Abstract:AbstractWith interest in the potential of optical fibres as the basis of next-generation thermoluminescence dosimeters (TLDs), the development of suitable forms of material and their fabrication has become a fast-growing endeavour. Present study focuses on three types of Ge-doped optical fibres with different structural arrangements and/or shapes, namely conventional cylindrical fibre, capillary fibre and flat fibre, all fabricated using the same optical fibre preform. For doses from 0.5 to 8 Gy, obtained at electron and photon energies, standard thermoluminescence (TL) characteristics of the optical fibres have been the subject of detailed investigation. The results show that in collapsing the capillary fibre into a flat shape, the TL yield is increased by a factor of 5.5, the yield being also some 3.2 times greater than that of the conventional cylindrical fibre fabricated from the same perform. This suggests a means of production of suitably sensitive TLD for in-vivo dosimeter applications. Addressing the associated defects generating luminescence from each of the optical fibres, the study encompasses analysis of the TL glow curves, with computerized glow curve deconvolution (CGCD) and 2nd order kinetics.

Abstract:We propose a novel porous-core photonic crystal fiber (PCF) consisting of asymmetrical rectangular air holes in the core and six-ring hexagonal lattice circular air holes in the cladding for achieving low-loss polarization terahertz transmission in a wide frequency range. By assuming TOPAS as the host material, the finite element method (FEM) is used to investigate its properties. The near-zero flattened dispersion of −0.01±0.02 ps/THz/cm is achieved over a frequency range of 1.0–2.0 THz, as well as a high birefringence of 7.1 × 10−2 which can be useful for polarization-maintaining applications. Also, critical parameters such as mode field distribution, effective material loss, confinement loss, and effective mode area are discussed in detail. Abstract:The quality of treatment delivery as prescribed in radiotherapy is exceptionally important. One element that helps provide quality assurance is the ability to carry out time-resolved radiotherapy dose measurements. Reports on doped silica optical fibers scintillators using radioluminescence (RL) based radiotherapy dosimetry have indicated merits, especially regarding robustness, versatility, wide dynamic range, and high spatial resolution. Topping the list is the ability to provide time-resolved measurements, alluding to pulse-by-pulse dosimetry. For effective time-resolved dose measurements, high temporal resolution is enabled by high-speed electronics and scintillator material offering sufficiently fast rise and decay time. In the present work, we examine the influence of Ge doping on the RL response of Ge-doped silica optical fiber scintillators. We particularly look at the size of the Ge-doped core relative to the fiber diameter, and its associated effects as it is adjusted from single-mode fiber geometry to a large core-to-cladding ratio structure. The primary objective is to produce a structure that facilitates short decay times with a sufficiently large yield for time-resolved dosimetry. RL characterization was carried out using a high-energy clinical X-ray beam (6 MV), delivered by an Elekta Synergy linear accelerator located at the Advanced Medical and Dental Institute, Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM). The Ge-doped silica optical fiber scintillator samples, fabricated using chemical vapor deposition methods, comprised of large core and small core optical fiber scintillators with high and low core-to-cladding ratios, respectively. Accordingly, these samples having different Ge-dopant contents offer distinct numbers of defects in the amorphous silica network. Responses were recorded for six dose-rates (between 35 MU/min and 590 MU/min), using a photomultiplier tube setup with the photon-counting circuit capable of gating time as small as 1 μs. The samples showed linear RL response, with differing memory and afterglow effects depending on its geometry. Samples with a large core-to-cladding ratio showed a relatively short decay time (<1 ms). The results suggest a contribution of Ge-doping in affecting the triplet states of the SiO2 matrix, thereby reducing phosphorescence effects. This is a desirable feature of scintillating glass materials that enables avoiding the pulse pile-up effect, especially in high dose-rate applications. These results demonstrate the potential of Ge-doped optical-fiber scintillators, with a large core-to-cladding ratio for use in time-resolved radiation dosimetry.

Abstract:This paper introduces the application of a photonic crystal fiber (PCF) sensor to be used as a gamma ray dosimeter. This paper proposes an efficient analysis of a highly sensitive surface Plasmon resonance for gamma ray dose detection in nuclear research reactors. The proposed structure makes use of a Poly-Vinyl Alcohol (PVA) polymer, which has high sensitivity to an external electric field and gamma rays making it suitable for nuclear reactor applications. At resonance frequency, the peak of spectral loss for dosimeter sensors refers to gamma irradiation dose values. Therefore, study the different geometrical parameters for the proposed PCF sensor is of significant importance to achieve high sensitivity with low spectral losses. The full-vectorial finite-element method has been used for analysis with the plane wave expansion method. The sensitivity of the suggested sensor achieves up to 0.006 μm per gamma-ray dose unit (μm/Gy) with low losses.

Abstract:In this article, a hexagonal-shaped porous core and sectored-cladding structured photonic crystal fiber (PCF) is presented for efficient wave propagation in Terahertz (THz) domain. The full vector analysis based finite element method with Comsol software (v. 5.3a) is employed to design and optimize the PCF geometry and evaluate its optical properties. The PCF geometry demonstrates polarization maintaining attributes with a significant distinction between x and y polarization modes. The proposed PCF exhibits an ultra-low effective material loss of 0.013 cm −1 and 0.020 cm −1 in x and y polarization modes, respectively with a flattened dispersion of ± 0.020 ps/THz/cm and ± 0.065 ps/THz/cm in the respective modes at 1 THz. Additionally, the proposed PCF structure is investigated for sensing different liquid chemicals (cholesterol, methanol, ethanol, and benzene) and air pollutants (cyanide, dioxin, nitrogen oxide, and hydrogen sulfide). It is shown that the proposed PCF can outperform a number of recently reported designs in the literature. The fabrication potential of the PCF are also discussed in the context of present developments in manufacturing.

Abstract:The precise, rapid and direct visualization of 3D topographical dose in the target tissue that is crucial for effective radiation therapy remains a challenge. Herein, by combining hydrogel photonic crystals with film stacking or 3D printing, a 3D radiochromic dosimeter with a dose sensitivity up to 10 nm/Gy, a spatial resolution < 50 μm, and the ability to detect complex 3D topographical dose distribution was proposed for clinical radiation dose verification. The performance of the dosimeter by radiation-induced polymer cross-linking and consequent Bragg wavelength shift can be tuned via the solid content and extent of acrylate modification. The combination of rapid readout, low dose response, high spatial resolution, and good environmental stability highlights the translational potential of this technology for topographical dose mapping in clinical radiotherapy applications.

Abstract:The present study aims to develop a thermoluminescence (TL) material for dosimeter that might potentially surpass the performance of passive dosimeters that are currently available. The study focuses on the essential TL characteristics of biochar that is rich in carbon. The main thermoluminescence (TL) dosimetric properties of commercially available biochar under exposure to X-ray photon beams from Linac at doses ranging from 2 Gy to 20 Gy have been examined. These properties include dose response, sensitivity, TL glow curve, energy dependency, and fading. It has been demonstrated that the biochar provides an excellent linear response in the dose range under study and sensitive at lower dose. The biochar sample demonstrated great reproducibility, with a standard variation of less than 3%. Furthermore, a fading study was conducted and a minimum rate of fading for ambient light and dark room circumstances was discovered. The dose-dependent microstructural degradation of biochar is confirmed by SEM/EDX analysis. The structural changes caused by the radiation doses are being monitored using Raman spectra and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The kinetic parameters analysis also confirms the structural alteration brought by photon irradiation. As a result, biochar demonstrates the significant potential to be used in dosimetric applications.

Abstract:Purpose: For more than a decade that plastic optical fiber based dosimeters have been developed for medical applications. The feasibility of dosimeters using optical fibers that are almost Cherenkov light free has been demonstrated in some prototypes, particularly suitable for photon high-energy beams. In the energy range up to a few hundred keV, where the production of Cherenkov light by secondary electrons is negligible or small, the largest source of background are the fluorescence mechanisms. Methods: In recent years our group has developed an optical fiber dosimeter with photodiode readout named DosFib, which has small energy dependence in the range below 100 keV relevant for radiology. Photodiodes are robust photodetectors, presenting good stability over time and enough sensitivity to allow the use of an electrometer as a measuring device without extra electronics. Results: In-vitro tests using a High Dose Rate 192Ir source have demonstrated its suitability for brachytherapy applications using this important radioactive source. Attenuation curves have been obtained in water with the DosFib dosimeter and an ionization chamber and the depth dose profiles shown to be identical. Conclusions: This new dosimeter can thus be calibrated and used in clinical measurements with good competitive advantages over other dosimeters.

Abstract:\emph{Objective}. Optical fibre dosimeters offer great promise for real-time in vivo dose measurement in radiation-based treatment modalities such as radiotherapy and brachytherapy. This is attributed to their many useful qualities such as high spatial resolution and sensitivity. However, there are several requirements that an optical fibre dosimeter must meet to be acceptable for dose measurement in a specified treatment modality. In this work, the dosimetric performance of a novel optical fibre dosimeter for use in external beam radiotherapy is presented. \emph{Approach}. The dosimeter was characterised for photon beam energies between 6-15 MV using a Varian TrueBeam Linac at dose rates between 100-2400 MU/min and assessed based on its repeatability, dose dependence, dose rate dependence, energy dependence and dose-per-pulse dependence. \emph{Main Results}. The results demonstrated excellent short-term repeatability of 0.3 , good linearity in response (R 0.9997), and minor dose rate dependence between 0.53-2.49 for all beam qualities investigated. As the scintillator of the optical fibre dosimeter is non-water equivalent, Monte-Carlo-TOPAS simulations were used to calculate the absorbed dose energy dependence. A dose-per-pulse dependence was also investigated and compared with dosimetry measurements made with an ionisation chamber and simulated from the treatment planning system. An over-response of 20 was found at the lowest investigated dose-per-pulse, and an under-response of 34 was found at the highest investigated dose-per-pulse. This is believed to be due to an intrinsic energy dependence making this type of optical fibre dosimeter unsuitable for external beam radiotherapy dosimetry. \emph{Significance}. The optical fibre dosimeter evaluated in this work was primarily designed for high-dose-rate brachytherapy whereas this study includes the first measurements made in external beam radiotherapy and highlights the challenges of transferability of the dosimeter to a different radiation source.

Abstract:The liquid-infiltrated photonic crystal fibre (LI-PCF) is proposed for guiding terahertz radiation. Geometrical asymmetry is achieved by introducing a large ellipse in the core. By filling the ellipse with liquid cocaine, the optical properties of the photonic crystal fibre (PCF) are theoretically examined using finite element method-based COMSOL multiphysics software. At an operating frequency of 1 THz, the proposed LI-PCF demonstrates a sensitivity of 87.02% and confinement loss in the order of 10−4 cm−1. The PCF also demonstrates extremely low effective material loss <0.01 cm−1, a birefringence of 0.018, large effective mode area of 1.11 × 105 µm2, a high numerical aperture of 0.45 and near-zero ultra-flattened chromatic dispersion of 1.4351 ± 0.5883 ps/THz/cm. The design simplicity and high sensitivity, strong confinement factor, low material losses and high birefringence of the fibre suggest that the proposed fibre may be convenient for PCF-based cocaine sensing, for application in the security and defence industries.

Abstract:This study introduces a cutting-edge fiber-optic dosimetry (FOD) sensor designed for measuring radiation in biological settings. The accuracy and precision of dosimeters for small animals, particularly prolonged exposure to nonuniform radiation fields, are always challenging. A state-of-the-art in-vivo dosimeter utilizing glass-encapsulated Thermoluminescence cylindrical detector (TLD) was introduced. The FODs are implanted into the rat during a prolonged irradiation scenario involving 137 Cs where the rat has the freedom to move within a heterogeneous radiation domain. The implantation surgery was verified with X-ray computed tomography (CT) in addition to biochemical and pathological tests to assess the biocompatibility of FOD in vivo. A versatile FOD is designed for industrial and medical fields, which demand accurate and resilient radiation dosimeters. The dose measurements are associated with precise two-dimensional (2D) radiation distribution imaging. Three cylindrical FODs and three standards TLD_100 for each rat were tested. The measurements of peak irradiation before and after exposure reveal greater stability and superior sensitivity when compared to standard thermo-luminescence detectors in an in-vivo animal test. To the best of our knowledge, FOD testing on live animals is presented for the first time in this paper. Regarding the safety and biocompatibility of FOD, no morphological signs with any kind of inflammation or sensitivity toward the FOD material have been remarked. Moreover, with the current FOD, there is no oedema between the epidermal, dermal, and subdermal sections at the site of implantation. The results also show the stable levels of white blood cells (lymphocytes, granulocytes, MID) as blood inflammatory markers before surgery and at the time of extraction of the implanted dosimeters, thus confirming the biocompatibility for each optical fiber cylinder dosimeter. As a result, the new dosimeters have excellent biocompatibility in living tissues and have 100% accurate reusability intensity of the delivered radiation doses compared to TLD_100 which demonstrated a 45% reduction in its intensity accuracy.

Feasibility assessment of polycrystalline CsPbI 3 relative dosimeters in photon and electron beam radiotherapy

Abstract:Volumetric modulated arc therapy represents the latest technology in radiotherapy. It involves continuous modification of the multi-leaf collimator spatial distribution, dose rate, and gantry rotational speed, necessitating a dosimeter with high spatial resolution and exceptional sensitivity per unit volume. In particular, cesium-based inorganic perovskites have been studied for various applications, spanning from photoconductor solar cells to radiation detectors. These perovskites are renowned for their outstanding attributes, including thermal stability, inorganic stability, and light absorption capacity. Despite such advantageous characteristics, CsPbI 3 materials have only been investigated in radiodiagnostics, with limited exploration in radiotherapy. To address this gap, this study verified the viability of CsPbI 3 materials, note for their outstanding radiation detection efficiency, as dosimeters capable of measuring the radiation detection performance for radiotherapy devices. The reproducibility, linearity, and percent depth dose (PDD) were evaluated under the application of photon and electron beams in linear accelerators. The reproducibility assessment revealed impressive results, with the relative standard deviation registering at 0.53%, 0.32%, and 0.38% under electron beam energies of 6, 9, and 12 MeV and 0.45%, and 0.89% under photon beam energies of 6 and 15 MV. Moreover, the linearity test revealed an R 2 value of 0.9999, indicating high linearity, at 6, 9, and 12 MeV and at 6 and 15 MV. The PDD graphs drawn for the CsPbI 3 dosimeter fabricated in this study showed that the D max points were consistent. The novel CsPbI 3 dosimeter demonstrated a level of detection performance that satisfied all criteria; reproducibility, linearity, and PDD. The results collectively indicated that the CsPbI 3 dosimeter can be used for dosimeters in radiotherapy devices.

Characterization and Correction of Fading Effects in GeDOFs Microdosimeter for Absorbed Dose Measurements

Abstract:This study investigates the thermoluminescence (TL) fading of fabricated germanium-doped optical fibers (GeDOFs) with a focus on TL signal intensity, glow curve, best-fit curve, and correction factor. Two distinct GeDOFs geometries, cylindrical fiber (CF) and flat fiber (FF), were compared for TL intensity decay under 6 MV and 10 MV photon beams. TL intensity measurements were recorded from the first day post-irradiation to the 106th day and a comparison of two fading curve-fitting approaches was carried out. Fading correction factor () was derived, and the corresponding uncertainties were calculated. Over time, GeDOFs exhibited a decline in TL intensity, with a notably rapid decay occurring in the initial 30 days after irradiation. The most substantial TL intensity loss was observed in FF, with values of 58.9% for 6 MV and 63.4% for 10 MV. The evaluation of curve fitting showed that the best conformity was achieved through a single exponential decay equation model. The area under the glow curve decreased as the time between GeDOFs irradiation and TL readout increased. was determined by comparing the fading function of reference GeDOFs to that of the measured ones. The estimated uncertainties associated with were found to be 0.06% for CF and 0.12% for FF, respectively. GeDOFs exhibit fading characteristics influenced by TL readout interval time and radiation energy. When quantifying the absorbed dose from photon beams, it is crucial to account for the fading correction factor to ensure the precise and accurate measurement of the dose.

Potential of Germano-phosphosilicate Single Mode Optical Fibers for Dosimetry

Abstract:We study the Near-Infrared (NIR) Radiation-Induced Attenuation (RIA) of a Single-Mode (SM) optical fiber composed by a Ge-doped core, a ~4 μm thick P-doped inner cladding and pure Silica outer cladding. Its potential for dosimetry application has been investigated by spectral RIA measurements. The RIA, measured at 1550 nm, exhibits a linear growth as a function of the accumulated dose up to ~1 kGy(SiO2). The sensitivity to radiation, expressed by the coefficient ξ, results to be 164 mdB km-1 Gy-1 in the 0-1 kGy dose range, ~24 times lower than the one of a SM P-doped optical fiber. Furthermore, ξ almost does not depend on the dose-rate, its variation remains of the order of 6% (10 mdB km-1 Gy-1) for the dose-rate range from 10 mGy s-1 up to 10 Gy s-1. At wavelengths lower than ~1450 nm, our measurements reveal a stronger dose rate dependence and less interesting dosimetric properties. Finally, a preliminary test on the 1550 nm and 1625 nm RIA at different irradiation temperatures (from room temperature to 90°C) showed no significant changes in the ξ radiation sensitivity coefficients.

Abstract:We present the modeling of a porous core dispersion flatten photonic crystal fiber (PCF) for the fruitful transmission of THz signals. The model comprises only rectangular holes in both core and cladding areas. The model is numerically studied through simulation employing the finite element method (FEM)-based software. Simulation results disclose an insignificant amount of confinement loss (CL) of 8.01 × 10–5 cm−1 at 1.1 THz in the x-polarization mode. Besides, the effective material loss (EML) is only 2.2 × 10–3 cm−1 at the point. These values ensure a negligible amount of losses present at the modeled waveguide. The model offers a high numerical aperture. The power fraction for this model is 45% in the x-polarization mode at 1.1 THz. One of the splendid properties of the presented model is the ultra-flatten dispersion of approximately ± 0.004 ps/THz/cm, which ensures an insignificant amount of pulse broadening while applying this model in communication fields. The simple structure involving rectangles as well as desired values for optical parameters enhance the fruitfulness and fabrication feasibility of the presented THz waveguide. Innovative Refractive Index Sensor Utilizing Terahertz Spectrum for Early Cancer Detection: a Photonic Crystal Fiber Approach

Abstract:In this article, we have presented a new cancer sensor with a square core Photonic Crystal Fiber (PCF) to detect the cancerous tissues of the cervix, breast, and skin. This process is thus streamlined and separated by PCF due to its excellent detection characteristics. All required configurations using the finite element method are developed, and various performances of the model are studied using MATLAB. The results depict a mathematical analysis regarding the effectiveness of the sensor within the frequency range of 1.0–2.8 THz. Its relative sensitivity becomes around 99.85% at 2.2 THz with 8.49 × 10 −14 dB/m for CL. This PCF has a spot size 3.06 × 10 −4 μm that further contributes an effective area of 9.078 × 10 −8 m 2 . Moreover, it has a very small EML of 0.00182 cm −1 . This device uses the unique photonic properties of cancer cells to provide quick, reliable, and really very accurate methods for cancer cell identification, such as in breast, cervical, and skin cancers. Due to small size and flexibility, only minimally invasive operations are possible. Real-time monitoring can also be provided, hence improving immediate evaluation and therapy efficacy. This article introduces a novel integration of PCF technology with THz radiation to create a highly sensitive sensor for early cancer detection. By utilizing THz waves' non-invasive and high-resolution properties, this sensor overcomes the sensitivity limitations of traditional methods. It also addresses scattering issues from conventional air hole shapes through optimized geometric configurations, setting a new standard in biomedical sensing and potentially revolutionizing early cancer diagnostics.

Abstract:Although analyte sensing using photonic crystal fibers (PCF) is nothing new, the difficulty to achieve higher sensitivity with low loss and ease of fabrication still exists. With the increase in sensitivity, fabrication difficulty also increases most of the time, which is undesirable. A topas based novel sectored circular PCF is proposed in this research work for liquid analyte sensing in THz frequency range countering all these difficulties. Cladding holes in proposed geometry contain air and core holes contain analytes of various refractive indices. Comsol Multiphysics V5.3a software is utilized for numerical simulation by implementing the finite element method (FEM). Obtained results demonstrate that at an operating frequency of 1.5 THz, the average sensitivity is 92.14% and the confinement loss is 2.308 × 10 −9 cm −1 . Moreover, the proposed PCF also display a moderate effective area and a lower material absorption loss at optimal design condition. Due to the simplicity of design and comparable performances, designed sensor is highly applicable as a biochemical sensor in various industrial applications.
A doped-polymer based porous silicon photonic crystal sensor for the detection of gamma-ray radiation

Abstract:In this research, a theoretical investigation of the one-dimensional defective photonic crystals is considered for the detection of gamma-ray radiation. Each unit cell of the considered one-dimensional photonic crystals (1D PhCs) is composed of two layers designed from porous silicon infiltrated by poly-vinyl alcohol polymer doped with crystal violet (CV) and carbol fuchsine (CF) dyes (doped-polymer) with different porosity. In addition, a single layer of doped-polymer is included in the middle of the designed 1D PhCs to stimulate the localization of a distinct resonant wavelength through the photonic band gap. In particular, the appearance of this resonant mode represents the backbone of our study towards the detection of γ-ray radiation with doses from 0 to 70 Gy. The Bruggeman's effective medium equation, the fitted experimental data to the refractive index of the doped-polymer, and the Transfers Matrix Method (TMM) serve as the mainstay of our theoretical treatment. The numerical findings provide significant contributions to some of the governing parameters such as the thicknesses of the considered materials on the performance of the presented sensor, the effect of incidence angle and the porosity of the considered materials on the resonance wavelength. In this regard, at optimum values of these parameters the sensitivity, quality factor, signal-to-noise ratio, detection limit, sensor resolution, and figure of merit that are obtained are 205.7906 nm RIU −1 , 9380.483, 49.315, 2.05 × 10 −5 RIU, 3.27 × 10 −5 , and 2429.31 RIU −1 , respectively. Therefore, we believe that the suggested design could be of significant interest in many industrial, medical, and scientific applications.

Abstract:The increasing development of radiotherapy technology and treatment modalities has put forward new and higher requirements for dose monitoring. In this article, the Ce/Tb co-doped silica fiber was employed to implement the dose detection on a Varian EDGE linear accelerator. The stability of the system was assessed by measuring ten repeated irradiations with 6-MV X-ray beams, and the maximum percentage deviation of these exposures was 0.38%. Dose linearity was studied by measuring the accumulated optical intensity signal versus incident irradiation dose, and the experimental results indicated that the signal increases with the increasing delivered dose and exhibits apparent linear dependence on the dose ( = 0.99998). The dose rate independence was also verified by the test of fixed doses with increased dose rates. Moreover, the sensor gantry rotated from 180° to 180°E, and the detected values for all the angles are almost identical with a maximum difference of 1.26%. Excellent radiation resistance has also been observed by repeated measurement with the sensor pre-irradiated at different doses. All the tests indicate that the novel sensor can meet the basic requirements for clinical dose detection. Furthermore, it provides a new way to solve some challenges in clinic dosimetry, such as the validation of small-field dosimetry and surface dose assessment.

Abstract:Objective To study the elementary properties of thermo luminescent dosimeter(TLD) and the elementary function of read system for its clinical use.To provide experimental basis for developing its clinical use of in vivo measurements within dose of clinical radiotherapy.Methods Using TLD(51 tablets) and ionization chamber(NE-Farmer 2581-A TYPE) as well as build-up cap(to consist of LTS-TYPE plastics) under clinical conditions of external irradiation with the AECL-780C 60Co,the characteristics of thermo luminescent dosimeter were investigated in phantom and were verified with ionization chamber in the same phantom.Results The surface of TLD was clean and smooth.Its diameter,thickness and weight per square centimeter were 3.00 mm,0.80 mm and(29.4 ±0.9)mg/cm2,respectively.Within 1 000 cGy,the relationship between thermo luminescence values and doses of irradiation was linear,and the correlativity was close(r=0.99),with a sensitivity of 1.00±0.09.The deviation of 0.66% was derived from cGy rating of repeated irradiation.Conclusion The properties for TLD can be achieved by a good choice,and present excellent reproducibility and stability,negligible dependence on temperature,linear response versus dose from some cGy to some Gy,independence of dose-rate and high spatial resolution.It entirely accord with the norm of ICRU.As shown in this part,TLD is the well-established method used for in vivo dosimetry.
