Abstract:The pollutant from land surface applied to agricultural chemicals is one of the major sources of contamination in water bodies. The pollutant transport within a watershed is profoundly influenced by the rainfall-runoff processes, especially the associated upland erosion and sediment transport processes because most of pollutant can be dissolved into water or attached to the soil particles. A set of soil experiments in laboratory was conducted in this paper to investigate the impacts of upland erosion and sediment transport on pollutant loads. The soil utilized for the experiments was the silty sand collected from Loess Plateau, China; and ammonium bicarbonate was applied on the soil surface as the pollutant source. Runoff discharge, soil loss, and ammonia- and nitrate-nitrogen concentrations were measured to establish the relationships which can help the numerical model to predict the pollutant losses coupled with upland soil erosion during the rain-fall-runoff processes. The experimental results indicate the ammonia-nitrogen concentration in runoff reaches the peak at the initial stage of the overland flow generation, and quickly decreases and approaches to the steady state. The ammonia-nitrogen transported by the soil loss also makes contributions to the nitrogen loss; and its amount mainly depends on the soil transport rate. The ammonia-nitrogen dissolved in overland flow is dominant due to the strong aqueous solution of ammonium bicarbonate during the first storm right after its application.

Abstract:Pollutant from surface applied agricultural chemicals and pesticides is one of the major sources of contamination in water bodies. Soil Quality Improvement with Increasing Reclamation Years in the Yellow River Delta

Abstract:The saline soils in the Yellow River Delta are primarily affected by seawater intrusion resulting from the intersection of land and sea, which exhibit variations in salinity. The quality of these soils is also influenced by anthropogenic reclamation, including fertilization and irrigation. This study quantitatively evaluated the distinct soil properties and soil quality characteristics of the Yellow River Delta during different reclamation years (i.e., 0a, 1a, 5a, 10a, and 20a) using principal component analysis (PCA) and the Soil Quality Index (SQI). The findings indicated that the soil salt content (SSC) significantly decreased (p < 0.05) from 6.60 g/kg in the initial reclamation year (0a) to 1.63 g/kg in the 10th year (10a) and then slightly increased to 2.85 g/kg in the 20th year (20a). Consequently, the soil salinity level shifted from saline soil to slight salinity and then increased to medium salinity. Ammonium nitrogen (NH4+-N) notably increased by 8.31 mg/kg during the first five years of reclamation (0a to 5a) and gradually decreased by 2.56 mg/kg in the 20th year (20a). On the other hand, nitrate nitrogen (NO3−-N) experienced a significant decrease of 2–5 times after reclamation but continued to increase by 8.96 mg/kg with subsequent reclamation years. The available nitrogen (AN), available phosphorus (AP), and soil organic carbon (SOC) exhibited a significant increase of 24.87 mg/kg, 10.11 mg/kg, and 6.76 g/kg, respectively, with increasing reclamation years. However, available potassium (AK) gradually decreased after reclamation and then increased in the 20th year (20a). The values of SQI for different reclamation years were 0.307 for 0a, 0.339 for 1a, 0.320 for 5a, 0.318 for 10a, and 0.327 for 20a, indicating an increasing trend with increasing reclamation years. It was discovered that long-term reclamation significantly reduced soil salinity and improved soil quality, leading to the sustainable development of reclaimed saline soils in the Yellow River Delta.
Soil Salinity Weakening and Soil Quality Enhancement after Long-Term Reclamation of Different Croplands in the Yellow River Delta

Abstract:Saline soils are of great concern globally. Selecting the Yellow River Delta as a model site, the influence of reclamation on soil salinity and saline soil quality was investigated. Soil quality index (SQI) was applied to statistically analyze 210 soil profile samples collected at seven depth layers in 30 sampling sites among native saline soils and three croplands (peanut, cotton, and wheat) in May 2020. After reclamation, the soil salt content (SSC) reduced from 4.52 g/kg to 1.44 g/kg after reclamation, with the degree of soil salinity reducing from severe to slight. The nitrate nitrogen (NO3−-N) contents of peanut, cotton, and wheat croplands were 1.90, 2.02, and 4.29 times higher and the available phosphorus (AP) contents were 5.43, 3.57, and 8.77 mg/kg higher than that of the saline soils, respectively, while the soil ammonium nitrogen (NH4+-N) and available potassium (AK) contents were decreased. The NO3−-N, AN, and AP contents of the three croplands showed a significant surface aggregation at depth of 0–30 cm. SQI increased by 0.10, 0.09, and 0.02 after the reclamation with the enhancement effect of wheat and cotton was more pronounced. It was discovered that reclamation notably improved the soil quality as a result of crop growth and field management of fertilization and irrigation.

Abstract:Excessive fertilization in rice paddy fields leads to surface water eutrophication, groundwater contamination and air pollution. Determining optimum nitrogen (N) management is essential for maintaining rice yield while reducing the environmental risk caused by N loss. A two-year field experiment (2017-2018) was carried out in a typical paddy field in the middle reaches of the Yangtze River. The WHCNS (soil Water Heat Carbon Nitrogen Simulator) model was calibrated and evaluated for simulations of measured ponding water depth, evapotranspiration, aboveground dry matter, yield, runoff and crop N. The model was then used to evaluate the effects of different N fertilizer rates and split-N application ratios (SNR) practices on crop growth and N losses. Results showed that the model performed well in simulating rice growth and N losses in the region. Ammonia volatilization and denitrification were the mainly pathways of N loss in paddy field, and their two-year average losses were 34% and 38% of the total N loss, respectively. N leaching accounted for 23%, and runoff N loss accounted for 5% of total N loss. N losses were evaluated for two different scenarios and simulated ratios of ammonia volatilization, denitrification, N leaching, and runoff to total N loss under different N management scenarios were 15%-53%, 33%-55%, 6%-30%, and 4%-8%, respectively. Ammonia volatilization and N runoff exponentially increased with an increase of N fertilizer rate, whereas denitrification and N leaching showed an increasing and then a decreasing trend. Yield increased by 36 kg ha(-1), and the total N loss decreased by 32.6 kg N ha(-1) when the N fertilizer rate was reduced from 231 kg N ha(-1) to 155 kg N ha(-1) and the SNR was changed from 5:3:1 to 1:1:4. Therefore, reducing the N fertilizer rate and increasing the SNR in the late rice growing season can significantly reduce N loss and effectively improve N use efficiency.

Abstract:Protecting water resources from nitrogen (N) contamination is an important public‐health concern and a major national environmental issue in China. Loss of N in soils due to leaching is not only one of the most important problems in agriculture farming, but is also the main factor causing N pollution in aquatic environments. The study area selected is in a typical agricultural extensively cropped land, Fuxianhu Lake catchment in Yunnan Province, China. Three sets of soil columns laboratory experiments were conducted to investigate the migration dynamics and leaching loss of N under different artificial rainfall intensities. One groundwater observation well in agricultural extensively cropped land was built to investigate the groundwater pollution caused by agriculture N loss. Based on the laboratory experiment and field monitoring results, the migration dynamics of ammonia‐nitrogen (NH4‐N) and nitrate‐nitrogen (NO3‐N) were analysed in detail. The LEACHMN model was used to test against the laboratory and field data to evaluate the drainage water and N leaching loss from the soil. The results indicate that the LEACHMN model is useful to carry out a numerical simulation of the water and N transport both in a laboratory experiment and in field monitoring. The findings of this paper help to demonstrate the distribution and migration of N in agricultural lands, as well as to explore the mechanism of groundwater contamination resulting from agricultural activities. The work presented in this paper is also believed to be useful in formulating management strategies for an extensively cropped catchment to reduce diffusive pollution from agricultural activities.

Coping with groundwater pollution in high-nitrate leaching areas: The efficacy of denitrification

Abstract:The Ningxia Yellow River irrigation area, characterized by an arid climate and high leaching of NO3--N, exhibits complex and unique groundwater nitrate (NO3--N) pollution, with denitrification serving as the principal mechanism for NO3--N removal. The characteristics of N leaching from paddy fields and NO3--N removal by groundwater denitrification were investigated through a two-year field observation. The leaching losses of total nitrogen (TN) and NO3--N accounted for 10.81-27.34% and 7.59-12.74%, respectively, of the N input. The linear relationship between NO3--N leaching and N input indicated that the fertilizer-induced emission factor (EF) of NO3--N leaching in direct dry seeding and seedling-raising and transplanting paddy fields was 8.2% (2021, R2 = 0.992) and 6.7% (2022, R2 = 0.994), respectively. The study highlighted that the quadratic relationship between the NO3--N leaching loss and N input (R2 = 0.999) significantly outperformed the linear relationship. Groundwater denitrification capacity was characterized by monitoring the concentrations of dinitrogen (N2) and nitrous oxide (N2O). The results revealed substantial seasonal fluctuations in excess N2 and N2O concentrations in groundwater, particularly following fertilization and irrigation events. The removal efficiency of NO3--N via groundwater denitrification ranged from 42.70% to 74.38%, varying with depth. Groundwater denitrification capacity appeared to be linked to dissolved organic carbon (DOC) concentration, redox conditions, fertilization, irrigation, and soil texture. The anthropogenic-alluvial soil with limited water retention accelerated the leaching of NO3--N into groundwater during irrigation. This process enhances the groundwater recharge capacity and alters the redox conditions of groundwater, consequently impacting groundwater denitrification activity. The DOC concentration emerged as the primary constraint on the groundwater denitrification capacity in this region. Hence, increasing carbon source concentration and enhancing soil water retention capacity are vital for improving the groundwater denitrification capacity and NO3--N removal efficiency. This study provides practical insights for managing groundwater NO3--N pollution in agricultural areas, optimizing fertilization strategies and improving groundwater quality.
Impacts of surface runoff and sediment on nitrogen and phosphorus loss in red soil region of southern China

Abstract:Surface runoff plays an important role in the process of nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) loss. It has two common evaluation indicators, runoff and sediment, which are greatly affected by the contributing factors. To study the impacts of surface runoff and sediment on N and P loss, 36 simulated rainfalls were applied on fields with different conditions (three rainfall intensities, three coverage ratios, and two slopes) at laboratory scale with two replicates. It was found that: (1) loss modulus of both the total nitrogen and total phosphorus decreased with runoff occurrence time; (2) runoff modulus had a closer relationship with undissolved N and P than dissolved N and P; (3) N loss was more affected by runoff than P loss; (4) both N and P loss modulus followed the consistent changes with the sediment content. At last, suggestions were provided to reduce the harm of N and P loss in red soil region of southern China in different areas with different conditions.
Ammonia volatilization as the major nitrogen loss pathway in dryland agro-ecosystems

Abstract:The losses of excessive reactive nitrogen (N) from agricultural production pose detrimental impacts on water, air and land. However, N budgets of agroecosystems are still poorly quantified, presenting a barrier to understand the N turnover in agriculture. Agricultural ammonia (NH3) volatilization has been recognized as a crucial contribution to the pollution of fine particulate matters over China through reacting with acid gases. Building on these challenges, the first national-scale model analysis was constructed on the N budgets to gain an overall insight into the current status of N flows in Chinese dryland systems towards sustainable N management. Total inputs of soil N in Chinese dryland soils were estimated at 121 kg N ha−1 in 2010, considering all pathways including N manure, fertilizer, atmospheric deposition and litter from crop residues. Atmospheric N deposition accounted for 25% of N fertilizer plus N manure in Chinese dryland soils, suggesting that N deposition could not be ignored when estimating total N inputs to Chinese dryland soils. The highest ratio of NH3 volatilization to total N outputs was found at 43 kg N ha−1 (∼21%) in Northern China, followed by 41 kg N ha−1 (∼20%) in Sichuan Basin and 25 kg N ha−1 (∼26%) in Northeastern China. The modeling results indicated that, if a 20% decrease in N fertilizer plus N manure was achieved, it would lead to a 24% (7–49%) reduction in NH3 volatilization. Substantial reductions of NH3 volatilization would also be achieved by making an improvement in changing management practices (controlled release fertilizer and full irrigation). The results would give an overall insight into N budgets in Chinese dryland soils. The constructed N budgets assisted with understanding agricultural N flows and NH3 pollution, and evaluated the impacts of human activities on N cycle towards a precise way to regulate agricultural management.

Effect of Wheat-Maize Straw Return on the Fate of Nitrate in Groundwater in the Huaihe River Basin, China

Abstract:Straw return is becoming a routine practice in disposing of crop residues worldwide. However, the potential effect of such operation on the chemistry of local groundwater is not well documented. Here, shallow groundwater in an area where wheat-maize straw return is practiced was analyzed, and the seasonal changes in the nitrate concentration and the isotope compositions of NO3- and H2O were determined along two flow paths. Measured δD and δ18O in waters indicated that the groundwater was mainly recharged by atmospheric precipitation, while measured δ15N and δ18O in nitrate suggested that the sources for groundwater NO3- included urea fertilizer, soil nitrogen, and sewage/manure. Reduced NO3- concentrations coincided with an enrichment of organic matter in the groundwater of the straw return area, revealing an environmental condition that facilitates nitrate reduction, whereas increased δ15N-NO3- and δ18O-NO3- along the flow path suggested the occurrence of denitrification. Further analyses showed that, compared to the cases in the absence of straw return, as much as 80% and 90% of groundwater nitrate was removed in low and high water seasons in the straw return area, pointing to a potential positive effect of straw return to groundwater quality.
Vegetation restoration and agricultural management to mitigate nitrogen pollution in the surface waters of the Dan River, China

Abstract:Non-point source pollution in rivers is an important factor affecting water quality. Quantifying the load of non-point source pollutants in the water and implementing improvement measures are critical for guaranteeing drinking water quality. In this study, the Dan River watershed, which is an important water source for Beijing, was investigated. Through a combination of water sampling and numerical simulations, the temporal and spatial distributions of nitrate nitrogen (NO3−-N) and ammoniacal nitrogen (NH4+-N) loads in the watershed were determined, and the effects of vegetation restoration and agricultural management on reducing nitrogen pollution in the river were predicted. The NO3−-N and NH4+-N loads in the watershed were higher during the wet season (July–September), accounting for more than 50% of the annual nitrogen output. The Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) was used to simulate the nitrogen load in the watershed. Pollution from nitrogen loading was serious in the lower reaches of the river; however, vegetation restoration can reduce the nitrogen output. Through scenario simulations, we found that an increase in forestland in the watershed would reduce the NO3−-N and NH4+-N loads. The nitrate and NH4+-N loads in the watershed also decreased with reduced fertilizer use and reduced irrigation application in the watershed. Thus, reasonable land planning and agricultural management measures can effectively reduce nitrogen loss, which is an effective way to control non-point source pollution in watersheds and ensure river water quality.

Influence of Hydrogeological and Geochemical Parameters on N2O in the Groundwater in the Irrigation Area of Lower Reaches of Yellow River

Abstract:The plains of the lower reaches of rivers are important areas for food production. In the groundwater of irrigated agricultural areas of these regions, the N2O concentration was generally observed to be higher than that of the water-gas equilibrium. Due to the complexity and uncertainty of the aquifers, the mechanisms by which groundwater N2O are affected by groundwater hydrogeology and geochemistry remain unexplored. In this study, 41 groundwater samples were collected from three zones of the irrigation area of the lower reaches of Yellow River (i.e., piedmont plain, coastal plain, and central plain), and the hydrogeological parameters of these three areas were characterized. The results showed significant differences of the N2O concentration in the groundwater of the three zones of the lower reaches of Yellow River plain, which was 14.1 +/- 13.1 mu g/L, 1.84 +/- 1.48 mu g/L, and 36.5 +/- 40.5 mu g/L for the piedmont plain, central plain, and coastal plain, respectively. The differences were attributed to different groundwater N input and hydrogeological parameters in the three zones. The infiltration coefficient of precipitation was found to be the most important hydrogeological parameter affecting groundwater N2O. This study also evaluated the indirect N2O emission factor in the irrigation area of the lower reaches of Yellow River. The N2O emissions induced by groundwater exploitation in the irrigation area of the lower reaches of Yellow River were found to be 1.87 g hm-2 year-1. These findings provide a foundation to develop strategies to reduce N2O production and emissions in the agricultural area of the lower reaches of rivers.

Abstract:With the increasing transformation of saline-alkali land into paddy, the nitrogen (N) loss in saline-alkali paddy fields becomes an urgent agricultural-environmental problem. However, N migration and transformation following the application of different N fertilizers in saline-alkali paddy fields remains unclear. In this study, four types of N fertilizers were tested to explore the N migration and transformation among water-soil-gas-plant media in saline-alkali paddy ecosystems. Based on the structural equation models, N fertilizer types can change the effects of electrical conductivity (EC), pH, and ammonia-N (NH 4 + -N) of surface water and/or soil on ammonia (NH 3 ) volatilization and nitrous oxide (N 2 O) emission. Compared with urea (U), the application of urea with urease-nitrification inhibitors (UI) can reduce the potential risk of NH 4 + -N and nitrate–N (NO 3 − -N) loss via runoff, and significantly ( p < 0.05) reduce the N 2 O emission. However, the expected effectiveness of UI on NH 3 volatilization control and total N (TN) uptake capacity of rice was not achieved. For organic–inorganic compound fertilizer (OCF) and carbon-based slow-release fertilizer (CSF), the average TN concentrations in surface water at panicle initiation fertilizer (PIF) stage were reduced by 45.97% and 38.63%, respectively, and the TN contents in aboveground crops were increased by 15.62% and 23.91%. The cumulative N 2 O emissions by the end of the entire rice-growing season were also decreased by 103.62% and 36.69%, respectively. Overall, both OCF and CSF are beneficial for controlling N 2 O emission and the potential risks of N loss via runoff caused by surface water discharge, and improving the TN uptake capacity of rice in saline-alkali paddy fields.

Abstract:Protecting water resources from nitrate-nitrogen (NO 3 -N) contamination is an important public health concern and a major national environmental issue in China. Loss of NO 3 -N in soils due to leaching is not only one of the most important problems in agriculture farming, but is also the main factor causing nitrogen pollution in aquatic environments. Three typical intensive agriculture farmlands in Jiangyin City in China are selected as a case study for NO 3 -N leaching and modeling in the soil profile. In this study, the transport and fate of NO 3 -N within the soil profile and nitrate leaching to drains were analyzed by comparing field data with the simulation results of the LEACHM model. Comparisons between measured and simulated data indicated that the NO 3 -N concentrations in the soil and nitrate leaching to drains are controlled by the fertilizer practice, the initial conditions and the rainfall depth and distribution. Moreover, the study reveals that the LEACHM model gives a fair description of the NO 3 -N dynamics in the soil and subsurface drainage at the field scale. It can also be concluded that the model after calibration is a useful tool to optimize as a function of the combination “climate-crop-soil-bottom boundary condition” the nitrogen application strategy resulting for the environment in an acceptable level of nitrate leaching. The findings in this paper help to demonstrate the distribution and migration of nitrogen in intensive agriculture farmlands, as well as to explore the mechanism of groundwater contamination resulting from agricultural activities.

Abstract:Previous findings have shown that the human somatosensory cortical systems that are activated by passive nonpainful electrical stimulation include the contralateral primary somatosensory area (SI), bilateral secondary somatosensory area (SII), and bilateral insula. The present study tested the hypothesis that these areas have different sensitivities to stimulation frequency in the condition of passive stimulation. Functional MRI (fMRI) was recorded in 24 normal volunteers during nonpainful electrical median nerve stimulations at 0.5, 1, 2, and 4 Hz repetition rates in separate recording blocks in pseudorandom order. Results of the blood oxygen level‐dependent (BOLD) effect showed that the contralateral SI, the bilateral SII, and the bilateral insula were active during these stimulations. As a major finding, only the contralateral SI increased its activation with the increase of the stimulus frequency at the mentioned range. The fact that nonpainful median‐nerve electrical stimuli at 4 Hz induces a larger BOLD response is of interest both for basic research and clinical applications in subjects unable to perform cognitive tasks in the fMRI scanner. High-resolution Measurement of Ammonia Emissions from Fertilization of Vegetable and Rice Crops in the Pearl River Delta Region, China

Abstract:Loss of ammonia (NH3) as a result of intensive N fertilization, especially due to agronomic practices in South China, is not well characterized. To investigate mechanisms and characteristics of NH3 volatilization after urea application, an on-line monitoring system, with 30-min data resolution, was used to study vegetable and rice fields from January 2009 to September 2010. Ammonia emissions and concurrent meteorological conditions were monitored for up to 20 days after fertilization in 12 experiments. Standard recovery test results indicated that the on-line measurement system was both stable and accurate. The NH3 emission factors (EFs) related to broadcast (soil surface) basal dressing and top dressing to Brassica rapa L were 23.6% and 21.3%, respectively. The NH3 EFs from holing basal dressing and broadcasting top dressing for lettuce were 17.6% and 24.0%, respectively. The NH3 EFs for early rice in parallel broadcast basal dressing process were 10.7% and 14.2%, while in parallel top dressing process were 24.0% and 22.6%, respectively. The NH3 EFs for late rice were 15.4% and 21.0% in parallel broadcasting basal dressing process, while 13.2% and 17.6% in parallel top dressing process. Emission of NH3 from vegetable and rice fields occurred mainly in the first 2-3 weeks after fertilization. Ammonia emission flux was positively correlated with air temperature and soil temperature in the majority of the experiments. Relationships between NH3 emissions and humidity, soil moisture or wind speed were explored, which were not consistent among all tests. Ammonia emission in vegetable and rice fields was primarily associated with temperature. High-resolution data, such as those gathered in the current investigation, will contribute to a more thorough quantitative understanding of the relationship between fertilizer application, environmental conditions, and NH3 volatilization which, in turn, will improve the accuracy of atmospheric modeling on local, regional and global scales. Subsurface Fluxes Dominate the Dissolved Nitrogen Losses from Rice Paddies in Central China

Abstract:Nitrogen losses in rice paddy fields pose a high risk to surrounding aquatic environment. While the surface N losses have garnered considerable attention in recent years, subsurface flux, including vertical leaching and nearditch lateral seepage, has barely been quantified. To understand how it impacts the N run off, we collected threeyear high-frequency and systematic field observations and adopted a two-dimensional quantitative model coupling water, nitrogen dynamics and crop growth. We quantified the magnitude and dynamics of subsurface N loss during rice growing season. Our results showed that subsurface N loss, reaching 6.2 kg N ha-1 and 4% of total applied N in rice growing seasons, was 2-fold larger than surface N runoff, in which lateral seepage contributed 33%. The driving factors include hydraulic gradients brought by ponded water depth and ditch water level. Based on our study, optimized irrigation management and conservation tillage were priority in mitigating subsurface N loss, with 41% and 32% reduction potential, respectively, and improved ditch-pond system combined with irrigation-drainage management could also be an effective solution. Together, these findings highlight an important role of subsurface flux including lateral seepage, which could be instrumental for future waterquality improvements in rice paddy-ditch landscape.

Abstract:The nitrogen losses in the intensive agricultural areas around the Dianchi Lake are an important factor for non-point source pollution and eutrophication of the lake. Based on the production, fertilization methods, and the physico-chemical properties of the soils, in-situ simulation experiments were carried out to investigate the mechanisms of transport and transformation of the nitrogen, and quantitatively determine the amounts of nitrogen losses in the water-soil-biological system.Results indicate that nitrogen losses in the intensive agricultural area are mainly gaseous losses (e.g. NH_3, N_2O,NO/NO_2 and N_2), plant uptake, denitrification, and seepage. Gaseous losses are mainly influenced by temperature, soil property, fertilizer type, the method and amount of fertilization, as well as the groundwater conditions. The results of the in-situ experiment and theoretical evaluation show that the utilization rates of nitrogen in areas I and II achieved 30.8% and 20.8% by adequate fertilization, respectively, which are remarkably higher than the rates by CK, 11.5% and 8.5%, respectively. It is concluded that the adequacy of the fertilization plays an important role in the control of the nitrogen losses in the intensive agricultural areas of the Dianchi Lake.

Abstract:Evaluation of the nitrate transport process in the deep vadose zone (DVZ) is important for groundwater quality management, especially in intensive agricultural regions, such as the North China Plain (NCP). The NCP produces ~20% of the total food grain in China, owing to timely groundwater irrigation and excessive chemical N fertilizer applications, and faces severe groundwater environmental degradation. This study evaluated the potential impacts of intensive agriculture on groundwater quality by investigating nitrate accumulation and transport in the DVZ of wheat-maize double-cropping field based on sediment sampling (maximum depth of 45.2 m) over three sub-regions of the NCP. The results showed that legacy nitrate‑nitrogen (NO3--N) accumulated in the DVZ ranged from 118.5 to 6302.8 kg N ha-1 across the NCP; it increased with depth at an average rate of ~157 kg ha-1 m-1. Nitrate transport and accumulation in the DVZ were spatially varied and mainly controlled by the DVZ sediment textures, in addition to water and nitrogen inputs from the ground surface. Coarse sediments retained lower soil water content, resulting in less nitrogen storage; however, they provided greater nitrate transport velocity. Higher transport velocities observed in the alluvial-proluvial fan allowed chemical N fertilizer to reach the water table. However, in other regions, nitrate transport velocities were lower than the water table decline rates, implying that groundwater quality may not have been impaired by chemical N fertilizer. Furthermore, a reductive environment was identified in some areas with fine sediments, indicating a favorable environment for denitrification in the DVZ. The findings of the current study could provide an important foundation for groundwater quality management in agricultural areas, such as the NCP and similar regions.
