assessed. The cognitive performance and the number and composition of motor modules were unaffected by simultaneous walking, regardless of the optic flow condition. Kinematic and neuromuscular variability was greater under POF compared to NOF conditions. Young adults sought to counteract POF by rapidly correcting task-relevant gait fluctuations. The depletion of cognitive resources through dual-tasking led to reduced kinematic and neuromuscular variability and this occurred to the same extent regardless of simultaneous working memory (WM) load. Increasing WM load led to a prioritization of gait control in the mediolateral direction over the anteroposterior direction. The impact of POF on kinematic variability (step velocity) was reduced when a cognitive task was performed simultaneously, but this phenomenon was no modulated by WM load. Collectively, these results shed important light on how young adults adjust the processes involved in goal-directed locomotion when exposed to varying levels of task and environmental constraints.

Abstract:Walking in urban settings requires people to negotiate crowds. In these situations, people typically want to maintain a level of personal space around themselves. Recent work on one-versus-one interactions demonstrated that whether one of the pedestrians looked distracted or interacted with an object (e.g., stroller, bike) predicted the medial-lateral separation between them as they walked past each other. However, this work did not distinguish between the type of object interaction (or mobility constraint) and thus, it is unclear whether different constraints have different effects on avoidance behaviours. Here we tested the hypothesis that the type of object an approaching pedestrian held or pushed would affect the extent of path deviation, which would also depend on whether that pedestrian was distracted. To address this hypothesis, we created an immersive virtual environment that consisted of a 3.5-m-wide paved urban path. Participants had to walk and avoid colliding with approaching virtual pedestrians that often held a shopping bag or pushed a bike or stroller while looking straight ahead or off to the side as if distracted. Distraction did not affect avoidance behaviours. However, participants increased medial-lateral separation with the virtual pedestrian at the time of crossing when a stroller was present compared to the other mobility constraints. The type of mobility constraint also differentially affected onset of deviation and rate of progression before and after a path deviation. These results support the idea that characteristics of the obstacle to avoid (in this case, a virtual pedestrian) influence collision avoidance behaviours.
